average attendance of pupils for the year just past1 has been #eaj1 of which #aaj have been ,indians4 ,the work done compares favorably with that of former years4 ,the annual reports of the ,principal1 teachers and heads of industrial departments1 published in the ,june number of the ,southern ,workman1 and still more fully in pamphlet form1 with the treasurer's report1 give many interesting details of ,hampton's work and prospects4 ,,fisk ,,university1 ,,nashville4 ,,miss ,,anna ,m4 ,,cahill4 ,on ,sunday1 ,may #bj1 the baccalaureate sermon was preached in the chapel of ,livingstone ,missionary ,hall4 ,this and all the other exercises of ,commencement had the added interest of being the first held in our new building--a building in whose beauty and usefulness for school purposes we have rejoiced all the year4 ,ten young people--three graduating from the higher normal course and seven from the college course--listened to the earnest words of ,president ,cravath1 spoken especially to them1 from ,john #ad3bc1 on the power and need of an inner life of communion with ,god4 ,the annual missionary meeting which is always held by the missionary society on the evening of ,commencement ,sunday1 was duly observed4 ,tidings had reached us of the illness of ,secretary ,woodworth1 who was to have given the missionary address1 and1 failing to supply his place1 we were thrown back upon our own existing missionary zeal1 which1 we were glad to find1 burned brightly enough upon the home hearth to make a solemn1 impressive hour of this last ,sunday service4 ,our ,commencement week happened to coincide with 8military week0 in ,nashville1 for which great preparation had been made1 and the city was gaily decorated with the national colors1 and crowded with people4 ,we had feared the effect of the excitement on the school1 but found no cause for anxiety4 ,our pupils were too much absorbed in their work to be drawn away by the attractions of the parade ground1 and our audiences seemed not to be much increased or diminished by the event4 ,the class admitted to college on ,monday evening numbers eight1 three of whom are children of professors in the university4 ,among the essays and orations of the evening1 were pleas to imaginary millionaires in the audience for a gymnasium1 a conservatory of music and other improvements4 ,thus the incoming classes are seeing needs and making demands which the university has no means of meeting4 ,on ,tuesday there drove up to the door of ,livingstone ,hall a furniture wagon1 from which was unloaded a suspicious-looking rectangular box addressed to ,prof4 ,a4 ,k4 ,spence4 ,strange that through the law of association so much of harmony can be suggested by so simple a geometrical form4 ,curious eyes watched the opening1 and saw with delight on lifting the top a handsome ,steinway square grand piano4 ,it was carried into the chapel and placed upon the platform4 ,rumor said it was a gift1 but nothing further could be learned until ,commencement day4 ,in the midst of the exercises of the higher normal graduation on ,wednesday evening1 ,secretary ,woodworth entered and took a retired seat on the platform4 ,his health was so far restored as to enable him to travel1 though not in time to reach us before ,sunday4 ,the alumni address1 which formed part of the programme of the evening1 was given by ,prof4 ,mc,pherron4 ,after this ,secretary ,woodworth was called out from his retirement and spoke for a few minutes4 ,the list of alumni was read1 the present work of each stated and the announcement made that steps had already been taken by the alumni to raise gradually a sufficient sum to endow a professorship in the university4 ,the last great day1 ,thursday1 was as perfect as clear skies and fresh1 dustless air could make it4 ,a large audience of both white and colored people assembled early4 ,the young men marched to ,jubilee ,hall1 and a procession was there formed to return to the chapel4 ,the ,british flag was draped over the platform on this birthday of ,england's queen1 and the room was bright with terraces of flowering plants4 ,the seven young people who appeared as candidates for a degree represent many years of work on the part of student and teacher2 the average length of time spent in the institution by members of the class is seven years4 ,the one young lady took for her theme1 the great field of work opening before and among the girls of the ,south and the necessary training for that work4 ,spoken from her standpoint her words were full of solemn meaning4 ,after the graduates had finished their part1 we listened eagerly to the address of ,dr4 ,washington ,gladden on the causes of poverty1 ignorance and vice--the threefold evil against which we are fighting4 ,when the final piece of music had been sung1 ,prof4 ,spence asked permission to say a few words1 and after some rapid wheeling of pianos to certain places on the platform1 announced that ,mrs4 ,general ,fisk had presented the new piano for the chapel of ,livingstone ,hall4 ,its companion was given by the same lady some years ago for the parlors of ,jubilee ,hall4 ,mention was made of the many other gifts of ,mrs4 ,fisk1 and a vote of gratitude for her kindness was heartily given by the entire audience4 ,to afford an opportunity to hear both pianos together1 ,mendelssohn's wedding march was played as a quartet4 ,a prominent ,southern gentleman of ,nashville1 himself a former slaveholder1 was present for the first time with other invited guests at the alumni dinner1 and spoke warmly1 cordially and strongly for our work4 ,the most encouraging comment that ,i have heard on the exercises of the week was made by a former student1 who was present3 8,it seems to me that every ,commencement is better than the last40 ,so may it continue to be while ,fisk ,university stands4 ,,talladega ,,college4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,c4 ,l4 ,,woodworth1 ,d4,d4 ,talladega1 in ,eastern ,central ,alabama1 is a bright village of a thousand people1 lying high up among the hills1 away from the malaria which lurks in the valleys below4 ,the air is soft and bracing1 the water pure and sweet1 and the whole region eminently beautiful4 ,here ,talladega ,college was founded in #ahfg4 ,the college is beautiful for situation1 and in this respect would contest the palm with any institution we have1 except possibly1 ,fisk at ,nashville4 ,encircled on all sides by green mountain ranges1 lying far up among the hills1 it is one of the most inviting and salubrious spots in the ,state1 and must have been foreordained as the site of a college4 ,the institution is well equipped for work4 ,stone ,hall1 ,swayne ,hall1 ,graves ,hall1 and ,foster ,hall are solid and comely1 and have accommodated more than #bih students the present year4 ,and of the campus1 on which ,swayne ,hall sits1 shaded with superb water oaks1 it must be said we know of nothing finer in the ,south4 ,connected with the college is a farm of some #bjj acres1 mostly cultivated by the young men4 ,here they learn the art1 as well as the science of farming1 and here the supplies for the students' table are principally raised4 ,it may be doubted whether any school of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is occupying a more needy field1 or has around it a larger constituency4 ,alabama has a colored population of some #fcj1jjj1 for whom ,talladega ,college is the only institution in the ,state offering to them the advantages of the higher education4 ,for the supply of trained teachers1 of educated ministers1 and of intelligent and reliable leaders--for this immense multitude ,talladega must be the main reliance4 ,the college1 therefore1 has a mission at its own doors1 and for the present has more than it can do to meet the home demand4 ,its students are scattered throughout the ,state1 as teachers and preachers1 and their influence is felt in every public interest4 ,the ,faculty of the college is able1 clear-headed and intensely in earnest4 ,president ,de ,forest is an enthusiast in his work4 ,scholarly1 inspiring1 magnetic and full of faith in the capacity of the negro for the finest culture1 and to reach the highest manhood1 he does not mind the isolation of his position1 nor the ostracism attending it1 but finds perpetual joy in seeing the good work prosper in his hands4 ,it was my good fortune to be present during parts of three days in ,commencement week1 though not permitted to witness the exercises on ,commencement day4 ,of the general air of the school there can be only words of praise4 ,the quiet of the students on the campus1 on the streets1 in the class rooms1 the self-respect in their bearing everywhere manifest1 was a token both of the discipline of the school and of the spirit of the scholars4 ,we heard creditable examinations in grammar1 in ,virgil1 in the evidences of ,christianity and in the life of ,christ4 ,but the exercise which interested us most was the reading of six or seven essays by members of the theological class4 ,these papers1 we were assured1 had received scarcely any alteration in passing through the hands of the professor4 ,they were clear1 sharp1 radical in thinking and independent in style and expression4 ,two college presidents were brought to the bar of criticism1 and it really looked as if the students had the best of the argument4 ,yet there was no appearance of arrogance or of self-conceit2 only the air of honest1 thoughtful men4 ,the class of students as a whole seemed made up of earnest1 aspiring youth1 eager for an education and willing to make every possible sacrifice in order to secure it4 ,as an instance1 ,i saw a man in the grammar school1 somewhere from thirty-five to forty years of age1 who will work in the foundry six months or a year1 and then will take his earnings and go to school as long as they will last4 ,this he has been repeating for years4 ,another was pointed out to me who had worked on the farm a whole year1 and then was using up his credits in schooling and board4 ,i should not give a complete idea of the college unless ,i spoke particularly of its religious tone4 ,this is of the highest1 and was especially satisfactory4 ,president ,de ,forest is a man of profound religious convictions1 and has not the slightest faith in education which does not include the moral as well as the intellectual character4 ,hence the ,bible is put underneath all the courses of instruction1 and religion made the practical and ever-present duty of the daily life4 ,talladega1 like so many other institutions1 needs endowments for its various chairs of instruction4 ,for lack of these it is sadly limited in the good it might accomplish1 and its ,faculty are badly handicapped and bearing burdens which are making them old before their time4 ,let me whisper into the ear of men who are asking what they shall do with the wealth committed to their care3 ,here is an object worthy of their largest charity1 and1 at the same time1 an object most needy and most appealing4 ,let them give to this thousands and tens of thousands1 and they will make no mistake4 ,,straight ,,university1 ,,new ,,orleans4 ,,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,,alexander1 ,d4,d4 ,it would1 we believe1 be the judgment of the ,faculty and the public1 that the past year has been one of exceptional prosperity4 ,our catalogue shows a roll of #chj names with an average attendance larger than any previous year4 ,the examinations in the ,law ,department came first in order4 ,the ordeal was severe1 certainly a fair test of legal reading1 and fidelity to lectures4 ,ten young men1 eight white and two colored1 met this ordeal with great credit to themselves and their instructors1 and received their degree of ,bachelor of ,law4 ,they have since been admitted by the ,supreme ,court to practice in all the courts of the ,state4 ,it should be mentioned as a sign of growth in public sentiment1 that one of the ,professors in the ,law ,department1 a native ,charlestonian1 has lately published a ,book on ,admiralty ,law1 and on the title page appended to his name the following3 8,professor of ,commercial ,law1 ,equity1 and ,admiralty in ,straight ,university40 ,the ,sumner ,literary ,society was addressed by ,gen4 ,r4 ,b4 ,elliot1 formerly in ,congress from ,south ,carolina4 ,he is one of the most eloquent representatives of the colored race4 ,his treatment of the theme 8,the ,advance of ,civilization in the ,united ,states10 was able1 eloquent1 and scholarly4 ,it was a rare pleasure to listen to him4 ,he was a friend of ,charles ,sumner1 and the dead statesman had no more eloquent eulogist than he4 ,our ,alumni ,association was addressed by ,rev4 ,a4 ,e4 ,p4 ,albert1 of the class of '#ha4 ,his oration was a careful defense of the negro against the rude and savage assaults recently made upon him4 ,a poem was delivered by ,mr4 ,colwell1 of ,baton ,rouge1 of the class of '#gi4 ,it possessed real poetic merit1 and was gracefully delivered4 ,he was cheered to the echo4 ,it was interesting to observe the hearty enthusiasm of the audience over 8the coming poet40 ,the ,annual ,exhibition at the ,university ,chapel1 under the direction of our most faithful and efficient ,dean1 was a great success4 ,the ,chapel was crowded to excess1 and a happier audience is seldom gathered4 ,our ,commencement on ,tuesday evening in ,central ,church was an indication both of the excellence and efficiency of the instruction afforded by the ,university1 and the strong hold which the school has gained in the public regard and appreciation4 ,the large auditorium was crowded4 ,a fair estimate of the audience would place it at #hjj1 and they remained with delighted attention from #h o'clock to #aa o'clock4 ,four young men and one young woman graduated from the ,classical ,department1 and two young men from the ,higher ,english ,department4 ,their orations were well and carefully written1 showing mature thought and manly convictions4 ,it was certainly suggestive of the possibilities of the race to see the manly bearing of these young people1 and to hear them treat with real ability and eloquence such themes as 8,the first ,century of the ,republic10 8,the ,survival of the ,fittest10 8,pride of ,race0 and 8,head ,workers and ,hand ,workers40 ,to those who have a chronic habit of detracting from the abilities of the negro we say1 8beat them if you can40 ,it was a delightful feature of ,commencement that the son of our beloved dean took his diploma in the ,higher ,english ,department1 and delivered an oration on 8,the ,future ,fields of ,conquest in ,science10 which did credit to his heart and his head4 ,we departed from our usual custom in conferring upon two of our graduates the degree of ,bachelor of ,science4 ,it was the judgment of the ,faculty and our ,board of ,trustees that this should be done4 ,the young men have devoted several years to classical and scientific study in the ,university2 their scholarship has averaged #i on a scale of #aj1 and they have pursued such special studies as the ,faculty have assigned them4 ,at the close of the regular examination a special examination was appointed for them before a committee of the ,board of ,trustees1 in whose presence they also read a scientific thesis1 the one on 8,applied ,electricity0 and the other on 8,the ,copernican ,system40 ,thus closes another school year1 and we are able to say as never before3 8,hope is in the ascendant0 for our beloved ,university4 ,service this year has been a joy1 and ,almighty ,god has crowned that service with his blessing4 ,to ,him be all the glory4 ,,tougaloo ,,university4 ,the assembling of the ,sunday-school and the study of the lesson entitled ,paul and ,barnabas in ,cyprus1 with 8,separate me ,barnabas and ,saul for the work whereunto ,i have called them10 as its key-note1 seemed a most fitting introduction to the ,commencement exercises upon the close of which a large number of the students were to go forth to their summer's work4 ,following the ,sunday-school exercises1 and in keeping with the custom of previous anniversaries of this institution1 a ,sabbath-school convention was held1 in which was discussed a variety of topics calculated to stimulate and aid the students in their ,sunday-school work4 ,these exercises were enjoyed by a large number of people1 many of whom were from a distance4 ,at #g3cj ,p4,m4 the chapel was again filled4 ,the well-drilled choir sang 8,i will lift up mine eyes unto the hills0 in a way to inspire all present4 ,the sermon to the graduating class was upon the words1 8,return to thine own house and show how great things ,god hath done unto thee40 ,monday1 ,tuesday and ,wednesday were occupied with the oral examinations of the different departments4 ,these examinations were well sustained by the students1 who gave good evidence that their instructors had been faithful and thorough in their work4 ,the attendance of visitors upon the examinations was good1 but as the last day drew near1 large numbers arrived by every train4 ,many came by their own conveyances4 ,one persistent young man1 a former student1 eager to attend the ,commencement1 came a distance of thirty miles on foot4 ,on ,wednesday evening the audience room was filled with an expectant throng4 ,the exhibition which called it together was greatly enjoyed1 and reflected much credit upon those charged with the laborious task of planning and training and bringing it to pass4 ,when ,thursday morning dawned1 many more were added to the number of visitors already present4 ,the audience assembled promptly at #aa o'clock4 ,members of the ,state ,board of ,visitors1 with other distinguished guests1 were upon the platform4 ,the music by the choir elicited much praise4 ,three young men and two young women having completed the ,elementary ,normal ,course were graduated1 receiving certificates of fitness to teach the common ,english branches4 ,five others were appointed to supplement the programme of literary exercises4 ,the essays and orations presented covered the following range of topics3 8,the ,teachers20 8,genius and ,success20 8,whitewash20 8,why a ,young ,man ,should ,seek a ,thorough ,education20 8,the ,material ,advancement of the ,south20 8,the ,cause of ,temperance20 8,as ,you ,would ,have ,it20 8,the ,study of ,physical ,science20 8,the ,american ,missionary ,association20 8,home40 ,the ,principal of the ,normal ,department then presented certificates to the graduating class1 setting forth in a few well chosen and emphatic words the nature of these certificates1 of the step the graduates had taken1 and that there was more beyond4 ,col4 ,j4 ,l4 ,power1 editor of the ,clarion1 a man of wide influence in the ,state and a staunch friend of the school1 spoke on behalf of the ,state ,board of ,visitors1 of which he is the ,secretary4 ,he paid a glowing tribute to the work of the school and of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,in referring to the essay on 8,whitewash10 he said there was no whitewashing done at ,tougaloo--that it was the genuine stuff4 ,referring to the oration on the ,american ,missionary ,association1 he said he had known considerable about the ,association and its work1 but that he was amazed at the magnitude of its work4 ,in closing his speech1 which also was without 8whitewash10 he said it would be the pleasure of the ,board of ,visitors at the meeting of the next ,legislature to ask for at least as large an appropriation as the institution had received for the last two years4 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,c4 ,b4 ,galloway1 ,editor of the ,southern ,christian ,advocate1 was then introduced4 ,he commended the work of the institution and expressed his satisfaction with the original1 direct1 practical1 common-sense way in which the essays and orations had been written and presented4 ,he was impressed with the absence of grandiloquent gush1 so characteristic of the youthful mind on ,commencement platforms4 ,after the ,commencement dinner the graduating class held their 8,ivy ,exercise10 which consisted of a class song1 class poem1 planting the ivy and an address by a member of the ,faculty4 ,in the evening ,r4 ,w4 ,jackson1 class of '#hj1 delivered the address before the ,alumni1 on 8,decision40 ,it was well written and full of interest4 ,at its close ,mr4 ,g4 ,w4 ,jackson of ,whiteside1 ,tenn41 a former student1 and ,miss ,rosa ,mc,cutcheon of ,chattanooga1 ,tenn41 class of '#hb1 stepped upon the ,commencement platform and were united in ,christian marriage1 constituting by this sacred tie a ,christian family4 ,thus closed a most successful year of faithful work4 ,,theological ,,department1 ,,howard ,,university4 ,,rev4 ,j4 ,g4 ,,craighead1 ,d4,d4 ,the anniversary exercises were held in the ,fourth ,presbyterian ,church1 ,washington ,city1 ,may #d1 when six young men who had completed the regular three years' course of study received the usual certificate of the department4 ,five delivered addresses before a large audience1 and were subsequently complimented by many of the most judicious friends of the race who were present1 for the discriminating and just treatment of their subjects1 and for their evident improvement of the advantages of instruction which they had enjoyed4 ,one of the graduates sails in ,june for ,africa1 as a missionary of the ,presbyterian ,board2 another is waiting an opportunity to labor on the same continent2 the remaining four go to the wide and needy field in the ,south--each in a different ,state1 so great is the demand for capable laborers4 ,the past year has been one of marked favor and prosperity to the department4 ,thirty-four students have been under instruction1 and there has been no interruption in study1 by reason of sickness1 either on the part of professors or students4 ,the location of the institution on the high ground north of the city1 overlooking both it and the ,potomac ,river1 is most conducive to health1 while it secures the quiet essential to educational work4 ,with a complete and regularly systematized course of studies extending over three years2 with six ,professors 7thanks to the wise liberality of the ,american ,missionary ,association7 imparting instruction in all the branches of study pursued in like theological seminaries in this country1 pious young men can here be prepared to become effective workmen for ,christ1 either at home or abroad4 ,as these advantages become better known to those wishing to study for the ministry1 we may expect that an increased number will seek to profit by them4 ,and this is desirable for many reasons4 ,with our present facilities we could equally well instruct twice or thrice the present number did the men present themselves having the proper preliminary education for the study of theology4 ,our greatest need is scholarships1 both to secure this elementary training and to assist students while in the theological department4 ,without some aid1 but few can obtain a proper education for usefulness in the university4 ,not much is required1 as compared with what white students require and receive1 but this little is necessary to stimulate personal effort1 and to help them over insurmountable obstacles on the road to useful knowledge4 ,is there a cheaper or better way for patriots or ,christians to solve this social1 political1 moral and religious problem8 ,,wilmington1 ,n4,c4 ,,by ,,mr4 ,w4 ,h4 ,,thrall4 ,perhaps the tendency of this people is to give much prominence to showy performances4 ,we have aimed this year in ,wilmington to check this1 and not to allow preparations for the 8exhibition0 to interrupt regular recitation-room work4 ,the scholars were early given to understand that the last monthly examinations would be more than usually difficult2 that they would be oral as well as written1 and that very much would depend upon the results4 ,the last four days of the school year were given up to the examinations4 ,if the readers of ,,the ,,american ,,missionary could have hurried through the deep sands of ,wilmington's streets1 to our school building on one of those days1 they would have seen four rooms crowded with anxious workers1 telling with tongue or pen1 what they had been learning during the months past4 ,some of the pupils1 after writing steadily for two or three hours at a time begged the privilege of continuing their work at the noon recess and after school hours4 ,the papers spoke for the thoroughness of the work that they had done4 ,upon the walls were hung map drawings1 specimens of penmanship and of freehand drawing1 that would compare well with exhibits which ,i have seen in rooms of the same grades in the best schools in the ,north4 ,in the ,first ,primary ,room were two things of especial interest3 a table covered with needle-work made by the smallest girls of the school1 and two sets of papers placed side by side1 showing the penmanship1 spelling1 figures1 etc41 of the same pupil in ,october1 #ahhb1 and in ,may1 #ahhc4 ,the work of the pupils of that room at the number-table1 and their writing and reading1 encourage us that there is reason for hope in the coming generation of colored people4 ,the closing exercises of the school were held ,tuesday evening1 ,may #bith4 ,the hall1 the aisles1 entries1 doors and windows were crowded4 ,the men even climbed the verandas to reach us4 ,the pupils had flooded us with the choicest flowers1 grasses and foliage1 and the hall was beautifully decorated4 ,the part the pupils had in adorning it spoke well for their taste4 ,at the appointed time the audience of between four and five hundred was called to order1 and the programme commenced4 ,for two hours and a half the throng sat or stood1 listening to recitations1 declamations1 dialogues1 essays1 one oration1 songs1 etc4 ,i wish the people of the ,north who question the promise of this race could have been present4 ,there was hardly one hesitation in the recitations2 the essays and oration showed thought and good ,english2 and little boys and girls gave concert recitations in perfect unison4 ,important features of the programme were1 a tableau called 8,the tempted boy and the guardian angel10 designed to give an object lesson on temperance1 and an illustrated poem by pupils of the ,grammar and ,normal ,room4 ,both of these exercises proved the pupils' readiness to understand and their quickness to execute4 ,the teacher in charge had but little time to teach them1 yet everything was done with ease and rapidity4 ,the evening's entertainment was a fresh exhibit to us all of the talent and the tact that lie dormant in this race1 which is to be the ruling race in twelve ,states at no distant day2 and we bade 8good-bye0 to our pupils with new courage to go on with a work which must be slow1 but is essential to the very life of our country4 ,,emerson ,,institute1 ,,mobile1 ,,ala4 ,,by ,,miss ,,helen ,d4 ,,barton4 ,anniversary exercises at ,emerson ,institute1 ,may #beth4 ,the much-talked-of and long-looked-for last day of school had come4 ,though it was the last day many of the last things had already been done4 ,the last hour of hard study was over1 the last recitation heard1 the last examination paper marked4 ,the two days preceding had been devoted to what were1 by courtesy1 called oral examinations4 ,in reality1 however1 much of the time1 in the lower rooms at least1 was devoted to the entertainment of the visitors4 ,the favorite songs were sung and the best recitations made4 ,if ,george ,washington's mother or sister came in1 ,george's classes were called1 his slate work was examined and compared with others1 and he was invited to recite his 8speech40 ,a variation from the programme was made again and again that as far as possible the visitors might judge of the work of the children in whom they are more especially interested4 ,this could be done as the certificates for promotion were given on the standing of the pupils in the written examinations held the second week in ,may4 ,friday morning the children came together as a school for the last time4 ,after devotional exercises the departments were dismissed to their own rooms1 where the teacher read the per cents4 of the examinations and presented each pupil with a certificate grading him for the coming year4 ,many faces brightened with pleasure4 ,some few showed dissatisfaction2 having fallen slightly below the desired average they find the obnoxious word conditionally written on the card4 ,others still feel bitter disappointment2 having failed1 they must remain in the same grade4 ,some of these deserve our sympathy1 the failure being caused by poverty or sickness2 others are only reaping the reward of carelessness and indolence4 ,when the distribution of certificates was completed1 ,miss ,caughey1 the principal1 went in turn to each department1 and after adding her word of encouragement to the disappointed ones and approbation to the successful ones1 invited the promoted class to the entertainment4 ,one of our white friends found it difficult to believe that this ancient singer of nursery rhymes was not a middle aged woman instead of the young girl she really is4 ,the continuous from the beginning to the end of the exercises1 and the effort of ,prof4 ,steele to raise money for the ,institute from the citizens of ,memphis was endorsed by many present4 ,we give below ,indian priests1 and left1 so that for many years previous to the assignment of the ,agency to the ,american ,missionary ,association they had received little religious instruction4 ,intermarriage with some of the tribes where the ,catholics have had teachers has kept up remembrance of those early times4 ,one ,indian especially1 who has been among the very worst1 belongs to this class4 ,having failed to conquer the agent1 he gave up1 but when he returned seemed determined if he failed in one way to try another1 and so began to revive the old ,catholic religion1 and he has held such services frequently for a number of years4 ,about two years ago an ,indian before his death saw several strange visions1 which combined some truth with much of the old ,indian superstition4 ,this man leaned toward the ,catholics1 partly because ,i did not believe these revelations to be of as much value as the ,bible1 and partly because his relations favored the ,catholic religion4 ,a few of them set up regular services1 partly ,catholic and partly after their own revelations4 ,at funerals they sometimes wished me to officiate in company with them1 but in most cases they have given up and let me have the whole service4 ,last fall another ,indian who had moved away and taken a homestead about #bj miles from here apparently died1 but after six and a half hours revived and told of wonderful things which he had seen4 ,he has since been baptized by the ,catholics1 built a church and become a priest4 ,last summer ,i spoke of two promising young men whom ,i hoped would be of great ,christian service here4 ,the most promising after doing very well for a time1 brought great disgrace upon himself and was suspended from the church4 ,i have tried to show him his error1 but thus far it has not produced the result desired4 ,these ,indians have almost entirely lost faith in their old religion as such1 but naturally want one of some kind4 ,they are1 however1 unwilling to give up their horse-racing and some of them their gambling4 ,i have been asked by several to baptize them1 but refused because of these things4 ,the ,catholic religion allows all this1 and so they have turned to it4 ,the consolidation of the three ,puget ,sound agencies into one last fall has given us thus far less moral force here4 ,there have been occasional light spots4 ,a letter came from ,pearl ,street ,church1 in ,hartford1 where ,i taught a ,sabbath-school class fourteen years ago1 offering us a barrel4 ,it seemed very providential1 as if ,god were saying3 8,you work on1 and ,i will take care of the support40 ,the barrel came and everything appeared to be so good that the children squealed1 as they do not often1 while each article was taken out1 and their mother often said3 8,how very pleasant surprise upon reaching it4 ,it is not a boarding hall for students1 as many have thought4 ,such halls are in connection with boarding schools and accommodate both teachers and students4 ,the ,mission ,home1 of which we give a specimen in the accompanying cut1 is at stations where we have churches and day schools1 and is the home of the pastor and teachers4 ,in some of the larger cities1 as ,wilmington1 ,n4,c41 ,savannah1 ,ga41 ,mobile1 ,ala41 we have graded schools requiring a teaching force of from six to ten persons4 ,then there are the pastor and family and the lady missionary1 and the home accommodates all4 ,as each has a special line of duty occupying the full time1 a matron is appointed to take charge of household affairs and secure by her good management a pleasant and happy home for the family4 ,sometimes the wife of the pastor or principal acts as matron1 sometimes the duties of matron and missionary are combined4 ,it is no insignificant position to have charge of such a home1 and our matrons are as truly missionaries as any in our field2 besides the direct opportunities of usefulness among the people1 they may add to the efficiency of every member of the family by the cheerful1 genial1 restful spirit of the home1 which it is largely in their power to maintain4 ,this plan of ,mission ,homes has its advantages to the work4 ,it gives opportunity to teach by example varied lessons in home life1 of neatness1 economy and thrift4 ,the family altar is set up1 and often some members of school or church join in the morning or evening song of praise4 ,social parlor-gatherings are had1 when the people are cordially invited and are engaged in pleasant conversation and games1 which1 while interesting them1 tend to their improvement4 ,here are often held the mothers meetings and the sewing class1 and daily the people come singly or by twos or threes for special help and advice1 knowing that they are welcome1 and that they will find in some members of the family the wise counsellor and friend4 ,we can scarcely overestimate the educative influence of these ,mission ,homes upon the people4 ,even where there are but few workers employed1 we cannot wisely dispense with them4 ,within a year we have built a small house in a country district where two ladies are employed as missionary teachers4 ,it is plain1 two stories1 contains five rooms1 is simply furnished1 and cost about #ijj4 ,there the ladies keep house1 and they testify1 as also do other missionaries from the city station near1 that this little 8,home0 has already done more for the people ,much as ,i love the model school1 ,i can but see that the model home is its only sure foundation4 ,so the work is all one4 ,i only hope that the grandeur of 8,work for ,women in the ,home0 may be so felt that the noblest women will be drawn into the service1 and develop such plans and mature such methods that the multitude of busy mothers and children1 all over our land1 can cast in their pennies cost of supporting a lady missionary1 and how many months during the year is it expedient for her to labor in the ,south8 ,it takes #dej to provide for a lady missionary for one year1 including want of their early associations8 ,if not1 what is the cost for their care during this time8 ,there is nothing more important for the well-being of many colored girls than suitable watch and care during their summer vacations4 ,we have been unable to do much in this direction4 ,a few have been kept in the different boarding institutions1 where the buildings have been open4 ,these have been given work whenever opportunity offered4 ,thirty or thirty-five dollars would provide for a girl in addition to what she could earn4 ,we would be glad to correspond with any who are disposed to assist collect a little money for sending the ,gospel to the heathen4 ,among those who asked for a box was a poor child1 so poor that the chairman hesitated at first to give her a box2 on consideration1 however1 he let her have one4 ,about a fortnight afterward1 this little girl called upon him in great trouble4 ,he said to her1 8,why1 ,sarah1 what are you crying for8 ,cannot you get any money to put into your box80 8,no1 sir1 it is not that10 sobbed ,sarah1 8it is so full ,i don't know how ,i shall get any more in1 the last penny was so hard to get in ,i had to take a hammer to hammer it60 ,the gentleman said1 8,well1 ,sarah1 ,i think we can easily get over that difficulty--here is another box for you40 ,but this was not all2 when ,sarah first applied for a box1 she did so just because her feelings of compassion had been awakened for the poor heathen children2 but while she was busily engaged in collecting1 the thought came into her mind1 8,what am ,i collecting this money for8 ,that the poor heathen children may be taught about ,jesus1 but what do ,i know about ,him myself80 ,sarah then began to pray1 and begged ,god the ,holy ,spirit to teach her about ,jesus1 and that was the commencement of a new life to the dear child4 ,,what ,a ,,penny ,,can ,,do4 ,willie's penny made heaven rejoice4 ,it would not have bought more than a stick or two of candy or given much help to a starving family4 ,what did he do with it8 ,his sister was a missionary's wife in ,africa1 and the family were filling a box to send her4 ,as one after another brought their gifts ,willie said1 8,i want to give my penny40 8,what shall be bought with it80 was the next question4 ,it was decided to buy a tract and write its history on the margin1 and with a prayer for its success send it on its distant errand4 ,the box arrived on the mission ground1 and among its valuable contents ,willie's gift was laid away unnoticed and for a while forgotten4 ,but ,god's watchful1 all-seeing eye had not forgotten it4 ,one day a native teacher was starting from the mission station to go to a school over the mountain4 ,he knew the language well and was a great help to the missionaries1 but he was not a
