which position he held till the time of his death4 ,mr4 ,ketchum early identified himself with the anti-slavery cause1 and was ardent and constant in his endeavors to promote it4 ,his house was fired solecism in logic and common sense to admit the nation's right to manumit the slave as a war measure1 and equip him with the ballot as a reconstructive measure necessary to the safety of the republic1 constitutionally done1 and done by the same discretion and power which would be used in giving aid now to the ,states4 ,and it may be said that the use of this fund so largely by the ,states at their discretion for school purposes legitimates the confident assurance that a fund now given specifically for schools would be wisely and conscientiously devoted to that object4 ,as to the present needs look at the facts3 ,there are in the ,united ,states #f1bci1ieh persons1 ten years of age or over1 who cannot write their names4 ,more than three-fourths of these are found in the old slave ,states4 ,more than one-half of the whole number are colored4 ,if the general government should provide means to sustain a school for this class alone for three months in the year1 at a salary for the teachers of #cj per month for a school of #cj pupils1 it would require the sum of #ah1gai1ieh4 ,of this #ad1ddi1egi would go into the old slave ,states1 #i1ahg1ibb because of colored illiterates1 leaving to the politician1 who remembers what the electoral vote of that ,state is for ,president1 but to every citizen4 ,if the government should enable ,north ,carolina to keep up her schools for four months at fair wages1 instead of one month1 as at present1 at such a salary as can secure only an inferior teacher1 it would be something1 but not all that is needed4 ,if such a sum should be given1 ,mississippi would receive as her share of it #a1aai1fjc2 ,new ,jersey1 with nearly exactly the same population1 would receive #aei1gdg4 ,but #iei1ebi of ,mississippi's share would be because of colored illiteracy1 leaving nearly exactly the same amount for white illiterates which ,new ,jersey would receive1 which shows conclusively that it is because of the negro chiefly this help is needed1 and for him1 as a voter1 the nation at large is responsible4 ,in considering the disparity between the sum that would go to the ,south and the new ,states of the ,northwest respectively1 not only must we remember the negro as a factor in the problem1 but also these facts3 ,by the ordinance of #aghg1 by which ,virginia ceded the great northwest territory to the general government on such terms,mr4 ,webster said1 in his great speech on the ,foote resolutionas 8fixed forever the character of the population of the vast regions northwest of the ,ohio by excluding from them involuntary servitude1 and impressed on the soil itself1 while it was yet a wilderness1 an incapacity to sustain any other than freemen40 ,and six days after1 in his reply to ,hayne1 he said1 also1 that 8it set forth and declared it to be a high and binding duty of the government itself to support schools and advance the means of education on the plain reason that religion1 morality and knowledge are necessary to good 7mud7 ,sea4 ,after sunshine comes ,sunday-school1 from #i3cj to #aa ,a4,m4 ,the pastor is superintendent4 ,after the opening exercises1 the school separates by classes1 each going to its own room for forty minutes' study of the lesson4 ,our school at present numbers #ad classes1 of which three are ,bible classes2 an infant class numbering #fj and still growing1 the ten other classes being composed of boys and girls from eight to sixteen years of age4 ,attendance for to-day is #baj1 a fair average for pleasant weather4 ,at the close of study hour the school re-assembles for general review1 which occupies about a quarter of an hour1 and includes the previous lessons of the quarter as well as that of to-day4 ,the review1 though necessarily brief1 reveals two things3 ,one is the fact that we importance of calling to the diaconate only such men as were of unblemished reputation and unquestioned integrity in all that concerned themselves and others4 ,after the sermon1 amidst the most impressive stillness of the congregation1 the deacon elect was consecrated to his office1 through the laying on of hands by the pastor and the other deacons1 and with prayer4 ,the service was peculiarly solemn1 and will tend to awaken in our people a truer conception of the qualifications essential to the holding of responsible positions in the church4 ,the exercises were concluded with the administration of the ,lord's ,supper4 ,following this service is a half-hour prayer meeting in one of the ,bible classrooms4 ,to-day the attendance is unusually large4 ,that there is more than common interest is evinced by the twelve earnest prayers offered and the expressions of desire to serve ,god on the part of some who are still without the fold4 ,a sermon to parents in the evening1 previously announced1 and preached to a large and attentive congregation1 brings this day to a closea day filled with work1 of which only an outline is givenwork that instead of weariness brings rest may inspect the neatly-bound papers of a class that has successfully passed its final examination on this subject4 ,in the room across the hall where ,miss ,hamilton presides we shall hear classes in both political and physical geography1 and we shall be especially interested in hearing the senior class in theory and practice4 ,professor ,steele's classes in the natural sciences and civil government we may find in the library4 ,passing now to the model school we see a quiet1 busy room1 with three grades of pupils under the care of ,miss ,cornes4 ,besides the ordinary lessons we hear an object lesson given on some flowers4 ,we notice the skillful use of corn and other seeds by the children as an aid in the practical understanding of numbers4 ,we note that nearly every child in the scrubbed1 and the wardrobes and bureau drawers put in order4 ,some of them have cedar boughs1 the boys have cut for them1 and they fasten them upon the walls in pretty and fantastic designs1 tieing them with ribbons and hanging ,christmas cards and bright papers from them4 ,a few make pretty bowers for their dollies1 and perch them in a cunning way among the branches1 where they get loving and admiring glances from the little girls below4 ,then the clothes which have been washed and ironed during the week are laid out1 and the room is ready for the teacher's visit4 ,nobody knows when the ,indian girls would think it worth while to change their garments1 or how they would be laundried1 if it were not for the week's inspection4 ,as it is1 the piles are most of them full and white and neatly folded1 and the rather stolid faces grow eager as they look over the teacher's shoulder to see whether a zero or a five on the record is to reward the work4 ,soon the matron's room is a busy place4 ,girls in all the chairs and girls on the floor1 all manner of rents and rips and holes to be repaired1 and the motherly lady who has done the work many times for her own children and grandchildren1 goes among them busy and patient1 finds patches and pieces1 gives a hint here and a lesson there1 till the garments are whole again4 ,when the morning's work is done1 the lawn in front of ,virginia ,hall becomes a gay play-ground4 ,see-saws and jump-ropes1 balls and croquet mallets are kept busy all the afternoon4 ,a few fortunate girls borrow a boat from one of the teachers and row a mountain1 some distance back1 called ,jebel ,geder4 ,it was the policy of the government now to let them alone1 but a new ,governor of ,fashoda having been appointed1 he must needs show his zeal by getting after the rebels4 ,he frequently asked permission to attack them1 and finally1 contrary to orders1 he collected the garrisons from the ,sobat ,station1 from ,kaka1 and from ,fashoda1 about #djj regular soldiers1 and taking with him #bjj ,shillooks1 and other irregulars1 under the king or chief of the ,shillooks1 he marched against the rebels4 8,this chief of the ,shillooks was a fine young manloyal and energeticwho administered affairs among his people in the interests of the ,government4 ,the advance was made by forced marches4 ,they were six days on the way1 and when the #8fool' reached the mountain1 instead of resting his men1 he commenced the attack after a two hours march on the seventh day1 when the men were worn out and utterly unfit for it4 ,they were all cut to pieces and slain4 ,about #fj were taken prisoners1 and only #gj out of about #fjj escaped4 ,the ,governor of ,fashoda was killed1 and also the ,chief of the ,shillooks1 which we greatly regret1 as we but the ,sobat is abandoned1 as there is really nothing there worth saving1 except a few straw huts1 and they are welcome to them if they want them4 ,the station of ,kaka is also left without a garrison4 ,the people have become uneasy1 and these events1 taken with the news of the troubles at ,cairo1 have frightened them4 ,we are expecting troops from ,cairo1 but not to put down this muss1
