engraving--,styles in bookplates4 ,of course some people have exaggerated the importance of bookplates1 and on the other hand some have affected to ignore them4 ,now the simple fact is that bookplates belong to books1 and anything that has to do with books will assuredly charm cultivated minds until time shall be no more4 ,if this essential point were oftener remembered1 the exaggerations of both sides would be avoided4 ,in ,germany1 a country where bookplates very early found a home1 the word bibliothekzeichen1 or library label1 is used4 ,germans also use the name ex libris1 and in ,france the ,latin expression ex libris is the only term in use4 ,naturally the owner's name in the genitive case is always understood4 ,in ,france manuscript inscriptions of ownership are very fittingly included as ex libris4 ,it is too late to change now2 but1 at all events1 whether included or not under any special word1 manuscript inscriptions in books by their owners will always be a very interesting study4 ,what1 as explained above1 are in ,france included under ex libris1 were known long before the days of printing1 as personal inscriptions with or without the delineation of armorial bearings are often to be found forming part of the text of books in manuscript4 ,in fact the various relationships of wealthy patron1 learned scribe1 and skilled illuminator1 gave much scope for these4 ,to come to what may be said to be known everywhere as ex libris1 is to treat of those wonderful days when the earliest printed books were still a novelty4 ,directly several people or institutions each had copies of a certain printed book1 each copy being a duplicate of the other1 a wish arose to distinguish ownership4 ,before treating further of bookplates1 it will be well to clearly point out the different kinds of blocks or plates4 ,the woodcut block1 known in some manner to the ,chinese #djj years before1 was first cut in ,europe early in the fifteenth century4 ,the ,st4 ,christopher engraved in ,germany in #adbc1 is probably the earliest4 ,the piece of wood to be engraved was cut longwise with the grain1 as a plank is cut to-day4 ,a thin piece of some soft wood1 such as pear1 apple1 or lime1 was chosen1 the design drawn upon it1 and then with a knife the engraver cut away to a certain depth everything except the drawn design4 ,in modern times--about #aghe--;a revolution took place in wood engraving1 when ,bewick began to engrave on a piece of wood cut endwise1 and with a graver instead of a knife4 ,bewick chose some very hard wood1 usually box4 ,this manner has been continued to this day2 and sometimes to distinguish the old art from the new1 as the one is so different from the other1 the former is called a woodcut and the latter wood-engraving4 ,next as to etchings4 ,to produce an etching a copper plate is covered with wax1 then with an etching-needle the design is drawn through the wax to the copper4 ,acid is then applied1 which1 of course1 only eats out the copper where the design has been etched4 ,now as to copper-plate line engravings4 ,the engraver first traces on the plate the outline of his design1 and then with the triangular-pointed graver he furrows out the lines1 inclining his graver deeper or shallower according as he wishes to produce varying effects4 ,copper-plate engraving has been practised ever since early in the fifteenth century4 ,about #ahbj engraving on steel came into vogue4 ,more impressions can be taken from a steel than from a copper plate2 but steel is more difficult to engrave upon4 ,by a new process1 however1 a copper plate can now be strengthened with a steel film4 ,mezzotint engraving is an art by itself1 and of great interest to ,english readers1 because of the many charming mezzotint engravings after ,england's great portrait-painter1 ,sir ,joshua ,reynolds2 and also by reason of ,prince ,rupert1 the brave cavalier's1 close connection with the art4 ,he has often been said to have invented mezzotint2 but the first credit for this is now given to another gallant soldier1 ,ludwig von ,siegen1 who engraved a plate in #afdb1 and kept his discovery a profound secret until1 in #afed1 he found himself in ,brussels with ,prince ,rupert4 ,the two kindred spirits meeting1 the secret was soon unfolded4 ,rupert became as eager in another field as if he were leading a cavalry charge1 and in four years' time appeared his splendid mezzotint engraving1 ,the ,executioner of ,john the ,baptist4 ,as the object of this book is not to give a serious treatise on elaborate methods of engraving1 it will best express mezzotint to state that it is in general terms produced by the opposite process from a line engraving1 ,a very smooth copper-plate surface is1 as it were1 engraved all over4 ,then the design is wrought on this by a scraping process4 ,a kind of stipple or dotted engraving was known early in the sixteenth century2 but what is really famous as stipple and dotted engraving1 only came into vogue in the eighteenth century4 ,the copper plate was first covered with wax1 and a dotted outline of the subject pricked through the wax with an etching-needle4 ,then the shadows were filled in1 and finally acid used1 as with an etching1 ,francesco ,bartolozzi's is probably the name best known in this connection1 though in masterly ability1 ,william ,ryland1 who was hanged for forgery1 far surpassed him4 ,in aquatint engraving1 the plate to be engraved is covered with a solution made of resin and spirits of wine2 this process produces a surface more or less open to the action of acids when applied4 ,in the hands of a skilful manipulator1 a fine engraving results from this 8more or less0 condition4 ,here1 in beginning to record the succeeding styles of ex libris1 let us refer to the varieties which have prevailed at different times amongst ,deutschland bookplates4 ,in the first place careful note must be made regarding six coloured drawings of the fourteenth century which ,herr ,warnecke includes as bookplates1 in his splendid work--,die ,deutschen ,bcherzeichen4 ,now if once it be admitted that something inscribed in a book as in fact a necessary integral part of that book1 is a bookplate1 then it becomes impracticable to draw a distinguishing line4 ,next1 if like the old preachers1 we divided the description into three headings1 firstly1 secondly1 and thirdly1 we should on this subject record3 firstly1 ,german ex libris are armorial2 secondly1 they are armorial2 thirdly1 they are armorial4 ,especially in the earlier plates1 the crest is always in its proper place over a helmet1 and the helmet over the shield of arms4 ,it would be well if with just an artistic frame to enclose the whole the bookplate stopped there2 but alas1 there is only too often besides a multitude of fantastic accessories1 which give a confusing instead of a pleasing impression4 ,coming down towards the seventeenth century1 you are sometimes favoured 787 with a fantastic maze of the quarterings and emblems of the owner's relatives to the fortieth generation4 ,predominant in the seventeenth century is what is known as the ,baroque style1 with designs of endless curves and contortions1 drawn in a very heavy manner4 ,some of the plates which are most pleasing1 are those where the arms are surrounded by light wreaths of leaves and flowers4 ,reaching the eighteenth century1 the ,rococo or ,shell style1 begun in ,france1 becomes common in ,german bookplates4 ,late in the century there are1 too1 some curious and pleasing allegorical plates4 ,of early nineteenth-century ,german ex libris1 perhaps the less said the better2 but a few are good and all help in making history1 so that it is interesting to know that the famous author and collector1 ,karl ,emich ,count zu ,leiningen-,westerburg1 had between seven hundred and eight hundred specimens4 ,since then1 with the union of ,germany1 has come1 as all the world knows1 an artistic and literary development in ex libris1 as well as in other branches of art4 ,all this1 and a million other points about ,german bookplates1 are admirably told in the late ,karl ,emich ,count zu ,leiningen-,westerburg's book1 translated into ,english for the ex libris series4 ,in the styles of ,french bookplates1 the more or less simple armorial is most often met in the earlier examples1 although one of the best known--that of ,charles ,ailleboust1 ,bishop of ,autun1 had nothing armorial about it4 ,heraldry1 of course1 took an early and masterful hold of the ,french aristocracy1 although even in ,france1 in quite early years1 it was found necessary to fix fearful fines and penalties for people assuming insignia to which they had no lawful claim4 ,up to about #afej1 the almost rectangular shield prevailed in ,french bookplates2 but soon after this1 oval shields predominate1 and not seldom capped by coronets to which the owners had no title4 ,there is often at the base of the shield a solid plinth1 usually bearing the chief inscription4 ,then in the latter half of the eighteenth century comes the ,rococo or ,shell style of bookplate4 ,at the same time1 too1 there are of course ,field-,marshals' ex libris1 defended by guns1 and ,lord ,high ,admirals' bookplates reclining amongst anchors4 ,in #agij the ,french ,assembly passed a decree annulling the titles of duke1 count1 marquis1 viscount1 baron1 and chevalier2 also doing away with all armorial bearings4 ,in regard to the styles of ,english bookplates we cannot do better than1 for the most part1 to refer to the learning of ,mr4 ,w4 ,j4 ,hardy--a man steeped to the finger-tips in ancient lore4 ,up to about #agbj1 8,simple ,armorial0 is the best brief record4 ,the shield is surmounted by a helmet1 on which are the wreath and crest4 ,from the helmet is outspread mantling1 more or less voluminous4 ,in earlier examples this terminates generally in tassels1 before reaching the base of the shield4 ,in later examples its heavy folds descend quite to the base1 and often ascend from the helmet to the level of the top of the crest4 ,below is a scroll for the motto1 and below that1 the owner's name4 ,next we come to what is known as the ,jacobean style1 but to which the much more fitting name of 8,queen ,anne and early ,georgian0 should be given4 ,the style includes mainly an ornamental frame1 suggestive of carved work1 resting as often as not upon some kind of conventional support2 the ornamentation of both frame and support being of the interior architectural order1 making frequent use of fish scales and trellis or diaper patterns for the decoration of plain surface4 ,next we find the ,rococo style introduced from across the ,channel1 and this before long time1 merging into the well-known ,chippendale style1 so closely associated with ,english bookplates4 ,after this1 in ,english bookplates comes the festoon1 or wreath-and-ribbon style1 in which certainly many charming ex libris were engraved4 ,as ,mr4 ,egerton ,castle points out1 one of the surest ways of knowing this later ,georgian style is by the spade shape of the shields1 and altogether a manner which calls up memories of designers and architects such as ,sir ,w4 ,chambers1 ,adams1 ,wedgwood1 or ,sheraton4 ,,chapter ,,ii ,,bookplates ,,chronologically ,very early plates--,albert ,drer--,other ,german artists--,early ,english4 ,the bookplate here given as a frontispiece1 may be the oldest in the world4 ,at all events1 it remains to this day a fifteenth-century bookplate in a fifteenth-century book4 ,the work is a ,latin treatise on logic1 in a ,german hand4 ,mr4 ,w4 ,h4 ,j4 ,weale has very kindly looked at the book1 and writes3 8,the binding is ,german1 ,i think ,bavarian2 but although the same stamps1 or rather1 to be accurate1 some of them1 occur on several bookbindings ,i have copied1 ,i have never been able to locate them4 ,the ,s4 ,benedict with the book1 and glass with the serpent issuing from it1 is evidently ,german2 the arms have nothing to do with the ,saint1 or the order1 nor are they the arms of an abbey1 but no doubt those of a layman to whom the book belonged40,a ,now to come to the real or almost personal story of engraved bookplates or ex libris1 as we may call them indifferently4 ,first we will talk of the oldest1 and then gradually come down to our own time4 ,germany was the fatherland of bookplates1 and it is of great interest to remember that it was1 too1 the fatherland of printing and of wood-engraving4 ,the earliest known engraved bookplate is that of ,hildebrand ,brandenburg1 a monk of the ,carthusian ,monastery at ,buxheim1 near ,memmingen1 to which he was evidently in the habit of presenting books4 ,the woodcut shows an angel holding a shield on which are displayed the arms of the ,brandenburg family1 a black ox with a ring passed through its nose4 ,the late ,karl ,emich ,count zu ,leiningen-,westerburg1 the great authority on ,german ex libris1 suggests that either ,biberach or ,ulm was the birthplace of this bookplate1 and in or about the year #adgj1 which is a year before ,albert ,drer was born4 ,another bookplate1 also armorial1 of about the same date1 and found in a book given to this same monastery at ,buxheim1 is that of ,wilhelm von ,zell4 ,lastly1 there has as yet been found one other which is grouped with these two1 as of about the same date4 ,it represents a hedgehog with a flower in its mouth1 on grass strewn with flowers4 ,it was engraved for ,hans ,igler4 ,igel means a hedgehog1 and at the head of the ex libris is cut the inscription3 8,hanns ,igler das dich ein ,igel ,ks40 ,after this there may be mentioned the following six plates before we turn over the leaf of a new century4 ,the inscribed armorial ex libris of ,thomas ,wolphius1 ,pontificii ,juris ,doctor1 and that of ,rupprecht ,muntzinger1 a block of ,south ,german origin1 and ascribed by some to the hand of ,m4 ,wohlgemuth4 ,two anonymous plates1 both armorial1 and in saying anonymous it must not be supposed that the owner was not well known in his day1 and probably long afterwards4 ,one represents the head of a bull caboshed1 with a sickle issuing from it4 ,the other1 the fleur-de-lis1 is on a shield1 and for crest1 the half figure of a man with a battle-axe4 ,then two bookplates1 the body of which has been engraved and space left for one or another person to use them4 ,passing now into the sixteenth century1 and still keeping to chronology as our main guide1 we can turn at once to ,albrecht ,drer as a designer of ex libris1 and we now move on to safer ground1 as we begin to find dates1 and then soon names or monograms of engravers4 ,albrecht ,drer1 the second son of ,albrecht ,drer1 goldsmith1 was born in the good city of ,nuremberg on the #bast ,may1 #adga4 ,like ,benvenuto ,cellini1 born some thirty years later1 young ,albrecht ,drer's first experience of handiwork was in the goldsmith's craft2 but with a difference1 as ,benvenuto ,cellini learned the goldsmith's art against his father's will4 ,on ,st4 ,andrew's ,day1 #adhf1 young ,albrecht had the joy of inducing his father to apprentice him for three years to ,michel ,wohlgemut4 ,this step1 important in the young artist's life1 is especially important in our consideration1 as1 with the aid of ,anton ,koburger1 the princely printer1 who was ,albrecht ,drer's godfather1 ,michel ,wohlgemut founded the great ,nuremberg school of wood-engraving4 ,from #adij to #adid ,drer was on his travels1 and spent some while in ,venice1 where he was again in #aeje to #aejg4 ,on the #adth ,july1 #adid1 after his home-coming from his first wanderings1 he was married to ,agnes1 the daughter of ,hans ,frey4 ,for the rest1 this is not the place for a history of his works4 ,his noble life was closed on the #fth of ,april1 #aebh1 and thus before he had reached the age at which many artists have done their best work2 but what vast treasures he had wrought within those fifty-seven years6 ,the following five ex libris have been1 on good authority1 distinctly ascribed to ,albrecht ,drer's art3 two varieties of a woodcut made for ,willibald ,pirckheimer1 of ,nuremberg1 one with and one without the well-known motto 8,sibi et ,amicis40 ,this is a fine armorial plate with helmet1 and arms of himself and his wife4 ,one of three ex libris used by ,johann ,stab1 a learned mathematician and poet1 a friend of ,albrecht ,drer4 ,this is an armorial plate1 and is distinguished by having a laurel wreath2 but no inscription4 ,in the ,albertina ,museum at ,vienna is ,drer's original drawing in violet ink for the armorial woodcut bookplate of his friend ,lazarus ,spengler1 ,recorder of ,nuremberg4 ,the armorial woodcut ex libris of ,johann ,tscherte1 exhibiting a satyr and dogs4 ,tschert1 in ,bohemian1 means a satyr or devil4 ,besides the foregoing1 there exist several sketches by ,drer which can hardly have been intended for anything but bookplates2 and also1 before passing from ,drer1 the large bookplate for ,dr4 ,hector ,pmer1 the last ,prior of the ,abbey of ,st4 ,laurence in ,nuremberg1 must be mentioned4 ,in itself a beautiful work of art1 it bears a date1 #aebe1 and the wood-engraver's initials1 8,r4 ,a40 ,the drawing is worthy of the hand of ,drer himself1 and 8,r4 ,a40 probably cut the block in ,drer's studio1 from the great master's own design4 ,on the chief shield are the arms of the monastery1 the gridiron of ,st4 ,laurence quartering the arms of ,pomer4 ,by the shield1 stands ,st4 ,laurence holding in one hand a gridiron1 and in the other the martyr's palm4 ,the motto3 8,to the pure all things are pure10 is given1 as was ,drer's wont1 in ,hebrew1 ,greek1 and ,latin4 ,at the bottom of all is the owner's name1 8,d4 ,hector ,pomer ,praepos ,s4 ,lavr40 ,before quite leaving ,drer1 the earliest dated ,german bookplate should be named1 as some think that he had a hand in it1 especially as it was for a friend of his1 ,hieronymus ,ebner von ,eschenbach1 born in ,nuremberg on the #eth of ,january1 #adgg1 educated at ,ingolstadt1 and afterwards in the household of the ,emperor ,maximilian1 he became a learned lawyer and judge4 ,he was a friend and ally of ,martin ,luther1 and engaged in a cultivated correspondence with many of the leaders of that age4 ,following the start given by ,albrecht ,drer1 ,nuremberg continued to be the home of bookplate engraving2 but very soon copper-plate engraving took the place of woodcuts4 ,illustration ,two of the best engravers were two brothers1 ,hans ,sebald ,beham1 born in #aejj1 and ,barthel ,beham1 born in #aejb4 ,both were skilful engravers1 and both were expelled their native city as heretics4 ,the elder engraved the plate for one of ,dr4 ,hector ,pomer's smaller ex libris1 and the younger brother engraved the two varieties of bookplates for ,luther's friend1 ,hieronymous ,baumgartner4 ,he also engraved a plate for ,melchior ,pfinzing1 provost of a church in ,mainz4 ,here we will turn aside from ,germany for a moment just to refer to an undoubted ,english bookplate of this early period4 ,it remains to this day in a book known to have belonged to ,cardinal ,wolsey1 and afterwards to ,henry ,,viii4 ,this1 though not an engraving1 is none the less a bookplate4 ,mr4 ,w4 ,j4 ,hardy1 our best authority on ,english ex libris1 has described it3 ,a carefully drawn sketch of the cardinal's arms1 with supporters1 and surmounted by a cardinal's hat1 the whole coloured by hand4 ,thus the very earliest ,english ex libris of which we know was used by the more than princely ,thomas ,wolsey1 and at some time between #aead and his death in #aecj1 in which interval he was the arbiter of empires1 sometimes journeying attended by a personal retinue of two hundred gentlemen in crimson velvet1 and then1 later1 what a contrast--8,he was without beds1 sheets1 table-cloths1 cups and dishes60 ,matthias ,jundt1 born at ,nuremberg in #adih1 and died in #aehf1 engraved a good number of ex libris4 ,he produced several for members of the ,nuremberg family of ,pfinzing1 and in one of them1 that of ,seyfried ,pfinzing von ,henfenfeld1 there is used one of those fanciful conceits so common of old2 the motto 8,saluti ,patri ,vixisse ,honestat0 is used to show the owner's initials4 ,virgil ,solis1 born at ,nuremberg in #aead1 engraved both on copper and on wood1 working mostly from his own designs4 ,the engravings known to be by him number eight hundred4 ,he engraved an ex libris block for ,gundlach of ,nuremberg in #aeee4 ,it represents ,pomona1 with the arms of ,gundlach and ,frleger1 in a beautiful landscape4 ,in the same year he engraved an armorial and landscape plate for ,andreas ,imhof1 another ,nuremberger4 ,this is our first mention of landscape bookplates1 but it will be by no means the last4 ,the last of this set of engravers whom we will mention was not a native of ,nuremberg1 but came there from ,zurich1 at the age of twenty-one1 in #aefj1 and died there in #aeia4 ,his best work was in woodcuts4 ,the curious in calligraphy will find that he signed his initials in twelve different forms4 ,his name was ,jost ,amman4 ,in ,german ,bookplates1 translated for ,george ,bell and ,sons' ex libris series1 nearly twenty bookplates engraved by ,jost ,amman are enumerated1 and good reproductions are given of several4 ,there is the usual armorial shield1 but a large amount of richly decorative renaissance engraving outside it4 ,in the plate engraved for ,veit ,august ,holzschuher1 the owner has evidently signed his name in a space at the foot of the block left for it4 ,his arms fittingly display a pair of wooden shoes to fit his name4 ,one cannot help wishing that more of these early private ex libris had such a space1 bearing the ancient owner's autograph4 ,,chapter ,,iii ,,bookplates ,,chronologically ,lucas ,cranach--,charles ,v4--,hans ,holbein--,early ,french and ,english bookplates--,sir ,nicholas ,bacon--,queen ,elizabeth--,bookplates that are not armorial--,bookplates in ,switzerland1 ,sweden1 and ,minerva40 ,leaving now the ,nuremberg school1 we come to ,lucas ,cranach the elder4 ,he is just one of those figures of old time of whom one would like to know much more4 ,his chivalrous attachment to ,frederick the ,magnanimous1 the last of three ,electors of ,saxony1 all of whom he served1 points to noble traits of character4 ,he shared all the sufferings of ,frederick the ,magnanimous in the five years that he was in the hands of ,charles ,v41 although himself an old man1 went with him to ,weimar on his release in #aeeb1 and died there in his eighty--first year1 on the #afth ,october1 #aeec4 ,his paintings and engravings are without number1 the latter mostly woodcuts4 ,one special interest of his work is that he was fond of introducing homely portraits of his friends1 and portraits always give great interest to ex libris4 ,among the ex libris from the hand of ,lucas ,cranach the elder are the woodcuts1 in four different sizes1 engraved for the ,library of ,wittenberg ,university1 and each bearing the portrait of ,frederick the ,magnanimous4 ,at the foot of each is the inscription-- 8,et patris1 et patrui1 famam1 virtutibus1 quat4 ,sui patris et patrui1 nobile nomen habet4 ,adserit1 invicto divinum pectore verbum1 ,et ,musas omni dexteritate juvat4 ,hinc etiam ad promptos studiorum contulit usus1 ,inspicis hoc prsens quod modo ,lector opus40 ,hans ,holbein has been credited with the designs for two woodcuts ex libris4 ,with the great amount and variety of work done by ,holbein it would be most natural that he should have designed some ex libris4 ,we of to-day can only deal with what has survived4 ,for instance1 scores of precious works printed three hundred years ago have wholly passed out of knowledge4 ,what a charming bookplate ,hans ,holbein would have invented--who knows that he did not8--say1 for his noble martyr friend ,sir ,thomas ,more--perhaps depicting sweet ,margaret ,roper reading to her father1 adding at foot of the plate some quaint motto from ,erasmus6 ,hans ,holbein lived scarcely forty-six years4 ,next we will mention ,hans ,burgkmaier1 born1 too1 at ,augsburg in #adgc1 and a son of ,hans ,holbein the elder's father-in-law4 ,several ex libris have been assigned to his hand2 but with no certainty4 ,the ,emperor ,maximilian ,i4 was his patron1 and ,albrecht ,drer his friend4 ,now we reach about the time of what1 until lately1 was accounted the earliest ,french bookplate with a date4 ,this bears the brief but comprehensive inscription3 8,ex bibliotheca ,caroli ,albosii4 ,e4 ,eduensis4 ,ex labore quies40 ,the earliest known dated ,english ex libris is also of #aegd2 but we always1 in courtesy1 put our friends before ourselves1 and remember ,napier's splendid remark on hearing that ,lord ,mahon had contemptuously spoken of ,napier's ,history as the best 8,french0 history of the war3 8,i always thought that to be generous to a noble foe was truly ,english1 until my ,lord ,mahon informed me it was wholly ,french40 ,sir ,nicholas ,bacon's bookplate bears his arms with helmet surmounted by crest2 the crest being1 of course1 the only crest that could belong to ,bacon4 ,the ,germans very properly never dreamt that a crest ought to appear anywhere but on a helmet4 ,we have not been so correct4 ,this recalls the blank amazement of a ,german on beholding a ,british officer in plain clothes4 ,i remember thirty years ago1 in ,germany1 my friend ,fitz, roy ,gardner happening to show a photograph of ,field-,marshal ,sir ,john ,burgoyne in plain clothes4 ,the exclamation came at once1 8,he cannot be an officer1 he is not in uniform40 ,this was1 of course1 the chivalrous old warrior who1 in his yacht1 brought the lovely ,empress of the ,french safely to our shores4 ,this very interesting and early ,english bookplate has at the foot ,sir ,nicholas ,bacon's motto3 8,mediocria ,firma10 and we need not go here in full into the point of its date1 which is fairly established4 ,it is with an inscription in books given in #aegd by ,sir ,nicholas ,bacon to ,cambridge ,university4 ,sir ,nicholas1 perhaps best known for being the father of ,francis1 was the close friend of ,cecil1 ,lord ,burleigh1 and ,matthew ,parker1 ,archbishop of ,canterbury1 fellow-ministers with him of ,queen ,elizabeth4 ,queen ,bess often made herself his guest1 and after her visit of six days in #aegg1 her host had the door by which she had passed under his roof nailed up1 so that no one1 after her1 might cross the same threshold4 ,oh for the picturesque days of old6 ,lord ,beaconsfield alone1 in our day1 might have thought of such a graceful act4 ,the second dated engraved ,english bookplate known at present is that of ,sir ,thomas ,tresham1 knighted by ,queen ,bess in #aege4 ,the plate is armorial1 with a huge array of quarterings2 helmet surmounted by crest in proper style4 ,inscription3 8,fecit mihi magna qui potens est4 #aehe4 ,jun4 #bi401 and below the arms3 8,s ,tho3 ,tresame ,knight40 ,sir ,thomas married ,muriel1 daughter of ,sir ,robert ,throckmorton1 and their son was ,francis1 8a wylde and unstayed man10 who first engaged in1 and then revealed1 the ,gunpowder ,plot4 ,the father's dying1 in #afje1 was probably the cause of the son's not going forward in the plot1 as he inherited property which would steady his aspirations4 ,sir ,thomas left interesting memories of himself in fine buildings2 and particularly in his own county of ,northampton1 the market-house at ,rothwell1 and the triangular lodge at ,rushton4 ,a characteristic ,german plate of about #aegj is that of ,johann ,hector zum ,jungen1 with his name thus engraved in full under his arms1 and the ,latin motto3 8,memorare nouissima tua10 at the top of the plate4 ,in the earliest ex libris we did not find the owners' names engraved4 ,so far almost everything has been purely armorial1 and now we will turn to something different4 ,this is a #aehh ,german plate2 certainly it bears a small shield of arms1 but most of the plate is occupied with the following engraved inscription3 8,reverendus et ,nobilis ,dominus ,wolfgangus ,andreas ,rem ,ketz1 ,cathedralis ,ecclesia ,august3 ,sum3 ,prpositus1 librum hunc un cum mille et tribus aliis1 variisque instrumentis ,mathematicis1 ,bibliothec ,monasterii ,s4 ,crucis ,august1 ad perpetuum ,conventualium usum4 ,anno ,christi ,m4,d4,,lxxxviii4 ,testamento legauit40 ,we have noticed #aegd as the date of the earliest ,english dated bookplate1 the next dated is not until #aehe1 and in ,france the gap is still wider2 #aegd is the earliest dated ,french plate1 and the next that has been found is dated #afaa4 ,in ,sweden1 too1 many years passed after the #aeie example without a dated successor4 ,in ,switzerland1 also1 where the earliest dated ex libris was in #afjg1 a long interval followed1 in which we do not find dated ,swiss ex libris4 ,in ,italy we do not find any dated ex libris before #afbc4 ,this #afaa plate is that of ,alexandre ,bouchart1 ,viscount de ,blosseville4 ,this was found in a folio copy of the works of ,ptolemy printed at ,amsterdam in #afje1 in the ,bibliothque ,nationale in ,paris4 ,the graver-work and probably the design1 too1 was done by ,leonard ,gaultier1 who also executed an engraved portrait of ,alexandre ,bouchart4 ,leonard ,gaultier was born at ,mayence in about #aefa1 and died in ,paris in #afda1 having engraved above eight hundred plates4 ,herr ,carlander1 the chief authority for ,swedish bookplates1 finds #aeif the earliest date1 and this on the plate of ,senator ,thure ,bielke1 of whom we do not know much more than that to his own cost he took the wrong side in politics1 was beheaded in #afjj1 and had therefore no further use for his dated ex libris4 ,a ,german ex libris of near this date is interesting1 as1 like a good many others1 it is to be found in three sizes4 ,this is the ex libris of ,johann ,baptist ,zeyll1 designed by ,p4 ,opel1 and cut on wood by ,c4 ,l4 in #aeic4 ,of course now in the days of photography it is easy to have your bookplate in several sizes2 but it was far otherwise in these old times4 ,next must be named a plate engraved in #afac for placing in the books presented by ,william ,willmer1 a ,northamptonshire gentleman1 to his college library in ,cambridge4 ,mr4 ,griggs reproduced it among his eighty-three armorial examples4 ,it is inscribed 8,sydney ,sussex ,colledge ,ex dono ,wilhelmi ,willmer de ,sywell in ,com4 ,northamtoni1 ,armigeri1 quondam pentionarii in ista ,domi4 ,vizin ,anno ,domini #aeii seddedit in ,an ,di #afac40 ,in ,france1 as likewise in ,england1 there are hardly any dated bookplates at this period4 ,mr4 ,walter ,hamilton1 in writing of ,french ex libris before #afej1 refers to three in different sizes1 all engraved for ,jean ,bigot1 ,sieur de ,sommesnil2 and somewhat later1 another set differing from the former1 and with the owner's name engraved as ,johannes ,bigot4 ,after that we read of three bookplates engraved for the son1 ,l4 ,e4 ,bigot4 ,in this connection the late ,mr4 ,walter ,hamilton is drawn on to give particulars of a family of ardent book collectors1 thus incidentally illustrating very happily how the possession of one dirty scrap of paper--an old ex libris--may lead on from one fascinating inquiry to another4 ,a fine characteristic ,german ecclesiastical ex libris of #afbd is the plate given--page #ccj1 ,george ,bell and ,sons--of ,otto ,gereon von ,gutmann1 ,doctor of ,theology1 ,electoral ,councillor1 and ,suffragan ,bishop of ,cologne4 ,a very fine armorial plate1 of which we do not know the designer1 the engraver1 nor the date1 is that of ,alexandre ,petau4 ,his father1 ,paul ,petau1 ,conseiller au ,parlement de ,paris1 died in #afac1 bequeathing to his son a fine library of manuscripts and printed books4 ,a bookplate in two sizes1 engraved for ,claude ,sarrau1 ,councillor to the ,parliament of ,paris4 ,he died in #afea1 and his son ,isaac1 in #afed1 edited his father's correspondence with the learned of his time4 ,the larger ,sarrau plate1 and probably the smaller as well1 were engraved by ,isaac ,briot1 who was born in #aehe1 and died in ,paris in #afgj4 ,reaching the seventeenth century1 we find ,german ex libris multiplying greatly1 but not improving in design4 ,armorial bookplates still predominate1 but the shield is often in one way or another surrounded by wreaths of leaves and flowers4 ,it can hardly be insisted on too clearly that there is nothing mysterious1 though much that is interesting1 about the varying modes and manners of ex libris4 ,they1 in fact1 represented the art1 customs1 learning1 and taste of successive ages4 ,thus turn to ,johann ,sibmacher's ,wappenbchlein1 published in #aeif1 and you will find plenty of illustrations of these wreaths1 though with no reference to bookplates4 ,,chapter ,,iv ,,bookplates ,,chronologically ,the seventeenth century begins--,german plates--,william ,marshall--,lord ,littleton--,huet1 ,bishop of ,avranches4 ,in #afjd ,egidius ,sadeler of ,munich engraved for ,arnold von ,reyger a plate which is both signed and dated4 ,at the top of the plate is the ,latin motto 8,ad ,deum ,refugium10 and in another part of the plate are the letters 8,z4 ,g4 ,m4 ,z410 standing for 8,zu ,gott meine ,zuflucht10 the ,german version of the ,latin motto4 ,in #afai ,hans ,hauer designed and ,hans ,troschel engraved a characteristic and very elaborate ex libris for ,johann ,wilhelm ,krep von ,krepenstein1 of ,nuremberg4 ,both designer and engraver were natives of ,nuremberg1 the former born in #aehb1 and the latter about six years later4 ,in about the year #afbc ,raphael ,sadeler engraved a bookplate in three sizes for the ,electoral ,library of the ,dukes of ,bavaria at ,munich4 ,he also engraved a plate for the ,elector ,palatine's libraries in ,heidelberg and in ,rome4 ,raphael ,sadeler and his elder brother ,jan1 and their nephew ,gillis or ,egidius ,sadeler1 were all skilful with the graver4 ,raphael was born at ,brussels in #aeee1 and with his elder brother travelled through ,germany1 producing many engravings1 and afterwards settling at ,venice4 ,egidius1 the nephew1 was born at ,antwerp in #aege2 taught by his uncles ,jan and ,raphael1 he lived to far surpass his teachers4 ,after spending some time in ,italy1 he was invited to ,prague by the ,emperor ,rudolph ,,ii4 ,he died at ,prague in #afbi4 ,in #afdj1 or a little earlier1 ,william ,marshall engraved a bookplate for ,edward1 ,lord ,littleton1 born in #aehi at ,munston1 in ,shropshire1 his father being ,sir ,edward ,littleton1 ,chief ,justice of ,north ,wales1 and his mother being a daughter of ,edmund ,walter1 ,chief ,justice of ,south ,wales4 ,from ,christ ,church1 ,oxford1 ,littleton1 in #afjh1 entered the ,inner ,temple4 ,on his father's death1 in #afba1 he became ,chief ,justice of ,north ,wales4 ,in #afbe he became member of ,parliament for ,leominster4 ,he became counsel to the ,university of ,oxford1 ,reader to the ,inner ,temple1 and ,recorder of ,london4 ,in #afcd he was made ,solicitor-,general4 ,in the meantime his great learning and high character made him much respected1 and the ,city ,aldermen sent him a courteous gift of two hogsheads of claret and a pipe of canary4 ,next1 he became ,chief ,justice of the ,common ,pleas1 and soon ,lord ,chancellor4 ,in ,february1 #afda1 he was created ,lord ,littleton of ,munston4 ,happily for him he died young1 as in those stormy times he was too just a man to be a good party politician4 ,it is interesting to note that on ,may #bast1 #afdd1 he was commissioned to raise a regiment of foot soldiers1 consisting of gentlemen of the ,inns of ,court and ,chancery and others1 himself becoming colonel4 ,the great ,lord ,clarendon wrote of ,littleton as a 8handsome and proper man of a very graceful presence1 and notorious for courage1 which in his youth he had manifested with his sword40 ,above all1 ,littleton was incorruptible1 winning1 and keeping the respect of such opposite men as ,clarendon and ,bulstrode ,whitelocke4 ,here we get a glimpse of his library1 as it is recorded that when the ,commons seized his books ,whitelocke interceded and got the books given into his own care1 so that1 as he expressed it1 8when ,god gave them a happy accommodation0 he might restore them to rightful hands4 ,the arms on the bookplate are the arms of ,lyttelton of ,frankley4 ,littleton's first wife was a daughter of ,john ,lyttelton 7spelt as you please7 of ,frankley1 ,worcestershire4 ,littleton died at ,oxford on ,august #bgth1 #afde1 and is buried in ,christ ,church ,cathedral4 ,not the least interesting point about this ,littleton plate is that it was engraved by ,william ,marshall1 a name or initials found on such a great number of portraits and other book illustrations of this period4 ,not very much is known about him4 ,the dates of his works range from #aeia to #afdi4 ,a characteristic ,german plate1 dated #afde1 is1 by the good authority of ,warnecke1 the work of the engraver ,raphael ,custos of ,augsburg1 eldest son of ,dominicus de ,coster1 painter and engraver1 and grandson of ,pieter ,de ,coster or ,balten1 poet and painter4 ,this plate1 engraved for ,wilhelm and ,clara ,krep von ,krepenstein1 embraces the coats-of-arms of the small number of thirty-one ancestors4 8cur numen habet justu move #d eneid4 inde cruce hinc trutina armatus regique deoque milito disco meis hc duo nempe libris ex libris ,petri ,maridat in magno ,regis consilio ,senatoris0 are the inscriptions on the plate here illustrated of ,theophilus ,raynaud or ,raynald1 born in ,piedmont1 and died at the age of eighty in ,lyons on ,october #cast1 #affc4 ,he was a learned ,jesuit1 and a most untiring student all his life1 but1 unlike most inveterate readers1 he was bitter and morose of temper4 ,perhaps this was caused by his reading excesses1 as it is told that he thought fifteen minutes almost too much to give to any meal4 ,his portrait is in his3 8tractatus depileo1 cterisque capitis tegminibus tam sacris quam profanis4 ,d4 ,d4 ,petro de ,maridat1 in magno ,regis ,christianissimi ,consilio ,senatori dicatus40 ,under the portrait is the shield-of-arms1 as on the bookplate1 and above it the motto3 8,dextera ,domini fecit virtutem40 ,below is3 8,non potuit clum ,capiti par addere1 tegmen1 ,hoc ,cli effigiem perficientis erit40 ,the engraving is signed 8,l ,spirinx fecit40 ,nagler gives ,ludwig ,spirinx as an engraver born at ,lyons or ,dijon1 and working in ,brussels from about #afdj to #affj4 ,coming once more to ,nuremberg1 there is the #afgd plate engraved by ,d4 ,krger for ,colonel ,georg ,christof ,volckamer4 ,there is no inscription on the plate1 which shows a cherub sitting on a hill and holding a shield-of-arms4 ,the colonel was not content to choose between helmet and coronet2 he has elected to have both4 ,one of the many plates of which the engraver is not known is that of ,franz ,ludwig ,anton ,freiherr von ,lerchenfeld-,prennberg4 ,the shield is borne on two flags crossing one another4 ,at the foot of the plate is engraved 8,ex ,libris1 ,francisci ,ludovici10 etc41 giving all the owner's titles4 ,he was ,chamberlain of the ,munich ,high ,court of ,appeal4 ,a well-known plate is that of ,pierre ,daniel ,huet1 ,bishop of ,avranches1 and probably the best-remembered holder of that ancient ,see1 and tenant of the famous ,bishop's ,palace4 ,he was ,bishop of ,avranches from #afhi to #afii1 but1 born at ,caen in #afcj1 he was already1 in #afej1 a renowned savant1 and twelve years later founded the ,academy of ,sciences at ,caen4 ,he did not become a priest until he was forty-six years old2 but all his life he was an enormous reader1 and gifted with a wondrous memory4 ,of course he wrote books as well as reading the lore of others4 ,at ,avranches visitors1 calling for advice from their bishop1 were told 8,he cannot see you1 he is studying02 and in vain they claimed that they wanted to see a diocesan who had finished his studies4 ,the plate was engraved in four sizes for the ,jesuits' ,college in ,paris1 to which he gave his library in #afib4 ,as he spent the latter years of his long life with the ,paris ,jesuits he was not long separated from his books1 and lived ninety-two years1 so that none might say that in him much study had produced a weariness of the flesh4 ,in #afib another library1 left this time by will1 and accordingly1 too1 another ex libris1 came to the ,jesuits of ,paris1 and from a friend of ,huet1 ,gilles ,mnage4 ,like ,huet1 his appetite for study was vast and his memory unfailing4 ,born at ,angers in #afac1 he died in ,paris in #afib4 ,thus he spent some eighty years among the shrewd litterateurs of that day1 and the following conversation need not be taken as a sign of want of veracity on his part4 ,angers seems1 like ,crete of old1 to have had a lying reputation4 ,he1 asking a lady to define untruthfulness1 received for reply1 that as for defining lying she did not quite know1 but liar she would define as 8,monsieur ,mnage60 ,it will be seen how little it had yet become the custom for bibliophiles to have bookplates4 ,neither ,huet nor ,mnage used ex libris for themselves1 and to this day no bookplate of ,molire1 or ,racine1 or ,la ,fontaine1 or of many other leaders of that age has been found4 ,after about #afej a change is seen in the styles of ,french ex libris4 ,helmets go out of use1 and1 for lack of better ideas1 coronets are assumed1 often by those who had not the faintest right to them4 ,the square shield1 in time1 gives place to the oval form4 ,,chapter ,v ,,bookplates ,,chronologically ,some ,french and some ,german plates--,the cap of liberty--,buonaparte--,alsace and ,lorraine4 ,as a date is always a signal advantage1 the bookplate 8,petri ,antonii ,convers ,laudonensis4 ,l ,monnier ,divione4 #agfb0 may be mentioned4 ,it is1 of course1 topped by the irrepressible coronet4 ,louis ,gabriel ,monnier was born at ,besanon in #agcc1 and died at ,dijon in #ahjd4 ,the ,convers plate is wholly ,rococo2 but taking from ,walter ,hamilton another ,french ex libris engraved but nine years later1 we see that with some artists the heavy brigade is already on duty4 ,here we have a big gun1 an armorial shield flanked by three flags on each side1 but without any graceful design4 ,still the inevitable coronet1 and below all1 the inscription3 8,le ,ch4 ,d ,bellehache officier de ,cavalerie au ,reg ,d'artois _/ #agga40 ,here1 after all1 there is no possibility of mistaking for whom this plate was engraved1 ,illustration and thus1 though not beautiful1 it quite fulfils its duty4 ,sixteen years later we have a plate which also has these essential points1 but is in the shell-work mode1 light and elegant4 ,round the upper part is a label inscribed3 8,ex libris ,ant4 ,franc ,alex ,boula de ,nanteuil10 and at the base3 8,libellorum suplicum ,magister4 mandatis ,regi --et in suprem ,galliarum curi senator ad horrorem4 #aggg40 ,the shield is azure1 three bezants4 ,here is an instance of an ex libris not inserted1 but impressed1 seemingly a copper-plate engraving4 ,the design is simple2 but quite serves its purpose4 ,it is an oval frame surmounted by a ribbon tied in a bow1 and in the oval the words 8,ex ,bibliotheca ,ecclesia ,aug4 ,conf4 ,posson40 ,the book is a copy of ,prodromus idiomatis 444 adparatus criticus ad linguam ,hungaricam 444 auctore ,georgio ,kalmar 444 ,posonii1 444 #aggj4 ,the copy bears also another ownership inscription--in other words1 another ex libris3 8,obtulit _/ ,frider4 ,frank4 _/ ,posen4 _/ #aghi4 _/0 ,a curious plate here illustrated is that of ,peter ,mairdat4 ,of about #aghj is the copper-plate of ,klemens ,wenzel1 ,duke of ,saxony1 ,prince of ,bland1 ,elector-,archbishop of ,trier1 and ,bishop of ,augsburg4 ,the plate represents the arms of ,augsburg1 of ,trier1 of ,saxony1 and also of ,poland4 ,this is not the place to write the story of the first great ,french ,revolution2 but it is to the point of our subject in hand to note that on ,june #bjth1 #agij1 a decree was proposed and passed in the ,french ,assembly suppressing the titles of duke1 count1 marquis1 viscount1 baron1 and chevalier1 and at the same time all armorial bearings were done away with4 ,now followed a bad time for bookplate artists and engravers4 ,the cap of liberty and the bloody guillotine do not breathe high artistic inspiration4 ,the plate of ,marshal ,jourdan consists chiefly of a shield wholly occupied with the simple inscription 8,bibliothque du ,marchal ,jourdan40 ,coming to the days of the first ,empire1 ,buonaparte1 the despot1 ruled armorial insignia with the same iron hand as he regulated anything else4 ,his orders and restrictions were numberless1 and in particular he introduced the various forms of a headdress denominated une toque4 ,cities under ,buonaparte's sway bore certain badges according to whether he ranked them as cities of the first1 second1 or third order4 ,illustration ,those of the first order had the honour of bearing the ,napoleon badge--three golden bees on a chief gules4 ,the bookplate of the ,bastille is well illustrated in ,french ,bookplates 7,walter ,hamilton71 but must not be quite passed over here4 ,it represents a shield on a bracket1 bearing the fleur-de-lis4 ,the shield is ensigned with a crown and enclosed by the collars of the orders of ,s4 ,michel and the ,sainte ,esprit4 ,above all is the name 8chateau royal de la bastille40 ,in ,july of #aghi the ,bastille was destroyed by the ,paris mob4 ,i give a reproduction of the characteristic ,french 8,ex libris du ,comte ,paul de ,malden de la ,bastille40 ,in the ex libris of ,claude ,martin1 cannon1 cannon-balls and flags1 tents and scaling-ladders1 are to the fore2 whilst on a rock in the middle there is a lion rampant1 holding up a sword in one fore paw and an ensign in the other4 ,since the ,belgians disfigured the field of ,waterloo with a huge mound to celebrate the tiny devotion of their race1 a lion on a hill does not stand for much6 ,at the head of this plate is the motto 8,labore et constantia10 and at the foot 8,ex libris ,claudii ,martin40 ,in #ahad ,napoleon ,buonaparte abdicated1 and in the same year ,louis ,,xviii41 the younger brother of ,louis ,,xvi41 became king4 ,in #ahbd ,louis ,,xviii4 died1 and his younger brother1 ,charles ,x41 came to the throne1 which he held until #ahcj1 when he was deposed1 and his cousin ,louis ,philippe sat on this unstable throne4 ,in #ahdh he in turn abdicated1 and a ,republic was proclaimed1 with ,louis ,napoleon as ,president4 ,during these foregone thirty years the old nobility1 after a manner1 recovered their ancient titles1 and many new nobility were created2 but it cannot be said to have been an age productive of fine or interesting ex libris4 ,a variety from the sometimes too stern formality of ex libris designs is found in the plate engraved by ,d4 ,collin for ,monsieur ,riston4 ,a fantastic ,r41 or perhaps ,a4 ,r41 is figured on an oval1 with child figures1 a few books1 and a pen and ink1 all apparently in the open-air around4 ,the ex libris of ,pierre ,antoine ,berryer is not of any striking character1 but is a fair specimen4 ,in #ahee he was elected to the ,acadmie ,francaise2 but he was best known for his great defence of ,count ,montalembert before the ,french ,courts in #aheh4 ,alsace and ,lorraine have given us some good specimens of bookplates1 and as might be expected1 the manners and styles of several nations are here included4 ,in some an interesting feature is the introduction of a view of the owner's parish church4 ,,chapter ,,vi ,,bookplates ,,with ,,mantling ,viscount ,cholmondeley--,james ,loch of ,drylaw--,william ,pitt of ,binfield4 ,mr4 ,g4 ,f4 ,barwick1 to whom the ,mercator ex libris belongs1 has kindly sent me the fame as a mathematician was already well established1 and he was almost immediately elected a member of the ,royal ,society1 which had recently been founded4 ,some years later he entered the service of ,louis ,,xiv41 and superintended the construction of the fountains at ,versailles4 ,for this work1 however1 he could not obtain payment1 in consequence of his refusal to become a ,catholic1 and the trouble which it caused him is said to have shortened his life4 ,he wrote a number of ,illustration small treatises and contributed to the ,philosophical ,transactions1 but his fame chiefly rests upon his ,logarithmotechnia1 ,london1 #affh-gd1 #dto1 in which he developed the well-known formula which bears his name4 ,a portrait of him was formerly in the possession of ,mr4 ,t4 ,d4 ,f4 ,tatham of ,it is most fitting that the book holding these ,scottish bookplates is a fine copy of the first edition of the great ,montrose's ,book1 the book which the canting ,covenanters hung round that hero's neck as he proudly trod the bloody scaffold4 ,it is clothed in fine contemporary morocco1 richly gilt4 ,a modern bookplate with nice mantling is that of 8,charles ,lilburn40 ,the family hails from the county of ,durham4 ,the arms argent1 three water-bougets sable4 ,crest1 a dexter arm in armour proper1 holding a truncheon or4 ,the motto is 8,vis viri fragilis40 ,this is in a copy of ,montrose ,redivivus1 or the ,portraicture of ,james1 late ,marquess of ,montrose1 444 ,london3 ,printed for ,jo4 ,ridley at the ,castle in ,fleet ,street1 near ,ram-alley1 #afeb4 ,the water-bouget was a medival vessel for carrying water1 and was made of two leather pouches appended to a yoke or crossbar4 ,the 8,hampson0 plate is1 in its way1 as good a bookplate as one need wish to see4 ,the clearly cut mantling is tastefully decked with light sprigs of evergreen4 ,the arms are argent1 three hemp-brakes sable4 ,the crest is out of a mural crown argent1 a greyhound's head sable collared of the in #afee1 leaving four sons and five daughters4 ,the hempbrake1 or hackle1 was an instrument used for bruising hemp4 ,the royal plate of ,charles ,i4 needs some explanation1 as it is not a bookplate4 ,it occupies the first leaf in the full-sized octavo issues in #afdi of ,eikon ,basilike4 ,in photographing the ,throckmorton bookplate the photographer1 seeing this also at the beginning of the book1 not unnaturally thought that it was a bookplate1 and to be illustrated4 ,this need not be regretted4 ,it is a characteristic copy of an ,eikon4 ,the surrounding lines are old red ink1 and the old ownership signature-- ,illustration ,illustration 8,fra3 ,vaughan0 83#afef30 is as true and perfect an ex libris as the finest draughtsman and engraver could ever produce4 ,the very fine armorial plate of ,sir ,robert ,throckmorton1 ,bart4--8,virtus sola nobilitas0--is here reproduced from the above-named #afdi copy of ,eikon ,basilike4 ,the armorial plate1 with supporters1 of ,sir ,james ,stewart ,denholm1 ,bart41 of ,coltness and ,westshiel1 is here illustrated4 ,i do not know the history of the plate with the two oval shields here illustrated4 ,the motto1 8,mors sola resolvit10 seems rather to suggest a funeral hatchment4 ,the illustration here given of the plate of 8,tho4 ,beckwith1 of ,york ,painter ,f4,a4,s40 is1 of course1 a piece of his own workmanship1 and is inserted in a small1 thick volume of manuscript genealogies1 no doubt the work of ,t4 ,beckwith1 and now in the library of ,mr4 ,edward ,f4 ,coates4 ,thomas ,beckwith was of an ancient1 if not distinguished1 ,yorkshire family4 ,he was born at ,rothwell in #agcj1 8and served his time to ,george ,fleming1 an ingenious man and house painter1 from whom he acquired his skill in drawing and painting1 and imbibed a love for antiquities40 ,by means of his great knowledge of genealogies he composed manuscript pedigrees for some of the leading families of the ,north of ,england4 ,he was not only an unwearied collector1 but very generous in imparting information4 ,he died at ,york on ,february #agth1 #aghf4 ,illustration ,,chapter ,,vii ,,some ,,specimens ,,inserted ,,in ,a ,,book ,,kept ,,in libris in a book kept for the purpose in the ,british ,museum4 ,the press mark is ,c #ff f#c3-- 8,frhr4 v4 ,barckhaus ,wiesenhtten ,bibliotheck0 is the inscription on the ornamental bracket of an elaborate armorial plate1 with two most amiable-looking young lions holding up the shield4 ,on the same page in the same collection is a plate of somewhere near the same date1 and hardly armorial4 ,the form of the plate is1 for the most part1 a representation of carved stonework4 ,in the middle is a sort of oval shield1 and within that a shield with a figure of a man with a child on one shoulder4 ,along the base of the structure are the words3 8,ex libr ,chro ,theop, christoff ,ulme40 ,a few books are standing on the ground against the stonework1 and1 as oftens happens in looking at such plates1 one hopes they are not rare books or in interesting bindings1 as one would like to take more care of them4 ,in the same collection is a remarkable plate giving a view of a library interior1 enclosed in a richly decorated oval frame4 ,at foot the inscription3 8,ex libris d4 zach3 conr3 at uffenbach1 m4f401 and above3 8non omnibus idem est quod placet petron fragm40 ,at the very bottom1 in tiniest letters1 is 8,j ,u ,kraus sculp40 ,johann ,ulrich ,kraus was born at ,augsburg in #afde1 and died there in #agai4 ,he was a pupil of ,melchior ,ksel2 he imitated the manner of ,sebastien ,le ,clerc and did a large amount of engraving for the booksellers4 ,a handsome plate is that 8,ex ,bibliotheca ,j4 ,s4 ,ochs1 at ,ochsentein40 ,it is a plate with heavy mantling to the shield4 ,an ox is1 of course1 prominent in arms and crest4 8,p ,feber sc0 is in the corner4 ,there is another very much smaller1 but almost identical plate4 ,from the same collection1 and of rather uncertain date1 is a plate subscribed3 8,ex bibliotheca rosenbergiana40 ,a rose tree is appropriately prominent in arms and crest4 ,another example is simply a ,chippendale fancy shell frame enclosing the words3 8,ex supellectile libraria ,bened3 ,guil3 ,zahnii40 ,a bookplate very roughly engraved1 and with some very curious-looking heraldry1 is that subscribed 8malmendier4 de malmedye10 and 8solum forti patria est40 ,there is a circular plate with a ,library view1 and the library itself is evidently circular1 the plate being engraved 8,bibliotheca regia parmensis40 ,apollo1 looking very cold1 stands on a pedestal in the middle1 holding his garment instead of putting it on1 and sitting down quietly to read the books4 ,round the upper part is inscribed 8,apollini palatino sacram40 ,an armorial plate with fine mantling1 then a helmet3 on that a crown1 and over that1 for crest1 a man girdled1 holding in right hand a mallet1 and in left a flag4 ,under the shield is the name engraved3 8,a4 ,w4 ,schlegel von ,gottleben40 ,pasted on to the same page is a plain small ex libris--arms1 a fleur-de-lis2 name1 8,franz ,salmon ,wss40 ,here is a plate which appears to be round4 ,in the middle is placed what seems to be meant for a tomb1 with a book placed open at the words3 8vita lux hominum ,joh ,i v #d40 ,near1 and on the vault is engraved3 8adhuc stat terminus40 ,round the outside circle of the plate is engraved3 8lex est non poena mort40 ,other plates of interest in this collection are those of ,christian ,gottlieb ,joher1 on page #e1 ,godefrid ,j4 ,f4 ,thomas1 on page #bc1 and on page #bg a plate dated #ageg4 ,mr4 ,barwick's plate of a ,baron ,bunsen is1 he assures me1 not that of the ,baron ,bunsen so familiar to1 and appreciated by1 cultivated ,english readers1 not a generation ago4 ,the plate is nice1 as any approach to simplicity is always pleasing4 ,the shield1 hung from the coronet by the ribband of some order1 is not loaded with charges4 ,dexter1 a lion between two fleur-de-lis1 sinister1 three heads of barleycorn4 ,the motto1 too1 is reverential and in keeping3 8,in spe et silentio40 ,below all is the legend1 8ex libris christiani caroli bunsen4 ,uratislavi ad eadem ,s4 ,elis ,ecclesiastes40 ,j4 ,b4 ,stracchusky ,sc ,urat4 ,uratislavia spells ,breslau1 but very curiously the name ,uratislavia seems to have some fitness on a bookplate2 as in ,zedler's wonderful ,lexicon1 of some sixty-six volumes1 it is recorded of ,jacob de ,uratislavia1 a ,benedictine monk who died in #adhj1 that his literary labours were so vast that seven powerful steeds could scarce drag his load of books4 ,illustration ,illustration ,mr4 ,g4 ,f4 ,barwick has lent me three quite different ,wrest ,park bookplates4 ,in an ornamental frame1 which forms the lower part of one1 is engraved 8,thomas ,philip1 ,earl de ,grey1 ,wrest ,park40 ,two fearful-looking dragons support the shield1 or rather seem bent on devouring the shield and then each other4 ,above is an earl's coronet1 and below the motto1 8,foy est tout40 ,thomas ,philip1 ,earl de ,grey1 was born in #agha1 and was the elder son of ,thomas ,robinson1 second ,baron ,grantham1 and his wife the second daughter of ,philip ,york1 second ,earl of ,hardwicke4 ,he was therefore a descendant of ,henry ,grey1 ninth ,earl of ,kent4 ,in #ahcc his maternal aunt1 ,amabel ,hume ,campbell1 ,countess de ,grey of ,wrest1 in ,bedfordshire1 dying1 he became second ,earl de ,grey and ,baron ,lucas of ,crudwell1 ,wiltshire4 ,from #ahda to #ahdd he was ,lord-,lieutenant of ,ireland1 and achieved great success in his administration there4 ,in #ahdd he was made a ,knight of the ,garter4 ,the second of these plates consists of two crests1 a dragon and a stag1 encircled by the garter4 ,above is the earl's coronet1 and over that the inscription 8,wrest ,park40 ,neither of the other plates has the garter4 ,in what1 for distinction1 may be called the third plate1 the outspread and double-headed black eagle holding the shield-of-arms is the most prominent object1 and in each beak it holds what1 as argent1 no doubt is a silver coin1 but looks rather like an ,osborne biscuit4 ,mr4 ,barwick has also two bookplates of 8,sir ,john ,william ,lubbock4 ,bart40 ,below the shield is the happy motto3 8,auctor pretiosa facit40 ,john ,william ,lubbock was born in #ahjc1 and in #ahdj succeeded his father in the baronetcy4 ,he died in #ahfe4 ,his scientific tastes and cultivated habits were just such as his own son1 ,sir ,john ,lubbock1 has pursued happily for so many years1 in the knowledge of many now living4 ,the other plate is evidently what he used for his books in his earlier years4 ,the bloody hand of ,ulster is absent from the shield1 and below the shield is simply the monogram 8,j4 ,w4 ,l40 ,the ,sir ,john ,frederick1 ,bart41 plate of ,mr4 ,barwick's is quite a change from the customary conventions4 ,the shield fills a very small part of an oblong oval frame4 ,the arms are by ,burke1 or on a chief azure1 three doves argent4 ,crest on a chapeau azure turned-up ermine1 a dove1 within the beak an olive branch4 ,mr4 ,barwick has two ex libris of ,thomas ,illustration ,james ,tatham1 ,esq41 a gentleman of ,bedford ,place1 ,russell ,square1 ,london1 and a third which has belonged to some near kindred4 ,it agrees with that which has merely the crest1 but has engraved underneath3 8,t4 ,d4 ,f4 ,tatham40 ,his chief plate has dexter1 argent a chevron gules between three swan's necks1 coupled sable4 ,sinister are presumably his wife's arms4 ,crest on a trumpet or1 a swan's wings displayed sable4 ,mr4 ,carruthers has1 with great kindness1 contributed the following in reference to his interesting bookplate3-- 8,the notion of the plate was to introduce two plants named by botanists after me4 ,many genera of plants have received their names in this way4 8,the outside plant was called ,carruthersia scandius ,seem4 by ,dr4 ,seemann in his ,flora ,vitiensis1 ,london1 #ahfe-gc4 ,i described the ferns in this work 7pp4 #cca-cgh71 and otherwise had given assistance4 ,the plant is described on pp4 #aee1 #aef1 and figured on ,table ,,xxx4 ,appended to the description of the genus is this note3 #8,i have named this new genus in honour of my esteemed friend ,william ,carruthers1 ,esq41 ,f4,z4,s41 of the ,botanical ,department1 ,british ,museum1 to whom ,i am indebted for much kind assistance in working up the ,south ,sea flora4' 8,the inner flower was named by ,otto ,kunze ,carruthia ,capensis1 ,o4,k4 ,it was originally called ,aitonia ,capensis by ,linnus the younger1 but a different plant had been previously named ,aitonia4 ,botanists do not allow the same name to be applied to different plants that are widely separated4 ,o4 ,kunze wished to associate the plant with my name1 and1 following an example set by ,linnus1 he cut off the last syllable and formed a generic name which could not be confounded with ,seemann's generic name4 ,this arose from a curious accident4 ,o4 ,kunze called on me at the ,natural ,history ,museum1 and asked me to let him see the specimens of ,aitonia4 ,i inquired which ,aitonia1 and1 showing him a seal ,i was wearing which belonged to ,aiton1 who had engraved on it the ,cape plant named after him1 ,i asked if that was the plant4 ,he exclaimed #8,how strange6 that is the plant4' ,i showed him the specimen that the younger ,linnus had named1 which was in the ,herbarium4 ,when ,kunze published the results of his work on these plants he gave it the name ,carruthia ,capensis4 ,the seal was oval1 and the drawing in the ,illustration centre is taken from the seal4 ,i used for separation of the two plants an ornamental border of an early ,edinburgh printer1 ,i believe1 for ,i got it in the binding of an old ,edinburgh book4 ,and the motto belongs to the section of the ,carruthers tribe to which we belong4 8,the drawing was made by ,w4 ,g4 ,smith1 ,f4,z4,s41 a good botanist and an excellent draughtsman40 ,,chapter ,,viii ,,chippendale ,,and ,,crestplates ,william ,sharp the ,engraver--,the ,rev4 ,john ,watson--,edward ,trotter--,patrick ,colquhoun4 ,the few following bookplates are all in the manner known as ,chippendale3-- ,the ,chippendale bookplate here given1 with 8,wm4 ,sharp0 engraved at the foot of it1 was one1 we may suppose1 engraved by ,william ,sharp1 the engraver1 for himself4 ,he was the son of a gunmaker1 in days when gun-barrels and other parts of guns were often finely engraved4 ,william ,sharp was born in #agdi1 died at ,chiswick on ,july #beth1 #ahbd4 ,seeing that he became an engraver of very great skill and originality1 the main points of his life are well worth recording4 ,born in ,haydon ,yard in the ,minories1 his father apprenticed him to ,barak ,longmate1 an engraver and genealogist4 ,out of his indentures1 he ,illustration ,illustration soon married a ,frenchwoman1 and set up in ,bartholomew ,lane as a writing engraver4 ,about #aghb he sold this business and migrated to ,vauxhall1 where he now pursued the higher branches of his art4 ,true to the prophet's fate1 he was in due course elected an honorary member of the ,imperial ,academy at ,vienna and of the ,royal ,academy at ,munich4 ,in early days he had been a friend of ,thomas ,paine and ,horne ,tooke1 and was1 in fact1 examined before the ,privy ,council on treasonable charges1 but soon dismissed as a harmless enthusiast4 ,after becoming a convert to ,swedenborg1 he became a brave upholder of ,joanna ,southcott1 and was the very last of her adherents to admit the reality of her death4 ,a good ,chippendale plate is that of 8,the ,rev4 ,john ,watson40 ,he was born on ,march #bfth1 #agbe1 at ,lyme ,handley in the parish of ,prestbury1 ,cheshire1 and became a learned antiquary4 ,he was elected ,f4,s4,a4 in #agei1 and contributed six papers to ,archologia4 ,in #agge appeared his best-known work4 ,the ,history and ,antiquities of the ,parish of died at ,westminster on ,april #beth1 #ahbj4 ,the following are a few crest bookplates named together3-- ,illustration ,the ,marshall crest1 a man in armour proper1 holding in the dexter hand a truncheon or1 forms the very picturesque modern ex libris of 8,f4 ,a4 ,marshall40 ,the motto is fitting3 8,nunquam sedeo40 ,this in a collection of ,actes1 printed by ,pynson in #aeab-aead1 8concernynge--,archerye--,crossbows--,mu mmers10 and other quaint subjects4 ,as a specimen of a crest bookplate there is the 8,beavan10 which is simply the name ,beavan under two crests1 one a dove with outspread wings and a ring in its beak1 the other a lion4 ,this can hardly be called a satisfactory plate4 ,it is in a volume of ,the ,edinburgh ,review of #ahbf4 ,a pretty crestplate is that of 8,henry ,st4 ,clair ,feilden40 ,the crest is a nuthatch feeding on a hazel branch4 ,the crest is enclosed in an oval belt inscribed with the motto1 8virtutis prmium honor40 ,this plate is in a copy of bookplate in the volumes of the first work which ,i ever bought4 ,don ,esteban was the title1 and the date #ahbe4 ,i was thirteen years old1 and bought this in an auction in ,mr4 ,a4 ,h4 ,beesley's1 ,house ,class-room1 in that fine old home of the ,seymours1 then and now a part of ,marlborough ,college4 ,the ex libris is a simple name1 crest1 and motto3 8,champion10 a family belonging to head1 and the bird seems very properly to be about to devour a plum4 ,the crest is framed by two branches1 presumably of plum trees4 ,,chapter ,,ix ,,modern ,,bookplates ,remarks on examples given in ,the ,studio1 special winter number1 #ahih-i4 ,modern bookplates are not easy to discuss satisfactorily4 ,the following are some of the plates which were named or illustrated in ,the ,studio special winter number1 #ahih-i1 which went out of print at once4 ,mr4 ,gleeson ,white1 who was by no means blind to the failings of up-to-date ex libris1 wrote this1 and gave with it the large number of one hundred and forty-nine illustrations4 ,on page #c is given the ex libris1 8,t4 ,edmund ,harvey10 a gruesome jumble of sticks and bones4 ,this plate is by ,cyril ,goldie4 ,in any comments now written no injurious reflections are intended2 as1 for one thing1 it is impracticable1 and probably undesirable1 to know whether1 and in what proportions1 owner1 artist1 or manufacturer1 are responsible4 ,besides these three1 there is a fourth and oft-predominating partner to be considered1 namely1 fashion4 ,probably the only value of the impressions here written is that they are formed by one who is an entirely independent critic and a true lover of beautiful ex libris4 ,the phrases of professionals will not therefore be expected4 ,on page #d is given the ex libris 8,eduard ,john ,margetson10 by ,w4 ,h4 ,margetson4 ,this plate seems simple and pleasing enough4 ,on the other hand1 it is not exhilarating to find in this evidently very fair sample volume no less than twenty-seven bookplates1 each depicting a female and a book4 ,on page #e the ex libris 8,richard ,trappes ,lomax10 by ,paul ,woodroffe1 is very refreshing to look upon4 ,it has all the familiar points of a bookplate1 in that it is armorial1 with mantling1 and flowery foliage4 ,at the same time the plate is not common1 crowded1 or eccentric4 ,now1 on the other hand1 turn to page #g1 where is a plate 8,from among the books of ,fred4 ,w4 ,brown40 ,in this there is doubtless some good work1 but in looking at the plate the eye and brain at once feel tired and bewildered2 you seem to long to turn from a crowded hotch-potch1 if only1 it might be1 to stare for a while at a blank barn door4 ,on page #i are three plates by ,w4 ,r4 ,weyer4 ,these are distinctly good to look at2 there seems a wholesome taste about them2 there is plenty of decoration1 without any attempt to crowd a volume of emblems and a market-gardener's flower-show into two inches by one and a half4 ,in each the owner's name is clearly given1 and1 of course1 no bookplate ought to want this4 ,in addition1 two are dated--that of ,richard ,chapman1 #ahib1 and ,reginald ,balfour's1 #ahih4 ,on page #ab is a distinctly satisfactory modern plate4 ,it is a portrait-plate1 and is by ,j4 ,w4 ,simpson1 for himself4 ,he has depicted himself enjoying a long clay pipe4 ,beneath is the simple record in the plainest of letters3 8,j4 ,w4 ,simpson ,his ,book40 ,on page #ad are the presumably portrait-plates of 8,mary ,a4 ,bridger0 and 8,julia ,eustace10 both by ,m4 ,e4 ,thompson4 ,these may be pretty1 but seem1 as in so many modern bookplates1 to lack simplicity4 ,on the next page is a portrait-plate1 8,edith ,e4 ,waterlow10 by ,j4 ,walter ,west4 ,this1 although the portrait is only a face in an oval1 and outside the constant florist's paraphernalia1 still the plate has some saving simplicity4 ,on page #af is what seems a sensible bookplate4 ,it is by ,e4 ,h4 ,new1 for ,edward ,morton1 and seems to give simply a view of ,edward ,morton's home1 a modern house built in old style1 and named ,kingsclere4 ,on page #dh is shown a plate to which we would gladly give the palm for ugliness4 ,we suppose it is meant for a bookplate1 as it is given in this volume1 and the words ex libris are distinguishable through the gloom4 ,on page #di is a plate1 ,aubrey ,beardsley1 inscribed ex libris 8,olive ,custance40 ,it is not much to be admired4 ,on pages #ej and #ea1 where we are among the ,french ex libris1 may be seen at one glance some half-dozen plates1 which all happen to illustrate what is a marked eyesore in many bookplates1 but has not been seriously noticed4 ,a bookplate is naturally designed for use in a book4 ,now1 with books should always be associated the idea of something to be valued and taken care of4 ,how does this agree with the plates here shown8 ,i think that symbolism should avoid this disturbing element4 ,there is water to drown the precious volumes1 and there are beasts to devour them4 ,in one a poor disconsolate-looking tome is shown trying to float on the dark cold waters of the deep1 and as if that were not a sufficiently uncomfortable position for a book1 a bird seems to be flying down1 with open beak1 to have a peck at it4 ,in another cheerful composition1 an angry tiger is in charge of the library of precious volumes1 and has the talons of one paw on a beautiful binding1 while it sticks the talons of its other paw into the leaves of an open volume4 ,in a third plate1 a wolf is in a library1 and1 of course1 behaving there as a wolf would4 ,in yet another plate1 a wolf is playing with a fine folio1 and forming altogether as incongruous a picture as a bull in a china shop4 ,on page #ed is reproduced a plate1 by ,lon ,lebgue4 ,this may be1 in disguise1 a lovely creation of modern art2 but the ordinary observer would take it to be a muddled map of everything or nothing1 and would not paste it inside the cover of any book he or she hoped ever to open again4 ,as another painful instance of bookplates exhibiting books in the very last position anyone would care to see them in1 on page #ef1 is shown a book being drowned in a pond4 ,this is by ,bracquemond4 ,from page #eh to page #fj some ,american ex libris are pourtrayed4 ,among these generally there is1 as should be where books are thought of1 a feeling of rest and refinement4 ,between pages #fa and #fh are given a number of plates of modern ,german ex libris1 thanks1 as we are reminded1 to the inspiriting influence of ,warnecke1 ,leiningen-,westerburg1 ,doepler1 and ,hildebrandt4 ,germany1 and to some extent ,austria1 too1 have produced some very original and interesting bookplates within the last few years4 ,illustrated on pages #fa and #fe are two plates which should surely come under the category of the error of associating books with incongruous surroundings4 ,in the one1 by ,doepler for the ,bibliothek des ,koeniglichen ,kunstgewerbe ,museums1 ,berlin1 the centre represents an open book--that would be well enough2 but the leading feature of the plate is a great1 rough1 brawny hand holding a big hammer and pressing on the open volume4 ,in the plate on page #fe1 by ,sattler1 the design pictures a human skeleton bearing a pile of books4 ,between pages #fd and #fe is a leaf bearing three pleasing plates1 by ,paul ,voigt4 ,one of the three is apparently for his own books4 ,it depicts a room with1 of course1 some very old books1 and the most prominent is in a position which would break the back of a modern book2 but not much fault need be found4 ,in those good times books were not bound in a day or for a day4 ,the hides were well chosen1 well seasoned1 and good workmanship was put into the binding4 ,facing ,paul ,voigt's own plate is a good plate by him for ,w4 ,l4 ,busse4 ,this has a fine smell of the sea about it4 ,tossing in the frothy deep is an ancient ship1 which but for masts and sails might be a nautilus shell4 ,below is a rugged anchor1 and around all a stout cable serves to frame a pleasing picture4 ,on page #fh is a cleverly designed plate by ,joseph ,sattler4 ,there is an altogether pleasing absence of misty1 mystic1 mythological allusions and complications4 ,on the other hand1 an hour-glass indicates the sands of time1 and the simple word 8,jetzt0 7now7 points a simple moral1 irresistibly apt for the book-lover4 ,there is no pursuit of which it can be more truly said--that he 7the book-collector7 who hesitates is lost4 ,,chapter ,x ,,various ,,british ,,bookplates ,the proper place for a bookplate is in a book--,gordon of bookplates1 none of them very early2 but they are referred to here1 as1 after all1 this book must chiefly appeal to readers in our own tongue4 ,if in this and other parts of this book the writer be thought to mention too much of books and owners1 it must be borne in mind that to the writer a bookplate is first of interest as connected with a book1 and a book is of interest for its subject and its owner's identity4 ,gordon of ,buthlaw4 ,in the ,general ,armoury ,gordon of ,lessmoir1 ,aberdeenshire1 is described as descended from ,william1 second son of ,john ,gordon of ,scudargue1 ,baronet1 first married ,spencer ,perceval and his wife lived in lodgings in ,bedford ,row2 but in about #agic they bought a good house in ,lincoln's ,inn ,fields1 and it is just a little curious that ,i bought this book1 with his bookplate in it1 but a few yards from ,lincoln's ,inn ,fields close on thirty years ago4 ,spencer ,perceval1 ,england's ,prime ,minister during the ,peninsuula ,war1 was shot dead ,mr4 ,procter1 at the ,british ,museum1 soon read the riddle4 ,he made it an ,earl of ,guildford1 and then it was very easy sailing for me to come to anchor at ,frederick ,north1 fifth ,earl of throughout life maintained his familiarity with the classics unimpaired40 ,the next surname we come to in bookplates has been most familiar to the present and immediate past generation1 in the person of ,samuel ,wilberforce1 ,bishop of ,oxford4 ,these few following remarks are from private recollections4 ,in the power of getting through a day of hard labour1 of mind and body1 he was unequalled1 and to the end of the hard day's work1 with similar laborious days preceding and following1 he could display a marvellously ready wit4 ,one evening at a dinner-party at ,cuddesdon ,palace1 the two lady guests on each side of the ,bishop were suddenly startled by the crashing fall of a pile of plates4 ,the ,bishop1 utterly unmoved1 instantly remarked1 8,oh1 it's nothing2 it's only the coachman going out with the brake40 ,it was the coachman1 and the brake was the vehicle in frequent use4 ,he would do some hours' work no doubt after his guests had retired1 and do some good work before breakfast the next morning4 ,at ,bisham ,abbey1 meeting at dinner two irrepressible spinsters who would argue of ages1 he drily remarked1 as if addressing the moon1 the extraordinary fact in nature1 ,hull1 on the #bdth ,august1 #agei1 and came of a family settled at ,wilberfoss1 eight miles from ,york1 for many centuries4 ,the election which this volume above-named commemorates was very remarkable4 ,wilberforce had a few months earlier had the satisfaction of seeing his ,bill for the abolition of the slave trade finally passed into law4 ,lord ,milton and ,mr4 ,lascelles1 who had been ,wilberforce's colleagues from #agif to #ahjf1 opposed him4 ,a subscription of #fd1dee was voluntarily raised to pay his expenses4 ,at the end of fifteen days he had scored #aa1hjf votes against his opponents' #aa1agg and #aj1ihi4 ,the story of ,miss ,wilberforce recognised driving through ,york at election time is too redolent of ,wilberforce's ready humour and ,yorkshire heartiness to be forgotten4 ,the crowd welcomed her with the cry3 8,miss ,wilberforce for ever60 ,she rejoined3 8,not ,miss ,wilberforce for ever1 thank you60 ,a fine plate is the circular armorial ex libris of ,compton1 the second ,earl of ,northampton1 risked and gave all for his sovereign's cause4 ,on ,march #aith1 #afdc1 he marched his men out of ,stafford and fought the ,parliament forces on ,hopton ,heath4 ,although he had so few troops he routed the enemy's cavalry and took from them eight guns2 but their infantry stood firm1 and finally he was himself killed1 proudly refusing to surrender to base rogues and rebels4 ,he left three sons to nobly emulate1 as brave cavaliers1 their father's loyalty and valour4 ,the second of them was at ,edgehill and ,hopton ,heath2 and later1 after engaging and inquiries in the county of ,york1 which belongs to ,mr4 ,e4 ,f4 ,coates1 and is probably one of the ,dodsworth volumes1 which posterity owes to the thoughtfulness of the great ,lord ,fairfax1 who1 when war was raging and devastation threatening1 had copies made of many old manuscripts for fear that the originals might be lost4 ,it always adds to the interest when there is the owner's signature to his own bookplate4 ,this is the case with a volume of a small topographical work4 ,the bookplate represents the arms and crest of the famous clan ,macintosh1 with 8,c4 ,c4 ,m40 below1 probably not where his head ought to be1 if told that ,american readers formed1 in a marked degree1 a very large class to whom publishers and authors should look for sympathy and encouragement4 ,that is all changed now1 and there is probably no country in the world where books1 and all that is implied in that magic word1 arouse so keen an interest4 ,it will not be out of place to pause and think of the honoured names of a few of those who have helped to prepare the road for this change4 ,of course1 some seeds of good fruit were sown many generations before4 ,passing over ,sir ,walter ,raleigh1 colonist and author1 we reach1 in a few years1 ,george ,sandys1 poet and colonist1 one of the brave companions of ,captain ,john ,smith4 ,john ,smith was a member of the council of the #aje emigrants who on ,december #aith1 #afjf1 set out from ,blackwall to found a colony in ,virginia4 ,combining prudence with intrepid enterprise1 he became the trusted founder and leader of the colony4 ,in one of them in a shorthand40 ,many will recall at once1 how often working as a reporter1 has led to a literary career4 ,in this connection the name of ,charles ,dickens1 and a host of other authors1 occur at once4 ,in #afbf ,roger ,williams took his ,b4,a4 degree from ,pembroke ,college1 ,cambridge2 and on ,december #ast1 #afcj1 he embarked from ,bristol in a ship named the ,lyon1 and after a voyage of over two months1 reached ,nantasket ,february #eth1 #afca4 ,he had been ordained in ,england2 but neither in the old country nor the new did his ideas of a ,church and ,church government generally agree with the views of those in authority4 ,in ,january1 #afcf1 he was cited by ,boston1 but declining to appear1 ,captain ,john ,underhill was despatched to ,salem with a sloop to arrest him and put him aboard ship for ,england4 ,receiving a hint from ,winthrop 8to arise and flee into the ,narrohiganset's country1 free from ,english ,pattents10 with a few companions he 8steered his course for the on ,august #bfth1 #afbi1 to the document which practically made ,massachusetts self-governing4 ,those who signed undertook to set sail with their families to inhabit and continue in ,new ,england1 provided that the whole government1 together with the patent for the plantation1 be first by an order of court legally transferred and established1 to remain with us and others which shall inhabit upon the said plantation4 ,shortly ,john ,winthrop was elected to be governor1 and in ,march of the next year sailed from ,england4 ,his literary character was in evidence even throughout the voyage1 as the famous diary was then begun1 and also in his journey across the seas he wrote a little manual1 the manuscript of which now belongs to the ,new ,york ,historical ,society1 and is called ,christian ,charitie4 ,a ,modell hereof4 ,now we come to talk of a man who is perhaps the most interesting figure in early ,american authorship4 ,john ,eliot1 the ,indian apostle1 born in ,herefordshire in #afjd1 took his degree at ,cambridge in #afbb1 and afterwards entered ,holy ,orders4 ,he landed at ,boston1 ,new ,england1 in #afca4 ,on ,november #eth1 #afcb1 he was made a 8teacher of the ,church at ,roxbury1 and held this post until his death at ,roxbury on ,may #bjth1 #afij40 ,in the meanwhile1 between #afcb and #afij1 ,john ,eliot had1 amongst other vast labours1 translated the whole ,bible into native ,indian2 but to be more precise3 ,first came the ,new ,testament in #affa1 and a second edition in #afhj4 ,in #affc the whole ,bible1 first edition1 and in #afhe the second edition4 ,these wonderful works were published at ,cambridge1 in ,new ,england4 ,he also helped in the preparation of the ,english ,metrical version of the ,psalms1 the first book printed in ,new ,england4 ,this was known as the ,bay ,psalm-book1 and was printed by ,stephen ,daye in #afdj4 ,everett declared of him3 8,since the death of the ,apostle ,paul1 a nobler1 truer1 and warmer spirit than ,john ,eliot never lived40 ,again1 ,mather wrote of him3 8,he that would write of ,eliot1 must write of ,charity1 or say nothing40 ,richard ,baxter1 another contemporary1 recorded3 8,there was no man on earth whom ,i honour'd above him40 ,the credit for the first really original work published in ,america seems to belong to ,anne ,bradstreet1 whose maiden name was ,anne ,dudley1 her father1 ,thomas ,dudley1 becoming ,governor of ,massachusetts4 ,she was born in ,northamptonshire1 and at the early age of sixteen married ,simon ,bradstreet1 and in #afcj went with him to ,america4 ,her husband became ,governor of ,massachusetts in #afhj4 ,mrs4 ,anne ,bradstreet's poems were first published in #afdj1 under the title of 8,several ,poems1 compiled with great variety of ,wit and ,learning1 full of delight2 wherein especially is contained a compleat ,discourse and ,description of the ,four ,elements1 ,constitutions1 ,ages of ,man1 and ,seasons of the ,year1 together with an exact ,epitome of the ,three first ,monarchies1 viz3 ,the ,assyrian1 ,persian1 and ,grecian2 and the beginning of the ,roman ,commonwealth to the end of their last ,king1 with divers other pleasant and serious ,poems3 by a ,gentlewoman of ,new ,england40 ,this is not a treatise on history1 and we must pass on to later days1 and soon find firm ground with ,american-born literary men and women4 ,jonathan ,edwards1 born at ,windsor1 in ,connecticut1 became a student at ,yale ,college in #agaf4 ,already1 at thirteen years old1 he was reading ,locke on ,the ,human ,understanding1 8with a keener delight than a miser feels when gathering up handfulls of silver and gold from some newly-discovered treasure40 ,the greatest of his many writings was 8,a careful and ,strict ,inquiry into the modern prevailing notion that ,freedom of ,will is supposed to be essential to ,moral ,agency10 and this work has been described as undoubtedly the great bulwark of ,calvinistic theology4 ,edwards' father had been fifty years minister of a church in ,america1 and his ancestors first emigrated from ,england in ,queen ,elizabeth's days2 but the origin of ,benjamin ,franklin1 to whom we come now1 was much humbler4 ,his father1 ,josiah ,franklin1 came from ,england1 and started in ,boston as a tallow chandler4 ,benjamin ,franklin was born on ,january #agth1 #agjf1 and when ten years old his father took him home from school to cut wicks for the candles6 ,the boy became anxious for the life of a sailor2 but the father1 with what now1 looking back1 we may call happy instinct1 apprenticed ,benjamin to his elder brother1 ,james1 who1 just returned from a voyage to ,london1 had1 in #agag1 set up a printing-press in ,boston4 ,this change brought ,benjamin at once within reach of reading1 and as what is here written relates wholly to books1 the following words of ,benjamin ,franklin1 written to a son of ,cotton ,mather in his later years1 are worth repeating3 8,when ,i was a boy1 ,i met a book entitled ,essays to do ,good1 which ,i think was written by your father4 ,it had been so little regarded by its former possessor that several leaves of it were torn out1 but the remainder gave me such a turn of thinking as to have an influence upon my conduct through life2 for ,i have always set a greater value on the character of a doer of good than any other kind of reputation3 and if ,i have been1 as you seem to think1 a useful citizen1 the public owes all the advantage of it to that book40 ,in #agbd1 with aid from ,sir ,william ,keith1 ,governor of ,pennsylvania1 ,benjamin ,franklin came to ,england with the object of obtaining and bringing over a printing-press and all materials for himself2 but not succeeding in this1 he stayed two years in ,london1 working at his trade1 and at this time1 #agbe1 he published ,a ,dissertation on ,liberty and ,necessity1 ,pleasure and ,pain4 ,this publication is not in any old collection of ,franklin's writings1 and even now only one copy seems to be known4 ,in #agcj ,benjamin founded the ,public ,library in ,philadelphia4 ,in #agec he became ,postmaster-,general for ,british ,america4 ,in #agdc he had originated the ,american ,philosophical ,society1 and in #agdi he became the real founder of the ,university of ,pennsylvania4 ,the year #ageb saw the verification of his theory identifying lightning with electricity4 ,after the ,declaration of ,independence ,franklin was1 in #aggf1 appointed ,minister ,plenipotentiary to ,france4 ,in #aghe he became ,president of the ,commonwealth of ,pennsylvania1 and in #aghg sat with ,washington and ,hamilton in the ,federal ,convention which framed the ,constitution of the ,united ,states4 ,on his death1 on ,april #agth1 #agij1 ,mirabeau announced in the ,general ,assembly of ,france3 8,the genius which had freed ,america1 and poured a flood of light over ,europe1 had returned to the bosom of the ,divinity40 ,nicolas ,trbner1 in the interesting ,introduction to his ,guide to ,american ,literature1 ,london1 #ahei1 points out that until #agic no ,american devoted himself exclusively to literature as a profession4 ,in this year ,charles ,brockden ,brown's first novel appeared4 ,the title of this was ,wieland2 or1 the ,transformation4 ,the author was born in ,philadelphia in #agga4 ,the great historian ,william ,hickling ,prescott1 whose grandfather1 ,colonel ,william ,prescott1 commanded at ,bunker's ,hill1 was born at ,salem1 in ,massachusetts1 in #agif4 ,in #ahad he graduated from ,harvard with honours1 although in #ahaa1 his first year at ,harvard1 he had lost the sight of one eye1 and shortly afterwards the other eye was seriously affected in sympathy with it4 ,this unfortunate accident was caused by a blow from a crust of bread thrown at random at a college dinner4 ,the years from #ahae to #ahag he spent in ,england1 8delighting not the less in the charms of nature because by him they could be seen only0 as through a glass1 darkly4 ,he returned1 resolved 8that the ample page of knowledge1 rich with the spoils of time10 if obscured to his external organs1 should be no stranger to his intellectual vision4 ,in #ahcg his first great work1 ,the ,history of ,ferdinand and ,isabella1 was finished4 ,with inborn modesty he did not mean it to be published2 but his father1 ,judge ,william ,prescott1 of course insisted on its publication1 and soon it was published1 not only in the author's own tongue1 but in ,germany1 ,france1 ,spain1 and ,italy1 in the respective languages of those lands4 ,in #ahdc appeared ,the ,history of the ,conquest of ,mexico1 and in #ahdg his ,history of the ,conquest of ,peru4 ,next came the first volumes of the great work which ,prescott was never destined to finish4 ,in #ahee were published the two first volumes of ,the ,history of the ,reign of ,philip the ,second1 ,king of ,spain1 and in ,december1 #aheh1 appeared the third volume4 ,early in the year he had been attacked by a slight stroke of paralysis4 ,early in the next year this was followed by a second1 and he passed away on ,january #bhth1 #ahei4 ,in a conversation only forty-eight hours before his death he spoke of various friends1 and particularly of ,george ,ticknor1 whom he described as 8having shortened and brightened what1 but for him1 must have been many a sad and weary hour40 ,asked if he was not coming to ,new ,york1 he said3 8,no2 ,i suppose that the days of my long journeys are over4 ,i must content myself1 like ,horace1 with my three houses4 ,you know ,i go at the commencement of summer to my cottage by the seaside at ,lynn ,beach2 and at autumn to my patrimonial acres at ,pepperell1 which have been in our family for two hundred years1 to sit under the old trees ,i sat under when a boy2 and then with winter come down to hibernate in this house4 ,this is the only travelling1 ,i suppose1 that ,i shall do until ,i go to my long home40 ,george ,ticknor1 to whom the dying historian ,prescott made such interesting allusion1 was born at ,boston1 ,massachusetts1 on ,august #ast1 #agia1 and from early childhood displayed a passion for books4 ,he became a barrister1 but could not long keep away from literature and learning4 ,in #ahae he came to ,europe1 and haunted some of the best libraries and universities of the ,old ,world4 ,actually1 before his return home to ,america1 he was1 in #ahag1 appointed ,smith ,professor of ,modern ,languages and ,literature in ,harvard ,college4 ,in #ahai he returned to ,america1 and for fifteen years held this chair of teaching1 delivering all the while the most valuable courses of lectures4 ,in #ahce he gave up his professorship in order to go again to ,europe and study for preparing his great book4 ,after three years he came back to his native land1 and1 in #ahdi1 ,the ,history of ,spanish ,literature was first published in ,new ,york by ,harper and ,brothers1 in ,london by ,john ,murray4 ,of it ,washington ,irving wrote to the author3 8,no one that has not been in ,spain can feel half the merit of your work1 but to those who have it is a perpetual banquet4 ,it is well worth a lifetime to achieve such a work40 ,washington ,irving1 almost the first author noticed as a native of the city of ,new ,york1 was born on ,april #crd1 #aghc4 ,his father was a ,scot1 and his mother ,english4 ,passing over interesting publications like ,salmagundi2 or1 ,the ,whim-,whams1 and ,diedrich ,knickerbocker's ,history of ,new ,york1 we come to ,the ,sketch ,book1 first issued in #ahai4 ,curiously enough1 ,washington ,irving1 as a fact1 wrote the ,,ms4 for this in ,england2 but it was at first only printed and published in ,new ,york4 ,incidentally1 ,lockhart1 in ,blackwood's ,magazine1 ,february1 #ahbj1 paid a high compliment3-- 8,we are greatly at a loss to comprehend for what reason ,mr4 ,irving has thought fit to publish his ,sketch ,book in ,america earlier than in ,britain2 but1 at all events1 he is doing himself great injustice by not having an edition printed here of every number after it has appeared in ,new ,york4 ,nothing has been written for a long time for which it would be more safe to promise great and eager acceptance40 ,washington ,irving's fame was now secure1 and these few concluding words1 from ,allibone1 must suffice3 8,when ,bracebridge ,hall was ready for the press1 in #ahbb1 ,mr4 ,murray was ready to offer #a1jjj guineas for the copyright without having seen the ,,ms4 ,he obtained the coveted prize at his offer1 and subsequently gave the same author #b1jjj for the chronicle of ,the ,conquest of ,granada1 and #c1jjj guineas for the ,history of the ,life and ,voyages of ,christopher ,columbus40 ,very few words here must be written of ,john ,lothrop ,motley1 born in ,massachusetts in #ahad4 ,it is enough to mention his splendid work1 ,the ,history of the ,rise of the ,dutch ,republic4 ,now1 from what is gone before1 it will readily be granted that ,america was well prepared1 by the work of her own sons1 to take a proud position in ,literature1 and in concluding these introductory remarks only one honoured name shall be mentioned further4 ,henry ,wadsworth ,longfellow was born in ,portland1 ,maine1 on ,february #bgth1 #ahjg1 and was descended from ,william ,longfellow1 who1 born in ,hampshire1 ,england1 in #afea1 emigrated to ,massachusetts4 ,the chief incidents of the life of ,henry ,wadsworth ,longfellow are like household words1 and to think of all that is pure and noble in ,america without naming him1 is impossible4 ,all his writings are instinct with the breath of a pure and noble life4 8,softly the ,angelus sounded1 and over the roofs of the village ,columns of pale blue smoke1 like clouds of incense ascending1 ,rose from a hundred hearths1 the homes of peace and contentment4 ,thus dwelt together in love those simple ,acadian farmers1-- ,dwelt in the love of ,god and of man4 ,alike were they free from ,fear1 that reigns with the tyrant1 and envy1 the vice of republics4 ,neither locks had they to their doors1 nor bars to their windows2 ,but their dwellings were open as day and the hearts of the owners2 ,there the richest was poor1 and the poorest lived in abundance40 ,naturally we turn1 at first1 to look at books taken to ,america by early ,english and ,dutch settlers4 ,they and their near descendants1 when using a bookplate at all1 mostly adopted an armorial plate4 ,copper-plate engraving was1 of course1 in vogue then1 and most of their ex libris are from copper-plates4 ,there are a few from wood-blocks4 ,of comparatively late plates1 some are steel plates2 but the copper are usually the more satisfactory2 the steel being so difficult to work4 ,in comparing a number of the earlier specimens of bookplates in ,america an interesting point involuntarily arises4 ,from which of two views is an ex libris the more interesting8 ,is it a work of art or a piece of history8 ,in spite of all that skilled designers and cunning workers in metals may say1 the majority will probably value most what for want of a better name may be called the historical aspect4 ,when the ,tudor1 ,stuart1 and ,guelph ,exhibitions were held in ,london1 somewhat unfortunately so many of the expert critics1 in writing of portraits1 groups1 or historical scenes1 seemed only able to write from a pure art point of view4 ,as an instance1 not connected with any exhibition1 ,i had1 but am afraid that ,i have lost it1 a somewhat seedy-looking oil painting1 perhaps #ah #ab inches1 which depicted an earnest1 bent old figure on horseback returning the salute of a wonder-struck old countryman and his good dame4 ,following the keen old horseman is another horse1 bearing the groom with despatch-bag4 ,the scene is1 in fact1 a contemporary representation from life of 8,the ,duke0 just before passing out of ,birdcage ,walk for ,apsley ,house4 ,in the left background is the ,wellington ,monument1 as many of us remember it1 and on the right the ,hercules statue4 ,these accessories fix the date as in the last few years of the great ,duke's life4 ,what thousand-guinea portrait1 plastered with elaborate uniform and robes and saturated with a learned artist's technical postures and perfections1 could have so perfectly pourtrayed the most interesting figure ever seen in ,london half a century ago8 ,field-,marshal ,moltke was respected throughout ,germany as ,der ,schweiger--the ,silent4 ,wellington1 too1 and the late ,lord ,salisbury as well1 did not revel in long-winded talk4 ,once1 in the ,duke's last years1 he had become very unpopular with the ignorant crowd4 ,stepping out of the ,house of ,lords into ,old ,palace ,yard1 he was met by the howls and threats of an angry mob4 ,his groom was there with the aged ,duke's horse for him to ride home as usual4 ,by a sign1 sending away horse and groom1 the calm old veteran walked into and with the mob4 ,before he and they came to ,apsley ,house1 the wild threats and jeers had become good ,british cheers4 ,the old man spoke no single word1 but only pointed to his study windows1 which had lately been barred up owing to a mob breaking the glass4 ,i bought this painting from ,charles ,dickens' friend1 old ,mrs4 ,haines1 as it hung in her inner parlour or sanctum4 ,i also bought from the old lady an old crockery clock-case1 depicting the young ,pretender and ,flora ,mac,donald2 also a separate figure of ,flora ,mac,donald4 ,the old dame talked the while of her recollections of uninteresting 767 folk1 such as ,lord ,byron and ,charles ,dickens4 ,to hear her talk of her own father1 a ,thames waterman1 landing ,byron at the ,tower stairs1 carried one in fancy almost back to ,wenceslaus ,hollar's ,london1 with its picturesque quaintness4 ,describing ,dickens' appearance when first he came to ,london1 she spoke of him as having somewhat the look of a groom4 ,then she pointed with pride to the plain chair in which ,dickens1 in later years1 spent many an hour of many a day reading her husband's library books4 ,this house1 ,no4 #bd1 ,fetter ,lane1 has long been pulled down1 and the foregoing remarks are from my memory of my last call there about nineteen years ago4 ,in an article shortly afterwards 7#eth ,january1 #ahhd7 in the ,pall ,mall ,gazette--,i have just looked it up in one of my commonplace books--are many curious particulars1 and two good illustrations3 8,the walls are lined all round with books that have long been forgotten by the world1 all arranged with some attention to regularity4 ,a little angular counter protects them from the profane touch of curio-hunters4 ,this is covered with old books1 prints1 tarnished silver1 glass cases1 tattered engravings1 and paintings cracked and stained4 ,in one corner ,dame ,haines sat down4 #8,here1' she said1 #8,i have seen ,dickens sit many hundreds of times1 and here he used to lean his shoulder on the counter4 ,ah6' she went on1 making a movement with her hands1 and with ecstasy expressed on every one of her wrinkled features1 #8,i can see him now1 with his pleasant face1 his quiet1 rippling laugh and his gentle ways40 ,now1 the earlier bookplates hailing from the more northern colonies of ,america differ generally from those of southern colonies4 ,most of the early northern families were of stern1 unimaginative mettle1 rather despising as unholy anything so 8worldly0 as an ex libris1 and bringing few such gewgaws with them in their trunks4 ,on the other hand1 what bookplates they in time adopted were home-made1 and if not fine works of art1 they were of essential interest as a bit of history4 ,the southern colonies1 on the other hand1 were frequented by a more polished and wealthy class1 bringing along with them the trappings and social trinkets of their old society4 ,mr4 ,e4 ,n4 ,hewins1 in his extremely valuable treatise on ,american bookplates1 gives the book-label of the ,rev4 ,john ,williams1 dated #afgi1 as the earliest dated example4 ,this is particularly interesting1 as the said ,john ,williams was a native4 ,he was born at ,roxbury1 in ,massachusetts1 his grandfather having settled there in about the year #afch4 ,john ,williams graduated at ,harvard in #afhc1 was ordained in #afhh1 and became the first pastor of ,deerfield1 a frontier town4 ,on the night of ,february #bhth1 #agjd1 ,deerfield was attacked by about #cjj ,french and ,indians4 ,a great number of citizens were captured2 two of ,john ,williams' children and a negro servant were killed2 and then he1 with his wife and remaining children1 were forced to march for ,canada4 ,on the second day out1 his wife1 falling exhausted1 was at once slain with a tomahawk4 ,urged on1 they marched #cjj miles to their destination4 ,after a long while ,john ,williams was ransomed1 and came back to his faithful charge of ,deerfield in #agjf4 ,one daughter1 ,eunice1 was still kept a captive1 and her after history was very remarkable4 ,she was only a child of eight when captured2 but in time she forgot the ,english language1 became a ,roman ,catholic1 and married an ,indian4 ,she lived to a great age1 and several times visited her relations1 but refused to give up any of the habits or dress of ,indian life4 ,another early native-wrought label ex libris is that dated #agjd for the books of ,thomas ,prince4 ,he1 too1 was of an old stock1 his grandfather having emigrated from ,hull in #afcc4 ,thomas ,prince became pastor of the ,old ,south ,church in ,boston4 ,a fine scholar and linguist1 he made valuable collections1 both manuscript and in print4 ,some of these stored in the tower of the ,old ,south ,church1 of great interest for the early history of ,america1 were unfortunately destroyed by the ,british forces in #agge4 ,now we find a bookplate known to have been engraved on copper by a native engraver4 ,nathaniel ,hurd1 whose grandfather1 emigrating from ,england1 settled in ,charlestown1 ,massachusetts1 was probably the first ,american who engraved copper-plates4 ,his best designs had humour and character4 ,one of his well-known plates represents ,hudson1 the forger1 in the pillory4 ,he engraved a seal for ,harvard ,university4 ,hurd was born in #agcj1 and only lived to #aggg4 ,hewins gives ,hurd's plate of ,thomas ,dering1 #agdi1 as the first ,american plate by an ,american engraver which is both signed and dated4 ,much interest among bookplate collectors has1 of course1 centred round the plate of ,george ,washington1 both on account of its being ,george ,washington's1 and being rare4 ,it is a good armorial ,chippendale plate4 ,learned inquirers have failed to establish who engraved it1 and on which side of the broad ,atlantic6 ,the plate of the next worthy to be named is a fine armorial ex libris with the motto3 8nec elatus nec dejectus40 ,the owner of this plate was ,isaiah ,thomas1 born in ,boston in #agdi1 and dying at ,worcester1 also in ,massachusetts1 in #ahca2 he was1 at six years old1 apprenticed to ,zachariah ,fowler1 ballad printer4 ,in #aggj ,thomas became partner with his former master4 ,together they issued the ,massachusetts ,spy1 8open to all parties1 but influenced by none40 ,thomas was soon left alone in his undertakings4 ,a few days before the battle of ,lexington1 in which he bore his part1 he packed up his press and types1 and took them by night to ,worcester4 ,there he resumed the issue of the ,spy1 which1 at all events in #ahhh1 was still being regularly issued4 ,in #aghf he got from ,europe the first fount of music ever used in ,new ,england4 ,in #aghh he opened a book store in ,boston4 ,in #agia he issued the ,bible in folio4 ,he gave his own fine collection of books1 amounting to #h1jjj volumes1 to the ,worcester ,antiquarian ,library4 ,of him ,william ,lincoln wrote2 8,his reputation will rest on manly independence1 which gave through the initiatory stage and progress of the ,revolution1 the strong influence of the press he directed1 towards the cause of freedom1 when royal flattery would have seduced1 and the power of government subdued1 its action40 ,the wreath and armorial bookplate of ,john ,quincy ,adams1 sixth ,president of the ,united ,states1 is almost more pleasing to behold than one could expect to have been chosen by one of the very sternest old ,puritans that ever breathed2 but1 after all1 ,john ,quincy ,adams was a scholar and man of affairs1 who from early boyhood had travelled much1 and in good company4 ,all this would give him some ideas of good taste4 8,j4 ,q4 ,a40 seems to lead involuntarily to the thought of another wreath and armorial bookplate of a not less interesting character4 ,the lawyer1 ,josiah ,quincy1 was born in #agdd1 in ,boston1 and died at sea in #agge2 but much happened in that short spell of years4 ,he was one of the first to say in plain terms1 8that an appeal to arms1 followed by a separation from the mother-country1 was inevitable40 ,early in #aggc1 when already suffering from consumption1 he took a voyage under doctor's orders2 but1 returning to ,boston1 he was present in the ,old ,south ,meeting-house on ,december #afth1 and as the men1 disguised as ,indians1 rushed past the door on their way to the tea-ships1 he exclaimed3 8,see the clouds which now rise thick and fast upon our horizon1 the thunders roll and the lightnings play1 and to that ,god who rides on the whirlwind and directs the storm1 ,i commit my country40 ,the plate1 with armorial shield and crest1 of ,dr4 ,john ,jeffries may be remembered1 though no draughtsman or engraver's name is tied to it1 as the bookplate of the man who1 in ,boston1 in #aghi1 delivered the first lecture on anatomy ever given in ,new ,england4 ,we may turn now from surgeons to a doctor of divinity4 ,the plate of ,samuel ,farmar ,jarvis1 ,d4,d41 here reproduced from my copy of ,bingley's ,voyagers--in which ,jarvis has written3 8,to my dear ,edrica ,faulkner a small token of regard from her affectionate ,illustration a pile of books1 and1 above1 the cross and crown are seen in a blaze of glory40 ,s4 ,f4 ,jarvis1 son of the bishop1 was born at ,middletown1 in ,connecticut1 in #aghf1 and from his tastes and scholarship his name is well worthy of record where books are concerned4 ,in #ahbf he sailed for ,england1 and spent nine years in literary study1 exploring many of the great libraries of ,europe4 ,the fruit of these labours may be seen in some valuable works afterwards published4 ,his fine collection of paintings and interesting library were sold after his death in #ahea4 ,leaving now the armorial plates1 and coming to a literary name which is almost as familiar a sound in ,london as in ,new ,york1 we find the bookplate of ,oliver ,wendell ,holmes1 a charming original design--a nautilus shell1 with the motto 8per ampliora ad altiora40 8,if you will look into ,roget's ,bridgewater ,treatise10 said the autocrat one morning1 8you will find a figure of one of these shells and a section of it4 ,the last will show you the series of enlarging compartments successively dwelt in by the animal that inhabits the shell1 which is built in a widening spiral40 8,build thee more stately mansions1 ,o my soul1 as the swift seasons roll6 ,leave thy low-vaulted past6 ,let each new temple nobler than the last1 ,shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast1 ,till thou at length art free1 ,leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea40 ,a very curious plate is that of ,laurence ,hutton1 the author4 ,the plate consists mainly of a full-length portrait of ,william ,makepeace ,thackeray1 with 8,laurence ,hutton0 inscribed under it6 ,the author of ,vanity ,fair stands in an arched doorway1 which leads to bookcases and books4 ,laurence ,hutton was born in the city of ,new ,york in #ahdc4 ,as a writer he is well known on both sides of the ocean1 and for twenty years he always spent the summer months in ,england4 ,turning from peace to war1 the bookplate of ,lieutenant ,e4 ,trenchard1 of the ,united ,states ,navy1 represents another side of life4 ,in this plate1 as1 happily1 in almost all bookplates of ,american origin1 the name is there clear and unmistakable4 ,behind the horizontal oval bearing the name1 are flags1 cannon1 cannon-balls1 and an anchor4 ,the owner of this plate was born in ,new ,jersey in #aghd1 and on ,april #cjth1 #ahjj1 he was appointed a midshipman in the ,united ,states ,navy1 and became lieutenant on ,february #ahth1 #ahjg4 ,in the war of #ahab to #ahae he commanded the ,madison in some of her engagements on ,lake ,ontario1 and also rendered distinguished service at the blockade of ,kingston4 ,these were stirring times1 and the following exact quotation from1 not improbably1 the only copy in existence of a tiny printed manual1 is pressed for a ,british man-of-war4 ,his father1 a clergyman1 founded1 in #agej1 at ,halifax1 the first ,presbyterian church in ,canada4 ,on the ,declaration of ,independence ,stephen ,cleveland was given a captain's commission1 and brought over from ,bordeaux valuable munitions of war4 ,his commission is said to have been the earliest issued by the ,american ,government4 ,of quite modern plates a good specimen is that of a well-known ,new ,york collector1 ,mr4 ,eduard ,hale ,bierstadt4 ,the style is allegorical2 a piping shepherd1 naked1 but for a sergeant's sash6 ,books and flowers1 with the motto3 8nunc mihi mox aliis40 ,a very pleasing1 particularly because unpretending1 plate is that of 8,melvin ,h4 ,hapgood4 ,hartford1 ,conn4 ,u4,s4,a40 ,it is but little more than a very finely ornamented label including a very small shield-of-arms4 8,thomas ,bailey ,aldrich ,his ,mark0 is the inscription on the frame bordering a rectangular modern bookplate4 ,inside is a bird over a mask1 and1 failing more serious emblems1 the idea of the bird as a young rook is not inappropriate to the familiar expression 8his mark40 ,a more pretentious plate1 and well illustrated by ,mr4 ,hewins1 is that of the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,joseph ,henry ,dubbs1 professor in ,franklin and ,marshall ,college4 ,in the middle is a shield-of-arms fastened in front of a spreading oak tree4 ,the several inscriptions of books1 and the old motto3 8,my silent but faithful friends are they40 ,albert ,c4 ,bates's bookplate reproduces an early woodcut of a ,leyden ,university old library1 with its chained books4 ,a beautiful plate1 mentioned by ,mr4 ,hewins1 is the coloured ex libris of ,gerald ,e4 ,hart1 of ,montreal1 representing the interior of a cell in some medieval monastery1 with a tonsured monk sitting on his stone bench1 illuminating a manuscript4 ,the ,gothic window admits light through its highly coloured design1 and rows of vellum lie beside the desk of the old monk4 ,leaving library interiors1 we note1 amongst scores of other good literary bookplates1 that of the ,rev4 ,wm4 ,r4 ,huntington1 ,rector of ,grace ,church1 ,new ,york ,city1 a design adapted from a frontispiece by ,walter ,crane for the ,fairy ,tales of the ,brothers ,grimm1 and in which a curly-locked youth is1 with a huge key in hand1 opening the door of a house4 ,upon the roof are seen two cupids1 making pleasant sounds with lyre and voice4 ,with this plate is the charming motto3 8,in veritate victoria40 ,many pleasing ,american ex libris are not personal at all4 ,the bookplate of the ,grolier ,club is in itself a beautiful object1 befitting a society which1 although only founded in ,new ,york less than twenty years ago1 occupies such a unique position in literary circles4 ,of a far different style is the allegorical plate inscribed3 8,this ,book belongs to the ,monthly ,library in ,farmington4 ,laws4 #a4 ,two pence per day for retaining a ,book more than one ,month4 #b4 ,one penny for folding down a the post of clerk of probate1 and for eight years was town treasurer4 ,he also worked as a goldsmith1 manufactured saltpetre for the army1 and conducted the church choir6 ,this interesting local bookplates some space devoted to the subject of inscriptions in books can hardly be out of place4 ,in the view of the real book-lover--and no others are asked to look at this volume--a book1 until actually destroyed1 is a very living reality4 ,as he takes it carefully into his hands he thinks of the wondrous thoughts and deeds that may be unfolded between its covers4 ,he also thinks1 if it be an old book1 of the host of scenes of other days through which the book has passed4 ,bookplates in it of former owners are of interest2 but so1 too1 in a very striking manner1 are any manuscript names in its original stamped binding1 with clasps4 ,now this short gossip on ex libris must draw to a close4 ,in one sense--that of variety--the study of bookplates can be elaborated in a never-ending course4 ,you can set your mind on collecting1 arranging1 and studying the bookplates of lawyers4 ,again1 you can limit that1 and collect only the bookplates of barristers1 as distinguished from solicitors2 you can limit your attention to judges2 you can confine it to a century1 a country1 or even a county2 you can strive to put together all the ,chippendale bookplates ever made2 you can strive to collect every portrait-plate1 every plate with a ship1 every landscape-plate1 every military bookplate1 or collect military bookplates1 at the same time excluding every aspirant below a general6 ,the varieties are endless2 it is merely a question of ringing the changes4 ,perhaps one of the most sensible divisions1 in a small way1 is that of collecting the plates of the various members of certain families4 ,memorable words were spoken in ,march1 #ahia1 by ,john ,leighton1 ,f4,s4,a41 the first chairman of the ,ex ,libris ,society3 8,the ,society should be select1 and in no way connected with profit1 other than the pleasure to be derived in making the past patent to the present and future40 ,the present writer is not a bookplate collector2 but an honoured member of the numbers had not1 till now1 made the acquaintance of a paper-knife4 ,there is1 ,i need hardly say1 much in the ,journal of interest1 and reflecting highly on the ingenuity of ,mr4 ,w4 ,h4 ,k4 ,wright1 fellow of the ,royal ,historical ,society4 ,in turning over the numbers of the ,journal a fond1 vain wish seizes one2 and it is this--,oh6 that ,i could strike out the trade journal element1 or relegate it to certain pages1 wholly apart from the interesting historical and antiquarian portions4 ,alas6 how could this be expected1 seeing that leading members of the ,society were professionally busied with bookplates8 ,perhaps this has all been remedied4 ,then1 too1 in turning over numbers one cannot help thinking that a bookplate of simple taste was sadly discouraged4 ,in the first place1 a 8fanciful0 design was directly recommended2 and in the second place1 by constantly urging that each member of the ,society must sport at least one bookplate of his own1 and must be ready to exchange4 ,thus anyone who has joined the ,society1 and whose own library may be limited to ,bradshaw and the ,stock ,exchange ,year ,book1 must start an ex libris1 not to place in the primary proper place for
