,executive ,committee1 the plan having been approved by a conference of our leading workers1 held last winter4 ,professor ,albert ,salisbury1 of the ,wisconsin ,state ,normal1 at ,whitewater1 is the man4 ,in the growth of this department1 and in the purpose of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 to do the very best work in its institutions1 it was found needful to secure one who1 as an expert in school processes1 should help to the most approved methods of organization1 of discipline1 of instruction and of unification4 ,professor ,salisbury had been assigned by his ,state to the specialty of conducting teachers' institutes4 ,in the same way he will serve our teachers and the native teachers whom they have raised up4 ,prominent educators and the ,wisconsin and ,boston journals of education have commended him as the right man for the place4 ,dr4 ,roy will continue in his service as ,field ,superintendent1 giving yet more attention to the church work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a mission at ,hong ,kong had been proposed to this ,association as a means of gathering into fellowship the ,chinese who may have returned from this country to their native land as ,christians4 ,it seemed to some that such a work would be cognate to ours on the ,pacific ,coast4 ,but as it is the purpose of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 not to extend its missionary operations abroad1 our ,executive ,committee proposed to the ,american ,board that it take up the mission at ,hong ,kong1 and so work in harmony with our operations on the coast4 ,we are glad to report that this overture has been cordially acceded to1 and that the ,american ,board accepts this 8sacred trust40 ,and hence the rejoicing of ,mr4 ,pond in his letter1 to be found at the proper place4 ,now1 will not our good friends bear in mind our mission on the worthy of attention1 has recently appeared in the ,atlantic ,monthly under the title of 8,,studies ,,in ,,the ,,south40 ,the name of the author is not given1 but internal evidence shows that he is a ,northern man who went ,south to study its problems with an honest purpose to get at the facts rather than sustain any pet theories4 ,he was free in his intercourse with people of all classes and colors1 and is very frank in his report of what he says4 ,his statements as to the political situation are somewhat startling1 yet correct1 as we think4 ,it is1 however1 his view of the deeper questions of the condition and prospects of the masses of the people1 white and colored1 that we are most concerned about1 and we give a few extracts on these points4 99 99 99 99 99 ,it is with profound sorrow that we note the death by drowning of two adult sons of ,rev4 ,j4 ,a4 ,r4 ,rogers1 now the pastor of a ,presbyterian ,church at ,shawano1 ,wis4 ,all our readers are familiar with the heroic labors and endurance of ,mr4 ,rogers before and after the war1 in building up the college and church at ,berea1 ,ky4 ,the names and birthplaces of the sons are historic4 ,william ,norris was born at ,berea in #ahei1 and ,lewis ,fairchild was born in ,ohio1 while the family were in exile on account of the war4 ,the eldest was a graduate of ,berea and was a teacher there the last year1 active1 useful and greatly beloved4 ,lewis ,fairchild at the time of his decease was a member of the senior class in ,olivet ,college4 8,lovely and pleasant in their lives2 in their death they were not divided40 ,multitudes of our friends will be afflicted in this bereavement of our brother and his companion4 99 99 99 99 99 ,one of our old friends writes3 8,do the colleges and literary institutions supported by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 prohibit the use of tobacco1 as well as of intoxicating liquors1 among their students1 as ,oberlin does80 ,we are happy to inform him and all other friends that this is the rule in all of our schools1 and that they would be delighted to observe the freedom of all our school buildings from the pollution of tobacco4 ,it is a fine element in the formation of character1 as well as a matter of health and of economy4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,national ,,aid ,,for ,,national ,,education4 ,the title is its own argument4 ,it is the instinct of self-preservation4 ,if one member suffer1 the whole body suffers4 ,congress has adjourned without passing the proposed law4 ,it was to appropriate #aj1jjj1jjj annually for five years1 and to distribute the same among the ,states and ,territories in the proportion of illiteracy4 ,there is no doubt that some such bill will yet be passed4 ,at this ratio1 the former slave ,states would receive seven and a half millions out of the ten4 ,that the ,north heartily agrees to this has been a grateful surprise to the ,south4 ,the scheme would not have been thought of1 except for the need of it in that section4 ,the question may1 then1 be raised3 ,what would be the relation of such aid to the work of this ,association8 ,it would greatly increase the demand for the training of common school teachers in our normal schools and colleges4 ,the three months of country schools would be raised to six4 ,the increased facilities would tend to lead the people to call for a better quality of teachers4 ,dr4 ,barnas ,sears1 the late ,secretary of the ,peabody ,fund1 learned that one competent teacher introduced1 led to the displacement of a half-dozen incompetents4 ,the training of the teachers is the wholesale business in the process of education4 ,then1 it is of the utmost importance that these teachers of the millions should themselves have that moral and religious preparation which our missionary institutions seek to impart1 so that the lessons of morality1 and virtue and piety shall be taught1 along with the elements of a common education4 ,the ,house committee1 in their report1 state that1 according to the census of #ahhj1 #d1gae1cie persons at the ,south over ten years of age1 or #gj4ef per cent41 are not able to write4 ,to raise up the qualified teachers for this illiterate mass will tax the resources of all the institutions founded in that region by the benevolence of the ,north4 ,government aid will still leave another demand upon our style of schools1 viz41 that which shall furnish industrial training4 ,the old-time colored mechanics1 who had been taught trades1 which greatly increased their value in the market1 are passing away4 ,scarcely any of the young men are now learning trades1 for the reasons that white mechanics will not take them1 that the colored tradesmen have not capital enough to employ them1 and that too many of them have seen enough of working for board and clothes in the case of father and mother1 not taking into the account the large and steady wages to come by and by4 ,as it is going now1 let the old colored mechanics pass away1 and the skilled artisans coming from ,europe will press in to fill the demand2 and then the ,africo-,american citizens will be driven to the wall and forced back to be mere hewers of wood and drawers of water4 ,the first demand upon our schools was to open the doors of knowledge to millions of starving intellects2 but now1 more and more1 must we push industrial training to help the people in the coming crisis1 which they do not forecast as readily as do their friends who have studied the problem of their bondage and their freedom4 ,so then1 along with books and the art of school teaching1 we must train the girls to the trades of cooking1 of dressmaking1 of nursing1 of type-setting1 of running knitting and sewing machines2 we must teach the boys carpentry1 blacksmithing1 shoe and harness making1 agriculture1 the raising of improved stock and the running of machinery4 ,national aid for public schools will still leave upon our institutions and the like the great business of the higher education4 ,for a portion of the people this is demanded4 ,if they are to maintain themselves in their citizenship they must have the first quality of education in their preachers1 professors1 lawyers1 doctors1 journalists1 scientists4 ,in their general advancement they are already requiring more and more of cultivation in their preachers4 ,with some congregations even now only the most thorough classical and professional training can satisfy the demands of their pulpits1 while in the other professions nothing else can succeed4 ,the public schools will prepare the material1 and make the greater demand for the higher institutions1 such as we are developing4 ,and so we find that national aid1 if granted1 will only be a national call for our scheme of advanced education4 ,then1 if such a law is passed1 it is proposed to run only five years4 ,and yet the generations of children will still be sweeping on and we must make our patriotic and missionary propagandism to keep up with them4 99 99 99 99 99 ,an important meeting of the ,national ,education ,assembly was held at ,ocean ,grove1 ,n4,j41 ,aug4 #h1 #i4 ,the audiences were large1 and many prominent educators were present from various parts of the country4 ,the opening address was by ,hon4 ,john ,eaton1 ,u4,s4 ,commissioner of ,education1 in which it was held that the national government is the only agency able to cope with illiteracy in the country4 ,a feature of special interest was the showing of the work of the ,northern churches in the ,south since the war4 ,dr4 ,strieby1 of ,new ,york1 represented the ,congregationalists2 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,j4 ,m4 ,gregory1 of ,illinois1 the ,baptists2 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,r4 ,h4 ,allen1 of ,pennsylvania1 the ,presbyterians2 and ,rev4 ,dr4 ,j4 ,c4 ,hartzell1 of ,louisiana1 the ,methodists4 ,it appeared that more than #aj1jjj1jjj have been spent by this agency1 and that more than #ae1jjj students are now in schools of higher grade1 thus supported4 ,bishop ,simpson1 ,dr4 ,h4 ,a4 ,butz1 president of ,drew ,theological ,seminary1 and ,senator ,blair of ,new ,hampshire1 made addresses4 ,the sentiments of the ,assembly were formulated in a memorial to ,congress4 ,a ,national ,education ,committee was organized to continue the effort to secure national aid4 ,the secretary of the committee will reside in ,washington1 and efforts to influence public opinion in favor of the end in view will be earnestly prosecuted4 ,the following is an extract from a letter sent to the president of the ,assembly1 ,rev4 ,j4 ,c4 ,hartzell1 ,d4,d41 from ,hon4 ,h4 ,m4 ,teller1 ,secretary of the ,interior3 8,the great mass of the people must depend on the public school system for the education of their children4 ,an efficient public school system1 extending to all the ,state1 and affording equal facilities for education to all classes of children1 free from rate bills1 cannot be too highly prized4 99 99 99 ,i recognize it to be the duty of the ,state to provide for the education of the children within its borders2 but if the ,state neglects or refuses so to do1 ,i think it is clearly within the power of the general government to provide such school facilities4 ,but1 fortunately1 there is no ,state in which no provision for public education is made1 and therefore the occasion for the exercise of this power does not exist1 except as auxiliary to that of the ,state4 ,i believe that in all the ,states the sentiment in favor of educating the children is so strong that the action required by the general government would be simply to make and wisely disburse proper appropriations1 so as to encourage and stimulate the ,states that are the least able to carry on the work by themselves4 ,to do this without seeming to discriminate in favor of certain ,states1 such appropriations ought to be based on the degree of illiteracy as shown by the last census4 8,if a system of public schools can be maintained for ten or fifteen years in any ,state1 there will be no danger of its abandonment4 8,an educated community will demand suitable educational facilities for the education of all classes of children4 ,so that we may reasonably hope that the appropriation from the national treasury need not extend beyond a period of ten or fifteen years40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,address ,,of ,,mr4 ,,butler ,r4 ,,wilson ,,at ,,the ,,boston ,,anniversary1 ,,may #ca1 #ahhb4 ,if ,i fail to be a good specimen1 do not attribute it to my race2 for my people were converted from a condition of chattel slavery into that of ,american citizenship1 depending almost entirely upon themselves4 ,what has been the result8 ,in spite of nearly #bj1jjj political murders since the war1 they have not all been killed2 nor1 at the present rate of increase1 is it reasonable to suppose that they all will be4 ,the prophecy of many good people1 many worthy people1 many earnest people1 that the ballot in the hand of the negro was a stick with which to break the government's head1 finds its answer in the fact that the most loyal and law-abiding citizens south of ,mason and ,dixon's line1 to-day1 are the ex-slaves4 ,with not enough land for a burial ground1 had they all died immediately after the war1 they now pay taxes on millions of dollars worth of real estate and personal property1 being assessed for nearly #aj1jjj1jjj in the ,state of ,georgia alone4 ,prior to the war there was a law throughout the ,south prohibiting a colored person from learning to read and write on penalty of losing the thumb or index finger1 so that what they now know in that direction they have acquired since the war2 and to-day ten per cent4 of the entire colored race in the ,south can read and write4 ,this ability1 on the part of the colored man1 is a great step in his progress1 for it introduces a new rule of computation in the ,southern arithmetic--the old rule being1 as you probably know1 in ,southern vernacular3 8,a naught is a naught and a figger is a figger2 ,put down the naught and carry the figger4 ,a naught is a naught and a figger is a figger4 ,all the cotton for the white man and none for the nigger40 ,what has produced these results8 ,mainly two things3 ,the inherent desire of the colored man to better his condition1 thus differing from his poor white neighbor2 and the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,taking up the work for which your honored dead died1 the ,association planted schools and churches in the ,south1 and supplied these schools and churches with men and women1 who had pluck enough and backbone enough to defy ,southern prejudice and ostracism2 and wherever one of these schools has been planted1 the change is marked4 ,lawlessness disappears1 property increases in value1 and the colored people purchase homes4 ,an ex-mayor of the city of ,atlanta1 at the dedication of the ,congregational ,church1 said that the thrift1 orderly habits and acquisition of property in a certain portion of that city were mainly due to the school and church of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,does the colored man sit with folded arms1 while the ,north1 ,great ,britain and ,africa--let me repeat ,africa--contribute for his civilization8 ,i say ,africa1 because1 sitting in the old ,midway ,church1 in ,liberty ,county1 ,ga41 sometime ago1 ,i heard read1 in the list of donations1 8,one dollar contributed by a church in ,south ,africa for the civilization of the heathen in ,america20 and there was nothing said in that donation1 either1 about the color of the heathen6 ,but are the colored people idle8 ,in one of the classes which graduated from the ,atlanta ,university not long ago1 were two married women who did their own house-work1 walked more than three miles through the red mud of ,georgia to school1 were punctual in attendance and graduated with honor4 ,in the same class was a married man who earned money to support his family1 kept up with his class in school1 preached for three country churches1 helped edit a readable newspaper1 and graduated with honor4 ,in one of the schools across the city1 an ,american ,missionary ,association school1 there is a woman who entered the night school1 finished that1 entered the day school1 has plodded on from class to class1 to-day in the graduating class holding a place of honor1 and she has earned her living and has purchased a home by sewing at the same time4 ,this school has done a great work2 yet the loyal people of that city1 of whom you heard not long ago such a beautiful report on this platform1 for some reason took a great antipathy to that school1 and1 in order to break it down1 established another school on the next corner1 a public school4 ,did the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 school suspend operations8 ,the #djj students1 paying one dollar a month1 increased to #fjj2 two new teachers were called from the ,oswego training school and a kindergarten school is soon to be annexed4 ,but1 in order that this school on the next corner might not suspend operations1 a woman who does her own washing and ironing1 cooks the meals of her husband1 and sends him off to his work early in the morning1 goes to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 school till #b o'clock in the afternoon1 and sends two of her children to the public school4 ,hundreds of such examples might be given1 even in the district schools taught by the students--examples of work and of sacrifice upon the part of both parents and scholars4 ,what would you think of a man fifty years old going to school that he might learn to read the ,bible1 earning his living by bottoming chairs at night by the light of a pine-knot fire8 ,no1 my friends1 the colored man is not idle2 if he were1 filibustering would not to-day be an item of business in the ,united ,states ,congress4 ,we know the ,american out-stretched hands bidding him ,god-speed in his way onward and upward4 ,the work has not all been done4 ,our schools need to be increased ten-fold4 ,each school needs a training department as an conspicuous illustration of this type in the person and work of a negro in one of the old ,southern ,states4 ,he could not read1 but had learned within a few years1 by instruction from his young wife1 to write well enough to enable him to 8keep the time0 of his hands by recording it in his book of farm accounts4 ,he had 8begun without nothin'10 he said4 ,at the end of the war he gathered up some 8lame and sick gov'ment mules that had been turned out fuh de crows1 an' doctor'd 'em up40 ,then he worked on the plantations near him1 at first by the day1 but soon began to rent land and 8hire this story was true4 ,this man reared cattle1 sheep1 and hogs1 and had better blooded animals than any other planter near him1 white or black4 ,he was saving all the manure that his farms yielded1 and drawing more from the town--8de profit's on de back load40 ,his fences were good1 and1 what is rare in the ,south1 the fence-rows were kept clean1 and free from weeds1 briars and bushes4 ,,the ,,fortunes ,,of ,,the ,,negroes4 ,many of the negroes are acquiring land1 and are farming successfully and profitably1 in nearly all parts of the ,south1 while multitudes of others still work as 8hired hands10 and save nothing1 consuming a large portion of their wages for intoxicating drinks4 ,the general inclination of the negroes to leave the plantations and congregate in the towns is injuring the race seriously1 in many ways4 ,there is not sufficient employment in the towns for those who are already there1 and great numbers become idle1 dissipated and vicious4 ,most of the colored people are better adapted to farm-work than to other occupations1 though many are doing well as mechanics1 blacksmiths1 carpenters1 bricklayers1 and plasterers4 ,in the towns and cities nearly all the cartmen and porters are negroes4 ,whatever may be the extent to which idleness prevails among them1 it is certain that the negroes perform a vast amount of labor which is not only necessary or convenient for their employers1 but highly profitable as well4 ,the labor of the colored people is at present an important and1 indeed1 indispensable factor in the chief wealth-producing industries of the ,south4 ,if the negroes could be brought to understand existing conditions and tendencies in the regions which they inhabit1 they might soon greatly improve their fortunes1 and secure for themselves and their children most important advantages from opportunities which are likely soon to pass away1 never to be presented again1 or at any rate1 not during the reign of the influences which are now becoming dominant in the ,south4 ,,black ,,ministers4 ,some of the colored preachers in most parts of the ,south are ignorant1 fat1 lazy and licentious4 ,many of them use intoxicating liquors freely4 ,the influence of such men is of course a curse to the colored people1 and is the cause of much immorality among the married women who are members of the 8colored churches40 ,but it would be most unjust to allow my readers to infer that colored ministers generally belong to this class4 ,here1 as in the description of all classes of people in the ,south1 discrimination is necessary4 ,the new order of things is manifesting itself in a conflict between opposing tendencies in the negro churches1 and among their ministers4 ,except in the larger towns1 most of the older ministers depend on mere noise and excitement to influence their hearers4 ,they work themselves into incoherent fury1 stamp and yell1 and appeal only to the 8feelings0 of their uninstructed followers4 ,these old men denounce 8de high-flyin' preachin' we has dese days40 ,they say 8it's all book-l'arnin'2 dey ain't no ,holy ,ghos' in it1 at all4 ,dis new religion mighty smaht1 an' mighty proud1 but it hain't got no feelin' to it40 ,there is a great deal of truth in this4 ,the more intellectual preaching of the younger educated men is ill suited to the tropical and impulsive nature of the colored people4 ,their life is far more a matter of instinct than of thought1 and to attempt to teach religion to them by means of appealing to their reason is to disarm religion at once of all its potency4 ,the preachers and missionaries who are best adapted to the peculiar conditions and needs of the colored people are the young men who have received an industrial education1 who have been trained to manual labor1 and have learned either farming or some mechanical art at such schools as the ,normal and ,agricultural ,institute at ,hampton1 ,virginia1 or the other admirable institutions of learning fostered by the ,american ,missionary ,association and the churches of the ,south4 ,of course1 this class is still very small1 but it comprises some excellent men1 whose influence is already widely felt in the ,south1 and is a potent factor in the soundest and most hopeful religious work now going on there4 ,,educating ,,the ,,negroes4 ,the foremost men in the ,southern ,states--,i mean those who are foremost in business1 and in the social and moral life and activities of the local communities--are everywhere taking up the subject of education for the negroes in a serious and business-like spirit4 ,i did not find anywhere1 except in ,southwestern ,texas1 any manifestation of prejudice against negro education1 or feeling of jealousy regarding the advancement of the colored people in intelligence or capability of self-elevation4 ,many of the ,southern people appear to me to be rather sanguine and extravagant in their expectations regarding the results of popular intellectual enlightenment4 ,they talk very much as ,horace ,mann and his fellow-laborers talked1 when they were beginning the intellectual revival which led to the establishment of the ,new ,england public-school system4 ,they will of course find1 as has been shown in the ,northern ,states1 that even after the public schools have educated the mass of the people1 other problems of a serious nature remain4 ,illustration3 ,,negro ,,prayer ,,meeting4 ,a ,,class ,,with ,,no ,,friends4 ,the negroes are being educated more rapidly1 in large portions of the ,south1 than are the people known as 8poor whites10 ,more interest is felt and greater efforts are made in behalf of the negroes than for this class of white people4 ,the negro has the advantage of being in the world's eye and mind4 ,he is somewhat picturesque1 and occupies a position of historic interest4 ,he has powerful friends4 ,the poor whites have no friends3 there is no picturesqueness1 no historic interest1 connected with their situation4 ,the leading white men of the ,southern ,states1 democrats1 seem to me to feel a more kindly interest in the negroes than in this class of poor people of their own race4 ,they know much more about them4 ,greater effort is likely to be made1 for a long time to come1 for the education and improvement of the negroes than for the advancement of the poor whites2 and yet the class is not at all so degraded or so worthless as is popularly believed4 ,these people are primitive in character1 and in the conditions and methods of their life1 but they are not degraded4 ,there is1 however1 great danger that many of them will be debased under the changed conditions of the new order of things in the ,south4 ,no other class in that portion of our country is so little understood1 or would better repay careful study4 ,it is highly important that the attention of thoughtful1 philanthropic and patriotic men1 both ,north and ,south1 should be directed to their position and probable tendencies in relation to the new life of the country in which they live4 ,in blood and inherited qualities they are not1 generally1 vicious or low4 ,but they have no friends1 no sympathy1 either ,north or ,south4 ,,mixed ,,schools ,,for ,,the ,,two ,,races4 ,there is one important feature or division of the subject of education in the ,southern ,states which ,i have not yet brought forward in these studies2 that is1 the question of separate or mixed schools for the two races4 ,the sentiment1 feeling and judgment of the ,southern people are at present strongly and almost universally opposed to the idea of educating white and black children1 or young people1 in the same schools4 ,but a change in this matter is already in progress4 ,after attentively studying the subject everywhere1 ,i am convinced that there will soon be mixed schools1 for white and colored children1 in many parts of the ,south4 ,there are already a few such schools1 and the effect of considerations of convenience1 cheapness and practical efficiency are likely1 ,i think1 to cause a rapid increase in their number4 ,i look for a decided revolution in ,southern thought and feeling within twenty years in regard to this subject4 ,a few of the most intelligent and far-seeing among ,southern leaders--some of the foremost 8,bourbons0--say that mixed schools are 8sure to come10 and they are not disturbed by the prospect4 ,,educational ,,work ,,of ,,the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,the educational work already accomplished in the ,south by the ,american ,missionary ,association is of a high character1 and it deserves all possible recognition and assistance4 ,the best ,southern people everywhere spoke of it gratefully and enthusiastically4 ,at the ,normal and ,agricultural ,institute1 ,hampton1 ,virginia2 ,talladega ,college1 in ,alabama2 ,tougaloo ,university1 ,mississippi2 ,tillotson ,normal ,school1 ,austin1 ,texas2 and at several other colleges and normal schools which ,i saw1 though the money endowments are scanty compared with the amounts which are needed1 the endowments in personal qualities and character1 as represented by the teachers1 are of a remarkably high order4 ,this is necessary1 for the work of educating the colored people of the ,south requires the best teachers that can be obtained4 ,in many of these institutions the boys learn something of various trades or mechanical operations1 and of farming1 and the girls are taught sewing1 cooking1 and the care of a house4 ,i examined a great number of the negro common and high schools1 which are taught by graduates and students of the colleges and normal schools which ,i have named1 and ,i think it wonderful that so many of these negro teachers are successful4 ,they have to struggle against many disadvantages1 but nearly all whom ,i saw had the confidence and respect of the leading white citizens where they were at work4 ,there were a few fools among them1 of course1 but a great majority appeared to be serious and sensible young men and women4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,africa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,dr4 ,,ladd',s ,,journal4 ,the space in the ,,missionary will only admit of a few extracts from the remainder of this long journal4 ,much that is ,mohammed ,achmet1 the 8,false ,prophet10 first distinguished himself1 saw his village and the spot where the first slaughter occurred4 ,they stopped at various other places of interest on the way1 and had a variety of experiences4 ,they studied the towns and the people in passing1 and although generally well received1 they had some difficulty to get wood1 on account of the hostility of the ,shillooks4 ,they became acquainted with the ,african fever among the swamps1 and were only too glad to reach ,fashoda4 ,friday1 ,feb4 #c;d4--,the steamer stopped1 before we awoke this morning1 for 8,dragomen0 reside in these4 ,we have a plan of ,fashoda1 which will give a better idea of it than any verbal picture4 ,we shall also take some photographs of it to illustrate a more detailed account in the report4 ,for this country the place is well fortified4 ,we could not anchor off the main land1 as the water was too low1 but tied up to an island opposite the town4 ,the other steamer and a few boats were lying here4 ,several ,dinka villages were just visible with the glass on the east shore4 ,on our arrival an officer came on board to search for slaves6 ,he proposed to examine our boxes4 ,but we told him there was no custom house here4 ,he might look for slaves1 but he could not examine any of our baggage4 ,he found it was no use1 and went off4 ,what a farce this suppression of the slave trade is6 ,men will live in ,fashoda1 and draw good salaries to suppress the slave trade4 ,when a steamer comes in1 like ours1 from ,khartoum1 they will come on board and look for slaves6 ,while right back of them is a regular caravan route1 over which thousands are carried every year1 and they go on their way1 and no questions are asked6 ,it looks well to have an officer in uniform examine government steamers1 and make a show of great things6 ,we sent our letters and orders up to the ,governor pro tem41 but he and his aid were already on their way to call on us4 ,we found them very pleasant and friendly4 ,saturday1 ,feb4 #dth4--,there was much noise and loud talking and confusion in unloading the steamer4 ,this would have been a good steamer for ,mohammed ,achmet to have captured1 as we brought down #bj1jjj ,turkish dollars1 besides powder1 cloth and soap4 ,took several views of ,fashoda as seen from the deck of the steamer4 ,the ,governor sent us a present of two sheep1 a quantity of chickens1 and a couple of baskets of vegetables4 ,we noticed here for the first time a species of crow with a white breast4 ,the ,dinkas on the east shore are said to be quiet and friendly4 ,fashoda is considered by everybody to be one of the most unhealthy spots on the ,white ,nile4 99 99 ,the town is surrounded with a thorn zeriba1 and is built up1 outside of the fort and the night2 ,i counted fourteen that ,i could see at one time4 ,the ,governor proposed to send a guard of soldiers with us to the ,sobat1 but we finally concluded that we would rather rely upon our own arms than have any such guard as he could furnish4 ,monday1 ,feb4 #fth4--,started about #d ,a4,m4 ,stopped for wood on the west side2 went ashore and looked about4 ,the ,captain will not go on shore1 nor allow us to do so1 without being well armed4 ,some ,shillooks came down to the shore apparently to barter4 ,we were warned to be on our guard4 ,they were absolutely naked1 and a wild looking set4 ,we were off as soon as we got wood enough4 ,passed a small island1 one end of which was literally covered with crocodiles4 ,there is almost a continuous stretch of ,shillook villages on both banks along here4 ,the men are all naked4 ,the language strikes one as very peculiar4 ,there are a number of palm trees in this vicinity with a bulge or swelling in the middle of the stem4 ,passed several villages of considerable size4 ,saw the village called ,o-,gawdie1 where the late ,king of the ,shillooks1 who was killed by ,mohammed ,achmet1 resided4 ,the natives in many places are burning the grass and getting ready to plant their farms4 ,we notice also various methods of fishing1 which for a wonder seem to be quite successful4 ,some large flies came on board along here1 and we found that they could bite4 ,at #g3cj we cast anchor in the ,sobat1 at a point some distance above its mouth1 and opposite the deserted military station4 ,we chose the middle of the stream as a matter of safety1 for although there are but a handful of people living near here1 yet they will swarm from the ,white ,nile1 and other parts1 at very short notice4 ,relays of three men each were placed on watch all night4 ,now that the military station is abandoned the country about here is not considered at all safe4 ,but here we are in the ,sobat at last6 ,after all our hopes and fears1 after all our journeyings over sea and land1 up the old ,nile and across the burning sands of the ,desert1 here we are at last6 ,we are twenty-five hundred miles up the ,nile4 ,we are more than eight thousand miles from home4 ,we are in ,central ,africa4 ,dr4 ,ladd and his party went up the ,sobat as far as was practicable1 and took a number of photographs of the country and the people4 ,they also went beyond the ,sobat junction of the ,white ,nile4 ,having successfully accomplished their mission1 they were obliged to return as speedily as possible on account of the increasing dangers that surrounded them4 ,they stopped at 8,tawfikeeyeh10 where ,sir ,samuel ,baker had his camp1 and at the towns of ,melacan and ,waw1 and took many interesting photographs of all these places4 ,they also visited with a guard among the ,shillook villages in the vicinity of ,fashoda4 ,we rode around ,fashoda outside of the zeriba of thorn bushes1 which had been put up as a protection to the place1 and then we struck across the plain to the village of ,hegag4 ,here we had a pleasant interview with the natives1 and saw a man who had received a bad bullet wound in the last fight with ,mohammed ,achmet4 ,i took a photograph of this village and of the chief's family4 ,after we had had quite a chat with these people we again mounted1 and1 taking a good road back1 we let our horses out on a full run1 to see what an ,arab horse could do4 ,all the horses seemed to enjoy it1 and certainly we did1 after the cramped life we had been leading on board of the steamer4 ,as we approached ,fashoda the mounted guard1 now always on the alert and fearing an attack from ,mohammed ,achmet at any time1 spied us coming at full speed1 and thinking something might be wrong1 rode out to meet us4 ,there is a constant fear that at any moment the place may be attacked1 and a most vigilant watch is kept4 ,we rode around the town1 took a photograph of the market place and then returned to our lodgings on the steamer4 ,here we were waited upon by a number of men who had all sorts of favors to ask4 ,one was a convict and wanted help2 another wished us to present some petitions for him at ,khartoum4 ,toward evening we called upon the ,governor at his private house2 had a pleasant visit1 and obtained much valuable information about the natives and the country4 ,on our return ,i took a photograph of some native women cooking durra4 ,by a careful calculation from latitude and declination1 ,i find that the time of sunrise this morning was #f3aj and the time of sunset was #e3ej4 ,in this way only are we able to regulate our watches4 99 99 99 ,speaking of ,kaka1 ,dr4 ,ladd says3 ,the small garrison of #ej men is practically in a state of siege4 ,they can get no supplies1 and are actually afraid to go more than a few steps beyond their zeriba4 ,kaka is thus threatened both by the ,shillooks and the followers of ,mohammed ,achmet1 and there is much fear expressed on all sides4 ,this whole section of country is considered very dangerous and unsafe4 ,we are repeatedly told3 8,it is well that you are armed2 don't go on shore without your arms40 ,there certainly seem to be perilous times ahead1 for things are constantly getting worse1 and the government has delayed to act until action means war4 ,there is a young ,greek merchant on board with whom ,i have been brushing up my ,greek4 ,he is from ,fashoda and expected to stop here1 but is frightened out of it1 and says he shall go on to ,khershawal1 which is on the other side of the river1 and a place of less danger4 ,he says1 and others agree with him1 that there are spies everywhere who keep the rebels posted as to every movement4 ,one man is now in irons at ,fashoda who was found with a letter on his person directed to ,mohammed ,achmet1 telling him the condition of the forces at ,fashoda and urging him to come on at once and take the place4 ,threats have been made that if the government does not send on an army at once the rebels will take ,fashoda within #bj days4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the town of ,kaka is built of mud-smeared straw huts1 surrounded with a zeriba4 ,the fort is built of mud1 boasts one cannon1 and is surrounded by a dry moat4 ,one of the officers presented ,doctor with a young red-crested crane4 ,after we had sufficiently examined the fort and town we took the photograph of a ,dinka woman whose person was a marvel of bas-relief work1 and also a general view of the town4 ,we were presented through the 8,yousbashi0 with a couple of baskets of a seed called 8sutcheb10 and were assured that it is a sure cure for dysentery4 ,saw one soldier who ought to have been shot on the spot for insubordination4 ,the ,governor ordered him to accompany the durra to the town as a guard1 and he flatly and most emphatically refused to budge4 ,the ,governor tried to reason with him and urge him1 but he grew more and more obstreperous1 till finally1 the governor slapped him in the face1 and1 after a tussle1 took his gun away from him4 ,the ,governor tried to have some one arrest him1 but no one would do it1 and finally the man got his gun back1 and did as he pleased4 ,what discipline can there be in an army where such things are possible8 ,very soon there was another fight1 and this time on the steamer4 ,we were about to put off4 ,doctor and ,i were standing on the bridge4 ,a soldier rushed on board claiming an 8angarib10 or native bed1 which did not belong to him2 but he was bound to come on board and take it by force4 ,the ,captain ordered him on shore4 ,he refused to go4 ,the ,captain undertook1 with the help of his sailors1 to put him off the boat1 and there was a fight at once4 ,other soldiers rushed in to help their comrade1 and it looked for a few minutes as though the crew might be overpowered4 ,instinctively our hands found their way to our revolvers1 and we stood ready to defend the ,captain if it should become necessary4 ,after a pretty general fight1 the soldiers were obliged to retreat4 ,the plank was drawn in1 and to settle all questions of ownership1 the 8angarib0 was broken up and thrown overboard4 ,tuesday1 ,feb4 #adth4--,we were up early this morning1 and started out to see the country and hunt a little before breakfast while the men were cutting wood for the steamer4 ,we borrowed a rifle from one of the soldiers1 so that we had two rifles and a shot gun in the party4 ,we were warned1 as we went on shore1 of a lion that was lurking about in the bushes1 but we wanted nothing better than to see a lion4 ,we struck straight back into the country for some distance without seeing anything4 ,after a time ,i got after some guinea hens with the shot gun1 leaving the rest of the party with the rifles in the rear4 ,i was creeping carefully along to get within range when ,i suddenly came upon two large deer1 with horns over a yard long4 ,they were close to me1 and ,i ran a bullet into the shot gun1 but decided that it would be better to drive them toward the rifles than to try them with only a shot gun4 ,they stopped once and looked at me1 and then bounded away in the direction of the rest of the party4 ,doctor fired as they passed1 but the grass just there was tall1 and he missed4 ,we were about to follow them up1 and get them1 if possible1 without giving them our wind1 when our suspicious were aroused by something moving in the high grass and bushes4 ,we watched closely1 and soon made out a crowd of men with spears crouching down when we observed them1 and darting from bush to bush1 and circling around in such a way as to surround us4 ,they had horses1 and were easily identified as ,baggara ,arabs1 probably belonging to ,mohammed ,achmet's party4 ,we thought it best to retreat while we could do so in good order4 ,we reached the river1 and reported the state of affairs to the ,captain4 ,ibrahim and the ,mate also soon came in1 reporting that they were ,mohammed ,achmet's people1 that they were in great numbers1 and that they were still advancing1 and spreading out so as to surround us4 ,the ,captain gave the order to fire up at once1 and ordered the men on board as soon as possible4 ,the ,doctor and ,i started to reconnoiter1 but the ,captain would not allow it1 saying that we would find ourselves in an ambush1 and that it would do no good4 ,we did not want to be obliged to kill anybody to get away1 or to fight unless it became necessary1 so we obeyed him1 and went on board4 ,the ropes were cast off1 and we turned on 8full speed0 down stream4 ,we were glad enough to get safely away4 ,we passed a large island1 which is not properly named on the maps4 ,in fact1 there is not a single map or book upon the ,nile1 or any extended portion of the ,nile1 that is at all satisfactory4 ,one would suppose that ,gordon's map of the ,white ,nile would at least approximate to accuracy4 ,on the contrary1 it is full of the grossest and most amusing blunders4 99 99 99 ,our steersman is very ill with the fever to-day1 and just about used up4 ,we have been obliged to take to eating durra1 for our bread1 as well as most of our other provision1 has given out4 ,saw two large herds of buffaloes on the west bank4 ,one herd numbered over a hundred head1 young and old4 ,we had a good long look at them before they sniffed the air and tossed their heads and plunged off into the jungle4 ,in the evening1 ,turk and ,greek gathered around us1 and told us some marvelous stories of witches4 ,ibraham swallowed it all as the sober truth1 while we laughed at his credulity4 ,we stopped to spend the night and get wood on the east side1 just beyond or north of ,waldochone ,island4 ,there is said to be good hunting here1 and we are preparing to enjoy the sport while the men are getting the wood in the morning4 ,this is the only variety our life affords1 and helps to keep us in good spirits4 ,temperature3 #f1 #fa2 #aa1 #gg2 #e3ej1 #hc4 ,wednesday1 ,feb4 #aeth4--,we were up bright and early1 and started back into the country over a magnificent hunting ground4 ,we started up a hare1 and were after him1 when two large lions sprang out from behind a bush1 and ran across our path1 tails up1 making for the jungle4 ,they were immense fellows1 and the men who were with us were frightened and lagged behind1 while ,doctor and ,i chased them up and tried to head them off4 ,it was an exciting chase1 and made the blood tingle in our veins1 but the brush became so dense that they finally got away from us4 ,it was an experience in ,african life that we shall not soon forget4 99 99 99 ,about four o'clock we saw some #cjj ,arabs with their horses1 cattle and spears4 ,they were on their way1 so the ,captain and all on board said1 to join ,mohammed ,achmet4 ,certainly serious times are brewing4 ,what will the end be8 ,saw a number of ,dinkas on the east bank2 saw a dozen huge hippopotami sunning themselves4 ,ran aground1 but were soon off again4 ,it is a wonder we don't run down some hippopotami1 for they are very thick in the water about here4 ,arrived at ,khershawal at #f3cj ,p4,m4 ,the pilot was so intent on looking for sand-banks that he did not see the town and the people waiting on the shore1 till after we had passed it and them4 ,i was looking at the place through my glass1 and the engineer asked me if ,i did not see ,khershawal4 ,of course ,i did1 and we turned back1 while the whole crowd had a good laugh at the pilot4 ,here there is a garrison1 at present consisting of only #cj men4 ,the ,governor1 a fine looking man1 came on board4 ,he said the ,arabs we saw had passed here1 giving as an excuse that they were going hunting1 but that it was very well understood where they were going4 ,it is said that great numbers of the ,baggara ,arabs are constantly going over to ,mohammed ,achmet1 and that at present his forces number #aj1jjj men4 ,the ,greek merchant is afraid to go back to ,fashoda as he intended1 after selling his goods4 ,doctor has been threatened with another chill1 but happily it has been averted4 ,the nearest village of the ,dinkas1 who inhabit this side of the river1 is six hours distant4 ,the chief of the tribe lives there4 ,his assistant lives here in ,khershawal4 ,temperature1 #f3aj1 #fd2 #d1 #hg2 #i3dj1 #gd4 ,thursday1 ,feb4 #afth4--,went on shore1 and visited the town4 ,the soil is gravel1 sand and loam1 and the town stands up high and dry from the river4 ,the shore is covered with a beautiful white sand1 underneath which is a layer of excellent clay for bricks4 ,the town is built of straw huts1 and is surrounded with a zeriba4 ,we called at the ,governor's1 and were treated to sherbet and coffee4 ,we then walked about the town1 and ,i took a photograph of the ,assistant ,chief of the ,dinkas1 and one of a ,dinka woman1 and then took an inside view of the town and another general view from the outside of the zeriba4 ,this place must be comparatively healthy4 ,we were presented with a sheep by the ,governor as we were about to start4 ,we left at #i3de ,a4,m4 ,doctor and ,i were sitting on the bridge seeing what we could see1 when ,i discovered a huge snake in the water swimming slowly and trying to cross the river4 ,i rushed for the shot-gun1 and although we had almost got beyond range1 gave him both barrels with good effect4 ,i jumped into the small boat with a number of men2 the steamer put about and we went after that snake4 ,as we neared him1 however1 he began to show signs of life1 and ,doctor1 fearing he might get away1 fired two shots at him with the rifle from the bridge4 ,the second ball struck1 but glanced1 leaving not the slightest trace of a mark1 but stunned him so that he turned over on his back4 ,we picked him up and found that we had got hold of a boa-constrictor4 ,as soon as he was landed in the boat he came to again1 and made it lively for us4 ,his strength was something remarkable4 ,he ran his head a little way under a board1 and six men pulling with all their might and main could not get him out4 ,he came out when he got ready1 but then we had a rope around him1 and hauled him on deck4 ,there was a scattering of the crowd then4 ,we choked him to death1 cut his teeth out1 and put him away4 ,he came to life again1 and broke one of the supports of the water-jar4 ,then ,ibrahim stood on that snake's head till he was dead4 ,we hung him up4 ,he came to life again1 and nearly got away4 ,then we beat him on the head with a club till he was 8as dead as a door nail40 ,he came to life again6 ,no use6 ,we determined to conquer him this time1 and proceeded to skin him4 ,this was too much for him1 and he concluded to remain dead4 ,he measured #i ft4 #f in4 in length1 and #aa in4 around4 ,i have preserved the skin1 and hope to have it stuffed4 ,the sailors will eat rudder kept us awake nearly all night4 ,we went on shore not expecting to be gone long1 but the men said they had seen a lion1 and that started us off1 and we soon got on the trail4 ,doctor and ,i were separated in the thick brush4 ,he followed one trail and ,i another4 ,ibrahim was with me2 a good sailor with him4 ,i soon came upon three large deer4 ,i had only a shot gun1 but dropped a bullet in1 and was just raising the gun when ,ibrahim1 in what ,i call his woman's clothes1 came marching up1 and asked what ,i saw4 ,of course ,i saw no deer then4 ,it was a splendid hunting ground4 ,there were fresh tracks of lions and buffaloes and deer1 etc41 all around us4 ,but it was time to return to the steamer4 ,we had turned and gone only a little way1 when1 all of a sudden1 two mounted ,baggara ,arabs1 with their long spears leveled1 sprang from the bushes and stood in the pathway between us and the steamer4 ,the truth flashed upon us4 ,we were waylaid by followers of ,el ,mehdi1 who would not hesitate to kill us if they could4 ,ibrahim began to mutter his prayers and repeat passages from the ,koran4 ,the two men stood their horses before us1 directly in our pathway1 and eyed us from head to foot4 ,my gun was ready1 my finger on the trigger1 and they saw that the first step forward meant death to one if not both of them4 ,we walked steadily forward and towards them4 ,ibrahim was so frightened that ,i could hardly make him understand anything ,i said4 ,finally1 ,i spoke so sternly that he recovered his senses1 and kept close to my side1 as ,i ordered him to do4 ,as we approached the ,arabs they turned their horses and walked them ahead of us1 consulting what they had better do4 ,then they moved around us in a circle1 and followed us up in the rear4 ,finally1 they called to us1 and we turned and faced them4 ,they had evidently concluded that our guns were too many for them2 but they tried to get us to go back into the country1 telling us that our friends wanted to see us4 ,but we were not to be fooled so easily1 and kept steadily on till we reached the steamer4 ,we thought1 at first1 that possibly the ,doctor was in trouble1 and did want to see us1 but we found1 on his return1 that he had not seen them1 and knew nothing about them4 ,it was a ruse to get us into a trap4 ,all agreed that1 if we had not been armed as we were1 they would have killed us in a minute4 ,the ,doctor had had his adventures1 too4 ,he had seen three lions1 and wounded one and chased him nearly to ,gebel ,ain4 ,he had met a party of ,shillooks1 and found them friendly1 after marching up to them and shaking them by the hand4 ,this region is full of game of all sorts4 ,i killed some pigeons for dinner1 and then we all went on board4 ,we started at #aa3bj1 and reached the broad part of the river1 known as ,aboo ,zeid1 which ,gordon has put down on his map as a town1 at #c3cj4 ,we anchored near the island of ,abbas1 about two hours from the former village of ,mohammed ,achmet4 ,along here we saw hundreds of cords of ambatch in rafts4 ,but this spot did not please the ,captain2 so we turned and tied up finally at the upper end of the island of ,abbas1 near the town of ,gos ,aboo ,goumaah4 99 99 99 ,wednesday1 ,feb4 #bb;d4--,we tried to start this morning at #d ,a4,m41 but found that one of the boats in tow was aground4 ,this delayed us until #f o'clock1 when we were off4 ,the men were at work during the night cutting wood1 and we have a fair supply4 ,saw the encampment of a slave caravan on the west bank1 a little north of ,gebel ,owlee4 ,the suppression of the slave trade is a farce from beginning to end4 ,the first sight of ,khartoum was a welcome one4 ,it seemed almost like getting home4 ,how grand its mud houses looked too1 after the straw huts to which our eyes had become accustomed4 ,there is quite a fall in the ,white ,nile just above its confluence with the ,blue4 ,looking across the low island which divides the main stream of the ,white ,nile1 a narrow rushing river1 from the ,blue ,nile1 the latter appears about six feet lower4 ,we soon rounded the point of the island1 and were once again in the clear blue water of the branch river4 ,at #e3cj we tied up at ,khartoum4 ,the ,white ,nile voyage was safely ended4 ,as soon as we were fairly at land1 ,marcopoli ,bey came on board and greeted us4 ,and soon our ,syrian friends1 who were the last to see us off1 came to welcome us back4 ,we were among our friends again4 ,we now heard the news for the first time that ,raouf ,pasha had been deposed1 that there was a new order of government for the ,soudan1 and a new ministry1 and mixed up state of affairs in ,cairo1 with ,arabi 8,pasha0 at the top of the heap4 ,the only thing that can be predicted with any certainty is that there will be a general muss1 and probably an ,anglo-,french intervention4 ,in the ,soudan there can be no peace till ,mohammed ,achmet is taken4 ,giegler ,pasha is preparing an army1 such as it is1 of about #c1ejj men1 to march against him1 but the result is very doubtful4 ,it is reported that there is considerable fever in town4 ,one of our visitors had it upon him while he was calling on us1 and there is a lady at his house1 who it is feared is dying with it4 ,we sent ,ibrahim to see if our rooms were ready for us at the consul's4 ,he came back to say that they were1 and brought ,mougades1 the 8bookman10 with him4 ,he seemed rejoiced to see us again4 ,he was expecting to start by a merkeb for ,berber tomorrow1 but will wait now1 and go with us4 ,we marched up to the consul's in the evening1 and felt quite at home when we got back into our rooms4 ,a pile of letters was awaiting us1 and what a feast we had after hungering and thirsting so long for news from home4 ,our hearts are indeed full of thanksgiving to the kind ,providence who has watched over our dear ones1 and has brought us thus far on our way in safety4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,god ,,answers ,,persevering ,,prayer ,,rev4 ,w4 ,c4 ,,pond4 ,,china ,,for ,,christ6 ,it is now four years and more since ,i wrote 7for the ,,missionary of ,sept4 #ahgh71 an article under this title1 8,china for ,christ40 ,i said that this was the motto of our mission--inscribed1 indeed1 as the legend on our corporate seal--because one chief source of our enthusiasm in our mission work in ,california1 is that we hope by means of it to help dissipate the darkness of the great empire across the sea4 ,the object of that article was to invite our ,american ,missionary ,association to undertake a mission having its headquarters at ,hong ,kong1 but reaching out especially into those districts of the province of ,kwang ,tung1 from which our ,chinese came4 ,it would be extravagant to hope that that appeal might be fresh in the memory of many of the readers of our magazine4 ,but the matter of which it treats has never been absent for a day from the thoughts and prayers of the more earnest and advanced of our ,chinese brethren4 ,nothing has sufficed to discourage their prayers4 ,repeatedly we have been made to understand that the ,association could not undertake this work in addition to its other tasks1 but the brethren prayed on4 ,i thought that ,i had said all that ,i could say1 and done all that ,i could do1 to bring to pass what seemed to me so pressingly important1 and had become almost silent1 waiting1 ,i trust1 on the ,lord4 ,but the prayers and the faith of these brethren would not let me be still4 ,they seemed deaf to the negatives ,i brought them4 8,what are you going to do with this money80 ,i said to one of them1 referring to a sum of several hundred dollars which the ,congregational ,association of ,christian ,chinese has gathered and placed at interest4 8,we are keeping it till the ,hong ,kong mission is established10 was the prompt reply4 ,year after year they have counseled1 prayed and waited1 and1 it seems1 have waited not in vain4 ,through the influence of individuals belonging to the ,executive ,committee of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and with the cordial and joyful ,god-speed of the ,committee as a whole1 the ,american ,board has determined to listen to this appeal1 and--to use the apt expression of ,dr4 ,alden in his letter to me--8to accept this sacred trust40 ,our readers may be assured that no time was lost in sending the good news to the brethren4 ,at their assembly at our ,central ,mission ,house that evening there was glad thanksgiving1 and with it fresh and fervent prayer4 ,to receive what one has long been craving1 sometimes almost makes one tremble4 ,our mission1 as a 8sacred trust10 seems doubly sacred to me1 now4 ,its possibilities are magnified beyond computation1 and the mistakes into which we shall certainly fall1 unless we are guided by a wisdom better than our own1 look fraught with such loss1 such disaster1 that ,i shrink from the responsibility which ,i knew all along the answer to our prayers would certainly involve4 ,let all our friends pray for us with new faith and new ardor1 that from among the ,chinese in ,california a genuine ,salvation ,army may be gathered--,bible readers1 colporteurs1 pastors1 teachers1 evangelists--that1 under the direction of some wise and warm-hearted ,american missionary1 residing at ,hong ,kong1 may advance to the conquest of ,china for ,christ4 ,,the ,,closed ,,gates4 ,on the #dth day of this month of ,august1 the new law against ,chinese immigration went into effect4 ,the hardships and inconveniences it involves1 already--in some minor instances--begin to appear4 ,but the main effect has been to stimulate immigration to such an extent that the ,chinese population of our ,pacific slope is at least #cc per cent4 larger to-day that it was seven months ago4 ,the arrivals during the six months ending ,july #ca were #be1gcc2 the departures1 #c1fbg2 the gain1 #bb1ajf4 ,this increase will diffuse itself to some extent over the entire country--not all of it remaining on this side the continent--but almost all of it staying in ,america1 a permanent addition to our ,chinese element4 ,more and more will the privilege of returning be prized by those who go back to their native land for with a temporary stoppage of the immigration there will come a relative diminution of the supply1 and a consequent increase in the compensation of ,chinese labor4 ,let no one imagine then that the passage of this law is likely to bring to a speedy close our missionary opportunity4 ,thus far it has greatly increased our work1 and never before did we look over the rapidly approaching line between the old year and the new and see such hopeful indications as we see to-day4 ,let me give a few figures from the statistics for ,july2 ,new pupils1 #bcj2 total number enrolled1 #iga2 average attendance1 #dfg4 ,total number enrolled as pupils in our schools during eleven months of this fiscal year1 #b1cgc4 ,these numbers are greater by almost #ce per cent4 than those of the corresponding month of last year1 and those of that month were greater1 ,i believe1 than any ever before recorded4 ,the gain will not be so great in the future1 but it will not cease because for a time the immigration ceases4 ,nothing can stop it but a stoppage of supplies4 ,and of that--thank ,god that ,i may speak so confidently by faith in ,him and in his people--of that ,i have no fear4 ,illustration3 ,,missionary ,,class ,,in ,,china4 ,,an ,,interesting ,,scene4 ,the last communion season in ,bethany ,church occurred ,august #fth4 ,it was one of the few such
