,letter4 ,banbury2 ,february #ast1 #ahjh4 ,,sir1 ,,as you have solicited me to vindicate myself from the things laid to my charge1 ,i take this opportunity of making public the sentiments ,i hold2 and ,i will answer the rest of the charges at the close of my confession of faith4 ,the charges brought against me1 are these four2 ,first1 ,that ,i hold and propogate ,antinomian sentiments4 ,secondly1 ,that ,i create divisions wherever ,i preach4 ,thirdly1 ,that after ,people come to hear me preach1 they cannot with pleasure hear their own ,ministers again4 ,and1 ,fourthly1 ,that ,i do not preach to ,sinners4 ,these are heavy charges indeed6 ,with respect to the first1 as my sentiments are deemed ,antinomian1 ,i think it my duty to make them public3 the rest of the charges are not worth an answer4 ,but1 ,i can assure you1 ,sir1 that the leading doctrines ,i preach1 are in harmony with the ,word of ,god1 which is the only rule of faith and practice3 ,i embrace and propogate no other doctrines than these1 set forth in the doctrinal ,articles of the ,church of ,england2 the ,westminster ,confession of ,faith2 and what your own ,ministers1 who belong to the ,associations1 generally hold1 as appears upon their circular letters2 namely1 receiving the ,scriptures of the ,old and ,new ,testament1 as their only guide in faith and practice2 and thence deriving their belief1 in the important doctrines of three equal ,persons1 in one divine essence2 ,eternal and personal ,election2 ,original ,sin2 ,justification1 by the imputed righteousness of ,christ2 ,efficacious ,grace in ,regeneration2 the final perseverance of ,believers to eternal ,glory2 the resurrection of the ,dead2 the last ,judgment2 the everlasting happiness of the ,righteous2 and the punishment of the ,impenitent4 ,these1 ,sir1 are the leading doctrines ,i preach1 and they stand in no need of an apology3 but1 as ,i am set for the defence of that gospel ,i have felt and enjoyed1 ,i am not ashamed of one of its glorious doctrines2 nor did ,i ever intentionally deviate from them in one sentence ,i ever pronounced1 since ,i have felt their power1 seen their beauty1 and have been enabled to declare them2 and that good hand that instructed me in them1 and has owned and blest them1 by me1 as an instrument1 ,i trust1 will enable me to maintain them to the close of life2 then1 ,i hope to feel them supporting my soul1 comforting my heart1 and giving me a sweet assurance of an entrance into that kingdom1 that cannot be moved4 ,the following doctrines ,i have been enabled to declare amidst great opposition1 and1 as they are a part of the revealed will of ,god1 those who oppose them1 are fighting against ,god himself4 ,as to the loss of the favor and friendship of those ,ministers who are strangers to the power of ,godliness1 and averse to the humiliating doctrines of the ,cross of ,christ1 this1 ,i hope1 will not break my heart2 and while they are loading me with reproach1 ,i shall not render railing for railing2 for while they curse1 ,i will bless2 while they condemn1 ,i hope ,god will justify2 while they oppose1 ,i know he will lead on2 and1 ,i hope1 ,i shall be enabled to put up that charitable prayer for my enemies1 which the ,redeemer did for his2 8,father1 forgive them30 in the language of dying ,stephen1 8,lord1 lay not this to their charge30 and in the pious breathings of the ,church of ,england ,litany1 ,i would pray1 8,that it may please thee1 to forgive our enemies1 persecutors1 and slanderers1 and to turn their hearts40 ,and while many in our day are shy of the doctrines of the gospel1 7which is an awful proof they never felt their power1 and never tasted their sweetness1 so that they are but little consequence to them27 ,i hope1 ,i shall be enabled to stand fast in the faith1 and hold the beginning of my confidence firm1 unto the end2 not at all terrified by any of my adversaries1 however popular they may be4 ,if ,i could palliate and comply with their dead barren dry system of legality1 ,i believe that they would cease to reproach me4 ,but1 because ,i maintain and declare the whole counsel of ,god1 ,i am deemed an ,antinomian2 a ,troubler of ,churches2 a ,sower of ,dissentions2 a ,creator of ,divisions2 ,one that ,disaffects ,hearers with their own ,ministers2 ,one that does not preach to ,sinners2 and1 in fact1 every thing that is disrespectful in the estimation of proud ,legalists1 and self-righteous ,pharisees4 ,the following ,confession1 ,i read at my ,ordination1 with a few additions2 and as many of my friends have so repeatedly intreated me to make it public1 ,i take this opportunity of doing it1 praying that the best of blessings may accompany the same1 as they are sentiments calculated to display the glory of ,god1 and bring joy and peace to that ,sinner who is made sensible of his lost condition4 ,a ,confession of ,faith4 ,i4 ,i believe1 that the ,scriptures of the ,old and ,new ,testament are the word of ,god1 and the only rule of faith and practice4 ,,ii4 ,i believe1 that there is but ,one only1 living1 and true ,god2 that there are ,three ,persons in the ,godhead1 who are equal in nature1 power1 and glory2 and1 that the ,son and ,holy ,ghost1 are as truly and properly ,god1 as the ,father4 ,these ,three divine ,persons are distinguished from each other by peculiar relative properties4 ,these ,three divine distinct ,persons1 ,i profess to reverence1 serve1 and worship1 as the ,one true ,god4 ,,iii4 ,i believe1 that before the ,world began1 ,god did elect a certain number of ,mankind unto everlasting life1 whom he did predestinate to the adoption of ,children1 by ,jesus ,christ1 of his own free grace1 and according to the good pleasure of his will2 that he appointed holiness as the means2 and that no one has a right to consider himself as a chosen vessel1 till he is effectually called by the grace of ,god4 #f ,,iv4 ,i believe1 that ,god made all things in ,creation1 out of nothing1 to display his goodness1 wisdom1 power1 and glory2 and1 that by the same power1 he upholds and governs1 rules and directs all things in ,heaven and ,earth2 and1 that he displays his sovereignty according to the counsel of his own will1 or his eternal plan1 formed before all ,worlds4 ,v4 ,i believe1 that there is one ,mediator between ,god and ,man2 the ,man1 ,christ ,jesus2 that he stood in his mediatorial capacity as our representative and head1 in the covenant of eternal redemption and grace2 engaged to be all that to his people1 they could possibly need in time1 and their bliss through eternity4 ,,vi4 ,i believe1 that ,god made ,man upright2 but mutable and liable to fall3 and1 being left to the freedom of his own will1 through the influence of ,satan1 he broke the covenant of works1 and fell from the ,image of ,god2 that all ,mankind sinned in him and fell with him1 as their head and representative2 and both him and his posterity became liable to the curse and penalty of a violated law4 ,,vii4 ,i believe1 that all ,mankind are conceived and born in sin1 ,children of disobedience1 enemies to ,god1 violaters of his commands1 averse to good1 prone to evil1 ,children of wrath1 obnoxious to the justice of ,god1 and the condemnation of his law3 and ,i believe1 that no ,creature can help or deliver himself1 out of that wretched state into which he has fallen4 ,i solemnly believe1 that this is the state of all ,men by nature4 ,,viii4 ,i believe1 that according to the eternal appointment of ,god the ,father1 and the ,covenant engagements of the dear ,redeemer1 that1 in the fulness of time1 ,god sent his ,son into the world to redeem fallen ,men2 that part of the human race1 that was given him in eternity2 that their redemption was obtained by the shedding of his blood2 that this redemption is special and particular1 designed only for the elect of ,god1 the ,sheep of ,christ1 who only share the special and peculiar blessings of it4 ,and1 in order to accomplish our redemption1 ,i believe1 it was necessary that the ,redeemer should take upon him our nature1 a human body and soul1 created and formed by ,god the ,spirit1 conceived in the womb of the ,virgin ,mary1 born of a ,woman1 made under the law1 that he might redeem his people from it2 work out a righteousness adequate to its demands1 make an atonement by suffering the death of the ,cross1 satisfy divine ,justice1 glorify all the attributes of ,deity1 and open a way1 for the communication of all those blessings1 which are needful for the ,saints of ,god1 both for time and eternity4 ,,ix4 ,i believe1 that the matter of the ,sinners' justification before a holy ,god1 is the righteousness of ,christ imputed to them2 which is1 his perfect1 spotless obedience to the law1 in their room and stead1 without the consideration of any works done by them2 and1 that the full and free pardon of all their sins1 past1 present1 and to come1 is only through the blood of ,christ1 according to the riches of his grace2 and1 that none can be justified in any other way4 ,this righteousness being seen by the eye of faith1 and embraced by the hand of faith1 we are manifestly justified and freed from the law2 that1 being dead wherein we were held1 we live to ,god1 and by love serve the ,lord1 having our fruit unto holiness1 and the end1 eternal life4 #i ,x4 ,i believe1 that all the objects of eternal love1 the subjects of his choice1 and the purchase of the ,redeemer's blood1 are effectually called in one way or another1 by the efficacious and irresistible grace of ,god the divine ,spirit2 and not by an act of ,man's free will and power4 ,i believe they are washed1 justified1 and sanctified1 in the name and by ,god the ,spirit1 in some part of their lives4 ,,xi4 ,i believe1 that all ,saints are kept by the mighty power of ,god1 through faith1 to eternal ,salvation2 and1 that as sure as they are called1 justified1 and sanctified1 they will infallibly persevere3 because of the perpetuity of ,god's love1 the liability of his covenant1 and his faithfulness to his absolute promises4 ,,xii4 ,i believe1 that the ,church of ,christ consists of true believers in his name2 that these are his mystical body1 of which1 he is the only head1 and there is no other3 and1 that all the ,children of ,god derive spiritual life from him1 by virtue of union to him2 that he is our life2 and in consequence of that1 we are now quickened by his life-giving power in conversion2 our bodies shall be quickened in the last day1 and all ,believers shall enjoy eternal life1 in glory for ever4 ,,xiii4 ,i believe1 that in the new testament ,church of ,christ1 there are but two ,sacraments2 ,baptism1 and the ,supper of the ,lord4 ,i believe1 ,baptism to be an outward and visible sign2 first1 of the sufferings1 death1 burial1 and resurrection of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ2 secondly1 of an inward and spiritual operation of the ,holy ,ghost1 upon the hearts of believers2 and is a grand emblem of a death unto sin1 and a new birth unto righteousness2 for being by nature the children of wrath1 we are by regeneration1 manifested to be children of grace4 ,i believe1 that only those who profess the name of ,jesus1 have any right thereto4 ,that it should be administered to ,adults alone1 in the name of the adorable ,trinity2 and1 that it is to be performed by immersion4 ,i believe1 that the ,lord's ,supper was instituted the night on which he was betrayed1 to represent his sufferings and death2 and is to be attended too by all ,believers1 until his second coming4 ,,xiv4 ,i believe1 that it is the duty of every ,christian to obey the laws of their ,country2 not to speak evil of ,dignities2 but1 to pray for the ,king1 his ,family1 and the ,government under which we live2 to study to be quiet1 peaceable1 and submissive1 according to the laws of ,jesus ,christ1 which is our rule of conduct3 and1 who has said1 8,render unto ,csar1 the things which are his20 and1 by his holy ,apostles1 has commanded 8,that every ,soul should be subject to the higher powers2 that we should honor all ,men1 love the ,brotherhood1 fear ,god1 honor the ,king40 ,,xv4 ,i believe1 that it is the duty of all ,believers1 to take the commands of our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ1 as their rule of conduct2 that1 while they are relying on his ,righteousness1 for justification2 on his ,blood1 for pardon2 and1 on the ,spirit1 for internal sanctification2 they1 from a principle of love shed abroad in their hearts1 are made willing to obey his laws1 as ,king in ,mount ,zion3 and1 that his commandments are the ,believer's rule of life3 that it is their duty to stand fast in one ,spirit1 with one mind1 striving together for the faith of the gospel3 that it is their duty to walk in wisdom1 to them that are without2 to exercise a conscience void of offence towards ,god and ,man1 by living soberly1 righteously1 and godly in this present world3 that it is their duty to walk with each other in all humility and brotherly love2 to watch over each other's conversation2 to stir up one another to love and to good works2 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together1 as we have opportunity2 to worship ,god1 according to his revealed will2 and1 when the case requires1 to warn1 rebuke1 and admonish one another1 according to the rules of the gospel3 and1 that it is our duty to sympathize with each other1 to bear with one another's weaknesses1 failings1 and infirmities2 and1 particularly to pray for one another4 ,all these duties we are bound to perform1 and every other law of ,christ's spiritual house1 through the gracious influence of a ,spirit of love1 of power1 and of a sound mind2 ever remembering1 that we are to obey the laws of our ,sovereign1 as ,king1 on his holy hill of ,zion4 #ab ,,xvi4 ,i believe1 that all the ,ordinances of divine appointment ought to be attended unto1 by all that profess their faith in1 and love to our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 as the head of his ,church2 hearing the ,word1 public ,prayer1 ,baptism1 and the ,lord's ,supper3 singing of ,psalms1 ,hymns1 and ,spiritual ,songs1 vocally2 this is an ordinance of the gospel1 to be performed by ,believers2 but1 as to time1 place1 and manner1 every one ought to be left to their liberty in using it4 ,,xvii4 ,i believe1 that there will be a ,resurrection1 both of the just and unjust2 and1 that ,christ will come a second time1 to judge both quick and dead2 when he will take vengeance on the wicked1 and introduce his own ,people into his kingdom and glory1 where they shall be for ever with him2 and1 then shall the mediatorial kingdom be delivered up to the ,father1 by the ,redeemer2 the mystery of ,god be finished3 ,heaven will be the ,saints final home2 and1 ,god1 ,father1 ,son1 and ,spirit1 be all in all1 for ever and ever4 ,,xviii4 ,i believe1 that the felicity of the ,saints will be eternal2 and ,i as firmly believe1 such will be the eternity of misery2 unless1 the never dying worm dies1 and the unquenchable fire goes out2 which will not1 cannot be2 for the mouth of the ,lord hath spoken it4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the above ,articles are the doctrines ,i preach1 which ,i did not learn of ,man2 but1 by the teachings of the ,spirit1 by the ,word4 ,the rest of the ,charges are not worthy my notice1 as they arise from pride and envy2 and1 ,i shall only remark1 that all faithful preaching ever did create divisions4 ,god having put an enmity between the seed of the ,woman1 and the seed of the ,serpent2 this enmity is stirred up wherever these two seeds meet4 ,the history of ,truth1 in all ages1 prove that this is no new thing4 ,the dear ,redeemer1 asks an important question1 8,suppose ye1 that ,i am come to give peace on the earth8 ,i tell you1 nay2 but rather divisions20 see the #abth chapter of ,luke1 from the #djth to the #edth verse4 ,as to the disaffection of the ,people to their own ,ministers1 after hearing me preach1 as ,ministers inform you2 how can ,i help that8 ,i do not speak against them2 but1 advise my hearers to follow after truth1 in its beauty1 simplicity1 and power4 ,but ,i am not accountable for the imprudencies of my hearers4 ,none ever heard me in public or in private1 drop a disrespectful hint of any ,ministers around me2 although1 ,i am informed1 they have said many cruel things of me3 for which1 ,i trust1 the good ,lord will pardon them1 for ,i do2 as ,i know1 ,god1 for ,christ's sake1 hath forgiven me4 ,as to the last ,charge you intimate1 that ,i do not preach to ,sinners4 ,this is an absurd accusation indeed6 ,for who do ,i1 or who can ,i preach to1 but fallen ,sinners1 by nature and practice2 as faith the voice of wisdom1 8,unto you1 ,o ,men1 ,i call1 and my voice is to the ,sons of ,men40 ,but1 ,i suppose the meaning of this ,charge is1 that ,i do not command dead ,sinners to quicken their own souls2 and suppose ,i did1 would they obey me8 ,that ,i do not tell blind ,sinners to open their own eyes8 ,if ,i thought they could do it1 ,i would tell them to do it1 from the pulpit4 ,that ,i do not tell all ,men it is their duty to believe8 ,whereas1 ,god says of many1 they never shall believe4 ,that ,i do not command carnal ,persons to perform spiritual acts8 and how should they8 seeing they are enemies to ,god1 and the slaves of sin and error4 ,that ,i do not tell all ,mankind1 that ,christ is offered to them1 if they will but accept of him8 ,no4 ,sir4 ,i leave all this ,baxterian stubble1 and declare the whole counsel of ,god4 ,whereas1 the above ,calls to ,sinners1 form no part of that counsel4 ,god does not condemn ,men because he has been pleased to withold that precious gift of faith from them3 there is sin enough in all ,men1 to render them obnoxious to the curse of the law3 and the ,saviour himself says1 8,think not1 that ,i will accuse you to the ,father2 there is one that accuseth you already1 even1 ,moses1 in whom ye trust40 ,to command all ,men1 where the gospel comes1 to obey the internal call of it1 is not my work3 but1 to tell ,people1 it is their duty to be found in the means1 is another thing4 ,the former1 ,i shall not do2 the latter1 is in harmony with many parts of ,god's ,word4 ,but ,i know it is fashionable1 to tell ,sinners to believe1 and to receive an offered ,christ2 to open the door of their hearts to him2 and1 in fact1 the ,sinner is set to do that1 which the ,holy ,ghost only can do for him4 ,this is the modern doctrine so much admired in our day2 which is calculated to cherish the pride of ,man1 and make ,sinners contented with a form of godliness without the power4 ,but1 8,from all false doctrine1 heresy1 and schism1 good ,lord deliver us40 ,i am yours1 in gospel bonds1 ,j4 ,,church4 99 99 99 99 99 ,cheney1 ,printer1 ,banbury4 ,footnotes4 #f ,this doctrine is clearly revealed in the ,scriptures1 embraced by our ,reformers1 as set forth in the #agth ,article of the ,church of ,england1 and in the ,westminster ,confession of ,faith4 ,the ,seventeenth ,article of the ,church1 thus expresseth this doctrine3--8,predestination to ,life1 is the everlasting purpose of ,god1 whereby 7before the foundations of the world were laid7 he hath constantly decreed by his counsel1 secret to us1 to deliver from curse and damnation those whom he hath chosen in ,christ out of mankind1 and to bring them by ,christ to everlasting salvation1 as vessels made to honour4 ,wherefore1 they which be endued with so excellent a benefit of ,god1 be called according to ,god's purpose by his ,spirit working in due season2 they through grace obey the calling2 they be justified freely3 they be made sons of ,god by adoption3 they be made like the image of his only-begotten ,son1 ,jesus ,christ3 they walk religiously in good works1 and at length1 by ,god's mercy1 they attain to everlasting felicity40--,this is the noble testimony of our ,reformers1 as agreed and subscribed to by every conscientious ,churchman2 to this agree1 the ,westminster ,confession of ,faith1 as exprest in the #bjth ,article of the shorter ,catechism4 ,god having out of his mere good pleasure1 from all eternity1 elected some to everlasting life1 did enter into a ,covenant of grace1 to deliver them out of the estate of sin and misery1 and to bring them into an estate of salvation by a ,redeemer4 ,a vast many passages of scripture can easily be brought to prove this important ,article2 and1 happy for those1 who have got the sweet evidence of ,god's ,spirit1 witnessing their adoption into his family4 ,if this is ,antinomianism1 ,i am willing to bear the name1 and enjoy the blessings of an everlasting ,covenant of ,election and ,sovereign ,grace4 #i ,this doctrine of a ,sinner's justification before ,god1 as exprest in this ,article1 is held forth in almost every part of ,god's ,word that relates to our ,salvation4 ,this doctrine1 however despised in our day by modern ,pharisees1 is a glorious and a precious truth3 it was received by our ,reformers1 as noted in the ,eleventh ,article of the ,church of ,england1 on the justification of ,man4 8,we are accounted righteous before ,god1 only for the merit of our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ1 by faith1 and not for our own works or deservings3 ,wherefore1 that we are justified by faith only1 is a most wholesome doctrine1 and very full of comfort1 as more largely is expressed in the ,homily of justification40 ,see also1 the ,thirty-third ,article in the ,assembly's ,catechism3 8,justification is an act of ,god's free grace1 wherein he pardoneth all our sins1 and accepteth us as righteous in his sight1 only for the righteousness of ,christ imputed to us1 and received by faith alone40 ,happy ,believer1 that can say in sweet assurance1 8,jesus1 thy blood and righteousness1 ,my beauty are1 my glorious dress2 ',midst flaming ,worlds1 in these array'd1 ,with joy shall ,i lift up my head40 ,and this honor have all the ,saints4 #ab ,if it can be proved1 that this ,article has a grain of ,antinomianism in it1 ,i ask1 are not these the practical truths of the gospel1 which we1 as ,believers1 are to obey1 as a proof we are passed from death unto life1 and are brought to serve the ,lord1 in newness of ,spirit1 and not in the oldness of the letter2 not working for life1 but from a principle of life received1 as being not without law to ,god1 but under the laws of our present ,husband1 ,christ4 ,the moral law being fulfilled in our stead1 we are by faith enabled to serve him1 who has done so great things for us4 ,it is the ,believer's desire1 that the moral law should be fulfilled2 and1 to use the language of a good and great ,man1 it is evident this law is fulfilled in a fourfold sense2 ,first1 8,in precept and penalty1 by the ,redeemer himself40 ,secondly1 8,in the ,believed1 when the love of ,god is shed abroad in his heart40 ,thirdly1 8,in the exercise of a conscience void of offence1 by the internal operations of the ,spirit1 enabling us to walk in our degree1 as he walked40 ,fourthly1 8,in the execution of its awful sentence upon the wicked2 and ,heaven and ,earth shall pass away1 before a tittle of this law can fail1 till it be fulfilled40 ,it is strange1 that those ,ministers1 who maintain the holiness1 goodness1 truth1 and justice of the moral law1 should be traduced as ,antinomians2 whereas1 they are the only characters that handle the law1 lawfully2 by representing it to ,believers as fulfilled in their stead1 by their covenant ,head and ,husband2 laying them under eternal obligations to love and serve him in newness of the ,spirit4 ,the term ,antinomian1 cannot belong to the above characters1 but to all ,men in a state of nature1 whether professors or prophane1 they are in a state of enmity against the law1 and its adorable giver2 and1 although they may plead for it1 they are enemies to it1 ignorant of it1 and condemned by it4 ,it is evident1 this was the case of ,paul1 before his conversion1 8,i was alive without the law once20 he was ignorant of its nature1 its author1 its demands1 and its curse3 but1 when ,god led him to see himself in that glass1 he exclaimed1 8,the law is spiritual1 but ,i am carnal1 sold under sin40 ,when ,david was taught the same lesson1 he crys out1 8,i have seen an end of all perfection1 but thy commandments are exceeding broad40 ,all that are cleaving to this law1 as a covenant of works1 are enemies to the ,lord ,jesus ,christ2 and1 all that die under it1 must be judged by it4 ,now1 because ,i hold forth the grand doctrines of the gospel1 and enforce a knowledge of this law1 by the teachings of the ,spirit of ,god1 that ,sinners may be brought to see their need of a ,mediator1 and a ,surety righteousness2 for this1 ,i am condemned as an ,antinomian6 ,but1 if this ,article of my ,confession1 teaches anything like it1 ,i must say it is the ,antinomianism of the gospel1 which ,i shall consider as my duty to enforce1 as ornamental to the ,religion of the ,son of ,god4 ,i shall only add1 that ,i was much pleased to see this subject ably handled1 in that best of monthly publications1 the ,gospel ,magazine3 one paragraph ,i shall insert1 see vol4 #i1 page #cgb4 8,the doctrine of the total abolition of the covenant of works1 and the perfect deliverance of all true ,believers from its power and authority1 by the substitution1 obedience1 and atonement of ,christ1 breaks the arms of ungodliness1 demolishes the whole empire of sin1 and makes the church of the first born fruitful to ,god4 ,fruitful in heart1 fruitful in life1 fruitful in every good work4 ,the proof which the ,scriptures afford of the truth of these assertions1 mocks all contradiction1 and bids defiance to all assault40
