living and doing richly4 ,straitened circumstances are quite likely to increase with growing accumulations of wealth2 and unsatisfied cravings for riches are exaggerated by every effort at their satisfying4 8,there is0--indeed there is--8that withholdeth more than is meet1 but it tendeth to poverty40 ,and the pinch of poverty itself can never nip so sharply as the pinch of withholding avarice4 ,our mental faculties gain through their using4 ,giving out thought in speech or writing increases one's treasures of thought1 as well as one's ease and power of expression4 ,in our moral ,the shoe shops1 the printing establishment1 the tailoring and knitting department have gained a new impulse1 now that they have gotten into their large new rooms4 ,the saw mill1 the harness-making shop1 the tin1 carpenter and wheelwright shops were all in full blast4 ,after a pleasant lunch in the 8,stone building10 the procession1 headed by the trustees and re-inforced by a large party from ,norfolk1 made its way toward ,virginia ,hall1 where the graduating exercises were to be held4 ,in a few moments the large hall was crowded4 ,a few words from ,gen4 ,armstrong explained the change in the graduating exercises inaugurated the previous year1 by which the speakers of the day were for the most part members of classes that had graduated in previous years1 and had come back to tell of described the condition of affairs among the colored people in one of the western towns of ,virginia4 8,to the ,girls0 gave the graduating class and the audience the wisdom which had come from a year's experience in the world4 ,thos4 ,wildcatt ,alford1 a young ,indian chief1 made a strong plea for the education of his people4 ,he said that one educated ,indian could do more for the benefit of his people in one year than a regiment of soldiers in ten years4 ,he spoke hopefully and bravely of the future of his race1 and of what he meant to do for it4 ,he is one of the three ,indians who graduated with the present class1 the first who have finished the regular ,english course of the school4 8,our ,race10 by one of the early graduates of the school1 told of the discouraged feeling ,,principal4 ,the work at ,beach ,institute is taking on more definite shape4 ,this year a class has graduated1 and the course of study for the remaining grades has been brought into something like symmetry4 ,the ,savannah public schools graduate the colored pupils from the grammar grade1 above which no provision is made for their education4 ,for the white pupils1 however1 a ,high ,school is maintained4 ,hence the ambitious colored youth1 many of whom are as fair as their white neighbors1 turn hopefully to the 8,beach0 as a school which will give them what the city fathers have denied them4 ,the first of the public exercises which have just closed the academic year was a public examination1 held ,friday1 ,may #bf4 ,the programme was the regular daily programme1 so far as the order of classes was concerned1 but the questions put were given at random and without previous preparation from the work of the entire year4 ,by this plan1 of course1 a few failures occurred1 but the visitors felt that they had seen the classes fairly tested1 and their hearty commendation was duly appreciated4 ,the second public exercise was a sermon preached in the ,congregational ,church to the rendered in a most satisfactory manner and listened to by a crowded house4 ,the tables1 the organ and the lamps were most tastefully trimmed with a profusion of flowers1 the gifts of the pupils4 ,jessamines mingled their fragrance with that of the late-blooming rosebuds4 ,pond lilies and ,spanish moss were enlivened by the sthetic sunflower4 ,upon the platform1 during a part of the exercises1 were the ,hon4 ,j4 ,o4 ,ferrill and ,mr4 ,murray4 ,the former is a member of the ,city ,board of ,education and a firm friend of the colored people4 ,he has frequently advocated in the ,board1 but with only partial success1 more extended facilities for their education in the public schools1 and better salaries for the colored teachers4 ,mr4 ,murray is a representative of the ,savannah ,daily ,recorder4 ,in the audience were numerous colored men of influence1 who happened to be in the city attending the ,baptist ,missionary ,convention4 ,the music was furnished entirely by the pupils1 and included songs1 quartets1 duets1 solos and two instrumental pieces4 ,the exercises were closed by the graduation of a class of two girls4 ,the diplomas were presented by the principal4 ,then the pupils rose at the touch of the organ1 and striking up a march1 8,the ,christian ,soldier10 sang their way to their various school-rooms1 and the year's work was ended4 ,illustration3 ,,peeping disciples from ,jerusalem advanced the ,kingdom1 so our dispersion to two different sections of the city1 it is believed1 has accomplished the hope of our night4 ,no colored man has co-operated with us more efficiently than ,rev4 ,a4 ,f4 ,owens1 pastor of the ,third ,baptist ,church4 ,he and his people1 after our fire1 offered us the use of their house for school purposes4 ,no mention of pay was permitted beyond that involved in some repairs necessary to adapt it to our purposes4 ,the marks at the written examinations fell below those of last year1 as might have been expected in the midst of such privations4 ,but at the oral examinations1 on the #beth1 the various classes gratified their teachers and visitors4 ,among the latter were our staunch friend1 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,burgett1 and three colored pastors4 ,the brightest color in the bow appeared in the anniversary exercises4 ,the preparation had not interfered with regular lessons1 but their thoroughness was manifest in the hearty testimony of the leading white ,m4 ,e4 pastor in the city1 ,rev4 ,j4 ,o4 ,andrews1 who had offered the opening prayer4 ,the exercises were witnessed by over #hjj people1 some of them outside1 at the several departments of the school1 and find it reconstructed after the most approved style of the ,grammar ,school4 ,we find it presided over by six accomplished lady teachers1 ,misses ,chandler1 ,warner1 ,fitts1 ,jewett and ,bishop1 and ,mrs4 ,steere1 who has charge of the musical department4 ,we find it numbering #bbj pupils2 we find custom work done2 we find the temperance text-books proposed by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 introduced1 as in all its schools of the ,south1 and working wonders in laying the foundations for a temperance-loving generation4 ,we test the capacity of the ,home and find it elastic enough to take in sixteen guests beyond the fifteen of the regular family2 we find it a marvel of convenience and taste and economy4 ,we find the church edifice a gem of beauty1 with its noble bell1 which does double duty in serving the church and the school2 and we find the saving of several thousand dollars of expense and the superior quality of workmanship due to the personal supervision of ,rev4 ,d4 ,d4 ,dodge1 the pastor1 who selected the material and had the jobs done by the day4 ,we hear of a ,sister of ,charity1 who says that the only thing in ,wilmington she covets is this group of buildings4 ,we hear of citizens pronouncing it an ornament to the city4 ,we hear of leading pastors in the city saying that it is doing the best work in ,wilmington for the colored people4 ,we find that the entire work on the three buildings was done by colored mechanics1 except one master mason on the brick work and a dozen days of bricklaying4 ,and so the ,conference finds itself in situ4 ,the opening sermon is preached by ,rev4 ,a4 ,connet4 ,the moderator of the last year is re-elected for this year1 ,rev4 ,g4 ,s4 ,smith1 of ,raleigh1 a graduate of ,atlanta1 a member looks much like coal4 ,we stop for lunch at a point where we can get a good view of the cataract in both directions1 called ,wady ,el ,hamar4 ,then we leave the river for about two hours1 ascend another high desert plateau1 and gradually descend again to an open plain1 where nestles a village called ,genenila4 ,we camp for the night opposite the large1 fruitful island of ,artoli1 where one of our guides lives4 ,in the evening we receive two presents of milk4 ,thursday1 ,dec4 #bi4--,the second guide swam over this morning from ,artoli4 ,we started at #g4ae1 and traversed a magnificent plain1 needing only water upon it to make it a most fruitful region4 ,as we approach ,berber the houses are better built1 and the villages are larger and more numerous4 ,we passed the following in ,a sheep was killed1 and a grand banquet served in the most royal style4 ,we were quite surprised and overwhelmed at all this unexpected kindness4 ,but the grand old ,arab1 under whose father #e1jjj
