be with you3--,i received your kind present of the ,bundle of ,pens1 and beg your acceptance of my thanks for the same2 ,i really stood in need them1 and ,i suppose you thought so by the badness of my writing1 or my reluctance in sending out more ,sermoms from the ,press4 ,the ,pens were very good1 and ,i hope to use them for the ,glory of ,god only1--whilst laying before me they led me to reflect on the passage ,i selected for a ,text preached from on the following ,sunday morning1 and ,i now send you the outlines of the ,discourse4 ,this ,sermon will no doubt meet with the same reception that others have2 some bless1 some curse1 some believe the things that are spoken1 and some believe not1 but to the great ,head of the ,church1 ,i humbly commit my feeble attempt to shew forth his praise1 praying you may be able to ascertain your personal interest in the ,book of ,life1 where the names of the elect are enrolled1 and remain1 ,your obliged ,servant in ,christ ,jesus1 ,picture3 ,signature of ,j4 ,church ,a ,sermon4 ,,ii4 ,,corinthians1 ,chap4 iii4 ,verses #b #c4 ,ye are our ,epistle written in our hearts1 known and read of all men4 ,for as much as ye are manifestly declared to be the ,epistle of ,christ ministered by us1 written1 not with ink1 but with the spirit of the ,living ,god1--not in tables of stone1 but in fleshy tables of the heart4 ,,the ,epistle out of which this ,text is selected1 was with the one proceeding it1 written to the ,church of ,jesus at ,corinth2 many of the ,lord's elect people were in this place1 and the ,apostle ,paul was sent here to proclaim the glad tidings of salvation2 the ,lord was graciously with him1 and gave testimony to the word of his grace1 those who received the truth1 being knit together in spirit1 formed themselves into a body4 ,among them the ,apostle abode two years and then departed4 ,soon after his departure he heard of their dissentions2 defections in doctrines and ordinances1 luxury1 intemperance1 uncleanness1 and abuses of their religious liberties1 litigious law suits and irregularities in their public assemblies1 he writes this ,epistle to correct them1 to warn1 instruct1 and direct in all important subjects4 ,false teachers made sad work among them likewise2 endeavouring to set their minds against the ,apostle to bring him into contempt that his ministry might lose its efficacy1 and also to misrepresent his doctrine1 as tending to licentiousness1 whereas there was nothing but the violation of law and conscience1 the effect of their ministry and which is to be seen to this day amongst most teachers of the law such as direct their hearers to the law instead of ,jesus1 as the law fulfiller3--these in general are full of wrath1 bitterness1 pride1 and carnal enmity1 and though great advocates for holiness and good works never perform any without making it well known1 that they may have to plead in the last day3--8,lord1 ,lord1 have we not done many wonderful works80 ,however the ,apostle in this second epistle triumphs1 that his ministry is a sweet savour to ,god2 to some it would terminate in their present salvation1 to others add to their condemnation for rejecting it4 ,then he levels his artillery at those false apostles1 who had formed themselves into a body and gave letters of recommendation to one another to the ,churches where they went1 they could go no where without these letters4 ,but ,paul and every true ,apostle needed not such recommendation4 8,do we begin again to commend ourselves to you1 or need we1 as some others1 epistles of commendation to you1 or letters of commendation from you80 ,no1 ye are our epistles2 you were written on our hearts1 we travailed in spirit for your conversion1 and all could see the change made in you1 it was so clearly manifested to be the writing of ,christ1 which we preach2 the impressions made on you could not be erased from the mind1 and which will be seen in the last great day4 ,so runs the ,text which we will proceed to notice in the following order3 first1 the writing2 secondly1 the means2 thirdly1 its publicity3 8,ye are our epistles written in our hearts1 known and read of all men40 ,we shall first consider the writing4 ,first1 the writing3 ,our covenant1 ,god has promised that he will write his laws on the hearts of his people2 that he will write on them his new name and the city of ,god4 ,these blessings in the heart are the writings he himself will own it is his own image and the superscription to this image all the elect people of ,god are divinely predestinated2 there never was but one image in which the great ,jehovah expressed his delight1 namely1 8,behold1 my servant whom ,i uphold1 mine elect in whom my soul delighteth40 ,this is the image and all others he will surely despise3 this image is the pattern model exemplar1 it is ,christ's holy nature and as the elect head of his family1 possessing all divine and human excellencies1 graces and qualifications2 these excellencies shining in the human nature even in the seven-fold operations of the holy spirit that was upon him1 this was the image in which ,god made man3 8in the image of ,god made he man40 ,in this he delighted even from eternity1 for ,adam was formed the shadow of him that was to come1 from this image ,adam fell1 and to this we are brought again by the renewing influences of the ,holy ,ghost3 hence the ,apostle says1 we all with open face beholding as in a glass1 the glory of the ,lord are changed into the same image1 this image the ,apostle declares is wisdom1 righteousness and true holiness1 it is an experimental knowledge of ,jesus and a covenant ,god in him4 ,our dear ,lord is called wisdom4 ,god made man and endued him with wisdom and we are made wise unto salvation1 through faith in ,christ ,jesus1 this image is love2 the ,saviour is love also2 ,adam had it1 and it is shed abroad in our hearts by the ,holy ,ghost given to us2 this image is righteousness3 this is another name our ,lord bears2 in righteousness the first ,adam was created and our privilege is to know that in the ,lord we have righteousness and strength2 this image is true holiness1 it is the holy spirit that makes a man holy a spirit of light1 life and love1 this holy spirit breathed into ,adam the breath of life1--rested on the ,redeemer and takes up its abode in every believer's heart--all holiness besides this is false--this is writing on us1 this is stamping the image of ,jesus3 love to this image wherever we see it1 evidences we are passed from death unto life2--this image which ,christ bears1 he stamped on the hearts of his ,apostles2 the church being converted through their ministry having this image communicated to their souls1 are called their children1 for this the ,apostles travailed in spirit till ,christ was formed in them the hope of glory4 ,second1 the writing in my ,text is not only the image of ,god1 but also the words of truth which these men preached1--hence ,paul says in the ,text1 this writing was ministered by us1 these words are of ,divine ,authority1 they were first received of the ,father1 by the ,lord ,jesus in the everlasting ,covenant2 during our ,lord's ,ministry upon the earth they were applied to the hearts of the ,apostles2 hence the ,redeemer says1 in ,john xvii4 8,i have given them the words thou gavest me1 and they have believed thou didst send me40 ,the ,saviour received the ,father's ,mind and ,will concerning the elect and their salvation2 this was written on his heart1 then copied off in the word1 and afterwards wrote on the hearts of ,god's ,ministers1 and through them conveyed to the hearts of ,god's elect with power3--the ,will of the ,father is made known to ,christ as ,mediator1--the ,saviour makes it known in his word by his spirit1 and ministers to ,god's children4 ,thus it appears1 what is in ,christ's human nature1 is to be found in all his people1 and what the ,father has made known to him1 he has kindly revealed to us1--this appears the sense of the writing in the ,text1 the love of ,god shed abroad in the heart1 and the word having an abiding place in the soul1 producing its glorious fruits to his honor2 these are the laws written within1 not on tables of stone1 which could receive no lively impression1 but on the new hearts1 ,god has promised to give his people3--,i come secondly1 to shew the means1 8written by us40 ,those who receive the truth in the love of it are compared to epistles or letters wrote which contain the mind and will of ,god1 and it is evident there must be pen1 paper1 and ink4 ,to this the ,apostle alludes2 here the minister is compared to a pen1 to shew their meaness1 their entire dependance1 and that they cannot act to any good purpose only as they are led2 as pens1 they must be shaped1 formed1 cut on purpose1 simple means1 yet accomplishing great ends1 no merit due1 yet useful1 pleasant1 and prized as it suits the purpose1 hard or soft1 giving broad or fine strokes1 often wants nibbing or mending1 used to write on various subjects1 charges1 sentences1 consolations1 love1 promises1 and pardons3--this is a fit emblem of the ministers of the gospel in their different gifts1 as called and qualified by the ,great ,head of the church4 ,some of the most simple1 mean1 and obscure characters have been employed in this service of ,jesus in the great work of the ministry4 ,elisha1 from following the plough1 ,david1 the sheep1 and ,amos from the herds1 ,peter1 and the other ,apostles from their fishing-boats1 ,john ,bunyan from mending kettles1 and ,william ,huntington from the coal barge3 and ,paul declares that ,god has chosen the base things to confound the wise1 that no flesh should glory in his presence4 ,such ministers are cut and formed for the work2 cut also from the from of ,godliness1 from fleshly confidences1 from dependance1 or any thing short of the ,almighty minister in the ,church4 ,by trials1 by divine light1 life and love1 by knowledge and wisdom they are formed and furnished in heart1 head1 and tongue4 ,hence ,paul says1 ,god has made us ministers of the ,new ,testament1 and spiritual counsel in the heart of such men1 is as deep water1 and men of understanding shall draw it out4 ,this makes their tongue like the pen of a ready writer1 whilst their hearts teach their mouths and adds learning to their lips2 by such means the spirit has accomplished the external designs of ,jehovah1 in bringing souls to the knowledge of a dear ,saviour2 hence the ,prophet predicts the glorious effects of converting grace3 they shall beat their swords into plough-shares1 and their spears into pruning hooks2--this may be seen in ,paul1 and many others who have been persecutors1 whose hearts and tongues have been afterwards used in turning up the ground of sinner's hearts1 and employed in ,god's vintage4 ,no merit is due to the greatest preacher in the world1 for he is nothing but as he is made1 used and guided any more than a pen2 hence the acknowledgement of one minister1 for all ,i laboured more abundantly than they all1 yet not ,i but the grace ,god2 we must speak as the spirit of ,god gives us utterance1 and as we are led into the truths of ,god's most holy word1 nor can we go but as we are led2--whence the promise1 he shall guide you into all truths2 all means must be used by the minister2 it is the spirit alone can bless in public and private2 ,god giveth the increase1 as pens differ1 so do the ministers of ,god in their knowledge and ability1 having different gifts1 some give broad1 others fine strokes1 some cry an alarm in ,god's holy mountains1 others speak more comfortably4 8,he that believeth not shall be damned10 8except a man be born again he cannot enter into the kingdom of ,god30 these are broad strokes indeed2 others are commanded to cry unto her that her iniquity is pardoned1 to shew the richess of grace and mercy in the salvation of the soul1 the covenant love1 ancient counsels1 the glorious end of the law1 and the unspeakable efficacy of the blood of the lamb3--some are capacitated to explain mysterious passages in the word2 mysterious experience of grace and providence2 such are sons of consolation1 all these worketh that one1 and the self-same spirit that divideth to every man severally as he will4 ,as pens1 we often want mending1 we are apt to get dull when ,god is pleased to cut us1 that we may be the more useful to others2 if we are afflicted1 it is for your consolation2 this appears hard to us1--but faith bows with adoring submission1 when the head fall into the water4 ,the ,prophet cut down a stick and cast it into the water also1 which brought it up again2 so the ,lord appoints that his ministers should dive deep into tribulations to bring out his dear elect people4 ,these pens are used to write charges and sentences4 ,so ,peter charged the blood of ,christ to the consciences of his hearers2 and ,paul declares if the ,gospel be hid1 be it hid to them that are lost4 ,the ,saviour said whatsoever they bind on earth should be bound in heaven4 ,pens are used to write on subjects of consolation1 pardons1 and promises1 and these glad tidings we are to proclaim to the broken and contrite hearts of ,god's people2 these must be held in his hands and used at his pleasure to accomplish his good will of purpose and promise4 ,these must in time be wore out and laid aside1 affecting thought1 yet glorious prospect4 ,your ,fathers1 where are they1 and do the ,prophets live for ever8 ,death worketh in us1 but life in you1 as candles that waste away their bodies in giving light to others4 ,this the ,prophet saw in the vision of ,cherubims1 when they stood they let down their wings4 ,i have often admired the wisdom of ,god in the qualifications of his dear ministers4 ,let not one minister envy1 oppose or speak against another1 every one will and must do his own work2 they can never do the work of another4 ,here ,i must introduce a beautiful though simple1 yet just and candid remark of ,mr4 ,huntington1 in his book called the ,qualifications of a ,minister1 page #caf4 8,the ,lord's army in ,london is marshalled in three ranks2 there are some professing nobility and gentry2 these being learned1 ,god sends gentlemen of eminent learning to preach to them3--the second rank consists chiefly of mechanics of good education1 and ,god sends mechanics to preach to them3 the third battallion consists of servants1 journeyman1 a great number of old chair women1 together with some scavengers1 lamp-lighters1 and hod-men40 ,now1 you and ,i must be standard bearers to this battallion of light infantry1 and we are protected by the same laws1 fight under the same banner1 and are no less beloved of the same king2 our temporal pay may be less1 put perhaps our spiritual pay is more4 8,ye are our epistle written on our hearts10 the paper on which these things are written4 ,christ and his word are the writing2 the ,apostle says it is the heart2 ,i will write my laws on their hearts2--hence the prayer1 ,lord have mercy upon us and write all these thy laws on our hearts we beseech thee8 ,the first law wrote on the heart is the moral law2 this is sent home to shew us our sin and danger1 to point out our state1 and make us feel our guilt4 ,by the law is the knowledge of sin2 ,i had not known it but for the law2 under this tuition we are1 till ,jesus proclaims liberty from its curse and bondage1 then we are at liberty to serve him as sons and not as slaves1 in imputed righteousness1 in the spirit of holiness and in filial fear4 ,this is the design of the liberty of the ,gospel3 ,christ formed in the heart--faith wrought1 there embracing the atonement1 purifying the conscience1 whilst a good hope through grace leads and animates us with the purity of mind and conduct2 this is the writing on the heart1 not merely in the head or outward conduct4 ,a man may have clear notions and a moral conduct1 and yet nothing of this writing on the heart1 because destitute of the new heart itself4 ,this new heart are the faculties of the soul under the divine influence of the holy spirit4 ,this is the paper or parchment2 the understanding is enlightened1 the will bent on ,god-ward1 the affections led to ,jesus1 the thoughts occupied about divine things1 and the conscience renewed quickened and made tender4 ,on this heart these impressions are made for ever1 the ink used1 is the gracious influence of the spirit2--not literal ink1 or the ink of human eloquence1 nor merely moving the passions or affecting the body2 but1 the sacred powerful workings of the ,holy ,ghost2 hence the ,apostle calls it the demonstration of the spirit2 the ,saviour calls it shewing the things that are his3 this is done in such power as proves it the work of ,god4 ,all other religion but that which is attended with this power will fall to nothing like the lamps of the foolish virgins4 ,this accounts for the apostacy of many who have run well for a time and then stopped for ever2 what the spirit wrote on us can never be broken1 or washed off1 or erased1 it may at times be hid from the possessor and from others1 but it will be seen again when the ,saviour shines1 for it is in his light we are light2 the hand that begun this letter will also finish it3 hence the ,apostle says1 he was confident1 that he who had begun the good work would finish it4 ,our spiritual ,zerubabel whose hands begun to build1 his hands will also finish it4 ,god's yea and amen in the eternal covenant is manifested in the hearts of all ,god's elect people3 hence he says2--yea1 ,i have loved thee2 this shed abroad in the heart is the spirit's amen2 the believer is thus fitted for glory by a principle of love to and delight in ,god1 ,father1 ,son and ,spirit4 ,this letter must be sealed2 the seal upon this letter is the secret yet assuring influences of the spirit3 hence the ,apostle says1 after that ye believed ye were sealed with the holy spirit of promise2 the church is called a fountain sealed1 and ,god seals his law1 his new covenant blessings2 #ast among his disciples2 this sealing is intended to shew that what passes between ,god and the soul is kept a secret from others3--#bnd4 the security of these blessings1 none can rob us of them1 they are secured to us3--#crd the assurance of interest in these mercies2 this secret of the ,lord is with them that fear him1 and he will shew them his covenant the work of ,god on the heart1 agreeing with the word1 the spirit blesses us with a holy confidence that our experience is genuine1 that ,jesus is ours1 and we are his1 that we are interested in the promises of a faithful ,god1 and we believe and are sure1 that when he shall appear1 we shall be like him1 for we shall see him as he is4 ,this is the seal1 the secret1 the hidden1 the deep the sure things of ,god2 this makes known to us his love1 it is his own mark1--his own seal1--our security from the vengeance of the ,almighty1 when his desolating judgment go through the land1--our security from eternal death1 and secures our redemption from the grave4 ,grieve not1 the holy spirit whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption2--truly dreadful and presumptuous1 are those who attempt to imitate this seal of the spirit2 particularly a certain pretended ,prophetess who attempts to seal those who embrace her lies1 by writing certain words1 and assuring her deluded followers they are to be made heirs of ,god1 and joint-heirs of ,christ2 whereas the ,lord's elect ,have been made so from all eternity1 and it is the blessed work of the holy spirit to assure the conscience of its eternal security in ,christ4--,not written on a piece of paper which may be lost1 stolen1 worn out1 or burnt1 but the seal of the spirit will stand for ever4 8,when the last fire burns all things here1 ,these letters shall securely stand1 ,and in the ,lamb's fair book appear1 ,wrote by the ,eternal ,father's hand40 ,we notice the direction on it1 to our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 the ,covenant ,elect ,head1 the ,redeemer and ,saviour of poor lost sinners1 whose ,i am by gift1 by purchase1 by power1 by conquest1 and dedication1 first presented to him by the adorable ,father in the counsels of peace2 then by the eternal spirit at my conversion1 and having his image written on my soul4 ,i am directed to him as my owner1 my portion1 my master1 my eternal all1--from him ,i derived my spiritual life2 to him ,i am devoted1 ,i am his sole property and shall be to him a praise1 a glory and honour according as he purposed from all eternity that ,i should be to the praise and glory of his own grace1 formed for himself1 to shew forth his praise1 this is the direction written by the spirit1 and as the soul now rises often to him in sweet affection1 so it will at death1 when the writing is finished1 and to all eternity rivers of love1 joy1 and satisfaction will flow from him to his dear elect1 so it will sweetly return to him again4 8,the place from whence the rivers flow1 ,thither they return again40 ,those who will carry these letters home and deliver them to whom they are directed1 are doubtless the elect angels1--these attend the church of ,god individually from the moment of their birth1 till their glorification4 ,the promise of the ,father to ,jesus1 as the head belongs to the body1 he shall give his angels charge concerning thee to keep thee in all thy ways4 ,at our conversion they rejoice1--on the ministry of the gospel they attend1--round the dying beds of ,god's people they wait1--till they perform the last act of friendship to their souls1 by conducting them through into the hands and glory of their ,lord4 8,it came to pass the beggar died and was carried by angels into ,abraham's ,bosom40 ,they will doubtless be employed in the resurrection of the body1 hence the command1 8gather the wheat into my barns40 8,they leave the dust1 and on the wing1 ,rise to the middle air2 ,in shining garments meet their ,king1 ,and now adore him there4 ,o may my humble spirit stand1 ,amongst them cloth'd in white2 ,the meanest place at his right hand1 ,is infinite delight40 ,third4 ,its publicity1--known and read of all men4 ,ye who have been called out of darkness into marvellous light by our ministry1 and show forth his praises who has called you by a separation from the world1 by a change of principle and practice4 ,you have been observed1 and thousands have seen the change1 and wondered at the cause2 they knew what you once were2 they see what you now are2 they gaze1 they are astonished1 and obliged to acknowledge the change2--many hate it1 though they cannot but own it is the finger of ,god4 ,the ,deist ridicules this work as enthusiasm2--the ,libertine as mere bigotry2--he learned consider it as foolishness2--the ,pharisee considers the principles which produce these effects as antinomian1 though they have produced such glorious consequences and it is very remarkable that in all ages the great work of the ,holy ,ghost has been the subject of ridicule of its professed votaries4 ,and even in the present day some have called it mental intoxication4 ,but this work upon the soul produces in its happy possessor the faith of ,god's elect2 a good hope through grace1--fervent love to ,god1--unfeigned humility and gospel charity or love to the household of faith1--it reclaims it converts1--it turns a man's feet to ,god's testimonies enables him to deal justly with ,god1 by making use of the work of ,christ1--to deal justly with man in all his outward actions1 and whilst his faith receives the ,saviour's obedience as the end of the law1 he loves that law of ,ten commandments after the inward man1 7for by faith1 love and obedience in the spirit every law of ,god is fulfilled in him71 and by him receiving the atonement in his conscience1 the ceremonial law is fulfilled in its design1 embracing the obedience of ,christ1 the moral law is fulfilled in him2 the laws of faith1 love1 liberty1 kindness and peace are all manifested to him1 and he loves them all4 ,great peace are they which love thy law1 and nothing shall offend them4 ,he feels himself bound by the law of love to walk in all holy obedience to the laws of ,christ1 even the preceptive parts of the ,new ,testament2 thus he loves and obeys every law of ,god1 nor is he1 nor can he be against one law of ,god that is revealed in ,god's most holy word4 ,this is the doctrine ,paul preached1 and these are the sentiments ,god has been pleased to reveal to my soul1 and enabled me to preach constantly and faithfully1 and this every real believer must confess1 that ever heard me unprejudiced3 does not this give the lye to all those preachers in ,town and ,country who have falsely reported that ,i am an antinomian in principle1 and are continually maintaining antinomian sentiments2 but ,i bless ,god none can prove me an antinomian1 either in principle or practice2 but it is a lamentable truth constantly seen1 viz4 that those who belie a man's principles1 will not scruple to belie a man's practice4 ,mark this ye enemies in black2 perhaps ,god has enable me to perform as many1 and more good works1 than those who oppose me1 though they talk more about them than ,i do4 ,mr4 ,evans in his ,sketch of all ,denominations has given us an account of the sect called antinomians2 but let any impartial ,christian read that account and the above description of a believer1 and then charge me with antinomianism if they dare4 ,the best description ,i ever read of an antinomian1 was written by the late ,mr4 ,huntington1 in his ,sermon3--8,moses unveiled in the face of ,christ20 which was afterwards printed in that best of ,periodical ,publications1 the ,gospel ,magazine1 for the ,month of ,november #agih1 and which ,i take the liberty to present to my readers4 ,a ,description of an ,antinomian4 ,a real ,antinomian in the sight of ,god1 is one who holds the truth in unrighteousness1 who has ,gospel notions in his head but no grace in his heart3 he is one that makes a profession of ,christ ,jesus1 but was never purged by his blood1 renewed by his spirit1 nor saved by his power4 ,with him carnal ease passes for ,gospel peace2 a natural assent of the mind for faith2 insensibility for liberty2 and daring presumption for the grace of assurance4 ,he is alive without the law1 the sentence of the moral law having never been sent home to him4 ,the law of faith was never sealed on him2 the law of truth was never received by him2 nor the law of liberty proclaimed to him4--,he was never arraigned at1 nor taken from1 the throne of judgment--,he was never justified at the throne of grace1 nor acquitted at the bar of equity4--,the tremendous attribute of righteousness was never seen or felt by him2 the righteousness of the law was never fulfilled in him2 the righteousness of the law was never fulfilled by him2 the righteousness of faith was never imputed to him2 nor the fruits of righteousness brought forth by him4 ,he is an enemy to the power of ,god1 to the experience of the just and to every minister of the spirit2 and is in union with none but hypocrites1 whose uniting ties are the gall of bitterness and the bonds of iniquity4 ,he is one that often changes his opinions1 but was never changed in heart2 he turns to many sects and parties1 but never turns to ,god4 ,in word he is false to ,satan1 in heart he is false to ,god3 false to ,satan by uttering truth1 and false to ,god by a false profession4 ,he is a false reprover in the world1 and in the household of faith a false brother4 ,he is a child of ,satan in the congregation of dissemblers1 and a bastard in the congregation of the righteous4 ,by mouth he contends for a covenant that cannot save him1 and in heart he hates the covenant that can4 ,his head is at mount ,calvary1 his heart and soul at mount ,sinia4 ,he is a pharisee at ,horeb1 and a hypocrite in ,zion2 he is a transgressor of the law of works1 and a rebel to the law of faith2 a sinner by the ministry of the letter1 and an unbeliever by the ministry of the spirit4 ,as a wicked servant he is cursed by the eternal law2 and as an infidel he is damned by the everlasting gospel3 and this is a real antinomian in the sight of ,god4 8,the ,apostle of old was charged with saying let us do evil that good may come30 this he calls a slanderous report invented and circulated by those preachers and people who are all zealous for that law which forbids their lies4 8,thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour40 ,i thought it necessary to discuss this point1 to contradict the fiery flying serpents of infamous lies1 that many holy kind of people have industriously circulated with great care1 pains1 and expence2 is not the accusation of worldly men1 which they bring against professors too true8 they will not swear it is true1 but they will lie4 ,the doctrines the ,lord has taught me he has blessed with power to many souls2 the change has been seen1 nor could it be denied they have been read of others4 ,the world has seen the glorious effects of sovereign grace2 the church has admired and blessed ,god for it2 angels have united in the joy4 ,these letters have been read by ministers who have been obliged to acknowledge them genuine1 even the writing of ,god's ,spirit2 and in fact1 none can read the hand writing on the wall of the heart1 but spiritual ,daniels2 others see the effect only in the outward conduct1 but these see the work itself4 8,great is the work1 my neighbours cried1 ,and owned the power divine1 ,great is the work1 my heart replied1 ,but be the glory thine40 ,these letters will be read1 in the last great day2--they will appear in his image2--awake up in his likeness1 and be satisfied with his smiles4 ,the image in which the person dies1 he will rise in at the last great day1--whether the image of ,god or ,satan2 thousands will rise in the image of the devil1 just as they died in a state of enmity against the ,most ,high ,god2--these are the rest of the dead that lived not again till the thousand years are expired1 then ,satan and all the wicked will be released from their prison2 come upon the breadth of the earth2--compass the beloved city1 and foolishly suppose they can take possession of it4 ,satan who begun this work by deceiving1 will end it in deceiving1 and this will be the last act of his deception2 the image of the devil will be found on all his children2 an image ,god hates1 will reject and punish but those who bear the image of the heavenly ,adam2 those who love this image1 will be seen1 known1 and acknowledged2--the adorable ,father will acknowledge the object of his choice1 the ,saviour2--the purchase of his own blood1 the holy spirit2--the work of his own hand1 the ministers of the gospel will see and rejoice in the characters they were useful to1 the whole election of grace will be received with the joyful welcome1 8,come ye blessed20 the ungodly will see them exalted1 and be obliged to say1 8,oh we fools30--counted their life madness1 and their end without honour4 ,but now they are numbered with the saints1 and their lot is with the children of ,god2 thus they will be known and read of all men4 ,amen4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,finis4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,postscript4 ,,the ,author begs leave inform the ,religious ,public1 that he is happy he has an opportunity of contradicting the 7,ipswich tidings7 lately published in a scurrilous ,pamphlet3 as three respectable persons waited on the ,accuser1 and he promptly denied what had been published and widely insinuated4 ,shortly after1 three other ,gentlemen went to ,ipswich1 but could not see him1 only1 they were allowed to converse with him1 through the medium of his ,father1 who shewed him what had been printed2 and his last confession before the three last witnesses3 when he ,,declared that he knew nothing of the ,,former1 but that his ,,last confession was the ,,truth4 ,the ,author laments that his former friends should be so imposed upon1--that so much discord1 and a separation should take place1 through artful and malicious characters1 merely to gain an end4 ,but such have their reward4 ,likewise it is necessary to declare1 that the ,gentlemen1 before whom the former confession was made1 were
