seems to the writer that the slave songs of the ,south meet the demand more nearly than any other style of musical expression4 ,these children of bondage knew nothing of the methods of the schools1 yet1 in the harmonious blending and balancing of the four parts1 their vocalization is seldom equalled2 while their skill in translating heart throbs into the descriptive language of the diatonic scale is rarely surpassed4 ,no exhaustive analysis of the slave music is here attempted4 ,it is1 however1 a very rich mine to explore4 ,suffice to indicate its principal features1 namely these1 among others3 great simplicity1 but richness in the harmony1 coupled with much variety and originality of melody4 ,many of the 8resolutions0 of chords are abrupt and startling2 some of them doubtless contrary to the principles of 8thorough bass10 but all the more expressive on that account of the rough and rugged experiences which gave them birth4 ,while the tempo of these songs is largely common1 of those associated with social worship1 which1 having been produced by the sudden inspiration of religious fervor came forth spontaneously from one voice1 while the multitude caught the refrain and sang it out with a mighty chorus1 as the sound of many waters4 ,assuming the correctness of ,geo4 ,mac,donald's definition of a song1 as a composition in which the emotional largely overbalances the intellectual element1 their songs1 with their fullness of sentiment1 seem to realize the ideal4 ,a proper classification of these products of slavery should distinguish between those songs which groan with the agonies of a hard and cruel thralldom1 and those which palpitate with the joy of a present salvation1 and the hope of a glorious home of freedom beyond the grave4 ,among the selections belonging to the first of these divisions1 the minor key naturally predominates4 ,indeed1 this is the pitch upon which the majority of human hearts1 the world over1 are tuned4 ,a more exquisite minor 8songs in the night0 that came forth from the bitterest experiences of human woe4 ,it is related of a certain ,german nobleman that he had a number of wires stretched from turret to turret of his garden plots1 and even considerable farms1 are found4 ,a large number of these are owned by the freed people1 who constitute a majority in ,elizabeth ,city county1 and form a quasi-negro republic4 ,the blacks are courteous in their deportment toward the white citizens1 who in return display much kindness and good will4 ,one of the negroes1 when asked recently by a ,northern gentleman how his people were treated by the whites1 is reported to have said4 8,oh1 we are largely in the majority1 and the white man knows how to keep his place40 ,they seem willing that the white people should hold the important offices1 and the most cordial relations apparently exist between all classes4 ,not long after the recent election in ,virginia1 the black people about ,fortress ,monroe were observed to have created a demand for labor and given to the negro1 especially as he is the recognized laborer1 a grand opportunity for securing property4 ,a canvasser for a sewing machine company1 who has spent three years in ,eastern ,virginia1 testifies that the negroes have most of the money to be found in that country4 ,he says they are prompt in paying their instalments1 whereas when he sells to the poorer white people he fails to collect his money1 for the reason that they have none4 ,illustration ,the manners and customs of the people are still unique4 ,it is no uncommon thing to see a heifer or a steer harnessed to a cart and driven by one or two women who bring supplies to market4 ,possibly one-half of the conveyances seen by a visitor during a month's stay are of this fashion2 but the proprietors do not seem to be unhappy4 ,indeed1 a ,wall street broker1 who had been spending a month at the ,hygeia hotel1 and who was fond of the recreation afforded by visiting ,hampton on market days1 affirmed that these negroes were the happiest people he ever saw4 ,if twenty years of freedom can work such changes all over the land as are manifested here1 where emancipation first dawned1 the ,spokans are a small tribe and peacefully inclined1 ,congress has overlooked them1 while at the same time their country is being rapidly filled by white settlers and no adequate provision has been at school learn them off by heart4 ,it is astonishing what memories these ,chinese boys have1 and what a number of pages they will repeat straight off1 as fast as their tongues can go1 and hardly cotton clothes1 but in silks and satins of crimson1 green1 blue1 purples and various hues1 often with beautifully embroidered sleeves1 and jackets often lined with fur4 ,the children look particularly smart1 being adorned with gay caps and hats1 ornamented with gilt figures or ,chinese characters1 especially the ,chinese character which means 8happiness40 ,the ,chinese kites are very elaborate1 and are generally in the shape of some animal--a gigantic butterfly1 a centipede1 a bird1 a dragon1 etc42 and it is a fine sight to watch such a kite rise1 rise steadily in the still1 clear atmosphere1
