for the uplift of womanhood the world over4 ,the call1 however1 for woman's work in ,america during the past twenty years seems to us to have been peculiarly urgent1 and yet we think the majority of the noble ,christian women in our churches have1 up to this time1 seen only dimly the demands upon them in this regard4 ,how loving1 pitying woman1 whose labors and sacrifices are so abounding in behalf of women1 should have seen with so little responsive interest the necessities for work among the colored women of this land1 is among the marvels of ,christian ethics4 ,if women1 anywhere1 are under obligation to help women1 it seems to us the women in our churches are indebted1 beyond words to tell1 to the negro women in the ,south4 ,their condition is what we have made it1 and remains what we will it4 ,but let us not convey the impression that ,christian women have been wholly indifferent to the wants of their colored sisters4 ,on the other hand1 we affirm that there is not a brighter page in modern missions1 than that which records the labors and sacrifices of ,northern women for the lowly dwellers in the cabins of the ,south4 ,we only speak1 comparatively1 of the great body1 who need to be stirred and mastered1 as have been the few who have hurried with the medicine of light and love to relieve the stricken and the despairing4 ,these have sacrificed youth and beauty1 and the hope of family love and joy1 in the attempt to serve a race4 ,with a calm and reverent step they have gone into the darkest homes of poverty and suffering to clothe the naked1 to minister to the sick1 to comfort the dying1 and to save the perishing4 ,twenty-one years ago1 when this ,association called for teachers and missionaries to submit to reproach1 and obloquy1 and ostracism for the sake of these needy ones1 these rare women1 in numbers beyond our ability to send1 answered the call4 ,and during all the years they have stood at our doors1 as they stand to-day1 saying 8,send me40 ,the work they have done in school building1 in church building1 in home building and in character building1 cannot be matched in the history of this generation1 certainly1 and probably not in the history of the world4 ,when it is remembered1 that in #ahfc the slaves in the ,south did not own an acre of ground and had not a cent of taxable property--that they had no right to know a letter of the alphabet1 and that there was not a legal marriage among them3 but that in #ahhj they were taxed for a hundred millions of dollars--that some #hjj1jjj of them had learned to read1 and that purer churches were teaching purer and better morals1 one can but exclaim1 8,what hath ,god wrought60 ,this is1 largely1 due to the ,christian teachers and missionaries of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,no society has sent so many of them to the field1 or has so signally demonstrated the quality and the value of their work4 ,if the history of many of the most promising and useful of our graduates could be written up the story would read like romance4 ,the draught upon mind1 and heart1 and body has been heavy and exhausting4 ,not a few have left the service broken in health for life1 and others have paid the penalty of overwork in early graves4 ,all this they have not complained of2 but their keenest anguish has come from lack of that fullness and warmness of sympathy which they had a right to expect from the whole ,christian sisterhood of the ,north4 ,they ask for it now1 and we ask for it in their name6 ,will not our ,christian women re-examine this question of their duty with reference to the elevation of the colored race1 and especially of the women of that race8 ,there can be no sure and lasting elevation of that people without refined and intelligent homes2 and there can be no such homes without pure and intelligent colored women to build them4 ,such women can be brought forward1 only as they have pure models to imitate1 and refined teachers to instruct and guide them4 ,fortunately1 ,northern homes are full of such models and of such teachers2 and they only need the supporting word and hand of their sisters to go forth in larger numbers1 and to lay1 more broadly and grandly1 the foundations of a regenerated ,south4 ,they know that the colored woman can be elevated by the gospel of ,christ1 they know that she can take on culture like a garment1 and be made a power in redeeming her race4 ,may we not1 then1 once more call the attention of ,christian women to this work1 so peculiarly theirs1 and laid upon them by so many providential tokens8 ,it will be of interest to a large circle of friends on both sides of the water to learn of the marriage at ,prof4 ,geo4 ,l4 ,white's residence1 ,fredonia1 ,n4,y41 of ,miss ,ella concert and at the annual collection1 so that the amount raised for this ,association may be in due proportion to that given to the other missionary societies supported by the ,congregational are not made1 but discovered as ,god has enacted1 and related them to permanent interests4 ,the making or unmaking of the one is the facile work of charlatans when by some mysterious providence they find their way into our legislative halls2 the discovery of the other is work for seers and statesmen which once done is done forever4 ,the ,revised ,statutes of this ,congress make obsolete those of the last1 not necessarily because superior wisdom has devised better1 which must prove a permanent gain2 but when a law of human society has been recognized and so enunciated that it becomes a regulating force1 civilization has taken a forward step4 ,the race is not simply less disturbed and more comfortable because temporary adjustments have been made of conflicting interests1 but it is richer and stronger because of an enduring possession1 and we can afford to labor and wait for such4 ,each new application of an old principle calls for a fresh statement of the principle4 ,that man's personal rights are modified by the fact of his social relations1 is a truth old as the beginning of civilized life1 but that he may not suffer his children to grow up in ignorance1 is a proposition startling to many1 and practically asserted by but few of our ,state governments1 though it is well-known that our government itself as well as all our social interests are put in jeopardy by the ignorant citizen who becomes a voter4 ,that the constitutional duty of the ,president to execute the laws1 and of ,congress to provide for the safety of the ,republic involved the right to levy war against states1 to blockade their harbors1 to emancipate their slaves1 to dictate the ,constitutions under which they could resume their autonomy as ,states in the union1 this was recognized only in face of fearful dangers and admitted only when established on many bloody fields of a desolating war1 but is now so familiar1 so axiomatic that no one doubts the nation's right to defend its own life by all means which do not of themselves subvert that life4 ,that the safety of the ,republic requires a general diffusion of intelligence no sane man will deny1 and yet some assert that it will subvert the fundamental principles of this government if it practically secured this prime condition of its own life--that it must delegate to other hands the control of conditions and facts vital to its life1 with no power or right to enforce attention to them4 ,the right and capacity of self-government are found only in the virtue and intelligence of the people4 ,if this be so1 the obligation of a free government to enforce the education of its citizens is involved in its right to live4 ,this obligation is recognized1 or should be1 in the constitutional guarantee of a ,republican form of government to each ,state1 for the guarantee of such a form of government carries with it the conditions essential to it1 one of which1 and a prime one1 is the intelligence of the citizen4 ,this cannot be secured by the military arm of the nation1 but by the school-master alone1 who thus becomes a constitutional officer of the republic4 ,the proposition that a republican form of government may be maintained by force over a people too ignorant to maintain it for themselves is too absurd for serious debate4 ,the right of the national government to interfere in case a ,state neglects the education of its children1 seems clear on the ground of self-protection4 ,the duty to aid the ,states struggling to accomplish this work1 but unable to do it1 because of its vastness1 and of its own poverty1 seems also clear1 and has now become urgent in view of the appalling facts revealed in the last census4 ,our national ,congress is constrained to hear the cry that is coming up from all parts of the country calling attention to this duty4 ,let not those who feel an interest in this1 relax effort or lose heart4 ,it is not a measure to be adopted in a moment4 ,it means much2 it involves much4 ,it will bring with it new and seemingly revolutionary conceptions of the functions of the government when it reaches out its strong arms to defend its life1 not in the sad work of shooting down ignorant and brutalized parricides1 but in the better work of helping to qualify for their children1 who are to be charged with duties1 the gravest which fall to men1 and for positions the highest to each week of the regular course4 ,with strict economy and working all vacations1 they maintain themselves through the entire course graduating without receiving a dollar in charity1 some1 however1 need help the last year and none are more worthy of it4 ,the effect on their characters is excellent4 ,good as it is1 that they shall earn and learn in this way1 it is even better for the habits1 hogs and pigs1 #aaj sheep and lambs1 #f colts1 and from #aj to #bj beef cattle1 which are bought in the neighborhood1 fattened on the pasture and killed at the school1 two or three a week being famous1 but plain1 old ,southern mansion1 in which ,gen4 ,washington once dined4 ,until #ahgh it had been for many generations in the hands of an old aristocratic family1 whom the war impoverished1 and their place was sold for debt4 ,the location is a beautiful one2 the region is quite ,englishlike in appearance1 with its rich1 level fields and its hedge-rows4 ,in summer1 delicious breezes blow up the river from ,chesapeake ,bay1 four miles distant4 ,oysters and fish abound in its water front2 a handsome lawn and fine old trees surround the house1 all of which are a delight to the boys1 especially to the ,indians1 who have long summer mornings4 ,the past season a plain but pretty cottage was added to the old house1 which was too small1 containing a dining-room1 kitchen1 laundry1 and bedrooms for the boys upstairs4 ,this leaves rooms1 as was intended by the giver1 for tired teachers to come and rest for a night from the cares and din of the institute1 to whom the quiet and beauty of 8,shellbanks10 its former name1 is a great comfort4 ,i must not forget to mention the ample barn1 stable1 cow-shed1 tool-house1 corn-crib1 extensive stacks of straw1 and wind-mill for pumping water ,hampton system is more satisfactory than this farm4 ,i hope others like it will be provided for other institutions1 but to fit up an old ,southern farm after buying it1 costs about as much as the land costs4 ,an unexpected advantage of the farm is its being an excellent place for a badly-behaved ,indian boy1 when only one is sent there4 ,he is punished by being separated from his old friends1 but the ten colored fellows carry him along in their daily routine of work and study2 he has no one to 8cut up0 with2 he improves in spite of himself2 the plan has never failed to work well2 he our special religious meetings the first of ,january in connection with the 8,week of ,prayer40 ,but this year the ,church seemed in readiness at an earlier date1 and we felt that we were obeying the call of the ,lord to 8go forward0 when we began our special effort to reach the impenitent1 on the night of ,december #ast4 ,the ,friday preceding had been observed as a day of fasting and prayer4 ,for many days the spirit of prayer and consecration had been evidently deepening upon the part of the great majority of the ,lord's people4 ,people who1 for some trivial reason1 had been alienated1 came together in the spirit of forgiveness4 ,a great desire was expressed1 and ,i have no doubt felt1 to prepare the way for the coming of the ,lord4 ,our lady missionary with unsurpassed devotion1 visited all the families of the congregation1 making in the short space of ten weeks some #fjj visits4 ,the effort was made to reach every one who sustained even a nominal relation to our church1 as a member or casual attendant1 and invite him to our revival services4 ,the result was all and more than we anticipated4 ,the church was thronged every night4 ,the very first night several presented themselves for prayer4 ,the number of inquirers increased till we counted more than fifty4 ,one by one1 with a quietness and depth of feeling that impressed every heart1 these earnest inquirers came into the light1 and were made to 8rejoice in hope of the glory of ,god40 ,the two manly and dearly beloved sons of the ,dean of our ,faculty1 were among the first to share in the blessings of the revival4 ,god only knows our joy when they came forward with the rest1 and bowed before ,god as suppliants for ,his mercy and forgiveness4 ,never did the words of ,holy ,writ1 which have fallen from the lips of so many believers1 sound sweeter than when one of these young men recited as his verse at the breakfast table1 the morning after his conversion1 8,i know that my ,redeemer liveth40 ,a pleasant and somewhat unusual feature of this revival has been its influence upon the men4 ,on more than one occasion we counted twelve men on the 8,mourners' seats40 ,thirty-four professed conversion4 ,we hope and believe they have been 8born again40 ,a class of #ce are waiting in joyful anticipation of taking the vows of ,god upon them in the ,church1 and of receiving their 8first communion40 ,i should do injustice to my own feelings did ,i not speak of the earnest sympathy and hearty co-operation of all the teachers in the ,university in this religious movement4 ,we moved in ,the revival which has been in progress for several weeks at ,central ,church has been to me a constant wonder4 ,even in sedate old ,connecticut a revival season is usually a scene of much emotional excitement1 and it is often impossible to tell how much is sincere and permanent2 but this revival has been all through marked by a quiet1 deep and reverential character4 ,it was my first opportunity for observation of such meetings among the colored people4 ,i had heard and read a great deal of the tumultuous excitement on such occasions1 and each night ,i looked to see1 when they should be fairly 8warmed up10 such scenes as ,i had had pictured4 ,what ,i actually did see was this4 ,each night the pastor preached a short1 practical gospel sermon1 packed full with reasons why religion should be chosen and chosen now1 to an earnest1 attentive audience4 ,then he stepped down in front1 and in kind but strong words invited all who felt the truth of what had been said and wished to become ,christians1 to come forward for conversation and the prayers of the church4 ,most of those who accepted the invitation were men of middle age and young men2 a few were young ladies4 ,night after night this went on2 while the pastor and others were talking with those who came forward1 the audience engaged in singing4 ,no general invitation was given to speak or pray1 a few only being called on each night to take part4 ,each night some souls found peace and joy4 ,it was my good fortune to talk with nearly every one of the converts1 and ,i found all1 so far as ,i could judge1 thoroughly in earnest2 no one scared or urged into confessions1 but each1 as the new hope was born in his soul1 rising1 generally with streaming eyes1 to tell what ,god had done for him and ask for under very favorable auspices4 ,we have had #ib pupils enrolled4 ,our school is the only one for colored children within a radius of #fe miles4 ,we are giving some attention to church work1 and are using our school-house as a place of worship4 ,we have service every ,sabbath morning at eleven o'clock--the audiences are large4 ,we are gratified to say that the influence of the teachers takes fast hold upon both parent and pupil4 ,we have ,sunday-school every afternoon at three o'clock1 and these services are largely attended4 ,thanksgiving day was appropriately commemorated4 ,a sermon was preached in the morning by the missionary pastor4 ,all who were present seemed deeply impressed with the word4 ,the chapel was beautifully and tastefully festooned with autumn leaves and berries1 and the walls were embellished with appropriate mottoes of the sacred ,scriptures4 ,at seven o'clock in the evening a very large number of patrons and friends of the school gathered1 and partook of a repast prepared as a thanksgiving token for them by the teachers and pupils4 ,toasts were responded to by the several pastors of the town and teachers4 ,i said we had service in our chapel at #aa ,a4,m4 every ,sunday4 ,we could induce as many to come in the evening if we had lamps to light up our chapel4 ,equally as good results would come from a weekly prayer-meeting1 if we had sufficient lights4 ,we heartily accept this opportunity of asking the friends of some of our ,northern churches to give us of their old ones--chandelier lamps4 ,the ,lord's ,supper was celebrated the first time1 since beginning our work here1 last ,sunday4 ,truly1 the ,lord was with his people on that solemn occasion4 ,at this service the missionary pastor's first and only little daughter was baptized1 which increased the interest of the meeting4 ,to carry this blessed ,supper to ,christ's brethren and sisters1 ,mrs4 ,foster's pie-pans were used for the emblems of his body1 and two borrowed mugs for the emblem of his blood4 ,from this the friends of ,god's poor will see we would thank them very much to assist us in getting a communion set4 ,the people among whom we are working are very poor4 ,few of quarter1 more than #dej have1 for a longer or shorter period1 been members of our ,sacramento school4 ,i would that all who come with us in the school could remain until they are converted and ready while in ,china3 he has not ceased to labor for ,christ since his return2 ,fong ,gee1 whose father1 now dead1 was a heathen priest1 was always zealous while here with us2 sometimes speaking to his country-men for an hour or more at a time1 showing them1 in the most ridiculous light1 the folly of idol and ancestral worship1 and holding up ,christ as the only hope of salvation4 ,his health gave out1 and he was compelled to return to ,china--being helped by the brethren of ,san ,francisco and ,sacramento to do so4 ,there he is working at his trade for a mere pittance1 and giving what time he can for the conversion of his country-men4 ,wong ,loung visited his home a year ago1 and was married1 in accordance with ,chinese customs1 to one to whom he had been betrothed in childhood by his parents4 ,because he had renounced the religion of his fathers1 he suffered much indignity from members of his family--the persecutions becoming so great he was obliged to leave home4 ,but the result was that he returned to ,america more determined than ever to hold fast to ,christ4 ,louis ,sing1 too1 was under great pressure while in ,china to take part in worship with his relations1 but could not1 he said1 because he knew the uselessness of such worship4 ,we hear of ,gwan ,lee1 our organist1 as standing firm amidst the powers of darkness--holding fast to the living faith4 ,he is one of those whom the present law prohibits from returning to this country4 ,we all feel as though we could not give him up1 and that some way must be found by which he may come back4 8,we are not only made glad by work done far away1 but workers are here with us--true hearts that love to do something for ,jesus every day4 ,several have joined the ,association this year2 among them1 ,fong ,bow1 who is be the followers of the ,lord ,jesus1 and to be workers in the ,master's field4 ,i will mention a few things of the heathen prayers1 which were occasionally offered to the heathen gods in ,china as well as in this city4 ,so far as ,i can judge there is no true prayer which was ever offered to their gods1 and ,i1 having been born in a heathen nation1 therefore know them well4 ,each certain prayer belongs to a certain god4 ,you cannot take one god's prayer to pray to others2 if you do1 you will get no blessing1 because you got the wrong prayer1 their prayers not having to come from the heart1 but being learned only from the history of a certain god1 so they mostly repeat the words as near as they can remember4 ,there is not a single prayer that really comes from the heart4 ,they come only from the lips2 and besides this1 when they pray1 they do not1 like our ,christian people1 pray for bad and good1 and even for our enemies1 and for all nations2 their prayers are only for a certain thing1 a certain matter1 for riches1 for honors1 and for glory1 and to have more sons born than girls2 for their father and mother1 brothers and sisters1 that they might have a long life4 ,if they have any one which they do not like1 they would pray their ,god to destroy his whole family4 ,by this we know that such a prayer our true ,god will not hear1 but rather punish them4 ,i have a great bed until afternoon4 ,then you got up1 thinking that was too late1 and would not go4 ,this1 indeed1 would make you think that ,god did not hear your prayer last night4 ,this is the whole trouble that sometimes ,god don't answer our prayer2 but ,i am very sure that ,god has heard all my prayers and has answered all which are for good4 ,when we have a certain matter that we cannot manage at all1 and when we would bring it to ,god1 we must first make our hearts ready to pray and then without doubting draw out the true thoughts of our hearts and feel that ,god is above us and ,jesus is on one side4 ,then comes the ,holy ,spirit into our hearts to teach us how to pray4 ,after we got up from prayer ,i am sure we can feel that we were heard1 and if we are not answered on a certain hour we must wait and pray without ceasing until it comes1 for ,god not1 like man1 would fail you sometime4 ,this is the kind of prayer that ,god does hear4 ,so ,james says1 8,the effectual1 fervent prayer of a
