we come continually in contact4 ,education is not merely that from books1 but that also which is received from all manner of surrounding influences1 as they exist in the home1 in social intercourse and in the community at large4 ,we see whole nations continue1 century after century1 on the same low level of barbarism1 because no change occurs in their outward circumstances to bring new forces to act upon them4 ,our ,indian tribes are an illustration4 ,they live1 out on the western plains1 precisely as their fathers did for ages before them2 and thus they will live so long as the modifying influence of civilization does not reach them1 and bring a change of environment4 ,let such a change occur1 however1 and a revolution takes place1 whatever race may be involved4 ,even the most favored nations improve rapidly1 when any external fact comes in1 to change circumstances1 and thus to alter the current of thought and the channel of action4 ,think how much of modern civilization is owing to three things1 themselves external and mechanical1 yet powerfully affecting mind by their incidental effects--the invention of gunpowder1 of the mariner's compass and of printing4 ,but if1 in addition to new inventions and industries1 there be brought in schools and churches1 to operate directly on mind and heart1 the effect is like placing people in a new climate4 ,it is1 indeed1 scarcely a figure of speech1 when we sometimes speak of an intellectual and moral atmosphere--meaning thereby the totality of constant influences in a community1 which affect opinion1 modify character and control conduct4 ,as we breathe the air1 every moment of every day1 thinking little of the fact1 yet continually drawing in health or sickness1 life or death1 so are we unconsciously but most really influenced for good or evil by all that is going on around us2 by public opinion1 social customs1 example of friends and neighbors1 existing institutions1 industries1 amusements1 studies1 reading1 conversation and religious exercises4 ,it is a slow process to raise an entire population or a numerous class of people2 but much may be done rapidly1 if we select some of the young of both sexes and change their environment1 and so prepare them to introduce the leaven of improvement into the mass4 ,thus1 allow colored children to grow up in communities of prevailing ignorance1 superstition and immorality1 where they live in miserable hovels1 see only examples of coarseness and rudeness and hear only a negro dialect1 and they will naturally be like their parents and the neighbors4 ,nor will it be sufficient merely to put spelling-books and readers into their hands4 ,their surroundings are still depressing and degrading4 ,but send some of these youth away to such institutions of education as the ,atlanta1 ,fisk and ,howard ,universities--in other words1 make a total change of environment--and the effect is marvelous4 ,in addition to having access to books1 they go where the entire conception and standard of living is different and elevated2 where religion is intelligent2 where morals are pure2 where manners are refined2 where language is grammatical2 where clothing is whole and neat2 where public sentiment is on the right side of disputed questions4 ,it is1 indeed1 breathing a new atmosphere1 where every breath is health and life4 ,i have watched1 with great interest and satisfaction1 the effect of these incidental influences1 during my five years' connection with ,howard ,university4 ,the revolution which will occur in a rough specimen of humanity from the interior plantation districts--dull of countenance1 and rude in manners and in dress--would scarcely be credited4 ,he finds himself in a new world on reaching ,washington1 and mingling with older students and the city population4 ,new ideas of dress1 speech and behavior come to him daily4 ,chapel exercises1 prayer-meetings and the preaching on the ,sabbath raise his religious conceptions4 ,the novel sights along the streets stimulate as well as interest4 ,the competition of fellow-students arouses ambition4 ,he hears numerous celebrated public speakers1 and1 on ,saturdays1 goes to the ,capitol1 and listens to ,congressional debates1 sees eminent men1 visits the ,patent-,office1 the ,smithsonian1 the ,national ,museum and the ,navy-,yard1 gets an idea of our government and of politics1 and thus is hourly absorbing valuable knowledge at every pore4 ,three or four years of such an environment make a very different man of him2 and all his new ideas he carries back to his home1 and thus becomes a power for good in the community4 ,why will not ,christian people appreciate these facts and amply sustain the ,american ,missionary ,association in its noble work of planting and strengthening the educational institutions which operate to change for the better the environment of the colored race in this country8 ,all improvement must be by an influence from without1 which shall quicken and inspire1 which shall teach and guide2 and there is no such influence comparable with that which comes from the combination of schools and churches4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,temperance ,,text-,,books ,,in ,,our ,,schools4 ,our institutions have always been temperance societies4 ,mr4 ,john ,m4 ,stearns1 ,sec4 of the ,nat4 ,temp4 ,soc41 at its recent annual meeting1 reporting his tour through the ,south1 said that1 as he was talking to the students at ,fisk ,university1 ,prof4 ,spence reported that every student was required to sign the total abstinence pledge or to leave the institution4 ,at ,atlanta ,university1 he found that all of the #caj students had signed the same pledge2 and this is also true of all our other schools4 ,then our students1 as they go everywhere in their vacations1 become temperance propagandists1 organizing societies1 circulating the literature of the reform and securing signatures to the pledge4 ,but1 during the past year1 our ,executive ,committee have thought to take a step forward1 and so have voted to require the use of some temperance text-book in all our schools4 ,mr4 ,stearns found them introduced into many1 and by another year they will be found in all4 ,the ,atlanta ,university has already had ,dr4 ,richardson's ,temperance ,lesson ,book in use for two or three years1 to the highest satisfaction of all concerned4 ,the examination of the class in this book in the presence of the ,state ,board of ,examiners was pronounced by a visitor the best temperance lecture he had ever heard4 ,let such text-books go into all the schools of the ,south1 and ,the appearance and conduct of this commencement audience in successive years affords a good indication of the steadily improving condition of the mass of the people1 viewed with great satisfaction by friends who have opportunities for comparison4 ,a class of twelve was graduated1 ten young women from the ,normal course and two young men from the ,college course1 all of whom presented pieces which received much commendation for their simplicity1 directness and good sense4 ,the annual address was delivered by ,rev4 ,e4 ,w4 ,bacon1 of ,new ,london1 ,conn41 and was a forcible and eloquent plea for self-education1 which was singularly appropriate to the circumstances of the young people just leaving school1 to whom it was primarily addressed4 ,two members of the class which was graduated1 had1 during the year1 been called away from earth1 as well as five from other classes1 being an unusual number of deaths in one year4 ,a precious work of grace was enjoyed during the year1 and more than thirty professed conversion1 of whom fifteen united with the school church4 ,all the members of the graduating class were professing ,christians1 which may also be said of nearly every class which has been graduated hitherto4 ,as an evidence of the increasing favor with which this school and its work is regarded in the community1 there may be appropriately quoted some of the remarks of ,rev4 ,c4 ,a4 ,evans1 of the ,m4 ,e4 ,church ,south1 pastor of a large church in the city1 formerly ,general in the ,southern army1 who spoke at the close of the class examinations3 8,i did not expect to say a word1 but ,i comply with an ,american habit of making a speech whenever called upon4 ,i am a ,georgia man1 and my children are all ,georgia born1 and ,i wish them all to stay here4 ,it is a kindred wish that every one of you may remain a citizen of ,georgia4 ,i also wish that the friends who have come from afar to be your instructors shall not take to themselves wings and fly away1 but shall settle in this grand old ,state1 and their children after them4 ,there is no enmity between the white and colored people in this ,state4 ,there is a growing desire of the white people1 as you will find1 for your welfare4 ,they are anxious that you should have the best in social life1 the best in intellectual life1 and in moral life1 to which you can attain4 ,the ,state is benefited by good citizens1 and ,god is glorified by true manhood4 ,i have looked upon these exercises with great interest as a fellow citizen1 expecting to live with you and to come into contact with you in a thousand ,,examiners4 ,we do not believe that we have ever seen better teaching than we find done at the ,atlanta ,university4 ,evidences of the same thoroughness appeared in all grades of the grammar school and throughout all the classes of the higher departments4 ,we were particularly struck with one feature in the method of instruction adopted in this institution1 and that was the accuracy of the to previous standards1 students were ready to receive their diplomas both in theology and normal studies1 they voluntarily chose to spend another year in further preparation for life's work4 ,the showed a grasp of thought1 a clearness and vigor in presentation certainly far from discreditable to any public rostrum4 ,we were proud of them4 ,a little further mental discipline in mathematics and the classics and they will be well prepared leaders of their people4 ,at these various exercises more than the usual number of visitors were present4 ,during some of the examinations in the chapel the audience largely colored1 the addresses were listened to with breathless attention1 except at intervals marked by hearty1 though decorous1 applause4 ,a noted feature of the exercises was the good elocution of the students1 resulting mainly from the brief training received at the ,institute4 ,to one accustomed to the old time thick and indistinct plantation pronunciation1 the change seemed indeed wonderful4 ,those who had seen the students at the beginning and at the end of the term remarked a striking improvement in their personal appearance4 ,intellectual1 moral and spiritual culture dear readers1 ,i know it is a matter of rejoicing that in all our land there is not a youth who may not hopefully look up and forward to the enjoyment of these things4 ,i should not have taken so much blessed us in the conversion of not less than thirty of our pupils4 ,in all our successes1 as in all our discouragements1 the good hand of our ,god has been upon us1 and we rejoice in it all that we next year4 ,on ,saturday1 the #bgth1 was the closing exhibition of the ,sewing ,class1 under charge of ,mrs4 ,lathrop4 ,seventy-six girls this year have been in the class1 meeting on ,saturday forenoons4 ,friends in the ,north have helped by contributing patchwork1 basted garments1 etc41 and the girls have been taught plain sewing with the making of mottoes1 bookmarks1 etc4 ,only sixteen sessions were held1 but the amount of work accomplished was surprising4 ,there were displayed in the main school room eighteen patchwork quilts and one hundred and twenty-one finished garments1 dresses1 aprons1 underclothing1 etc41 all neatly made1 and showing decided improvement in sewing4 ,there were some short readings1 recitations and singing1 and then a few brief talks from ,prof4 ,hodge and others1 and afterward the garments were distributed to those who made them1 amid thankful hilarity4 ,on ,monday and ,tuesday1 #bith and #cjth1 were held the closing examinations4 ,these were more rigid and thorough than for a long time before1 but the classes generally did well1 and acquitted themselves with much credit4 ,during the year there have been held monthly examinations1 and the classes have been more thoroughly graded than ever1 so that there will be less confusion than usual in opening the next school year4 ,quite a number of visitors were in attendance1 both white and colored4 ,rev4 ,b4 ,f4 ,breedlove1 pastor of the largest ,southern ,methodist ,church in the city1 was present a part of the time1 and publicly expressed his gratification and commendation of the work done4 ,on ,wednesday1 the #cast1 occurred the closing exercises1 beginning at #i ,a4,m4 ,the school went through with their essays1 declamations1 dialogues and songs in a way that reflected credit upon them and their teachers4 ,the church was well filled with spectators of all colors4 ,three students received certificates of graduation from the ,high-,school course1 and these will probably go to ,atlanta ,university or elsewhere in the fall4 ,after the programme was finished1 some of the visitors were called on for speeches4 ,hon4 ,felix ,corput1 ,mayor of the city1 responded in few but colored ,presbyterian clergyman from ,baltimore1 a man of fine education and ability1 made an excellent address4 ,he spoke very highly of the great educational work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 in whose service he has himself labored1 as a missionary in ,africa1 and also in this country4 ,mr4 ,j4 ,j4 ,clay1 a prominent white citizen1 spoke with much apparent sympathy and earnestness1 commending education and the work of our school4 ,there were several other short speeches from former students or patrons of the school1 all showing deep interest in its work4 ,on ,wednesday night came the grand finale in the shape of a closing concert1 conducted by our music teacher1 ,miss ,jennie ,woodworth4 ,although the night was very rainy and stormy1 the church was full1 with quite a number of white people1 who expressed their great gratification4 ,the singing was good1 and the concert well carried out to the end1 showing decided musical ability on the part of all in solo1 duet and chorus singing4 ,mr4 ,derry1 a friendly white citizen1 made an impromptu and voluntary address1 full of real sympathy and kind words4 ,the daily paper printed a flattering report of the concert1 and of the whole work of the school4 ,public sentiment in this respect is becoming more and more friendly4 ,we are glad to report that both school and church have prospered during the year4 ,the total enrollment of students is #aii1 and we rejoice to know that additional school rooms1 so greatly needed1 are to be provided before another year begins4 ,fifteen or twenty of the scholars were converted during the precious revival in ,march last4 ,quite a number will engage in teaching during the summer1 and several will go to higher institutions of learning in the fall4 99 99 99 99 99 8,,pine ,,grove ,,college10 ,,kentucky4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,b4 ,h4 ,,fairchild1 ,d4,d4 ,in ,jackson ,county1 sixteen miles from ,berea1 there has long been a church called ,walnut ,chapel1 similar in character to the church at ,berea1 and connected with the same association4 ,a few families1 slightly colored1 have always lived among them1 belonged to the same church and attended the same school4 ,indeed1 their minister1 the most prosperous man among them1 and long a trustee of the public school1 was said to be slightly colored4 ,another minister1 who preached to them a few years1 exhibited more signs of color4 ,in this neighborhood lives ,robert ,jones1 who1 in #ahef1 was whipped by a mob1 thirty-three lashes on his bare back1 for being a colporteur of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and for sustaining ,mr4 ,fee in one of his meetings4 ,four of the old man's sons live about him2 one is a preacher1 as is the father himself4 ,when the colored school law was passed in this ,state1 their harmony was disturbed4 ,it is made unlawful 8for any colored child to attend a common school provided for white children or for a white child to attend a common school provided for colored children40 ,this utterly deprived the colored children of school privileges1 for there were not enough of them to organize a school district1 and there was no prospect that there ever would be4 ,in this emergency the church asked advice of the ,association4 ,after due deliberation they were advised to build a good school-house that should be open to all children of the neighborhood1 and let the common school take care of itself4 ,aid was promised them1 if it should be necessary4 ,the community accepted this advice4 ,a plan of a school-house was furnished them1 and a promise made that if they would build according to that plan1 they should have a good teacher the first six months without expense to them4 ,the school-house was to be #becj1 #ab ft4 from floor to ceiling1 with four large windows1 two doors1 and good seats and desks for #fj scholars4 ,this was a great undertaking1 unheard of in that region4 ,there was no house equal to it in the county1 for schools or meetings4 ,but enthusiasm was developed1 as the work went on1 and culminated at the dedication on the #bfth of ,june4 ,three times as many were present as could be crowded into the house1 and so great was the rush for the school it was necessary to publish that only sixty could be admitted4 ,the children of those who aided in building the house were to be admitted first1 but must make application within three days4 ,at the end of the three days nearly a hundred applications had been received4 ,before the dedication the people had1 in some way1 named the school 8,the ,pine ,grove ,college40 ,they were advised to drop the name college1 as their most advanced students would never get within two years of college4 ,but names are not easily dropped1 and this seems destined to endure4 ,miss ,maria ,muzzy1 an experienced teacher1 one of ,berea's corps1 had been engaged to take the school4 ,very frequently she was warned by good friends who knew the mountain people and ,kentucky habits that there would be no safety for her in that school1 she would surely be mobbed1 no lady should be asked so to expose herself1 she should not think of staying a night without a pistol4 ,she almost feared that it was a rash undertaking4 ,but calmer counsels1 with trust in ,god1 sustained her4 ,no indignity was ever offered her1 and no one ever had more friends among such a people4 ,at the close of the first week she wrote to ,berea that she hadn't the heart to turn away so many1 and asked for an assistant1 who should exchange with her in teaching in the woods4 ,this arrangement was made2 and for two months a part of the school was in the house and a part in the grove4 ,the assistant was ,miss ,kate ,gilbert1 another of ,berea's corps of teachers4 ,illustration3 ,,familiar ,,scene ,,in ,,louisville1 ,,ky4 ,she offered to forego her summer vacation1 and teach in the woods1 with no promise of compensation4 ,not the least difficulty was to find a boarding place for the teacher4 ,a lady who was to teach eighteen months in succession without a vacation must be taken care of4 ,not a room could be found in the neighborhood1 with a window in it1 which she could have to herself4 ,a man was found who needed a new house1 and for an advance of #ajj1 for a part of two years' board1 built a log house near the school-house and furnished her a room fifteen feet square1 with two windows1 and a lock to her door4 ,there is no other such room in all the region4 ,the school closed grandly and beautifully1 with an examination and an exhibition4 ,but the common school was abandoned for not a pupil could
