neglected in the most important and necessary part of her education4 ,knowledge of unessentials and nursery physiology1 along with a smattering of academic teachings1 have held her apart from a true appreciation of her real value to herself and humanity4 ,physical exercise and moral admonition have been given her1 but not advice nor instruction which was based upon the proper foundationsex development4 ,details of sex hygiene have been kept from her1 and these1 with the care of woman's greatest jewel1 maternal possibilities through a perfect sex growth1 have all been left to chance and too often sad experience4 ,the girl is no longer completely protected by the old home influences4 ,to-day she is out in the world alone1 struggling for herself and frequently for others4 ,the high-school girl seems to be left in the same whirlpool of moving men and things1 and just now there are unpleasant revelations of the fact that she needs care and instruction more than her working sisters4 ,i have seen in private and hospital practice thousands of girls whose health was ruined for life through ignorance or false ideas concerning sex activities4 ,the land is crowded with suffering wives and broken-down girls whose woeful conditions are due entirely to ignorance of sex hygiene and how to mentally and physically care for their sex development4 ,if ,i can1 by my humble efforts1 stop the future mothers from suffering1 worry and ill health1 from bringing their daughters up in a state of criminal prudery1 ,i shall be proof against the slings and arrows of the fast-disappearing ,,sham4 ,in these ,,confidential ,,chats ,i tell in plain language and facts the things that1 had they been told to the girls of the last generation1 would have saved untold misery4 ,it is a pity that the facts and instruction which should come from a mother and a father 7due quite largely to their own ignorance71 must be sought elsewhere1 but this being so1 ,i intend that these ,chats shall supply what prudery and ignorance have denied the girls of to-day4 ,,william ,,lee ,,howard1 ,m4,d4 ,,confidential ,,chats ,,with ,,girls ,,chapter ,i ,,how ,,to ,,develop ,,into ,,womanhood ,the little buds on the rosebushes seen in the warm spring days and which later on in the early summer open to become the beautiful flowers1 are controlled and governed in their development by the same laws of ,nature that control your development from the little girl to a budding girl1 and then into the full blossoming woman4 ,every living thing upon this earth is given life1 growth and development under laws that are the same for the girl1 the woman1 the flowers1 the fishes1 the little birds4 ,the supreme ,power which controls us and every living being has so regulated the way man1 beasts1 birds1 fishes and even flowers are kept on the earth for the increase and progression of the world1 that by a plain understanding of these laws we can live and produce better and better men and women from generation to generation4 ,if you will carefully think the matter over1 you will soon realize that every living thing around us is the result of the mating of the male with the female4 ,roses marry and have little children just the same as a man and woman4 ,the little pussy willow1 which so early in the spring sends out its little babies in furry buds1 had been married to a willow man the year before4 ,the sweet grapes you eat in the autumn are the 8fruit of the marriage0 between a male grape and a female grapethat is1 the seeds4 ,the little chicks hovering and hiding around the proud mother hen have for their father the crowing cock4 ,here is a good example of this absolute law of the supreme ,power4 ,if you take a few chickens1 all females1 and keep them shut up until they are young hens with no rooster ever disturbing their happiness1 you can never hatch chicks from the eggs of these hens4 ,you may put these eggs under a setting hen and she may sit there until the hens' doomsday and no life is possible in these eggs4 ,now at the same time shut up chickens with a rooster1 and when these chickens have grown to be hens you will be able to hatch chicks from their eggs4 ,if you take the eggs from your first lot of hens and in a dark room examine their eggs1 by the aid of a candle1 you will see only a clear egg4 ,now if you take an egg from the lot of hens who have had the rooster for companionship and hold it up to a candle1 in a dark room1 you will be able to see a tiny black or brown spot about the size of a pin's head4 ,this is the vital spot1 the male seed which1 upon entering the vital principle of the female egg1 at once begins to develop into a chick4 ,three weeks under the warm body of the setting hen causes the development of the chick from this tiny spot4 ,the little black spots you see in a mass of 8frog spittle0 are the vitalizingthe life-givingseed from the bullfrog4 ,these male seeds lie in the mass thrown out by the female frog4 ,placed in some quiet pool of warm water1 warmed by the sun1 the hatching goes on until the pollywogs are born4 ,it is the same with the fishes1 the turtlesevery living thingthe male seed must enter the eggs of the female before life commences4 ,the playful puppies1 the fuzzy kittens1 the butterflies1 the bees are all brought to life by the same principle4 ,always keep in your mind that no matter what the different ways of mating are1 how the little flower children are born1 how the puppies grow before birth and then come into the world2 they all are ,god's creations and made according to ,his laws4 ,so being made according to ,god's laws1 and we as human beings having absolutely nothing to do with these laws1 but are controlled by them1 there can be nothing wrong1 indelicate or shameful in knowing all about these matters4 ,in fact1 before we can have full reverence for ,god and obey ,his laws1 we must understand and know them1 what they mean to us1 how we are punished and warned for disobeying these laws and the fearful results following the abuse of our bodies and minds through ignorance of what our bodies require and ,god demands4 ,as ,i have told you1 every living thing1 from flowers up to babies1 is produced by the meeting of the male seed with that of the female seed4 ,every female1 flower or woman1 has a place to keep and hold these seeds until they have grown to be babies of some kind4 ,take the roses for example4 ,when the big rose gets fully grown in the latter part of the summer1 the little yellow dust you see in the center is the male seed4 ,botanists call these male flower seeds the pollen4 ,at about the same time that the male rose is 8going to seed0 the female rose is ready to take this pollen into her receptacle4 ,this male seed is carried to the female rose's womb1 the name of the organ in all females where the two kinds of seed meet and then grow into children4 ,the seed is carried into the rose's womb by the wind1 insects and birds4 ,when it is once deposited1 the rose's womb closes tightly1 and there the seeds of the two sexes remain and grow until in the spring you see the little babies in the buds4 ,these gradually grow1 as you know1 from the little colorless buds to the small pink ones1 and when the warm summer-time comes they burst open to become full-grown male or female flowers1 and in the autumn these marry and the next spring become fathers and mothers themselves4 ,it is the same throughout all ,nature4 ,nothing can become a living thing except through a marriage of the male with the female4 ,let us take the little birds for another example4 ,this will show you how the young bird comes from an egg and is born almost the same way that you and ,i were borncoming from an eggfor this is just what did occur in our case4 ,the female birds1 and all female animals1 have what we call ovaries1 from the ,latin ovum1 meaning egg4 ,these ovaries are placed1 in the birds and all animals1 in the deep region of the groin1 above the womb in the animals which keep the eggs inside of themselves until the babies are born4 ,of course1 the birds1 fishes and all their kind1 do not have a real womb1 for the eggs are laid outside of their bodies in a nest of some kind4 ,this nest outside corresponds to the nestthe wombinside of the higher animals4 ,all eggs are formed in the ovaries2 this is what the ovaries are for1 and at first they are tiny little spots seen only through a microscope4 ,at certain times1 like the mating time of the birds1 these eggs drop down from the ovaries1 ready to meet the male seed4 ,when this is accomplished the eggs at once begin to put on their shells1 which1 of course1 are only to protect the little growing birds while the mother sits upon the eggs4 ,as soon as the shell is formed the eggs are deposited in the nest1 and here the patient mother sits and waits for the little ones to grow until ready to come out and see the wide world4 ,then comes the pretty sight of the mother and father flying back and forth from the nest1 carrying some big worm or bug to feed the hungry and crying babies4 ,both father and mother work like ,trojans to keep the stomachs of their little children filled1 and if you will watch a pair of robins trying to feed their nestful of children1 you will say that they are the greediest little things you ever saw4 ,and they have to be kept crammed with worms and bugs1 because their growth is rapid and they must get strength enough to fly and take care of themselves before cold weather comes and to get away from cats1 snakes and other animals which want them for food4 ,and is it not a wonderful fact to contemplate when we know that these little birds will fly a thousand miles to a warm climate for the winter1 and will fly the thousand miles on their return in the spring and find their old tree1 limb and identical spot where their old home was8 ,if these little birds are watched over by such wonderful laws1 what must be the care1 laws and rules by which we are governed8 ,as the little birds come from a shell1 after being developed through the warmth of the mother's body1 just so do we1 after lying in our mother's nestthe wombcome to be born1 after we have been warmed and developed for nine months4 ,so you see that what ,i said about the laws of ,god being the same for every living thing is the absolute truth4 ,the ,springtime of the girl is when she commences to have her eggs form in the ovaries and drop into her womb4 ,she commences to bud at about the age of fourteen years1 and like the delicate buds of the flowers1 if care is not taken to protect her growth1 ill-health follows and she may so ruin herself that1 when she marries1 she is unable to be a mother4 ,while it takes only one spring and summer to make a full-grown flower1 or even a robin1 the girl needs twelve or fifteen years after she is born to get into her budding age4 ,and her future health1 morals and happiness all depend upon how the first four or five years of the budding age is lived4 ,and to live so that she will reach the highest development of woman1 the girl must understand all the laws of ,god and live according to these laws4 ,it is my purpose in these ,chats to show you these laws1 as well as to plainly point out to you how man and woman have constantly been disobeying ,god's words and how we are suffering in consequence of our ignorance and disobedience4 ,your ovaries are in place when you are born4 ,of course they are tiny things and not developed4 ,they remain inactive for many years after you are born4 ,but at about ten years of age the blood commences to flow through them and they gradually develop1 like the flower buds1 until they reach their ripeness4 ,of course this development varies in different girls according to their nationality2 those from the southern countries developing earlier than those from a more rigid climate4 ,about fourteen years of age is the average age in this country4 ,when the ovaries are developed the womb has also grown1 so that every month it gets rid of blood that accumulates there4 ,but at this period the womb is a very tender organ1 delicate1 not fully fastened to the ligaments from which it hangs1 and any rough play1 strain or carelessness at the time of menstruation may ruin you for life4 ,every girl should be proud of this budding process and care for it with a heart full of thankfulness4 ,just see how the little budding trees and flowers are cared for by a good gardener1 how careful he is to assist ,nature1 how by this reverence and thought the wild flowers are brought under cultivation and by the means of the pure soil in which they are planted1 by protecting them from frost and harsh treatment1 what beautiful blossoms1 scents and radiance results4 ,the laws of ,god make the wonderful growth and development possible1 but man1 by acknowledging these laws and abiding by them1 is able to increase the beauty and usefulness of all growths4 ,it is just so with us4 ,if we acknowledge the beneficent order which controls us1 if we reverently study to understand ,god's intentions1 then we are aided in all we do to perfect our own development1 moral beauty and health4 ,the reward we receive is in having children follow us who have benefited by our reverential and knowing efforts4 ,it is only by such an attitude towards ,nature that we progress4 ,shame of our ,god-given gifts1 studied ignorance of all ,his laws1 the ignoring of our powers for reproducing our kind1 all mean a going backwards in civilization4 ,disease1 sin and debasement is certain to follow1 and does follow1 for most of the misery1 disease and poverty is due to our past attitude in ignoring the details of the blossoming period of girls1 by allowing the process to go on1 paying no attention to the soilassociations and environmentsof either the girl or the boy4 ,everything in nature moves in cyclesthat is1 moves in regular periods4 ,the stars1 the planets1 the sun1 the earth1 the moon1 the tides1 the seasons1 all go and return at certain fixed intervals4 ,growths of all kinds on this earth have their periods of birth1 development1 death4 ,the active periods of every living thing is taken up with reproductive occurrences1 or the getting ready for reproduction4 ,the female dog has her regular periods when she is ready to be a happy mother1 so do the pretty deer1 the squirrels1 the fishes1 everything4 ,when the fishes' regular period comes around in the spring1 we call it the spawning time1 with the birds the pretty name of mating4 ,with the woman we call it the menstrual period1 from the ,latin word meaning monthly4 ,a pure1 honest woman1 honest to herself and her ,god1 can see nothing but a wonderful provision of ,god for keeping the earth populated and the opportunities for bringing man to a nearer understanding of his ,maker4 ,we need no orthodox religion to make man feel the essence of ,god within him when he understands the laws under which he lives1 and how by his own efforts he can improve his powers and give greater ones to those who have received his blood through a pure woman4 ,such is every good and intelligent man's thoughts1 his inner feelings1 but only through a woman's understanding of her greater powers in this respect can we hope to bring future generations to a higher plane4 ,it is in order to aid you in avoiding the many illnesses which have fastened upon women during the last thirty years or so1 that ,i speak so plainly in these ,chats4 ,i am obliged to say things and use words that at first may seem a little indelicate1 but if you have grasped the fact that ,i am humbly trying to tell you the truth about ,god's laws and sincerely believe that ,i am doing right in so telling you1 there will be no misunderstanding about my motives4 ,so ,i shall take you at once into my confidence and let you be the judge4 ,,chapter ,,ii ,a ,,general ,,chat ,the average ,american girl approaches puberty without any definite knowledge of what a menstrual flow means4 ,if you are one of these neglected girls and have had a fright when you first menstruated1 had all kinds of stories put into your head1 you must try to forget the fright and realize that all the stories are really nothing but stories4 ,if you have passed over one or two periods after the first one made its appearance1 it does not mean that you are going to become crazy1 that something is wrong with you1 but that the fright1 the tales you have heard and the sensitive condition at your age have all affected your nervous system1 and you will come out all right after you possess a full knowledge of these things as we go on from ,chat to ,chat4 ,the average ,american girl commences to menstruate at about fourteen years of age4 ,now if you have menstruated two years earlier or two years later it means nothing but a condition of your race1 how you have lived1 in the country or the excitements of the city1 and other social conditions4 ,from the time a girl first menstruates she can count on about thirty years of activity for the ovaries and womb4 ,that is1 if a girl menstruates for the first time at fourteen years of age1 she ought not to have any cessation of the periods until she is forty-five years of age4 ,so you can see that the later she is in starting1 the later she will be in stopping4 ,of course the same thing happens when the girl commences to menstruate earlier1 she will stop earlier4 ,the ovaries are two little sack-like organs lying on each side1 in the pelvis1 or the groin4 ,from each ovary runs a little tube to the womb1 which is situated beneath them right in the middle of the body4 ,now every month the ovaries send down the tubes a little egg which lands in the upper part of the womb1 and when the womb is full of blood1 which occurs every month in the healthy girl1 this egg is carried away in the blood4 ,i do not intend to talk to you about the process of procreation or the physiology of conception2 all these matters you may read about in the many good books which have been written upon those subjects4 ,what ,i want to tell you are facts and things not to be found in books and which will1 if you guide yourself by them1 make you a strong and healthy woman throughout all your life4 ,from the time you first realize that you are no longer a little girl1 but growing into a woman1 you should commence to take the best of care of the ovaries and the monthly flow4 ,these ovaries hang in the body by very tender and delicate ligaments4 ,never mind the names the doctors call these cords or other ligaments2 we are always going to speak in the simplest language1 so that you may get a clear understanding for the advice ,i shall give you4 ,these ovaries are sensitive to all movements of the body and to your emotions4 ,anger1 outbursts of indignation and wrong reading1 all these produce an effect upon the ovaries1 especially so when your period is in full activity4 ,you may be a romping1 strong girl with well-developed muscles and bones and never had to be careful of what you did4 ,but when the age approaches where you begin to feel strange1 somewhat timid1 and have new ideas and peculiar thoughts1 when the old kind of rough exercise tires your back1 it means that your ovaries and womb are receiving more than the usual amount of blood and are in no condition to be harshly knocked about4 ,at this time there may be slight bleeding from the nose1 for the first time a soreness of the breasts and nipples1 a light feeling in the head and a disposition to easily get out of patience with your companions and things about you4 ,when these many different feelings come you may know that the ovaries are getting ready to prove that you are a woman in the making4 ,now remember that the monthly flow of blood does not come from the ovaries1 but from the inside of the womb4 ,the ovaries make the eggs and send these eggs down into the womb1 as ,i have told you4 ,when you are married these eggs are made alive by the husband's germ of life and remain in the womb1 growing for nine months1 when the little babe is old enough to be born and make you the happiest woman alivethat is if you are in good health4 ,as long as you are a virtuous girl the womb cleanses itself every month4 ,of course this does not take place after you are married1 for if so1 you can readily see that the blood would carry away the egg4 ,and it will do this even after you are married and have a little live egg in you1 if you have not taken care of both womb and ovaries4 ,this condition may become a regular habit1 and then you end in being the most miserable woman on earth4 ,because these things have not plainly been told the girls is the cause for so much injury being done to the womb and ovaries while growing4 ,you have not been warned that you should cease all rough play1 active sports1 should not stand all day upon your feet nor dance late into the night4 ,some girls have been brought up to be over-active at this time just to prove that they will not acknowledge that there is any change or difference in them4 ,nature always punishes such an insult to her laws1 and the teacher who places such ideas in the girl's mind is generally one whom ,nature has already punished by denying her any of the sweet and powerful instincts of woman4 ,have nothing to do with these unfortunate and harmful creatures4 ,you must assist ,nature in her attempts to make you a complete woman2 give in to her by keeping quiet1 not fretting nor getting angry because you have to give up some dance or basketball game4 ,if you do not give up many of these pleasures when you are a growing girl1 you will have to give them up later on in life2 give them up forever4 ,for the first two years from the commencement of your first monthly period you should be quiet1 obtain plenty of sleep and good food and take no exercise except walking1 swimming and bending of the body in your room night and morning4 ,skating is not injurious if it is not overdone and you keep your feet dry and warm4 ,some girls have been injured for lifethough they did not know it at the timeby sliding downhill on sleds4 ,they were tossed off or ran into some post or fence and were slightly bruised4 ,such a slight accident caused a rupture or strain on the ovaries or womb1 perhaps the tender ligaments were stretched and the ignorant girl continued her play with them in this condition4 ,much of this advice may seem old-fashioned to you1 but in all truth it is advice founded upon the ,,new experience and knowledge of all physicians who have seen the havoc wrought by carelessness and ignorance in these matters4 ,the womb1 hanging by its delicate cords1 is at this time in the girl's life growing rapidly and consequently receiving plenty of new blood4 ,it has not reached full development and it takes but little to put it out of place and have it stay there4 ,the ovaries may be so twisted and put out of order that nothing can be done for them in later life but to cut them out with a knife2 then you are ruined as far as womanhood is concerned4 ,young age has wonderful powers of repairing injuries4 ,if it were not so1 but few would ever reach full growth4 ,but there are some injuries youth cannot correct1 and these are the distortions and displacements of woman's sex organsthe internal ones4 ,if you jar or tear these organs1 the ovaries and womb1 while you are growing1 you do not know of the injury at the time4 ,everything at this age is strange to you in feeling and function1 and slight pains in the back or groin1 irregularity or too little flow1 you think is nothing4 ,but it is ,,everything to you when you reach the marriageable age1 or when your time comes to become a mother4 ,the womb is pear-shaped1 big end upwards4 ,it should hang nearly straight in the body4 ,the small end is the outlet which opens at the time the baby is to be born4 ,it also opens slightly every month to let out the blood1 then closes when it has emptied itself4 ,now you can readily see that if it is twisted1 tipped backwards or otherwise out of shape1 birth can only be given at great risk to both the babe and its mother4 ,it may be out of place so that nothing but an operation will save life4 ,it may be so turned backward that the child is smothered while trying to grow1 and then must come a horrible operation4 ,even the unmarried woman will suffer from any of these misplacements of the womb4 ,every month the blood tries to pass off it finds obstruction2 pains1 griping pains occur1 sometimes the blood cannot pass away but remains to cause inflammations and tumors1 and unless corrected by an operation the poor woman's life is one of torture and invalidism4 ,ignorant1 never having been told of these important matters1 you may have tried to vault in the gymnasiums1 played a fierce game of basketball or gone to a dance when your flow was on4 ,this1 strange as it may seem to some1 is the most frequent cause of 8,women's ,troubles10 8,female ,weakness10 etc4 ,now there is absolutely no reason for a woman to have 8troubles0 or 8weakness40 ,nature has so made woman that in reality she can stand much more strain and endurance of a certain kind than man can4 ,at the start she is possessed of everything which makes a strong and well being throughout all her life4 ,she has to be of this nature1 for just think1 she does the work of two beings4 ,while the child is growing in the womb she has to watch and feed herself to give the little one good blood,,her blood4 ,when it is born1 she has to do the same thinggive it good1 health-giving milk4 ,then as the child leaves her breasts1 she has to watch and care for all its growing years4 ,besides all these cares she has her household1 her husband1 her hundred and one duties to perform4 ,surely all this requires a strength of body1 a determined will and an all-absorbing love4 ,no man could or would do all this,never6 ,a perfectly well woman1 a woman whose sexual parts are in their places and strongly attached there1 does all this tremendous work happy1 smiling1 and reaches the grandmother's chair with the sweetest countenance to be seen on a human face4 ,it used to be so2 we see but few happy and uncomplaining mothers now4 ,and there is but one cause for all the present misery and race suicide4 ,ignorance of sex laws and prudery in all the most vital matters pertaining to young girls is the reason and cause4 ,no exercise which puts a strain on the body should ever be taken by the growing girl4 ,especially true is this when you are having your menstrual period1 for then you should be as quiet as possible4 ,in many cases it would be best for the girl to remain away from school4 ,if you have to go to school1 that is if you cannot make your mother understand the matter1 you should be allowed to sit and not stand at your lessons4 ,every girl should be placed in the unembarrassing position to leave and go home at any time during school hours4 ,thousands of girls have been ruined in health because their male teacher or gymnasium instructor could see only a pupil and not a growing woman1 because a condition which should excuse one girl or make allowance for another1 or a state of sexual nervousness which means the girl ought to be sent home at once1 are subjects that are not talked over between a male principal and a woman teacherthat is1 not as they should be talked over4 ,it is an old story to the doctor1 these nervous and sexually-ill young women4 ,taken unwell in school1 perhaps suffering pains caused by a previous 8standing it out10 the poor girl increases the injury to her organs1 and besides being unable to put her mind upon her school work1 she suffers the humiliation of a low mark4 ,but we cannot do these necessary things at the public schools1 girls so often tell me4 ,well1 there is but one answer to such a complaint4 ,if the schools are so regulated that a growing girl cannot have the best of care1 consideration and instruction in these vital matters1 we had better close them allevery one4 ,but what we can do is to have schools for girls only1 and these must have teachers whose first thoughts are the physical welfare of all the pupils and who are thoroughly conversant with sex hygiene and all this means to the future women of our land4 ,i have to speak of this most important matter to you girls because in a few years most of you will have daughters to send to school1 and as it is almost a hopeless task to bring the present generation out of their mucilaginous prudery1 ,,you must take hold as mothers and demand that such care and instruction will be given your girls that we shall no longer have this sad condition of suffering and childless women as has existed the last forty years or so4 ,you will find the young men of your generation aiding and forcing these common-sense forms of education1 for they1 too1 are being instructed in the matter from their side of the question4 ,i remember a beautiful girl of fifteen years of age1 who was brought to me suffering from a nervous breakdown4 ,there was nothing the matter with her except everything4 ,never having had that care and instruction she should have had1 one day in school her pains became unbearable4 ,she cried1 and when she went to ask her teacher to excuse her1 this misfit of a teacher sent the embarrassed girl to the ,,principal4 ,of course she would not go and tell ,,him what the trouble was2 she left of her own accord and was marked for it4 ,but this was not the worst of it2 some evil-minded boys in her class laughed at her when she returned a few days afterwards and uttered those despicable hints which go straight to a good girl's heart4 ,and she never told her mother1 because her mother had never told her anything4 ,a girl in the schooloh1 there are a lot of these kinds1 ,i dare say you all know one or two of themtold her what to do to keep the monthly flow away4 ,so she finally had to go to the doctor1 who found a frightful state of thingsone ovary ruined for life4 ,for three years she remained an invalid1 and the shock she received1 added to the drugs she had taken1 had made her one of those many unfortunate women which fill our land4 ,all heavy lifting is dangerous to the womb and ovaries during the growing period2 therefore all the apparatus in the gymnasiums for testing the strength of arms and back should be avoided4 ,many a foolish or uninstructed girl has made herself a girl of muscles1 but ruined her ,,womanly ,,powers in so doing4 ,save all your strength and force for what ,nature intended a woman to ,,do2 don't throw it away in doing gymnasium stunts4 ,no real youth or man likes to see a girl do these things2 his applause does not come from the heart1 but only from the head4 ,such a girl may have strong arms in which to carry a baby1 but the chances are some other woman will have to give her the baby to carry4 ,of course every girl should exercise1 but it must be such exercises as is governed with her sexual organs ever in view4 ,as an example1 dancing is good recreation and exercise1 but it should not be indulged in two days ,,before the menstrual period and not until two days ,,after4 ,another thing which affects the wombretention of urine4 ,that is1 keeping the bladder full4 ,many girls have been brought up in such ignorance and under such false ideas of prudery that they will suffer pain from distention of the bladder rather than allow the slightest hint to escape them that they need immediate relief4 ,this brings about not only a weakness of the bladder1 which will in later life be very annoying and really embarrassing1 but the pressure of a full bladder on the surrounding partsthe womb and its attachmentsis apt to displace it and irritate it4 ,then again1 a girl may be within a few days of her flow1 and here the pressure of a full and hard bladder may set up an inflammation and bring on the period before its time4 ,all this tends to start an irregularity1 and when this irregularity is fairly established1 the girl's1 and later on the woman's1 life is only an existence full of misery4 ,in fact1 ,i think ,i am justified in saying that ninety per cent4 of the women suffering from nervousness1 hysteria1 restlessness and pain1 comes from the sexual organs being out of place1 twisted1 early inflammations and general lack of care of them from want of knowledge4 ,and it is so easy for a girl to grow into complete womanhood1 full of life1 good health and scarcely any unnatural knowledge that she has ovaries1 womb or breasts4 ,most women to-day only know they have a womb from the severe pains and that 8bearing down0 feeling about which they constantly complain4 ,please understand that in this ,,chat we are only considering general and common conditions which injure all growing girls and result in miserable health in after life4 ,i am only hinting about the errors due to ignorance which produce our hysterical women and childless wives4 ,and ,i want to repeat this fact1 that there is absolutely no reason for all this invalidism and suffering among women and girls4 ,the general rules ,i shall give you for perfect condition and good health must be followed by all girls and young women1 but ,i shall have to devote some time to the special needs of girls who work in shops1 large stores1 factories and those who are brought into close intimacy with men in offices4 ,those dragging pains in the small of the back so many suffer from during the menstrual flow1 and those racking headaches1 are not natural4 ,the pains mean that the womb is dragging or else pulling upon its supports2 that you need to rest and keep off your feet as much as possible4 ,if you are a schoolgirl1 you ,,must stay at home and rest upon your back much of the time4 ,there is no excuse for your not doing this4 ,to force you to go to school to take an examination or make up a certain lesson is criminal4 ,,strike6 ,it would be a good thing if you all formed a union for the protection of your future health1 and demanded your sex rights4 ,rest you should1 and must1 from all mental or physical excitement if you wish to be a woman who will be a blessing to those around her instead of a burden4 ,which had you rather ,,your daughter should have1 a certificate of perfect health1 with the knowledge that when she marries she can become a mother without danger to herself and child1 that she can remain happy in the nursery instead of miserable in the hospital1 or a diploma stating that she can read ,french poetry and write an essay upon 8,woman's ,career08 ,some of these statements you girls will have to read to your mothers4 ,then if prudery has blinded them to the truth1 take the matter into your own hands4 ,it is upon you1 in the future1 that depends the decent regulating of instruction in the public schools4 ,the girl who goes to dances or any evening entertainment lightly clothed1 low neck and short sleeves1 while she is menstruating1 as thousands do1 will certainly land in the doctor's hands or become one of those pitiful things1 a drug fiend4 ,and the drug habit starts from taking 8some harmless thing0 to ease the pains or stop the flow4 ,that curse of the ,american girls1 constipation1 does as much if not more1 to hurt the womb than a full bladder4 ,we shall have a lot to say about this matter later on in our ,chats about the skin and complexion4 ,when the menstrual period first makes its appearance the swelling and tenderness of the breasts1 the itching1 a feeling of fullness in the region of the womb1 are all natural and should not cause any worry4 ,if you are in perfect health and ,,keep so1 these little symptoms will become less noticeable as you grow into full womanhood4 ,so do not get frightened1 do not take any medicines nor act upon the foolish advice from other girls4 ,the flashes of heat1 frequent blushing1 dizziness and the frequent desire to pass your water1 are all natural4 ,there are some fortunate girls who approach and pass this first period without all these uncomfortable symptoms1 but most of you will have some or all of them4 ,the itching of the skin1 pimples on the face and body1 sometimes a sore throat1 all these are nothing but indications of the great revolution you are going through from being a girl to becoming a glorious woman4 ,then there are the toilet duties to be done at this period and throughout your life which make for perfect health4 ,oh1 yes1 ,i shall tell you all about these matters and what to do4 ,during the periods of the first year or so you are in a condition to catch many of the diseases all around you1 such as tuberculosisconsumptionerysipelas1 tonsilitis1 scarlet fever and the mumps4 ,remember ,i do not say you are liable to catch such a disease as consumption1 only that you are in a condition when the germs can find lodgment better than at other times4 ,of course you should never sleep in a room with a consumptive or even be around one at any time1 but should it happen that during your developing period anyone with the disease was liable to be brought into contact with you1 keep away1 away in the open air4 ,at this period also mumps may be a serious matter for you1 so if you have a little brother or sister who is suffering from this disease of childhood1 you should keep out of the room and1 if possible1 out of the house4 ,no matter if you did have the mumps when a little girl4 ,if you catch the mumps during the first years of your young womanhood the affection ,,may go to your ovaries4 ,this1 of course1 produces a painful swelling and1 if not attended to by a reputable physician1 will go to destroy the usefulness of the ovariesprevent you from ever having children4 ,this has happened in girls who did not knowor rather their mothers did not knowwhat the danger was1 and when the girl grew up to be married and no children came1 she was blamed1 often accused of being one who did not want children4 ,many a time when a young woman had been married several years and was childless1 ,i have asked the mother if her daughter had the mumps when she was growing into womanhood1 and if she suffered pain in the groin and back4 8,why1 yes1 ,doctorbut what has that to do with it80 8,didn't you know that the mumps sometimes went to the ovaries and destroyed their function80 8,why1 no2 it can't be possible80 8,yes1 possible and probable4 ,your daughter can never have children because you did not tell her all about her sex organs1 and when her little brother had a swelling and pain in the glands of throat and jaws1 you did not know enough to send her away or keep her away from him1 telling her plainly why you did so4 8,but you were never allowed to mention these things when you were a young womanyou never knew these important things8 ,exactly so1 and this is the punishment thousands of mothers and daughters are receiving for this prudery40 ,,chapter ,,iii ,,the ,,disorders ,,of ,,menstruation ,,and ,,general ,,health ,civilization has brought many unnatural effects upon the monthly period of women1 and ignorance of how to care for the body has made matters worse4 ,it is with these unnatural disturbances that you are mostly concerned4 ,the inability to understand certain symptoms of your menstrual flow1 the consequent neglect of these symptoms or ignorantly taking drugs and medicines for the troubles1 are the causes for so many girls and women being miserable and invalids struggling on under most distressing conditions4 ,there is always a good cause for any irregularity or stoppage of the monthly period2 some reason why the flow is scanty or too profuse4 ,these causes can readily be discovered when the girl knows herself and all that pertains to that self4 ,in the healthy girl the flow should come and go without any marked pains or distress4 ,of course during four or five days there will be a feeling of weakness1 lassitude1 a 8please-let-me-alone0 attitude1 and in many girls1 a desire for pure love and caresses4 ,these various feelings are natural and only go to show that you are a full-blown woman4 ,there is nothing to be ashamed of in this feeling for love and caresses1 this peculiar desire to want protection and a something that you cannot exactly explain to yourself4 ,it is really an awakening of all your womanly desires1 and these are your greatest powers over man1 children and the best of everything in the world4 ,these feelings should not be suppressed1 but kept under control4 ,they should be carefully saved1 for they are the feelings which bring future happiness1 and you want to give them as little attention as possible except that attention which keeps them pure and holy4 ,avoid all women who scoff at motherhood1 who deride the domestic life for women1 who stand and shout their demands in public places instead of sweetly using their influence for a better condition for men and women so that the future babies will have a proper birthright4 ,no discussion or knowledge which will make better fathers and mothers can be wrong1 but every attempt to ignore the subject is sinful4 ,there is nothing to be ashamed of in maternal feeling and impulses2 what a girl is to be blamed for is a want of control over these natural instincts and giving way to them4 ,the care of the company she keeps1 the kind of thoughts she lets get into her mind and the way she cares for her body1 are the factors which make for a good and chaste girl or otherwise4 ,but how can we blame all those girls who accidentally go wrong8 ,i certainly do not4 ,they have never been told just what to do1 where the danger lurks and all the consequences4 ,should we blame and shun the girls who have been sent out into the world amid the dangers and snares laid for them2 young women who see chastity mocked1 virtue a thing to bargain for1 the glitter of gold pouring into the laps of those thousands who find 8the easiest way0 out of their poverty and struggles8 ,yet the truth is1 hard as it may seem and as often as it has been told to you1 that virtue and chastity in deeds and thoughts ,,do bring rich awards4 ,these awards may be a long and tedious time in coming and the struggle is hard1 but in the end all this will be proven to have been worth while4 ,as ,i have told you1 the monthly period should come and go without much physical pain4 ,it should last from four to five days and be regular in recurring about every twenty-eight days4 ,but it is seldom so normal in the average ,american girl1 the girl who has been left alone to solve her own mysteries and go her own way4 ,this is equally true of the high-school girl or the working girl4 ,and why8 ,because she has been brought up through her early developing days to go on and disregard all her sex functionsthe greatest factor in all life4 ,the high-school girl has been mixed up with all kinds of youths and not kept away from tantalizing and embarrassing conditions4 ,the shop and working-girl has been forced to do her work1 day in and out1 standing upon her feet or working at a machine while the sensitive and full-blooded womb was trying to empty itself4 ,let us first consider the girl whose monthly flow is scanty or entirely absent4 ,she has arrived at the age of sixteen years and has not 8seen anything40 ,but every month1 for a year or so1 she has had headaches1 felt extremely nervous1 had some pains1 the breasts have felt tender and sore1 and altogether she has had a miserable twelve months of these symptoms1 but no relief from a flow4 ,what is the matter with such a girl8 ,remember ,i told you that the womb was pear-shaped1 the small end hanging down4 ,here is a little opening1 through which the menstrual blood flows1 and then out of the body4 ,the womb is in reality only a big bunch of muscles so arranged that it can relax and empty itself and then tightly close4 ,in the unmarried woman1 or before one has given birth to a child1 this little opening is completely closed except during the period4 ,even then it is only very slightly opened1 but open and shut it must if a girl is to be in good health4 ,a girl may have over-exercised or injured herself when she was twelve years of age or thereabouts1 and brought about a little inflammation1 which at the time she knew nothing about4 ,the womb was already getting prepared to do its monthly work1 and as the weeks went on the inflammation increased4 ,inflammation always means some kind of an extra growth at the injured spot2 like a scar1 for example1 after a wound has healed up4 ,the womb itself is not a sensitive organ to the touch or to slight inflammations at the lower end1 hence the little girl does not1 at the time1 feel any pain4 ,she may feel uncomfortable in that region1 but as she has been brought up ,,never to mention any matters concerning her sex organs1 of course she keeps silent while the injury goes on4 ,the little inflammation heals up1 but in healing what does it do8 ,leaves a scar1 of course4 ,now this scar may be big enough to have ,,closed the outlet for the monthly flowto have made the entrance of the womb grow together4 ,it is under these circumstances a sealed bag2 nothing can come away from it4 ,the girl's time comes1 but the blood does not4 ,all the other signs being present1 she watches and worries4 ,sometimes1 alas1 too many times1 she has never been told just what should happen4 ,backache troubles her1 headaches often drives her to take some harmful drug1 she becomes fretful1 loses control of her temper in the simplest things and finally loses friends because she 8is so horrid1 says so many cutting things40 ,yet she does not mean to be disagreeable2 she simply cannot help it4 ,how could she8 ,there is a clot of blood in her womb that cannot come away2 it remains and hardens and each month is added to by the banked-up blood4 ,it is a very sad condition1 and one that often continues until a tumor is formed1 or some other complication makes an invalid of her in the prime of her lifeor what should be her prime4 ,this condition is frequently the cause of hysteria1 of desperation1 of a gradual mental failing4 ,there is another condition which goes to ruin a girl's health and happiness1 for the effects are the same as in a closed womb4 ,there is a membrane in all chaste girls called the hymen4 ,this closes the entrance to the vagina4 ,now there should always be a little opening1 or several little openings in this membrane to let out the blood4 ,in some girls this is closed from birth2 so completely closed and tough that the weight of the first monthly blood cannot break through it4 ,then we have all the symptoms of the stoppage we have in the closed womb1 only the blood packs and hardens in the lower parts instead of the womb4 ,often this produces greater distress than when the same conditions exist in the womb4 ,here great bloody tumors form and the state of the poor girl is certainly pitiable4 ,from birth also the womb may be closed1 grown together4 ,then there are some girls so nervously constituted that the least touch on the muscles of the womb will shut it up spasmodically4 ,such a girl's womb is not grown together1 but when the first drops of blood are trying to ooze away1 the womb shuts tightly4 ,in all these cases the results to the girl is the same as ,i have described4 ,the remedy for all this misery is simple1 almost painless1 and will not detain you from your duties but a few days2 sometimes not at all4 ,by simply cutting or snipping apart the growth at the entrance to the organ1 or opening it by a little stretching instrument1 the fault is remedied2 the girl cured4 ,and all this simple knowledge could have saved thousands of suffering girls and women4 ,no1 it does not interfere with your proof of virginity4 ,the snipping is too slight4 ,but supposing it should8 ,what of it1 as long as you know in your own heart that your are a chaste girl8 ,do you want to be a miserable wreck of a woman just on account of an ancient superstition1 a foolish and harmful idea of a lot of old women and medieval theologians8 ,it is a sad conditionthis closed womband should not be allowed to sicken a girl for one hour,,if ,,she ,,knows4 ,alas6 she has not been allowed to know these thingsjust allowed to suffer and be blamed4 ,if you have reached the age of fifteen years or thereabouts and for a year or so have had all the nervous and mental symptoms of a period occurring every month and no blood comes1 then go at once to a reputable physician4 ,be certain you go to one in good standing4 ,never go to one who advertises 8women's troubles10 or to one whom you do not know by the best of repute4 ,remember that honest and true physicians do not advertise in the papers4 ,so whenever you see an advertisement of a doctor who says he can cure you of ,,that trouble1 keep away from him4 ,never mind what the other girls tell you about a doctor or some medicine that cured them1 probably the cause for their trouble was an entirely different one4 ,naturally1 your mother is the first one to consult1 but ,i fear that if you have a mother who has allowed you to suffer month after month1 and constantly said1 8,oh1 don't bother about such matters2 it will come out all right when you get older20 such a mother will not exactly be the one to go togo to a ,,reliable physician4 ,never1 under any circumstances1 take medicines for this trouble4 ,let 8regulating pills0 alone as you would a rattlesnake4 ,now that you know the cause1 common-sense will tell you that pills1 or any and all things of the kind1 are not only useless1 but harmful4 8,but1 ,doctor1 how about the girl who has had several good periods and then stops for several months1 or even skips a month and only flows every other month8 ,there can be no closing of the mouth of the womb under these circumstances80 ,no1 in such cases the cause is entirely different1 or rather the causes1 for there are many4 ,most of you can find out for yourself just what ,,your cause is for being irregular1 after ,i point out to you some facts4 ,many times it is only ,nature's way of preserving your health4 ,for instance1 if you have not sufficient blood in your system to allow you to lose a certain amount every month1 ,nature will prevent it going to the womb to be thrown away4 ,some girls will have 8nose bleeds0 once or twice a month and this takes the place of the monthly flow4 ,this is not a sign of good health1 just a sign that something is wrongsee a good doctor1 he will know and tell you what to do4 ,if you are troubled with headaches 7especially in the back of the head and neck71 if your appetite is poor1 if you lost too great an amount during your last flow1 or if your nervousness increases1 it means that you are in poor condition4 ,perhaps you have danced too much and lost too much sleep1 been unduly excited or had some great grief2 any of these things will affect in some way your menses4 ,anything1 in fact1 which lowers the tone of your general health will affect the menses4 ,if you are over-fat and growing fatter every day1 this unhealthful condition will stop your menses4 ,i don't mean a plump1 jolly1 happy amount of fat1this is a good state for a growing girl1but ,i mean an overplus of fat with white cheeks1 flabby flesh1 swollen ankles and big stomach4 ,such a condition indicates some disease4 ,there are many diseases which leave you in a condition of suppressed or irregular menstruation2 such as typhoid fever1 kidney affections1 chlorosislack of red bloodconsumption1 scarlet fever4 ,if you have gone through any one of these illnesses and your periods are irregular or scanty1 don't worry2 time will put this matter right as you recover from the general effects of the disease4 ,if you have reason to fear consumption1 be grateful that ,nature is preserving your blood to help you get well2 for1 as you know1 you can get wellcan completely recover from consumptionif you ,,will ,,eat ,,and ,,sleep ,,in ,,the ,,open ,,air,,live ,,in ,,the ,,open ,,air4 ,most of the causes for irregularities and scanty flows are due to your unhygienic methods of living and playing4 ,sleeping in rooms where fresh air only gets in through a crack1 insufficient and improper food and too much tea and coffee1 will soon cause irregularities and other menstrual troubles4 ,catching cold or getting wet feet1 damp skirts flapping around thinly-clad ankles just before or during the time of your monthlies1 will also bring you to some womb trouble4 ,then the influence of the mind upon all these matters plays a very important part in your health4 ,evil suggestions from girls or youths1 seeing plays which you ought not to see1 reading all that rotten stuff put out for young women and girls to read and dream over,i don't mean the nasty ones1 but all those which unduly excite the imagination and throw a false light upon lifethe ,duke1 the ,prince and ,villain kindthe virtuous blonde maiden and the hard-working hero stuff1 you all know what ,i mean4 ,there is plenty of good literature1 exciting stories1 to be read without reading a lot of cheap tinsel and ready-made romances which have no more to do with real life than a mask has to do with the human features4 ,you can over-exercise1 become too much excited over contests in the gymnasium1 use up force to such an extent that your growing womanly functions become weakened and sometimes dried up4 ,no girl of a nervous temperament should go into any athletic contest1 team or personal4 ,such a girl should not play basketball1 attempt any stunts on horizontal bars or flying rings2 nothing1 in fact1 which calls for a strain upon the nervous system4 ,the function of the womb1 as well as of all the sex organs1 are directly affected by the nervous system4 ,you can never be a strong woman1 complete in all that belongs to a woman and her career1 if you1 as a young woman1 over-strain the nervous system4 ,hundreds of girls who are playing contests of basketball1 to see which team is to be the champion of the state or the town1 are going to suffer from all this excitement4 ,your teachers do not take into serious consideration your growing sex organs4 ,they do not seem to know what it means for a girl to get over-excited at any time during her development1 that there is nothing except alcohol which will arouse dangerous impulses more than athletic excitement4 ,so do be careful of your exercise4 ,on the other hand1 no exercise will also produce some disturbance of the menstrual period4 ,if you do not take some form of useful exercise1 poisons accumulate in your system4 ,this causes unnatural fat to pile up around your ovaries and kidneys2 in fact1 it will bring you to a sad state in middle life if you have neglected to exercise in a careful and regular manner when you are growing4 ,the girl who works in the shop1 the department store1 or follows any of the numerous careers which are open to her1 as a rule gets plenty of exercise4 ,to be sure it is not the best kind of exercise by any means1 but as she has to be on her feet almost all the day1 for her to take any gymnasium work at night is harmful4 ,she needs the fresh air1 to eat proper food and to obtain plenty of sleepall she can get or steal4 ,the girl who is so situated that she can walk to and from her place of employment1 is fortunate2 the girl who cannot1 must get walking exercise in the open air some way if she wishes her periods and general health to be perfect4 ,profuse menstruation1 that is1 too much blood flowing and for too long a time1 is always a sign that something is wrong with the womb as well as with your general health4 ,it is not a sign that 8you have too much blood in your system10 but a symptom that the womb is weak1 has lost its tone and does not close up tightly at the finish as it should4 ,the cause is one of the many ,i have told you about2 too long standing on the feet1 going to parties or dances when you should have been in bed1 improper food or too little of it1 undue excitement at a time when you should have been quiet4 ,search well your own heart1 and some of the causes you will be able to discover yourself4 ,in other words1 any irregularity or little errors in your conduct will bring about irregularity in your menstrual functions4 ,no girl should use the sewing machine when she is unwell1 or do any work which involves the movement of the thighs and legs4 ,food1 nourishment and clothing have a lot to do with all the irregularities and disturbances of the sex organs1 but we shall have to chat about these important matters when dealing with the skin and complexion1 so leave them here4 ,it will save repeating4 ,one great cursefor that is what it really isof all ,american girls and women1 is constipation4 ,false modesty1 ignorance and not drinking enough water are the principal causes for this injurious state4 ,but never mind the causes1 let us get at the effects4 ,every portion of your body1 including the bones1 can be in a state of good health only when constantly supplied with fresh water4 ,coffee1 soda water1 chocolate or other makeshifts do not take the place of pure water4 ,you should get the water into you daily1 by the quart4 ,i wish ,i could go into this matter so thoroughly as to make you all see and understand the importance of this fact4 ,however1 ,i can show you in these ,chats how necessary it is even to your sex organs and what they throw off1 to make you1 ,i hope1 drink plenty of water throughout all your lives4 ,the bowels must be emptied every day4 ,any keeping of the cast-off material of the intestines in the bowels means an odorous skin1 foul breath and other disagreeable odors1 no matter how clean you may be ,,outwardly4 ,then there is another very important feature of this dried-up state4 ,as you grow older the arteries harden1 they cannot expand and contract as the blood pressure demands they should1 and when any strain comes upon the heart or blood vessels1 these latter burst and apoplexy is the result4 ,but before this takes place there has been a failing of the memory1 perhaps of the intellect1 because the proper amount of blood needed to nourish the brain cannot pass through the tiny1 but important arteries of the brain4 ,so some kind of softening of the brain follows4 8,she died from apoplexy0 is said4 ,no1 she died because1 when a young woman1 she would not drink water in sufficient quantities to keep her organs flushed and clear of accumulated material4 ,now1 if this absence of water in the system so affects the brain1 its arteries and veins1 just imagine what trouble the womb will have in getting enough water for all its needed blood4 ,but there is a more important effect that the absence of plenty of water in the system has upon the girl4 ,it is a very serious matter to her1 as it affects her attractiveness and happiness1 and this is what we want to get at in these ,chats4 ,you all know that at certain times girls will have more or less an odor from their skins and breaths4 ,it is very noticeable in some girls1 and in others of the most careful cleanliness and habits it will be detected4 ,perfumery only makes matters worse2 the attempt to cover the natural odors is too marked4 ,these odors are all caused by acids and other chemical materials which exist in the natural secretions of the body2 the perspiration1 breath and other secretions4 ,the less water there is in the human system1 the more will these chemical odors pervade the atmosphere surrounding the girl4 ,it is the lack of plenty of water that causes the skin to give forth odors4 ,if you have exercised to the extent of bringing on profuse perspiration and have not drank plenty of water before1 during and after the exercise1 no amount of bathing will prevent an odor coming from the skin4 ,if you are going out to a dance or any place where you will be in a warm room1 you will not be able to disguise the chemical odors coming from the skin4 ,but if you have filled your system with water two or three hours before going out1 your skin will have a delicious1 natural odor4 ,during the menstrual period every gland in the growing girl is very active4 ,the skin throws off an extra amount of perspiration1 the glands under the arms are very1 extremely1 active4 ,then at this time the breath comes faster than usual and throws off its poisons in large quantities4 ,all these off-castings of the body are loaded with material that must leave the body if we are to keep in good health4 ,but here is the point4 ,you can so saturate your system with pure water that all these fatty and acid odors become highly diluted and scarcely any of them will make their presence known to those around you4 ,drinking water will make you fat8 ,nonsense4 ,that is some old woman's talesome old woman who tries to excuse herself from drinking water4 ,water will not make you fat nor make you lean2 just keep you in the good health and state you were born to be in4 ,then it helps keep the bowels clean1 gives a good flow to the blood and keeps the womb free from any little clots being left over from your last menstruation4 ,how much water shall ,i drink8 ,two tumblerfuls every morning before breakfast1 two between each meal and as much at meals as you want4 ,don't bother yourself about the fads of drinking water1 such as none at meals1 for instance4 ,look at a horse2 he drinks when he is thirsty and he drinks all he wants4 ,take water away from a horse1 keep it away from him as it has been kept away from girls and young women1 and you would soon see his coat become dull1 sticky1 and the light go from his eyes4 ,remember that a horse's coat of hair corresponds to your skin2 it is his complexion4 ,deprive yourself of water and your skin becomes dull1 sticky and malodorous4 ,but we shall have a lot to say about the skin1 so nothing more now4 ,with all this good habit of drinking plenty of water must go the application of water to the outside of the body4 ,this you must do to wash away the dried crystals of all the chemical materials sent out from the skin and glands4 ,warm ,,sponge baths1 while you are menstruating1 are necessary4 ,i know that you all have been told never to take a bath while your period was on1 but you see that you must get rid of these tell-tale odors now that you are out in the world4 ,of course you must be careful not to take cold2 you should not use any but warm water1 and then jump into bed warmly covered4 ,use no scented soap1 not even under the arms1 just plain castile or a similar ,,pure soap4 ,after the flow has ceased be certain to wash your external parts with a soft sponge and pure soap4 ,you want to consider this part of your toilet just as important as washing the teeth or ears1 and it should be done in the same unconcerned and unthinking manner4 ,,chapter ,,iv ,,the ,,care ,,of ,,the ,,skin ,,and ,,complexion ,all girls want a good complexion and a clear skin4 ,the skin and hair are the glories of a healthy woman4 ,most of you can have this desired state of a clear skin and pure complexion4 ,a good complexion merely means a perfect state of health4 ,a clear skin does not depend on what you apply to it1 but what you keep off it4 ,the clear1 satin-like skin1 the skin which looks like a transparent piece of silk laid upon a soft cushion of white flesh1 and that sheeny skin resembling fine velvet1 seen in the pure blonde type of girls1 are all the effects of the blood beneath and how that blood is treated by the emotions4 ,muddy and contaminating thoughts will cause a muddy skin4 ,clean and clear thoughts will give you a clear skin4 ,jealousy and anger will1 in time1 affect the flow of blood through your tiny skin-veins and give you the appearance of age4 ,any emotion which causes indigestion will do the same thing4 ,in fact1 the state of mind and the manner in which you control your thoughts and temper are reflected in the tone of the skin4 ,it is during the first few years of menstruating that the girl who does not understand these matters commences to ruin her complexion4 ,while your body is developing1 the tiny glands in the skin are undergoing great changes4 ,these changes cause the glands to pour out oily matter1 perspiration and other material1 all of which naturally bring about a muddy complexion in some girls and redness of the nose1 or pimples on the face1 in others4 ,these conditions are natural to the growing girl4 ,the skin is clearing itself of all the little girl's activities and making ready for the woman's complexion4 ,it is ,springtime with the skin1 and this dirtor what looks like dirtis the result of all this skin-cleaning4 ,hair is appearing on certain parts of the body2 that almost invisible down which all women possess1 is growing on all portions of the body and face4 ,the monthly periods are causing congested blood vessels throughout the whole body and especially the tiny arteries of the skin4 ,every part of your system is really undergoing a great change and does not get into a state of perfect health until you are eighteen years of age and over4 ,as in all things in which a decided revolution takes place1 there is more or less of a disturbance4 ,this is the time when a girl commences to worry about her complexion4 ,she frets and becomes anxious about the little spots appearing upon her face4 ,if she has not the proper home advice1 but hears all sorts of tales and sees all sorts of things in the school or shop1 she soon resorts to the drug stores for a face lotion1 powder or cream4 ,she may have been told by an older girl that1 8,no1 ,i never had anything but a good complexion2 you'd better take something for yours1 ,i would10 and much more of this kind of foolish advice4 ,some girls go through the period of development without any marked change in their complexion2 others1 especially brunettes1 will have a 8broken-out-face10 a hot and oily skin and not infrequently pimples on some part of their bodies4 ,girls of nervous temperament are apt to have more or less of a spotted complexion during the first few years of menstruation4 ,in all these girls it is more of a sign of good health than otherwise1 and if the skin had been left alone1which it has not1 because you have never known the truth1the quack advertisements of 8face creams10 8skin food10 8complexion wafers10 and all the other skin poisons and complexion-destroyers1 would never have been put out to swindle girls and women4 ,pimples most frequently show on the shoulders and upper arms1 and unless the girl knows that these really mean a splendid complexion when she has grown to full womanhood1 she worries herself to a point that makes her little life miserable4 ,this is the point in a girl's life where she starts in to ruin her complexion forever4 ,she commences to fill in the openings made to let out the fatty and other substances in her skin1 by powdering1 applying some ointment which keeps these pores closed1 or goes to bed with greasy or other injurious 8skin foods0 upon her face4 ,in fact1 she does just what in the end will give her a pasty complexion instead of a clear one4 ,of course she will later on take to the rouge and powder puffs and have to keep them in constant use until her skin becomes like that of a dried codfish4 ,please remember that what you need during the first years of your menstrual life is to allow full freedom for the skin to get rid of all the material your state is producing behind the outer skin4 ,this material must come away if the skin is to be a clear and healthy one4 ,banking up1 stopping this sweating process of the glands of the body1 will ruin your complexion in time4 ,you would not attempt to clean a room by sweeping all the dust under the carpet and not expect this dust to be always flying up and making the room dusty and ill-smelling8 ,but you do about the same thing when you do not let all the dirt and dust come away through the spring cleaning of the skin4 ,the period of your development is the ,springtime of your life1 and you must expect all kinds of disagreeable feelings and little annoyances to occur during this period4 ,each month1 just as your menses are coming on1 you will find little pimples or some redness on your face1 nose or shoulders2 perhaps on the arms4 ,you should not want to go to dances or entertainments at these times2 in fact you should not2 but at no time during your growth into full womanhood should you wear gowns with short sleeves and low necks4 ,for even between the menstrual periods there will be some indications upon the face or skin which tell the story4 ,to hide these little eruptions or redness of the skin you have to apply powder to the neck1 shoulders and arms4 ,what are the consequences8 ,the perspiration1 due to the heat of the room and the exercise of dancing1 keeps the inflammation active under the powder and may cause such pimples that the scars are left forever4 ,and right here is where you 8catch cold40 ,drafts1 sleeping by an open window or going from a warm room to a colder one do not give you a cold4 ,you may catch cold by doing these things1 but the cause is something which has brought about a too rapid loss of heat from the body2 such as any wrong way of clothing or underclothing yourself2 low-neck dresses for winter2 or covering the skin with powder or enamel1 through which the perspiration cannot have free play and keep the temperature of the body equal2 these are the reasons you 8catch cold40 ,those girls you occasionally see with a pitted skin on their faces and shoulders1 are those who in all probability prevented the natural grease and other substances from getting out when they were in the first two or three years of their development4 ,they have generally brought about this disagreeable complexion by attempting to dress as full-grown women and covering face1 shoulders and backs with some kind of lotion1 powder or cream4 ,the girl who was noted for her fine1 soft and smooth skin when she was eight or ten years of age1 commences at puberty to have pimples and blackheads on her nose1 cheeks and forehead4 ,this being about the time she takes more notice of herself and others around her1 these little facial blotches worry her4 ,it is the opening of a new life and much attention is given dress1 hair and complexion2 to her whole appearance4 ,she brushes and fixes her hair with great care2 tries all sorts of experiments4 ,she probably uses the brush of her older sister or one belonging to some of her family1 or more frequently it is the common one at school or in the store4 ,she does not intentionally use a dirty brush1 nor will she use one which she has the least suspicion has been used by the unclean4 ,but even the brush of her mother or sister carries germs that at this time do much injury to her skin and scalp1 because the skin of the forehead is affected by the germs which get to the scalp4 ,this germ is one which is always to be found in the glands of any person's scalp or hairy portions of the body4 ,these glands are known as the sebaceous glands4 ,they are the ones which secrete the oily substance that is necessary for the health of the skin and hair4 ,you have enough of the oily substances in your own hair and skin1 and it is usually free from germs at this time if you have used only ,,your ,,own ,,brush4 ,but the moment you use a brush belonging to some older and full-grown woman you carry to your own scalp these germs4 ,if some of the other germs which are sometimes found upon common brushes get onto your scalp1 there is another trouble for you to combatdandruff4 ,in the first case you simply add oily stuff to your own supply1 get over-much of the oil2 in the other case1 dandruff is piled thick with the fatty material and then comes scalp disease4 ,this may go on for some time and not noticeably affect you1 but it may cause in a few weeks a certain form of eczema about the forehead and even the face4 ,this is a very important matter for all girls and young women to remember4 ,i have shown you that on the approach and for some time after puberty1 all the tiny glands of the skin are enlarged and very active1 so you can now see that there are hundreds of thousands of little holes for the germs to get into1 and they do so from the brushes you are in the habit of usingthat is1 most of you4 ,when these germs have located themselves upon the scalp1 they soon commence to show the fact by giving you a muddy complexion4 ,sometimes you will be accused of not thoroughly washing your face1 so marked is the line around your forehead and neck made by the attack of these germs4 ,when the openings of the glands begin to gape1 the effect is not agreeable to you nor to your friends4 ,the pimples commence to irritate you on account of the increase of the oily substance1 and soon you see that little creamy spot1 then you or a misguided friend will squeeze it out4 ,often before this harmful procedure is gone through with1 a formation of a little cocoon-like body is formed and then you have blackheads4 ,this is not all dirt as is generally supposed1 but a little cylinder filled with fatty stuff1 water and some dirt from the skin4 ,if these blackheads keep coming and if you go on squeezing them1 if you insist upon covering the pimples with powder or lotion1 a real skin disease will be the result4 ,this skin disease we call acne1 and it is a difficult and trying one to cure4 ,never mind all those fetching advertisements in the papers which claim to cure acne in a few applications4 ,don't touch such harmful stuff4 ,all these advertised lotions simply ,,cover ,,up the symptoms of the disease1 drive it further into the skin1 and when you finally have to go to a reputable doctor1 too much harm has been done for him to save you from being marked for life4 ,never trifle with advertised cures1 go to a well-known doctor1 or if you cannot afford to pay a specialist's price1 seek one at the outdoor clinics4 ,there you will receive the same kind and careful treatment you would if you went to his office in an automobile of your own4 ,what are we to do to keep from having all these disagreeable pimples and their after-effects8 ,prevent them4 ,you understand2 not cure1 but prevention2 for ,i want to put you all in a position to keep from having any trouble which needs a ,,cure in the medical sense4 ,the first thing to do is to look out for your scalp as soon as you recognize the approach of puberty and for ever after4 ,i do not mean that even a little girl should ever have her scalp neglected1 but that you must1 as soon as your menstrual time comes1 ,,never use any other brush than your own and this must be a new one4 ,no matter how old you are1 get a new brush every few months and guard it as you would your jewels or your most precious gift4 ,you should consider a brush for the hair as sacred as the one for your teeth4 ,you surely would not think of brushing your teeth with any old toothbrush which happened to come along2 neither should you use any other hairbrush but your own4 ,and all this is such a simple matter1 for whatever you do1 wherever you go1 whether you attend school1 work in an office or store1 you can easily carry with you your own hairbrush as you do your own toothbrush4 ,of course the same rule applies to comb1 soap and towel4 ,the habit some girls have of brushing and combing each other's hair is all very well if only your brush is used upon your hair1 and only upon your hair4 ,as a rule girls take one brush and go over each other's scalps1 thereby contaminating all the scalps2 carrying oily matter from head to head4 ,the scalp of a blonde-haired girl is not kept in good condition by the same quality or amount of secretions that a brunette requires2 a woman's scalp that has been neglected will carry to a young woman's sensitive skin germs which will affect her scalp and complexion1 but would not probably affect a middle-aged person4 ,so let no person use your brush and allow no other person's brush used upon you4 ,the habit of promiscuously kissing each other that some girls at this age of puberty so often have1 is a dangerous habit1 because you may have placed upon your lips some of the germs which cause pimples1 and then comes trouble again4 ,anyway1 a girl is too young to be kissed and not old enough to kisswithout danger to herself4 ,there are many1 many more little things which cause a poor complexion in the girl and grown woman4 ,first of all is that curse of ,american girls and womenconstipationthe result of our false and injurious prudery4 ,i warned you we should have to refer to it again and again1 for it is a condition that enters into the cause of many women's illnesses1 indispositions1 tumors1 open sores1 headaches and other avoidable troubles4 ,allowing any of the cast-off material of the stomach and intestines to remain in the lower bowel will most positively cause a muddy and pimpled skin4 ,the reason is plain4 ,this material is dead stuff meant to be cast off out of the body ,,every day4 ,if it remains in the body it putrefies1 forms gases and acids1 which are ,r,eabsorbed into your system1 taken up by the blood1 which later on shows it in your face4 ,just think of it6 ,would you like to go around with all the signs of putrid matter being kept in your body8 ,of course not2 yet you will outwardly show these signs if you do not keep your lower bowels always cleaned4 ,what is the best way to keep the bowels clean8 ,regularity in your habits of toilet is1 first of all1 the most important factor4 ,drinking plenty of wateryou see ,i am at it againin the morning1 is next in importance4 ,your breakfast food can be so arranged that the bowels will empty themselves every morning if the habit and water drinking have been carefully looked after4 ,fruit1 stewed or ripe1 should be taken every morning4 ,little or no meat is needed nor advisable for you in the morning4 ,cerealsreal cereals1 not the sawdust and roasted bread crust stuffare good for the morning meal4 ,plain1 old-fashioned oatmeal comes first1 then hominy or similar cereals4 ,the idea that buckwheat or other breakfast cakes cause pimples is all nonsense4 ,the same is true about syrups1 butter or sugar4 ,if you have flushed your stomach and intestines with water and fruit1 you may eat all the cakes and sugar you wish4 ,candy does not affect your complexion1 neither do cakes1 pie1 nor any sweets which ,,are ,,pure ,,and ,,eaten ,,at ,,the ,,proper ,,time4 ,all our grandmothers' scare and advice about eating candy and other sweets is due to the fact that they ,,do harm in this way4 ,candy and other sweets are too often eaten between meals or early in the morning and thus cause a lack of appetite4 ,with this loss of appetite1 the body cannot get its nourishing and bowel-cleansing food4 ,it is the loss of this nourishing food and the natural result of having nothing in the intestines which will wash these food tracts out1 that does all the harm4 ,it is living unnaturally to be in such a condition1 and any unnatural way of living will bring about unhealth1 and this will be shown by a poor and nasty-looking complexion1 a hot skin and flabby flesh4 ,young women and girls often need sugar in their system and at certain times will crave it4 ,other girls will crave something sourpickles1 for instance4 ,,eat ,,pickles ,,and ,,candy ,,if ,,you ,,crave ,,them4 ,but do not forget that first you must have had a breakfast free from these substances1 have thoroughly emptied your bowels and had a good noon meal4 ,after these good meals you may eat candy1 pickles1 ice cream1 any old thing,,if ,,the ,,materials ,,are ,,pure4 ,this is a very important matter4 ,eat nothing that has been exposed to the dust of the streets or any filthy place4 ,we shall have something to say about 8dope0 drops and candies in which are brandies1 cocaine and other drugs4 ,the girl who goes out at noon and buys for her luncheon claires1 doughnuts1 cream puffs and other pastry1 and makes a meal of this stuff1 is positively going to have a pasty complexion1 be constantly constipated and unable to do her full amount of workschool1 house or office4 ,if she has taken some good soup and eaten a little nourishing food1 ,,then the pastry will not harm her2 perhaps do her good4 ,i have said nothing about eggs or fish4 ,i think most of you are glad of it and know the reason4 ,i have had thousands of girls and young women under my charge and but few of them could eat either eggs or fish2 and to many1 milk was positively repulsive4 ,at certain times these kinds of foods are nauseating to many girls and young women4 ,now and then a young woman will take an egg or a few bites of fish1 but all through the active portion of her life she abhors a diet of such eatables4 ,it is a case of ,jack ,spratt could eat no pie1 ,his wife could eat no fish2 ,so betwixt them both ,each had a separate dish4 ,do not force yourself to eat anything that you do not enjoy4 ,in good health the body will know what it needs4 ,if it needs sugar1 it will give you a craving for sugar2 if you need beef1 you will want it4 ,the cravings for sweets or sours only become unnatural when they are eaten to the exclusion of nourishing food4 ,if you have the ,,habit of eating sweets in the morning1 you must break this habit4 ,you got into the habit because you gave in to a natural desire at an unnatural time4 ,if you are hungry before going to bed1 then you will benefit by taking some nourishing and easily-digested food4 ,eating at night will ,,not injure your complexion4 ,it is eating indigestible food which ruins the complexion1 and before bedtime you are too apt to eat those foods which lie all night in your stomach and ferment there4 ,this is a sure and quick way to bring on a muddy complexion and a red nose4 ,never drink milk with beef1 pork or ham4 ,but ,i do not fear this tough combination in girls or women1 only it is best that you should know that such a combination will remain all night in your stomach and let you know it for a few days afterwards4 ,i know that the majority of girls and women who are out in the selfish world1 including schoolgirls1 do not fully realize the great importance of proper food eaten at the proper time1 that is1 the bearing it has upon all their growing powers4 ,if they did1 we should not have all these patent medicines for skin1 womb1 stomach1 headaches1 and all the other doped stuff1 which is ruining hundreds of thousands of those who ought to be the mothers of the future generation4 ,i say ought to be1 because unless you girls take hold at once and absorb these facts ,i have been telling you1 and shall tell you1 many1 yes1 most of you1 will weep throughout a childless life4 ,what shall ,i apply to my face8 ,nothing but water and pure soap4 ,does not washing the face in water1 hot or cold1 bring on wrinkles8 ,no1 never4 ,did you ever see wrinkles upon your canary bird8 ,don't you have a bath ready for her every morning8 ,what made the ,greek and ,roman maidens so beautiful in face1 figure and complexion8 ,baths1 bathing their bodies and faces daily4 ,but they used facial ointments1 powders and creams4 ,no1 not the pure maidens or matrons2 only the other kind4 ,if a woman1 when young1 was foolish or ignorant enough to use powder or grease upon her face and kept it up1 when she gets to be thirty-five or so1 she has to resort to enameling her face4 ,if now she allowed her face to be thoroughly washed by either cold or warm water1 she would have wrinkles1 big1 deep ones4 ,she1 of course1 does not believe in water on the face and will tell you so2 she has her reason4 ,and the reason is this3 ,for years she has been maltreating her skin by stopping the natural oil from leaving the skin glands4 ,as time went on she has applied the necessary powdernecessary to herthen had to use some form of facial cream1 increasing the amount year by year4 ,there has been no opportunity for the skin to stretch or relax1 to work out its secretions1 it remains almost immovable2 consequently ridges and furrows form1 and a good wash brings out the wrinkles and also her secret4 ,there is no harm in having the face massaged when you are tired1 dusty and your skin feels tightly stretched4 ,but having it gently rubbed and washed with cold water1 then protected by a veil as you go out into the fresh air1 is an entirely different matter from having it rubbed by one who fills in the open pores with a 8facial cream0 or some 8beautifier40 ,there is only one beautifier1 and that is ,,good ,,health4 ,and once you get it you do not have to apply it every day4 ,it will stand the rain and the sun1 will defy heat and salt sprays1 will be always by your side wherever you go and not put you in the awful condition of a well-known professional beauty ,i once knew4 ,this woman was traveling and became ill4 ,i was sent for1 but when ,i arrived ,i was told by the maid that ,madame could not see me at that hour4 ,now the case was important2 the woman was suffering and in danger4 ,never mind1 she simply ,,could ,,not see me for several hours4 ,she went into a delirium and was finally taken to a hospital for mental invalids4 ,why wouldn't she see me8 ,because her fine and notorious complexion had been left behind1 and as the suffering from her pain had caused her to freely perspire1 the perspiration had opened up all her wrinkles and furrows4 ,unless the skin of the whole body is freely washed1 the neglect will show on the complexion4 ,a bath every morning is the secret of many bright and rosy cheeks4 ,if you are so situated that you cannot get a tub bath every morning1 winter and summer1 you certainly can get a big sponge and have a sponge bath in your room4 ,let the water run down your spine1 especially down the small of your back4 ,give your face a good dose of cold water4 ,a shower on the face will keep wrinkles away until late in life4 ,do not stop your bathing because you are unwell1 only use warm or tepid water4 ,i know that many girls are told not to even put their hands in cold water while menstruating4 ,this is utter nonsense1 if the girl is otherwise in good health4 ,these old ideas have done much harm and kept girls from benefiting themselves by helping ,nature in all her growths4 ,cold baths will keep your flesh firm and hard2 will take off fat if you are too fat1 and put on flesh if you are too lean4 ,like everything in nature1 the improvement comes slowly1 but it certainly comes4 ,you should commence the baths in the summer and keep them up so that when the cold weather comes the change is not very noticeable4 ,of course all this should be done in a warm room and you should have a warm rug to stand upon4 ,be sure to take a good rub with a coarse towel4 ,this brings us to some simple form of exercise you can do at this time which will help the bowels to empty themselves by toning the muscles of the abdomenthe stomach1 you call it4 ,these exercises consist in bending the body from your waist several times1 then swinging from side to side4 ,you do this with your feet close together and with straightened knees4 ,bend forwards and downwards1 touching the floor with the tips of your fingers without bending the knees4 ,keep it up until you can do it without effort4 ,then swing your body from side to side1 twisting and turning from the hips4 ,nothing will give you a more graceful figure than these forms of movements4 ,keep up this exercise all through your active life1 and with all the other advice ,i have and shall give you1 you can be attractive even when the gray hairs have made their appearance4 ,it is not the purpose of these ,chats to advise you in purely medical matters1 that is to tell you what to do in illness and what medicines to take4 ,the purpose of these talks is to put you in possession of knowledge that will bring you to full womanhood1 a strong1 healthy woman to whom marriage and children will be a state of happiness for both husband and wife1 or to a state of content1 if you choose 8single blessedness40 ,but in the matter of constipation1 ,i think it will do no harm to tell you that1 if you will take once a week a tablespoonful of ,,sodium ,,phosphate1 you will be benefited4 ,this sodium phosphate should be taken before breakfast in a full glass of water4 ,what about thin hair1 split hairs1 that dead-feeling hair8 ,if this condition is found in the young woman1 it is ninety-nine times out of a hundred her own fault1 or due to her ignorance of what the scalp and hair need4 ,it is because she has piled a lot of dead and often diseased hair on top of her healthy and growing hair4 ,put a bunch of dead matter upon live and growing matter and what is the result8 ,death1 decay6 ,most of the fashions in hair and dress originate in those whose lives and age compel some artificial aid to attract attention4 ,these foolish and freakish fashions are not for the young woman to adopt4 ,take the fashion of long trains1 for example4 ,the women of ,paris seldom walk1 they go about in automobiles or carriages4 ,now1 sitting in these open conveyances it attracts attention to have a long folding train wrapped around the sitting figure and pulled up at the ankles to show a dainty slipper and silken hosiery4 ,don't you see how ridiculous it is for a good young woman who has to walk to her daily work or school1 to try to copy a fashion which is intended for an entirely different class of women8 ,yet1 when trains were the fashion1 you all did it4 ,you are doing about the same foolish thing now with your head4 ,head-gearthat is the best name for itis intended for women whose age has depleted them of much hair or whose lives have been such that their hair has become dead through bleaching or other injurious processesthese women must repair the damage4 ,wigs are too evident1 so these women buy the hair which once graced or disgraced some other women1 and pile it up in freakish forms and call it the latest fashion4 ,the ,american girl and young woman immediately follow 8the fashion10 and then you ask me what to do for thin hair and dead tresses6 ,now1 if you keep up this heathenish fashion of ruining your own beautiful hair1 many of you will not only have thin hair1 but become ,,baldheaded4 ,false hair1 such as 8puffs10 8rats10 frames1 pads1 8transformations10 8pin curls0 and 8mouse-traps10 will do the trick for you4 ,even the artificial means used to puff out the natural hair will ultimately injure itinjure it beyond repair4 ,all the false hair with the appliances to keep it in shape1 press on the scalp and impede the circulation of the blood1 and the part of the scalp it should supply will wither and lose all life4 ,the result of any pressure on the blood vessels of the scalp is that the roots of the hair become impoverished1 and in time the hair gets so thin and weak that it drops out4 ,very little1 if any1 air can get to the scalp when you are 8following the fashion10 which is just now in vogue4 ,stop this injurious and ridiculous wearing of false puffs1 pads1 and especially 8transformations40 ,i have seen schoolgirls and typists with enough rigging of false hair and rusty wires upon their heads to give a strong man a constant headache and make him bald in a month4 ,your hair also falls out rapidly and constantly1 but as you are blessed at the start with more luxuriant and more active growth in the scalp1 it takes longer for the injury to show4 ,but it is only a matter of time1 not effect4 ,then there is another matter which you do not fully realizeall good and worthy men detest this ill-smelling and dead hair you pile upon your heads4 ,you lose all your fresh appearance1 all the looks of a maiden1 all the proofs of innocence4 ,your complexion takes on the hue of the dead hair1 and when the fashion passes you can never get back the shining1 luxuriant tresses men so dearly admire4 ,men and youths may not have told you these truths1 but way down in their hearts they will pick a girl for a wife or sweetheart who has not the smell of a dead ,chinaman1 or whose hair has been the abiding place for an old 8mouse-trap0 and left the mousy odors4 ,the best way to insure a good head of hair is to wear it loose and free1 without any artificial aids and appliances4 ,of course you may dress it any way it pleases you1 but aside from pins it should never have any other pressure upon it4 ,the hair should be washed frequently in water with a little powdered borax1 but remember you wash the hair only to clean the scalp1 nothing should be applied to the hair directly4 ,there is another fashion which has made many a girl suffer from headaches1 thinned her hair and injured her complexion4 ,this is the wearing of tight collars1 neck bands1 and those torturing things with points you wear stuck right up under the ears4 ,i forget now what you call them1 and ,i won't tell you what ,i call them1 for it would not sound nice to polite ears4 ,but if you keep on wearing them a man will be able to say almost anything without you being able to hear him2 for you will be deaf4 ,the reason these tight collars do so much injury is that they compress the arteries and veins of the neck1 which at this part of the body are near the surface4 ,they are large1 full-blooded vessels and bring the blood to and return it from brain and scalp4 ,i have known girls to faint simply from the compression due to tight collars or bands around the neck4 ,they will almost invariably cause headaches1 and every one of you know of the great relief you derive from taking them off and putting on a loose wrap or dressing sack4 ,i have known women to suffer violent pains in the head1 then dizziness and final collapse1 by preventing a free circulation through the brain4 ,the same blood vessels supply the skin1 and when these are stopped from nourishing the skin what do you get8 ,a poor1 pale and finally diseased skin1 a starved face4 ,,chapter ,v ,,nerves ,,and ,,the ,,nervous ,,girl ,it seems that not anything worth while in this world is gained without self-fighting and worry4 ,the great things that are accomplished by men and women are accomplished only through will power1 determination and concentration4 ,determination is different from will power in this respect3 one may be determined to do a thing but find that she has not the nervous power to carry out the determination4 ,in other words1 the nervous force is really the basis of all will power4 ,so all the factors which go to make for self-control and concentration upon whatever you have decided upon doing1 are dependent upon a good and perfectly adjusted nervous system4 ,without a powerful nervous force we would be nothing but eating and sleeping animals4 ,the men and women who do not know from any personal feeling that there is a tremendous force in a trained nervous system are those who do nothing for the world's progress2 they only eat1 sleep and automatically labor4 ,many who have plenty of nervous force but do not know what it means1 and hence cannot control it and use it for the benefit of man and themselves1 are those who throw it away in dissipations1 abnormal excitement and riotous living4 ,to have a highly-sensitive nervous organization is the greatest gift a woman can have2 but unless she early knows its value and how to train it1 it becomes a curse to her4 ,it will run away with all her impulsesgood and badand finally separate her from her womanly stability4 ,we hear a lot about 8nervous women and girls20 and that the condition is increasing1 due to our rapid way of living and all the pressure of trying to keep up the pace civilization has set4 ,i have lived most of my life among nervous women and girls1 and have come to the conclusion that the truth of the matter is1 that instead of being due to our rapid pace of living and working1 it is really due to the fact that most girls have never been taught to train and control their nervous forces4 ,these nervous girls and women are mostly those who are not over-nervous1 but simply never have developed a nervous force that could keep pace with their physical and emotional activities4 ,it is for this reason that their impulses get the better of them1 they crave abnormal excitements1 want to be on the go constantly1 cannot be contented with simple and honorable home duties and finally merge into a condition where they have to seek the doctor or else go to a sanitarium4 ,now just consider for a moment some simple facts4 ,you are taught1 early in life1 the necessity of exercising in order to develop and be able to control your muscles4 ,you are told to 8learn to control your temper10 but unless you are in perfect physical condition1 with plenty of reserve nervous force1 which is really will force1 to use when you need it most1 how are you to 8control your temper08 ,i have tried to tell you how necessary it is that all your organs should be kept in perfect condition by knowing what they are1 and what they do and how to help them in doing the right thing4 ,your teachers are constantly at you to make you train your memory1 to keep your mind upon your studies1 or else your employer is nagging you to pay more attention to what you are told4 ,and how many of you try to do all this and do not succeed6 8,train every faculty1 build up your abilities20 do this or don't do that2 always something is dinned into your ears about what you should do to improve yourself4 ,but the one force1 ,,the power which is at the bottom of every impulse or act1 nerve activity1 is left unmentioned as a force to be trained first1 always and last of all the forces in your body4 8,she has such a bad temper0 is a remark we hear time after time4 8,if she would only learn to control her outbreaks2 don't get out of temper10 and similar expressions are only too frequently heard in homes and at schooleverywhere4 ,no wonder the helpless girl becomes discouraged and disgusted when she is scolded for petty explosions which she would gladly know how to stop4 ,a girl without a temper doesn't amount to much4 ,it is a proper attitude of revolt against personal wrong or injustice4 ,it is the birthright of every normal woman4 ,it belongs to her protective instincts4 ,and what is temper8 ,just the explosion of a highly nervous temperament4 ,explosion1 mind you1 not a decent expression of righteous indignation4 ,the difference is that one is uncontrolled nervous force1 the other is the same expression of nervous force held in check1 governed by long training and handled for some forthright deeds4 ,it is the preserving of this nervous force so as to be able to utilize it for some valuable work1 that makes the difference between wasted energy and useless efforts and applied energy with useful results4 ,the nervous force in woman1 including the brain1 is the last to become fully developed1 but it should be the first to be considered in your training4 ,it means self-control1 and there is no better evidence of good birth1 well-poised personality and perfect physical health1 than control over one's impulses and words4 ,a girl with these qualities will soon get a husband who will be kept as a husband4 ,to get self-control you must go at it in the same systematic manner as you do physical exercise4 ,in this latter matter schools and clubs have gymnasiums for you2 there are athletic games played under instructors of physical culture who teach you how to exercise along lines which will give you good bodily health2 but the apparatus you need first of all1 that for building and strengthening the nervous system and the nervous energy which goes into your sex development1 are merely mentioned in some homes and schools and in some others never mentioned4 ,you need a perfectly-balanced nervous organization and one under your complete control before you can benefit from any physical exercise4 8,but10 you say1 8is not physical exercise a means of building up the nervous organization80 ,no1 only indirectly4 ,this body of ours1 the mere bones1 muscles and organs1 is only the frame of our human machine1 just as the steel body and wheels are that of an automobile4 ,no matter how strong that frame is1 no matter what fine material has gone into the workmanship1 it is absolutely worthless unless the motor which is to drive it is powerful enough to send it along with ease1 and moreover be one which can readily and safely always run under control4 ,the motor that runs our bodies is the nervous system1 and if you have a body so highly developed as to fatigue the nervous motor1 then a nervous breakdown is certain to occur4 ,if you have a nervous mechanism too strong for the body it will run away with you and then we have another kind of 8nervous breakdown0hysteria1 melancholy1 insomnia1 drug habit or worse4 ,the nervous affections of girls and women are generally due to one of these causes ,i have outlinedunevenness in bodily development or nervous development4 ,they should balance each other1 work together and both become tired and demand rest at the same time4 ,the secretions of the skin1 kidneys1 liver and other internal organs are controlled through the nervous system4 ,so are the functions of the womb1 ovaries and even the heart4 ,why does your heart beat so rapidly after a fright or great excitement8 ,because your nervous motor is running beyond your control4 ,why does a girl's monthly occurrence sometimes stop after a great fright or skip a period or two during some deep grief or emotional experience8 ,because the nervous organization of the whole body was put to excessive work and then had to stop for a rest4 ,having become temporarily exhausted the fine little nerve endings in the organs cannot do their allotted work1 hence no secretions can push their way out of the closed cells4 ,for these nerve fibers open and close the cells which secrete the materials that should be cast off at regular intervals4 ,not being able to do so the girl becomes 8tired10 has headaches1 feels 8all out of sorts40 ,then she thinks something is wrong with her1 her good mother gives her 8tonics0 or 8blood medicine0 and she is told to exercise4 ,what she needs instead of exercise or medicines is rest2 as much rest and food as she can contentedly stand4 ,the only exercise such a condition calls for is deep breathing and this more to furnish fresh blood which the full lungs give1 than for the exercise itself4 ,if we could conveniently get fresh air into the lungs by some method other than breathing it1 it would be better still1 for even the effort of deep breathing calls for some use of the nervous force1 and the least possible disturbance of this force1 the quicker will the girl or woman recover her full nervous strength4 ,if you have exercised beyond the power of the nervous system to send full impulses to the skin so that it will pour out its poisons1 some of this poison remains in the body and sets up a condition known as auto-intoxication1 which only means self-poisoning4 ,all kinds of nervous affections arise from this state4 ,the same conditions are brought about by the poisons of the liver1 if the delicate nerves of this big sewer of the body are too tired to open up all the little ducts and channels and let out the poisons which the liver has taken up from the blood in your body4 ,and so we might go on into more physiology1 showing you that much of the nervousness among girls comes from over-exercise1 instead of under-exercise4 ,probably more of the trouble arises from exercising at wrong times2 at times when the nervous organization has all it can do to regulate sex growth and development of the girl4 ,at this time to pull out a lot of nervous power to make muscles work and grow big1 must result in some nervous organ being deprived of its needed nerve cell assistance4 ,in these facts lies the cause for so many nervous wrecks in young women and wives4 ,nature gives the nervous system of all growing girls constant and concentrating work to do4 ,it has to take care of all the new organs of secretions1 see that the breasts are fully supplied with cells ready to do their work when motherhood approaches1 fit its tiny but powerful nerve endings to the womb and ovaries1 develop the brain and instincts along proper and healthful lines1 furnish power to the million cells of the scalp and skin1 watch that the stomach pours out a proper amount of digestive fluid at a time when the girl has a craving for strange 8eatables0 such as slate pencils or gum arabic4 ,the hard and enduring efforts of the nervous system to keep the girl well balanced in her thoughts all the time she is undergoing these necessary changes1 should never be overlooked4 ,no girl between fourteen and twenty years of age should ever train for physical contests or any form of athletic competition4 ,a girl should train for her future workmotherhoodand for this wonderful and glorious contest for bringing onto the earth the best possible men and women1 she must have the highest form of nervous development1 with all that this implies4 ,the best way to help all this effort of ,nature to give you a nervous system which will stay by you when the worries and trials of life come1 is never to over-exercise at any time1 and not to exercise at all for a few days before and a few days after your periods4 ,this is the time when your body needs all the reserve power for one purpose4 ,how can ,i tell when ,i need rest instead of exercise8 ,the best sign is when you think that you ought to exercise but don't feel like making the effort4 ,many1 many a girl has become a nervous wreck because someone forced her to exercise when she needed to be quiet and at rest4 ,never exercise unless the anticipation of the play or game is a pleasure to you4 ,when you get into that state of mind such as1 8,oh1 ,i don't feel like making the effort2 ,i'd rather sit here and read1 or talk0if you feel like that1 if you have to make up your mind that you must exercise1 but it is difficult to find any pleasure in the thing you are thinking of doing2 don't try to do it4 ,if you make determined efforts to do any physical work that is distasteful to you1 if you work by the clock1 then you are injuring yourself every minute you are at it4 ,you are drawing upon your nervous capital1 not upon the interest4 ,this is the secret of all exercise1 brain or muscle3 work must be done upon saved-up interest1 not upon the capital4 ,if you use the capital1 it only means for the body what it would mean for the pursebankruptcysure and certain failure4 ,any physical effort which leaves you feeling worse than when you started1 is injuring you4 ,this does not mean a good physically tired feeling1 one in which your cheeks are aglow1 when you feel elated at what you have done1 when a cold shower bath feels good instead of making you shiver and covered with 8gooseflesh10 but that feeling of complete exhaustion1 pale cheeks1 a feeling of shivering if cold baths are mentioned and a longing for something to drink that will brace you up4 ,when this latter state is yours1 you have over-exercised or else exercised at a time when your nervous motor needed a rest1 not disturbance4 ,you sometimes hear it said1 8,why1 she is the last girl in the world ,i thought would ever get nervous troubles4 ,she is the best girl on the team,oh6 you ought to see her muscles40 ,yes1 but you should also see those worn-out nerve cells4 ,misdirected ambition1 a forgetfulness that she had only a certain amount of nervous power1 an excitement which blinded her to her real condition2 these were the factors which made her drive her motor far beyond its powers4 ,finally there was no more nervous energy to move her over-developed muscles without fatigue1 and fatigue has its own poisons which penetrate the whole body and then comes a collapse4 ,this was the cause for this 8strong girl's0 nervous breakdown4 ,no girl is strong1 or ever will be as a woman1 whose body and muscles have been developed at the expense of her nervous system4 ,the really strong girl is one who has power saved up1 and when a time of great stress or work comes1 has this extra power to put out and not become a nervous bankrupt4 ,exercise1 like your daily work1 should always be a pleasure instead of boresome labor4 ,only by doing things in this state of mind can you ever be successful4 ,the drilling1 training and developing of the willpowers of self-controlmust be a constant part of a girl's self-education4 ,it is all very well to tell a girl to 8use will power10 but before she is blamed for the lack of control1 it would be only just to her to find out just how much of this power she has to use4 ,will power depends upon a perfect nervous system4 ,the reason one cannot call to a will power to stop an evil or disagreeable habit1 is because the habit has temporarily destroyed1 or rather put to sleep1 the power to will4 ,if there has not been1 in the beginning1 a well-drilled self-controlor will powerhow can you expect a girl who flies off into an unreasonable temper1 to immediately control this temper and keep it under control8 ,the will power is the rudder of life2 the steering control over our human ship as it voyages on the seas of life4 ,now if a ship should go to sea without a rudder1 you know just what would happen to it4 ,if it goes on a voyage with a weak rudder1 or one which has been damaged and not repaired1 the best sailor in the world cannot keep it off the rocks when a storm comes4 ,it is just so with our brains and bodies2 they must be controlled by a strong and well-attached rudder1 the will power4 ,with such a power one can accomplish wonders2 in fact1 everything that seems marvelous to us in man's work has been due to perfect steering of right impulses into new harbors where an unsteady human ship would be wrecked in trying to pass the hidden rocks and roaring reefs4 ,,chapter ,,vi ,,how ,,to ,,get ,,will ,,power ,but just what must one do to get this power8 ,i have told you something about the body's poisons1 how they accumulate in the body and cause illness and nervousness4 ,the first thing to do is to see that your body is free and kept free from these poisons1 for if not kept free1 the nerve cells become affected and then a perfect will power cannot be developed4 ,here are a few practical things to do and not to do to keep the nerve cells so you can develop them4 ,sleep always alone4 ,sleeping with another person is unsanitary4 ,the skin needs to get rid of its natural poisons and not take up any from another person4 ,you would not think of breathing the air coming from another person's lungs4 ,well1 when you are under the sheets and blankets with another person1 you can breathe through your skin the poisons coming from this companion4 ,if you have to sleep in a room with another person1 you must have your own little bed4 ,sleep with as little covering over you as is possible with comfort2 window1 of course1 as ,i have warned you1 wide open at the top4 ,you can become accustomed to lighter clothing by gradual methods of reducing the number of blankets4 ,no underclothing of a material to absorb and retain perspiration should ever be worn4 ,if you keep over your skin any clothing which has become moist through perspiration it will injure your chances of keeping a good nervous force4 ,take off such clothing before it becomes soggy and cold4 ,then take a sponge bath and put on dry clothing4 ,personally1 ,i believe that porous linen underwear is the best for all growing girlsyes1 and for all women4 ,it allows a free evaporation of perspiration1 and so prevents a more or less sodden garment from remaining in contact with the skin1 which so frequently happens with those who wear woolen underclothing4 ,there is another harmful effect that woolen underclothing is apt to have2 the beginning of a rheumatic condition which later on in life becomes a painful chronic rheumatism4 ,in girls who find that in winter linen underwear is too cold1 a thin silk vest may be worn over the linen4 ,this will be found to constitute a thoroughly warm1 comfortable and safe form of underwear4 ,don't try to keep awake either by mental effort or that injurious resort of drinking coffee4 ,sleepiness should not be overcome as a rule1 as it is ,nature's signal to stop work4 ,in fact1 ,nature has signals for almost all dangers1 and when we can read these signals all goes well along the road of life4 ,if efforts are continued in spite of the fatigue1 the quality of the work is poor and the exhaustion to your nervous system will be difficult to repair4 ,high-school girls and college young women constantly make this error and then wonder why they become so nervous at times4 ,all sorts of things are tried to keep awake in order to study or dance1 when if they would go to bed and rest1 they could accomplish far more in half the time in the morning with little or no fatigue4 ,for remember1 ,i am trying to tell you how to get a grip upon that will power4 ,yet there are times when sleepiness and fatigue must be overcome without resort to stimulants which will surely weaken any will power you may have been cultivating4 ,these times are when you have to watch by the bedside of an ill mother or someone dear to you4 ,when so situated1 go to an open window and take deep breathing exercises4 ,this will burn up the fatigue poisons in your body1 for remember these poisons are gathering in everyone's body when real fatigue commences4 ,morning is the time for all mental work if you are a high-school girl or college woman4 ,the afternoon should be devoted to some form of mild exercise and for 8low pressure0 work4 ,shouting1 yelling and all extra efforts of the throat muscles will aid in exhausting your nervous powers1 to say nothing about the unpleasant and unladylike attitude it places you in before the public4 ,a low1 sweet voice1 even under excitement1 is a sound pleasing to all men and a certain mark of good birth4 ,i need not repeat the facts about the advertised 8remedies0 for this trouble or that pain1 for ,i have already warned you to let all drugs and 8cures0 alone as you would snakes4 ,but there are some drinks that you should be warned against4 ,never take those soda water fountain's stuff advertised as 8nerve tonics40 ,don't believe the young man or boy at the fountain when he says that 8,dopie0 or 8,bromo ,tonic10 8,phosphate for your ,nerves10 or 8,dockine0 and other similar rotten stuff will do you good and that they contain no drugs or injurious materials4 ,don't believe a word of all these misleading statements4 ,the boy or young man is there to sell1 not to understand or care about your condition4 ,if such stomach wash and nerve destroyers contain no drugs1 then what good are they8 ,if they contain nothing but plain water charged with carbonic acid gas1 then why not take a glass of plain seltzer or soda water8 ,supposing1 for example1 these advertised drinks do not contain harmful drugsmost of them do1 howeverthey are colored and sweetened4 ,what are they colored with8 ,what is the chemical that sweetens them8 ,if you really knew you would be unable to keep them down1 the knowledge of how they are concocted would be revolting to you4 ,these restrictions do not apply to pure soda water and pure syrups1 but even here you must be careful to drink only those which are pure1 and only the very best drug stores are safe in this matter4 ,most of the bottled drinks sold at five cents should be thrown into the sewers1 and how many diseased lips do you think have touched the glasses passed around at the circus and similar shows8 ,those glasses containing dyed water1 a little chemical acid and glucose1 with second-hand lemon peel to give the appearance of lemonade1 are almost as dangerous as the fangs of a viper4 ,don't dress in a loud and gaudy manner unless you wish to attract the men of loud and loose principles4 ,the personal appearance of a girl makes a great difference in the manner she will be received4 ,to dress in good taste and with every appearance of neatness and modesty1 is essential for the girl who seeks employment or respectful attentions4 ,good taste in dressing simply means that a man can say that the girl was well dressed1 but to save his life he could not tell just what she had on for clothes or hat4 ,the dressing of the feet is1 perhaps1 the first thing a refined and cultivated man looks at4 ,to be well and sensibly shod is always a hall mark of good birth and cultivation4 ,the girl who wears thin shoes on a wet and cold day1 the young woman who displays high-heeled shoes and thin silk stockings on a winter's day1 may attract attention1 but not respect4 ,a man well knows that if a girl wears a fur coat and low shoes on the street1 she will1 as a wife1 be continually complaining of her indisposition1 pains and altogether make his home a place to flee4 ,no man wants a nervous and complaining woman around his house1 and a girl who thinks she is attractive on the street is not the girl who will be attractive in a home4 ,that is1 one who dresses her feet for the street in the manner they should be dressed for the house or ballroom proclaims herself a careless girl and one who is not liable to take care of her health4 ,you have heard much about psychotherapy1 suggestion and a lot about certain ,movements in church circles4 ,these all proclaim an infallible remedy for 8,nerves40 ,there is a lot of nonsense written about this mental method of healing the nervous and soul-sick person1 and1 on the other hand1 there has been a lot of scoffing at it4 ,there is more in the drilling of our inner selves than the old-time physician has been willing to admit2 he has so long been accustomed to consider woman a physical being of bones1 flesh and whims1 that her real inner self has been sadly neglected4 ,the consequence has been that a number of well-meaning and progressive men have taken up the treatment of troubles without understanding just what relation the gross bodily organs and nerve cells bear to this inner self which we all possess4 ,i shall not bother you with any digression1 but get at once to what you can do for yourselves in this matter4 ,start early to get inside of yourself2 to get at that self which so bothers you at times2 the thing which makes you 8feel out of sorts10 that 8getting mad with yourself20 the feeling that you have not said or done just what you would like to have said or done1 but which some uncontrollable impulse1 at the moment1 made you say and do4 ,this is the inner self1 but it belongs to all the other parts of your body2 is really the best part of you and will be able to put out the best in you when you have it under full control4 ,take a half hour at the time when you can be alone and see into yourself4 ,search well your heart and learn just what you said or did that you regret4 ,then find out what caused you to be disagreeable1 what has put you out with your better self4 ,write these thoughts and desires down where you can privately refer to them daily4 ,take the first mistake and stick to the memory of it so that1 when the impulse comes to repeat it1 you can check yourself4 ,drilling yourself this way1 you will soon learn to conquer this one fault4 ,then start in the same way at another fault and conquer that4 ,don't try to exercise all the powers of resistance at once1 for if you do1 there are bound to be failures and too many of these make for discouragement1 and then follows recklessness4 ,you would not try to develop a weak back by going from an apparatus meant to develop the thighs to another one for the chest1 and then back again for a few moments to that for strengthening the back muscles4 ,no1 you stick to the work which develops the back until you have made some decided progress4 ,the inner self1 the will1 the good girl in you1 should be developed in the same way4 ,you want to go to a dance or perhaps the theater1 8all the other girls are going10 but your mother has good and sufficient reasons for not allowing you to go4 ,now1 instead of arguing1 complaining and going off to your room in a huff1 saying unkind words to your good mother1 words which tear and gnaw at her heart1 speak to that inner self2 call it out2 go to your room and peer straight into the trouble with ,,you1 not that wrong idea that the fault is with your mother4 ,think deeply of this fact2 she is your mother1 nothing that would add to your pleasure or advantage would she deprive you ofnot for an instant4 ,but as your mother she knows what is best for you2 she may know something about the other girls1 about the kind of youths going with them1 she may know something about your health that is not advisable to tell you just at the moment4 ,in your room think all these matters over2 throw out that unreasonable and false self1 and when you have done so1 go to your mother1 ask her forgiveness and also beg her to tell you her reasons4 ,now that your inner self is in control1 your mother will tell you confidentially her reasons1 and when they are clear to you1 the happiness which follows is far beyond any mere physical pleasure you can ever obtain4 ,after a few times of this self-drilling1 the obedience to your mother will be a second nature4 ,still more fights with your inner self will have to follow1 but one by one1 you can conquer the enemy4 ,never become discouraged if you fail1 just keep on trying and in the end you will win over all evil and wrong impulses4 ,a girl who disobeys her mother or father is the girl who as a wife will be divorced4 ,the girl who wants to 8be a good ,indian0 will1 when a woman1 be a repulsive savage4 ,the girl who deceives her mother will deceive her husband4 ,all men know this fact4 ,remember that marriage does not make a happy woman1 but a woman has it in her power to make marriage a happiness4 ,the most reasonable woman will have hours of being unreasonable1 but these are the hours you should be unreasonable with yourself while searching for reasons4 ,,chapter ,,vii ,,how ,,to ,,keep ,,attractive ,the jolly1 vivacious girl2 the girl who is happy obeying her mother1 contented in school or laughs while at work1 is really a girl in whom every organ and function are properly adjusted4 ,in other words1 a girl who is in perfect health is a joy to herself and makes life worth living for others4 ,it is the same idea that ,i have given you regarding a perfectly-running machineevery part works harmoniously and there is no complaining1 no feeling of harshness in life1 no grinding or jolting as you go along4 ,and almost every girl who starts right can be put in this desired state and keep herself so4 ,but she must understand that it is in her own power to have red cheeks1 happy thoughts1 vivacity1 pleasure in what she does1 and to bring sunshine around her4 ,doctors cannot do this for her2 patent medicines1 8blood purifiers10 8eye drops10 tonics and complexion foods2 all and everything of the kind will injure her and prevent any chance of obtaining and keeping perfect health4 ,i purposely repeat this statement1 for we are now going to chat in detail about many of those little things you can do for yourself better than any doctoreven the most experienced4 ,of course you cannot do all this until you understand the causes for those many little annoyances which come to every growing girl4 ,your complexion1 your spirits1 your physical form1 all depend upon what the body takes in and what it casts off4 ,this cannot too often be repeated to you1 because the simple facts are so easily understood when clearly explained and are under the control of every girl4 ,it does make all the difference between a vivacious and attractive girl and one who is constantly complaining1 who knows that her eyes and complexion are dull2 how life appears to each2 all the difference between happiness and misery4 ,and this difference arises from the methods of eating1 thinking1 and getting rid of the body's poisons4 ,one girl does not know that all the cells in her body are constantly undergoing decay and new ones taking their places and so neglects to give her body such food1 rest and exercise as will keep the body's outgo and input evenly balanced4 ,the other girl with red cheeks and laughing mouth1 has this evenly balanced condition during the body's constant changes4 ,too many of you have been taught to neglect the proper feeding process of the body2 you have been allowed to eat proper food at improper times and not been shown the necessity of doing just the opposite4 ,but few of you have ever considered the true relation of food to health and happiness2 the fruit market has been neglected1 the butcher disinterestedly visited and the greengrocer never considered as an aid to perfect health4 ,what have taken their places8 ,patent medicines1 all sorts of poisonous 8tonics10 drugs1 fake foods and hundreds of dangerous concoctions to replace the want of real nourishment4 ,instead of nourishing the body and of course the nerves1 these fake foods directly injure every cell in the body4 ,they cannot keep up the repair daily needed in every tissue of the human system4 ,do not forget that every day your body undergoes more or less wear4 ,in the growing girl it is unstable1 sometimes through much worry or fear the wear is greater than the ability to repair1 and unless the girl realizes this and at once commences to give extra aid to the repairing process by eating proper food and plenty of it1 resting from all physical and mental excitement1 she will reach full womanhood with some little nerve or tissue lacking its full strength2 and she can never repair the damage4 ,each day1 too1 by radiation1 her body loses a large amount of heat1 and for the perfect health of man or woman the temperature of the body must be maintained4 ,now this loss of heat has to be replaced constantly4 ,it is only done through the regular supply of fuel4 ,this fuel is the food we eat4 ,it must be of such a nature as to burn up in the body and give out its heat4 ,this fuelfoodhas to be supplied according to the amount of work the body and brains do every dayyes1 every hour4 ,if you have to keep the furnace going to warm your rooms1 you well know that it must have good coal about so often2 according to the amount of work it is compelled to do4 ,you also know that putting clinkers1 shavings or newspapers into the furnace will not give your rooms the needed heat4 ,well1 it is just so with your body4 ,also1 if you allow the clinkers from good coal to remain in the bottom of the furnace1 soon there comes a time when no amount of coal will give out the full strength of its heat1 and finally the fire goes out4 ,again1 it is just the same thing that happens if you keep the clinkers of your fuel in your body2 the waste products left over after the food has given out its heat4 ,you know how these waste products are eliminated from your bodythrough the bowels1 skin1 kidneys1 lungs and liver4 ,now1 please remember this most important fact,food1 including water1 is for the sole purpose of supplying heat to the body and to replace the dead cells which are constantly being cast off in every portion of your body4 ,this decay and birth of the cells of the body goes on in every living thing4 ,when the decay is greater than the repair1 some part of your body is dying4 ,in such a condition1 you are a fit subject for the attack of some of the many disease germs all around us4 ,it may be a serious one or merely some form of skin disease2 then goes1 whack6 your good complexion4 ,a girl needs more food and at more frequent intervals than a grown woman because1 besides keeping up the heat of the body she also has to supply the material for the growing process active in her4 ,the building up of the frame1 the full strength of the nerves1 the hard working blood1 must all be supplied by a surplus of food1 for if she eats only enough to supply heat1 the other needs of her body will suffer and finally become useless4 ,now1 girls1 eat plenty of food that will aid in all your growth4 ,i know some girls who think it is unladylike to have a good appetite2 ,i have treated girls who were really starving themselves because they dreaded to become fat1 and ,i have seen others whose appetite was unnatural because they denied themselves proper food4 ,it is not necessary for me to say any more about the kind of foods to eat2 we have already gone into this matter1 but remember this1 that the degree of energy essentially depends on the nutritiveness of the food you do eat4 ,not a single gland in the body can do its proper work unless it is supplied with its proper stimulant2 and this stimulant is food4 ,if you wish to have a soft1 smooth and attractive skin1 you must always keep in your mind the fact that it is the glands of the skin that exist for this very purpose4 ,i have said something to you about perspiration and exercise1 but beside this activity of the glands1 produced by exercise1 there is constantly an 8insensible perspiration0 taking place in every girl4 ,this unnoticeable perspiration amounts daily to about two pints of watery fluid4 ,think of it6 ,a quart of water leaving your body through the skin every twenty-four hours and in such a way that you do not notice it4 ,you see now why ,i have laid so much stress upon the statement that you should drink plenty of water1 and why the average ,american girl suffers from poor complexion and constipation4 ,fat is poured out in this 8insensible perspiration40 ,even the finger tips will secrete it4 ,if the palm of the hand is cleansed with soap and then with ether2 held in the sunlight and observed with a magnifying glass1 you can see little bubbles arising which immediately evaporate1 leaving tiny drops of an oily substancefat4 ,if this is soand it is a scientific factis not the statement ,i made to you1 that water will help reduce fat instead of making it1 easily understood8 ,but1 then1 why will drinking water also make fat8 ,because it simply balances the physiological functions1 brings about a proper chemical action throughout the whole body and in doing this enables the tissues to extract from your food the elements which go to make up fat1 flesh and blood4 ,in other words1 give the body its needed supply of water1 air1 food and exercise1 and it will take care of itselfgive you the amount of fat you really need or take off the fat you do not need4 ,all these matters of controlling the action of the skin are dependent upon special nerves2 nerves which have nothing to do but look after the health of the skin4 ,these are the nerves which close or open the pores to let out the 8insensible perspiration10 which keep the body temperature equal under all conditions of exposure and rest1 which allow the blood to get through the tiny arteries and veins of the cheeks and make for a good or poor complexion4 ,don't listen to those who tell you that your unsatisfactory complexion is due to 8bad blood40 ,there is really no such state in the good girl or woman as 8bad blood40 ,affections of the skin such as a muddy complexion1 greasy looking skin1 rough skin1 pimples and blotches are not signs that there is something the matter with your blood4 ,generally speaking these are signs of some faulty adjustment between nerves and blood vessels1 sweat glands and the tiny muscles of the skin4 ,these muscles of the skin are very delicate and sensitive muscles and easily prevented from working properly4 ,when they do not do their work constantly and correctly1 what happens8 ,wrinkles of course1 then a tightening of the skin which prevents the outpour of the 8insensible perspiration0 and the escape of the oily substance4 ,this latter1 remaining1 causes the greasy skin2 the tiny wrinkles keep behind the outer skin some of the inward dirt1 and then you have the muddy complexion4 ,another way you can see the action of these tiny skin muscles is in 8gooseflesh40 8,gooseflesh0 is due to the general contraction of these tiny skin muscles4 ,they contract into the little pin-head knobs which make the peculiar appearance we call 8gooseflesh40 ,the contracting or expanding of these skin muscles is absolutely necessary for good health1 as the action regulates secretion and excretion and also protects the body from sudden temperature changes4 ,when you jump into bed and find the sheets cold1 you immediately have 8gooseflesh20 that is1 the skin muscles close at once all the pores4 ,if they did not do this1 the contact with the cold sheets would reduce your body temperature and disturb the even working of the organs of the body4 ,the reason fear and shock also bring on 8gooseflesh0 is due to the nerves of the skin being affected by the fright you have had1 and so the muscles become uncontrollable4 ,this causes the skin muscles to contract and its bunches are the 8gooseflesh0 skin4 ,very often a fright or emotion is the cause for a bad complexion1 for as you can readily understand1 all the functions of the skin being disturbed1 it cannot remain healthy4 ,it is for this reason you should avoid all thoughts1 reading or association which will affect the nervous system1 if you wish to have a clear and beautiful complexion4 ,proper clothing has1 of course1 a great deal to do with preventing a disturbance of the nerves of the skin and through these nerves the muscles of the skin4 ,i have warned you about keeping next to your skin any garment soggy with human excretions or secretionsperspiration with its fats and acidsand explained why a daily bath is the only way to be certain of a healthy and hence a beautiful skin4 ,the changing of underwear by a set rulesuch as once or twice a week1 is barbarous4 ,undergarments should be changed as often as they have absorbed any unusual amount of perspiration4 ,always change after exercise1 and in the warm weather every day4 ,it is not absolutely necessary that clothing worn during a morning's walk should be sent to the laundry1 but it should be hung where it can dry1 then put where the fresh air will go through its meshes4 ,this being thoroughly done it may be used during the next form of exercise4 ,but if it has been soaked with perspiration1 then it should be thoroughly washed and dried in the air4 ,carelessness in these matters is often the cause of skin diseases2 especially of that distressing affection1 eczema4 ,woolen undergarments are a prolific source of mischief in most of these cases4 ,in fact1 as ,i have suggested to you1 woolen underwear is not the thing for a girl or young woman to wear if she wishes a clear and attractive complexion4 ,even in cold weather you can wear silk1 muslin1 or linen undergarments next the skin4 ,be certain to have them white1 or at least undyed1 and have no colored ribbons where they can come in contact with the skin4 ,outside of these garments you may wear woolen articles required for warmth4 ,another little matter of importance to the growing girlfur1 velvet or cloth collars of garments worn tightly about the neck1 the lining of gloves1 dyed stockings and even the lining of your hats1 sometimes will start a skin trouble which will be difficult to cure4 ,your sleeping garments should be as loose as possibleespecially around the neck4 ,they should be such that you can turn ,,in them and not have them stick to your body when turning4 ,turning while in bed is one of ,nature's ways of giving all the skin covering your body a chance to get air and allow of the evaporation of that 8insensible perspiration40 ,now1 if a certain part of your body has gotten rid of its inside poisonthe region over the liver1 for exampleand in turning over to give that portion access to air1 your garment simply sticks and goes with it1 don't you see that you are sleeping with a soggy bit of clothing pasted right over the region which needs fresh air and a chance to evaporate its perspiration8 ,during warm weather you will find bran baths not only very soothing1 but giving to the skin a very smooth and pleasing appearance4 ,about four pounds of bran to a bathtub of water is what you need4 ,there is an annoying skin affection1 though not a disease1 which may embarrass the most careful girl4 ,it is a summer occurrence and ,i dare say that most of you know something about it4 ,i refer to 8prickly heat10 a most annoying thing to the girl who wishes to enjoy her summer outing and has to keep away from the bathing beach and the pleasures of all her friends4 ,this trouble may come out suddenly all over the body1 sometimes it is confined to certain large areas1 more often to the arms and shoulders4 ,it is accompanied by excessive sweating and intolerable itching1 prickling and tingling4 ,you all can avoid this distressing condition4 ,light clothes1 linen undergarments of the flimsiest material1 the use of plenty of water taken inwardly1 the avoidance of hot rooms1 no exercise1 such as dancing or tennis1 are the things to remember4 ,do not put anything on the skin such as powder1 ointment or ammonia4 ,bathe in cool water2 put into your bath a handful of bicarbonate of soda4 ,take every morning a full glass of some saline water or a glass of water in which you have dissolved a lithia tablet4 ,eat plenty of green vegetables and fresh fruit1 but avoid spiced food4 ,rice1 chicken1 mutton1 will not harm you1 but pork1 ham and underdone beef at this time should be let alone4 ,at night you should sponge your body with vinegar and water4 ,whatever affects the skin affects also the hair and nails1 for those are only extensions of the skin4 ,i have told you about the hair in a former chat which leaves little more to say2 for after you understand the secret of beautygood healthcommon-sense will dictate to you what to do4 ,however1 here are a few more things about the care of the hair4 ,in trying to get rid of some of the dirt which the hair will collect1 don't use a fine tooth comb4 ,this cannot1 without difficulty and injury1 be made to take hold of the dirt1 because when it does1 it will pull so severely as to pull out or break the hairs4 ,this is especially true of the thick hair of the brunette4 ,use a comb having large smooth teeth4 ,your brush should have bristles moderately stiff and the tufts of these bristles should be well set apart4 ,never use a brush whose bristles are short and closely set4 ,pearline is a good washing material in which to soak your combs and brushes4 ,in drying the brush be certain to place it in the sun1 bristles down1 so that the water drains off1 instead of soaking into the back of the brush4 ,if this latter condition is allowed1 the moist roots of the bristles will take up all the dirt and germs floating around and they will then be transferred to your scalp4 ,the number of times the hair should be washed depends entirely upon the amount of dirt or dust it has accumulated4 ,but the rule is1 as ,i have mentioned1 that washing the hair should be done only when there is an accumulation of dust1 for the more it is let alone the better hair you will have4 ,in washing the hair you remove the protective oil and this leaves the hair dry and brittle4 ,all applications of oil or vaseline to the hair are injurious2 man cannot make the artificial take the place of the natural4 ,if you must use any oil1 then use pure olive oil4 ,never attempt to remove superfluous hair from the face or neck4 ,if you do attempt it yourself1 unsightly pimples will follow1 perhaps ugly sores and in the end the roots will be left to send out larger and darker hairs4 ,if troubled with superfluous hairs1 go to a reputable physician4 ,he can1 by a method of using an electric needle1 rid you of your trouble4 ,never go to an advertising man or woman for this trouble or any other4 ,never try to beat ,natureyou cannot do it4 ,help her and she will do the best thing for you4 ,i make this remark because ,i know many girls who have straight hair want to have curly hair and try all kinds of methods to get curls4 ,curly hair is due to the angle it is placed in the skin of the scalp4 ,straight hair simply means that the hair grows straight up from the scalp4 ,you can now see that it is impossible to get a natural curly hair from straight roots4 ,if you persist in this useless process1 you are bound to disturb the roots and ultimately find that your hair is dropping out4 ,then there is another fact to remember4 ,the face and skin develop along their own lines and in harmony with each other4 ,a face and complexion made for straight hair will always look somewhat out of proportion surrounded by artificially curled hair4 ,this gives the head and face that 8frowsy0 look so often seen in the most carefully dressed girl4 ,such a girl thinks she has beaten ,nature4 ,but it is the other way about4 ,don't use a ,,hair nailbrush4 ,in doing so you are liable to tear the tender skin at the base of the nails and open opportunities for germs4 ,a rubber nail brush is the very best to use4 ,such a brush is generally called a flesh brush4 ,it is a rubber plate with many cylindrical projections rising from one of its flat surfaces4 ,these little rubber projections do better work than the bristles of a hairbrush and get in under the nail better and do much less damage4 ,the flesh brush1 beside cleaning the nails well1 and with little damage to the surrounding skin1 is itself easily washed and sterilized4 ,the finger nails ought to be trimmed so that they may fulfill their function of supporting and protecting the pulp of the fingers4 ,they therefore ought to be cut in a line corresponding to1 but slightly behind1 the round of the finger tip4 ,they should not be cut too close at the corners4 ,the manicure method of cutting the nails close at the corners and trimming them too close1 is injurious and dangerous4 ,the finger nails can pick up more poisonous germs than any other portion of the body1 and unless they are protected by their tough surroundings they will carry into the body deadly microbes4 ,never use a knife or nail scissors in pushing back the skin lying at the base of the nails4 ,gently work it back by the tip of your fingers or thumb4 ,,chapter ,,viii ,,some ,,don',,ts ,don't think because you hear so much about the dangerous germs to be found everywhere1 that you are certain to catch some horrible disease4 ,true1 there is great danger in ignorantly living around these germs1 but the danger is mostly in ignorance and not in the fact that the disease microbes are always with us4 ,the old idea that such germs as those of scarlet fever1 typhoid1 smallpox1 etc41 could be carried from the ill to the well on clothing1 books1 toys and other similar articles is not strictly true4 ,equally true is it that these kinds of germs do not stay long upon walls of rooms1 floors or ceilings4 ,they will stay and breed diseases in such places if they are allowed to thrive under moist and dark conditions4 ,sunlight and fresh air are deadly enemies to all germs except those of venereal origin4 ,if a smallpox patient has been confined to a room and after being taken away the room is fumigated and then closed1 the chances are that the smallpox germssome of themwill remain and increase4 ,hence1 to again occupy this room would be dangerous4 ,but if1 instead of fumigating the room1 if all the windows were open2 if every corner and floor could receive the rays of the sun for many days2 the last germ in the room would have to give up the ghost4 ,don't think that fumigating and washing clothes or other articles which have come in contact with a diseased person make for absolute safety4 ,but do remember that ,,sunlight and fresh air are deadly enemies to most disease germs4 ,there are certain diseases which are carried around by persons in whom you would never suspect danger4 ,typhoid germs1 for example1 may be carried around in the intestines of a person who is in apparent health4 ,now everywhere this person lives1 or uses the toilet1 the germs are deposited1 and if they happen to get into the drinking waterwells or streamsor are carried by the flies' legs to the food or milk1 you run great risks of getting typhoid fever4 ,those germs of two horrible diseases which are to be found upon public toilet articles1 public drinking cups1 upon the leaves of common booksin fact everywhere man or woman is to be found1 are not killed by sunlight or fresh air4 ,this subject should be thoroughly understood by every young woman1 but it is of too great importance to be dealt with here in a few paragraphs4 ,the breath of a consumptive patient will not carry directly the germs of consumption to another person4 ,oh1 ,i know that is what many of you have been taught1 but we are dealing with the facts as they are known up to this very year of #aiaa4 ,it has long been the general idea that disease germs were carried from one person or thing to another person or thing4 ,now this is not strictly true4 ,all germs increase and thrive in moist and dark conditions4 ,the throat of a consumptive patient is one of these conditions4 ,the germs are sent out into the air of the room in surrounding moisture4 ,they land somewhere2 on the tablecloth1 in the carpet1 or hide in a dark corner4 ,in these places they dry and become dustgerm-laden dust4 ,now stir up this dust and then you have the germs free to rush into the healthy lungs around them1 and then a person runs great risk of contracting consumption4 ,don't stir up a room by dusting if that room has been occupied by a diseased person4 ,don't wash the walls or floor of such a room and then close it1 unless you want to go into the business of breeding germs4 ,knock out the windows of such a roomopen it up for the sun's rays to penetrate and kill off the enemy4 ,take all carpets out and put them where nothing but ,,dry air and sunshine can get at them4 ,do the same thing with every movable object in the room4 ,don't do anything but just this with rooms where scarlet fever1 diphtheria1 measles1 whooping cough and other contagious diseases have been running their courses4 ,i spoke to you about the hands being the greatest carriers of infection4 ,they even carry around the germs of typhoid fever4 ,they have been found on the cleanliest person's hands after using public toilets4 ,on the fingers1 especially4 ,you are safer in kissing a person who has consumption1 than you are in wetting your finger to turn over the pages of a book that has been thumbed by scores of other persons4 ,a person may have the cleanest habits possible yet be a menace to others as well as to herself4 ,i watched the other day a pair of young schoolgirls trying on each other's gloves4 ,up to the lips would go a finger or two1 then these moist fingers would clasp the glove fingers and in this way work the glove onto the hand4 ,you all know the process better than ,i can describe it to you4 ,now supposing that the girl who owned the glove had rang the bell or turned the knob at the residence of a friend who was ill with1 say1 consumption1 to inquire how the friend was4 ,don't you see that it was more than probable that nurse1 maid or mother had conveyed moist germs of the disease to the knob or bell push1 that the germs dried but had not been long enough in the sun to be killed1 and this girl's glove picked these germs up and then you transferred them to your lips8 ,dried germs which only wanted the moisture of your lips to become virulently active4 ,don't wet your fingers in trying on glovesnew or old4 ,don't hang on to car straps with ungloved hands4 ,the same don't applies to water closet chains1 handles and many other germ holders you will call to your mind4 ,in studying the peculiar habits of girls ,i watched a group in the 8,ladies' ,hat ,rooms0 at a theater4 ,they took off their hats after much pulling of big daggersbeg pardon1 ,i mean pinsout of hair and hats4 ,these dagpins1 were all promiscuously laid upon a dressing table covered with germ-laden dust1 only to be taken up again and held in the mouth4 ,the same process was gone through with when they again put on their hats4 ,pin after pin was taken from the germ cloth and put in their mouths while they adjusted the angle of their hats4 8,say1 ,mame1 lend me a pin1 will you8 ,i've lost one40 ,so out of ,mame's mouth came a pin1 which was immediately put between the lips of the borrowing girl4 ,nasty8 ,of course4 ,dangerous8 ,frightfully so4 ,don't put pencils1 pins1 string and other articles of the kind in your mouths4 ,why does a girl think her mouth is a receptacle for every little thing she wants to use temporarily8 ,i have seen girls and women step up to a box office and as soon as the ticket seller had shoved1 with his bare hands1 a ticket or two through the window1 immediately grab up those dangerous pieces of pasteboard and place them between their lips and hold them there until they passed down the line and into the theater4 ,and probably1 shortly after1 this same girl or woman will wonder why she has pimples1 blotches or sore lips4 ,then she goes to the druggist for a 8face balm0 which temporarily hides the real trouble4 ,finally she has to go to the doctor1 who finds it is too late to repair all the damage done through ignorance1 foolishness and the drug4 ,don't use arsenic in any form for your complexion or to give your face a plump appearance4 ,some of you will tell me of a girl you know who has a nice plump face from the use of arsenic wafers4 8,she used #8to be a fright'2 skinny in the face and deep lines40 ,certainly1 and now she looks to be in good health4 ,but she is not2 she is in a dangerous state1 and if she keeps up the arsenic poisoning she will discover this fact4 ,in the girl1 arsenic will produce a certain amount of fatunnatural of coursein hollows or pits which full growth will attend to if the girl will have patience4 ,poisoning herself with arsenic makes fat in the undeveloped tissues of the face4 ,this gives her a plump appearance4 ,so will plenty of whisky1 and in about the same manner4 ,but if the fatness was confined only to the cheeks the harm would not be so great1 but like whisky again1 it puts fat around delicate internal tissues4 ,a girl who has plump cheeks from the use of arsenic has also a 8plumpness0 around her kidneys1 fat over her growing ovaries and inmeshing the tiny cells of the liver4 ,fatty degeneration of these organs takes place for which there is no remedy4 ,all headache medicines1 such as antipyrine1 are not only dangerous1 but will ruin a complexion2 bring out pimples as certain as the sun shines4 ,the habitual taking of any kind of bromide1 bromo seltzer1 bromo quinine1 and all the other kinds of advertised 8sedatives10 will cause a peculiar rash not only upon the face1 but upon the body4 ,i frequently see girls in shops1 stores and even in the high schools1 whose faces tell the story of some kind of drug-store 8treatment40 ,lately there has come to the surface another kind of patent medicine fake which is apt to fool the most open-eyed4 ,this is one you all know of but not about4 ,it is that kind of advertisement which has nothing to sell4 ,it purports to be the outpouring of some philanthropist's heart who wishes to do something for his suffering fellow manor generally woman4 ,you see he has nothing to selldon't want your money1 simply spend thousands of dollars every week to tell you how to get rid of 8that uncomfortable feeling40 ,no matter what is the troublehouse care1 worry over your studies or 8who sent me ,,that valentine0liver1 womb or rheumatismit is all the same2 just go to your druggist and get these simple remedies and take as directed4 ,then follows the prescription4 ,at first glance1 yes1 at the second1 you or your mother read the simple home remedies such as tinct4 rhubarb1 olive oil1 simple syrup1 extract of quassia1 etc41 and think that such a recipe must be harmless and certainly good4 ,the advertisement tells you just to get your druggist to fill the recipe4 ,well1 how can there be anything wrong with such harmless and free advice8 ,but you will see inserted among all these harmless and simple and well known remedies1 some such direction as 8two ounces of badum0 or 8tinct4 of fulum1 original package40 ,now you see the nigger in the woodpile4 ,the whole scheme is to get you to purchase the fake 8badum40 ,this is distributed among the druggists and when you go to pay the bill you find that the simple prescription is an expensive one4 ,the druggist tells you that the 8badum0 is a very expensive ingredient4 ,it probably costs the fakers a few cents and is simply sugar of milk or some equally harmless and legally allowed drug4 ,don't kiss anyone but your mother and father4 ,don't forget that flies are the most dangerous germ carriers we have1 and don't buy or eat anything which has been exposed to flies and street dust4 ,don't have any pity for the flies or insectskill them4 ,don't be a giggling girl4 ,the practice of giggling will certainly develop those tiny skin muscles in a way to make your face show some kind of distortion4 ,i remember a young girl who was brought to me for her constant habit of giggling4 ,it had grown into a habit and really looked like a case of hysteria4 ,but because ,i told her mother it was a form of hysteria and should be treated as such1 she became offended and took the girl elsewhere4 ,i saw the girl1 or rather woman1 when she was twenty-four years of age1 and recognized her by the peculiar conformation of her face4 ,it was the face of a girl giggler4 ,her facial muscles had become so developed by her uncontrolled girlish habit that nothing could be done for her4 ,i felt sorry for the young woman1 for she had grown to be a very charming and estimable one1 who was constantly embarrassed by an expression of contempt4 ,good laughter1 a hilariousness which has for its cause a real sense of humor1 is beneficial to everyone4 ,such expression of humor gives motility to the face and develops a pleasing appearance4 ,don't swagger around in public nor attempt to thrust yourself forward4 ,a modest girl will not let herself become prominent in public places4 ,dressing1 acting or talking in any way to attract undue attention will soon ruin a girl's reputation4 ,now a little about corsets and a good1 supple and attractive figure4 ,i have no objections to corsets as corsets1 but every physician knows only too well that a growing girl is injured beyond repair if she1 at the developing stage of her life1 compresses in any manner the internal organs4 ,really1 this is about all there is to this corset question4 ,if a woman has reached full development with lungs1 ovaries1 kidneys1 all the pelvic organs1 having had full play and room for their growth1 the proper wearing of corsets will not do her harm2 nay1 they will do more1 they will be a source of comfort to her4 ,moreover1 such a woman will not lace too tightly because always having had full play of her lungs and other internal organs1 she will be distressed if they are too tightly confinedtheir own needs and development send her warning when she has gone too far4 ,but it is sadly different with the young girl who has from fourteen years or even from sixteen years of age1 worn corsets made for the full-grown woman4 ,every inch of a girl's waist1 all the region of the pelvis and the upper portion of her body1 should be absolutely free from any pressure4 ,just take a little growing twig and tie a string around it4 ,next year you will see a deep constriction4 ,the following years you will notice that the twig does not grow well1 that the sap cannot run freely up1 that when it does blossom1 the blossoms are poorly nourished and lack the luster of its unconstricted companions4 ,dress so that there is no pressure upon the pelvis or around the lungs4 ,try1 when you have on one of these modern coats of armor now made for the fat or thin woman1 the deep breathing exercises ,i have recommended4 ,you cannot go through with the exercise4 ,oh1 but you say1 we take off those corsets when we take the exercises4 ,certainly1 but when you gird yourself up again and squeeze1 punch and groan while getting into one of those 8can't sit down0 things1 you are undoing all the good the exercises have done4 ,let your clothes hang from the shoulders4 ,shoulders were made to carry weights1 the waist and the pelvis to carry and protect the greatest force in naturethe power of motherhood4 ,if you knew that when you grew to full development you would have to be a carrier of wood or water upon your shoulders1 that this would have to be your career1 would you go to work and place some constriction or in some way injure the growth of your shouldersdo something which would prevent you from doing what you were born to do8 ,of course not4 ,well then1 take the best care of your pelvis and their contents4 ,give them exercise1 shape1 health1 beauty1 by letting them grow unrestricted4 ,you may not know it2 but the condition of a woman's pelvis tells in her face4 ,broad hips mean happy and painless motherhood4 ,early constriction of the lungs and internal organs means a miserable existence for a woman1 married or single4 ,early constriction of the body means lack of bust development4 ,this means that your little baby1 so hungry for its mother's milk1 will have to be artificially fed4 ,don't think that there is any other way of a complete bust development than freedom of bodily action while growing4 ,those advertised things are more than useless2 they are positively injurious4 ,you can never have the ability to nurse your child if you fall into the hands of these criminal advertisers of 8bust developers40 ,i have now outlined in a cursory manner the main facts in modern physiology1 which1 if you allow to sink into your memory1 will make for a life of perfect health4 ,don't think that life is all pleasure or all misery4 ,it is a happy combination4 ,happy because all our burdens are for a purpose1 and when these purposes are well understood1 the burdens cease to be real burdens1 but tasks whose outcomes are seen to be pleasure4 ,the real reasons for so much misery among girls and women is unhealth1 rather than ill health4 ,unhealth is avoidable2 so is much ill health4 ,you all know how and why4 ,i have said little to you about morals because when a girl is in perfect health she is moral4 ,by this ,i mean1 perfect mental health1 as well as purely physical4 ,let me explain4 ,a girl has good physical health1 she is also in good mental health1 hence she is morally healthy4 ,she has had good home instructionbut not as thorough as is now neededand has no uncontrollable evil thoughts4 ,some of her companions tease her upon her moral nicety4 ,one day1 with a party1 she is persuaded to take a glass of beer or champagne4 ,she takes another4 ,well2 she loses her chastity4 ,bad girl1 immoral girl8 ,not a bit of it4 ,she fell because she was not ,,mentally in good health4 ,what injured her mentally8 ,the beer and champagne4 ,they will do it every time4 ,don't touch them6 ,don't think that you know more than your mother about what is best for you4 ,you don't4 ,sex ,knowledge judiciously imparted is the greatest insurance toward the development of sterling manhood and womanhood4 ,it is the duty of every man and woman to be informed upon the subject of sex and the care of the body4 ,it is a subject vitally important to every individual4 ,dr4 ,howard presents facts as they are1 and speaks from a knowledge gained through years of study and experience in the great hospitals of the world4 ,he shuns no details and presents a clear cut analysis of the wages of sin and ignorance4 ,a ,,full ,,list ,,of ,,dr4 ,,howard',s ,,books ,plain ,facts on ,sex ,hygiene ,confidential ,chats with ,boys ,confidential ,chats with ,girls 33 ,facts for the ,married 33 ,price #a4jj ,each1 ,descriptive ,leaflets ,free ,illustration ,the author says1 8,i want to make clear to the world through these books that right sex living is of as much1 if not more1 importance1 than right physical living2 that sex laws must be as well known and observed as those of eating1 sleeping1 and the general rules for bodily health40 ,,edward ,j4 ,,clode1 #aef
