,hart upon the ,mountains of ,spices4 ,,this divine ,poem1 is designed by the ,holy ,spirit1 to exhibit the love of ,god our dear ,saviour1 to his chosen people1 with all the happy consequences of that eternal affection4 ,the whole book is full of ,christ1 as the all in all of the ,church1 which he has purchased with his blood--the union subsisting between the elect head and chosen body4 ,what ,christ is to them1 and they are to him1 is strikingly set forth by many well-known metaphors4 ,perhaps there is nothing of greater importance in the ,bible than the ,union subsisting between ,jesus and his ,church1 the whole ,scriptures are full of it2 all our salvation depends upon it4 ,the highest idea of ,union is that glorious oneness in the three ,persons the adorable ,trinity2 that though they are distinct in ,persons1 ,names and ,offices1 yet they are one in the divine incomprehensible ,essence4 ,the next idea of ,union is the hypostatical ,union of ,god in our ,nature3 the ,word made ,flesh and dwelling among us4 ,this is the mystery of ,godliness4 ,the ,union between the head and members is the principal subject of this ,song4 ,that ,christ and his ,people are one1 is an everlasting truth1 the date of it is eternal1 it is indissolvable1 it is mysterious1 it is perfect1 and will endure to all eternity4 ,hence it is compared to the ,union that subsists between the foundation of a building and its superstructure4 ,christ is the foundation stone1 the corner stone1 the tried stone1 and will be the top stone4 ,this ,union is set forth by the metaphor of the head and the body1 while the love that united both is set forth in this song1 by the neck4 ,the self-moving love of ,god will keep this body and head in eternal ,union4 ,this is also represented by the ,vine and the ,branches4 ,i am the ,vine1 ye are the ,branches4 ,all our fruit depends on ,union with this ,vine--,in me is thy fruit found4 ,the scriptures shew this doctrine by the ,union that subsists between the ,husband and his ,wife3 this says the ,apostle is a great mystery2 but ,i speak concerning ,christ and his ,church4 ,in consequence of this ,union with ,christ and his ,people1 they become partakers of the same ,spirit with him4 ,he that is joined to the ,lord is one spirit4 ,he took our nature1 we take his spirit1 and like the men of ,judah1 we have two parts in ,david4 ,we are bone of bone1 and flesh of his flesh2 and the ,apostle tells us1 we are members of his body1 of his flesh1 and of his bones4 ,christ being united to his ,church1 beholds it with admiration2 highly commends her1 and to shew how dear she is to him1 he laid down his life for her1 in the set time1 to favor our souls4 ,he subdues our enmity1 melts our hearts1 reconciles our wills1 draws our affections to himself1 and leads our faith to admire him1 believe in him1 rest on him1 and be satisfied with him4 ,he loves us1 we love him2 he chose us1 we chuse him2 he is delighted in us1 we in him2 he sought us1 we seek him2 he commands us1 we commend him2 he draws near to us1 we draw near to him2 he loves the company of his people1 they desire his2 he invites them to his arms1 his house1 his table1 and to holy familiarity with him4 ,his people seeing his glory1 beauty1 suitableness1 and love1 intreat him to visit them1 to meet them1 to abide with them1 to be in them1 walk with them1 talk with them1 and indulge them with his company4 ,thus the ,union is mutual1 and sweet communion is the blessed effect of it4 ,the ,saviour must see of the travail of his soul1 in their complete conversion4 ,he longs for their coming home1 and they long to get home to see him1 who is the brightness of the ,father's glory1 and the express image of his ,person4 ,under this sweet influence of the spirit of love1 the ,church breathes forth her earnest desires--,make haste my beloved1 and be thou like to a ,roe1 or a young ,hart upon the mountains of spices4 ,the first petition in this song is for clear manifestations of his love4 ,let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth4 ,and the last petition is the language of the text1 the earnest desire to see his face4 ,this is the ,alpha and ,omega of the ,spirit's teaching4 ,we shall first consider the object desired4--,my beloved4 ,secondly1 ,her earnest request1 ,make haste4 ,and thirdly1 ,the metaphor here made use of1 ,be thou like a ,roe1 or a young ,hart upon the mountains of spices4 ,first--,the glorious object of the desire of every one taught of ,god1 emphatically stiled ,my beloved4 ,this title is given to ,jesus1 nineteen or twenty times in this book2 and no doubt is intended to point out the high esteem the church has of her ,saviour2 the clearest1 the sweetest evidence of a person's interest in ,christ1 is love to the dear ,god-,man ,mediator4 ,this principle is shed abroad in the heart2 it is always in the believer as a principle2 but it is not always shed abroad in the feeling sense of it1 we wish it was1 as it is calculated carry us above the love of sin1 the love of self1 the love of the creature1 and the love of the world4 ,christ as the ,christ of ,god1 is the darling of heaven2 the ,father loves him1 and is well pleased with him4 ,the ,holy ,spirit's principal aim in all his operations is to glorify him2 the holy angels admire and adore him1 as their elect head2 the spirits of just men1 made perfect1 look on him with holy wonder1 with rapture1 and joy2 while every poor1 tried1 humble believer1 trusts in him1 leans upon him1 hopes in him1 and sincerely desires to love him above all things else4 ,and if ,i know any thing of experience1 ,i must say in the behalf of the church1 it is our principal grief we think on him so little1 trust him so little1 admire and adore him so little4 ,this is a lamentation1 and must be so to the end of our days4 ,but our days of mourning on this subject will have an end--and ,till then ,i would thy love proclaim1 ,with every feeling breath2 ,and may the music of thy name1 ,refresh my soul in death4 ,christ is the beloved of his church for what is in himself1 as ,god-,man ,mediator4 ,secondly1 ,christ is beloved of his church for what he has done1 and is now doing in heaven4 ,if we view him as ,god1 possessing all divine perfections1 and these harmonizing and engaged in our salvation1 ,o6 how glorious do they all appear6 ,divine sovereignty chose us to salvation2 loved moved him to make this choice2 wisdom drew the wonderous plan2 power executed it2 goodness made provision for us2 truth makes us free2 faithfulness is engaged to make good his promises2 pity redeemed us2 compassion leads us to repentance2 holiness makes him all-glorious to us2 righteousness justifies2 justice forgives us2 and perfection renders us compleat in ,christ4 ,thus all his sublime attributes center in our salvation1 and render ,jesus as equal with the ,father1 beloved to us1 if we view him as ,man and ,mediator4 ,there is1 says the ,apostle to us1 ,one ,god and one ,mediator1 the ,man1 7i4e4 the ,god ,man7 ,christ ,jesus4 ,in this human nature he is the perfection of beauty2 the ,holy ,spirit formed it1 the ,father provided it1 and the eternal ,son of ,god appeared in it as our ,day's ,man4 ,it was filled with the ,holy ,ghost--it was a sacred ,temple1 the residence of ,deity4 ,the word was made flesh--the word was ,god4 ,all things were made by him4 ,this human nature was holy1 harmless1 undefiled1 and separated from sinners2 and such an ,high ,priest became us4 ,and by virtue of the ,union of the ,godhead2 this dear ,god-,man is the ,beloved of the whole ,church4 ,if we consider him in his ,mediatorial capacity1 sustaining his glorious offices1 as ,prophet1 ,priest1 and ,king4 ,these offices no doubt he refers to when he said ,i am the way1 and the truth1 and the life2 to these he was called4 ,these he executes in the church1 and in the hearts of all believers4 ,he enlightens us as a ,prophet1 he intercedes as a ,priest1 and he reigns as a ,king4 ,he teaches the way to heaven as a ,prophet1 he opens the way as a ,priest1 and he brings into the way as a ,king4 ,he preached glad tidings to the meek as a ,prophet1 he binds up the broken-hearted as a ,priest1 and he opens the prison doors as a king4 ,these glorious offices he exercises in the souls of his children1 and viwing him faithful in his house1 he is truly lovely to his church4 ,if we view him in his glorious titles1 it appears the ,holy ,ghost has ransacked all the endearing ties of nature1 and all the lovely instances of his creative power1 to set him forth--the affectionate ,husband1 the constant ,friend1 the skilful ,physician1 the tender ,father1 the able ,counsellor1 the sympathizing ,mother and ,nurse1 the wise ,law-giver1 the lovely ,prince1 the faithful ,ambassador1 and the ,advocate with the ,father2 the guide of his ,children1 and the ,captain of their salvation4 ,he is represented as a ,lamb1 a ,hen1 a ,hind2 surely ,all over glorious is our ,lord2 ,to be admir'd1 and yet ador'd3 ,his worth if all the nations knew1 ,sure the whole earth would love him too4 ,the operations of his hands as the adorable ,creator1 sets him forth in his goodness1 greatness1 and glory--the earth is full of his praise-- ,he shines in the sun1 refreshes in the breeze1 ,glows in the stars1 and blossoms in the trees4 ,every drop of dew1 every shower of rain1 every blade of grass1 every rolling peal of thunder1 and every flash of lightning1 loudly proclaims the eternal power and ,godhead of him who lived1 and loved1 and died for us4 ,the word of the eternal truth1 the ,scriptures1 are an exhibition of his loving heart4 ,its histories1 types1 shadows1 and parables--all the illustrious characters that appeared before him were only as dim stars1 to usher in the glorious luminary1 the ,light of ,life4 ,every promise1 invitation1 and declaration1 all1 all6 proclaim the ,beloved4 ,o for hearts to love him more1 and serve him without reserve1 and to long to be with him1 that we may behold his glory for ever4 ,but1 ,secondly1 ,the ,request made for his speedy appearance1 ,make hast my beloved2 be thou like a ,roe1 or young ,hart upon the mountains of spices4 ,this may include in it the earnest wish of the ,old ,testament saints for the ,incarnation of ,jesus2 it had been long foretold1 and it was expected by all the saints1 though nearly four thousand years rolled away before their desires were accomplished4 ,the dear ,messiah made his appearance at last1 to put away sin1 to honor the ,law1 to satisfy ,justice1 to glorify the attributes of ,deity1 bar the mouth of the bottomless ,pit1 and open the gates of the celestial ,city4 ,how beautiful the language of the ,church1 7,,te ,,deum7 ,when thou tookest upon thee to deliver man thou didst not abhor the ,virgin's womb4 ,when thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death1 thou dist open the kingdom of heaven to all ,believers4 ,this was the subject matter of the faith of ,old ,testament saints4 ,this important ,god-glorifying event1 they anticipated1 and though millions of the elect died without the sight1 they all died in faith1 embracing the promises1 and ,jesus in them4 ,this ,chapter opens and closes with their ardent wish1 ,o that thou wert as my brother1 that sucked the breasts of my mother6 ,make haste my ,beloved4 ,when ,believers1 on any occasion1 pray thus1 we are not to suppose they wish for the blessing before the time1 though in fact1 as the ,saviour said on another occasion1 ,your time is always ready4 ,but there is a time for every purpose1 a set time1 and ,christ came in the fulness of time1 nor will he delay one blessing laid up for his people beyond the time4 ,faith is always willing to wait ,god's time1 but unbelief is always in a hurry1 ,he that hasteth with his feet sinneth--he that believeth shall not make haste4 ,secondly1 ,the ,request may be considered as made by the ,church of ,god in the depths of trouble1 when storms of fierce persecution has involved her1 or awful errors abounding and carrying away many professors2 and such has been the case of the ,church frequently3 this may be seen clearly in the state of the ,gospel ,church1 as stated in the #abth of the ,revelations4 ,blessed be ,god1 in the worst times1 there have been a few praying souls1 who have been concerned for the glory of the ,redeemer1 the cause of truth1 and the welfare of ,zion4 ,such have united their petitions for the delivery of ,zion1 and obtained an answer1 as ,moses did1 ,i have seen the afflictions of my people1 and ,i am come down to deliver them4 ,and as the ,psalmist also obtained the blessed answer1 ,for the oppression of the poor1 and the sighing of the needy1 now will ,i arise1 saith the ,lord4 ,thirdly1 ,this ,request for the coming of ,jesus1 may be considered as the language of a soul in straits and difficulties4 ,hence1 some have exclaimed1 ,make haste to help me1 ,o my ,god1 make no long tarrying4 ,the burden of guilt1 the power of unbelief1 the temptation of the enemy1 the frowns of the world1 the loss of all that is near and dear1 the fears of being lost at last1 that what has been experienced is but the attainments of an hypocrite2 and at the same time1 amidst all these things there is to be found the one good thing toward the ,lord ,god of ,israel1 an inward breathing after ,jesus1 a thirsting for the living ,god--a desire to be delivered in ,god's way1 either by an open manifestation of ,christ to the soul1 or a strengthening1 faith-encouraging hope1 applying a promise or melting the soul in the flames of eternal love4 ,a kind hint1 a love-token1 or a sweet view of ,jesus afresh4--,hence the argument of the church of old1 ,wilt thou not revive us again1 that we may rejoice in thee8 ,make haste therefore1 my beloved4 ,fourthly1 ,this ,request may be considered as the church's desire for the manifestative presence of ,christ2 nothing1 perhaps1 can exceed this ,new ,covenant promise1 ,i will dwell with them4--,surely with rapture and surprise we must ask1 ,and will ,god in very deed dwell with men on the earth8 ,stupendous condescension6 infinite grace and love6 ,stand in amaze ye rolling skies1 ,the presence of ,jesus is life and peace--it softens the hard cares of life1 sanctifies humble poverty2 makes obedience easy2 trials sweet2 ordinances precious2 and eternity desirable4 ,the presence of ,jesus endears the blessings of providence2 adds a glory to creation1 and causes the earth to be filled with his praise4 ,this gives a relish to the bounties of nature2 adds a double beauty to flowers1 and a double sweetness to fruits4 ,this ,request may be considered as the language of the whole ,church1 longing for the second coming of ,jesus ,christ4 ,it is clearly revealed that the ,lord will appear again the second time1 without spot and sin1 to salvation2 the brightest display of history1 and the complete ,deliverer of his people4 ,it is necessary he should appear again--the consummation of the ,marriage ,union is an event our dear ,lord must accomplish1 when he will leave the third heavens1 and descend into the air with his heavenly retinue1 to meet his ,bride complete1 body and soul1 upon her resurrection from the dead4 ,o what a joyful meeting of the heavenly ,bridegroom and the spiritual ,bride1 of the glorious company of saints and angels1 of the body and souls of ,god's children1 to sin no more1 to sorrow no more1 but to be like ,jesus1 see his face1 enjoy his smiles1 and so be for ever with the ,lord4 ,the thought is animating--,come1 ,lord ,jesus1 come quickly6 ,make haste1 my beloved--the event will be awful1 but glorious1 the procession such as never has taken place in the upper or lower worlds4 ,perhaps some things are said about it1 in allusion to earthly processions when a judge enters a town4 ,o when the stars fall1 when the sun hides his head1 when the moon is confounded1 when the world is in a blaze1 then1 then6 ,o gracious ,saviour1 own us in that day for thine2 and he surely will1 ,o believers1 as you have been enabled to own him in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation2 as sure as you are born again of the spirit1 love him in soul1 cleave to him in faith and hope1 depend on him for life and salvation1 and love all his gracious appearances4 ,the crown is laid up for them who love his appearance4--,this leads us to notice the metaphor here made use of1 a ,roe or a young ,hart upon the mountains of spices4 ,this is a phrase frequently used in this ,song2 and sometimes ,christ is compared to these lovely creatures1 no doubt1 for their loving natures1 excellent and choice1 for the antipathy between them and serpents--for their thirst1 after the conflict they usually have with ,serpents3 they are also remarkable for longivity1 but in this text are mentioned to shew their remarkable swiftness of foot3 their speediness is used to set forth the swiftness of ,christ to the soul1 over mountains of sorrow1 hills of grief1 over all the difficulties that are in the way4 ,the request1 then1 is simply thus1 ,make haste my beloved1 and fly swift to me1 as a ,roe or ,hart upon mountains1 where they delight to run and skip3 so his gracious presence is desired on the mountains of ,zion1 the congregations of the saints1 and the hearth and families of believers4 ,the celebrated ,dr4 ,gill thinks these mountains refer to the glory beyond the grave3 the height and sublimity of this happy state2 it is above1 reserved in heaven--a hope1 a crown laid up1 the prize of the high calling--it is a permanency1 an everlasting joy--pleasures for evermore6 ,o ye blest scenes of permanent delight6 ,full without measure1 lasting without bounds6 ,a perpetuity of bliss is bliss4 ,i trust our dear friend and ,brother is now in the enjoyment of this unspeakable felicity2 to this all the people of ,god were predestinated by the ,father--for this they were redeemed by ,jesus--for this they are called by the ,holy ,spirit1 made partakers of a divine nature and preserved unto this kingdom and glory4 ,this inheritance is sure to all the seed2 but there must be a preparation for it1 a calling out of the world1 a good hope through grace2 the pardon of sin1 and a receiving the righteousness of ,god our ,saviour4 ,there must be a knowledge of ,jesus1 union to him and communion with him2 this is our meetness for glory2 and however uncandid it may be deemed1 ,i am bold to affirm1 that no man can behold the face of ,god with joy1 without those blessings in time4 ,hear this ,ye opposers1 transgressors of every degree1 ,and formal professors1 the worst of the three4 ,as it respects our departed ,friend1 it appears he had lived in nature's darkness1 sin1 and misery1 like the rest of mankind1 till about a year ago1 when it pleased the ,lord to lead him to hear the ,gospel as preached by unworthy me4 ,i believe the passage ,i had occasion at that time to discourse on was1 ,look not upon me because ,i am black1 because the sun hath looked on me4 ,i rather suppose his convictions began about this time2 the word laid hold of his heart2 he saw himself a lost sinner1 justly condemned by the ,law1 which he soon found to be spiritual1 that it cursed him for a sinful thought as well as sinful works4 ,the fears of death1 the guilt of sin1 the suggestions of ,satan1 and the dread of judgment and eternity1 were all felt by him4--,he found himself shut up in unbelief1 and neither might or power of his own could extricate him4--,he was at the same time sadly tried in circumstances1 so that the hand of ,god seemed to go out against him in every direction4 ,but that most blessed ,spirit of all grace1 who had taken possession of his soul1 and given him light to see and life to feel himself a sinner1 also begot in him a living hope1 that he should be delivered4 ,the ,holy ,spirit convinced him of unbelief1 and at the same time operated on his mind as a spirit of faith4 ,he convinced him of his carnal enmity1 yet operated as a spirit of love4 ,thus the blessed ,spirit generally deals with his dear people4 ,our ,brother1 amidst all he felt1 attended constantly on the word--and he that waiteth on his ,master shall be honored1 and so he found it4 ,the glorious ,gospel exhibits the eternal love of the ,father1 the freeness of divine grace1 and the pardon of the vilest1 through the blood of the ,lamb4 ,these immortal truths1 accompanied by the power of the ,spirit1 begot in his mind a pleasing hope of salvation4 ,love operated in his heart as faith was led to eye the ,saviour1 and by waiting on the ,lord his faith grew strong in the doctrines of the ,cross1 so that he gradually experienced the joys of salvation1 which did not leave him1 but for a season1 till his dissolution4 ,through a variety of trials and wants his health began rapidly to decline1 and soon baffled the use of medicine3 but as the body was thus gravitating to its own center1 the dust1 his soul was happy in a good hope1 through grace1 the love of ,god1 and the precious ,person of ,jesus4 ,when confined to his bed ,i had occasion to visit him often1 and generally found him happy4 ,i must confess ,i staggered a little at his felicity1 but ,i knew the ,holy ,spirit was a ,sovereign1 and had a right to do as he pleased4 ,but ,i apprized our ,friend1 that ,i doubted whether he would go quite so easy to heaven1 without a cloud1 without an assault1 without a temptation3 not but he was deeply afflicted in his body2 and it is the mercy of ,god's elect to experience this grand truth1 ,he stayeth his rough wind in the day of the ,east wind4--,in a few days time my prediction of his troubles came to pass4 ,he was tried and tempted indeed4 ,his body getting worse1 ,satan took occasion from some trying circumstances which occurred1 to distress his mind1 which absolutely deprived him of his rationality for some few days and nights1 with very few intervals of sanity4 ,but while in this afflicted state ,prayer was made for him constantly among us1 and by the kindness of the ,church1 especially the younger brethren1 who were assiduous in their attention to him1 we had the happiness of seeing him restored1 and once more composed1 and happy in ,jesus4 ,but the time drew near that he must die3 the ,lord dealt very graciously with him in that solemn period1 for which we have much cause to be thankful4 ,on the ,lord's-day morning of his death1 he was visited by many godly characters4 ,he looked around on them all1 and thanked them for their kind attention to him and his family4 ,when it was intimated they should soon see each other in glory1 he smiled1 and said1 ,i shall be so taken up with ,jesus1 ,i shall not be able to think much of any one else4 ,he now appeared to be dying upward1 but spoke of it without dismay2 being wearied he desired to be once more turned in his bed4 ,he dosed a little while2 when well awoke1 he exclaimed1 ,christ is all in all6 ,he paused2 then earnestly said ,blessed ,jesus1 hast thou not promised ,i shall be with thee8 and thou canst not be worse than thy word4 ,he paused again1 then cried out1 ,he has done all things well4 ,then he said again1 ,thou dear ,redeemer1 dying ,lamb1 ,i love to hear of thee4 ,at three in the afternoon he seemed to be sinking in the arms of death1 and solemnly said to a friend1 ,i am getting nearer4--,then he said soon after1 ,i am very near--,i am quite close--7to his eternal home he meant74 ,at about the close of the day after1 having laid some time quiet1 he exclaimed1 ,come ,lord1 come ,lord ,jesus1 come quickly6 ,come ,lord1 come6--,he is come1 he is come6 ,i come1 ,i come6 ,his voice gradually fell1 but as long as his lips could move1 his friends could hear him say1 ,come1 come1 come6 ,with these words he dropt asleep in the arms of our blessed ,lord--to whom be glory4 ,,amen4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,finis4 99 99 99 99 99 ,thomas1 ,printer1 ,red ,lion ,street1 ,borough4
