there is a brighter side4 #b4 ,the unprecedented facilities now available for the prosecution of our work4 ,never was a civilized people so well prepared as our nation now is to meet this great emergency4 ,the progress made in the science of education was never so great as it has been in recent years4 ,the adaptation of methods of teaching to the varying necessities of pupils was never so well understood as now4 ,text-books and school apparatus1 juvenile literature and helps for ,biblical study were never so excellent as at present4 ,the value of industrial training1 even as an element in the most liberal culture1 is receiving unwonted emphasis4 ,in short1 the accumulated wisdom of the latest and best century stands ready to serve us1 if we only summon its aid4 ,much of it is in service already2 but far more is needed than our present financial resources can command4 #c4 ,the necessity of a high order of talent in the teachers and managers of our work4 ,to understand thoroughly the needs of such pupils as crowd our schools1 and to apply successfully the most approved educational methods1 requires something more than an ordinary teacher4 ,an eminent advocate of popular education has stated it as his belief that the most interesting and valuable improvements yet to be made in pedagogical science will be made in connection with the education of the colored people4 ,but tyros and bunglers in teaching will never give us much that is interesting or valuable4 ,the very best teaching ability must continually be employed in our schools and colleges1 and be properly remunerated4 #d4 ,the relation of our work to the future of education in the ,south4 ,the justification of all ,northern missionary teaching in the ,south has been that it was designed to accomplish what the ,southern people were not prepared to do themselves4 ,to whatever extent they may in the future take up our work1 it will still be our mission to maintain that helpful leadership which it has been our privilege to exercise from the beginning4 ,our institutions should be the best and do the best work of any in the ,south4 ,we should be the first to discern the peculiar needs of ,southern pupils and the first to introduce whatever is new and excellent in educational appliances4 ,we ought1 for instance1 to have at once industrial departments connected with all our larger institutions4 ,every normal and college graduate should be able to use intelligently either the wood-working or the iron-working tools2 and the same expenditure of time and money which the ,harvard and ,yale boys make in learning to wield the oar and the bat would accomplish this much desired end4 ,already our institutions are being visited by ,southern teachers eager to witness the advanced methods of teaching already introduced4 ,we should always be able to reward such visitors by showing them something which they have not seen before4 ,above all1 we should send out from our institutions such noble specimens of young manhood and womanhood as shall prove a stimulus to the whole educational work in the ,south4 ,the destiny of the colored race is to be largely determined by confess any sins that were weighing upon them4 ,the first who arose was a young man who was converted a year or two ago1 and who has ever since been foremost in every good work4 ,he said that he had been guilty of an act of dishonesty which had caused him much sorrow4 ,in a lesson that he had written upon the board a few days before he had misspelled a word4 ,one letter was wrong1 but as it happened to resemble very closely the right letter1 he reported it as such when he saw his mistake4 ,for the next three or four days he had no peace4 ,he knew that he ought to confess the act to the teacher whom he had deceived1 but he was afraid that she would lose all confidence in his integrity4 ,he also tried to persuade himself that it was a very little thing1 hardly worth reporting4 ,why not keep quiet about it8 ,no one would ever find it out4 ,but these thoughts brought no comfort with them4 ,the more he thought about the matter1 the more he felt convinced that his act was not a influence of old superstitions and ignorant associates1 who told her that she could not be called a ,christian until she would say that she had seen all sorts of impossible visions and had numerous strange experiences1 that she has hardly known which way to turn4 ,now she has come out from under her yoke of bondage and feels as if she had seen a great light1 a much clearer and better one than that for which she watched so many years4 ,we are hoping and praying that the good1 work which has been begun here may continue3 that those who have started in the right way may have strength of and before we knew what was going to happen1 with full steam on we ran bunt up against and on to the steep bank4 ,the men pushed and grunted1 and finally we got clear and righted up again4 ,we have witnessed a nearly total eclipse of the moon this evening1 soon after it rose1 which for the manner in which it came on and went off was very remarkable4 ,we could hear the natives in their villages trying to frighten away the dragon which was supposed to be swallowing the moon4 ,we tied up at ,esneh for the night4 ,here we went ashore with torches and lights to visit a portion of a temple1 which the younger brother only a small1 marshy corner1 through which ran a sluggish stream4 ,these lilies were found growing in the stream----all that the marsh and stream produced4 ,the gentler younger brother1 loving the beautiful flower1 cultivated it1 and found that it would always bloom on the ,new ,year4 ,its beauty and fragrance won the admiration of many and the demand for the bulbs increased till finally it came in from all parts of ,china1 and the wealth of the owner of the little stream and marsh soon surpassed that of the avaricious elder brother4 ,then1 through some pretence1 the candles have been lighted1 and before which the offerings have been placed4 ,then the idols of the household are worshipped1 and1 next1 those of the temple4 ,fire-crackers are snapped by the priests in the temple1 and by all the people at their homes and their places of business4 ,if any one has married1 or is successful in gambling or in business1 he expresses his gratitude by these explosives4 ,breakfast comes next1 composed of vegetables only1 for no blood must be shed or be used on ,new ,year's ,day4 ,liquor distilled from rice is sipped from tiny cups4 ,now1 calling and the exchange of cards follow4 ,only good words are to be spoken4 ,it is a violation of etiquette1 established by the custom of ages1 to speak evil of1 or to1 any one during the first ten days of the ,new ,year40 ,such of these usages as are purely social are retained by our ,christian ,chinese3 ,the house-cleaning which brings to our several mission houses a thorough renovation2 the trimming upon the walls and elsewhere with evergreen wreaths1 with bouquets of artificial flowers and other samples of ,chinese art2 the cultivation of the fragrant ,narcissus1 and the interchange of calls and cards and mutual good wishes2 the treating with candies1 fruits1 and tiny cups of tea----guiltless of the ,american concomitants of sugar and cream----all these you will find our ,christian ,chinese carrying forward with no less zest than their heathen countrymen4 ,in these cases1 this year1 they invited the teacher with the whole family to which she belonged1 to a banquet after the ,chinese style2 and in all cases the teachers seem to have been remembered with gifts selected often with exquisite taste and purchased at a considerable cost4 ,but with our ,christian ,chinese these days are holy days
