fashioned an image of snow1 ,fashioned the form of a tribesman--gaily he whistled and sung1 ,working the snow with his fingers4 ,read ye the ,story of ,ung6 ,pleased was his tribe with that image--came in their hundreds to scan-- ,handled it1 smelt it1 and grunted3 8,verily1 this is a man6 8,thus do we carry our lances--thus is a war belt slung1 8,lo6 it is even as we are4 ,glory and honor to ,ung60 44444444444444444444444 ,straight on the glittering ice-field1 by the caves of the lost ,dordogne1 ,ung1 a maker of pictures1 fell to his scriving on bone-- ,even to mammoth editions4444 7,,kipling7 ,the art of the cartoonist was flourishing in the palaeolithic age1 about fifty thousand years ago4 ,in the caves of ,dordogne1 in ,southern ,france1 the early artist scraped and scratched his figures of reindeers and mammoths1 and colored them in red1 white and black4 ,he was a magic worker1 using his remarkable art to impress his less skilled brother4 ,the caricaturist belongs to a much later period2 but he1 too1 was in evidence in ,greece during the days of ,aristophanes1 a century or two before the artistic genius of the ,maya race carved and modelled their quaint1 grotesque figures of men and animals4 ,that the art of caricature is an ancient one in ,mexico we have abundant evidence4 ,the artist usually worked in clay1 but he also made drawings with pointed obsidian knives or charcoal on stone4 ,representations of his art craft can be seen in many of the ancient codices4 ,in ,padre ,sahagun's illustrations 7the ,florentine ,codex7 we find many whimsical and fantastic sketches1 grim with sardonic humor4 ,except here and there1 on rare occasions1 the art of caricature which flourished in ,europe during the ,spanish ,colonial period1 was dormant in ,mexico4 ,in the ,codex of ,san ,juan ,teotihuacan1 which dates from the middle of the sixteenth century1 we see the ,indian artist caricaturing the portly ,augustinian friars1 and revealing with tragic earnestness the suffering of the poor natives whom the monks compelled to build their beautiful churches to the 8,glory of ,god40 ,but the art of satirical expression can only be developed when some degree of freedom obtains4 ,under ,spanish rule and the rigid jurisdiction of the ,inquisition no freedom of thought was possible4 ,with the changed conditions brought about by the separation of ,new ,spain from the mother country there was liberty enough--and even license--for the caricaturist1 which he used with biting satire against the ever-changing political heroes4 ,to-day1 the political cartoonist in ,mexico is a powerful factor in moulding public opinion against influential persons4 ,since the fall of ,porfirio ,diaz the daily and weekly journals have been enlivened by the cartoons of a brilliant group of young men--foremost and leader of them all is ,ernesto ,garcia ,cabral1 the fertile genius who has daily depicted and delineated every phase of ,mexican life and politics4 ,cabral1 who is quite young1 was born in the year #ahia1 in ,huatusco1 a picturesque village in the ,state of ,veracruz4 ,as a child of three or four years he amused himself by tracing figures on the ground and before the age of fourteen he delineated figures of animals and saints on the walls of the village church4 ,at that time he also discovered his future artistic bent in making profile caricatures of his younger brothers and school-fellows4 ,his school teacher1 early recognizing the ability of the boy in draughtsmanship1 persuaded the 8,jefe ,politico0 of the district to solicit a scholarship from ,seor ,don ,teodoro ,dehesa1 the enlightened ,governor of the ,state4 ,seor ,dehesa1 a patron of art1 who frequently acted as a ,maecenas to struggling artists1 granted the young ,ernesto the coveted bursary which entitled him to enter the ,san ,carlos ,academy in the ,capital of the ,republic4 ,there he was able to improve his technique1 but the scholarship did not make him independent4 ,to live and continue his studies it was necessary for him to earn money4 ,he therefore commenced to draw for the public1 collaborating in the publication of a lithographed political paper called 8,la ,tarantula40 ,in this paper1 directed by ,fortunato ,herreras1 he dedicated himself exclusively to the art of caricature4 ,at the end of six months he joined the staff of the short-lived comic weekly 8,frivolidades0 which soon had to stop publication for want of funds4 ,the next important step in ,cabral's career was his collaboration with ,mario ,vitoria1 in the well-known political weekly 8,multicolor0 and through the medium of this paper his drawings became known to a wider and more influential circle4 8,multicolor0 had great political influence during the three years it was published 7#aiaa-aiad71 and helped very powerfully towards the making and unmaking of the political idols of the hour4 ,it was during this period that the brilliant young artist came to the notice of ,president ,madero1 who decided to send him to ,paris to continue his studies at the expense of the ,mexican ,government4 ,cabral settled in ,paris in #aiab and pursued his studies at the free academies of ,colorossi and the ,grande ,chaumire4 ,cabral's native land was soon afterwards passing through the agonies of revolution and the tragic death of ,madero left the artist penniless1 as the new ,government stopped all the bursaries of ,mexican students then studying under official patronage in ,europe4 ,deprived of all means of subsistence1 ,cabral1 as he once told the present writer1 was1 for a time1 actually starving4 ,some amelioration came to him as the result of winning a competition inaugurated by an official ,academy of ,painting at ,no4 #hj ,boulevard ,montparnasse1 the prize being free admission to the upper class of drawing from the nude4 ,the competitors1 who were fifteen in number1 were required to make in five hours--one hour a night--a crayon drawing of a ,greek statue4 ,the starving artist's success1 ironically enough1 was communicated by the ,mexican ,consul in ,paris1 to the ,minister of ,public ,instruction and ,fine ,arts in ,mexico1 and the local press made ,cabral the subject of flattering comment4 ,cabral was then able to continue his studies without expense1 but was compelled at the same time to struggle gallantly for a pittance1 by selling the productions of his pencil through the 8,marchand de ,tableaux0--and shortly afterwards he was taken on the staffs of 8,le ,rire0 and 8,bayonette40 ,when the ,great ,war broke out1 ,cabral was again in difficulties4 ,paris cared only for her own cartoonists1 and it was then that he lived the bohemian life of the ,latin ,quarter--that centre of cardiac energy--described so graphically by ,du ,maurier and ,murger1 with the usual companionship of a sweet1 pious and self-sacrificing blonde 8,midinette0 who shared the dark days of his misery4 ,at that time1 he has told us1 he was in the habit of casting lots with his bohemian companions1 to see who would procure sufficient funds for the satisfying of their ravenous stomachs--a motley lot of comrades in adversity1 including would-be painters1 musicians1 poets and journalists4 ,garcia ,cabral had1 on more than one occasion1 the experience of resorting to extraordinary stratagems to obtain sufficient food for their wants4 ,during #aiah1 when the ,constitutional ,government of ,mexico was presided over by ,don ,venustiano ,carranza1 there was residing in ,paris as the special envoy of the ,president1 ,lic4 ,isidoro ,fabela1 and under ,sr4 ,fabela's generous protection ,cabral was appointed an ,attach in the ,mexican ,legation1 his duties being the pleasant task of illustrating a book of narratives which ,seor ,fabela was intending to publish4 ,shortly afterwards1 he accompanied ,seor ,fabela on his official missions to ,madrid and ,buenos ,ayres and in the ,argentine capital they stayed fifteen months4 ,there1 in the interest of a ,mexican national propaganda1 ,cabral contributed his cartoons to the principal newspapers and reviews1 achieving a very considerable reputation in the ,argentine4 ,in the beginning of #aiai1 after an exile of seven years1 ,cabral returned to his native land and his work immediately began to appear in the weekly 8,revista de ,revistas0 and in the influential daily newspaper 8,excelsior40 ,since that time his career has been one of unbroken success and of extraordinary popularity4 ,cabral's amazing drawings are worthy of taking rank with those of the most distinguished foreign cartoonists4 ,he can1 with equal facility1 produce the most humorous of cartoons or the most satirical of caricatures4 ,in his cartoons of representative people1 he seems to extract by critical penetration--sympathetically--the quintessential expression of his subject4 ,he is always an artist1 a consummate designer and a psychological observer who analytically peers into the minds of men and lays bare their personalities4 ,his art is versatile4 ,in line1 he excels as no other ,mexican artist2 but he is also a master of chiaroscuro1 and as an illustrator his understanding of the massing of color is extraordinary4 ,during the past three or four years1 ,cabral must have produced several thousand cartoons and caricatures4 ,his cartoons of representative people in ,mexico have been drawn mostly from life1 each sketched rapidly and surely in a little over half an hour4 ,his political1 social and topical cartoons form a kaleidoscopic history of contemporary ,mexico4 ,a great political question1 such as the official ,american recognition of ,president ,obregon's ,government1 finds ,cabral sympathetically interpreting the international aspirations of the ,mexican people4 ,the danger of ,bolshevism in the ,state of ,veracruz becomes a subject for many convincing cartoons1 of more influence than dozens of leading articles4 ,mexico ,city1 due to an exceptional drought1 is called upon to economize in its use of electric energy and daylight-saving is officially established for a time4 ,cabral1 during the crisis1 daily illustrates the necessity4 ,he wages war upon incompetent medical men1 portrays the risk the pedestrian takes on the crowded streets of the ,capital1 the evil effects of unlawful strikes1 and so on2--every phase in the everchanging life of the ,capital is eloquently depicted4 ,in some of his cartoons of persons he subordinates caricature in favor of true portraiture1 and in others1 the kindly sympathetic personality of the artist changes rapidly into the satirist and cynical student of life with an ineradicable memory of its shams and miseries4 ,for the selection of the cartoons reproduced in this book the writer is responsible2 it does not profess to represent ,cabral's best work1 and he himself would probably have chosen quite differently from the thousands he has done4 ,the cartoons have suffered by reduction and reproduction1 as the majority of them have been copied direct from the 8,excelsior40 ,nos4 ,i41 ,,xvii-,,xxiv and ,,xxv1 were reproduced from the original drawings4 ,the writer's apology for a selection that may not represent the best of the artist's work is due to the cartoonist1 as those reproduced have been selected on account of their personal appeal to the friends for whom this limited edition is intended4 ,cabral hopes1 at an early date1 to publish a representative collection of his work--which all lovers of his art will joyfully welcome4 ,a critical study of the ,mexican cartoonist's genius will some day be attempted4 ,this little book does not pretend to be anything more than an appreciation by an admirer1 who lacks the critical and artistic knowledge to determine ,cabral's true place among cartoonists in ,mexico and abroad4 ,g4 ,r4 ,g4 ,,conway4 ,caption for following illustration3 ,i4 ,,ernesto
