,testament--he is called ,god #be times in the ,new--he is called the ,son of ,god #da times--he is called the ,son of man #fj times--he is glorious in holiness1 in all his works and ways1 and independently possesses an essential glory as ,god1 equal with the ,father1 an ever blessed ,spirit1 a glory as the ,son of ,god1 a personal glory as ,god-man1 a mediatorial glory in the work of redemption1 a relative glory as the great and only head of the ,church1 a declarative glory in all his works of ,creation1 ,grace1 and ,providence2 there is no end of his greatness to them only which believe he is gracious--his name is as ointment poured forth4 ,there is one blessed effect which the ,name of ,jesus has upon the mind and conduct of believers1 worthy of attention1 and that is reverence4 ,the ,names of ,jesus being precious1 lovely1 and blessed1 are had in particular reverence by all them that fear him4 ,hence we are said to serve ,god acceptably1 with reverence1 and godly fear--that reverence which ,god approves1 himself produces2 and this reverence is necessary in the use of his ,names--in the godly conversation of saints1 and in the public ordinances of his appointment4 ,the first instance is the mark ,i aim at--to treat the subject according to its importance would fill a volume4 ,what ,christian to whom this ,name is dear1 but must lament the abuse of it among the carnal and ungodly people of the world--8,surely1 because of swearing1 the land mourneth40 ,what horrid oaths1 what dreadful imprecations1 what loud and repeated calls on ,god1 on ,christ1 to blast the members and faculties of soul and body1 although ,god has given many a public signal of his disapprobation of such conduct1 by answering their prayers in a moment1 and suddenly driving them to destruction and perdition--,o6 you that once were slaves to such an infernal custom1 but now called out of darkness into light--what are your feelings when you hear this best of ,names blasphemed8 ,when you call to remembrance your past conduct1 surely you can exclaim1 8by the grace of ,god ,i am what ,i am40 ,what humility1 contrition1 and godly sorrow do you feel1 upon every renewed sense of past folly--and what gratitude do you feel to him who hath made you to differ4 ,and to endear that ,name to you now1 which was once profaned by you1 7but leaving the world of the ungodly7 ,i must come nearer home1 even to those who profess better things2 and bear my testimony against the prevalent folly of many professors4 ,there appears an inseparable connection between love and fear--,i mean that holy1 child-like1 filial fear that ,god has promised to give his children--8,i will put my fear in their hearts30--this fear is of especial service to the saints2 and when in exercise they can resist almost any temptation--witness ,joseph's conduct4 ,when it is not in exercise1 the believer is in danger of falling into sin1 or complying with the first temptation that presents itself4 ,this fear is only the effect of spiritual knowledge1 and the love of ,god1 as reconciled and well pleased with us4--,while faith apprehends the love of ,god1 our love is led forth to him in sweet return2 and is attended with a holy spiritual awe--viewing the majesty of his person1 and the glory of his character1 although the soul is admitted into the most sweet familiarity with ,god4--,when this is the case the ,name of ,jesus is precious indeed2 and when this is not the state of the soul1 there is a love1 and a fear of the dear1 the dreadful name of the ,,lord ,,thy ,,god6--,and surely such souls can never hear or read1 with pleasure1 the pompous titles given to sinful men1 as his ,holiness--which is an attribute of ,deity--as1 the ,most1 or ,right ,reverend ,father in ,god1 ,lord of such a place--or even the common name given to ministers in general1 as the ,reverend so and so--the term ,reverend1 belongs to ,god alone1 as ,god--,holy and ,reverend is his ,name--and no one beside4 ,i wish great men1 and good ministers1 to have all the respect paid them becoming their stations1 but not at the expence of the ,divine honour4--,another part of this folly is evident1 from the light and trifling manner in which the ,name of ,god is used in the pulpit--as swearing by his life1 which is customary among some good ministers1 and their hearers copy after them--so that upon every trifling occasion1 we hear the dogmatical and awful oath pronounced1 8,as ,god liveth--as the ,lord liveth10 it is so and so2 and1 perhaps1 to an assertion that we have only their ipse dixit for4--,o ye ministers of the ,lord ,jesus--do not use this term so frequent2 for ,i do not think any one has a right to swear by ,god's life but himself1 who1 because he could swear by none greater sware by himself in the ,covenant1 to be the ,god of his ,church4--,how prevalent is this profanity among the professors of the day--when upon almost every meeting1 parting1 and common conversation1 they break out in this unguarded and impious language--8,good ,god6--,good ,lord6--,lord ,jesus6--,god bless you60--with other expressions of the like kind4--,what the excellent ,cowper observes1 is worthy of remark1 as it contains a sharp reproof to worldlings1 and profane professors4 ,oaths terminate1 as ,paul observes1 all strife2 ,some men have surely1 then1 a peaceful life1 ,in every tale they tell1 or false or true1 ,well known1 or such as no man ever knew-- ,they fix attention1 heedless of your pain1 ,with oaths1 like rivets1 forc'd into your brain6 ,a ,persian1 humble servant of the ,sun1 7,who1 tho' devout1 yet bigotry had none7 ,hearing a ,lawyer1 grave in his address1 ,with adjurations1 every word impress-- ,suppos'd the man a ,bishop6 or at least1 ,god's ,name upon his lips--a ,priest6 ,bow'd at the close1 with all his graceful airs1 ,and begg'd an interest in his fervent prayers6 ,only call to mind the third ,commandment6 ,this subject the libertine may treat with contempt1 and say1 ,what have we to do with the law of commands--why it was only made for carnal characters2 they will be judged by it6 ,but surely the children of ,god1 who love and esteem the ,name of their ,father1 ,god1 their ,saviour1 ,jesus1 will not1 must not1 blaspheme their ,names4--,time would fail to mention all the ways by which the ,name of ,jesus is slighted1 in light conversation on religious topics4--,i wish to be understood here2 ,i do not mean that upon the ,name of ,jesus1 people are to adopt the ,popish system of bowing the head or drop a curtsey1 nor put on a fearful1 dismal gloom2 but to speak of his ,name1 ,person1 and ,work1 soberly1 discreetly1 yet affectionately2 and upon their separation from each other1 to commend each to ,god1 with a degree of solemnity and christian affection--as 8,farewell--,grace and ,peace be with you--,the ,lord be with you20--while the heart sweetly replies 8and with thy spirit60 ,reverence in prayer1 ,i love and prize--access to ,god with an holy boldness1 but not impudence2 nor a gloomy1 horrid countenance1 as if we were addressing a ,god that hated us4 ,how solemn and how sweet the address of certain characters1 to ,jesus--8,lord save me6--,lord help me6--,lord that ,i might receive my sight6--,lord ,jesus receive my spirit0--,let the word of ,god be your rule in all things--so in an attendance on the public means1 be reverent1 be serious1 be cheerful--in an early attendance--let not your religion disturb the religion of others--if late1 do not rush into your seats1 while the minister is in prayer4 ,how painful to hear the females come in with pattens on--and others opening and shutting their pews--some coughing and sneezing1 so loud as to hurt the feelings1 and almost turn the temper of the most amiable ministers in the world1 to smother them4--,another species of irreverence ,i have long noticed with grief1 among many dissenters--as soon as the last sentence of the ,sermon is pronounced1 many directly rush out of ,chapel1 as though they were glad it was over--in some cases it is excusable2 a person may be faint in a warm place--others1 in service--some obliged to hasten to their families2 they may be excused4--,i wish every congregation showed as much reverence in the close of service1 as a certain place of worship ,i had the honour once to preach in--none went out till the ,benediction was pronounced2 and not till the whole assembly had stood still for the space of one or two minutes3 ,how lovely the sight6 ,do ye1 dissenters1 adopt the same plan--it will show your love to the ,gospel of ,jesus1 and to his assemblies4 ,i readily grant that these things have nothing to do with our salvation2 but surely no believer will object to them1 as they are designed for the honour of that dear ,name1 in whom centers all our felicity4 ,i might mention many other blessed effects which are produced by the ,holy ,spirit's making this ,name precious to believers2 but ,i forbear to enlarge on any other particulars--only the bare mention of a few things--an humble reliance1 trust1 and confidence in him--8they that know thy ,name will put their trust in thee40 ,supreme love to his ,person1 ,works1 ,ways1 ,ministers1 ,truths1 and ,dispensations--submission to his ,will--a desire to be conformed to his ,image--to be like him--to enjoy much communion with him--and to be for ever with him1 in a state of endless felicity4--,these effects deaden us to the world1 mortify sin1 lead us to deny all self-righteousness1 keep us near him1 humble the soul1 and create the most intense desire that others may be made acquainted with this ,name4 ,this is our refuge1 our joy1 our glory--8the ,name of the ,lord is a strong tower2 the righteous runneth in and are safe40 ,ye children of the most high ,god1 this ,jesus is yours1 in the most exalted sense of the word1 if you are driven out of every lying refuge1 and can say1 ,other refuge have doctrine of the ,godhead1 divinity1 personality1 and of course the offices and operations of ,god the eternal ,spirit1 ,i consider it my duty to address you4 ,i once considered you sound in the faith--but alas1 how have you fallen1 and fallen for the mean the beggarly purpose of a morsel of bread1 and your conscience knows it4 ,i should not perhaps have troubled you with this letter1 but you are so very busy in making converts to this your opinion--not contented with going to hell yourself1 you are determined to drag others with you4 ,i make no apology for this abrupt address1 but assure you1 that if you die in these awful sentiments of denying the ,godhead1 divinity and distinct personality of the ,holy ,spirit1 your end will be awful indeed2 to treat his sacred person with such awful contempt is shocking1 and to teach others so to do adds to your crime4 ,that there is a ,holy ,spirit you pretend not to deny--but 8,what is it80 say you and your deluded followers2 8,o nothing but a mere breath1 a point1 a mere emanation1 that's all60 ,pray ,sir1 where did you get this information from8 not from the ,bible that is plain2 where then but from other fools like yourself1 and now imposing these ridiculous notions upon your hearers as if you had been the original author of them2 whereas1 yourself can hardly tell what an emanation means4 ,may the ,lord restore you to truth1 or open the eyes of your hearers to see your errors1 and your base design in propagating them4 ,but from the ,scriptures of truth ,i am about to prove that the adorable ,spirit is something more than a mere breath or an emanation2 and that the ever-blessed ,spirit is a person ,god blessed for evermore--and be it at your peril to contradict it4 ,deny it you may--reason about it you may--but overthrow it you never shall4 ,thousands of hearts1 tongues and pens have been employed in this black work before you was born1 who are gone to the judgment seat of ,god to answer for this crime2 and without you relinquish your notions1 without humbling grace1 and the pardon of this sin1 so will you4 ,to the law and testimony1 without one word of reason from me1 let the word speak1 and we shall find something more than emanation4 ,the adorable ,spirit is described as a person2 and every one knows that a person is a living1 thinking1 intelligent being1 endowed with will and understanding2 and such is the ,holy ,spirit4 ,he communicates natural and spiritual life to mankind1 he must therefore possess it himself4 ,he wills what he pleases1 which would be ridiculous to suppose of an emanation4 ,he divideth to every man severally as ,he will4 ,he knoweth all things1 yea1 the deep things of ,god--this can never be said of a mere point of light4 ,personal actions are ascribed to him in not less than twenty particulars in the new ,testament-- ,he shall convince the world of sin2 then he must be a person if he be capable of convincing another of his mistakes1 as all the following actions prove this point4 ,he teacheth all things2 a human teacher is a person1 so surely is a divine one4 ,he is a comforter--sheds abroad the love of ,god--takes of the thing1 of ,christ--shews them unto us--applies the promises--declares our pardon is the earnest and seal of a promised heaven--he is one of the ,three that bears witness in heaven--testifies of ,christ--bears witness to the ,saints--acts as a spirit of grace and supplication--helps the saints in prayer--makes intercession in them--gives gifts to his people--calls1 qualifies1 orders1 commands1 and directs his ministers--dwells in the saints and will raise their bodies in the last day4 ,now if all these are not personal actions1 ,i leave every sensible person to judge2 surely none but persons destitute of reason can deny such infallible testimony2 besides1 love1 grief1 being rebelled against1 vexed1 provoked1 lied unto1 blasphemed1 sinned against with an unpardonable sin1 which can never apply to a mere breath1 a quality1 an attribute1 or an emanation4 ,i judge how you1 sir1 and in general all that have been and now are in the ditch4 ,apply these glorious scriptures--that they belong to the ,father1 say some2 no1 they belong to ,christ1 says another2 whereas1 it is plain that the blessed ,spirit is distinct from both4 ,the ,redeemer declares1 8,the ,lord ,god and his ,spirit hath sent me40 ,he is called the ,spirit of his ,son--he is to be sent from the ,father4 ,his work which is set forth in the above-mentioned texts is distinct from the work of the ,father and the ,son4 ,his glorious appearance at the baptism of ,christ proves the same fact2 so his name mentioned at the baptism of believers4 ,he is called ,jehovah ,lord and ,god2 the incommunicable perfections of ,god are in him1 and all the glorious works peculiar to ,god are said to be done by him4 ,eternity--he is the eternal ,spirit--he is omnipresent1 omniscient1 and omnipotent--he brought creation into order--gave life to all--formed the starry heavens--made man--directs the affairs of providence--endited the ,bible--formed the sacred body of ,christ--and at last raised it from the dead2 he is also worshipped with the ,father and the ,son1 and so must be distinct from both2 he is not the godhead of the ,son1 because he is distinct from the ,son1 hence he is called the ,spirit of his ,son4 ,a few more proofs of the dignity1 ,godhead1 and personality of the ,holy ,spirit out of a vast abundance ,i shall here introduce4 ,my design in this little tract is the glory of the blessed ,spirit--the establishing and confirming those who are taught of ,god--to put a sword into the hands of the young ,christian to recover backsliders1 and to shame those who have apostatized from their profession of this truth4 ,oh for a blessing upon this humble attempt6 but this is dependant upon ,god the ,holy ,ghost4 ,i am not writing a body of divinity4 ,i have not abilities for that2 but only stating those truths which are dear to my heart1 and producing a few out of the many ,scriptures1 to prove the ,godhead of the ,saviour and the ever-blessed ,holy ,spirit4 ,a few must suffice here4 ,john iii4 #f4--8,that which is born of the ,spirit40 #a ,john1 v4 #d4--8,whatsoever is born of ,god40 ,here the spiritual birth is attributed to the ,spirit--to ,god4 ,therefore the ,holy ,spirit is ,god4 99 99 99 99 99 ,acts xiii4 #b4--8,the ,holy ,ghost said--separate me ,barnabas and ,saul1 for the work whereunto ,i have called them40 ,heb4 v4 #d4--8,no man taketh this honour to himself1 but he that is called of ,god40 ,therefore the ,spirit is ,god4 99 99 99 99 99 ,matt4 ix4 #ch4--8,pray ye1 therefore1 the ,lord of the harvest1 that he will send forth labourers into his harvest40 ,acts xiii4 #d4--8,so they being set forth by the ,holy ,ghost40 ,this proves the ,holy ,ghost is the ,lord of his harvest4 99 99 99 99 99 ,luke ii4 #af4--8;,and it was revealed unto him by the ,holy ,ghost1 that he should not see death before he had seen the ,lord ,christ40 ,verse #bh4--8;,and he blessed ,god1 and said1 ,lord1 now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace1 according to thy word40 ,this ,word was the ,word of the ,holy ,ghost1 and is ,god and ,lord1 to be blessed and praised4 ,john xiv4 #ag4--8;,he1 the ,spirit of ,truth1 dwelleth in you1 and shall be in you40 #a ,cor4 xiv4 #be4--8;,god is in you1 of a truth40 #b ,tim4 iii4 #ad4--8;,all ,scripture is given by inspiration of ,god40 #b ,peter xxi--8,holy men of old spake as they were moved by the ,holy ,ghost40 ,john iv4 #da4--8;,it is written in the prophets1 and they shall all be taught of ,god40 #a ,cor4 ii4 #ac4--8,not in the word which man's wisdom teacheth1 but which the ,holy ,ghost teacheth40 ,acts v4 #c4--8,why hath ,satan filled thine heart to lie to the ,holy ,ghost80 ,verse #d4--8,thou hast not lied unto men1 but unto ,god40 #a ,cor4 iii4 #af4--8,the temple of ,god is holy1 which temple are ye80 #a ,cor4 vi4 #ai4--8,know ye not that your bodies are the temples of the ,holy ,ghost80 ,dent4 vi4 #ad4--8,thou shall not tempt the ,lord thy ,god40 ,acts v4 #i4--8;,how is it that ye have agreed to tempt the spirit of the ,lord80 ,matt4 xix4 #ag4--8,there is none good but one1 that is ,god40 ,psalm clxxiii4 #aj4--8,thy ,spirit is good2 lead me40 99 99 99 99 99 ,i might mention many more1 with a vast many proofs of this sublime doctrine1 but ,i trust you will be led to read them in the ,scriptures with a grace-taught eye1 and rejoice in the truth as you discover and feel it4 8,there are three which bear record in heaven0--the ,father2 the ,word1 7as ,son of ,god7 and the ,holy ,spirit2 and these three are one--not merely one person1 bearing three names1 but three persons--nor yet three gods1 but only one in essence--three in persons1 distinct in personality1 names and office4 ,this sacred ,three bear record to the ,sonship1 ,godhead1 ,divinity1 and ,dignity of ,christ4 ,so they also bear record to the consciences of ,god's dear people--that they are the ,lord's4 ,the record of the ,father is1 8,yea1 ,i have loved thee20--the record of the ,son is1 8,i have redeemed thee20--and the record of the ,spirit is1 8,i have called thee40 ,it is necessary this grand point should be well understood by the ,lord's people1 that they may enjoy distinct holy communion with1 and give equal glory to1 the adorable ,author of ,salvation4 ,it was my lot to fall in with1 and to be often situated with characters who were inimical to this grand fundamental truth4 ,swedenborg denied the existence of the ,father and the ,holy ,spirit4 ,socinians1 ,arians1 and ,sabellians1 either in one form or another1 deny the ,godhead of ,christ1 and the personality of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,thus1 amongst this motley group1 they leave us no ,god at all4 ,many have been my conflicts with such2 but the ,word is so plain upon the subject1 that it needs no comment1 only by comparing a very few out of the many scriptures of truth1 and drawing a very reasonable inference from the plainest testimony4 ,this has been done by an excellent author1 the rev4 ,w4 ,jones2 and the great ,mr4 ,macgowan1 in his 8,twenty ,letters to ,j4 ,priestly1 ,d4,d40 ,i will only compare a few texts together1 and you will see the beauty of truth4 ,as-- ,isaiah vi4 #e--8,mine eyes have seen the ,king1 the ,lord of ,hosts40 ,john xii4 #da4--8,these things said ,esias1 when he saw his 7,christ's7 glory1 and spake of him40 8,therefore ,jesus is the ,lord of ,hosts40 ,isaiah xliii4 #aa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,isaiah xliii4 #aa4--8;,i1 even ,i1 am the ,lord1 and besides me there is no ,saviour40 #b ,peter iii4 #ah4--8,our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ40 ,then ,jesus ,christ is ,jehovah1 the ,saviour4 99 99 99 99 99 ,rev4 xxii4 #f4--8,the ,lord ,god of the ,holy ,prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants things which must shortly be done40 ,rev4 v4 #af4--8;,i1 ,jesus1 have sent mine angel to testify these things unto the churches40 ,therefore ,jesus is the ,lord ,god of the ,prophets4 99 99 99 99 99 ,isaiah xliv4 #f4--8,thus saith the ,lord1 the ,king of ,israel1 and his ,redeemer1 the ,lord of too plain to be denied4 ,christ is the ,king of ,israel1 the ,redeemer1 the ,lord of ,hosts1 the first and the last4 99 99 99 99 99 ,psalm lxxviii4 #ef4--8,they tempted and provoked the ,most ,high #h4--8;,i am the ,almighty40 99 99 99 99 99 ,i might here fill a volume of immense size1 to prove the same fact2 but when ,god gives a man up to ,satanic delusion1 he generally mounts the scorner's
