#aiae ,,the ,,rosary --- ,,the name ,rosary signifies a crown of roses2 and well does this devotion deserve1 by just right1 a name so beautiful4 ,the rose is the most beautiful of flowers and ravishes our senses with its beauty and perfume2 and there is no delight that can equal the heavenly enchantment of the spiritual sweetness which is exhaled from this beautiful prayer4 ,the ,rosary is a spiritual garland of mystic roses with which we deck the brow of ,mary--a diadem which reflects the joy and brilliance1 the purity and fecundity of the glorious ,queen of ,heaven4 ,the flowers which we weave are not of this earth1 but are indigenous to ,paradise1 and were transplanted by an angel's hand from their native soil to bloom and flourish among the weeds and thistles of this miserable and sinful world4 ,there is no form of prayer more efficacious1 or more excellent and acceptable before ,heaven than ,mary's own devotion1 the ,rosary4 ,there is nothing that the great ,holy ,father1 ,pope ,leo ,,xiii1 urged more upon the ,church than the devout practice of reciting the beads in her honor4 ,the devotion of the ,holy ,rosary was revealed to ,st4 ,dominic by the ,blessed ,virgin ,mary1 who commanded him to preach it throughout the world2 and hence the ,rosary has ever been the spiritual heritage and distinct property of the ,dominican ,order4 ,the ,rosary is adapted to the learned and the ignorant1 and to every capacity4 ,the form and matter are intelligible to the most illiterate1 and yet so sublime as to be matter of contemplation worthy of the highest intellect4 ,moreover1 the ,rosary is not only a most sublime and perfect devotion1 but there is no devotion in the ,church which is enriched with more precious and valuable helps to salvation2 and there is nothing1 outside the ,holy ,sacrifice1 that can profit the living and the dead equal to the pious recitation of the ,rosary4 ,the ,form and ,matter of the ,rosary ,the ,rosary consists in the recitation1 in honor of the ,most ,holy ,virgin ,mary1 ,mother of ,god1 of the ,angelic ,salutation one hundred and fifty times1 distributed into fifteen decades2 each decade being preceded by the ,lord's ,prayer and accompanied by meditation on one of the principal mysteries of our ,divine ,saviour and terminated by the doxology or ,glory be to the ,father1 etc4 ,the vocal prayer is the matter1 the body of this exercise2 the meditation on the fifteen mysteries is the form1 and1 as it were1 the soul of this prayer4 ,the ,rosary is divided into three parts2 each part contains five mysteries and is called a chaplet4 ,the first part consists of the five joyful mysteries2 the second1 of the five sorrowful2 and the third1 of the five glorious mysteries4 ,manner of ,reciting the ,rosary ,the method of reciting the ,rosary practiced by the ,dominicans is as follows3 ,in the name of the ,father1 etc4 ,v4 ,hail ,mary1 full of grace1 the ,lord is with thee4 ,r4 ,blessed art thou among women1 and blessed is the fruit of thy womb--,jesus4 ,v4 ,thou1 ,o ,lord1 wilt open my lips4 ,r4 ,and my tongue shall announce ,thy praise4 ,v4 ,incline unto my aid1 ,o ,god4 ,r4 ,o ,lord1 make haste to help me4 ,glory be to the ,father1 etc41 ,alleluia4 7,from ,septuagesima to ,easter1 instead of ,alleluia1 say ,praise by to ,thee1 ,o ,lord1 ,king of eternal glory47 ,then announce either the first part of the holy ,rosary1 the five joyful mysteries1 or the second part of the holy ,rosary1 the five sorrowful mysteries1 or the third part of the holy ,rosary1 the five glorious mysteries4 ,then the first mystery1 ,the ,annunciation1 etc41 and ,our ,father once1 ,hail ,mary ten times1 ,glory be to the ,father once2 in the meantime1 meditating on the mystery4 ,after reciting five decades1 the ,hail1 ,holy ,queen is said1 followed by ,v4 ,queen of the most holy ,rosary1 pray for us4 ,r4 ,that we may be made worthy of the promises of ,christ4 ,let ,us ,pray ,o ,god1 whose only begotten ,son1 by ,his life1 death and resurrection1 has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life1 grant1 we beseech ,thee1 that1 meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy ,rosary of the ,blessed ,virgin ,mary1 we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise4 ,through the same ,christ our ,lord4 ,amen4 ,the ,five ,joyful ,mysteries 7,assigned for ,mondays and ,thursdays throughout the year1 the ,sundays in ,advent and after ,epiphany till ,lent47 ,like scenes of some wondrous drama these ,mysteries set before us the joys of the life of our ,saviour4 ,one by one the scenes are unfolded--each telling its story1 conveying its ,gospel lesson to the human soul4 ,before our mental view pass the personages mentioned in ,god's ,book4 ,here are ,mary the humble1 ,joseph the obedient1 ,elizabeth the prayerful1 ,simeon the just1 the angels on earth and in heaven--all bending in lowly reverence before ,jesus1 the grand central figure of the ,rosary devotion4 ,our minds the death of the ,cross1 how fitting that ,mary1 his ,mother1 should in the moment of her greatest exaltation teach us the lesson of ,humility4 ,pride wrought the ruin of legions of angels2 through pride our first parents sinned in the ,garden of ,happiness4 ,by humility our salvation was achieved--the humility of the ,word of ,god4 ,in our pride we have disobeyed ,god's holy law4 ,through humble penance are we to regain ,god's favor4 ,o ,mary1 humble hand-maid of the ,lord1 pray that we know our own unworthiness6 ,second ,joyful ,mystery3 ,the ,visitation ,and ,mary rising up in those least brethren6 ,third ,joyful ,mystery3 ,the ,nativity ,and she brought forth her first-born ,son1 and wrapped ,him in swaddling clothes1 and laid ,him in a manger2 because there was no room for them in the inn4--7,st4 ,luke1 ,,ii1 #g47 ,poverty ,wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger is ,jesus on the night of ,his birth4 ,the world had forgotten the richness of being poor4 ,it was needful that ,jesus should enter into the world in poverty to teach the lesson of detachment from earthly things4 ,in the ,crib of ,bethlehem1 as from the ,mount1 ,christ teaches the self-same lesson3 ,blessed are the poor in spirit1 for theirs is the ,kingdom of ,heaven4 ,if we possess worldly goods1 let us act as ,god's faithful stewards1 giving liberally to the poor of ,christ2 if poverty be our lot1 let us not murmur against ,god's ,holy will1 but rather thank ,god we are saved from the many temptations of riches4 ,mary1 lover of poverty1 teach us to seek first the ,kingdom of ,god4 ,fourth ,joyful ,mystery3 ,the ,presentation ,and after the days of her purification1 according to the law of ,moses1 were accomplished1 they carried ,him to ,jerusalem1 to present ,him to the ,lord4 ,as it is this difference between every other tragedy played out on the wide stage of the earth and the ,tragedy of ,christ1 that each one of us acted a sad part in making our ,divine ,saviour suffer4 ,when sorrow for our sins brings tears of humble repentance to our eyes1 let us still look up to the ,cross--the ,symbol of ,hope4 ,and ,i1 if ,i be lifted up from the earth1 will draw all things to myself4 rulers of the ,church1 the ,pope says3 ,for these reasons the ,roman ,pontiffs have ever given the highest praise to this ,sodality of our ,lady4 ,innocent ,,vii called it 'a most devout ,confraternity4' ,pius ,v declared that by its virtue ',christians began suddenly to be transformed into other men1 the darkness of heresy to be dispelled1 and the light of ,catholic faith to shine forth4' ,we also1 ,venerable ,brethren1 moved by the example of our predecessors1 earnestly exhort and conjure you1 as we have often done1 to devote special care to this sacred warfare1 so that by your efforts fresh forces may be daily enrolled on every side4 ,through you and those of your clergy who have the care of souls1 let the people know and duly appreciate the efficacy of this ,sodality and its usefulness for man's salvation4 ,to the faithful laity the ,pontiff's fatherly words are no less strong3 ,for this reason do we exhort all ,christians to give themselves to the daily recital of this pious devotion either in public or privately in the home or family of each4 ,we believe it to be in the designs of ,providence that1 in these times of trials for the ,church1 the ancient devotion to the august ,virgin should live and flourish4 ,may the ,christian people1 excited by our exhortations and inflamed by your appeals1 now seek the protection of ,mary with an ardor growing greater day by day4 ,let them betake themselves more and more to the protection of ,mary1 and trust in ,her4 ,let them cling more and more to the practice of the ,rosary1 to which our ancestors had recourse as an ever-ready refuge in misfortune1 and as a glorious pledge and proof of ,christian faith and devotion4 ,the heavenly ,patroness of the human race will receive with joy these prayers and supplications1 and will easily obtain that the good grow in goodness1 and that the erring repent and be brought back to salvation2 that ,god1 who is the avenger of crime1 moved to compassion and mercy1 shall deliver ,christendom and civil society from their present dangers1 and restore to them that peace which is so much desired4 ,encouraged by this hope1 we beseech ,god ,himself1 with the
