promises1 and armed with all prayer and

months since1 the cause of this         
,association was presented to a church  
in ,central ,new ,york1 after which the 
minister in charge addressed the        
congregation substantially as follows3  
8,every family belonging to this church 
must wish to give1 according to its     
ability1 to the cause which has been so 
clearly and ably presented4 ,in order   
that this may be brought about1 ,i have 
placed a slip of paper in each pew1 and 
desire that each family present         
subscribe the amount it will give1 and  
state when the money will be ready4 ,at 
the close of the service ,i will gather 
the slips1 and compare them with the    
church-roll4 ,if any families have not  
responded1 ,i will take a carriage1 if  
need be1 and1 before the close of the   

week1 call on those whose names have not
 been handed in1 so no one shall fail to
 have an opportunity for assisting in   
the great work of advancing the         
,redeemer's ,kingdom40 ,the result was a
 cheerful and liberal donation1 made up 
probably from all the families in the   
church4 ,the clergyman who adopted this 
thorough and self-denying plan was a    
pastor from ,nebraska1 on an exchange   
for a few months with an ,eastern       
brother4 ,it fell out that he had       
trained his ,western church in the      
method described above1 until all its   
members cheerfully rejoiced in it1 and  
put it into practice on all occasions   
when money was to be raised for either  
home or foreign objects4 ,so that1      
although his church numbered but        
eighty-five1 its contributions to       
benevolent objects exceeded those of any
 other ,congregational church in the    
,state4 ,moreover1 this was not brought 
about by neglect of things needful at   
home4 ,a new organ was purchased at a   

cost of #a1jjj1 the money being raised  
by the same method4 ,the blessing of    
,heaven was not withheld2 seasons of    
revival strengthened the church1 and its
 membership at present is over a        
hundred4 ,the perseverance and fidelity 
of the pastor were not overlooked4      
,where every one was schooled to give1  
it was an easy matter to gather what was
 wanted to purchase a beautiful gold    
watch as a ,christmas present for the   
minister4 ,the appreciation of pastor   
and people was mutual--so much so that  
the church was able to retain its       
minister1 though he was repeatedly      
called to other places1 where a larger  
salary was offered4  ,we commend the    
example of this clergyman and his people
 to the large number of devoted pastors 
who are always prayerfully seeking

,scarcely a day passes that we do not   
receive contributions for it1 and yet1  
as the sums are small1 it will require

,thompson4 ,no man in the world is a    
better judge than he of its necessity   
for the use of the mission4 ,he was for 
many years a missionary at the ,mendi   
,mission1 was indefatigable in his      
labors1 made wide explorations in the   
regions round-about1 exerted a vast and 
wholesome influence over the people1    
exposed himself to the dangers of the   
climate1 and only gave up the work on   
which his heart was so much set after   
the failure of the health of his family4

circumstances1 for the ,john ,brown     
steamer is as strong an attestation of  
his appreciation of its worth1 as his   
earnest and eloquent words4 ,read his   
letter and help us to complete the

intention to build a steamer for the    
,mendi ,mission2 ,glory to ,god6 ,my    
heart rejoices4 ,this1 more   than      
almost any other human means1 will help 
the mission4 ,i   well know the need of 
such a craft1 having been back and forth
   so many times in canoes1 sometimes   
old1 leaky ones1 and my wife   and many 
others have suffered greatly in those   
long and rough   canoe voyages from and 
to ,sierra ,leone1 often terrible and

 of the degradation of the colored women
 in the ,south4 ,you are ready to       
believe in their dirty1 comfortless     
huts1 yet ,i could take you into many a 
pleasant home among the colored people1 
where neatness and order reign supreme1 
where man's industry and woman's taste  
have combined with charming result1 and 
where it would be hard to say which was 
exerting the greater or better          

influence--the earnest ,christian man1  
or his equally earnest wife4 ,tasteful  
pictures on the walls1 books of standard
 authors on the table1 shades at the    
shining windows1 a clean1 white bed1 a  
clock1 perhaps a cabinet organ1 would   
meet your wondering gaze4 ,with keen    
insight the women and girls recognize   
the primary cause of such a home and the
 influence that has molded its founders4
 ,so1 in ever-increasing numbers1       
ignorant1 uncouth girls1 apply for      
admission to the missionary school1     
which1 in some mysterious way1 is to    
transform them2 and their               
poverty-stricken mothers give of their  
scanty store all that can be spared1 and
 more1 and wait with joyful anticipation
 for the time when the daughters may    
become the teachers from whom they in   
turn may learn the more excellent way4  
,to us1 then1 comes the work of         
educating them1 not out of their        
positions in life1 but for them2 to     
train them in such habits that they may 

look upon uncleanliness1 either physical
 or moral1 with utter loathing1 and yet 
to implant that ,christlike spirit which
 shall lead them to count no home too   
repulsive1 no work degrading1 if only it
 is the ,lord's place and work for them4
  ,with such an end in view1 school work
 means much4 ,not only is the dormant   
intellect to be awakened and the        
knowledge of books imparted1 but also   
that practical knowledge of every-day   
life in which1 strange to say1 they may 
be even more deficient4 ,nor do they    
always come with that keen thirst for   
improvement that insures success4 ,how  
can they1 when the consciousness of     
their own shortcomings has not yet      
dawned upon them8 ,their acquaintances  
are as ignorant as themselves2 their own
 bare home is as good as their          
neighbors'4 ,not until they have mingled
 in the school life with companions far 
beyond themselves in attainment do they 
realise their own need1 and begin to    
climb4 ,personal neatness is to be      

inculcated2 dress1 deportment1 speech1  
expression1 manner1 must be watched and 
toned by careful teachers4 ,a sense of  
honor must be cultivated1 and1 above    
all1 conscience aroused and trained1    
that the end of all our labor may be    
attained and ,christ be found in them4  
,much of their future usefulness depends
 on the industrial training which is    
becoming more and more a feature of our 
schools4 ,the difficulty of uniting this
 branch of instruction with the regular 
school duties was long ago recognized by
 so eminent a teacher as ,mary ,lyon2   
and what was hard in ,new ,england is   
even harder in ,georgia and ,alabama4   
,but the need is greater1 too2 and on   
missionary ground the question cannot   
be1 8,is it difficult80 but only 8,is it
 best80 and1 since there could be but   
one answer1 all over the ,south1 this   
work in many forms is being carried on  
to-day4 ,due attention is paid both to  
theory and practice4 ,lectures on       
cooking1 for instance1 are followed by  

conversations on the subject1 where     
questions can be freely asked and       
difficulties explained1 after which the 
pupils are required to test their       
knowledge by making bread1 cooking meals
 and the like4 ,this practice is        
repeated day by day1 and the            
examinations are as rigid as in any     
other department4 ,sewing is as         
carefully taught1 a part of each day    
being devoted to it4 ,darning and       
patching become an art1 until some      
specimens of their skill in this line   
could be ranked almost as ornamental    
needlework4 ,not only sewing1 but the   
cutting of garments1 is taught2 and this
 affords good opportunity for those wise
 counsels on economy1 simplicity and    
kindred subjects which these girls need 
so much4  ,housekeeping in its minutest 
details receives careful attention1 and 
here1 as everywhere else1 precept       
follows precept and theory is           
supplemented by practice4  ,another and 
no less important branch is that of     

nursing the sick4 ,the ignorance of the 
very simplest remedies and of hygienic  
laws on the part of many of the colored 
people is appalling4 ,the treatment of a
 cold1 or a slight accident1 is as much 
beyond their knowledge as the most      
complicated disease would be1 while a   
sudden emergency1 as a case of          
poisoning1 would paralyze them with     
fear4 ,medicine to them is simply       
medicine1 and one kind as good as       
another4 8,i didn't have no sugar10 said
 the mother of a sick baby to the       
missionary who was attending to its     
needs1 8and so ,i put a spoonful of the 
medicine that didn't want sweetening    
into a spoonful of the medicine that did
 want sweetening and it seemed to do him
 good40 ,that this ignorance was not    
unusual may be inferred from the        
estimate that in the city where this    
mother lives the death rate among the   
negroes is three times that of the      
whites4  ,the method of imparting this  
knowledge of nursing varies in different

 schools4 ,in every case opportunity for
 practice is abundant2 sometimes in     
their own homes1 sometimes among the    
poor of the city or in the women's wards
 of the hospital4 ,a prominent physician
 of ,memphis1 noting the examination    
questions required of the girls of ,le  
,moyne ,school1 said3 8,if your girls   
answered those questions1 they ought not
 only to make safe nurses1 but also fair
 physicians40 ,the object1 however1 is  
not to make physicians1 but to give a   
thorough acquaintance with the details  
of nursing1 including all those little  
thoughtful attentions to the sick which 
,northern girls learn from the lips and 
the practice of gentle1 efficient       
mothers1 but of which the colored women 
seem as ignorant as their daughters4    
,you can hardly imagine a more desolate 
scene than a case of sickness in a cabin
 home4 ,there is no isolation--all      
family work performed in sight of the   
patient1 the glaring light falling full 
on the bed1 water either for drinking or

 bathing seeming an unknown luxury1 and 
noise everywhere4 ,into such homes these
 eager girls penetrate1 adapting their  
knowledge to the surroundings with      
wonderful tact1 hanging an old quilt or 
shawl to give isolation1 shading the    
light1 preparing with neatness and      
dispatch some tempting morsel of food1  
and administering with their own hands  
that thorough bathing which is often the
 most potent medicine4 ,no wonder that  
after such treatment one poor old       
creature should ejaculate1 8,thank the  
,lord1 when we get to ,heaven we shall  
all get on clean clothes40 ,alas1 that  
in so many homes the inmates seem       
perfectly content to wait till that time
 for the delightful sensation6  ,of     
course cleanliness and other hygienic   
laws are placed first in importance1 and
 just here we are finding one answer to 
the question so near our hearts1 8,how  
can we make the homes better40 ,the     
lessons learned by the daughters at     
school are duly repeated to the mothers 

at home1 who are the more ready to      
receive new ideas of house-keeping from 
the young teachers who have first       
revealed to them the secrets of         
health-keeping4 ,it is idle to hope to  
accomplish the greatest good for these  
girls unless for a time they are wholly 
under our control4 ,evil influences     
cannot be forgotten or overcome in a    
month or a term4 ,they must come into   
our boarding-schools for a term of      
years1 and the money to keep them there 
must come in part from you4 ,by the     
industrial system1 they can be helped to
 some extent and the idle and careless  
sifted out2 but after all is done1 the  
last hard-earned penny paid over1 the   
last work tried1 there is still need4   
,but there are so many calls1 and you   
are so busy4 ,yes1 so was one of old1   
and you remember1 8,as thy servant was  
busy here and there1 he was gone40      
,just so will it be here4 ,the work for 
these girls must be done now4 ,if we do 
not help them1 there is no help for     

them1 and instead of life and light     
there is nothing but blackness of       
darkness before them4 ,their influence  
will widen and deepen just the same1    
only instead of a blessing it will bring
 a curse1 until the old sentence may be 
repeated for us1 and our lives go for   
their lives and our people for their

law1 and that there is no sin but the   
violation of the laws of our physical   
being1 and that if these were understood
 and obeyed by all1 there would be no   
sorrow1 suffering or disorder in the    
world4 ,but with a deeper insight1 we do
 not need to live long on earth to learn
 that violation of moral law for a time 
will bring into fearful disorder1 and   
actually subvert1 physical law4 ,if any 
truth in this world is manifest1 it is  

that a nation is well balanced and      
secure just in proportion to the        
observance of the moral law respecting  
the family2 that a commonwealth is      
prosperous and invincible1 in its       
material as well as spiritual interests1
 exactly in proportion to the strength  
and purity of its homes1 even to the    
humblest4 ,naught can bring such dire   
confusion and destruction as laxity of  
family relations2 what1 then1 can you   
expect of those for whom the family was 
obliterated1 and that by legal statute1 
for many generations8 ,the freed people 
are by no means the only sufferers1 for 
in obedience to the divine principle    
just referred to1 precisely to that     
degree that the colored woman refuses to
 recognize marriage and a home1 just so 
far is the whole region demoralized2 and
 this obliquity over wide extent        
threatens the very vitals of our great  
republic4 ,educate1 ,christianize1      
inspire the young colored woman1 and you
 save and elevate not only the entire   

colored race1 but you brace up the white
 people of the ,south to moral standards
 far from universal now2 you save all1  
in all their interests1 temporal and    
eternal4 ,the domestic relations are the
 deepest in life2 they dictate and      
control all others4 ,make the home pure 
and powerful1 and the soil will yield1  
and demand and supply will adjust       
themselves2 cities will rise1 and laws  
will protect1 and schools will flourish1
 and the church will grow apace1 and    
there is work and education and         
salvation for all4 ,this is no idle     
picture2 every one of us knows the      
reality of it4 ,and it is because the   
home is the basis and centre of all     
earthly life--and who makes the home8   
,mainly1 it is the woman4 ,therefore1   
save the woman2 build her up hour by    
hour2 feed her with wisdom of every     
kind2 regulate her passion and emotion1 
discipline her reason1 fortify her will1
 nerve her with principle1 fire her with
 enthusiasm1 and make her tender with   

,christ's own love4 ,in every mighty    
movement on earth1 woman is at the      
bottom1 and the problem which more than 
any other agitates this whole country   
to-day1 is because of woman4 ,she can   
wreck this nation1 and she can deliver  
it4 ,man fought to save it2 woman prays1
 teaches1 suffers and sacrifices to save
 it4  ,one day at the ,south1 while on a
 solitary walk1 ,i stepped through the  
crazy paling1 and spoke to a jolly black
 woman who was getting dinner in the    
yard just before the front door4 ,she   
was about forty-five1 with a superb     
physique1 quite unfettered by fashion1  
for she wore but one garment1 which did 
not hang in flounces1 but in strings4   
,the fire1 or rather smoke1 for ,i saw  
no fire1 puffed up from a little heap of
 sticks1 and over this swung a broken   
kettle1 which1 apart from the gourds    
lying about1 was the only dish of the   
household4 ,into this kettle she had put
 a piece of grimy salt pork1 with a     
share of bristles remaining on it1      

making a firm rind1 and with it         
turnip-tops and cabbage-stumps1 and she 
was then washing sweet potatoes2 and    
such a nest of children in every stage  
of dirt and nakedness and hunger1 and   
every one in densest ignorance and      
heathenism6 ,the little hut couldn't    
hold them1 so they were ranged inside   
the paling1 all in a row1 forming a kind
 of animated hedge1 their little bare1  
shining bodies flashing as they whisked 
in the sun1 their big1 round eyes       
gleaming with curiosity1 and every      
single body of them poised to turn a    
somersault or two and ask me for a      
penny4 ,the woman made a low courtesy1  
and a graceful one it was1 and as ,i    
greeted the children the whole batch of 
them squealed and cackled1 stood on     
their heads and came right side up with 
the wildest kind of a grin1 in my very

one overworked mother at the ,north1    
with her solitary child1 flashed across

again she sang and rippled and rolled at
 the absurd idea of a mother's taking

you to say4  ,destitution and ignorance 
like this may be found all through the  
,south1 but just such families have been
 reached and redeemed by our            
missionaries1 and if all are not        

reached1 it is simply because we do not 
send the missionaries1 for allowing     
every discouragement that exists the    
fact still remains that there is no     
missionary work on the earth so hopeful 
and so rich and so rapid in its results

 reports from those of the students who 
had taught school during the vacation4

getting possession of land1 and all     
other items of interest relating to     
their work4  ,president ,cravath read a 

letter from a county superintendent in  
,mississippi1 who bore the strongest    
testimony to the honesty1 morality and  
efficiency of the teachers who had gone 
out from ,fisk ,university4  ,mr4       
,mitchell1 a new student1 had taught in 
one neighborhood for two years1 in ,de  
,soto1 ,miss4 ,he had succeeded in      
building up a successful ,sunday-school4
 ,he had in his school about #aej pupils
 and three assistant teachers4 ,the     
citizens encouraged the education of the
 colored people and took great interest 
in his school4  ,miss ,murray had taught
 in ,mississippi for five months4 ,the  
people were very poor and the children  
were poorly clad4 ,she taught in the    
,sunday-school very successfully2 she   
did not think that the people had bought
 much land1 but they had stock and      
wagons4  ,geo4 ,mc,lelland did not wish 
to exaggerate1 but desired to tell the  
truth4 ,he taught just above ,vicksburg1
 ,miss42 here there is little           
civilization4 ,in their homes1 the large

 majority of the people are virtually   
slaves2 they pay #i per acre1 or #ij    
pounds of lint cotton for their lands2  
they raise nothing but cotton and corn1 
and often come out in debt2 they buy    
their goods at the store on account1 on 
fall time4 ,in most cases last year they
 came out behind2 in this condition they
 must give a lien on the next year's    
work2 some do better than this1 but the 
majority are in this wretched condition4
 ,government land is sold at #be cents  
per acre1 but the colored people do not 
buy it to any extent2 this year they    
have done something of this1 and have   
secured forty acres of good land4       
,saturday night the people go to the    
store and drink up an acre of government
 land at the rate of #be cents a glass4 
,one church represents all4 ,they       
worship in a very blind1 ignorant1      
superstitious way4 ,in the church he    
attended two out of five could read a   
little4 ,one elder1 in telling how we   
were to get to ,heaven1 said that after 

we were dead we must first go to hell   
and search all around1 and if we did not
 find our names there we were to go to  
,heaven4  ,d4 ,donnel taught in         
southwestern ,arkansas4 ,he had much    
opposition1 but he had1 by persevering1 
found out that there was 8a little man  
in him40 ,the people are getting homes  
and becoming owners of land4 ,they had  
never been aroused before4 ,they were   
all religious1 but they all drank       
whisky1 from the least to the greatest4 
,the white people did not believe in    
getting a good teacher from abroad1     
because he carried the money out of the 
country4  ,queenie ,v4 ,moore taught in 
,illinois and had high ideas of the     
colored people1 but she found them not  
nearly so well off as the colored people
 of the ,south4 ,the young people spent 
their time near the taverns1 smoking and
 drinking4 ,she had a model             
school-house1 which was also used as a  
church4 ,the people were from all the   
,southern ,states4 ,she tried to inspire

 the young people with a higher purpose 
than to wear fine dresses or smoke      
cigars1 and succeeded in getting them   
into ,sunday-school4 ,the white people  
were very cordial and friendly4  ,prof4 
,j4 ,d4 ,burrus tried to look upon the  
bright side at ,murfreesboro1 where he  
visited1 and was surprised to find the  
colored people so prosperous in getting 
farms1 houses and in educating their    
children4 ,one man had paid #a1ajj for  
his house and #a1ajj for his shop4      
,within a radius of a few miles he      
counted up #cj families that owned their
 own homesteads4  ,h4 ,c4 ,gray taught  
in ,texas2 was ,superintendent of the   
,sunday-school4 ,he had studied the land
 system of ,texas4 ,a man buys a piece  
of land and pays a little down and #aj  
per cent4 interest on the notes4 ,many  
of them are in debt4 ,the school law is 
such that each child may ask the judge  
to set aside his pro-rata for him to go 
to school upon1 so that each child gets 
his chance to be educated4         99

,miss ,amy ,williams1 ,atlanta4  ,during
 the summer the city of ,atlanta erected
 a beautiful eight room colored school  
building not more than sixty rods from  
the ,storrs ,school4 ,we all said1      
surely the number attending our school  
will be greatly diminished by this new  
free school2 consequently1 only four    
teachers were summoned to be on the     
ground ready for the opening of school  
on ,september #e2 but as #bhj pupils    
filed into the school building1 we saw  
that we had underestimated the force    
needed1 and our fifth teacher was called
 in1 and before the expiration of two   
weeks the sixth one was installed in her
 old place1 and we are now hard at work 
with #cej pupils enrolled1 and new ones 
are being admitted almost every day4    
,this new colored school1 which we can  
see so plainly from our home1 is a      
constant inspiration for us to work on  
with new courage1 for its eight faithful

 teachers1 with one exception1 have been
 first trained at ,storrs ,school and   
afterward at ,atlanta ,university4      
,this good work loses none of its       
fascination for us2 we only mourn that  
time and strength are not given us to   
accomplish more4  ,mr4 ,kent1 our new   
pastor1 comes with perfect health1 and  
is brim-full of enthusiasm and earnest  
desire to do the people good4 ,his      
earnestness1 supplemented by the        
experience and good judgment of ,miss

we anticipate the changes which one year

 to make the best of the 7dis7 comforts 
and 7in7 conveniences of the old        
building2 but it could not hold half of 
the young men1 and it seemed to us that 
the old rooms over the shop and         
wood-house1 and the temporary barracks1 
had served their day and generation1 and
 we needed--yes1 there was no doubt of  
it--we needed a new building4 ,we asked 
the ,lord for one1 and the beginning of 
the answer to our prayer was the        
sweeping away by the flames1 in one     
short hour1 of our main school building1
 which included chapel and boys'        
dormitories4 ,but1 though cast down1 we 
were not destroyed utterly1 for we had a
 large new barn1 out of which we turned 
the cattle2 dubbed it 8,ayrshire ,hall10
 and moved in4 ,we were sure the ,lord  
,jesus would not forget that ,his       
birthplace was a manger1 and would      
glorify this refuge with ,his presence2 
and so ,he did4  ,our numbers were      
larger than ever1 and it was a wonder to
 us sometimes where they were all stowed

 away2 but we were always able to find a
 place for 8one more10 and so the year  
went on and ended4 ,the boarding hall   
had been enlarged during the last half  
of the year by the addition of a wing   
and another story1 so it could          
accommodate more than twice as many     
girls as before4 ,and now followed a    
busy summer1 during which the boarding  
hall was finished off and a substantial 
three story brick building erected4 ,a  
good many buildings have been put up at 
various places by legacies and named for
 the dead1 but we thought it right to   
give honor to the living as well1 and by
 request of the ,faculty1 the ,executive
 ,committee voted to name this building 
after the ,association's representative 
man1 ,dr4 ,m4 ,e4 ,strieby4 ,and so a   
tablet over the main entrance bears the 
words 8,strieby ,hall40 ,the work upon  
this building has been entirely done by 
colored men1 except a few days work by  
the traditional 8plumber40  ,to-day we  
met to keep our ,thanksgiving feast and 

to dedicate this building to the cause  
of ,christian education4 ,oh1 such      
gladness and thankfulness as filled our 
hearts1 and was voiced by the choir in  
the opening anthem1 8,praise the ,lord60
 ,after the opening exercises voluntary 
expressions of thanksgiving were called 
for4 ,mr4 ,hartsfield1 our head         
carpenter1 said he could not help       
comparing the present with twenty-five  
years ago1 when he little dreamed of    
ever participating in such exercises as 
these1 and said his heart was so full of
 thankfulness he could not express it4  
,others spoke of their gratitude for the
 blessings of the year and of this day4 
,mr4 ,h4 ,w4 ,hubbard1 our genial       
,treasurer1 who was with us1 told the   
young people where the money to furnish 
them these advantages comes from4  ,an  
address was then delivered by ,rev4 ,b4 
,a4 ,imes1 of ,memphis1 which will be   
long remembered by us all1 but          
especially by our students1 to whom it  
has already proved a real inspiration4  

,dr4 ,roy followed in a wonderfully     
appropriate dedicatory prayer4  ,the day
 seemed all too short to express the joy
 and thanksgiving that filled our       
hearts4 ,truly ,he has brought 8the     
blind by a way that they knew not40 ,we 
finished up the day with a lecture at   
night from ,dr4 ,roy1 who always has    
something good for us4  ,our new        
building has1 besides chapel and        
recitation rooms1 family rooms now      
occupied by ,prof4 ,hatch and wife1 who 
have charge of the young men1 and       
dormitories for sixty-eight young men4  
,and what will you say when ,i tell you 
that there are seventy-five here now1   
with a prospect for a much larger number

,north last summer a friend asked3      
8,haven't you had enough of life and    
work in the ,south8 ,aren't you ready to
 come back and take hold of the ,home   
,missionary work again80 ,the friend    

looked so incredulous at my expressions 
of satisfaction1 and even of desire to  
get back into the work again as soon as 
the extreme heat was over1 it occurs to 
me that a little glimpse of the past few
 days of life and labor in this especial
 corner of the great field might        
convince a good many that the work is   
not only very hopeful1 but also         
exceedingly interesting4 ,previous to my
 restful vacation ,north1 ,i had not    
been able to visit our people in their  
homes1 but now1 with renewed strength1  
,i ventured a long1 rough walk1 leaning 
on my husband's arm1 to the home of one 
of our women1 who was very sick4 ,down a
 steep1 long hill1 over deep ravines    
worn by swift-running brooks1 with      
slender poles thrown over to serve for  
bridges1 up the long hill beyond1 and we
 had reached the little house where the 
sick one lay4 ,we cheered her as best we
 could with sympathy and comforting     
words1 spreading out the little         
delicacies we had brought to tempt her  

appetite1 admired the new baby1 and won 
the hearts of the other little people   
standing shyly back with the gingersnaps
 we had brought for their special       
comfort4  ,just as we were leaving we   
noticed a young girl crouching near the 
door4 8,my sister ,mag10 said the sick  
one4 ,we shook hands cordially1 said a  
few pleasant words to her1 then came    
back to our home tired1 so very tired1  
that the rest of that day and the next1 
which was the ,sabbath1 was full of     
weariness and pain4  ,did it pay8 ,yes1 
a hundred-fold6 ,early ,monday morning  
there was a tap at the door1 and there  
stood 8,mag10 neatly dressed1 with a    
smiling face1 and a basket of vegetables
 for me4 ,it flashed instantly over my  
mind what ,i had heard concerning her4  
,she had once been a ,christian1 was    
still a member of our little church1 but
 for a long time past had seemed        
possessed with every evil spirit of sin 
and mischief that could possibly find   
lodgment in her heart4 ,nothing could   

induce her to set her foot inside the   
church door4 ,she invariably vanished   
whenever the minister tried to see her1 
and she had long ago been given up as an
 utterly hopeless case4  ,with a swift  
thought of prayer to ,heaven for wisdom1
 ,i greeted her most cordially1 made her
 feel quite at ease1 then led her on    
carefully step by step1 until1 before   
she knew it1 she was actually confessing
 her sins to me1 and ,i was talking     
kindly but most faithfully to her4      
,still she stayed on1 with a wistful    
look in her eyes1 and the thought came3 
8,god surely sent her to me6 ,i'll do   
all ,i can for her60  ,rising suddenly  
,i closed the door1 went directly to her
 and said1 8,mag1 ,i want to pray with  
you40 ,i put my arm around her1 drew her
 to her knees beside me1 and poured out 
my whole soul in prayer for that poor   
child of sin4  ,when we rose from our   
knees her eyes were tender and full of  
tears4 ,she clasped my hand tightly for 
a moment and was gone4  ,i sought out   

other homes that very day1 where ,god   
permitted me to carry little gleams of  
comfort and strength to sad hearts4     
,yesterday was the ,sabbath4 ,at four   
o'clock a white flag was fluttering at  
our gate4 ,five minutes after1 fifty    
young people and children suddenly      
appeared1 as if by magic1 from the      
lovely grove near by1 and came pouring  
into my largest room1 filling every     
chair and bench1 finally taking seats on
 the floor in the small space left about
 my chair4 ,they were such a bright1    
eager looking company--at least a third 
of them young men and young ladies1     
ranging down to half a dozen little     
fellows at my feet4  ,how ,i blessed the
 ,master for the gift of story-telling  
when ,i saw the eager faces1 the almost 
breathless interest with which every

blended story and lesson with all the   
grace and power ,i possessed1 until ,i  
had the joy of seeing the bright eyes   

grow tender and moist1 and knew the dear

in blessing upon us all4 ,then all stood
 with bowed heads while ,i commended    
them to ,god's mercy and loving care in 
an earnest petition in which all could

similar errand4 ,at length he sought    
ordination1 and went forth1 appointed by
 no society1 to become a self-sustaining
 missionary in ,china4 ,it is a comfort 
to me to give to each of our returning  
,chinese a letter to him1 though        
probably in many instances the          
probability of their seeing him is very 
small4  ,is it asked3 8,what would we do
 by our mission1 if we had it           
established80 ,we would1 first of all1  
give a cordial ,christian greeting at   
,hong ,kong to every ,christian ,chinese
 returning from ,california3 we would   
bring them off ship into an atmosphere  
warm with ,christian love2 we would     
bring them into meetings for prayer2 and
 would then let them go out to their old
 heathen homes1 baptized with the ,holy 
,ghost4 ,in the same spirit we would    
meet them as they come back on their    
return to ,california1 calling for      
reports of their experiences1 the       
temptations they have met1 the testimony
 they have borne1 and the results which 

have followed their words4 ,then1 we    
would make our mission house at ,hong   
,kong a rendezvous and training school  
for such of our ,chinese as may be      
fitted or could become fitted for       
evangelistic work among their           
countrymen4 ,we ought to raise up many  
such through our work in ,california4   
,the wise word1 8,africans for ,africa10
 has double wisdom when you read it     
8,chinese for the conquest of ,china for
 ,christ60 ,they have the hard language 
already2 they know from childhood the   
ways of the people2 they know from      
personal experience the darkness1 the   
fear1 the soul-hunger and the woe of    
heathenism4 ,it would not be wise to    
send them forth with no ,american       
supervision2 but evidently here is a    
great force at present little used1     
that1 properly directed1 might be       
wielded for the salvation of multitudes1
 and the ,christianization of the       
greatest empire of darkness the world   
now knows2 perhaps has ever known4      

8,but isn't the ground already occupied8
 ,how many missionary societies are     
already operating in and around ,canton8
 ,why add one more80 ,i have no         
statistics at hand1 and speaking thus   
from general knowledge alone ,i must    
keep far within the truth2 but ,i am    
surely safe in saying that of competent 
missionaries1 either ,chinese or        
foreign1 there are not in the provinces 
of ,south ,china one to #ajj1jjj people2
 ,i know that ,i am safe in saying that1
 in the districts from which our        
,chinese come there is not more than one
 to #cej1jjj4 ,i risk nothing1 ,i think1
 in affirming that ,central ,africa has 
to-day more missionaries in proportion  
to its population than these districts  
of ,china to which ,i have referred4    
,certainly many a helper might be added 
before any society now on the ground    
could possibly find itself jostled by   
neighbors4  ,besides1 we should have our
 own special methods and our own special
 field1 growing naturally out of the    

relationship between the mission here   
and the mission there2 such that while  
we should largely enter into the labors 
of brethren who have preceded us2 using 
the books that they have prepared2      
availing ourselves of various           
conveniences that they have contrived1  
we should in turn supplement and extend 
their work and multiply their joys4 ,we 
should be then1 not as competitors1 but 
as co-workers--one in spirit and        
mutually helpful4  8,but wouldn't it    
cost too much80 ,too much for what8 ,too
 much for the souls that would be saved8
 ,more that these souls are worth8 ,not 
one of our readers thinks this4 ,but    
this is the question3 ,would it not cost
 too much for our treasury to bear1     
loaded as it already is with such heavy 
responsibilities8 ,i reply that it would
 not be very costly4 ,two ,american     
missionaries1 a little property in ,hong
 ,kong1 a rented chapel here and there  
in the larger villages and the small    
stipends of the ,chinese evangelists2   

this would be all4 ,it would not call   
for a larger sum unless1 in the good    
providence and by the dear ,spirit of   
,god1 it came to be1 by virtue of its   
own success1 a large work2 and then     
contributions would flow in for it1 so  
that by means of it the treasury would  
be enriched rather than depleted4 ,i    
seldom prophesy2 but ,i will venture to 
say this1 that when the ,american       
,missionary ,association has once taken 
hold of this work1 and adopted as one of

will take but a brief period--a very few
 years--to give it such a place in all
