,pagin1 and ,krasnih4 ,we ,do ,not ,repent having ,left our ,native ,land4 8,in order to clearly show what a ,russian's opinion of ,queensland is1 ,i will now give a few extracts from a letter written by a ,mr4 ,godalov1 of ,canungra1 ,south ,coast line1 dated #bdth ,february1 #aiaa1 and published in certain ,russian newspapers3--'444 and so ,i am to be congratulated2 #afj acres of superb land1 with a healthy beautiful climate1 within #cj miles of the sea1 at an elevation of #c1jjj feet1 and this for #cbs4 an acre and #bj years to pay it in4 ,i consider it my duty to assure you that ,we do not ,repent ever having left our ,native ,land1 notwithstanding that my present social position is different to the one ,i occupied in ,russia1 and also notwithstanding the fact that the life here1 too1 is quite different to life in ,russia2 nevertheless1 ,i have never yet thought that ,i came out here on a wild-goose chase 7to say nothing of the children1 who cry when we1 jokingly1 talk of returning to ,russia71 in spite of the fact that my actual income--at present--is smaller than it was in ,russia1 life here is in no case worse4 ,the explanation makes this assertion obvious4 ,i do not have to pay mad sums of money for the rent of my house1 its heating1 the educating and upbringing of my children1 expensive warm clothing is unnecessary1 there is no need for you to worry about to-morrow1 and at last1 but by no means leastly1 for your own freedom and absolute liberty4 ,all this gives a deep reason why ,russians should emigrate to ,australia4444' 8,as previously stated1 the above are extracts from ,mr4 ,godalov's open letter1 he is well-known by the farmers of his district4 ,other characteristic cases are those of ,messrs4 ,danilchenko and ,ilyin1 in ,north ,queensland4 8,i satisfy myself with mentioning just these few cases1 but1 of course1 there are a good many other similar cases amongst the ,russian colony in ,queensland4 ,i have taken the above cases at random1 and think that they clearly illustrate that a good1 honest1 and energetic ,russian agriculturist cannot find a country with more favourable conditions than those offered him by ,queensland for applying his knowledge and labour to4 8,in view of my having received a large number of inquiries as to the shortest space of time in which profit can be obtained from land still to be cleared1 ,i1 in the interests of intending emigrants1 would like to give the following facts1 which are based on my own experiences3-- ,mr4 ,a4 ,mendrin's ,experiences4 8,we will say1 then1 that you have gone through the formalities of obtaining your land 7in ,queensland they are not complicated74 ,from the first day of your arrival on your farm you will start cutting down your trees 7these are mostly soft71 a normally healthy agricultural peasant should fell from #b to #b-a_/b acres of brigalow scrub in a week4 ,in this way in a month's time you should have about ten acres of trees felled1 provided you started this during the summer months4 ,you will want1 say #b-a_/b months1 for the fallen timber to dry before you burn it4 ,having burnt it1 you promptly start sowing maize between the stumps1 and while this is taking root you continue felling or putting up your fence1 as the case may be4 ,it will take about #aje days for your maize to grow4 ,you then pull the cobs1 and prepare them for drying and threshing1 which should take about two weeks1 at the end of which time you will be in a position to realise your first crop4 ,virgin soil in the district ,i am speaking of 7,wycarbah7 will yield about #fj bushels of maize to the acre2 that is1 from #aj acres you will get #fjj bushels2 the average price is #cs4 per bushel1 or #ij for the #aj acres you have cleared4 ,in this way seven months have gone by since the day on which you started work1 and you have #ij in your pocket1 less from #aj to #ab for various expenses1 such as packing1 delivery1 c4 ,i would like to make it quite clear that ,i have taken only the average price of maize above4 ,lately this article has been quoted at ,rockhampton at from #ds4 to #ds4 #c;d4 per bushel4 8,knowing how popular pig and poultry breeding and farming is amongst ,russian peasantry1 ,i can say1 with conviction1 that these two yield a very good source of income1 as do all other branches of pastoral and agricultural enterprise1 all of which ,i cannot give details of here in view of the space such information would take up4 8,finally1 ,i consider it my bounden duty to assert that my two years of careful study of agricultural and other conditions of life in ,queensland give me good foundation on which to consider this country as the ,most ,convenient1 ,favourable1 and ,attractive ,country for the average ,russian agricultural or other peasant to emigrate to4 8,i have to express my thanks to the ,lands ,department for the kindness and attention shown by them in all cases when ,russian subjects have approached them requesting advice and assistance40 ,for fuller information in regard to the resources1 modes of land selection1 and general description of ,queensland1 see the booklet1 entitled 8,pocket ,queensland40 ,compiled
