and cheap board near home1 which he could not find at a distance1 to say nothing of the expense of travel4 ,in view of the facts1 the ,conference recommended to the ,association to strengthen the college departments in ,atlanta and ,fisk1 and introduce college studies in ,talladega and ,straight as fast as the means and the fit student material would justify4 #b4 ,it was shown that more and better theological instruction is needed for the ,freedmen4 ,no race can rise without an intelligent ministry4 ,the young colored people of the present generation have had some education themselves and demand better educated ministers1 and the half million of children now in school will contemn religion or become infidels if left to the teachings of ignorant pulpits4 ,the ,association was asked by the ,conference to establish1 in addition to the ,theological ,department in ,howard ,university1 a ,theological ,seminary further ,south1 as soon as practicable1 and to sustain in efficiency the ,theological ,departments at ,talladega and ,straight4 #c4 ,the review of the ,industrial ,departments was interesting and satisfactory4 ,the farm at ,tougaloo produces largely the supply for boarding-house table1 and furnishes something for export--especially strawberries4 ,at ,talladega the land is neither extensive nor very fertile1 yet yields fairly4 ,both farms furnish labor for the boys1 and the boarding departments there1 as also in ,atlanta1 ,fisk and elsewhere1 give employment to the girls4 ,these ,industrial ,departments do not pay pecuniarily1 but they do pay in healthy mental and moral stamina1 and in a preparation for practical life4 ,in view1 however1 of the difficulty in management and marketing1 no additional farm industries were recommended4 #d4 ,much time was given and much interest manifested in discussing the grading and unifying of the normal and preparatory schools1 and their relations to the higher institutions4 ,our most effective work is felt to be here1 for in these schools we meet the wants of the masses directly1 and lay the foundations for what we do in the schools more advanced4 ,the results of the ,conference in this regard1 will1 we are persuaded1 secure greater unity and efficiency in object-lesson teaching1 normal training and practical business education1 as well as in giving more thorough preparation to those who may enter the elementary branches1 this course requires three terms each of ,united ,states history1 ,latin and algebra1 two each of philosophy and geometry1 one of physiology1 natural history and science of government and four terms of ,bible study4 ,a small one-story house neatly finished off with ,southern pine from ceiled roof to wainscoting is reserved for the primary school where1 in limited numbers1 children from the plantations around are permitted to attend4 ,the chief object here is to furnish a model school for our normal classes and a place where they can both learn by observation and practice for themselves under an experienced teacher who comes from the ,north expressly to have charge of this room4 ,besides this teacher our corps of instructors is seven strong1 including one who is almost exclusively music teacher4 ,something of external enlargement has fallen to the lot of ,tougaloo within a year past4 ,the beginning of the last winter term brought a crowd of students who1 with difficulty1 could find a lodging place among us1 owing to the lack of buildings4 ,the young men1 many of them1 had to make the best of the rudest sort of apartments4 ,it was when every available room apparently was full1 and shortly after a number of students had been sent away1 that the 8chapel10 with its second floor devoted to rooms for twenty-eight young men1 took fire and burned to the ground4 ,this building1 never even in its best days a very commodious1 convenient1 or cheery place1 was the best we had1 excepting1 perhaps1 the 8mansion40 ,on the first floor were a low-walled chapel-room1 serving the purposes of school-room1 assembly-room and church1 and two small recitation-rooms4 ,in one of these was kept the small library of the institution4 ,this library embraced sets of the ,new ,american ,cyclopdia and the ,family ,library1 some #cjj or more ,sunday-school books1 a few miscellaneous volumes--the gifts of individuals--and a considerable collection of ,congressional books1 reports1 etc41 sent to the ,normal ,department from ,washington4 ,the greater part of this incipient library was saved4 ,the sets above mentioned1 however1 which our students boarding and laundry departments of the school4 ,it had rooms for thirty-two young women4 ,it was proposed to enlarge it by adding another story to the long two-story structure already on the ground1 and also a three-story wing1 furnishing in all accommodations for seventy-two girls1 besides containing two good-sized sitting-rooms1 a pleasant sewing-room1 and private apartments for the matron and five teachers4 ,this has been completed4 ,early last spring1 funds were forthcoming for a new hall for young men4 ,work was immediately begun4 ,a fair crop of 8,mississippi brick0 was raised on the spot4 ,a sufficient number of men were employed to push on rapidly the work of building4 ,a commodious and pleasing hall #da #aab feet stands ready for students4 ,a deep1 roomy basement extends under the whole building1 furnishing rooms not only for uses connected with the hall1 but also those connected with certain of the industrial departments4 ,the first floor affords us a large room for most part into school uses4 ,it has two large recitation-rooms1 a library1 a reading-room1 two music-rooms1 besides an office and suitable rooms for one family and guests4 ,these four buildings1 together with the neat little cottage for the president and his family1 comprise the chief externals of ,tougaloo ,university4 ,the old building for young men1 known as the 8,barracks10 is to take its of having ,industrial departments in connection with any of our schools1 it is necessary1 of course1 to decide as nearly as possible what the expense of establishing and maintaining such departments will be1 and what the advantage to the pupil4 ,in other departments of training it is found necessary to secure liberal endowments in order to meet expenses4 ,why should more be asked of this8 ,we sustain our ,theological departments to train men to be successful preachers of the ,word4 ,we sustain our ,industrial departments to train them to be successful business men4 ,but one is direct ,christian and missionary work4 ,so is the other4 ,god first put man to pruning the garden1 not to preaching the gospel4 ,and whatever is done to make the world again a garden is evidently in the line of ,god's plan4 ,it is certainly possible for us to give too little weight to the training of workmen4 ,i suppose it is expected that ,i will present my thoughts in the shadow of experience4 ,the ,industrial department at ,tougaloo ,university embraces3 #a4 ,general ,farming4 #b4 ,strawberry ,culture4 #c4 ,gardening4 #d4 ,stock-,raising4 #e4 ,general ,housework4 #f4 ,work in ,laundry4 #g4 ,work in ,sewing-,room4 ,in our general farming we have confined our work to those crops that we can consume on the place--corn1 oats and potatoes4 ,we expect to cultivate cotton hereafter1 rotating it with other crops4 ,corn yields fairly1 but not equal to the ,west1 of course4 ,the oat crop1 ,i think1 can be made equal to the ,western crop4 ,we have done enough with grasses to satisfy ourselves that grass can be very profitable grown and marketed4 ,the strawberry crop can be grown1 picked and marketed almost entirely with student labor4 ,we have to hire a little outside help during the picking season4 ,this is both a pleasant and profitable industry4 ,we can begin shipping about ,april #aj1 or earlier1 according to the season4 ,chicago is our market4 ,the garden is a great help in supplying our table1 and in any of our schools we ought to be able to cultivate a garden for the family with student labor with good results4 ,but gardening for profit must be taught1 and requires skill and means4 ,four years ago we ventured to purchase a little thoroughbred ,ayrshire and grade ,jersey stock4 ,we had no appropriation for such purchases1 but felt that we must make a beginning4 ,we needed the milk to use4 ,we had land and must utilize it4 ,the scholars needed to be taught the value of good cows4 ,we have not only awakened interest in the minds of the students1 in the matter of stock-raising1 but also in the minds of some of the old planters about us4 ,the general housework and the work in the laundry and sewing-room have been well managed under the oversight of our matron and others1 but in these1 as in other departments already mentioned1 the returns seem slight when compared with the expense of sustaining the labor4 ,if we look at some of the difficulties1 we shall perhaps feel more forcibly the absolute need of sustaining industrial schools4 ,the people know nothing in the line of general farmwork1 except the culture of corn and cotton in the old way4 ,they know nothing of the value of rotation in crops1 underdraining1 fertilizing1 etc4 ,they know nothing of the use and care of improved implements4 ,there has been no sense of responsibility developed in them4 ,they break tools1 misplace them1 lose them4 ,a new set of hands use the tools and teams each day of the week4 ,in a jolly1 good-natured way1 time is killed1 and but little is accomplished4 ,these faults must be corrected4 ,this takes time and patience4 ,meanwhile the leakage and breakage and drainage is costing4 ,in the strawberry field we have not the advantage of skilled pickers and packers1 but must put new hands in the field each year4 ,in the garden1 the boys want to use the big cotton hoes1 and cut and slash as they do in the field1 and so they tear up the tomatoes and root up the rutabagas1 and cut up the cabbages4 ,many of the boys have never had a fork or a rake in their hands4 ,they know how to 8gear up0 a mule to plow1 but would be utterly lost if they should undertake to put a decent harness on a horse and hitch him into a wagon4 ,in the housework the girls are no more responsible about their sweeping and scrubbing1 their washing and wiping1 than the boys are on the farm4 ,in the laundry they often forget to kindle the fire until it is time to commence ironing4 ,then they must stand and wait for the irons to heat4 ,in the wash-room they would as soon use a box of soap as a bar4 ,in the sewing-room they sew and then rip1 and then sew up again and rip out again4 ,the girls have followed the plow or trundled baby wagons1 and know nothing about sewing1 knitting1 darning1 or anything else that fits them for real home life4 ,multitudes of young men have their hearts set upon the pulpit and platform while there is scarcely one in ten thousand who is learning a trade4 ,our carpenters and masons1 our tinners and shoemakers are men who are in middle life1 or whose heads are frosted for the grave4 ,these young people that we are educating will need school-houses and churches and court-houses2 but the way things are going now1 there will be no one to build them after their fathers are gone4 ,in view of these facts1 we have urged the establishment of shops where trades can be taught1 but we are headed off with the fact that we cannot pay expenses4 ,do other departments of training pay expenses8 ,wherever the work of training is done1 expense is incurred4 ,but people will give to make teachers and preachers4 ,ah6 they forget that the ,lord ,jesus worked in a carpenter's shop before he preached the glad tidings2 that ,peter learned the art of catching fish before he caught men2 and that ,paul made tents for depraved men to use as homes in this world before he told them of the heavenly mansions4 ,what is needed in these young people is the development of character4 ,manliness1 womanliness1 self-reliance can only be developed by a course of training that teaches hands1 heads and hearts at the same time4 ,i have spoken of the comparative expense of our industries1 but it is by no means all outgo and no income4 ,i have no balance sheet to present with this paper1 but the milk goes from the stable to the pantry by the bucketful1 the vegetables from the garden to the kitchen by the basketful1 and the strawberries from the field to the fruit-room by the crateful4 ,besides the berries used in our family1 we receive from #be to #ajj net per acre from those shipped4 ,we have raised this year #gjj worth of sweet potatoes4 ,at very moderate prices we have on hand now at least one thousand dollars
