also they have in many instances shown the wisdom of giving generously during life4 ,the recent death of ,mr4 ,lewis ,s4 ,swezey1 of ,rockford1 ,ill41 gives emphasis to these thoughts4 ,he helped organize the ,liberty ,party1 and was one of a few who first voted in the town of ,rockford for ,birney for ,president4 ,though his whole estate did not amount to more than #aj1jjj1 he gave to the ,association a one thousand dollar bond in #ahhe1 and another amounting to seven hundred and fourteen dollars in #ahhf4 ,at his death he left the ,association a life policy of #b1jjj1 and #ejj in his will4 ,he made the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 his residuary legatee1 from which our treasury will probably realize about #e1jjj4 ,his sympathy for the colored people may be seen in the fact that one of the last acts of his life was to give a poor old colored woman in ,rockford a hundred dollars to repair her house4 ,when dying he said to his wife1 8,this seems like crossing the river10 and in response to the question1 8,how does it look on the other side80 replied1 8,very bright1 very bright40 ,and no wonder4 ,he had laid up his treasures where neither moth nor rust corrupt1 and where thieves do not break through nor steal4 ,money given to the ,lord during life is followed with no regrets at the dying hour4 ,were ,christians thoroughly possessed of the conviction that such work as the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is doing must be prosecuted and sustained as a religious duty1 we believe their offerings would be far more generous than they are4 ,a sense of duty as expressed in their gifts would be accompanied by a ,boston1 ,rev4 ,david ,gregg1 in his first sermon after installation1 discussed the duties of the ,pulpit and the ,pews4 ,one who heard it said at the close1 8,well1 that was a sermon that would please the secretaries of our benevolent societies as well as the rest of us40 ,depend on it1 that any sermon of which such testimony can be borne has two things characteristic of it3 ,one is1 it must be a gospel sermon1 and another is1 it must be interesting4 ,it has been our privilege to read the sermon as reported in the ,boston daily papers4 ,it fills the bill4 ,it is full of the gospel1 and a thrill of interest runs all the way through it4 ,speaking for the ,secretaries of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 we can say they are pleased1 intensely so4 ,here are two brief extracts that sufficiently justify their pleasure3 8,is it the duty of ,park ,street pulpit to accept the service and co-operation of the ,park ,street pews8 ,the pulpit here and now solemnly performs its duty1 and declares its promise you to be the most liberal man in the world in dealing out your money from your pocket-books1 and in accepting and in giving away your time4 ,i am willing that every righteous and needy cause ,because our lot has been cast in them1 they have a claim upon us1 and their voice should be heard4 ,our age is an age telling of ages1 and it commands us to meet the duties of the hour4 ,no relations in life ought to be more helpful for this than our church relations4 ,there is no place for medival fossils outside of a museum4 ,the demand of the hour is for living men and living women4 ,our age is a pivotal age1 a cardinal age1 a burning age1 a crucial age4 ,let us not forget that we are living under the westering sun of the #aith century1 and that this lays us under obligations to be #aith century ,christians4 8,while we forget not the age1 we must not forget the land in which we live1 and which expects an outcome of good from our church relations4 ,america is the land where the battles of the future are destined to be fought4 ,in push of discovery and of civilization there is no land beyond this4 ,the fields of ,america are the outer rim of the earth1 and here the nations of the world1 crowded out of the old lands1 meet1 and here all the great problems and questions of ages must be debated and settled4 ,our land cries for help1 and we can help it4 ,we can give it the gospel of ,jesus ,christ and that is what it needs above all things4 ,the gospel alone carries in it the principles which can solve with safety and finality the social and political questions which are coming to ,america to stay40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,by ,,treaty ,,stipulations the ,chinese in this country are guaranteed the same rights and privileges as are accorded the most favored nations4 ,one ,thomas ,baldwin was arrested by a ,united ,states ,marshal for driving out with force and violence a number of ,chinese residents from the town of ,nicolaus1 ,california4 ,the circuit court refused to discharge him upon a writ of habeas corpus4 ,an appeal was taken to the ,united ,states ,supreme ,court4 ,the ,supreme ,court looked the matter through and found that while the ,united ,states ,government has the power to provide for the punishment of those who deprive the ,chinese of their treaty rights1 there is no statute law by which it can exercise its power6 ,the decision of the circuit court was therefore reversed4 ,justices ,field and ,harlan dissented4 ,in a separate opinion1 ,justice ,field held that if the ,chinese could not be protected in their treaty rights1 neither could the subjects or citizens of any other nation4 ,this is a beautiful attitude for the great ,united ,states to be placed in before the eyes of the world4 ,making treaties when it has not power to compel its own citizens to observe them6 ,what a farce4 ,is it to be supposed that if this were understood nations would go to the trouble of making treaties with us8 ,were the questions at issue about the ,chinese raised in regard to subjects of ,great ,britain or ,germany or any of the first or even second-class powers of ,europe1 is it to be supposed that any such a decision would have been formulated and promulgated by our ,supreme ,court8 ,we do not question the ability nor the integrity of our justices4 ,the probability is that in the strict construction of the law they are right4 ,but even judges1 when put to it1 can sometimes find such latitude in the field of interpretation as to warrant them in setting aside mere technicalities rather than to allow justice to be defeated4 ,that such eminent jurists as ,field and ,harlan found interpretations that justified them in dissenting2 that the circuit court in ,california found reasons for refusing to release ,baldwin from custody1 would certainly indicate that the decision is fairly challengeable4 ,it is a national humiliation4 ,it ought to be so felt by the people4 ,it would be so felt if regard for right and justice were supreme in the national heart and conscience4 ,it is to be hoped that this matter will be brought by the proper authority1 as soon as practicable1 to the attention of ,congress1 and that the ,united ,states ,government will speedily be clothed with statutory power to enforce its own treaties4 ,if this decision shall have the effect of getting us out of the painful predicament that it reveals our ,government to be in1 we may reluctantly accept it as a means of grace4 ,meanwhile even ,china is on record as being far more ,christian in her treatment of our people than ,christian ,america is in its treatment of hers4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,money ,,compensation is a very poor return as an offset to outrage4 ,congress passed the bill appropriating #adg1gej to indemnify the ,chinese sufferers from the ,rock ,springs riots4 ,hon4 ,wm4 ,walter ,phelps1 representative from ,new ,jersey1 spoke words upon its passage for which every ,christian in the country must feel grateful4 ,said he3 8,i want to pay this amount because the ,chinese ,government asked for that sum4 ,the sum represents only the property destroyed4 ,the ,chinese ,government knows that our ,government never likes to pay a claim in full1 so it wisely presents its bill only for the property destroyed1 and says nothing of #bh men murdered--nothing of #ae men wounded--nothing of #gjj ,chinese hunted for ten days with club and rifle like rabbits1 until they were dispersed into the wilderness and their village was made an ash heap4 8,in the time when ,great ,britain was at war with ,china1 an ,american citizen named ,edwards was arrested by mistake as an ,englishman1 imprisoned from sunrise to sunset1 and then released4 ,the ,chinese ,government paid #ca1fjj for the injury done to his person and to the dignity of the ,united ,states4 ,there were #gjj ,chinese who suffered at ,rock ,springs--all of them more than this man4 ,we hesitate to pay them #bjj each4 ,recall the familiar story of heathen generosity--how ,china once gave us #gjj1jjj and said3 #8,take it and pay the claims of your citizens4' ,we took it2 we paid the claims with twelve per cent4 interest1 and there was enough left to return #bjj1jjj to the ,chinese ,government4 8,if this seems ancient history1 long after the ,rock ,springs massacre there was a riot in ,ching ,king4 ,the rabble destroyed property belonging to the ,american ,methodist ,missionary ,society4 ,the ,chinese ,government has already paid #be1jjj for these losses2 and also1 since our discussion on this bill1 a riot1 under similar circumstances1 at ,shanghai1 destroyed other missionary property4 ,the ,chinese ,government has paid this bill too1 #e1jjj4 8,i have no heart to speak of the obligations founded in the international law4 ,i don't want even to refer to the treaty1 where we pledged ourselves to exert all our powers to devise measures for the protection of ,chinese subjects in this country4 ,it is not on the ground of legal1 but of the moral obligations that ,i prefer to rest this claim40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,treatment of the ,indians is very much like the way a kindly parent allows his judgment to be at the mercy of the pranks of his mischievous boy4 ,the boy takes a stick1 and chasing a dog1 pokes it and pounds it till the maddened brute turns upon his tormentor and bites him4 ,this enrages the father1 who forthwith takes his gun and shoots the dog4 ,in strict justice he ought to have taken the stick and applied it to the back of the boy4 ,the good man had no ill will whatever toward the dog1 nor would he ever have thought of shooting it had the poor brute been let alone and not tantalized into biting the boy4 ,but the dog having been enraged so as to become dangerous1 there was nothing left but to destroy it4 ,white men--some of them not even citizens of the ,united ,states--in violation of law enter the ,indian reservation1 steal the ,indians' ponies1 drive off their cattle1 shoot down a few of the ,indians for resisting them1 or perhaps for the mere fun of the thing4 ,the ,indians1 maddened by the wrongs inflicted upon them1 go on the war-path4 ,the savage stirred with anger strikes back1 and the innocent with the guilty--if indeed the guilty do not go scot free--are made to suffer4 ,had the ,indian been let alone he would have remained peaceful and quiet and friendly4 ,but by desperadoes he has been maddened to go on the war-path in vengeance1 to retaliate for wrongs he has suffered4 ,then follow the blood-curdling stories of ambuscade and massacre4 ,popular indignation is roused4 ,extermination of the ,indian is demanded4 ,there is nothing left now for ,uncle ,sam to do but to send his army and put the ,indian down4 ,a pity that the chastisement cannot be inflicted on those whose wickedness started the mischief4 ,,bishop ,,whipple bears the following testimony to the good effect of making the ,indians feel the responsibility of individual distinctive effort for themselves by vesting them with individual rights of property and by compelling them to live by their own labor3 8,twenty years ago we began with a small number of ,indians at ,white ,earth ,reservation4 ,they were wild folk1 used only to savage life4 ,now there are #a1hjj people living like civilized beings4 ,they have houses built by themselves4 ,they are self-supporting4 ,it is an orderly1 law-abiding1 peaceful community4 ,in religion they are about equally divided between the ,episcopalian and ,catholic churches4 ,the laws are administered by an ,indian police4 ,this year they raised #dj1jjj bushels of wheat and #cj1jjj bushels of oats4 ,they have a herd of #a1bjj or #a1ejj cattle1 several hundred horses1 swine1 sheep and fowls4 ,they are proud of their homes and of living in them like white people4 ,they are as neat and orderly as old-fashioned ,dutch housekeepers4 ,they are excellent cooks1 too2 they never need to be shown twice how to cook anything4 ,their sewing is the most beautiful ,i ever saw2 it is impossible to see the stitches4 ,they have made all the carpets and bedding ,i have in my house4 ,the contrast1 therefore1 between these ,white ,earth people and the scattered bands of ,chippewas shows plainly what can be accomplished with them by adopting right methods4 ,the latter are utterly degraded40 99 99 99 99 99 ,in the ,february ,,missionary we commented on the causes which had led the ,executive ,committee of the ,freedmen's ,aid ,society of the ,methodist ,episcopal ,church to direct the ,trustees of the ,chattanooga ,university to ask ,professor ,caulkins for his resignation4 ,this the ,trustees refused to do1 and1 in view of a current expectation that colored students would again seek admission1 they have passed a series of 8whereases0 affirming that the ,university was designed for white pupils1 and not intended to be a mixed school2 that well-equipped schools for colored pupils were easily accessible2 that to admit colored students would injure the school1 defeat the object for which it was established1 alienate the races and prove especially detrimental to the interests of the colored people2 that the ,general ,conference had declared the question of mixed schools to be one of expediency 8to be left to the choice and administration of those on the ground1 and more immediately concerned10 and then wound up with a resolution declaring that they deemed it inexpedient to admit colored students to the ,university1 and instructed the ,faculty to administer accordingly4 ,such action on the part of the trustees could not be permitted to pass unnoticed4 ,the ,executive ,committee of the ,freedmen's ,aid ,society called a meeting of the ,board of ,managers1 and submitted for consideration the above-noted 8whereases0 and 8resolution40 ,the whole subject received full consideration4 ,we have not space to publish the report in full1 but it is all summed up in the last resolution1 as follows3 8,resolved1 ,that if the ,chattanooga ,university fail to secure the resignation of ,prof4 ,wilford ,caulkins1 to take effect at a date not later than the close of the present school term1 and to so modify its action as not to exclude from instruction in that institution students on account of race or color2 i4 e41 if the said university fail in either of these particulars1 we hereby instruct our ,executive ,committee to secure1 by agreement1 if possible1 with the ,trustees of said ,university1 the immediate termination of the contract between the ,chattanooga ,university and the ,freedmen's ,aid ,society2 and1 in case a termination of said contract be not secured by mutual agreement1 in either of the contingencies named above1 to notify the ,trustees of the ,chattanooga ,university1 within sixty days from this #bdth day of ,february1 #ahhg1 of the termination of the contract as provided in the same40 ,this brings matters to an issue4 ,we congratulate the ,board of ,managers of the ,freedmen's ,aid ,society upon the stand taken4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,writes a teacher in ,georgia3 8,with the close of #ahhf many left our school1 some to teach in the public schools and others to ,state who have bought land since the war1 and who are steadily collecting about them the comforts and many of the luxuries of life4 ,comparatively few of the colored people entertain decided notions of economy or have any faith in ,government savings banks1 but the wealth they have hidden away in old stockings and the money they are investing from year to year in lands and houses1 if it could be ,it was certainly a most remarkable demonstration4 ,and why all this8 ,because he had worked himself into the popular thought as the faithful champion of reforms and measures that touched the popular heart4 ,his pulpit power1 as an orator1 made ,brooklyn famous the world over4 ,his splendid victory in turning the tide of ,british opinion on the side of the ,union as against secession by his marvelous speeches in ,england1 challenged and won the admiration of his countrymen who were loyal to the integrity of the republic4 ,but what more than anything else created an affection that his death has resurrected1 and that will make his name famous so long as its memory remains1 was his fearless and uncompromising ,abolitionism4 ,plymouth pulpit was a battery whose shot and shell made continuous breaches in the defenses of slavery during the days preceding the great conflict1 and when the conflict came1 it was heard as a voice in trumpet tones calling the people to battle and steadying them in courage and determination4 ,the preacher saw with prophetic eye not only the preservation of the ,union as the issue1 but the emancipation and enfranchisement of the slaves4 ,mr4 ,beecher was1 therefore1 always the friend of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,for eleven years he was one of its vice-presidents4 ,at ,lawrence1 ,mass41 in #ahgj1 he preached its annual sermon4 ,its representatives have always been welcome to his pulpit1 and its work has always been sustained by the contributions of his people4 ,it was fitting that the same man who had been the undertaker for ,john ,brown and ,owen ,lovejoy should perform the same service1 as he did1 for ,mr4 ,beecher4 ,it was fitting that a ,virginia ,confederate general and former slave-holder1 and a ,massachusetts colored commander of the ,william ,lloyd ,garrison ,post of the ,grand ,army of the ,republic1 should march arm in arm1 as they did1 at the head of the procession when the body was carried to ,plymouth ,church under escort of the #acth ,n4 ,y4 ,regiment1 of which ,mr4 ,beecher was the chaplain4 ,it was fitting that the last letter ,mr4 ,beecher wrote1 and which he left unfinished1 should be1 as it is1 about a colored man and the word of ,god4 ,and it is fitting that ,,the ,,american ,,missionary should join1 as it does1 with the tens of thousands who testify to the wonderful power1 the marvelous achievements1 the great value of the varied ministrations of this justly distinguished and remarkable man1 and who thank ,god that the transcendent wealth of his great mind1 and tender1 sympathetic heart was consecrated to the service of the loving ,father1 who bestowed it1 in behalf of liberty1 justice1 equity and right4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,negro ,,on ,,the ,,negro4 ,the ,new ,york ,independent1 always on the alert for information concerning the colored people1 and fearless in its championship of those people's rights1 has published under the above caption seven most interesting articles4 ,a circular was sent to two hundred representative intelligent colored men and women in the several ,southern ,states1 8to ascertain the prevailing opinions and feelings of the colored people themselves about the relation of the races and the outlook of the colored race40 ,the seventh article1 which is a summary of the answers received1 we take great pleasure in publishing3 8,material ,prosperity and ,ambition of the ,negro4--,there is a practically unanimous opinion 7the dissenting opinions coming from a few communities which have abnormal hindrances7 that the colored people are becoming home owners with great rapidity4 ,the proportion of families who own their own homes is variously estimated1 and no estimate is trustworthy for statistical uses4 ,but all the correspondents report an ambition to accumulate property1 and the accumulation of more and more every year4 ,the great mass of the blacks are not real estate owners4 ,the great mass of black families are yet tenants2 but the progress making in the acquisition of land seems to be satisfactory4 ,in most ,southern communities1 land is yet very cheap1 and the mere ownership of land does not argue material prosperity to any great extent2 but the ownership of homes does argue a social advancement that is exceedingly significant4 ,there is reported from some communities a lingering opposition by the whites to the disposition of land to ,negroes4 ,but this has had the natural effect to make the ,negroes the more ambitious to become land-owners4 ,in most communities this opposition seems to have disappeared1 or at least to have taken the modified shape of opposition to the ,negroes' acquisition of the most desirable land for residences4 ,the race is indisputably laying the foundation for all healthful progress4 ,the ,system of ,wages1 ,credit1 etc4 ,there is very general complaint of the credit system which prevails in most ,southern communities4 ,the most grievous shape this takes is the payment of wages in supplies1 whereby an oppressive interest is exacted1 and by the nature of the system generally made necessary4 ,by such a system the thrifty are taxed to make up for the thriftlessness of the rest4 ,it is at this point1 in fact1 that the industrial servitude which yet lingers as a relic of slavery obtrudes itself most oppressively4 ,the abolition of this system is necessary for the material advancement of the ,south--of both races alike2 necessary for the elevation of the laborer and for the promotion of his efficiency2 necessary as a corollary to the ,emancipation ,proclamation2 and necessary as a means of freeing the whole system of ,southern labor 7the employer as well as the employee7 from inefficiency4 ,no conceivable amount of extraneous capital invested in the ,south would so add to material prosperity as the abolition of the credit and supply system4 ,the labor problem there is to effect this emancipation4 ,as for wages1 they are low1 but their lowness is not itself a cause of distress4 ,it is the system which keeps them low and keeps labor inefficient and taxes thrift and skill1 and puts a premium on thriftlessness and untrustworthiness1 that does the damage4 ,the gist of the whole problem is here4 ,the ,races and the ,laws4--,the statutes of the ,southern ,states are not a matter of complaint1 except the bastardy and marriage laws2 but there is a very general opinion that in the execution of the law1 race prejudice appears4 ,one correspondent lays great stress on a fact which several others mention1 that many ignorant blacks often fancy that they are the victims of injustice when they are not4 ,the opinion of the colored practitioners of law is practically unanimous that a ,negro tried for certain crimes is more likely to be convicted than a white man for the same crimes1 and likely to pay a heavier penalty where the penalty is discretionary with the court or jury4 ,the marriage and bastardy laws of several ,southern ,states at least concentrate the pressure to crime at the weakest social point1 and do not give the ,negro woman a fair chance1 nor the same protection or reparation that the white woman has4 ,schools and ,churches4--,in the answers to the inquiry whether the ,negroes themselves prefer separate or mixed schools and churches1 a peculiar state of feeling was made plain in this regard--that 8union0 or 8mixed0 schools were opposed by the colored teachers because the white teachers would then have a monopoly of the business of teaching4 ,this implies a belief that the ,southern whites would teach ,negro schools if it were made profitable4 ,the dominant sentiment of the colored people is decidedly in favor of the present system of separate schools and churches2 but they prefer them because mixed schools and churches would emphasize and provoke the race prejudice4 ,as an independent question1 apart from the difficulty of readjusting a plan now almost universally adopted1 they would prefer mixed schools and union churches4 ,the most intelligent of these correspondents1 even as things are1 favor mixed congregations and schools as a means of eradicating race prejudice4 ,it is worthy of notice that several correspondents declare that the separation of the congregations of the same creed on the color line has had much to do toward causing the blacks to doubt the sincerity of the religion of those who1 though they teach that their religion is universal in its application1 allow it to yield to race feeling4 ,this is a significant confession for colored men to make2 and it is worthy of the attention of the ,southern churches4 8,civil ,rights40--,there is a unanimous protest in these letters against the discrimination made between the races on public thoroughfares1 and at places of amusement4 ,the desire of the colored people for the obliteration of the color-line in these places seems to be universal and is strong4 ,the ,most ,pressing ,need4--,in answer to the inquiry1 8,what is the greatest hindrance1 and the most pressing need of the race80 the ,negro's appreciation of instruction1 and his ambition to be educated1 were forcibly expressed4 8,education is the greatest need10 is the answer in substance of every correspondent4 ,in the replies it was made plain that the race is prepared for an important prohibition movement4 ,drink is thought to be the greatest hindrance by a large number of the colored lawyers and teachers1 as well as preachers4 ,this points to a probably early agitation of prohibition over a wide ,southern area4 ,the colored man himself appreciates1 too1 the necessity of practical instruction1 instruction in the trades4 ,morality and the ,mixture of ,races4--,a general moral improvement is what the ,negro himself believes his race is making2 and this belief is in itself strong evidence that this judgment is sound4 ,but the dominant opinion is that the black race is already perceptibly disappearing4 ,colored men are everywhere reported to prefer light-colored women4 ,there is a race pride on the ,negro's side as well as on the white man's against intermarriage4 ,but the ,negro has1 nevertheless1 reached the conclusion1 if these letters are representative of the race's opinion1 as they are believed to be1 that the pure ,african will become rare in a very few generations1 and that he is doomed to extinction4 ,it remains to be said that the letters which have been received in answer to these inquiries show not a little mature thought4 ,they show1 too1 a profound interest in all phases of the subject4 ,the ,negro is at least seriously thinking over the problems that his presence presents4 ,many of these correspondents have expressed great interest in this investigation1 and have put themselves to no little trouble to make it full and fair4 ,the sincerity and frankness of these letters have spoken for themselves4 ,a deep moral purpose pervades most of them that is impressive4 ,they emphasize the conviction that the race is making an heroic struggle1 according to its opportunities for advancement4 ,that the ,negro is true to his race1 moreover1 is a fact of some importance4 ,the educated are working to educate the rest4 ,it is noteworthy1 moreover1 that out of all the answers received only two displayed bitterness of race feeling4 ,the ,negro's temper1 as shown in this correspondence1 is the temper of a patient1 charitable worker for a great purpose4 ,and1 above all1 the ,negro has faith in the ,negro4 ,it has not occurred to a scattered through the book1 but often sadly marred by omission1 alteration or addition4 ,some of the original effusions are ludicrous in the extreme4 ,the poet shows his estimate of education as he describes the ,christians of old3 ,small learning they had1 and wanted no more2 ,not many could read1 but all could adore4 ,no help from the college or school they received1 ,content with his knowledge in whom they believed4 ,calvinism has to take it hot and heavy4 ,the sweet singer lets sweetness take a vacation1 while he pours forth his wrath in song3 ,there is a reprobated plan1 ,say poet drooped as he essayed this loftiest of flights4 ,we are thankful1 however1 that he did let the ,indian come in for a part in the hallelujah4 ,the war-whoop would not at all be out of harmony in his kind of a hallelujah chorus6 ,that this 8sweet singer in ,israel0 ,d4,d4 should make some of his songs take on the form of ,scripture exposition is what we might expect1 as witness3 ,there was a man in ancient times1 ,the ,scriptures doth inform us1 ,whose pomp and grandeur and whose crimes ,were great and very numerous4 ,the man fared sumptuously each day ,in purple and fine linen2 ,he ate above are samples of versification that we have selected from this ,sweet ,songster1 that our readers may see for themselves the kind of ,christian instruction some white people in certain portions of our country receive4 ,these selections are certainly ludicrous1 yet they have also a serious aspect--they point to duty4 ,it would be useless to denounce such incompetent leadership as is here revealed4 ,it would be folly to argue either with the leaders or the people whom they lead4 ,we must plant schools and educate the children4 ,preach the ,gospel in its simplicity1 and let the people hear the truth4 ,the light will destroy the darkness4 ,it will reveal the deformity and ugliness of error4 ,it will rebuke the assumptions of ignorance4 ,it will lead the people in their soul-hunger to turn away from husks and to demand that in song and sermon their poets and preachers shall give them the bread of life or else keep silent4 ,there is a wide field here to be cultivated4 ,it lies open before us4 ,we have entered it4 ,rich has been our harvesting so far as we have gone4 ,earnest and numerous are the invitations that come to us for more workers and enlarged efforts4 ,these wages of a working man in that region is not above ten dollars a month1 and that the average colored family is not fashionably small1 the purchase of this real estate proves that they have carefully 8boom0 in real estate1 but an actual increase in the accumulations of the colored citizens of this flourishing and beautiful ,southern city4 ,the colored people have been given a fair chance in ,thomasville1 and this is the use they have made of it4 ,the readers of this magazine will remember the generous gift of ,judge ,h4 ,w4 ,hopkins1 ,mayor of ,thomasville1 of a beautiful site for buildings of the ,conn4 ,industrial ,school4 ,a fine building has been erected upon this site and in a few weeks it will be ready for occupancy4 ,there is intense interest in the community and surrounding neighborhood in this new school4 ,it will doubtless be crowded as soon as opened4 ,it is to be an industrial school for girls4 8,far removed from arts sthetic1 ,crewel-work and peacock fans1 ,are the studies dietetic ,carried on mid pots and pans40 99 99 99 99 99 ,a trustworthy friend overheard the following remark1 made by a lawyer in the office of a ,southern hotel3 8,i have seen a miracle to-day10 said this lawyer4 8,i have actually seen a white man convicted of murder and sentenced to be hanged for killing a nigger4 ,i never expected to witness such a thing in this ,state40 ,what a fearful comment on the injustice of these courts of justice in the past6 ,what horrible suggestiveness of unpunished crimes6 ,but there is in it1 too1 hopefulness for the future4 99 99 99 99 99 ,at ,lewis ,normal ,institute1 ,macon1 and at ,storrs ,school1 in ,atlanta1 the number of pupils is limited only by the capacity of the school-rooms to hold them4 ,in ,macon1 ,bro4 ,wharton1 whom ,i left in ,savannah1 when ,i pushed southward into ,florida1 was holding special services under the direction of the pastor4 ,god's spirit was blessing his efforts and many were daily seeking the way of life4 ,it has been a year of great religious awakening throughout our entire field4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a beautiful gold locket was put into my hands by an earnest ,christian woman1 a very saint of so many been reached and been led to enter upon the better life4 ,the special interest began during the week of prayer which was observed by holding a meeting each evening1 and a spirit of inquiry was early manifested and a goodly number promptly confessed ,christ as their ,saviour4 ,much personal work was done by teachers and older pupils and many who had been negligent and careless1 made confession and renewed their covenant4 ,short meetings were continued for a few days longer1 and the seed-sowing and the harvest went on together1 and every day some gain was made1 and one after another came to a decision1 until nearly all the students in the family and many of the day pupils were deeply interested1 while some who had withstood many good influences for a long time yielded to to some of us1 while in ,hartford ,theological ,seminary1 more than fifteen years ago1 by a missionary from ,africa1 and he gave us some illustrations to prove his point4 ,i was forcibly reminded of this a few weeks ago as we elected two ,indians to serve as deacons1 the first ,indians ever chosen to fill that place in the history of this church1 for during the first eleven years of its existence there have been white men connected with it who have filled that office acceptably4 ,some time ago1 however1 the last one left us1 and after waiting a while in vain to see if some other men would not come1 who would serve in this capacity1 we decided that it was best to choose ,indians for the place4 ,one of these has had a remarkable history4 ,about thirty years ago or more he was baptized a ,catholic1 but when1 after a short stay1 the ,catholic priest left these ,indians1 not to return again1 he1 with the rest of these ,indians1 relapsed to their heathenish ways4 ,twelve years ago he was noted for drinking and for the sly ways in which he could procure his liquor4 ,in #ahgf he had great trouble with his wife and wished to leave her1 but the ,agent would not allow it4 ,a long trouble followed1 in which the ,agent and prominent ,indians tried every way they could think of to make them live peaceably together4 ,one day the ,agent with two friendly ,indians went to arrest him1 but1 with the help of his uncle1 he knocked down the ,agent1 broke out a window and got away4 ,he was pursued all day1 but was not taken1 and at night was helped off by his relations1 and he ran a long way off4 ,for this his relations were locked up in jail1 which brought them to terms1 and they induced him to return so that they could be let out1 and he served six months in jail4 ,after that he secretly left his wife1 took another1 and went to another reservation1 sixty miles distant1 but in time1 with the help of another ,agent and two soldiers1 he was again taken and conveyed to ,fort ,townsend1 where he worked six months more1 with a soldier and bayonet to compel him to do so4 ,a year or two afterwards he returned to ,skokomish4 ,he said that he had reformed1 but was still a ,catholic1 and he held some ,catholic services at his own house4 ,for a year or two1 however1 they did not amount to much1 as hardly anybody attended them4 ,in #ahha affairs changed1 and through the death of a prominent ,indian1 the ,catholics became quite strong1 mingling with their teachings spiritualistic revelations from the dying man1 and he was their priest4 ,the next year another ,indian professed to die1 receive revelations1 and come to life again1 and he originated a religion which was composed of ,protestantism1 ,catholicism1 spiritualism1 the old ,indian religion1 and a nervous twitching1 similar to the jerks prevalent in the ,southern and ,western ,states fifty years ago1 and which gained for them the name of ,shakers4 ,for a few months they carried things with a high hand1 and he was an acknowledged leader4 ,the ,catholic religion1 however1 grew to be a very small part of their services1 while the shaking grew to be very large1 so that their heads and hands were sometimes shaking night after night1 six hours at a time4 ,to save them from becoming crazy1 with the advice of the physician1 the ,agent put a stop to this1 but told them they might continue their
