,i must conform to the usual order of things and apologise for being on earth1 but at the same time ,i am very grateful2 and1 feeling so kindly disposed to ,,father ,,time1 ,i have ventured in verse to extol his praises1 and1 with the kindly help of my artist1 ,i have boldly put before the public a work that has entailed considerable labour and expense4 ,if1 then1 any critic--confident in his or her powers of being able to compile a work vastly superior in every detail to the one which ,i have supreme pleasure in now placing before the public--should like to enter the lists and vie with my humble efforts1 ,i will gladly forgive all criticism1 and congratulate myself on having been instrumental in securing for ,,father ,,time a fresh devotee2 and ,i will offer up my humble prayers that he or she may prove to be a far more worthy servant than myself4 ,but1 apart from all levity1 let me here simply testify to the onerous nature of my self-imposed task1 and express the hope that my untutored efforts may in part1 if not in whole1 be appreciated by a few generous natures who1 being themselves unable to devote time to the compilation of such a work1 yet are grateful for this contribution 7no matter how faulty7 to what has ever been a most pleasing and engrossing subject4 ,he would1 indeed1 be a mean man who1 having received considerable assistance in any undertaking1 failed to acknowledge such on the first opportunity2 and ,i have the greatest pleasure in here testifying to the untiring efforts of my artist1 ,miss ,d4 ,hartley1 who has contributed so largely to my work2 indeed1 ,i am sure that1 without her talent1 ,i should receive but poor commendation from the general public4 ,all the sundials that figure in this work are dials that actually exist1 and although the settings are new1 yet it is to be hoped that this will in no wise detract from the value of the book4 ,so many ancient dials are to-day continually changing hands and being placed in new surroundings1 that although cognisant of the fact that it would be far more interesting to illustrate my work with sketches showing the dial in its original position1 yet in the majority of cases ,i have proved this to be impossible4 ,i have1 therefore1 decided1 whilst representing faithfully the actual dials1 to adopt quite new lines1 and to illustrate my work with a series of sketches in keeping with the age of each horologe1 and also to supplying a series of pictures calculated to suit the style and nature of my book4 ,before referring to my poetical efforts1 ,i will here thank all those friends who have so kindly assisted me in my arduous undertaking4 ,principally1 ,i am indebted to the kindness and generosity of ,mr4 ,francis ,barker1 of ,clerkenwell1 for his most valuable and interesting chapter upon the setting of the sundial1 and also for the loan of numerous photographs and illustrations of various dials and gnomons4 ,mr4 ,barker's kindly help and interest has more than encouraged me in my undertaking1 and his wide and valuable knowledge on gnomonics is well known4 ,my most sincere thanks are also due to the following firms who have so very kindly assisted me by permitting me to use in my book some beautiful illustrations of sundials designed and made for existing and future gardens3--,messrs4 ,john ,p4 ,white1 ,messrs4 ,pulham1 ,messrs4 ,joseph ,cheal ,son1 ,messrs4 ,william ,wood ,son1 ,messrs4 ,knowltons1 ,messrs4 ,h4 ,w4 ,cashmore ,co4 ,it is not possible to mention the names of all those who have so kindly assisted me in securing photographs of dials1 or who have furnished me from time to time with any required information2 ,i will1 therefore1 but express my great gratitude for every kindness1 and venture to hope that my book will meet with the approval of all4 ,if any reader finds it incumbent upon him to criticise adversely my verses or mottoes1 let me here plead a generous consideration4 ,,six ,,hundred ,,verses on one subject is a very big effort at any time1 but how much more so when each verse is intended of itself to be a separate poem4 ,also1 nearly all these verses have been written under the most trying conditions--during the stress of arduous undertakings1 and hours devoid of comfort and surroundings congenial to a work of this description4 ,if1 then1 any verse or verses appear to be weak1 let the reader remember that there has been no picking and choosing2 for ,i have boldly published all that ,i have written1 well knowing that no two people see alike1 and that what may displease one may also find favour with another4 ,let1 then1 those verses which do commend themselves to the reader be in his or her eyes sufficient warranty for my book4 ,t4 ,g4 ,w4 ,h4 ,the ,history of the ,sundial4 ,,chapter ,i4 ,who shall discover the age of the sundial1 or fix with certainty the year in which ye horologe was first invented to record the passing of the day or perchance the hour8 ,the archives of time will never reveal to us the first dial that was invented to aid mortal man to regulate his life and so fulfil his daily task4 ,we can only at the best surmise what the date may have been1 and record existing information for the benefit of posterity1 trusting that new discoveries may throw fresh light upon this most engrossing subject4 ,to the student of astronomy and mathematics1 it will ever appear to be a most natural event that the sundial should have been constructed to record accurately the time of day2 and such might doubtless express surprise that the age of the earliest known horologe is not of greater antiquity4 ,but it must not be forgotten that the requirements of early man were small1 and time1 although a most important consideration1 was not of the same value that it is to-day1 in the highly civilised age in which we live4 ,it is not my intention to give a long and detailed account of the sundial1 for ,i must confess that ,i am not sufficiently versed in its chequered and varied history2 but1 nevertheless1 ,i feel bound to include in my book one or more chapters that shall supply a little information upon the age1 development1 and construction of ye horologe4 ,but here ,i am at a loss to know where to start1 for if ,i should deal with the ,babylonian1 ,egyptian1 ,greek1 or ,roman ages1 doubtless ,i should be ruled out of court1 for a wise critic would question the lateness of my starting point1 and would prove conclusively that ,i ought to have begun with ,adam1 who could not have missed the opportunity afforded him of erecting a sundial in the ,garden of ,eden4 ,indeed1 so hard is it to fix a date for the earliest introduction of the sundial in its most primitive form1 that we can only allude with safety to its mention in ancient writings and its discovery in various countries through different ages4 ,without doubt the ,bible gives us the oldest records1 and we may be sure that wherever we get even the briefest allusion to the division of time1 we can assert the existence of a horologe with little hesitation4 ,job 7vii4 #b7 alludes to the monitor in the words--8as a servant earnestly desireth the shadow10 and the miracle of the sundial of ,ahaz has been quoted and handed down for centuries4 ,sundials exist in most countries in various forms1 differing in construction according to the knowledge of the age in astronomy and mathematics1 and showing clearly at different periods in the history of a race the outside influence of the greater wisdom attained to by many students in the art of horology4 ,if we devote considerable attention to the history of sundials we almost unconsciously find ourselves dividing them into the following groups3--,wall dials1 pedestal dials1 and portable dials4 ,without doubt it will never be surely solved as to which is the older of the first two1 for who can ever know the resources of primitive man1 the knowledge of the ancients1 or the earliest discoveries of the wandering tribes of the ,east8 ,how little we really know of ancient ,china or ,japan1 where sundials abound4 ,when the history of the horologe of the ,west still remains imperfect1 who will determine that of the ,east8 ,let us solve the riddle of ,avebury or ,stonehenge with certainty before we can decide the age of any other likely form of horologe2 let us move the sands of the desert of ,egypt and dig down into every ruin of the past before we can hope to fix a date at which mortal man constructed a dial1 mural or pedestal1 to record the passing of the day4 ,although priority in the age of the first two groups of dials may remain an uncertainty1 yet the third group of portable dials can be safely given a late date4 ,by portable dials ,i would not have my readers include the tent pole often used by wandering ,arabs to cast a shadow1 or the possible use of a stone of any size by early man1 but the host of small pocket and ring dials made of metal1 ivory1 wood1 or stone that are frequently found in our own land1 on the ,continent1 and in the ,east4 ,there is no more engrossing study than the age of the sundial1 and to those interested in gnomonics any fresh information or unrecorded history is of the greatest importance4 ,it is1 however1 left to the excavator of buried cities and ancient ruins of the past to shed fresh light upon such a well-worn subject1 and the humble historian but faithfully records and hands down to posterity the result of his discoveries4 ,the minutes of to-day are as the hours of yesterday1 and the necessity of an accurate time-keeper is in this present century more keenly felt than ever it was in the past4 ,a glance at the sky to determine the position of the sun in respect to well-known landmarks may have sufficed the races of primitive man1 but as generation succeeded generation1 and regular business occupations and more home life commenced1 the observance of stated intervals of the day must have become a necessity2 so that1 if the old proverb be true1 necessity became the mother of invention1 and in due course gave birth to the sundial1 which1 as time went on1 developed until it reached the perfect stage in which we find it to-day4 ,perhaps some day excavations in the ,holy ,land will reveal fresh forms of horologe that will put into the shade the age of the present dials from ancient ,greece1 but until then we have little data other than vague allusions to them in the historical records of the past to go upon4 ,it is very doubtful whether ancient ,egypt with all its vast learning and resources will ever throw fresh light upon the subject of gnomonics4 ,situated so close to the ,equator1 both the horizontal and vertical dials would be of small service4 ,the angle of the gnomon being equal to the latitude of the place1 the few degrees either side of the ,equator would necessitate such a small elevation that a horizontal dial would be of little help4 ,again1 a vertical dial would show the time for only a very short portion of the year1 since the dial plate would have to be almost parallel with the rays of the sun4 ,still1 doubtless1 records may yet be found that will testify to its existence1 if not in ancient ,egypt1 in lands that felt ,egyptian influence and benefited by their learning and wisdom4 ,theories are problematical and surmises are often without foundation1 but ,i would indeed venture to think that it is more than possible that the sundial played some part in the rectification of the ,babylonian calendar in #gdg ,b4,c41 which took place about nineteen years before the accession of ,king ,ahaz1 in whose reign it was clearly alluded to4 ,the oldest known dials at present are those of ,grecian origin1 and for the most part are of the hemicyclean form invented by the ,chaldean ,berosus1 who lived about #cdj ,b4,c41 and his particular shape and construction of dial was in use for centuries4 ,four of these sundials were discovered in ,italy3 one at ,tivoli in #agdf1 another at ,castel ,nuovo in #agea1 another at ,rignano in #agea1 and the fourth at ,pompeii in #agfb4 ,it is thus evident that this form of sundial which was used by the ,arabians 7who gave great study to gnomonics7 was popular also amongst the ,romans4 ,an interesting specimen of this form of horologe1 which can now be seen in the ,british ,museum1 was found at the base of ,cleopatra's ,needle in #aheb4 ,this dial is concave1 and is made from a stone #af inches high by #ag inches wide1 the depth of the bowl being #aj inches2 the hours marked are the twelve unequal hours by which the ,greeks divided up their day4 ,this dial--by no means satisfactory--doubtless owed much of its popularity to its novel construction1 and to the fact that it was more or less of a portable nature4 ,but the knowledge that it was constructed #cfj years after the known existence of the sundial 7see ,isaiah xxxviii4 #h71 leads us to surmise that other forms of dials were in use at the same time4 ,it is a known fact that the ancients were familiar with declining dials1 and the ,tower of the ,winds at ,athens1 which still exists1 has on its walls1 built in octagonal shape1 no fewer than eight of this kind4 ,and although the date of these dials is evidently of a later period than the actual building1 they certainly belong to a very early time4 ,however1 the ,greeks were1 as we know1 well versed in the art of dialling1 and without doubt gave a lead in this study to other nations4 ,herodotus1 writing in #ddc ,b4,c41 says that the ,greeks acquired their knowledge of the sundial from the ,babylonians2 the ,roman writers in turn give evidence of their acquisition of this instrument from the ,greeks4 ,although the ,romans were backward in the science of gnomonics and slow to adopt any particular form of horologe1 they eventually constructed many a beautiful dial of varied design4 ,the first sundial was erected in ,rome in the year #bij ,b4,c41 this being taken from the ,samnites by ,papirius ,cursor4 ,another was brought to ,rome by ,valerius ,messala from ,catania #bfa ,b4,c41 but it was not until #afd ,b4,c4 that1 as far as we know1 a dial constructed at ,rome was set up by order of ,q4 ,marcius ,philippus4 ,cicero1 writing in #dh ,b4,c4 to ,tiro1 mentions that he wished to place a sundial at his villa in ,tusculum1 and at a later date we see ,romans erecting sundials in every possible corner of their villas and grounds4 ,the first known dial in ,britain1 with the exception of the one or two reputed ,roman dials discovered in this country1 are those of ,saxon origin found on some of our ancient churches4 ,as far as we know nearly all the earliest mural examples are semicircular1 and although the spaces into which the dial is divided vary considerably in number and size1 they seem to point to the practice of the early ,norsemen dividing time into tides4 ,and since it is known that they apportioned the time into eight tides1 and that the oldest horologes have the fewest spaces1 it seems more than likely that many dials so marked owe their existence to these hardy invaders4 ,bede 7our earliest historian7 records the fact that the hours were shorter or longer according to the seasons1 and this testimony is borne out by existing dials1 generally found built into ancient buildings1 on the sides of porches1 and the jambs of windows4 ,i myself discovered one1 only two feet off the ground1 built into the east side of an old ,norman south porch1 and the fact that the dial had been cut in order to fit the stone into its place--added to its position--showed very plainly that it had been taken out of an earlier building and used again4 ,without hazarding any date as to the earliest form of horologe in this country1 ,i would but testify from my own experience that many dials of early workmanship actually exist unnoticed on many of our ancient buildings1 principally churches4 ,a close and careful examination of the walls of such would1 ,i am sure1 reveal many a time-worn horologe of the past4 ,generally they are found on faced stones built into porches1 windows1 and corners of buildings1 and consist of circles and half-circles1 divided by lines which radiate from a hole in the centre to the circumference4 ,the number of lines differ considerably and the spaces are also of unequal size4 ,evidence tends to prove that these dials are of ,saxon and ,norman times1 and ,i venture to think from their divisions that in many cases1 although found on ,norman buildings1 they tend to show that ,saxon ideas continued to exist in many things in spite of ,norman influence4 ,it would take many generations at that period of the history of our country to supplant in remote districts a recognised form of dial1 and although the ,norman method of recording time was more accurate1 doubtless it was but gradually adopted4 ,the ,saxons used the simple dial so long in vogue amongst the hardy ,northmen or ,vikings1 who1 being a maritime race1 founded their divisions of time on the ebb and flow of the tide4 ,first1 the four tides1 two high tides and two low2 then1 further improving this1 they subdivided these divisions again into halves and quarters1 thus making the day and night equal to sixteen hours4 ,in this country there exist many of their dials1 and some are very noteworthy4 ,there is an ancient dial built upside down into the wall of the church in the village of ,byland in the ,hambleton ,hills1 which is thought to have been made by a ,dane in the ninth century4 ,it bears the inscription3-- 8,,svmarlethan ,,hvscarl--,,me ,,fecit40 7,sumarlethi's ,house ,carl made me47 ,over the south door of ,weaverthorpe ,church1 ,yorkshire1 there is a similar dial1 only it is divided into twelve parts1 every alternate line being crossed4 ,it has an inscription3-- 8,in ,honore see ,andreae ,apostoli ,herebertus ,wintonie ,hoc ,monasterium ,fecit in ,tempore ,regn----0 ,the unfinished name is thought to be that of ,reginald ,,ii41 to whom in #idb ,king ,edmund stood godfather4 ,a remarkably fine dial of about #ajfd exists over the south door of the ancient church at ,kirkdale1 and bears a long inscription1 which1 being translated1 reads3-- 8,orm1 ,gamal's son1 bought ,s4 ,gregory's ,monastery when it was all utterly broken and fallen1 and he let it to be made anew from the ground1 to ,christ and ,s4 ,gregory1 in ,edward's day1 the ,king2 and in ,tosti's day1 the ,earl4 ,this is the day's sun-marker1 at every tide1 and ,hawarth me made and ,brand ,provost40 ,another early dial exists over the church door at ,bishopstone in ,sussex4 ,it bears the inscription 8,eadric10 and as a prince of the ,south ,saxons of this name lived ,a4,d4 #fhe1 it is thought that this is its likely date4 ,it was whilst gazing at an ancient dial which ,i had discovered that the following motto occurred to me3-- 8,the age of this dial1 who can compute it2 ,so hazard no guess for man to refute it40 ,still1 in spite of my couplet1 ,i made notes in my book as to the discovery of another ,saxon horologe4 ,such is the nature of the keen archologist that he feels obliged to put dates to every find of importance1 although oft-times a more learned brother will dispel by argument and proof very quickly his most sure convictions4 ,while attributing the early semicircular dial to the ,saxons1 evidence strongly points to the fact that the many-rayed circular dials are of the medival period4 ,it will ever be very hard to determine the date of many of these dials1 as the age of a stone1 cut and faced by the mason1 is an unknown quantity4 ,and there is hardly a stone building in this country that does not contain stone quarried from the demolished buildings of the past4 ,this being so1 many a dial may now occupy a very different position from that in which it was originally set4 ,as years moved on ye horologe was improved and immediately became more popular4 ,the time on the face of the dial was more divided1 and from being quite plain in appearance it gradually took a more ornate shape4 ,sundials continued to be erected long after clocks came into use1 and in our land during the #agth century many very fine specimens were erected4 ,doubtless royal patronage and interest had much to do with their popularity1 for we know that ,charles ,i4 took a keen interest in the art of dialling1 and himself caused a sundial to be set up in the ,privy ,garden behind ,whitehall1 at ,westminster4 ,the beautiful dial at ,holyrood ,castle1 ,scotland1 is said to have been a gift to his ,queen1 ,henrietta ,maria4 ,when kings and princes set the fashion their subjects soon follow suit1 and thus we find that some of the most beautiful dials are of this period4 ,until watches began to be made in numbers the sundial ruled supreme2 clocks did not in any way diminish their popularity1 and if the truth were known doubtless only helped to cause a greater number to be erected1 since not only could they be relied upon to keep accurate time1 but also to serve for the setting of a clock when it had stopped4 ,to-day we introduce the sundial into our gardens more for an ornament than from any wish to add to it a timekeeper1 and it is the love of the antique that causes old dials to change ownership and to be set up on new sites1 irrespective of the fact that they may have been constructed and set for a different locality4 ,it is curious to note that although sundials have ever been in use1 since their discovery there seems to have existed from time to time what ,i would like to call waves of popularity in the history of 8ye horologe40 ,such are clearly marked by the many existing dials which appertain to certain periods4 ,if we could only get a census of dates1 it would be a matter of great interest to trace the state of the country at the time of varying output1 and to note the years of war and peace1 of prosperity and depression4 ,i think it would be found that even as 8ye horologe0 marks only our sunny hours1 so also the sunny hours of a nation's life has bade the sundial live4 ,the marked interest that has been taken in the sundial during recent years shows it has still a great future before it4 ,if1 then1 age can add to its value1 and yet in nowise impair its reliability1 who will be without such a garden ornament that gives also a gentle touch to what is already a beautiful possession8 ,calling upon the thoughtful as it does by many an apt line or verse to consider the brevity of time1 it warns and exhorts with far greater emphasis than the voice of man4 ,though only of iron and stone1 the work of men's hands1 it seems almost to gain our sympathy1 for given to one who has experienced the ravages of time1 it demonstrates the value of quiet endurance and resignation under trouble4 ,t4 ,g4 ,w4 ,h4 ,illustration3 ,photograph ,no4 #a of ,saxon ,sundial built into the ,south ,porch of a ,norman ,church1 ,stanton ,s4 ,quintin1 ,chippenham1 ,,chapter ,,ii4 ,the study of 8ye horologe0 is a most pleasing occupation and a most engrossing science4 ,so much so that when it has come before the special notice of the great men of bygone ages1 it has always effected some lasting record of their interest1 and oft-times improvement1 in the construction of what was a most necessary acquisition for every establishment4 ,shakespeare1 in his ,richard ,,ii4 7act v4 scene #e71 makes ,king ,richard1 who was incarcerated in a dungeon in ,pomfret ,castle1 give utterance to the following words3-- 8,i wasted time1 and now doth time waste me4 ,or now hath time made me his numb'ring clock3 ,my thoughts are minutes2 and1 with sighs1 they jar ,their watches on to mine eyes1 the outward watch1 ,whereto my finger1 like a dial's point1 ,is pointing still1 in cleansing them from tears40 ,in ,henry ,,vi4 ,shakespeare again takes notice of the sundial3-- 8,methinks it were a happy life ,to carve out dials quaintly point by point40 ,he also alludes to them in some of his other plays4 ,mentioned by many famous men in various ways they are dealt with directly by not a few4 ,so important did the study of gnomonics become that it was at one time considered to be a most necessary part of a student's education4 ,sir ,christopher ,wren was well versed in the art of dialling in his boyhood1 and as a boy ,sir ,isaac ,newton made a sundial which he painted upon the ceiling of his room2 he also carved two dials upon the south end of the ,manor ,house at ,woolsthorpe1 in the parish of ,colterworth1 where he was born4 ,so numerous are the instances of famous men making or ordering sundials to be made1 that it would be impossible to mention even a representative number of names4 ,a beautiful sundial was erected at ,abbotsford by ,sir ,walter ,scott1 and all over the country are found dials of various ages and designs1 built by the orders of great and learned men1 to be a guide and also a memorial through years to come4 ,it was ,charles ,dickens who1 in ,june1 #ahei1 wrote to his daughter and signified his pleasure at receiving from the contractor for the works1 the gift of a balustrade out of the old ,rochester bridge2 he stated that without delay he had had a dial constructed to suit the pedestal1 and thus had added to his garden a fresh item of interest4 ,all forms of dials have received consideration--perpendicular1 horizontal1 pocket and ring dials2 even moon dials have not been neglected4 ,thomas ,fale1 in his book on 8,the ,art of ,dialling10 published in #aeic1 gives a chapter to 8the making of a dial1 to know the houre by the moon20--while it is certain that portable cylinder dials were in common use in ,england as early as the middle of the fifteenth century4 ,lydgate1 who wrote1 about the year #adcj1 the 8storie of ,thebes1 an additional ,canterbury tale10 which was printed with ,chaucer's works in #afea1 writes as if a dial were commonly carried by travellers4 ,he says3-- 8,passed ye thrope of ,boughton on the ,blee3 ,by my kalendar ,i gan anon to see ,through the sonne that full clear gan shine1 ,of the clock that it drew to nine40 ,and ,warton gives us a note on the word 8kalendar40 8,chilindre1 a cylinder1 a kind of pocket sundial40 ,many pocket dials of great beauty1 dating from the middle of the #agth century1 are in existence1 and1 although rare2 ivory1 silver1 brass1 and bone dials of the ,stuart period can still be secured from dealers for reasonable sums4 ,but1 like most rarities1 they will doubtless soon be bought up and find their way into museums or the collections of the rich4 ,how early a date may be fixed for the pocket dial in ,england cannot be determined4 ,nicholas ,kratzer1 styled the ,deviser of ,horologies to ,king ,henry ,,viii4 of ,england1 certainly left us pocket dials of his age1 for in ,cardinal ,wolsey's dial made by him we have a fair specimen of his art4 ,sixteenth-century pocket dials were made in ,france1 ,germany1 and ,italy1 and although they were of different shapes and sizes1 the general construction of 8ye horologe0 was the same4 ,in the ,british ,museum1 which is nowhere equalled as a public collection1 can be seen a great number of portable dials4 ,large private collections also exist in this country and on the continent1 containing many rare and extremely valuable specimens4 ,it seems only natural that pocket dials should be popular1 and when all things are considered1 it is a matter of considerable surprise that more do not exist4 ,to-day1 even a schoolboy has his watch1 and there is hardly a man who fails to feel his loss when without this indispensable article1 but it must be remembered that we are far more exacting as regards time than we used to be1 and the closer observance of minutes and seconds demands a portable timekeeper that is not dependent upon the sun1 which is so often hidden from our view4 ,it has been recorded that ,george ,washington was in the habit of carrying a pocket dial in the place of a watch2 nor does he stand alone in respect to this preference for a pocket horologe1 as many great men have delighted to indulge in this particular fancy4 ,an ancient custom1 which is still in vogue at a few of our parish churches1 is the ringing of a bell in the morning1 at noon1 and at curfew to proclaim the time of day4 ,this has now nearly died out1 and the curfew bell is in most places all that is left of a time-honoured method of telling the divisions of the day4 ,what8 we might naturally ask1 set the hour and fixed the time8 ,without doubt the ancient sundial1 invariably found on all old churches1 or which might have been carried by the clergyman or clerk in pocket form4 ,we can imagine how unpunctual people must have been on days that were dull1 and how very differently business matters must have been conducted in years that are gone from what they are in our own age4 ,whatever part the sundial has to play in the future history of individuals and nations1 it must never be forgotten that as a faithful recorder of the passing hour--under certain conditions--it remains for ever the most accurate timekeeper that has been discovered by mortal man4 ,great minds have loved to dwell upon its study1 and noble men have handed down to generations that were to come specimens of the craftsman's art and the scientist's discoveries4 ,in our own land exist many historical dials fashioned to satisfy the fancies of individuals1 and also for the benefit of the public4 ,it is a most noticeable fact that the majority of sundials attributable to great men have nearly always a motto or verse inscribed upon them4 ,from the earliest ages1 when 8ye horologe0 was a popular means of recording the time of day1 8a sundial motto0 was considered to be a necessary part of a well-ordered horologe4 ,most of the more elaborately constructed dials possess a motto or inscription of some kind or other1 and not a few have a verse or verses of the most searching and awe-inspiring nature4 ,generally speaking1 however1 the vast majority of sundial mottoes and verses1 are of an inferior standard1 and quite unworthy of the supreme beauty and great wisdom inculcated by this silent monitor4 ,for the most part the tendency of the varying ages has been to keep to the ,latin tongue1 in which1 with scholarly dictum1 the average artificer has in very deed expressed1 8,multum in ,parvo10 what a humble mind1 unversed in that language1 8not easily understanded by ye people10 would rather have read at greater length in his own mother tongue4 ,latin mottoes abound everywhere2 generally some pretty conceit of the unscholarly1 but often1 too1 the genuine relics of an ecclesiastical influence in matters of education4 ,a careful review of the large number of mottoes and verses that are known1 would1 as one might very naturally expect1 show that the great majority were of a religious kind4 ,but the paucity of ideas they display is painfully evident2 being as a rule of a lugubrious nature they are hardly ever far removed from the most self-evident facts2 and such awe-inspiring words as 8,prepare to die10 8,consider your latter end10 8,beware of the last hour10 8,i shall return but never thou10 do not convey aught of the sunny1 sympathetic1 instructive and lovable characteristics that the sundial has to give4 ,here and there the thoughts of great minds1 aptly expressed to suit the dial's power1 stand out as red-letter days in a church's calendar and proclaim by their individuality an exceptional character4 ,but such verses are very rare1 and where they exist they will generally be found on dials that have been erected by the order of the writer of the verse to mark some special occasion4 ,verses on sundials are comparatively scarce compared with short mottoes2 and this is surprisingly strange1 considering what ,i would like to term the poetry of 8ye horologe10 for there is hardly anything on this earth that is better calculated to call forth from man the very finest expressions relative to our brief life1 than the sundial4 ,this important point in the history of the sundial is hard to account for1 unless it be that the majority of dials were made for chance owners1 turned out1 in fact1 like the clocks of the present day1 only in a lesser degree1 and being actually finished when their destination was known4 ,in this case there would often be hardly room for a lengthy verse or verses4 ,possibly1 too1 in an economic age1 the extra cost was a bar to such2 anyway1 the fact remains that verses are seldom found4 ,but1 be it verse or motto1 one thing is most noticeable--namely1 that nearly every one gives force by potent words to some weighty1 though time-worn idea1 and they teach frail mortal man to moralise and dwell on a subject that he too readily thrusts from him--the brevity of life4 ,i should weary the reader if ,i were to attempt to record at all fully a fair variety of the mottoes that exist4 ,indeed1 to do justice to such a subject1 it would be necessary to give a very full list collected from the different lands that have in various ways influenced our own in matters of learning4 ,this not being possible1 ,i will but quote a few of those mottoes and verses that have appealed to me as the best of their class1 and1 with some short comment1 pass on to other items of interest4 ,what more appropriate or suitable motto could be chosen1 than the three words1 8,lead kindly light10 taken from ,cardinal ,newman's beautiful hymn4 ,they are full of power and trustfulness1 and1 if placed on a dial in the view of many1 would be answerable for innumerable good deeds and noble resolutions4 ,again1 note the motto--,cosi la vita1 8,such is ,life10 on a dial at ,albizzola4 ,this is of far greater force than 8,prepare to die40 ,we do not intend to die if we can help it1 we intend to live6 and so we put the motto 8,prepare to die0 from our mind as crude and unfeeling4 ,but not so the former2 it appeals to us1 and the imperceptible moving shadow on the dial's face that soon will be gone gives with the motto a gentle lesson that is considered by all4 ,there are longer mottoes of this class that give useful lessons1 and are of a kind well calculated to do good1 such as ,sic transit gloria mundi1 8,thus passeth the glory of the world20 and ,hora est ,orandi1 8,it is the hour for prayer20 and that fine selection from ,scripture for a dial1 8,i also am under authority40 ,such verses are good at all times and in all places1 and are very far removed from those that seem to contain only the darkest of outlooks and naught of the sunny prospects of life4 ,there is another style or class of motto or verse that has a witty vein1 and which is by no means uncommon4 ,the following are amusing3-- 8,what is the time8 come1 why do you ask8 ,is it to start1 or to end your task80 99 99 99 99 99 8,wait a moment never say ,when hours you mean1 or chance the day40 99 99 99 99 99 8,i live in the present1 a past ,i recall1 ,but my future depends on the strength of this wall40 99 99 99 99 99 8,since ,i never lose ,a fresh excuse go choose40 99 99 99 99 99 8,time was made for slaves1 men say2 ,yet free-men ask the time of day40 ,a verse1 written by ,andrew ,marvell in the reign of ,charles ,,ii41 called forth by a drunken nobleman of the ,court defacing the beautiful sundial erected by ,stone in the ,privy ,garden at ,whitehall1 in #affb1 is of interest3- 8,for a dial the place is too unsecure1 ,since the ,privy ,garden could not it defend2 ,and so near to the ,court they will never endure ,any monument how they their time may misspend40 ,there is a quaint and humorous legend given in 8,notes and ,queries0 7#bnd ,s1 v4 ix41 p4 #bgi71 concerning the motto 8,begone about your business10 placed over a dial at the east end of the ,inner ,temple terrace1 that makes very good reading4 8,when the dial was put up1 the artist inquired whether he should 7as was customary7 paint a motto under it4 ,the ,benchers assented1 and appointed him to call at the library on a certain day and hour1 at which time they would have agreed upon a motto4 ,it appears1 however1 that they had totally forgotten this2 and when the artist or his messenger called at the library at the time appointed1 he found no one but a cross-looking old gentleman poring over some musty book4 #8,please1 sir1 ,i am come for the motto for the sundial4' #8,what do you want8' was the pettish answer2 #8why do you disturb me8' #8,please1 sir1 the gentleman told me ,i was to call at this hour for a motto for the sundial4' #8,begone about your business1' was the testy reply4 ,the man1 either by design or mistake1 chose to take this as an answer to his inquiry1 and accordingly painted in large letters under the dial1 #8,begone about your business4' ,the ,benchers when they saw it1 decided that it was very appropriate1 and that they would let it stand--chance having done their work for them as well as they could have done it for themselves40 ,besides mottoes and verses that are of a serious or humorous nature1 there exists many that express in well-chosen words happy ideas of the present or the past1 such as the following3-- 8,let not thoughts of time depress ,a heart that owes but thankfulness40 99 99 99 99 99 8,some men delight to weigh the showers1 ,but few attempt to weigh the hours40 99 99 99 99 99 8,like the flowers1 ever try ,to catch the sun e'er it go by40 99 99 99 99 99 8,believe me1 mortals1 when ,i say1 ,the past is what we make to-day40 ,it is1 however1 a very difficult matter to trace the age of mottoes1 and the dial by no means is necessarily of the same date4 ,even from the #afth century onwards we find suitable mottoes engraved on sundial plates1 which called upon the visitor to moralise or dwell upon the passing beauties of creation4 ,these verses give us an insight into the home life and secret feelings of many a great mind otherwise silent on matters concerning the more human side of life4 ,herein lies the great charm of the sundial2 it stands oft-times at the cross paths of a garden demanding a passing look1 and it bids us stop and think of those things which we are apt to forget4 ,surrounded by all that most appeals to the human mind--transitory gems of the garden--the sundial exercises a subtle charm and exerts a soft and more kindly influence which is felt in after life4 ,so much could be said on the so-called poetry of the sundial that ,i hasten to control my pen and deal with a more important item concerning its value4 ,as an ornament it is the greatest acquisition that any garden can possess4 ,as a time-keeper1 if constructed for the locality and carefully set1 it is beyond compare2 and like the flowers themselves it will to the end of time remain one of the finest monitors that reasoning man can follow4 ,it is therefore a matter of great surprise that many sundials should have for so long a period fallen into disuse and decay4 ,but we live in an age of bustle and excitement1 and it is seldom that any day gives an hour of rest and mental relaxation from the worries that kill4 ,but when that hour does come1 and we find ourselves at peace in our gardens1 far from the maddening crowd1 studying the beauties of nature1 our gaze is certain to be centred sooner or later upon the sundial1 our best companion in that quiet hour2 and the few moments we spend in silent contemplation before it1 will strengthen us for the bustle and trials of an exacting life4 ,t4 ,g4 ,w4 ,h4 ,the ,setting of the ,sundial4 ,,chapter ,,iii4 ,the sundial is an interesting device for indicating the solar time of the place1 or places other than where fixed4 ,its construction is founded upon the astronomical theory of the sun's apparent motion2 and from these its rules and operations have been deduced by the aid of geometry and trigonometry4 ,the sundial1 at the present time1 is made in many forms1 the one usually met with being the horizontal form seen on a pedestal in many gardens4 ,the next is the vertical dial to be seen on many old churches and houses4 ,there are also a number of others1 such as the hemispherical1 cruciform1 cylindrical1 polygonal1 armillary sphere--commonly known as the 8globe0--reclining1 inclining1 and a great variety of pocket dials4 ,,the ,,horizontal ,,garden ,,dial consists usually of a circular metal plate1 divided into five-minute spaces1 the hours1 compass points1 ornamental star1 border and motto nicely engraved by hand1 and a metal gnomon for casting the shadow to indicate the time of day4 ,the larger dials1 from #ae ins4 in diameter1 are divided to single minutes1 but this is not always advisable1 especially in low latitudes1 as the minute divisions come too close together between the hours of #aj o'clock and #ab o'clock1 and from #ab o'clock until #b o'clock1 so that the lines appear almost as one4 ,when making a sundial of this description it is necessary for the maker to know the latitude1 or name of the place where the dial is going to be fixed4 ,,the ,,vertical ,,sundial1 which in construction is similar to a horizontal dial1 is for placing in an upright position1 such as on the wall of a church or house1 or one of the side faces of a tall upright pillar4 ,it should be made for1 and fixed on1 a wall having a southerly aspect1 so as to receive as much sun as possible4 ,before constructing a vertical dial it is necessary for the maker to know the declination or true aspect of the wall1 expressed in degrees1 in addition to the latitude of the place4 ,these figures must be absolutely correct1 for the whole accuracy of the dial depends upon the figures given4 ,the makers prefer to ascertain the declination themselves1 for they alone then hold themselves responsible for the dial to indicate correct solar time4 ,there are many ways of measuring the length of a day in use in this country 7the ,british ,isles71 but not one of them is perfect as a system for universal daily use4 ,the three chief kinds of time used in this country are ,greenwich mean time1 ,solar1 or apparent time1 and ,sidereal1 or star time2 this latter is the only exact time and is used by astronomers alone4 ,the time varies by several minutes between each of the methods mentioned4 ,the difference between sundial time and clock time is due partly to the irregular motion of the earth travelling in its path round the sun4 ,sometimes it travels faster and sometimes slower4 ,it is also due partly to the fact that the time shown by our clocks and watches1 called ,greenwich mean time1 is purely artificial and imaginary1 not agreeing with any natural time at all1 nevertheless for commercial purposes1 it answers very well4 ,the sun crosses the meridian at ,greenwich at #ab by the clock upon only four days in the year2 on all other days it is either before or after the clock1 the difference varying from a few seconds up to as much as a little over #af minutes4 ,on looking at the map of ,england it will be seen that from the extreme east coast 7,lowestoft7 to the extreme west coast 7,land's ,end7 the country extends from ,greenwich #a #de on the ,east #e #dj #be on the ,west4 ,now1 as the sun appears to travel from an easterly to a westerly direction each day1 and takes four minutes to travel over one degree of longitude1 it can be seen that it will take about #cj minutes to travel across the whole country1 and the time of all places east of ,greenwich is fast1 whilst at others west the time is slow4 ,for example1 supposing a sundial in position at each of the following places1 ,lowestoft1 ,greenwich1 and ,land's ,end1 and it was noon at ,lowestoft by the sundial1 the time indicated at the moment by each dial would be as follows3 ,lowestoft1 #ab o'clock2 ,greenwich1 #g minutes to #ab2 ,land's ,end1 about #bb minutes to #ab4 ,but our watches would have given the time as #ab o'clock at all places at the same moment1 so we see that something is required in the way of a table calculated for every day of the year1 giving the variations daily between the sundial and the watch4 ,the following table1 called an 8,equation ,table10 gives the difference in minutes1 and you will notice that the sundial and clock both agree on four occasions during the year3 #aeth ,april1 #adth ,june1 #ast ,september1 #beth ,december4 ,,equation ,,table4 ,,fast ,,means ,,that ,,the ,,watch ,,should ,,be ,,faster ,,than ,,the ,,dial4 ,,slow1 ,,slower4 ,,jan4 ,,feb4 ,,march4 ,,april4 ,days4 ,mins4,days4 #ag #d #be #h #ai #c #bh #i #ba #b #bc #a #be #j #bg ,fast #a #bi #b #ca #c ,the sundial1 as already mentioned1 shows solar time1 but by adding or deducting the differences1 as shown above1 local mean time is found1 and by again adding or deducting the difference of longitude1 ,greenwich mean time is the result4 ,for instance1 a sundial at ,wrexham 7#c ,west longitude7 on the #aath ,march indicates #aa o'clock1 and we want to find ,greenwich mean time4 ,we proceed as follows3-- ,h4 ,m4 ,wrexham ,sundial #aa #j ,difference of ,equation1 add #j #aj ---- ---- ,local ,mean ,time #aa #aj ,difference of ,longitude1 add #j #ab ---- ---- ,greenwich ,mean ,time #aa #bb ---- ---- ,we see by the above1 that the watch should be #bb minutes faster than the dial4 ,a well-made sundial should have engraved upon it an equation table and the longitude of the place where it is fixed1 and the consequent allowance of time to be added or subtracted to find ,greenwich mean time4 ,,sundials ,,should ,,be ,,fixed on a bright1 sunny day1 a horizontal dial being fixed as follows3--,first see that the stone pedestal on which the dial is to be fixed is perfectly rigid1 also flat and level on top4 ,remove with a pair of pinchers or plyers the three button-headed studs that are usually fitted on the back of the dial1 then place the dial approximately in position by moving it about until the shadows show the time within a few minutes1 and with a pencil1 mark the positions of the studs on the stone through the holes in the plate4 ,remove the dial and replace the studs in the dial2 cut the three holes about twice as large as the heads1 so that the dial has plenty of play to the right and left to facilitate final adjustment4 ,mix with water a little ,portland cement1 which is known as 8grouting10 damp the holes in the stone and pour the grouting in and place the dial in its place1 turning it until it shows correct solar time of the place1 taking care that the plate is level1 and then allow the cement to set4 ,the dial is now fixed1 and requires no further refixing at any time4 ,to ascertain correct solar time for fixing purposes proceed as in the example given here1 and for the purpose we will take ,andover 7#a ,west7 as the place where the dial is about to be fixed on #ast ,october4 ,h4 ,m4 ,greenwich ,mean ,time #aj #cj ,difference of ,longitude1 deduct #j #f ---- ---- ,local ,mean ,time #aj #bd ,difference of ,equation1 add #j #aj ---- ---- ,andover ,solar ,time #aj #cd ---- ---- ,so we see that on #ast ,october the dial must be fixed #d minutes faster than the watch4 ,the gnomon of a horizontal sundial is always fixed on the ,,xii4 o'clock line1 which represents the true north and south meridian1 and its edge is elevated above the plane to an angle equal to the latitude of the place4 ,in the northern hemisphere ,,xii4 o'clock and the elevated end of the gnomon are always placed towards the north1 but in the southern hemisphere the elevated end and ,,xii4 o'clock are placed facing the south4 ,in northern latitudes the sun is always due south at ,,xii4 o'clock by the sundial throughout the year1 and in southern latitudes it is always due north at ,,xii4 ,in both hemispheres the sun is always due east at ,,vi4 a4m4 and due west at ,,vi4 p4m4 ,sundials can be fixed in dull weather1 but a magnetic compass will then have to be employed2 and although the fixing is simpler than when the sun is used the result is not so accurate4 ,the directions are as given here3-- ,remove the studs and place the dial on the pedestal2 take the compass1 which should have a square box with needle1 and lay it on the dial plate with the east or west side of the box close against the gnomon1 and allow the needle to settle4 ,then1 knowing the 8magnetic variation0 of the spot--for example1 we will take ,london1 which is #af west of the true north--turn the sundial until the north end of the needle coincides with the #af division west of the ,n4 of compass dial4 ,take a pencil and mark the holes for studs2 cut the holes and fill with grouting2 place the dial on the pedestal and finally adjust with the compass before the cement sets4 ,sundials can be fixed by the compass1 and by the sun1 providing the sun is shining on the dial1 at any time during the day4 ,to read the time shown by a horizontal sundial1 stand facing the sun1 and for the morning hours take the right hand edge of the shadow1 and for the afternoon hours take the left hand edge4 ,sundials of good make have the hour-lines and other divisions radiating from two centres1 which are at a distance apart equal to the thickness of the gnomon1 consequently there appears to be two hour lines at ,,xii4 o'clock1 but really it is one1 as the shadow at noon fills the space between the two lines4 ,a sundial cannot be said to be complete without a motto of some description1 and by inscribing one on the dial or pedestal it gives a fitting voice to the dignified dial4 ,f4 ,b4 ,,sn4 would have wished to stay4 ,when life has reached its eventide1 ,and each ray is from the west1 ,and sunbeams to the dial confide ,that the hour they've marked calls rest2 ,then ,i wander midst the
