,glen ,canyon ,dam1 ,powerplant1 and ,reservoir1 which will be known as ,lake ,powell in honor of the western explorer and geologist1 ,john ,wesley ,powell1 are the principal storage and power features of the ,upper ,colorado ,river ,storage project4 ,the dam will be on the ,colorado ,river in ,arizona1 #ac river miles below the ,utah border4 ,lake ,powell will store about #bh1jjj1jjj acre feet of water--next in size to ,lake ,mead1 downstream1 ,america's largest man-made lake--to help solve a water resource development problem in the ,colorado ,river ,basin4 ,the crux of the problem is the division of the river's water between the ,upper and ,lower ,basins of the ,colorado ,river1 as provided by an interstate compact4 ,the volume of water flowing down the ,colorado fluctuates sharply from year to year4 ,consequently1 there must be long-term holdover storage capacity in order to meet downstream needs and compact requirements--including requirements for ,mexico under an international treaty--and still permit the ,upper ,basin ,states to deplete the river for upstream use4 ,this problem will be solved by construction of a system of storage dams and reservoirs in the ,upper ,basin1 of which ,glen ,canyon1 the largest1 is one of four initial units authorized4 ,only #ae miles above the dividing line between the ,upper and ,lower ,basins1 it will store no water for use upstream or in the immediate vicinity of the dam1 but is the principal unit storing water to regulate the river and thereby fulfill compact commitments to the ,lower ,basin4 ,the sale of hydroelectric energy generated at the multipurpose dams will return practically all of the cost of the project and a large part of the cost of #aa participating irrigation projects authorized for initial ,upper ,basin development4 ,that1 in general1 is how ,glen ,canyon ,dam on the ,colorado and three other initial dams on its tributaries will aid in developing the area4 ,the participating projects just referred to1 and scattered throughout the ,upper ,basin 7#aa of them authorized for construction71 will irrigate about #acj1jjj acres in new farms and improve irrigation on about #bcj1jjj acres in old ones4 ,some #be other projects are under various phases of study4 ,farming1 in consequence1 will greatly increase4 ,water from the #d big storage reservoirs will1 as planned1 turn generators of about #a1bjj1jjj-kilowatt capacity1 and industry will use the power4 ,mineral deposits of inestimable value1 uranium among them1 will be mined4 ,flood control and navigation on the ,colorado will be improved1 and the nation's playgrounds will be greatly enlarged1 for some of the world's finest recreation places will lie along the shores of the reservoirs or lakes that will form behind the dams4 ,glen ,canyon ,storage ,unit will be the keystone in this whole structure4 ,the dam spans the river near its exit from the ,upper ,basin1 as if in the spout of a great funnel where it can control all of the water in the funnel's cone--the ,colorado's own flow and all that its tributaries feed into it upstream from the dam4 ,the powerplant will generate about #ge percent of the project's total power and the reservoir will contribute about #ge percent of the water storage that the ,congress authorized in #aief as initial development for the ,upper ,basin4 ,this reservoir or lake1 extending #ahf miles behind the dam1 will be flanked by remarkably beautiful scenery4 ,the ,nation's gain in new public and private wealth will be tremendous4 ,the ,federal ,government will finance the project1 but the people who use the water and power will repay about #ii percent of the cost--about two-thirds with interest4 ,,bridge ,,at ,,the ,,damsite ,illustration3 ,bridge ,bridges bridge in the ,united ,states2 its #a1jbh foot arch stands #gjj feet above the river4 ,the deck is #a1bga feet long4 ,the roadway is #cj feet wide and is paralleled by #d-;foot sidewalks4 ,the bridge was dedicated and opened to public use on ,february #bj1 #aiei4 ,materials and equipment are transported to the canyon floor by highlines--heavy cableways stretched between towers1 two on each rim4 ,april #bi1 #aieg4 ,it provides for construction of the dam and powerhouse and is the largest single contract the ,bureau has ever awarded and probably the largest for any type of construction project4 ,by ,june #aifj1 the contractor had completed the diversion and spillway tunnels1 lined them with concrete1 built the coffer dams 7temporary earth structures diverting the river around the damsite during construction71 and excavated the foundation of the dam4 ,first placement of concrete in the foundation of the dam and powerhouse was observed by public ceremonies at the damsite on ,,plant ,q4 ,why is the refrigeration plant necessary8 ,a4 ,a large amount of heat is produced by the chemical action of cement during the setting of the concrete4 ,the heat must be removed to prevent expansion and cracking of the concrete4 ,the refrigeration plant supplies the slush ice and cold water necessary to reduce this heat4 ,q4 ,how is the heat controlled8 ,a4 ,first1 the aggregate is sprayed with ice water before going into the mixers4 ,second1 slush ice1 along with water1 is used in mixing the concrete4 ,third1 cold water is pumped through pipes embedded in the concrete to carry away the heat generated4 ,q4 ,how long will cold water have to be pumped through the cooling tubes in the dam8 ,a4 ,approximately #ab days immediately following placement of the concrete to prevent uncontrolled cracking4 ,then for about #eb days in the second stage1 which may be many months later and which is for the purpose of assuring uniform shrinking of the huge concrete blocks4 ,,concrete ,,blocks ,q4 ,how large are the blocks of concrete placed in the dam8 ,a4 ,they vary in size4 ,the largest are #gj feet by #ahj feet in area2 all blocks will be #g feet thick4 ,q4 ,why are blocks used rather than building the dam as one solid piece8 ,a4 ,primarily1 block placement facilitates cooling of the concrete and controls cracking due to contraction of the concrete4 ,after the blocks have set and cooled1 a mixture of cement and water 7called grout7 is pumped under high pressure into cracks between the blocks to form one solid mass of concrete4 ,,page1 ,,arizona ,,general ,q4 ,after
