like character to those at ,hampton and ,carlisle8 ,already fair beginnings have been made4 ,as will be seen by a cut published herewith1 we have good grounds1 several attractive and suitable buildings1 with other improvements4 ,by an examination of a map with reference to the location of the different ,indian tribes1 it will be found that ,santee is accessible to seven tribes1 numbering over twenty thousand souls4 ,the railroad systems of the vicinity are such that no great difficulty or expense would be experienced in bringing students together4 ,the tribes speaking the ,dakota language number more than those speaking any other ,indian dialect on the continent4 ,the churches already established among them1 with a membership of #hdg1 are in full sympathy with the ,santee school4 ,no difficulty is likely to come from a lack of students1 as already the institution has during the present year been obliged to turn them away for want of room4 ,illustration3 ,,santee ,,normal ,,training ,,school4 ,mr4 ,thomas ,l4 ,riggs1 who collected a company of ,indian youth for ,gen4 ,armstrong's school last autumn1 reports that he could have secured several times as many1 if he had been seeking students for ,santee4 ,the variety of industries that it would be desirable to promote would be limited only by the wants of the people in a new country4 ,carpentering1 blacksmithing1 shoemaking1 broommaking and basketmaking1 are trades that well might receive early attention4 ,it would be no part of the plan to interfere with the religious or normal school work by the more general introduction of industrial training4 ,we believe that ,christian nurture is promoted rather than retarded by attention to industrial pursuits among students1 when wise oversight is given for the sake of useful achievements4 ,the plan of locating the students in cottages1 so that each home may have a quiet and healthful influence upon the untutored youth from wigwam life1 is already inaugurated1 and can be extended to meet all emergencies4 ,the land at the agency is controlled by the government1 but no difficulty is anticipated in securing all that may be needed for the use of the school4 ,scholarships may also be had in numbers and amount sufficient to warrant preparations on a large scale for a first grade normal and industrial institute4 ,it is the purpose of this ,association to weigh carefully the above considerations1 and if found practicable1 to develop at an early day a training school in ,nebraska that shall be equal in its facilities and enterprises to the demands of the new era in the progress of ,indian civilization4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,aspects ,,of ,,the ,,indian ,,problem4 ,,by ,,hon4 ,,carl ,,schurz4 ,the increased interest of public-spirited citizens in the education of ,indian children is one of the best1 if not the best result1 of recent discussions of the ,indian question4 ,the success of the schools at ,hampton1 in ,virginia1 ,carlisle1 in ,pennsylvania1 and ,forest ,grove1 in ,oregon1 have amply demonstrated what can be accomplished if such schools be organized on the right principle and conducted with ability and energy4 ,that this is more and more generally appreciated is all the more fortunate1 as the ,indian question is no longer one the solution of which can be trusted to time4 ,as the progress of settlement and enterprise in the far western regions1 or1 as it is called in a general way1 8the development of the country10 advances1 the old methods of providing for the ,indians become obsolete4 ,large reservations of wild land1 on which the ,indian can freely roam and support himself1 partly by hunting1 will soon be things of the past4 ,even now an 8,indian frontier0 does no longer exist4 ,the abiding places of the ,indians are almost everywhere surrounded by rapidly increasing populations of white men eagerly pressing upon the ,indian lands4 ,one reservation after another is broken up to make room for new lines of communication and for agricultural and mining enterprises4 ,however conscientious the government may be in its intention and endeavor to protect the rights of the ,indians at all points1 it is evident that the ,indians will soon1 in every part of the country1 be interspersed with an aggressive force1 constantly growing in volume and power1 which will threaten to overwhelm them like a rising flood4 ,their circumstances are essentially changed4 ,the alternative of civilization or extermination is immediately before them--civilization enabling them to become in all important respects a part of the population among which they are to live2 or extermination in a vain struggle to maintain the habits of savage life against the progress of superior forces1 or rapid decay as miserable paupers and outcasts by the failure of self-sustaining ability4 ,this alternative presents itself not as a question looming up in the distant future1 to be solved by coming generations1 but as a question involving the existence of the young generation of ,indians now living4 ,it is1 in one word1 a question of immediate urgency4 ,if the ,indians are to live at all1 they must learn to live like white men4 ,they can no longer stand in the way of the development of the country1 but they must be enabled to become part of that development1 and thus to be benefited by it4 ,the 8white man's way0 of which they are in the habit of speaking1 must not1 as heretofore1 remain to them a mere vague1 shadowy idea1 but they must acquire a practical conception of what the white man's way really is1 what its objects are1 and by what means those objects are attained4 ,they must acquire that conception soon1 for they will need it soon4 ,the education of the young generation of ,indians is therefore an immediately pressing necessity4 ,and it must be an education that takes them out of their traditional ways of thinking1 out of their old ambitions and habits of life4 ,they must not only learn some reading and writing1 but they must learn what reading and writing is for in the practical competitions of human existence4 ,they must learn how to work and how to make their work useful4 ,they must learn to love work by seeing and appreciating the fruits of it4 ,industrial training of a thoroughly practical kind must therefore go hand-in-hand with the ordinary rudimentary school education4 ,the two things must be carried on with constant regard to the unity of aim4 ,the schools at ,hampton1 ,carlisle and ,forest ,grove are conducted upon this principle1 and the results attained there prove that ,indian youths can be taught the things required to provide for the necessities of life and to lift the ,indian above the state of the pauper as well as of the savage4 ,of course we must not expect too much of them4 ,we must not expect that they will issue from these schools as model men and model women in every respect4 ,we must not expect that on the average they will be better than the average of white boys and girls1 raised under the same circumstances and with the same advantages or disadvantages1 would be4 ,in point of fact1 the reports about the young men and women who1 after having gone through their three years' term at ,hampton or ,carlisle1 returned to their people in the western country1 have been as different as reports would be about white boys and girls similarly situated4 ,some were bright1 active and industrious1 others dull and indolent4 ,but a large majority of them have been doing well and showed a marked superiority in character1 ambition and conduct over other young ,indians who had not enjoyed the same kind of education4 ,there is no doubt that their presence among their people as teachers and examples and as a moving force generally will exercise a most healthy and elevating influence1 provided the number of ,indians so educated be large enough to make them among the rising generation the rule1 instead of their remaining exceptional cases1 as they now are4 ,it is1 therefore1 essential that such schools and the number of pupils in them be multiplied as much as possible4 ,the schools at ,hampton and ,carlisle are mentioned here in preference to the schools established at the different agencies1 partly because the former are superior as to the force of teachers employed there1 as well as to their equipment in other respects1 and partly because they offer to their ,indian pupils the peculiar advantage of withdrawing them entirely from the savage influences of the ,indian camps and placing them under the immediate influence of civilized surroundings1 where they can learn the 8white man's way10 by seeing civilization at work4 ,but as this method of educating young ,indians is expensive1 and ,congress rather parsimonious as to appropriations for such purposes1 the number of ,indians profiting from it is necessarily very small in proportion to the whole population1 while it ought to be very large4 ,the establishment of an ,indian school on the same plan near the ,santee agency in ,nebraska1 as contemplated by the ,american ,missionary ,association1 is therefore all the more to be welcomed4 ,although the surroundings of that school will not be quite as civilized as those of ,hampton and ,carlisle1 yet the ,santee reservation is at least on all sides easily accessible to civilized influences4 ,it is a small tract1 encircled by settlements of white people4 ,at the same time1 a school established there will be able to draw its pupils from the great ,sioux reserve in ,dakota at small cost1 the distance being inconsiderable and the means of communication cheap and convenient4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association could scarcely render a more valuable service to the ,indian race or do more credit to its own good judgment and benevolent impulses than by making so valuable an addition to the educational forces among the red men4 99 99 99 99 99 --,a difficulty in prosecuting the work among the ,indians in ,british ,columbia is found in the fact that the tribes speak distinct languages4 ,not less than seven different dialects are used in the range of country embraced by missionary effort4 ,,origin ,,and ,,history ,,of ,,work ,,at ,,carlisle4 ,,by ,,capt4 ,r4 ,h4 ,,pratt4 ,in compliance with your request ,i herewith furnish you with a brief history of the ,carlisle ,school1 and some account of its industrial features4 ,it originated in the sending to ,florida from the ,indian ,territory of #gd ,indian prisoners in the spring of #ahge4 ,at the instance of ,general ,sheridan ,i was selected by the ,war ,department and placed in charge of those prisoners1 they having been under my care at ,fort ,sill4 ,they were from the ,cheyenne1 ,arapahoe1 ,kiowa and ,comanche tribes and were selected for this banishment because of well-known offenses against the peace of the frontier4 ,some of them were guilty of the most outrageous crimes4 ,years of army service among the ,indians and observation of their treatment had led me to change my views for opinions in favor of giving to the ,indian a broader chance and a desire that he might be brought more in contact with the peaceful and industrious side of civilized life1 and so before the prisoners were started from ,fort ,sill ,i wrote to my superiors urging that they be educated and trained industrially during their imprisonment4 ,soon after reaching ,st4 ,augustine ,i wrote repeatedly to the ,war ,department urging that some locality with more industrial surroundings be selected and the prisoners be transferred4 ,this was denied1 and ,i then set to work to make the best use of the elements to be found in the sleepy old ,spanish town4 ,with no means1 ,i was forced to seek the co-operation of charitable and missionary folks4 ,miss ,s4 ,a4 ,mather1 ,miss ,perit1 ,mrs4 ,king ,gibbs1 ,mrs4 ,couper ,gibbs1 of ,st4 ,augustine1 and ,mrs4 ,dr4 ,caruthers of ,tarrytown1 ,n4,y41 winter resident of ,st4 ,augustine1 volunteered to teach and did teach the classes of those grown ,indian men for two years and a half1 giving them about one hour's instruction daily4 ,industrially there was little practical opportunity1 but numbers were placed for different periods to work on saw mills1 at picking oranges1 as hostlers1 grubbing the land1 boating and whatever could be found in connection with their own necessities and comfort in the old fort4 ,twice we boated pine logs from a distance and constructed log houses within the fort1 riving the clap-boards1 building stick chimneys1 chinking and daubing that they might learn to construct their own homes4 ,some of them advanced rapidly in acquiring literary1 ,english speaking and industrial knowledge4 ,others were very stupid4 ,the greatest success in the labor line was in placing five men to grub five acres that had intimidated other laborers both white and black4 ,the undergrowth and roots to be removed were of the most dense and appalling kind1 and yet the ,indians stuck to it until they had made a complete success of it4 ,another of the best evidences of the success of our labor efforts was a petition signed by a very considerable number of laborers and others of the community asking that ,i be estopped in the putting of the ,indians out to labor in competition with other classes1 as ,i was taking bread from the mouths of those who were dependent upon such labor for their living1 etc4 ,in the spring of #ahgh the authorities at ,washington determined to release the prisoners and permit them to return to their homes4 ,there were #bb of them who preferred to remain ,east and get a better knowledge of civilized life and more education before going home4 ,the expenses of these #bb young men were undertaken by different charitable people4 ,gen4 ,s4 ,c4 ,armstrong1 of the ,hampton ,normal ,institute1 received #ag into his institution1 while four went to ,paris ,hill1 near ,utica1 ,n4,y41 under the immediate charge of ,rev4 ,j4 ,b4 ,wickes1 an ,episcopal clergyman1 encouraged by ,bishop ,huntington1 all the expenses being undertaken by ,mrs4 ,burnham4 ,one was taken to ,tarrytown1 ,n4,y41 in ,dr4 ,caruther's own family4 ,hampton ,institute being an industrial school1 furnished the most seasonable and practical education of any institution ,i was able to find4 ,the remainder of the party were returned to their respective agencies1 and such was the effect of their training in ,florida during their three years' absence1 that they at once became the best element for progress in their tribes4 ,at this time1 while a few have gone back to the blanket condition1 most likely from necessity1 because no other way was open to them1 there is abundant testimony in the reports of their respective agents during the past four years that they are still a useful and leading industrious element among their people4 ,a few weeks after the arrival of the party at ,hampton ,institute1 ,general ,armstrong was so favorably impressed by the conduct and progress of the #ag he had undertaken1 that he was willing to increase the number by adding #ej more1 and including girls4 ,mr4 ,schurz and ,mr4 ,mc,crary1 then ,secretaries of the ,interior and ,war ,departments1 accepted the proposition1 and ,i was sent1 in the fall of #ahgh1 to ,dakota1 and brought away #di children from six different agencies of the ,sioux1 ,gros ,ventre1 ,mandan and ,arickeree tribes4 ,these1 together with the former ,florida prisoners1 were placed under training in all the varied systems of literary and industrial pursuits4 ,hampton ,institute provides liberally for its colored students1 and side by side with those colored pupils the ,indian boys and girls1 in perfect harmony with the new life1 demonstrated their capacity to hold their own in improving the best of chances4 ,it was very much desired by the friends of this new movement1 and particularly ,general ,armstrong1 that ,i should remain with it1 and a clause was introduced in the army appropriation bill1 which passed ,congress in the spring of #ahgi1 for the detail of one officer1 not above the rank of captain1 for duty with reference to ,indian education4 ,it was a plan which ,i had urged for several years that to get the best results in our educational work among ,indian children as many as possible should be removed from reservation and tribal influences and placed in the atmosphere of civilized life1 and to this end ,i had urged the use of vacant military posts and barracks as furnishing1 without much cost in changing and improving buildings1 places to make a beginning1 and ,i proposed to the ,interior and ,war ,departments that ,i would undertake the education of #bej or #cjj children at the old military buildings at ,carlisle4 ,this proposition was accepted1 and after many preliminaries ,i was sent in ,september1 #ahgi1 to the ,rosebud and ,pine ,ridge ,agencies in ,dakota and brought away #hd children1 and immediately after went to the ,indian ,territory and from the ,kiowa1 ,cheyenne1 ,pawnee and other tribes brought #eb more4 ,to these were added #aa from the ,hampton ,institute of the young men who had been with me in ,florida4 ,the school was opened on the first of ,november with #adg students4 ,to these were added from time to time children from various ,western tribes1 and at the end of ,july1 #ahhj1 we numbered #bci children1 about one-third of whom were girls4 ,at the end of the second year1 ,october1 #ahha1 we had increased to #bie4 ,at the present writing we number #cgi--acb girls and #bdg boys4 ,from the beginning our principle has been to place the most emphasis on industrial training1 next ,english speaking and then literary training4 ,to accomplish the first we very early in the work established shops for mechanical instruction in carpentry1 blacksmithing1 wagon-making1 harness-making1 tailoring1 tinsmithing1 shoemaking1 printing1 baking and on our farm of #aae acres gave some scope for agricultural training4 ,we have avoided theory in our industries and adhered to practice1 being governed to a great extent by the old apprentice system4 ,we have at the head of each branch a skilled mechanic as practical instructor1 and as nearly as possible we pursue the methods of trades people in their instructions to apprentices4 ,we give half of each day to work and the other half to school1 and have found that our progress is proportionately greater in each than it would be if the attention was directed to either the one or the other for the whole time4 ,under this system we have in training as carpenters #ac boys2 as wagon-makers and blacksmiths1 #ae2 as harness-makers1 #ae2 as shoemakers1 #ai2 as tailors1 #ab2 as turners1 #aa2 as printers1 #e2 as bakers1 #c2 and every boy not engaged at some trade is required to work during the season upon the farm4 ,such products of our labors as we are not able to make use of for the school are purchased by the ,indian ,department and shipped to agencies4 ,we think our boys as forward in capacity for receiving instruction on each of the several branches as the average white boy4 ,in the blacksmith shop our apprentice boys after two years' instruction1 are able to iron a wagon1 repair a plow1 shoe a horse1 etc4 ,in the wood-working department able to get out all the different wood parts of the wagon ready for the blacksmith4 ,in the tin-smithing to construct coffee pots1 buckets1 pails1 pans1 cups1 etc4 ,in the harness-making to cut out and manufacture harness4 ,in the tailoring to cut out and manufacture clothing4 ,in shoemaking to repair and manufacture boots and shoes4 ,in printing to set up and distribute type and make up forms4 ,in baking we have no other help than ,indians4 ,we give to our girls instruction in the various industries of the sex and find no general lack4 ,in cooking1 sewing1 house work1 laundry work1 etc41 they are apt pupils4 ,one of the most useful features of our work has been the placing of our boys and girls in private families1 principally among farmers1 where they perform the same kind of labor and are subjected to the same home and labor influences that white children of their own ages receive4 ,this has the most beneficial results4 ,the children take on ,english speaking and the industries of civilized life very speedily4 ,during vacation we place out all we can spare from our own work1 and during the winter we allow a considerable number to remain and attend the public schools in the several neighborhoods1 they being required to do such work mornings and evenings as they are capable of and so pay for their board and clothes4 ,by this course we are enabled to carry a very considerable number more pupils than we are allowed appropriation for4 ,it is plain that the real hindrance to ,indian progress is found in their being kept entirely separated from the other masses of our population1 and by every act of our government and every sentiment of its people1 societies1 missionary and others1 made to feel that they are a separate people and must so remain forever4 ,through their education in separate schools1 their home life upon prison reservations with their liberty of coming and going abridged to these reservations1 with all their aspirations and ambitions so limited1 there can be no healthy growth4 ,to overcome these difficulties the ,indian mind and the mind of the public as well as ,congress must be educated to grant to them the enlarged privileges accorded to all other races4 ,the boy will never learn to swim until he goes into the water1 and the experiences of industrial life and civilized life through its associations and competitions will determine for the ,indian and white the true status4 ,we have had quite enough of the ,sioux1 ,cheyenne1 ,comanche1 etc41 as ,sioux1 ,cheyenne1 ,comanche1 etc4 ,we can end their existence among us as such separate people by a broad and generous system of ,english education and training1 which will reach all the #ej1jjj children and in a very few years remove all our trouble from them as a separate people and as separate tribes among us1 and instead of feeding clothing and caring for them from year to year1 put them in condition to feed clothe and care for themselves4 ,our experiences in many individual cases in the last few years make it very evident that not only may we fit the ,indian to take care of himself in his own home1 but may fit him to go and come and abide in the land wherever he may choose1 and so lose his identity4 ,illustration3 ,,mandan ,,hut1 ,,dakota4 ,,the ,,history ,,and ,,outlook ,,of ,,the ,,indian ,,work ,,transferred ,,to ,,the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,,prof4 ,,alfred ,l4 ,,riggs4 ,just fifty years ago two ,congregational young men from ,connecticut1 the ,messrs4 ,samuel and ,gideon ,pond1 pressed on into the heart of the then unknown continent to see what they could do for the ,indian4 ,they landed at ,fort ,snelling1 in what is now ,minnesota1 and began their volunteer mission among an ,eastern branch of the ,dakota or ,sioux nation4 ,one year later the ,american ,board sent out the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,williamson on a tour of exploration1 and the next year after that a mission was regularly established4 ,the organized work gathered in the volunteers1 and1 moreover1 according to the fashion of the times1 ,congregational relations disappeared and work was started on the ,presbyterian basis4 ,for years it was a slow1 hard lift against the weight of heathenism and pride of race4 ,nowhere is race pride stronger than among the ,indians4 ,as is often the case1 those who have least to be proud of vaunt themselves the most4 ,so1 while the ,indian has to acknowledge that the white man is possessor of gifts that class him with the gods 7the ,dakota name for white man being the same as that he applies to his gods71 and thus for the sake of his mysterious power he fears him1 yet personally he despises him as different from himself and effeminate4 ,and heathenism6 ,some would have us believe that it did not exist2 that the ,indian naturally was as good a ,christian as need be4 ,the courtesy of the ,indian perhaps leads to this deceptive view4 ,he will assent to everything you say rather than be so impolite as to contradict you4 ,then1 too1 his pantheism easily makes room for another god4 ,so the white man's god soon had his banner set up at their sacred rites together with the ,stone god1 the ,day god1 the ,night god1 the ,thunder god1 and the god of the ,north4 ,but when ,christ claims the whole of their worship1 and belief in him is seen to require the giving up of their other faiths1 and the casting away of their charms and incantations1 then the antagonism of the unregenerate heart breaks out here as everywhere4 ,and the magicians and 8medicine men0 are stirred up to bitter and unremitting warfare as soon as they discover that their craft is in danger4 ,as if here were not enough obstacles to meet1 there comes in the opposition begotten of the selfishness and dissoluteness of unprincipled white men4 ,for years the fur trade was almost as much the enemy of missions as was the slave trade4 ,the agents of this great enterprise were bound to keep the ,indians hunters and trappers in order that their warehouses might be filled with furs4 ,the fur trade also controlled the government1 and even to-day its power is felt through laws made then for its benefit and that yet remain on the statute book4 ,hence in its day the fur trade was a foe to be dreaded1 for it could exert its power in a thousand secret ways4 ,it could break up schools1 scare people away from religious meetings1 and put a ban on the ,christian teacher1 if content to leave him alive4 ,after thirty years of patient labor the reward seemed about to come4 ,christianity was proving its power to disintegrate heathenism1 break down prejudice and survive the enmity of unprincipled white men4 ,then the outbreak and massacres of #ahfb occurred1 seemingly sweeping everything away4 ,it was the death-struggle of heathenism1 alarmed at the steady advance of ,christianity4 ,other political causes and conditions merely made this outbreak possible4 ,and yet what seemed annihilation was only multiplication and dissemination4 ,again was fulfilled the ,scripture3 8,they that were scattered abroad went preaching the word40 ,and the conversion in the military prisons of hundreds as it were in a day1 is one of the notable instances of the power of ,god's spirit4 ,twenty years ago the field of ,christian missions among the ,dakotas was confined to a small section of the nation then dwelling in a corner of ,minnesota4 ,but now the field extends over the great ,missouri valley and on northward toward the ,saskatchawan in the ,british ,possessions4 ,the work whose beginnings we have noted1 originally one under the ,american ,board1 has since been divided4 ,in #ahga1 at the time of the general division of the missions of the ,american ,board1 that part of the ,dakota ,mission immediately under the charge of the venerable ,dr4 ,williamson and his son1 ,rev4 ,john ,p4 ,williamson1 was transferred to the care of the ,presbyterian ,board of ,foreign ,missions4 ,but the larger portion remained with the other veteran of the mission1 ,rev4 ,stephen ,b4 ,riggs1 under the care of the ,american ,board4 ,and now with the year #ahhc another transfer is made to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,but the five native churches1 with a membership of #cdj1 that had meanwhile grown up about ,sisseton ,agency are graduated from foreign missions into a home mission connection1 and so naturally pass under the care of the ,presbyterian ,home ,mission ,board4 ,it is not within the scope of this short article to speak of the work accomplished by the ,episcopal ,mission in the same field1 which had its beginning about thirty years later than the original ,dakota ,mission1 and in recent years has had very considerable success4 ,nor can we speak particularly of the portion of our great field lying across the ,british line1 for though we have furnished the native laborers it is not organically connected with us4 ,but as for the rest of the original mission1 even though divided1 it works as one4 ,it has one ,general ,conference1 and in all its publications and matters of common concern acts as one mission still4 ,the statistics of the ,dakota ,mission1 as thus defined1 show #g stations1 #f ordained missionaries1 #bf assistant missionaries1 #ac churches1 #ab native pastors and preachers1 #i native teachers1 and #hdg church members1 contributing during the past year #ggi4hc for their own missions among the heathen ,indians1 and #a1jhj4eh for pastoral support and church expenses4 ,of this there now passes directly to the care of the ,american ,missionary ,association #e stations1 with also an interest in the ,native ,missionary field at ,devil's ,lake1 #d ordained missionaries1 #ba assistant missionaries1 #b churches1 ,pilgrim ,church at ,santee and ,shiloh ,church at the ,sully ,station1 with #h native preachers1 #e native teachers1 and a church membership of #aid4 ,as has been noticed1 the organization of the work from the first has been on the ,presbyterian model1 and thus the fruits of the mission have mostly gone into the ,presbyterian connection4 ,the church at the ,fort ,sully ,station was an exception4 ,it was organized as a ,congregational church4 ,nevertheless1 this ,presbyterian cast1 this whole native force1 is to be considered as one1 and will be used by whichever denomination is ready to prosecute the work most vigorously1 for the denominationalism of these churches is not of a radical type1 as is instanced by the recent change of ecclesiastical relations on the part of the ,pilgrim ,church at ,santee4 ,this is the original mother church1 but in order to come into closer and more sympathetic relations with the churches that support the ,santee ,training ,school1 it voted cheerfully and almost unanimously to leave ,presbytery and become ,congregational4 ,indeed this is not hard for them to do1 for ,indians are naturally very democratic4 ,in the work that may now be done for this people1 ,,santee ,,normal ,,training ,,school must be an important factor4 ,it has vital relation to all these native churches1 and it has a name among the heathen communities4 ,its growth has been slow1 for it has taken time and work to instil the idea of a higher education into the minds of the people4 ,henceforth its growth might be rapid4 ,it now has one hundred and one pupils in attendance1 with seventeen instructors1 including those in charge of the industrial and boarding departments4 ,this winter a number of pupils have been turned away for lack of room4 ,if accommodations could be provided1 the number of pupils might soon be doubled4 ,while giving great attention to industrial training1 it affords unparalleled advantages for that training which is needed to make teachers suited to ,indian schools4 ,the school is the basis of evangelizing the ,indian4 ,there will be no large audiences to preach to1 except on exceptional occasions1 until the school has gathered a company of disciples4 ,certain persons not understanding the nature of missionary work1 or unable to take more than a superficial view1 have recently represented our schools as of low grade1 and unnecessary to real missionary work4 ,but this is contradicted by the grand progress of the work4 ,we have spoken of five mission stations as now passing under the care of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,but of these ,standing ,rock is hardly opened1 and ,berthold and ,sully stations are sadly in need of reinforcements4 ,and there are the large ,indian ,agencies of ,spotted ,tail's and ,red ,cloud's tribes1 numbering about #g1jjj each1 which we ought to occupy4 ,then there is the ,crow country in ,montana1 next door to our ,berthold ,mission4 ,we should have at once six ordained missionaries and their wives1 with as many more assistant missionaries1 all picked men4 ,this would enable us to manage a yet larger number of native missionary teachers working along with them4 ,illustration3 ,,sisseton ,,girls1 ,,with ,,teacher4 ,the tribes speaking the ,dakota language are the most numerous of any ,indian people upon the continent4 ,they are now universally open to ,christianity and ,christian civilization4 ,they now look to ,christian people for their future4 ,within the last ten or twelve years the whole temper of their mind has changed4 ,the noted chief1 ,sitting ,bull1 is an illustration4 ,only a few years ago he hated the very wind that blew from the direction of the white man's country4 ,when the wind blew from the east he would send out the town crier to say1 8,get you all into your teepees4 ,this is bad air from the white man's country40 ,but when it blew from the north his crier would proclaim1 8,come out and breathe the healthy air40 ,and once when a woman of the tribe brought home a 8rooster0 from a distant trading post to enliven the tedium of her labor1 ,sitting ,bull heard it crow and instantly dispatched his chief soldier to 8soldier kill0 the woman1 that is1 cut up her tent and kill her horses1 for the crime of having that white man's bird in the sacred precincts of a ,dakota camp4 ,but now the same ,sitting ,bull is petitioning for ,christian teachers1 and land1 and domestic animals1 and undoubtedly would also welcome 8the-bird-that-crows-in-the-morning40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,indian ,,industries ,,at ,,hampton4 ,,by ,,gen4 ,s4 ,c4 ,,armstrong4 ,every ,indian boy who comes to ,hampton is allowed his choice to learn farming or a trade1 and to select the trade he prefers1 to which he is expected to stick4 ,they often wish to change after some months1 for they are a fickle people4 ,while this is by no means done as a matter of course1 it has sometimes been found wise to do so4 ,a boy who could do nothing at blacksmithing made remarkable progress in the wheelwright's shop2 one who is poor on the farm may be good in the shoe-shop1 and vice versa2 but it does not do to encourage shifting trades4 ,the girls go through the same routine of housework1 cooking1 cutting and making and mending clothes4 ,the boys are assigned to work as follows3 carpenters1 #ae2 painters1 #a2 tinsmiths1 #f2 shoe-makers1 #ac2 harness-makers1 #c2 farmers1 #ac2 blacksmiths1 #c2 wheelwrights1 #c2 tailors1 #a4 ,a generous lady in ,new ,york ,city has recently given #e1jjj for an ,indian workshop1 which will be completed and occupied by the first of ,april next1 and be a most satisfactory change from the shed in which they have for four years uncomfortably worked at their trades4 ,considering the past of the ,indian1 the disposition of our boys and girls to work is remarkable4 ,the general rule is to work from seven to twelve o'clock1 ,a4,m41 or from one to six o'clock1 ,p4,m41 ,saturday being holiday4 ,those who work mornings study afternoons1 and vice versa4 ,all are paid1 girls as well as boys1 usually at the rate of #b4ej per month1 for to expect ,indians to take a real interest in their work without some compensation is absurd4 ,it is weak and foolish to reason that the skill they attain is enough compensation4 ,human nature requires something more4 ,on the other hand they purchase all their underclothing and shoes with their earnings1 and are thus taught the use of money and the true value of garments1 and become quite skillful in buying4 ,a school uniform is provided for each one1 made in our tailoring department4 ,their appreciation of work is a direct contradiction to the statement that an ,indian hates to labor4 ,frequently boys who are working a half-day at some trade will ask to be allowed to work the entire day1 including ,saturday1 so as to earn more and be better able to take care of themselves when they go home4 ,their wages are then increased and they go to night school4 ,every such application is encouraging4 ,especially those who make extra time in the shops are inclined to save4 ,they generally agree to draw but one-half of extra earnings1 the other half being saved to buy them tools and other outfit when they shall finally leave school4 ,we allow ten per cent4 interest on all such savings2 they are quick to see the advantage of laying up money4 ,they seem to have no marked aptitude for special trades1 unless it be for work in leather1 shoe and harness-making4 ,their ancestors have dealt in this commodity more than in any other4 ,they take to all handiwork remarkably2 while quick to learn1 they are slow to execute4 ,they seldom bungle or 8botch0 a job4 ,the first pair of shoes made by an apprentice is always serviceable4 ,an ,indian carpenter will make as good a mortise as a white one1 but will take three times as long4 ,our expert harness-maker says he can do no better work than some of his boys1 but they are very slow about it4 ,we are constantly making and selling carts made by ,sioux boys4 ,they have made all our school benches1 desks1 wardrobes and wash-stands1 besides window-frames1 etc41 for the outside market4 ,we would be only too glad to make buggy or plow harness1 single or double1 tin-ware of all kinds and brogan shoes for individuals or institutions in the ,north or ,south1 solely on the ground of the merit and cheapness of the work done4 ,a neat carriage harness was made last summer for a lady in ,newport1 ,r4,i4 ,of the #ejj dozen articles of tinware1 #ge sets of double plow harness1 and #b1jjj pairs of men's shoes made last year by our ,indian boys for the use of the ,western tribes 7ordered by the ,indian ,department at the lowest contract prices of the previous year7 the ,new ,york inspectors reported3 8,they are as well and as strongly made1 and for actual service fully equal to any purchased by the ,department40 ,this year we are making an even larger amount of material for the ,indian ,department1 but at prices which little more than cover cost of material4 ,an outside private trade would be much more desirable4 ,we were paid for men's brogans 8extra0 good leather1 #a4bb per pair1 boxed and delivered in ,new ,york ,city4 ,carlisle does even more than ,hampton in supplying ,indians1 and with excellent success4 ,owing to bodily ailments1 ,indian labor is more unsteady than that of ,negroes4 ,while in their own life they have endurance1 a steady routine of industry is new to them1 and they are for our purposes a rather feeble race3 they find digging exhausting1 but on the hunter's trail or on the warpath they are tireless when we would soon be weary4 ,unless every ,indian child is educated to some occupation1 teaching is of little account4 ,hard work rather than the higher studies gives them the best drill4 ,as for all1 so for ,indians1 home influence is a great thing4 ,after the best practical education they are not fit for the loose1 idle1 dirty life of ,indian camps any more than any other children4 ,what is to be done8 ,the best success with the thirty ,sioux children who returned in ,october1 #ahha1 to their agencies 7five of them girls7 has been with those to whom the agents gave separate rooms near the agencies1 having their food cooked and their life led separately4 ,an efficient agent will1 by the care he takes1 save four-fifths of our ,indian graduates to decent lives2 a careless1 weak agent 7and not a third of the sixty ,u4,s4 ,indian ,agents are first-class men7 will lose four-fifths of them4 ,we cannot make men of them in three years1 but can give them a start in that time that a good agent can keep up1 and lead them to true success4 ,here1 more and more1 we find the real trouble2 not with the ,indian1 but in our miserable system of paying so small salaries to ,indian agents that a competent one is the exception4 ,the boy or girl who goes home finds no strong1 kind friend to advise and help2 the current of influence is against a ,christian life4 ,here the missionary is needed2 never more than now4 ,hampton1 ,carlisle and the many schools that are educating ,indians need to be supplemented by good agents and wise missionaries who will help them to stand against the odds that would make the new life they have chosen nest to impossible4 ,here is the point of chief anxiety4 ,public sentiment must be felt at ,washington before it shall remove the chief stumbling-block to ,indian progress--poor agents4 ,as ,secretary ,teller says in his last ,report1 the ,indians are chiefly on reservations1 and must for the present be treated there2 to be gradually pushed upon lands of their own1 individually1 by the efforts of wise men and the influence of ,christian education4 ,,revival ,,work ,,among ,,indians ,,at ,,hampton4 ,miss ,isabel ,b4 ,eustis1 in giving an account of the revival meetings at ,hampton1 writes as follows of the ,indians3 ,meanwhile at one end of the chapel there sat a company of one hundred who took no part in the service4 ,the ,indian students watched with wondering and wistful eyes the scenes around them4 8,pass me not1 ,o ,gentle ,saviour10 they sang often in their own services during these days1 and the ,lord heard their cry and turned aside and called them too4 ,stago1 our fiery little ,apache boy1 heard his voice1 and set hard to work to conquer his temper and self-will4 ,the quick-witted1 ambitious1 head-strong girl1 whose influence over the other scholars we dreaded1 listened1 and her hard expression softened1 and the stubborn will yielded1 and with gentleness and humility she met the daily requirements which had often roused her rebellious spirit before4 ,shallow natures grew earnest and proud1 and we knew that there was one walking with the ,indian students too who could purify and inspire and help4 ,on ,wednesday evening our senior ,indian boy1 of his own accord1 left his class and took his seat with the other ,indian scholars4 ,waiting his opportunity1 he rose and called the attention of the school to those who sat behind him4 ,he reminded me of the darkness out of which they had come1 and of the dangers to which they must return4 ,he told us that they longed for a share in the blessing ,god was giving the school1 and asked our patience while they prayed to the ,father1 and spoke of ,him in a language we could not understand4 ,kamnach rose first4 ,kamnach came to the school four years ago1 directly from his wild ,indian life4 ,his hair was uncut2 he wore ,indian clothes2 he had been always familiar with scenes of bloodshed1 and placed little value on human life4 ,after three years he went back to his home1 a changed man we thought in appearance and heart4 ,but it was hard to stand among his savage comrades4 ,he plead to come back to school4 ,he was a happy boy1 when1 less than a year ago1 he placed his foot again on ,hampton soil4 ,poor boy6 he had yet to learn that always his worst temptations would come from his own distorted heart4 ,some misunderstanding of his position as a returned student1 some distrust of those who were over him1 and he fell into passionate hatred1 and was ready to commit a deliberate and deadly crime4 ,we thought his repentance would be quick and deep1 but not so4 ,the first ,sunday of the new year1 the anniversary of the day on which he confessed ,christ1 he had no heart to meet the ,lord1 whose first command was to love and forgive4 ,but the passing ,saviour's voice reached him now4 ,he stood before the crowded school1 and with the help of an interpreter acknowledged his sin1 and renewed his allegiance to the ,saviour1 and begged the ,indian students to follow the ,lord ,jesus1 though they would find many things in ,his religion hard to understand and difficult to do4 ,after ,kamnach's confession a ,sioux boy made a prayer4 ,he spoke in another tongue1 but more than one felt his heart was lifted to the ,father's heart by the earnestness and pathos of the stranger's voice4 ,another tried to speak in broken ,english4 ,missing the words he wanted to say1 waiting and struggling for confession1 he acknowledged ,jesus ,christ as the ,saviour of his soul4 ,our hearts were knit together in love4 ,we knew that we belonged to one common family and nothing could separate from the love of ,christ4 ,evidently the son of ,god who came to save the lost finds nothing in the ,indian nature he cannot soften and subdue4 ,evidently the ,indian is able to place his confidence in such a ,saviour and yield himself in glad obedience to ,him4 ,,children',s ,,page4 99 99 99 99 99 ,illustration3 ,,indian ,,hut4 ,,the ,,little ,,indian ,,of ,,clear ,,lake4 ,,abridged ,,from ,,gospel ,,in ,,all ,,lands4 ,did you ever see an ,indian--a real1 live ,indian--in bead-embroidered buck-skin coat and breeches1 girded with a curiously wrought wampum belt1 shod with moccasins1 his face painted black and red1 his hair bristling1 like a porcupine's back1 with a gay forest of feathers--as he dashed through the woods or over the prairie1 on a wild horse1 or strode along proudly on foot1 with bow and arrows in his hands1 and a large tomahawk and scalping-knife in his girdle8 ,you have seen him in the pictures1 at least1 and thought him a fine sight2 and perhaps you felt in your heart that it must be fine to live such a wild1 daring life1 hunting1 fishing and roaming in the woods and over the fields4 ,but all ,indians are not like him4 ,tribes differ very much in their character and habits4 ,besides1 they are never quite so brave and fine in real life as they are in pictures4 ,most of them are poor miserable creatures2 and if you should go into one of their wigwams of sticks and barks1 and see their naked bodies1 filthy faces and tangled hair1 as they squat in the smoke and stench around a little fire1 on the bare earth1 in the middle of the shanty1 snatching at poor food with dirty fingers1 like a pack of ravenous wolves4 ,i do not believe you would think it very fine1 ever after have the least desire to live like an ,indian4 ,the little boy of our story was born and lived on the shores of ,clear ,lake1 a fine sheet of water among the mountains1 thirty or forty miles north of ,napo ,valley4 ,like all his mates1 he was so short and thick that he seemed to be about as broad as he was long4 ,his skin was not copper-colored like that of most other ,indians1 but black4 ,his face was broad and round1 his lips thick and pouting1 and his nose wide and flat4 ,his long coarse hair1 all tangled and matted1 dangled around his high cheek-bones and above his naked shoulders1 like the shaggy mane of a ,canadian pony1 and half hid his coarse1 brutal features3 a pair of small1 round1 dull eyes1 like leaden bullets1 made the treacherous expression that slept in every line of his features seem ten-fold more revolting4 ,his wigwam1 or lodge1 was nothing but a rude screen of bushes or skins to break the force of the wind4 ,you would not think it very nice or comfortable1 but he did1 and could sleep just as well there1 or on the ground beside a large stone1 or behind the stump of a fallen tree as you do on the softest feathers4 ,but he never slept two nights in the same place1 for fear of being discovered by an enemy and murdered4 ,it is a hard and cheerless life which those little ,indian children lead1 as you can easily see1 but the life of this little ,indian was especially so2 for his father and mother had both been murdered1 and he had no friends to care for him any more kindly than they would care for a dog2 and even the ,hias ,tyee1 or ,big ,chief of the tribe1 whose duty it was to see that this little waif on the stormy sea of ,indian life was provided for1 thought only to get some advantage out of him2 and so1 when he saw a white man camping one day on the shores of the lake1 he brought down the boy and offered to sell him for ten dollars4 ,it proved to be a kind1 good-hearted man1 who saw that the little fellow was friendless and forlorn1 and so the bargain was soon closed1 and he became servant to the 8pale-face0 till he was twenty-one years old1 on condition of receiving his food and clothing4 ,on reaching home1 the first thing1 of course1 was to clip off his dangling locks1 give him a thorough scrubbing with soap and brush1 and cover his black nakedness with decent clothing4 ,that afternoon1 when the pigs were fed1 he was found with his nose in the trough eating sour milk with the animals as if he had been one of them4 ,at night nothing could persuade him to sleep in a room or on a bed2 and after dark1 when the family had retired to rest1 he stole out of the house as slyly as a cat1 and hid himself away in the tall weeds beside the fence4 ,every night for many weeks he did the same1 and was so fearful of being murdered in his sleep that he changed his nest every night1 never daring to sleep twice in the same spot4 ,his tongue was constantly telling lies1 and he would steal everything he fancied that came in his way4 ,he seemed to have no idea of right and wrong4 ,he could not comprehend what such words as love and duty and kindness meant4 ,fear was the only motive which had the least influence in controlling him4 ,even the difference between cleanliness and dirt was a thought too sublime and profound for his understanding4 ,but he could believe in ghosts and haunting spirits of dead men1 like most other ignorant and barbarous people2 and he thought they lingered around every stump and tree1 and followed him wherever he went4 ,he could hear them fluttering in the leaves1 or rapping on the limbs and trunks of the trees1 or whispering in the wind4 ,he supposed they took possession of the bodies of men and animals1 and caused them to sing and dance1 and do all sorts of silly tricks1 by a kind of inspiration4 ,he had some notions of the ,great ,spirit1 it is true1 but they were confused and indistinct1 and had little power over him1 while a slavish fear of the inferior spirits and other such ghostly nonsense tormented him night and day1 and made him a timid1 miserable1 degraded1 creature4 ,had you seen him in that condition you would have thought it impossible to make anything good out of such a stupid little animal4 ,you would have said it was of no use to try to teach a creature so brutal and superstitious anything about ,god and heaven1 and a higher life1 or even about the decencies of civilized society4 ,but a kind lady took him under her care4 ,she taught him to read and write4 ,she showed him the folly of believing in ghosts1 and talking with the spirits4 ,she told him the story of ,jesus1 and made him learn the ten commandments1 and the precious words of the ,saviour1 and explained to him how ,god made him1 and fed1 and clothed1 and kept him1 day by day1 and that he ought to love ,him1 and do right in return for ,his kindness4 ,she impressed him with the thought that ,god is angry with wicked boys and girls every day1 and that only the pure in heart1 whose lives are good1 can be happy on earth1 or go to heaven when they die4 ,at first he was stupid and stubborn1 and unwilling to learn2 but after a little while his stolid face began to brighten1 his dull eyes sparkled with unusual interest1 and he was more and more attentive1 till his coarse1 animal features wore an entirely new expression4 ,one day he came in with a very serious look1 and said in an earnest tone3 8,mistress1 oh me got bad heart6 ,ask ,great ,spirit to give me better heart40 ,he was told to ask for himself2 and then the poor little child of the ,great ,father went into his own room alone and shut the door1 and kneeled down beside the bed and prayed1 oh6 so earnestly1 that ,god would forgive his sins for ,jesus' sake1 and take away his wicked feelings1 and show him how to be good4 ,from that moment he was a changed boy4 ,his bad habits were all laid aside4 ,he ceased to be stupid and stubborn and inattentive4 ,he told no more lies1 and pilfered no more4 ,his face glowed with kindly feeling1 as if a ray from heaven were sleeping on it4 ,his coarse features lost their repulsive expression and became rather pleasant to see4 ,i am sure there was rejoicing in heaven that day over this little stray lamb from the wilderness2 and ,i do not doubt that when ,god gathers up his jewels from the earth the poor ,indian boy will be a precious gem in the ,saviour's crown of glory4 ,,receipts ,,for ,,february1 #ahhc4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,maine1 #bfa4bf4 have attended the administration of ,compound ,oxygen1 the new remedy for chronic and so-called 8incurable diseases10 are without a parallel in medical history4 ,as dispensers of this new remedy1 we have1 after over twelve years of earnest1 untiring and costly effort to introduce it to those who need its vitalizing and health-restoring influences1 succeeded in resting its claims on the basis of facts and results of so wide and universal a character--facts and results on record and open to the closest investigations--that no room for a question remains as to its marvelous action in restoring the diseased to health4 ,the rapidly-increasing number of those who have obtained relief from pain or been restored to health by ,compound ,oxygen1 reaching now to many thousands1 scattered throughout the whole country1 is having a wide influence on public sentiment4 ,there are no arguments so convincing as well-known facts4 ,if a man or a woman who has been suffering for years from an exhausting disease1 which no physician had been able to cure1 tries a newly-discovered remedy and is brought back to health1 the fact stands as an unanswerable argument in favor of that remedy1 so far1 at least1 as this particular case is concerned4 ,a resort to the same remedy in another case1 regarded as incurable1 and with a like result1 adds a new and stronger argument in its favor4 ,accumulate similar results to the number of hundreds and thousands1 and in the widest range of chronic and 8desperate0 diseases and abandoned cases1 and you have a weight of evidence that is irresistible4 ,on this weight of indisputable evidence we rest the claims of ,compound ,oxygen4 ,it is frequently urged against this treatment by persons who have not made themselves acquainted with the natural laws governing its action1 that the same agent is administered for all diseases--for neuralgia or catarrh2 for rheumatism or consumption2 for heart disease or bronchitis2 that we offer it as a universal specific4 ,in our ,treatise on ,compound ,oxygen1 which will be mailed free to any one who will write to us for it1 we have fully explained the nature and action of this remedy1 and shown that it is not specific to any disease or class of diseases2 but that it acts directly upon the nervous system and vital organs1 and thence universally in the whole body4 ,it gives new force and a more vigorous action to all the life-centres1 thus restoring to nature the dominant power and healthy action which had been lost4 ,this being the case1 no matter what the disease1 or where located1 it must be gradually ameliorated1 and1 if the central healthy action can be maintained1 finally cured4 ,every intelligent and unprejudiced person will at once see that if the law of action which we claim for ,compound ,oxygen be the true one1 its operation must be universal1 and not local or specific2 and that all forms of disease may be reached by this agent4 ,and the fact that they are reached1 and in so large a number of cases relieved1 verifies the theory of cure and substantiates the claims which are made for this new substance as being the most remarkable in its action of any therapeutic agent yet discovered4 ,if we contrast the violence which is so often done to the delicate organisms of the human body through the administration of drugs1 given to break the force of a disease1 and which sometimes keep the patient lingering for months in slow convalescence1 needing all the while the physician's care1 with the revitalized condition of compound oxygen patients1 the advantage on the side of the latter1 as compared with those treated under most of the prevailing systems1 becomes strikingly apparent4 ,under the new treatment1 which is by inhalation1 there is no weakening of the tone of the stomach by drugs1 and no violent assaults upon any nerve or fibre in the body1 but a gentle and subtly penetrating influence1 reaching to the very centre of all the life forces1 and restoring them to a healthier action4 ,the natural result under this treatment must be that1 when a patient recovers he is in a far better condition to resist the causes which produce disease than the patient who has had the life forces weakened through drug medication4 ,as a restorer of vital force1 it can be largely shown from the results obtained during the past twelve years1 that ,compound ,oxygen is the most efficient agent yet discovered by the medical profession4 ,its use by over-worked business and professional men1 and by all who suffer from nervous exhaustion and low vitality1 would save many hundreds of lives every year and give to thousands more the ability to work without the weariness1 exhaustion and peril which now attend their labors4 ,our large correspondence with patients and health-seekers1 throughout this and other countries1 gives evidence of the increasing confidence which is steadily growing in the public mind favorable to the ,oxygen cure4 ,the living witnesses to its remarkable efficacy1 and the warm advocates of its dispensation are1 as we have said1 rapidly increasing4 ,by personal influence and correspondence1 those who have been relieved from distressing complaints1 or cured of diseases which were steadily growing worse for years1 are sending the good news of their recovery to friends and neighbors1 near and remote4 ,many of these order the ,treatment1 and if helped or cured1 as rarely fails to be the case1 become in turn the friends and advocates of this new method of cure4 ,so the knowledge is spreading1 and the use of ,compound ,oxygen growing1 with a rapidity of which few outside of our establishment have any comprehension4 ,to those who wish to inform themselves in regard to this new ,treatment1 we will send1 free of cost1 our 8,treatise on ,compound ,oxygen10 and our pamphlet1 containing over fifty 8,unsolicited ,testimonials20 also 8,health and ,life10 our ,quarterly ,record of ,cases and ,cures1 under the ,compound
