fine of #djj4 ,the ,georgia ,railroad1 having been sued1 thought it best not to stand a trial1 and paid #gjj to a colored young woman who was put off its train because she was in a first-class car with a first-class ticket4 ,at ,nashville two or three suits have been entered in the same line4 ,bishop ,payne1 as is well known1 having been put off from a ,florida road1 is seeking legal redress4 ,bishop ,cain1 also of the ,african ,m4 ,e4 ,church1 having purchased a first-class ticket on the ,sunset route1 in ,texas1 was about to enter the car to which his ticket authorized him to go4 ,some white people who were also getting aboard said that they would not go if the black man should take a seat in that car4 ,he then entered the parlor car1 paying the extra dollar for his seat1 and now has sued the company for #bj1jjj4 ,it is a clear case that the law for common carriers requires the companies to allow passengers who have first-class tickets to ride in first-class cars4 ,the #adth amendment declares that 8no ,state shall deprive any person of life1 liberty or property1 without due process of law1 nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws40 ,justice ,strong1 of the ,supreme ,court1 referring to this language in the recent case of ,strander v4 ,virginia 7#aj ,otto1 #cjg71 which related to the exclusion of colored men from juries1 said3 8,what is this but declaring that the law in the ,state shall be the same for the black as for the white2 that all persons1 whether colored or white1 shall stand equal before the laws of the ,states1 and in regard to the colored race1 for whose protection the amendment was primarily designed1 that no discrimination shall be made against them by law because of their color40 ,it is clear that the railway companies are doing better and better in this matter4 ,some allow colored passengers to go without hindrance where their first-class tickets would take them4 ,other railway officials have instructed their train men that if colored people with first-class tickets make request to enter the first-class cars1 they shall be allowed so to do1 though the brakemen will keep them out as long as they can4 ,our colored friends must be patient while public sentiment is advancing and the law is coming to their help4 ,many colored people are as sensitive to the nicotine poison as any white #ca1 #ahhb4 ,there are four ways in which a race in the enjoyment of power and prosperity may deal with a race which is under the burden of weakness and temporary debasement2 ,god forbid that ,i should say with an inferior race2 for it is not ours to measure gifts until the scale of opportunity shall have been equalized2 ,god forbid that ,i should say with a despised race1 though that too nearly represents the fact among large portions of people1 even in our own land and day2--,i say1 in dealing with races which are for the present weaker and in inferior position to our own4 ,i used to read1 when ,i studied geography1 that the inhabitants of the world could be classed under four heads3 as barbarous1 half-civilized1 civilized and enlightened4 ,and ,i think the four methods in which this race may be treated correspond somewhat with these four divisions of human progress4 ,the first and barbarous cry which meets a weaker race is1 8kill them2 put them out of existence40 ,the first impulse of savage men--the question is when the savagery is all expelled from human nature--is to put out of the way that which is offensive1 that which is in your way1 that which seems in any way to compete with your full satisfaction and enjoyment4 ,the next way of dealing with those of a weaker race is to use them1 subordinate them to your own service1 make bondsmen of them1 let them be your hewers of wood and drawers of water1 command their labor and their persons1 control even their instruction and their religion1 and make them absolutely yours4 ,the third way in which a superior race may deal with a weaker race is by the gentler1 but perhaps no less harmful1 process of letting them alone1--withdraw from them1 hands off6 ,shut them out1 keep them away1 make the barrier between yourself and them impassable4 ,there is one way more in which a race higher in circumstance and condition and endowment may treat those who for the time are weaker than they1 and that is to lift them up to its own plane just so fast and just so far as ,god shall make it possible4 ,if we read in the ,old ,testament1 as many are increasingly disposed to do1 a progress of development which recognizes the training of mankind from its lowest possible basis up to its highest possible attainment1 we may find illustrations of these four methods of treatment in that record4 ,the first conviction of their duty1 and with ,divine consent1 toward the races which occupied ,canaan1 was to exterminate the people of the land4 ,at a little later stage1 when ,joshua had entered the country1 he made his league with the ,gibeonites and the people of the central confederacy1 by which they became his hewers of wood and drawers of water4 ,as we read on still further in the story1 we find the ,jews shutting themselves out from all mankind1 and shutting all men off from them1 having no dealings even with the ,samaritans4 ,but1 when the ,lord ,jesus ,christ came1 bringing the light of the gospel and the character of ,god and heavenly opportunities on to the soil of our earth1 his last command is1 8,share my gifts in every land with every creature10 and the last word he promises that some of us shall hear before we enter into the lasting joy of heaven1 is1 8,because ye have done it unto the least of these1 my brethren1 ye have done it unto me40 ,our country has illustrated all these methods of treatment of the weaker races4 ,its cry has been toward the ,indian--its characteristic cry almost from the very first--8,kill him2 there is no good ,indian but a dead ,indian20 and that sentiment1 that barbarism1 has not yet altogether been exterminated from the land4 ,our country has said of the great ,african race1 8,enslave them2 use them2 subordinate them to our own uses2 make them our hewers of wood and drawers of water1 our chattels1 our breeders of children2 use them without conscience2 subordinate them to our own supposed good40 ,and even now our land1 this land of freedom1 to which we all came strangers at some past time1 has issued its edict through its highest courts that the ,chinaman shall be shut out from all access to our civilization and our ,christianity4 ,brethren1 the glory and joy of this ,american ,missionary ,association is that its work has been from the beginning to reach out to those who were weakest1 who were most in need1 who were most neglected4 ,thank ,god that there is one place where the sentiment may be centred and emphasized that 8,god hath made of one blood all nations of men that dwell upon the face of the whole earth20 and though it may be true that for a time 8,he hath fixed the bounds of their habitation10 yet it is not so sure that these bounds were in his purpose fixed to outlast the breaking down of those barriers which the progress of ,christian civilization surely brings4 99 99 99 99 99 ,and now1 what is it that makes these races weaker1 less prosperous1 less independent than our own8 ,it is the lack of education2 it is the lack of developed intelligence1 not of native ability4 ,and what are the claims which ignorance may make upon intelligence8 ,it may not claim a right to power2 it may not claim a share in property2 it may not claim an equal social position with intelligence2 but it may claim an opportunity to fit itself for all these things4 ,suppose a man had been born and had lived his life at the bottom of a pit2 and he cries out1 as you listen to him at the brink1 8,give me a voice in the control of your affairs up there4 ,i am in the ,united ,states as truly as you are1 if ,i am at the bottom of this hole4 ,i want to vote and have a voice in the affairs of the nation40 ,you may properly suggest to him that until he has seen the lay of the land he can hardly decide which way the roads had better run1 that until he has lived in the upper air he can hardly know what institutions for the general control of society are best and wisest4 ,he cries out to you again from the bottom of the pit1 8,give me some money2 ,i have had no chance to earn any down here4 ,throw down some greenbacks40 ,and you remind him that greenbacks as a circulating medium from one pocket to another are not a particularly profitable investment1 and that if deposited in the clay bank1 in which his hole is dug1 they would yield him no great return4 ,he says to you1 8,at any rate1 throw down a broadcloth suit2 ,i want to dress as well as you40 ,you intimate again that even goodly raiment would not add greatly to his comfort in his present state4 ,but if that much-to-be-pitied man is wise1 he will cry out for one thing only3 8,reach me down a ladder1 by which ,i may climb up to where you are40 ,if he is wise1 the one thing he will ask of you is not a share in the control you have1 not a share in the possessions you have acquired1 not a share in the social position you may have attained1 but it is an opportunity to fit himself for the acquirement and use of all these things4 ,it is our business1 brethren and friends1 and it is the work of this ,association1 to reach that ladder down4 ,if you will but let our brother get his hands upon the lowest round1 he will come up and stand with us in ,god's sunshine1 as we have already seen him do4 ,if we forbear1 if we refuse1 we are more guilty than the priest and the ,pharisee who went by on the other side2 we are as guilty as were ,joseph's brethren who lowered their brother into the pit and left him there and went their way4 ,we are not here to-day to plead rival claims and rival causes2 but amid the whole circle of ,christian graces and ,christian charities1 the last in all the world to leave unfilled is that which1 when all the other miracles and glorious works of ,christ had been catalogued1 was added as the crowning gem of all--8,the poor have the gospel preached unto them40 ,god help us ever to have sympathy with this grand work2 and in this era which is coming1 an era which will call for greater sacrifices and greater gifts than any that have gone before--for it must be an era of endowment for these institutions--let its claims be heard among all the rest in fair and true proportion4 ,,misplaced ,,benevolence4 8,the sympathies of ,christian people are always deeply stirred when they come into personal contact with individuals who1 in foreign lands1 have come out of the superstitions and darkness in which they were reared and are seeking help for themselves or their people in this country4 ,the touching stories that can be truthfully told of struggles in the past1 and of difficulties under which they now labor1 appeal strongly to all who hear them1 and it is quite natural that gifts should be made in response to these pleas with little thought of certain nearly inevitable results which1 were they aware of them1 the donors would deeply deplore4 ,the matter is a delicate one to treat4 ,on the one hand1 we would have earnest sympathy expressed for those who are seeking to elevate themselves and their people1 whether educationally or religiously1 and would have them wisely aided4 ,it seems ungracious to do or say anything to check the outpouring of money in response to these appeals4 ,but1 on the other hand1 when we see how1 by reason of the reception given to these special appeals1 the work of our missionaries is hindered1 and their plans for the education and elevation of the people to whom they are sent are imperiled1 we are constrained to utter again a word of caution40 ,the above is quoted from a thoughtful article in the ,august number of denominationalism among the colored people has been1 and still is1 intense4 ,as the ,baptist and ,methodist ,church once covered this entire ,southern field1 the ,congregationalist is looked upon as a traitor to a holy cause1 who has enlisted under a strange and piratical banner4 8,who are you1 anyhow80 8,where do you come from80 8,what strange faith have you picked up now80 are questions which salute our brethren constantly1 and which are designed to cover them with confusion and discomfiture4 ,but this battle has been bravely and patiently fought1 and the right to exist 8established40 ,there were #ca pastors and delegates present4 ,the reports from the various fields were cheering and hopeful4 ,it has not been a harvest year1 though some churches have been refreshed by the gracious colored people suffer1 the churches suffer in their resources4 ,let me summarize the result of our annual meeting4 ,i4 ,from the reports of the churches we find that there have been numerical losses1 which1 though seemingly serious1 are really gains1 so far as the purity and vigorous life of the ,association is concerned4 ,the ,association has not yet laid down the pruning knife1 and it may be that more dead branches will be clipped off in the year1 without which the tree will be more beautiful and fruitful4 ,,ii4 ,a higher stand was taken for an educated ministry4 ,one of the brethren1 on his own volition1 presented a resolution to this effect3 8,that from this day we1 as an ,association1 will neither license nor ordain any man to preach in our churches who is not fitted by education to perform all the sacred duties of his office40 ,the brethren in the discussion preceding the vote said that while there was formerly an excuse for an ignorant ministry1 we now have our colleges and theological seminaries1 and with a little self-denial1 all who wish may fit themselves to guide intelligently the minds and hearts of the people4 ,,iii4 ,the necessity was deeply felt and freely expressed1 of taking a clearer and stronger denominational position1 with all charity and fellowship for all who love our ,lord ,jesus ,christ in sincerity4 ,we1 as ,congregationalists1 should know the ground on which we stand1 and be able to give a reason for the hope within us4 ,it was voted that a ,manual be prepared1 answering more fully than any yet issued1 the local needs of our ,louisiana of the ,,missionary would be interested to know something of the ,institute held at ,le,moyne for the colored teachers of ,shelby and the adjoining counties4 ,the ,institute was continued for two weeks1 beginning on the first ,monday in ,june4 ,prof4 ,steele was appointed conductor by the ,state ,superintendent4 ,teachers were present not only from western ,tennessee1 but also from ,mississippi and ,arkansas4 ,on the first day our enrolment list reached eighty-nine1 and increased during the succeeding days to one hundred and fifteen4 ,our daily session began at quarter before nine with short devotional exercises4 ,these were followed by the recitations in the different branches4 ,the lessons were given and studied by topics1 and each teacher was provided with a blank book1 in which he kept the topics for study and also any notes which he wished to remember4 ,the ,rev4 ,mr4 ,imes had charge of reading1 ,prof4 ,steele of arithmetic1 grammar1 penmanship and geology1 while ,i took history and geography4 ,a certain time each day was devoted to any matters of interest which we should wish to present4 ,at this time several talks on school organization were given1 an object lesson on coal was presented by ,miss ,lovell1 principal of one of the public schools1 the temperance charts showing the effects of alcohol upon the stomach were exhibited1 and ,miss ,wadsworth1 a worker under the ,w4 ,c4 ,t4 ,u41 addressed the teachers1 answering many questions which they asked her4 ,the teachers present were1 without exception1 earnest1 enthusiastic and anxious to get good1 that they might do good4 ,one young man said to me at the close of the ,institute3 8,this ,institute has given me work to do for twelve months to come2 it was just what ,i needed40 ,many others told us of the good they had received during the ,institute1 and seemed to feel that they should do their work in their school-rooms better for the work they had done there4 ,the county superintendent1 who was with us for two days1 told us that the colored teachers would average quite as high as the white teachers1 who were then in attendance at a similar ,institute at ,bartlett1 the county seat4 ,this is about the first work of the kind that has ever been done in ,tennessee1 but if the results are as good as we have every reason to hope1 we are sure it will not be the last4 99 99 99 99 99 though miscellaneous throng1 whose intelligent looks and interested1 orderly demeanor were a surprise to some of the newest workers and evidence of progress to all4 ,the regular exercises of the ,sunday-school were first attended to4 ,the lesson1 8,following ,christ10 with its golden text1 8,whosoever will come after ,me1 let him deny himself1 and take up his cross and follow ,me10 seemed to furnish a peculiarly appropriate theme for the last conference of the teachers with their classes1 and called forth thoughts and experiences1 exhortations and warnings1 calculated to be helpful alike to the ,christian of years1 the score or more of young converts1 and the few who1 with all their calls and opportunities1 still refuse the yoke of ,christian service4 ,in closing the review the superintendent gave a blackboard exercise suggested by the verses1 8,what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul8 ,or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul80 ,this formed an impressive introduction to the first subject brought forward--the use of the ,blackboard4 ,other topics presented were1 ,opening and closing exercises1 ,duties of the superintendent1 ,use and abuse of lesson helps1 ,how to get the children in1 ,conversion and training of pupils1 ,individual responsibility4 ,two of these topics were well presented by former graduates of this institution4 ,the only topic which evoked general discussion was that of success in gathering the children in and winning them to continued attendance4 ,of the many who volunteered a statement of methods to this end1 all spoke briefly1 pointedly1 correctly and sensibly1 and the question-box when opened revealed nothing but practical1 intelligent queries4 ,the ,institute closed with the repetition by ,miss ,koons of one of our regular ,sabbath-afternoon course of lectures1 a lecture on ,temperance1 illustrated by ,sewall's charts4 ,a quantity of temperance literature was night1 in his broken ,english1 he told us of the impression made on him by the ,sunday-school lesson of the day--the demoniac made happy and sent home to tell what great things the ,lord had done for him4 ,said ,philip3 8,it is ,god who put me here1 where ,i have learned of ,christ1 and now you must pray for me that ,i may be a good ,christian and grow strong and wise1 for ,i must sometime go home to my friends in ,africa and tell them how the ,lord had compassion on me40 ,his artless words touched all hearts and turned our prayer meeting into an impromptu missionary concert4 ,one young man said3 8,philip's friends are our friends4 ,though there is much for us to do here our #bej years of trial in ,america may have been only a discipline to fit us for our greater work in ,africa40 seen vividly as we compare the results of the present year with those of four years ago4 ,then we had no church edifice2 begun a day-school with three scholars in an old shell of a building for a school-house2 the ,sabbath-school had about ten scholars4 ,now we number nearly forty4 ,since that time a beautiful chapel has been built and a snug parsonage1 and we now have an enrolment of seventy scholars in the day-school4 ,some of our pupils have passed a very satisfactory examination before the ,board of ,examiners1 and received certificates to teach in the public schools this summer4 ,our work has grown this year more than ever in the favor and confidence of both white and black4 ,i believe that the good effect of the closing exercises will make the school very large next fall4 ,one pleasing fact in connection with the exercises was the young organist we presented to the public4 ,ours is the only colored church here that has an organ1 and my wife is the only colored woman1 so far as ,i know1 in the county1 who plays the organ4 ,now that she has taken one of the girls and taught her how to play1 one of the colored churches has ordered an organita for its ,sabbath-school4 ,another fact of interest is that the county ,superintendent of ,education has consented to give to our school a portion of the public money1 so that we may teach it as a public school4 ,the interest of the church and school has been very much increased by a fine bell1 given by ,mr4 ,f4 ,w4 ,carpenter1 of the ,central ,church1 ,providence1 ,r4,i41 also a beautiful communion service1 presented by the ladies of the same church4 ,we have received a barrel from the ladies of the church at ,yarmouth1 ,mass4 ,many of the pieces will go to assist a poor girl who intends entering ,fisk ,university next fall4 ,we have received a box from ,rev4 ,c4 ,l4 ,woodworth1 which enabled us to help worthy ones in the ,sabbath-school4 ,my wife has planted a flower garden in front of the parsonage4 ,i have planted a vegetable garden1 which has given me an opportunity for physical exercise4 ,we have every variety of vegetables1 and as fine as ,i ever saw anywhere4 ,my white potatoes are particularly perhaps half as many boys1 over at the ,s4 ,s4 ,convention ,park4 ,they had stood behind me on the platform ,sunday morning and backed me up with their inimitable melodious songs of ,zion4 ,the large multitude of people--perhaps a thousand--were touched by their enthusiasm1 where a little of art has not robbed nature of her best effects4 ,so here again ,i find the same bright1 happy faces and more of them4 ,many of the regular school exercises were set aside for my address4 ,they sang 8,hold the ,fort10 and others of ,sankey's collection1 with spirit4 ,the young lady who teaches them1 ,miss ,gerrish1 is remarkably faithful1 full of tact and good sense4 ,your missionary himself interested me a good deal4 ,i saw him first at the young men's rooms at a prayer meeting4 ,he gave a little personal experience1 showing how a child comes to the ,master's arms4 ,professor ,stearns1 of ,washburn ,college1 spoke highly of his disinterested work at the mission4 ,he has worked great changes baptized in ,english1 when followed the ,communion services in ,english4 ,at this there were twelve white members of the ,congregational church here1 and one ,indian2 also two white members of the ,protestant ,methodist church1 one ,cumberland ,presbyterian1 and one other ,congregationalist2 there were also about seventy-five ,indians as spectators4 ,the ,sabbath ,school was held soon after1 seventy-five being present4 ,first1 there were four songs in the ,chinook language1 accompanied by the organ and violin2 then three in ,english4 ,the prayer was in ,nisqually1 and the lesson read in ,english1 after which the lessons were recited4 ,three classes of ,indian boys1 two of ,indian girls1 and two of white children were instructed in ,english2 one class of ,indian children was talked to partly in ,english and partly in ,chinook4 ,there is one ,bible class of ,indian men who can understand ,english1 a part of whom can read and a part cannot1 and another of about forty ,indians1 whose teacher talks ,english1 but an interpreter translates it into ,nisqually1 and then he does not reach some ,indians of the ,clallam tribe who are present4 ,next followed a meeting of the ,temperance ,society1 as six persons wished to join--a white man who can write his name and five ,indians who touch the pen while the ,secretary makes the mark4 ,three of these are sworn in ,english and two in ,chinook4 ,the whole services are interspersed with singing in ,english and ,chinook4 ,illustration3 ,,indians ,,speaking ,,across ,a ,,chasm4 ,on the trip to an ,indian logging camp one evening1 to hold a meeting1 my companion and myself found the tide up so high that we had to 8coon0 the logs1 as they were rolling in the water1 in the dark1 wade a part of the time1 and improvise a lantern out of cedar sticks split up rather fine4 ,a ,sabbath day's work appears as follows3 ,began services with the ,indians at ,jamestown about ten o'clock1 which continued until half-past twelve2 then returned three-quarters of a mile to my boarding-place1 went into the cupboard and took a very little lunch in my hands2 walked four miles or more to ,dunginess1 where ,i preached to the whites at two o'clock1 without even a chair or anything to sit down on2 walked back two miles to the house of a friend1 where ,i sang and played on the organ about all of the time1 except while eating supper1 until half-past six or seven1 when ,i walked back to ,jamestown and held services from eight to ten o'clock--thus walking thirteen miles1 besides holding service over five hours1 and singing an hour or two4
