and associations for recuperation and courage for future work4 ,many of them need also contact with ,northern society to refresh their hearts and minds1 and to gain a stimulus not imparted by the circle of acquaintances found on the ,southern field4 ,these visits ,north afford opportunities for our workers to make known the wants of the people with whom they labor1 and to show the deep interest they take in their welfare1 and the sacrifices they are willing to make in their behalf4 ,the return of a missionary to the church from which he or she went forth1 often gives a spiritual uplift to the whole congregation4 ,we are happy to recognize the willingness manifested by pastors1 by ,sabbath-schools and by local missionary societies1 to afford these returned missionaries the privilege of explaining the needs of their work and of enlisting a deeper sympathy for it4 ,we wish1 however1 to make it known that these missionaries greatly appreciate kindly attention4 ,many of from the hot-bed of ,new ,englandism1 and was absolutely unknown among the people to whom the ,northern evangelism then had access1 and even on their part1 as a system1 it had yet to encounter the densest opposition which ignorance1 superstition and sectarianism could combine4 ,and when1 like ,john the ,baptist1 it laid the ax at the root of the tree1 demanding morality as well as pietism1 it confronted the momentum of generations of pagan vice confirmed by the indurations of the system of slavery4 ,in order to get any foothold on this basis1 it has to begin with the spelling-book1 as the key to the incarcerated ,bible4 ,but the hunger for letters1 for ideas1 forced a way into the word of ,god4 ,schools followed the army across the ,southland4 ,revivals1 like the ,northern clover1 sprang up in the same track4 ,every teacher1 by his or her vow1 entered into with the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 became a missionary4 ,talk about women's work for women4 ,here1 for a score of years1 have been from #aej to #bjj gifted consecrated women1 of whom the world was not worthy1 sacrificing youth and beauty1 going for a time into places where men could not stand1 with their names cast out as vile1 yet lifting up their lowly sisters and starting scores and scores of young men on into a religious life and into the ministry of the ,lord ,jesus4 ,as converts multiplied1 many of them took to the old churches1 and not a few desired to have the way which their dear teachers represented4 ,and so1 gradually there came on these churches1 each one a miniature republic1 and each1 in almost every case1 an outcome of the school process4 ,in that early time1 not a few of the best tried friends of the ,association grew uneasy at the slow progress of the church work1 only in late years to admire the wisdom of the administration in not picking the pear before it was ripe4 ,the ,m4 ,e4 church going ,south had only to open its doors to receive #bjj1jjj of the old-time ,methodists1 with their clinging immoralities and their corrupting ministers4 ,grandly has that patriotic church wrestled with its problem4 ,but ours has been a call to a different task4 ,in five years after the close of the war1 besides the three ,john ,g4 ,fee churches in ,kentucky1 which had flung themselves upon the serried ranks of the slaveholders1 compelling a vast region to behold what sort of stuff this ,puritanism was made of1 the ,association numbered eleven churches among the sable brethren1 whose teachers and preachers usually joined with them in fellowship4 ,in ten years these had come to number forty4 ,and now1 eighteen years after the war1 the total is eighty-nine1 an average of five for each year4 ,nor are these merely nominal or skeleton churches4 ,their average membership is sixty-five1 while that of all our churches west of the ,mississippi is thirty-five4 ,nearly every one has its own place of worship and its own pastor4 ,their own ministers have had to be grown1 converted and trained up from the alphabet1 while multitudes have been prepared in our schools for service in the old-time churches1 the small number that we have taken 7a half hundred1 besides several foreign missionaries7 serving only as the toll for grinding the grists4 ,a high wisdom was that which was displayed by the early workers in seizing upon the strategic points1 so that one can now hardly go to a principal city of the ,south without finding there a fully-working ,congregational church1 such as those at ,washington1 ,hampton1 ,charleston1 ,raleigh1 ,savannah1 ,macon1 ,atlanta1 ,mobile1 ,montgomery1 ,birmingham1 ,meridian1 ,jackson1 ,new ,orleans1 ,austin1 ,little ,rock1 ,memphis1 ,nashville1 ,chattanooga1 ,knoxville1 and ,louisville4 ,so it seems that this work has gone on in every ,state of the ,south1 for in ,florida1 which might seem an exception1 the noted church at ,jacksonville was organized by one of the actuaries of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and nourished by another4 ,nor have these churches been left to the weakness of an isolated independence4 ,for the better training of them1 and for the consolidating of their strength1 they have been organized into regular ,state associations1 which have sought to introduce the methods of the ,north1 which in their varied services often come to an intellectual and spiritual glow that astonishes us1 and which come to a consciousness of their national fellowship when they each elect their delegates to the annual meeting of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and to the ,national ,council1 one of their own members having served at the last triennial as an assistant moderator4 ,these ,state bodies now number eight1 which nearly cover the whole ,south4 ,so1 then1 the physical geography of the land is quite well mapped out1 ,congregationally4 ,there remains much space for filling4 ,no view of the ,congregationalism taken into the ,south by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 will be complete without considering the pervasive influence of all of these churches and institutions of learning1 that have come to be a power universally recognized4 ,almost every member going forth from them is1 in some sense1 a representative of the ,congregational idea1 though he does not himself take the name4 ,in all the ,south1 among the whites as well as the blacks1 these principles have been made known1 so that the way1 in great part1 is prepared for carrying on there a spiritual propagandism that shall yet recognize the essential feature of this past dispensation1 which1 at the ,north1 has been up-borne by sympathy and prayer1 the methods in the lower grades attract the attention and win the admiration of only an appreciative few4 ,the specimens of map drawing and of original designs in industrial drawing were considered good by competent judges4 ,for several years a large part of the public have had object lessons from nature and in form of a daily exercise1 with especial reference to teaching them to make simple and exact statements in clear and correct language2 and in their examinations they were said to show marked ability in making nice distinctions and using good ,english4 ,the experiment of the senior normal girls in cottage housekeeping under the direction of one of the teachers meets with universal favor4 ,everybody in these ,united ,states thinks every girl ought to know how to keep house well1 and the best way to learn how to do a thing is to do it4 ,the outcome of the work in this department is highly satisfactory1 and we wish we had a larger cottage for next year4 ,the silk culture has ,i went to my post with fear and trembling4 ,i had had no experience1 no business experience1 or any but in the ministry2 but ,i was sure of one thing1 that good1 honest1 persistent effort would bring good results4 ,i had heard about many of the iniquities and shortcomings of agents4 ,my friends warned me against the position4 ,i knew that the name of ,indian agent had become almost a synonym of rascal or cheat4 ,i felt1 however1 that it was a position a man could fill with honesty and integrity and good results4 ,so ,i went to work4 ,i was horrified at the state of things ,i found4 ,for many years an agency had been established2 thousands of dollars had been expended2 a great many men had been employed4 ,but ,i saw that the ,indians were discouraged1 doing nothing1 sulky and averse to effort4 ,i arrived at the agency early in ,april1 and found that the fields had been left for a year untilled and in a filthy condition4 ,i had had early experience as a farmer4 ,i called the ,indians together1 and told them they must clean their fields4 ,they said they had no teams or ploughs4 ,i asked if they couldn't at least clean them up8 ,they said yes4 ,i told them to begin and ,i'd see what ,i could do for them1 but there was no time to lose4 ,they said they would start to-morrow4 ,the next morning ,i was waked by loud talking4 ,i looked out and saw at least fifty women with hoes1 axes and shovels on their shoulders--not a man among them4 ,i took an interpreter and went out to them4 ,they said they had come to clean the fields4 ,i said that was good1 but ,i hadn't sent for them1 but for the men4 ,they laughed at that idea--it was a novelty4 ,i told them the men must come1 gave them some good advice on household work for women--on which ,i am well posted--and sent them home4 ,they went their way1 and that was the end of the work4 ,i couldn't get an ,indian man out that time4 ,i was puzzled what to do next4 ,i went out to the fields with the interpreter1 and we did find one old man who had gone to work4 ,i told him to go on1 and ,i'd plow what he would clean up1 which ,i did4 ,this encouraged one and another by degrees1 with the gift of extra rations1 and so at last we got the fields cleaned and planted4 ,the first year1 though1 was very trying1 owing to my ignorance of the ,indian character4 ,i spoke to them as ,i would to any one else about truth and duty1 etc41 but met constant1 persistent opposition4 ,i was wearied to death with their councils4 ,fifty to a hundred great stalwart ,indians would walk into my office1 sit down on the floor1 and begin to smoke4 ,then ,i would wait with patience till one of them would rise and make their wants known1 and ,i would answer them4 ,but everything ,i proposed they would oppose1 for some reason ,i did not ,illsley says3 8,as each one who writes will naturally tell of her own work1 it becomes my pleasure to speak especially of our life at the ,bird's ,nest4 ,miss ,brown and ,i think we have seventeen as interesting little girls to look after as can be4 ,our oldest is twelve1 and our youngest five years of age4 ,all are doing well in school4 ,our little girls love to learn their ,bible verses1 and
