ten years' experience as ,superintendent in ,minnesota1 and brief work in the ,new ,west as ,missionary ,secretary of the ,a4 ,h4 ,m4 ,s41 was able to say1 we speak what we do know in pleading for the housing of the new churches on the frontier4 ,he also makes a forceful appeal for helping them to parsonages as a piece of policy in the economy and efficiency of home mission work4 ,dr4 ,h4 ,c4 ,hayden1 of the ,american ,board1 with singular felicity1 earnestness and variation1 poured out his soul in behalf of the outlying regions4 ,he1 too1 had maps2 they were of ,china1 ,japan and ,africa1 and right eloquent were they in their appeals to the head and heart through the eye4 ,dr4 ,o4 ,h4 ,white1 ,secretary of the ,british ,freedmen's ,aid ,society1 co-operative with the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 in behalf of ,africa1 for the first half of the tour represented our cause1 portraying the interest of ,english ,christians in this work1 delineating from his ample study the country1 the people1 and the prospect of missions in ,africa1 and also reporting the condition and progress of our schools and churches in the ,south4 ,for the last part of the course our ,field ,superintendent1 as a 8returned missionary0 made report of his field1 representing also our work among the ,indians1 the ,chinese on the ,pacific ,coast1 and the ,mendi people in ,africa4 ,it was interesting to observe the harmony and inter-play of all the addresses1 and so of the several causes4 ,at each meeting there were representatives from neighboring churches1 up to seven or eight in number1 so that1 in all1 the words of the brethren were heard by messengers from one hundred churches1 by one hundred of our own ministers1 by thirty-five pastors in other denominations1 and1 through an estimate1 by seven or eight thousand people4 ,these1 too1 were representative people2 they would report what they had heard2 and when they told the non-attendants how much they had lost1 this1 too1 would be a valuable testimony4 ,pastors not unfrequently announced a quickened interest1 and promised to be yet more diligent in presenting these related interests of all the churches2 they found that the calling in of these brethren was of the nature of using experts in behalf of the respective modes of ,christian propagandism4 ,the men of the corps were delighted with the heartiness of their reception everywhere1 and came back with an increased love for the ,lord's dear people whom they had met and tried to serve4 ,doubtless good was done in sowing seed1 which will appear in future fruitfulness in prayer and sympathy and contributions for these several causes1 which are one4 ,as the huntsman looks for his game after the fire1 we shall be looking for the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 bagging out in that country1 which one of our representatives says is the finest part of the ,united ,states4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,christianization ,,of ,,our ,,country ,,for ,,the ,,sake ,,of ,,the ,,world4 ,that is the loftiest argument for home missions4 ,god evidently intended that this should be made a great missionary nation4 ,if it had been discovered and settled much earlier we should have had simply a transference of the old world civilization1 with all of its spiritual despotism4 ,as it was1 ,south ,america and ,mexico did receive that inheritance1 and our territory1 once claimed by the ,pope1 and actually recognized as belonging to the ,catholic countries ,france and ,spain1 as appears from old maps and globes1 has barely escaped by the overruling of ,providence1 which has given it to the ,english-speaking ,protestantism1 and by the evangelism developed through ,american ,christianity4 ,prof4 ,phelps was right when he wrote3 8,were ,i a missionary in ,canton1 my first prayer every morning would be for ,america in behalf of ,canton40 ,this idea gives a grandeur to the march of the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society across the continent4 ,the course of missionaries is now largely changed4 ,once they set sail from our shores eastward1 now they cross our national domain to go westward4 ,we cry1 all hail1 to that right wing of ,immanuel's army that is sweeping the land from ocean to ocean4 ,already our own ,american ,board is finding the ,west its best hunting-ground for missionaries to go abroad4 ,it is even going into the cabins of the frontiersmen1 as well as to the ,western ,theological ,seminaries1 to find its consecrated men and women4 ,and this is proving to be choice material to make our ,lord's world-conquerors out of4 ,men who have lifted up axes upon the thick trees1 and have come into contact with affairs1 have the hardy stuff needed in the work abroad4 ,so the ,american ,missionary ,association is the left wing of the ,congregational corps that is seeking to subdue this realm to our ,king1 the ,christ4 ,to this end was its former work at the ,west1 where it had its seventy-nine home missionaries4 ,to this end is its scheme for helping in the evangelizing of the ,aborigines1 who have made way for us to build up our nation4 ,to this end is our movement in behalf of the six millions of our colored fellow-citizens2 a movement which1 as we are humbly grateful to be able to say1 ,god has made great4 ,to this end is our mission among the ,chinese1 whom ,god has wondrously brought to our door to receive the ,gospel4 ,now1 all of this1 primarily for the sake of our country1 is clearly1 in the divine purpose1 also for the sake of the world4 ,why did ,god just now make such a junction as that of the marvelous opening of ,africa to science1 commerce and the ,gospel1 along with the emancipation of the ,african slaves in our country8 ,everybody says1 it must have been that these ,christianized ,africo-,americans might have an open way for carrying back to their native land1 as pilgrims1 the same blessings which the original pilgrims had brought to this new world from the old4 ,nothing could be grander than this process of helping our brethren of the ,south on to a degree of attainment that will fit them to become the ,puritan element that may yet leaven that dark continent4 ,not simply may we send over there the cultivated professional men and helping women1 but who knows but that1 by and by1 as ,ireland has been emptied several times into this country--live freight being easier of shipment than dead--so may masses of our 8,americans falsely called ,africans10 as ,lewis ,tappan used to say1 go over with intelligent purpose to take ,africa for their home1 almost transporting civilization in bulk4 ,so our whole work on the ,california coast is a grand training school to fit native missionaries for ,china1 not simply to raise up nominal preachers and teachers to go back to father land1 but to make ,christians of the many1 who1 by virtue of their discipleship1 shall be commissioned of the ,lord to go forth bearing the ,gospel1 even as the early ,christians went forth everywhere preaching the ,word4 ,such an infusion of ,gospel leaven will be one of the most hopeful features of the ,christian propaganda in the ,celestial ,empire4 ,and so here we find the confirmation of the field and the work of this ,association4 ,we are put in trust with the care of these three depressed races dwelling by our side--in trust for their good1 for our country's welfare--in trust for the sake of ,africa and ,china and all the world4 ,as these three peoples are here to stay1 and as they will ever need the foster care of their more favored brothers of the common family1 we find herein the justification and the demand for far-sighted and long-continuous plans on the part of this body for the lifting up of all these three classes of lowly poor1 in order to their own elevation1 in order to the evangelization of our country1 in order to the salvation of the world4 ,equally clear providential indications may yet point the way to a work among the ,southern white people1 as soon as the caste prejudice shall melt away under the benign influence of ,gospel light and love4 ,and thus all the races--as in ,christ ,jesus there is neither ,jew nor ,greek1 there is neither bond nor free--shall be united not only in ,christian sympathy and fellowship at home1 but in the blessed work of carrying the pure ,gospel of ,christ to all the lands and peoples of the world4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,gentleman1 who for a dozen years has been a member of the ,senate of ,maryland1 drops in at our rooms occasionally from interest in our work4 ,the last time he was in he spoke of a colored young ,catholic1 who was among the number of those who were taken over to ,london to be educated for the priesthood and to be returned to labor among the freedmen in that office4 ,the ,doctor said that the young man had returned with a fine education1 but had abandoned the idea of taking orders4 ,he was now teaching school1 but his highest ambition was to become a porter in a large library4 ,as this is the first and only one of those young men1 of whom so much was said at one time1 to be identified by us1 we are glad to hear from him4 ,of course1 this one case does not carry the whole1 but surely it does not expressed a strong desire to meet at least one evening in the week for instruction4 ,the idea of forming themselves into a temperance society was suggested to them1 and they decided upon a speedy organization4 ,accordingly1 on the evening of ,april #fth1 about a dozen young men met in our little school room1 and proceeded to organize the first temperance society in ,st4 ,augustine4 ,after the election of the various officers1 the evening was devoted to music4 ,miss ,bowker had previously taught them several temperance melodies4 ,mrs4 ,mayhew1 of ,orange1 ,n4,j41 who was boarding in town and greatly interested in the welfare of the colored people1 was present4 ,she was a sweet singer1 and drilled them in two or three new pieces4 ,on the #acth1 there was an increase of numbers4 ,mr4 ,berrian1 from ,new ,york1 was invited to address the young men4 ,he gave them excellent counsel1 and read the simple pledge he had prepared1 explaining its binding obligations4 ,we did not wish any to sign that night1 as we desired them to give the subject careful consideration4 ,a week later1 on the #bjth1 there was a large attendance4 ,the good friend who was with them the previous week plainly stated the object of the meeting4 ,he exhorted them not to do anything rashly2 and read the ,constitution he had drawn up for the ,society1 with the following simple pledge attached3 8,we hereby solemnly pledge ourselves to abstain from the use of all intoxicating liquors1 or drinks1 as a beverage40 ,a few moments of solemn silence followed the announcement1 8,we are now ready for signatures to this pledge10 which was broken by one after another rising and stating1 in a clear and intelligent manner1 his reasons for signing the pledge4 ,many of their remarks were truly affecting4 ,one young man said1 8,a gentleman1 who went ,north to-day1 offered me a bottle of whisky4 ,i said1 #8,i thank you1 sir2 but ,i have joined a temperance society1 and am going to-night to sign the pledge1 so please excuse me for not accepting it4'0 ,another referred to his beastly intoxication on the ,christmas day before1 and resolved that the return of that day should find him a different man4 ,the first to sign was the ,president1 who is even to this day their leader4 ,i think no word was uttered during the signing of the pledge4 ,the firm1 manly footstep and scratch of the pen were the only sounds heard4 ,sixteen names were affixed1 and the signatures ceased for that time4 ,then the organization was completed4 ,the name ,lincoln ,temperance ,society 7since changed to ,independent ,lincoln ,temperance ,society7 was adopted4 ,some temperance songs were sung1 and those young men went quietly and thoughtfully to their homes--nobler1 indeed1 for the onward step they had taken4 ,on our return in the fall1 we found that the young ,society had steadily grown in strength and numbers4 ,not one of the 8sixteen0 had violated his pledge1 though often and sorely tempted to do so4 ,such abstinence was very praise-worthy in a community where drinking was the universal custom4 ,the ,freedmen's ,bureau had erected for us a new school building1 in one of the rooms of which the ,society held its meetings every ,monday evening4 ,april #bj1 #ahgj1 the ,lincoln ,temperance ,society celebrated its first anniversary4 ,the membership had rolled up to #ed4 ,female members had been admitted during the year1 and the good the ,society had accomplished was clearly perceptible in the elevated tone and manners of the young people4 ,several white friends were present on this room and library on the lower floor4 ,the building is nicely lathed and plastered1 and painted4 ,the young men of the ,society are using every means to elevate our people to respectability and picturesque and really wonderful granite formations4 ,traversing a fine hard gravel plain1 which gave us an extensive view1 we passed the half-way mark1 a huge pile of granite boulders4 ,we then came into a mountain region1 said to be infested with robbers4 ,it is true that here1 not very long ago1 a caravan was attacked in the night and robbed1 and some of the parties killed4 ,we had come a long journey1 the place was convenient for camping1 and some one proposed that we should spend the night here2 but the guides manifested great fear1 and would not give their consent4 ,they said it was bad enough at the wady ,kokreb1 but under no circumstances would they stop this side of the wady4 ,some of us were ahead of the caravan1 and we took the advice of the guides1 and pushed on for the wady4 ,soon after arriving and selecting the spot for our camp1 and while waiting for the caravan to come up1 we were visited by a couple of suspicious-looking men1 who asked a few questions1 and after looking us well over disappeared in the bush4 ,the guides said they were spies of the robbers1 and advised us to fire off our guns and revolvers1 to let them know that we were well armed1 which we did4 ,in about half an hour the rest of the party and the caravan came up4 ,they reported having met twelve mounted men1 who acted suspiciously in the dark4 ,mr4 ,moussalli called to them in ,arabic1 and demanded who they were and what they wanted4 ,they admitted that they were robbers4 ,they were then told that our party was all armed1 and that if they came near the caravan they would get into trouble4 ,we formed our camp in a circle1 spreading our baggage around us for a protection as best we could1 and then went to sleep with our hands on our revolvers1 trusting for our safety1 now that to more than twice that of the increase of ,chinese population4 ,fifteen schools have been sustained1 eleven of them throughout the entire year4 ,thirty-one workers are employed1 eleven of them being
