failures4 ,having seen in the ,western  

,states a great many ephemeral          
newspapers1 which ran their course      
briefly and then vanished away1 ,i am   
prepared to say that the percentage of  
newspaper failures is no greater among  
the negroes than the whites4 ,newspapers
 are very frail and mortal creatures1   
and to many of them it is appointed to  
die4 ,few of them can lay claim to      
immortality2 like the human race1 most  
of them die in infancy4 ,yet there are  
now more than fifty papers published by 
colored men1 mostly in the ,southern    
,states4 ,the ,state of ,georgia has    
five2 ,north ,carolina has seven4 ,as   
the general intelligence of the people  
increases1 the usefulness of these      
papers also enlarges4 ,there is a good  
deal of race pride among the colored    
people1 and they greatly enjoy the      
achievements of their race1 whether in  
the field of journalism or elsewhere4   
,of course they are not trained to      
habits of close criticism and literary  
discrimination4 ,like all whose         

education has not been very extensive1  
they delight in high-sounding phrases   
and long1 sonorous words4 ,most of their
 editorials are somewhat open to        
criticism in this line1 yet there are   
not a few examples of crisp1 clear1     
terse1 vigorous ,english which are      
refreshing to read in these pedantic    
days4  ,as a general thing these papers 
are edited by the younger generation of 
men1 graduates from the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4     
colleges or elsewhere4 ,no others have  
sufficient ability or perseverance to   
make a success in this line4 ,they are  
mostly ,christian men1 and they print   
many articles upon temperance and other 
practical virtues1 which are sadly      
needed here both among black and white4 
,so these papers exert a widespread and 
generally beneficial influence1 going   
into many homes that have no other      
reading4 ,like his white brother1 the   
negro sometimes forgets to 8pay the     
printer10 and hence there is an         
occasional suspension for lack of funds4

 ,so there is in the ,north as well4    
,more and more1 as they increase in     
knowledge and in property1 there will be
 a greater demand for good newspapers4  
,the schools and colleges of the ,a4 ,m4
 ,a4 are calculated to have a wide      
influence in this field1 training up    
writers and thinkers who shall through  
their periodicals exert a great deal of 
power4 ,besides preaching and teaching1 
there is to be in the future of the     
,anglo-,african a vast field of         
usefulness in journalism4 ,the power of 
thinking1 and of putting thought into   
effective words1 is to be more and more 
developed in these schools4 ,here then  
is a new argument for the thorough and  
adequate maintenance of the church and  
school work1 to raise up men and women  
from among this patient race who shall  
prove1 even as many of them are proving 
now1 that 8the pen is mightier than the 
sword40 ,the occasional crudity of      
expression1 the extravagant adjective   
and preposterous grammar1 must and will 

give place to true thinking and correct 
expression1 under the steady polishing  
and mental training of our schools4     
,fresh vigor1 greater power1 wider and

the old-world sense of the term1 is an  
institution where all the branches of   
the higher education are taught1 and    
these alone4 ,in our country the name is
 often adopted by institutions as a     
prophecy of what they hope to become1   
while their present work is almost      
wholly that of elementary instruction--a
 work which they expect eventually to   
outgrow4  ,so far as the institutions of
 the ,american ,missionary ,association 
are concerned1 ,i am inclined to think  

that there is a nobler ideal to be      
realized under the name of university   
than any feeble imitation of older      
institutions4 ,a field is open here in  
the ,south for the development of an    
institution such as the world has not   
yet seen1 and which1 in a somewhat new  
but not unnatural sense1 would justify  
its claim to be called a university4    
,the university which missionary effort 
can make most useful in the ,south is   
one that shall represent1 in their most 
perfect form1 all the successive grades 
of education from lowest to highest4 ,it
 should be prepared to train ordinary   
pupils of all ages rather than          
extraordinary ones of mature age only4  
,it should also provide ample facilities
 for normal and industrial training1 now
 so much needed in all the ,south4 ,but 
especially it should magnify and dignify
 the work of primary instruction1       
regarding this as a permanent feature of
 its work1 and not as an unavoidable    
evil to be shaken off as soon as        

possible4 ,it should neither undervalue 
nor neglect the higher education4 ,this 
should be held up as a worthy object of 
aspiration for all who show themselves  
fitted to receive it1 by thorough work  
lower down4 ,such an institution would  
present1 under one management1 a        
kindergarten1 or something like it1 a   
graded school1 a normal school1 an      
industrial department1 an academy1 a    
college1 and in course of time the      
professional schools4  ,in favor of such
 a university several reasons may be    
given4 ,in the first place1 the         
interests of the higher education would 
be better served by such an institution 
than by one devoted to the higher       
education alone4 ,it is taken for       
granted that the ,freedmen and their    
descendants1 for whom largely our       
institutions are established1 should1   
like all other people1 have the         
opportunity of the higher education     
given them to the extent of their       
ability to receive and use it4 ,the     

welfare of the masses demands that we   
train up leaders of intelligence and    
principle4 ,that this work is not being 
overdone at present is evident from the 
fact that only ninety-one college       
students are reported in all the        
institutions of the ,american           
,missionary ,association put together1  
and only about fifty in all have ever   
been graduated from our college courses 
since our work in the ,south began4     
,now1 the principal reason why our work 
in the higher education has been so     
limited1 has been the great scarcity of 
suitable material for college classes2  
and the reason of this scarcity has been
 that our preparatory departments have  
not been able to get hold of their      
pupils early enough4 ,pupils come to us 
heavily handicapped by a lack of proper 
training1 moral and intellectual1 in    
early childhood4 ,now1 who can doubt but
 that the universities that are going to
 have the best college classes twenty   
years from now1 and do the best work1   

will be those that soonest put the      
kindergarten1 or some equivalent of it1 
underneath all their present courses of 
study1 and thus manipulate the entire   
education of their pupils from the age  
of five onward8 ,a thoroughness and     
symmetry of training could be realized  
by such an arrangement which would be   
scarcely possible under any other4  ,but
 a second reason in favor of such a     
university is the invaluable help it    
would render to the cause of general    
education4 ,here let it be explained    
that it would not be the purpose of the 
proposed institution to take the work of
 preparation for college out of the     
hands of preparatory schools elsewhere2 
nor would it expect to carry all its own
 beginners through to the end of its    
higher courses4 ,it would1 however1 if  
properly manned and equipped1 expect to 
show what might be called specimen work 
from the bottom to the top of an        
education4 ,such work would be a        
stimulus to all other schools of        

whatever grade1 and the methods employed
 in these schools would gradually come  
to be patterned after those in vogue at 
the university4 ,the more the lower work
 of the university was duplicated       
elsewhere1 the more would its own       
recruiting ground for the higher courses
 be enlarged1 and the wider would its   
influence become4  ,a third reason in   
favor of such a university concerns the 
association of normal and industrial    
departments with the collegiate4 ,it    
should be our aim to cultivate manhood  
and womanhood rather than mere          
scholarship4 ,the culture we give must  
be guarded from selfishness4 ,the       
practical uses of all education must be 
kept prominently in view1 and especially
 the urgent need of trained teachers and
 artisans4 ,the dignity of labor must be
 emphasized4 ,on the other hand1 our    
normal and industrial work should be    
guarded from the narrow and             
materialistic spirit into which such    
training is sometimes apt to fall4 ,now1

 the association of all these           
departments under one general management
 will surely bring to each from the     
others some salutary restraint or       
broadening influence4  ,in connection   
with the practical aim of such a        
university1 ,i desire to specify two    
features which should characterize it1  
both of them rendered necessary by the  
same cause--the almost entire lack of   
true homes among the people we are      
seeking to uplift4 ,in consequence of   
this deplorable lack1 two duties press  
upon us3 first1 to obviate the          
difficulties arising from this cause in 
our present educational work1 and       
second1 to remove the cause4  ,the first
 of these duties suggests the           
kindergarten1 already proposed4 ,i use  
this term for the lack of a more        
convenient one2 contending simply for   
some system of training for children    
under the usual school age4 ,among      
cultivated people1 and even the         
intelligent farmers and artisans of     

cultivated communities1 every home is a 
kindergarten--a preliminary             
training-school for the eyes1 hands1    
brains1 and hearts of toddling and      
prattling humanity4 ,very few such are  
to be found among the poorer classes of 
the ,south4 ,hence arises the necessity 
of beginning our work earlier than      
elsewhere1 and using appliances which   
elsewhere might seem superfluous4 ,but  
it will not be enough to have the       
kindergarten composed entirely of day   
scholars from the neighborhood4 ,there  
should be a special building for a      
children's home1 with an able matron and
 assistants in charge of it4 ,into this 
could be gathered from a wider territory
 as large a number of little boarders as
 might be thought desirable4 ,the       
inestimable advantage of this           
arrangement would be that a considerable
 number of children would thus be       
separated from their unfortunate        
surroundings for twenty-four hours each 
day instead of six1 and for seven days  

in the week instead of five4 ,from this 
number1 in after years1 would           
undoubtedly come our best material for  
the college and normal classes4  ,but a 
second pressing duty is to help the     
growth of true homes among these people4
 ,this must be done largely through the 
girls who come under our care4 ,for this
 also a separate building should be     
provided as a housekeeping school4 ,it  
should be constructed like an ordinary  
dwelling-house1 with such conveniences  
within and around it as civilized people
 aim to secure4 ,it should not be too   
large1 lest the coziness of home be     
lost4 ,it should have a parlor with     
pictures and books4 ,it should have a   
garden with flowers and shade trees4    
,above all it should have the most      
commodious and convenient kitchen and   
pantry that can be arranged4 ,let a     
dozen girls together occupy this house  
for a fortnight at a time--all those in 
the university taking their turn in the 
course of the year4 ,let some good      

woman1 as near like ,mrs4 ,cornelius or 
,marion ,harland as can be found1 be put
 at the head1 and let her teach these   
girls how to cook1 sweep1 dust1 make    
beds1 set the table1 wash the dishes1   
and in general how to make home as      
attractive as our ,christian            
civilization knows how4  ,finally let it
 be observed that such a university     
would be simply an expansion of what is 
now being done in our present higher    
institutions1 and which the force of    
circumstances has compelled us to do4

although it has been used by that body  
of believers for forty years4 ,deacon   
,delbridge makes the best suggestion1   
namely1 that as they are now enjoying   
the fruit of the prayers and labors of  
the abolitionists1 of whom at the time  
they had known nothing1 so now the new  
church is to enjoy this hallowed service
 for the ,lord's table which has come to
 them from ,christian friends whom they 
had never known4 ,professor ,francis

the ,university had taught some of these
 same members1 had come from that church

doubtless used these same communion

fruitage has been gathered into other

pastors and delegates1 filing from many 
directions1 met at depots1 their very   
greetings the happy premonitions of a

 of rendezvous1 and the cars from thence
 to ,marion were quite well filled1 as  
in the latter place the conference was

 here by that which alone ,i take no

excellent railroad officials thought we 
were anxious to ride in the same car    
with our pupils1 teachers1 and church   
members1 because they were black1 while 
really the young people were only asking
 for what their first-class tickets     
called for4 ,i would like to raise a    
question here4 ,what can be done about  
these first-class tickets sold to       
colored people1 compelled to take       
passage on them in second-class cars8   
,we missionaries are most heartily in   
favor of a peaceable solution of this   
question4 ,a quarrel takes time and     
nerve1 and hinders ,christian           

development and progress2 yet some apt  
person has said1 8,if you have got to   
have one1 there is nothing like it40 ,i 
hope that we shall be wise enough not to
 have one4  ,once at ,marion1 how       
cordial and hearty the greetings6 ,we   
forgot our tribulations by the way in   
the warm hearts and friendly tones of   
co-laborers4 ,the houses of some of our 
,southern friends were open to us for   
entertainment1 and we very much enjoyed 
their sincere and graceful hospitality4

previous to the ,conference1 but in     
connection with it1 was opened by a

  ,to do justice to the interest of the

all of the space allotted me4           
,sunday-school reports given by         
delegates from the various schools were 
never more interesting4 ,the work of    
temperance in all the schools was a

the temperance work among the children1

query arises in the minds of my readers1
 it may help to make it clear when ,i   
say that though black he is white4  ,the
 ,conference opened ,saturday night with
 a glowing and effective sermon by our  
,field ,superintendent1 ,dr4 ,roy4 ,how 
easy it seemed1 while listening to him1 
to make sacrifices for the dear name    
that every ,christian loves4  ,in the   
much regretted absence of ,president    
,de,forest1 of ,talladega ,college1     
,rev4 ,g4 ,w4 ,andrews filled his place1
 and as it was communion ,sabbath1 spoke
 from the words1 8,i am the bread of    

life40 ,that it satisfied the hunger of 
many new disciples was evidenced before 
us by the nineteen who were taken into  
the church that morning and partook for 
the first time of this emblem of the    
life-giving power of our ,saviour4 ,the 
beating rain without only made the      
comfort1 security and sweet peace within
 the more precious4 ,as we looked into  
one and another of the formerly hard    
faces of these new travelers in the     
narrow way we felt how great the reward 
of the faithful laborers who have been  
instrumental in putting the new song    
into their mouths4 ,it added to our     
personal interest in them that the      
pastor and wife had told us of the      
especial efforts on the behalf of each  
one4  ,sabbath afternoon was given to   
the children1 but the rain kept them at 
home and also hindered the night        
service4 ,rains in ,alabama are surely  
as emphatic as ,miss ,e4 ,b4 ,emery with
 her impressive pen1 claims they are in 
,boston1 and this season the disposition

 of each rain is to develop a flood4    
,on ,monday1 after the very spiritual   
devotional exercises which preceded the 
beginning of each morning session1 the  
business of organization was attended   
to1 followed by reports from the        
churches4 ,i have wondered why it is    
that these reports so often considered  
8dry0 in the ,north1 should in this     
,southern work always be so full of     
interest4 ,is it that the ,spirit here  
is 8poured out like water08  ,an        
interesting paper upon 8,what caused the
 intellectual darkness of our ancestors 
and how shall we avoid a like           
repetition80 by ,mr4 ,y4 ,b4 ,sims1 was 
well spoken of by all as thoughtful1    
earnest and suggestive4  ,next there    
came a masterful paper by ,rev4 ,o4 ,w4 
,fay1 of ,montgomery1 on the 8,new      
,revision1 its excellencies and         
defects40 ,some of us had listened to   
,dr4 ,schaff on this subject of the     
revision last summer at ,chautauqua1 and
 we felt that the ,dr4 ,schaffs were    

multiplying4 ,the remainder of the      
afternoon was spent in examining three  
candidates from the ,theological        
,department of ,talladega ,college for  
licensure4 ,as it was not my privilege  
to hear the examination1 ,i noted the   
words of a very competent judge who said
 that their careful and correct answers 
showed the thoroughness of their        
theological training4 ,the harvest is   
plenteous and the laborers are          
multiplying4  ,another feast of the     
meeting was enjoyed at night in the     
address of our ,field ,superintendent1  
,dr4 ,roy1 upon the 8,geography of      
missionary work in the ,united ,states1 
more particularly in the ,southern      
field40 ,capt4 ,c4 ,w4 ,lovelace1 of    
,marion1 a warm friend of the work1     
requested a repetition of a portion of  
it on the following night and brought   
with him several of his white friends to
 hear it4 ,they expressed satisfaction  
and profit at so much information4 ,some
 hearts among our ,southern friends are 

evidently taking hold of the work with  
us2 now what should hinder their hands8 
,tuesday morning was given to pastoral  
work and ministerial culture1 and the   
question how to promote revivals was    
participated in by all the brethren1 who
 were limited to ten minutes in their

spirit and in fact4 ,i was never in a   
meeting that seemed so to flow with

heard of such a passage of ,scripture1  
but it seems that people in this country

of a remark made in ,literary ,society3 
8,this school ought to draw in bad      
characters and trust in ,god to

year came ,miss ,anna ,gordon with a    
charming temperance talk and object     
lesson of burning alcohol4 ,her remarks 
made a decided impression4 ,several     
young people at once abandoned the use

,the temperance text-book and temperance
 charts have deepened the convictions   
and the gracious wave of religious      
interest carried some wayward hearts up

,one of our last year's graduates has

have just heard that a revival in her   
school numbers thirty converts4 ,when   
she first went there in ,july she       
induced a band of young people to visit 
the jail and read and sing to the

death wrote a note of thanks for the

remarkable for its neatness and beauty

and a half-dead donkey1 which the crows

 a pleasant chat with our ,arab guide   
and others4 ,for now1 with the help of  
signs1 we are getting so that we can    
talk quite a little ,arabic4 ,my        
,turkish is a great help1 as many words 
are the same4 ,the camels' backs are so 
sore that they have to be seared with a 
hot iron4 ,this is ,sabbath eve1 and ,i 
have had one quiet hour all to myself   
out on the sand under the stars4

out into a vast plain4 ,we met a party  
at the wells who were eight days from

granite boulders1 one of them looking   
exactly like a large cannon--sight and  
all4 ,mirage4 ,we lunch without shelter 
on the burning sand1 in a region called 
,bergat ,allouan4 ,in the afternoon1    
meet a party of three4 ,we make for a   
mountain pass1 but it is dark before we 

reach it4 ,but we push on in the        
darkness4 ,the camels are tired1 and    
have to be whipped to their work4 ,one  
is quite used up1 and his load is taken 
off and put upon others4 ,at last we    
camp in a mountain gorge1 called ,cub   
,el ,gorphas4 ,high wind4 ,it is toward 
#i o'clock before we stop for the night4
 ,we have been at it over #ac hours     
to-day1 and have made about #dj miles4  
,tuesday1 ,dec4 #bj4--;,it blew a       
hurricane all night4 ,at #b4cj ,a4,m4 ,i
 got up and dressed me for fear the tent
 would blow away4 ,the high wind        
prevented our getting ready for the     
start before #g4cj ,a4,m4 ,lunched again
 on the sand under the shelter of our   
camels1 but the wind was so great that  
our lunch consisted chiefly of sand4    
,the name of the place was called ,el

 quite a sand-storm4 ,passing a rocky   
gorge and a number of huge boulders1 we

hill that looks like a camel's back4    
,now we are on a boundless plain covered
 with bits of alabaster4 ,we meet       
several caravans1 and pass various boxes
 of goods that caravans have been

,aboo-,enteshat4 ,it is very cold as we 
get into our cots1 and blowing a gale4

#g4de4 ,every morning the guide invokes

patron of the desert4 ,cold wind--sandy 
plain4 ,make a pass between two hills

,mirage4 ,after lunch the guide gave the
 word and we started off on a fast trot 
for ,aboo-,hamed1 leaving the baggage   
train to come on behind4 ,we trotted all
 the afternoon over a long flat1

palm trees by the river4 ,on and on we  
went1 then all of a sudden we saw the   
river to the right of us4 ,how beautiful
 the real water looked6 ,as we neared   
the town we fired a salute1 and came in

officer here1 who talks ,turkish4 ,a mud
 hut near the river stood ready for us1

crossed in a crazy log boat that        
threatened every moment to go to the    
bottom4 ,here1 after bagging game enough
 for a day or two1 an accident happened4
 ,as ,i was running through some bushes 
,i suddenly became lame1 and thought    
that a serpent had bitten me2 but it    
afterward proved to be a thorn driven   
into the ankle clear to the bone4       
,doctor said it was in the worst        
possible place1 and did not dare to cut 
for it4 ,but the pain soon became so    
great that it was unbearable1 and the   
foot could not be touched to the ground4
 ,it nauseated me1 too1 and was         
altogether proving itself so much more  
than expected1 that he determined to    
probe for it4 ,twice he attempted it1   
working half an hour or so each time and
 sinking the forceps over half an inch  
and all he dared1 and finally1 to ease  

the pain1 he cut the nerve4 ,my chief   
consolation is that ,i am not the first 
man who has had a 8thorn in the flesh40

,doctor was afraid of inflammation in my
 ankle1 and all things considered we

the ground was covered with most

much to let the men get sober as

difficulties1 that which would be       
encountered in any village in ,china    
itself1 and the teacher--,miss ,mary ,c4
 ,waterbury--is almost as much alone    
there as she would be if at work in     
,china4 ,one ,american family--a        
gentleman and his wife--reside at the   
point1 having charge of the ranch and   
collecting the ground rents due from the
 ,chinese fishermen1 and in this family 
she has her only opportunity for free   
conversation in her native tongue4 ,i

draw the net seven days in the week1    
early and late1 day and night1 are      
resting4 ,they are to have a good dinner

oldest form of idol-worship this dark   
world has ever seen4 ,this--not in      
,china1 or in ,ethiopia1 but right here

sound and light of the glorious gospel

table is spread with the very best the

will tell you what he has done within   
the last few months4 ,he has formed a   
temperance society1 and ever so many    
little boys and girls have joined it4   
,no one can be a member of this society 
until he has promised not to drink beer1
 nor egg-nog1 nor anything that has     
alcohol in it1 and he must say he will  
not use tobacco1 nor swear1 nor say bad 
words of any kind4  ,the way he began   
was1 one day a little boy came into the 
yard1 ,i mean ,ted's father's yard1 to  

split wood4 ,he was just a little       
fellow1 not much larger1 ,i believe1    
than ,ted himself1 and1 if you can      
believe me1 he was smoking6  ,of course 
,ted was shocked1 and he thought it must
 be stopped1 so he talked to the little 
boy1 and after some persuasion got him  
to promise not to touch tobacco again1  
and that was ,ted's society4 ,well1 the 
little boy began to help ,ted to        
persuade other little boys to join the  
society4 ,and so they found plenty4 ,you
 see there are ever so many people      
everywhere ready to be good and wise if 
they only had some one to show them how4
 ,so it came about that one after       
another the little boys went to ,ted's  
house to sign the pledge4 ,ted's mother1
 who is one of those mothers that can be
 in many ways a great comfort to a boy1 
helped about getting cards for the      
children1 and bits of blue ribbon to    
wear as a sign that they belonged to    
,ted's society4  ,well1 little girls    
began to join too4 ,of course ,ted's    

little sister did so the first of all1  
for she does not like to be behind her  
brother in doing right things1 and then 
other little girls came4 ,why1 one      
evening ,i went to ,ted's house1 and    
there were seven little people who had  
just been in to sign the pledge4 ,of    
course they carried a great deal of mud 
into the house4 7,it is a very muddy    
place where ,ted lives4 ,oh1 my6        
,sometimes ,i think there is more mud   
than anything else there47  ,ted1 and   
his mother and father1 were there1      
looking just as happy as if nothing     
could make them so glad as to have the  
carpet all covered with muddy prints of 
little shoes2 but ,i do not think they  
were so very glad about the mud as they 
were to see that the small attempt to do
 good promised to become a great work1  
and that1 with ,god's blessing1 ,ted    
might be the means of helping those     
little boys and girls to become good men
 and women4  ,ted has more than one     
hundred little people in his society    

now1 and he still keeps working to get  
in more4  ,i think ,i forgot to tell you
 that ,ted lives among the colored      
people in the ,south1 and that his      
society consists of colored children2

to know it now1 as if ,i told you at    
first8  ,yes1 his father and mother are 
missionaries1 and if it were not such a 
large name to give a little boy1 ,i

,april #eth4 ,she entered the service of

and retired at the close of the         
school-year in #ahhj1 with health and   

strength so impaired that the rest and  
change of climate1 which she            
subsequently sought1 brought no real    
improvement4 ,these years of faithful   
service had been cheerfully and         
enthusiastically given4 ,the thought of 
them gave her great comfort and         
satisfaction during the months of       
weariness and suffering which preceded  
her death4 ,her recovery was hoped for  
by herself and friends up to the        
beginning of the new year4 ,in ,january 
her physician sent word to ,miss ,e4 ,m4
 ,barnes1 a teacher in ,fisk            
,university1 that there were            
developments of a fatal disease1 and    
that death was but a question of a few  
weeks1 possibly months4  ,miss ,barnes  
had been associated with ,miss ,stevens 
for ten years as a teacher in the       
,south1 and had been her most intimate  
friend and companion4 ,she owed her life
 under ,god to the faithful nursing and 
care of ,miss ,stevens1 when attacked by
 yellow fever during the prevalence of  

that scourge in the city of ,memphis1   
,tenn41 in the fall of #ahgc1 at which  
time three teachers of the ,mission     
,home lost their lives4 ,miss ,barnes   
resigned her position and hastened to   
the bedside of her sick friend4 ,the    
following extract from her letter1      
announcing the death of her friend1 will
 best illustrate the peacefulness and   
beauty of the closing weeks of her life3

,yesterday we laid her body away to its 
last rest4 ,rest--how much that means to
 her2 it had been so long since she had 
known rest4 ,she had failed very rapidly
