its interpretation1 telling us the time had come for us to make ready to go to the mission field1 we began packing our trunks1 putting away the things which we would not need during the summer4 ,we had been working in a hard field that winter1 the income had been very small1 and poor husband had worked as much as possible1 to get the children clothes and books for school4 ,but work was scarce and the battle had been long and hard1 for we felt we must settle down again that the children might be in school1 which matter the ,lord had dealt with us about many times before4 ,we were preparing to start as soon as the way was opened1 when there came a letter from a brother asking if we would not come and have some meetings with them4 ,we felt led to go1 and on arriving found the revival spirit was in the air4 ,the first night the place was packed1 and the altar was filled with hungry people seeking the ,lord4 ,we were there three weeks1 and they certainly were blessed weeks of victory1 for many precious souls received the ,baptism of the ,holy ,spirit and many were healed1 and the ,lord sent in money for some clothing1 which we were all needing badly4 ,after the meeting we returned for our trunks and to prepare for the trip across the country to ,california1 for from there we were to sail for our field in ,central ,america4 ,the livelong night we've toiled in vain1 ,but at ,thy gracious word1 ,i will let down the net again1 ,to do ,thy will1 ,o ,lord4 ,,home ,,leaving ,bidding our loved ones good-bye we left ,granite ,city1 ,illinois1 ,may #bith1 #aiai4 ,we took train from ,st4 ,louis at #d ,p4 ,m41 for ,stanton1 ,missouri1 where ,god had definitely led us to go4 ,as the train sped out of the city and over the long stretch of country beyond1 ,i was meditating over the many things that had happened at our farewell4 ,my dear mother had said she did not understand this thing1 and my brothers and sisters had spoken against our going out in such a foolish way1 without money and without backing of any kind4 ,they just knew that we would all starve and die in that far-off country4 ,none of them being ,christians1 they could not understand how the dear ,lord could supply our every need4 ,but the blessed ,holy ,spirit had spoken to my heart and said1 8,you have left all1 brothers1 sisters1 father1 mother1 houses and lands for ,my sake1 and the ,gospel's1 so ,i will give you brothers1 sisters1 fathers and mothers1 houses and lands1 wherever you go40 ,as we rode on1 we were praying that ,god would lead us every step of the way1 and not let us miss ,his will in any thing we did or said4 ,as ,i took some tracts from my hand bag to distribute among the passengers ,i noticed a white-haired gentleman take a seat just across from us4 ,the ,spirit said to me1 8,that is one of your ,pentecostal brothers4 ,ask him what you want to know about the place to which you are going40 ,we were not acquainted with any one at ,stanton1 and had been wishing that we could find out something about the place and the people before we arrived4 ,i began distributing the tracts through the car1 and when ,i came to this man he looked up and said1 8,praise the ,lord60 ,we had a blessed time from there on1 talking of the work over the country1 and learning of conditions at ,stanton4 ,arriving at the station we bade our brother good-bye and got off the train4 ,it was now quite dark1 and raining1 and our funds were down to twenty cents4 ,we stopped under the shed of the depot long enough to pray for leadings from the ,lord1 for it was late1 the agent had gone1 the depot was closed and the brother had told us that he thought most of the saints lived out in the country4 ,as we looked to our ,heavenly ,father to guide us ,he directed us to a store on the hill4 ,the owner was just closing the door as we came up4 ,my husband asked him if any of the mission people lived in the town and he said he did not know4 ,as we passed down the street we heard some one say1 8,well1 #8,praise the ,lord6' ,where did you come from80 ,it was dear brother ,armstead4 ,we had met him and his wife in some meetings in ,st4 ,louis1 but did not know they lived in ,stanton4 ,also others were there whom we knew1 having met them in other places4 ,we stayed about ten days and had blessed meetings4 ,the blessing of the ,lord came down upon our souls1 the dear little band of faithful saints were refreshed1 and the altar was filled with those seeking the ,lord4 ,a remarkable incident occurred here4 ,a woman across the street from where we were having the meetings became very much incensed at us because she thought we prayed and sang too loud4 ,she sent her children over to throw rocks and sticks at us1 while she sat in her house and made light of the shouting4 ,one night the power fell in a wonderful way and the people were very happy4 ,this woman was sitting barefoot in her bedroom reading the evening paper1 and felt something cold touch her foot1 but did not give it any attention at first4 ,feeling it again she looked down1 and there was a very large snake coiled ready to strike her foot4 ,she sprang away and screamed1 then ran to the meeting crying for some one to come and kill the snake1 as it had gotten on the bed where the baby was asleep4 ,some of the brothers went over1 found the serpent on the bed1 and killed it4 ,after that the woman felt different toward us and our shouting and praising the ,lord4 ,we had been praying for her and the ,lord had told us ,he would take care of it all4 ,we find the ,lord uses different means to bring people to ,himself4 ,from ,stanton we went to ,rolla1 ,missouri4 ,we knew no one in ,rolla1 or anything about the place1 but the ,lord had told us to go there1 so we went4 ,we just had money enough to get there4 ,as we stepped off the train a brother threw his arms around my husband and said1 8,well1 ,hallelujah6 ,my wife told me to come and meet this train1 for the ,lord was sending some one on it to help us in the meetings we have just started1 and here you are1 just in time40 ,they had opened a little work there and had been asking the ,lord to send someone to help them1 so ,he had sent us1 bless ,his dear ,name6 ,he also sent the ,holy ,spirit1 for we had a wonderful time4 ,one of the hard fighters of ,pentecost received the ,baptism1 and many others were blessed in their souls1 and some were healed in their bodies4 ,from ,rolla we went to ,springfield1 ,missouri1 and stayed over ,sunday with the dear saints there1 having a refreshing time for our souls1 and a rest for our bodies4 ,from there we went to ,everton1 ,missouri1 where we had been led to hold some meetings4 ,on arriving in this little town we found that the only building there was for the meetings had burned down the day before4 ,we spent the day in a grocery store praying for a door to be opened for the ,gospel1 for we had been told it was a very wicked town and that the ,pentecostal message had never been preached there4 ,in the evening we went out to see about getting some rooms where we could stay while there4 ,going to a certain place we met the ,presbyterian minister4 ,when he found that we had come to have revival meetings he hastened to open his church to us and insisted that we begin the services that night4 ,he told us that he had been praying for a revival as they had not had a convert in that town for over thirty years1 and that he hoped we could do something to stir the people up4 ,he had not asked us what we were preaching1 as many others do when we arrive in a new place4 ,if he had known how we would stir up things in that dead town and that fine ,presbyterian church ,i don't know whether he would have been so quick to invite us in4 ,he rang the church bell1 we went in and began to sing and pray1 and soon the crowd came4 ,such a hungry-looking lot of people they were1 yet they looked like they were ready to run if something happened that they did not understand4 ,as we prayed and testified the glory settled down over us4 ,each night the people moved up a little closer to the fire1 and some dared to come up in the rostrum and help us sing4 ,once in a while we heard a faint ,amen from the dear old pastor1 and one night1 after the ,lord had met us in a very sweet and wonderful way1 he came and said1 8,there is something so different about you people from what we have ever seen in others4 ,why10 said he1 8it is no trouble at all for you to pray and testify1 and there is something about these meetings that fills my heart with joy1 and ,i want you to pray that ,i will get this blessing that you have1 for we need a great spiritual awakening here40 ,i felt like jumping up and down and telling him we had the ,baptism of the ,holy ,ghost and it was that which made us different from other folks4 ,o ,hallelujah6 ,but ,i knew we must use wisdom with them1 so left it to the ,lord to work out in ,his own way and time4 ,the next night the power fell on ,sister ,hagg1 and she went up and down the platform singing in the ,spirit and speaking in tongues4 ,we were wonderfully anointed and had a blessed meeting4 ,the dear people had never seen anything like that before4 ,they looked so hungry4 ,the next morning the pastor and his wife came to our rooms and he said1 8,i want this blessed experience4 ,pray for me1 and pray for my wife's healing40 ,she was deaf4 ,we had a sweet time praying together1 the dear old pastor calling on ,god to send the ,holy ,spirit into his life and into the church4 ,the next day we had to move on to ,kansas ,city4 ,but ,i am sure there was a work done and seed sown in ,everton that will bring forth fruit4 ,the people came to bid us good-bye1 saying they were so glad we had come and brought them the light of ,pentecost4 ,at the depot we were told the price of our tickets was #bj4 ,we found we were short of that amount by #d4bj4 ,we had only #ad4hj4 ,we went aside and prayed1 telling the ,lord ,he had told us to go to ,kansas ,city1 ,missouri1 and now the train was arriving and we did not have sufficient money4 ,the ,lord said1 8,go to the window and call for the tickets40 ,we obeyed1 knowing the ,lord was able to send money right straight from ,heaven4 ,as husband received the tickets through the window1 the agent said1 8#ad4hj40 ,we were soon on the train speeding on our way4 ,we do not know just how it came about1 but we know ,god did it4 ,hallelujah6 ,he makes a way where there is no way1 if we believe4 ,it was after dark when we arrived in ,kansas ,city4 ,we prayed and asked the ,lord just where ,he wanted us to go as we did not know anyone there4 ,he directed us straight up a street4 ,we walked several blocks1 not knowing where there were any missions4 ,we saw a nice little brick church on a corner1 but no sign to tell about meetings1 and the doors were closed4 ,as we stood there praying1 the ,lord told me to open the door and go in4 ,as we pushed on the door it opened into a vestibule4 ,from there some steps led into the auditorium through another door4 ,we heard some one saying1 8,praise the ,lord60 and knew they must be ,pentecostal people4 ,a brother came with outstretched hands to greet us1 asking1 8,where did you come from80 ,it was dear ,brother ,huff from ,chicago1 who was in charge of the mission4 ,we had a blessed time together praising ,god and seeing souls brought in and baptized in the ,spirit4 ,we were also blessed with ,brother ,scott in the mission in ,kansas ,city1 ,kansas1 and with his saints4 ,we then went on to ,topeka1 ,kansas1 by the direction of the ,lord4 ,we never went anywhere until we had prayed and received instructions from the ,lord4 ,most of the time ,he spoke through my lips the name of the next place1 even telling us when to go1 and what train to take4 ,oh1 the blessedness of the sweet ,holy ,spirit flowing in and upon our souls till we are lost in ,him4 8,he leadeth me1 oh1 blessed thought40 ,we arrived in ,topeka1 knowing nothing of the missions there or how to find them4 ,as we were walking down a street the ,lord said1 8,ask that boy where the mission is40 ,he was the son of one of the saints1 and lived near the mission4 ,we were at that mission two weeks and had a precious time4 ,the ,lord provided for us to travel to ,colorado ,springs with ,sister ,bowers in her car4 ,many were the times and ways ,god showed ,his mighty arm out-stretched toward us4 ,we started with very little money to buy food and gasoline1 or to pay for repairs for the car4 ,but ,he provided for all4 ,one morning as we were crossing a bridge1 some drunken men ran their car into ours1 throwing it over the edge of the bridge which had no rail1 the bridge being a new one and not completed4 ,our machine hung out over the water fifty feet below4 ,but as we went over the edge the power came upon us all1 and we began speaking in tongues4 ,the glory of ,god came down like a great white cloud1 and the machine was picked up and set in the middle of the bridge without a scratch on us or on it4 ,another time when we came into a town we were told that the road ahead was impassable2 that twenty cars had been pulled out of the place where the water covered the road for about a mile4 ,we asked the ,lord if we should go on or not4 ,he said we should go on1 and if we believed we should see the glory of ,god4 ,as we approached the water1 which came up to the doors of the machine1 and with great ditches on either side1 filled with water1 we could not see where the road was1 nor where the ditches were4 ,the power came down over the machine1 and we all began to sing in tongues4 ,sister ,bowers' hands went up in the air1 and never touched the wheel till we were over the place1 about a mile in length4 ,the mud and water did not even splash the wind shield or machine anywhere4 8,we will rejoice in ,thy salvation1 and in the name of ,god we will set up our banners4 ,the ,lord fulfil all thy petitions40--,psalm #bj3e4 ,we stopped at several places on the way and held meetings4 ,we also gave out tracts and papers1 filling the rural mail boxes along the highways with gospel literature4 ,each morning we cooked our breakfast and had our morning worship by the roadside1 then went on our way praising ,god for all ,his goodness in permitting us to preach ,his glorious gospel4 ,one night when we were sleeping out on the open prairie--as we were too heavily loaded to carry a tent--there came up a terrible storm4 ,the wind blew at a terrific gale and the thunder and lightning were awful4 ,we were fast asleep when a large coyote came near and began his loud barking1 evidently sent by the ,lord to awaken us just in time to see our clothes and hats sweeping across the plain before the fierce wind4 ,we ran after them1 and prayed the ,lord to stop the storm1 telling ,him ,he had promised us that it should not rain on us4 ,then the wind stopped1 also the thunder and lightning1 and we had nice dry weather the rest of the way4 ,arriving in ,colorado ,springs1 we were welcomed by the dear pastor and people4 ,they had a nice assembly1 and the ,lord sweetly worked the few days we were there4 ,some people from the plains came asking us to come and hold meetings for them in a school-house4 ,they had never heard ,pentecost preached1 excepting one woman who had read some about it and was hungry for the ,baptism4 ,we found the whole country ,free ,methodist1 and they said they had the ,holy ,spirit4 ,we had meetings every night for about a week1 everybody sitting back and looking on4 ,on ,sunday we were invited to the home of some of the leading people for dinner4 ,after we had eaten1 someone went to the piano and began playing a hymn1 and we started to sing4 ,soon we heard a terrible noise4 ,looking around we saw the man of the house laid out in the middle of the floor1 shaking from head to foot under the power of ,god4 ,in fact his feet were up in the air and his whole body was shaking violently4 ,his wife and the people were running out after water to throw on him4 ,but we told them it was the power of ,god1 and they must leave him alone4 ,they declared he had a spell with his heart and was dying1 but we kept on singing and holding on in prayer till he came through4 ,the news spread all over the country1 and that night all the rigs and autos for many miles around were there bringing the people to see the strange sights4 ,while we were singing1 the daughter of this same man arose1 came to the altar and fell under the power4 ,the fire spread over the house1 ,god working in a wondrous way4 ,some said it was the power of ,god1 others said we were hypnotizing the people1 and that was what made them fall4 ,the whole country was stirred1 and many heard the last-day message of the outpouring of the ,holy ,spirit to prepare the people for the coming of the ,lord4 ,we still receive letters from these people4 ,they are holding on to ,god1 and ,he is blessing them4 ,we also visited with dear ,brother and ,sister ,roper and their sister ,stout1 at ,immanuel ,faith ,home1 in ,pueblo4 ,this is a school for orphan children1 and a faith home where saints and missionaries can come and rest for a while4 ,we were there for a week1 and those were days of great blessing and refreshings from the ,lord4 ,these clear saints have opened that wonderful work in faith1 looking to ,god to supply every need1 and surely ,he has done according to ,his promise4 ,the way we saw ,god work there in answering prayer was far beyond anything we had ever witnessed before1 and the way the dear little children were taught to pray and trust ,god for their needs was blessed4 ,from there we went in the machine to ,denver1 where we spent two weeks at the camp-meeting4 ,how the blessing of the ,lord did come down on our souls6 ,we were greatly refreshed and our faith was quickened4 ,the latter was needed1 for we were going to the mission field by faith1 looking to the ,lord alone to supply every need4 ,the camp-meeting was coming to a close and the tents were being taken down1 but we did not know where we were to go next4 ,as ,i was packing the suit-cases1 and getting ready to leave1 the ,lord said to me1 8,arrange your clothes1 for you will go to ,los ,angeles in a few days40 ,offerings had been small and expenses heavy1 so we had but little money1 therefore we did not see how we could get to ,los ,angeles4 ,but never mind4 8,the natural man receiveth not the things of ,god40 ,don't reason1 but believe4 ,as ,i walked out by the lake1 and saw the pretty little fish so at home in the beautiful water1 without a care1 for ,god took care of them1 ,he spoke to my heart1 and said1 8,not a worry1 for as ,i made this beautiful crystal lake for the fish1 so ,i have made a great and beautiful way for ,my children4 ,and just as the fish swim through the water and drink it1 so ,my little children shall live and move in ,me40 8,for in ,him we live and move and have our being40 ,just then three women came up in a machine and stopped near where ,i was4 ,all were strangers to me1 but the ,spirit said1 8,join yourself to them40 ,i went over and spoke to them1 asking if they were ,christians4 ,they said they were1 and were wanting to see me4 ,they had heard me speak the night before1 and wanted to see more of me4 ,when ,i bade them good-bye one of them went with me to my tent4 ,she said she had some of the ,lord's money for me1 but did not know how to find me1 as the camp was breaking up and everyone was going away1 but she had been directed back to the camp-ground4 8,give me your address on the mission field10 she said1 8as ,i am to help support you there40 ,besides what she gave me at the camp-meeting1 she was one of our main supports on the field1 sending her offerings in no small sums4 ,we then went to ,colorado ,springs with a brother in his auto4 ,all the way the ,lord kept saying to me1 8,you will leave for ,los ,angeles soon after arriving at the ,springs40 ,as we must have #ajj4jj more for our tickets1 we did not know how it was going to work out4 ,when we went to the post office we received a letter from a brother in ,kansas with a check for #ajj4jj4 ,in the letter he said1 8,i supposed you were in ,california1 but as ,i was writing this check ,i was led to send it to ,colorado ,springs4 ,hope you receive it o4 k40 ,so here was the rest of our fare4 ,just as ,god had said1 we were to go to ,california4 ,he had the money right on hand1 bless ,his name6 ,after buying our tickets and a little lunch1 we had #c left4 ,we praised the ,lord we were on our way to the mission field1 to tell the heathen of this wonderful salvation4 ,as the train pulled out of the station1 a little sister who had been very kind to us threw #d in at the window4 ,,the ,,church ,,in ,,unity ,the ,wonderful ,vision ,we passed through ,royal ,gorge1 and over the mountains1 reaching the highest point just as the sun was sinking behind the western hills4 ,they call it 8,the ,top of the ,world40 ,there is a post office there where tourists mail folders and cards to all parts of the country1 describing the beautiful scenery4 ,here is the ,arkansas ,river1 dividing at an elevation of #aj1jjj feet1 running two ways1 growing wider and wider as it flows down the mountain beside the railroad4 ,i sat looking out the window at the stream which waters the fields all along the sides of the mountains and in the valleys4 ,the water is conducted through great flumes running in all directions1 even carrying the water up hill in some places4 ,the scene faded before my eyes1 and in its place ,i saw a great desert1 ,o1 so big and barren6 ,there was nothing but bits of thorny cactus growing here and there4 ,the sand was dry and parched4 ,far out in the middle of the desert there was an old house4 ,it was only a shack4 ,the roof boards were so old and weather beaten they were curling up at the ends4 ,the sides were beginning to fall away from the roof4 ,the door was small and falling off the hinges4 ,there seemed not one ray of hope for the little old shack so far away in the desert4 ,the winds of many centuries had beaten upon its sides4 ,it was ready to fall4 ,as ,i looked far away on every side ,i saw nothing but hot dry sand4 ,over the sand came a man4 ,he was weary1 and the hot sun beat fiercely upon his bare head4 ,as he came nearer ,i saw he was reading a ,bible4 ,he was so interested in it that he looked not to the right or left4 ,his face was right down in the ,book4 ,behind him came another1 and still another1 until there was a great company of people1 thousands of them1 both men and women4 ,all had their faces buried in the ,bible4 ,they were entering the little old shack1 passing in one by one4 ,i wondered at so many people being able to get into so small a house4 ,but soon ,i discovered that the house was enlarging4 ,the door became new and swung upright on new hinges4 ,as far as ,i could see across the plain people were coming4 ,each one's face was down in the ,word of ,god4 ,they were all moving toward and into the house1 now no longer a dilapidated shack but becoming a great strong building4 ,the roof was now of new material1 of such a bright red color that my eyes could not look upon it4 ,the sides had become new4 ,from the door clear water was beginning to flow4 ,i could see the sands of the desert carried before it as it went down and out of the building4 ,then the water burst forth from all sides of the house1 till all but the roof was clear1 crystal water4 ,the water spread over the desert1 until it had become a mighty river covering the whole country1 and people of every nation came running to it4 ,the great house in the center was of such beauty that my eyes could not look upon it4 ,the people began to come out of the house1 but they were not the same as when they went into it4 ,they were now large men and women1 as tall as telephone poles4 ,their countenances were shining with the glory of ,god4 ,in their hands were large nets4 ,these they cast into the stream1 in which there were many fish1 for as the people of all nations ran and fell into the water they became fish4 ,i could see their tails as they swam about4 ,each net was brought up full of fine1 large fish4 ,over the top of the building was written in letters of fire1 8,,the ,,church ,,in ,,unity40 ,as the vision disappeared1 ,i realized ,i was still on the train4 ,having my ,bible in my hand ,i opened to this ,scripture1 8,,declare ,,his ,,glory ,,among ,,the ,,heathen1 ,,his ,,marvellous ,,works ,,among ,,all ,,nations40 ,i ,chron4 #af3bd4 ,then the ,lord showed me that when ,his people receive1 through the ,holy ,spirit1 the revelation of the ,word1 they will come together in unity2 not merely be brought together by some creed or doctrine1 but by the revelation of the scriptures1 as they are made ,spirit and life4 ,this will cause the dilapidated building1 which represents the church out in the desert of unbelief and false doctrine1 to become new1 strong and great1 with the waters of the ,spirit flowing out to all nations4 ,and just as the ,arkansas ,river1 rising at the mountain summit1 divided and ran both ways1 watering the fields on either side of the mountain1 so as the church reaches the mountain summit of ,god's love and revelation of the scriptures1 the waters of salvation will flow both ways1 to the home and also to the foreign field1 and there will be a ,heaven-taught and ,spirit-trained ministry of apostles1 prophets1 evangelists1 pastors and teachers1 for the perfecting of the saints1 and for the evangelization of the heathen4 ,,opening ,,the ,,way4 ,arriving in ,salt ,lake ,city at noon the next day1 we were told the train we should take for ,los ,angeles did not carry chair cars1 so we would have to wait for a train that left at midnight4 ,we were very tired from our long train ride and went aside in the station to rest4 ,i lay down on a couch in the ladies' rest room1 but just as ,i had settled down for rest the ,lord said to me1 8,go and buy your berth on this train1 for it will be the last train through40 ,i did not know what it meant1 but ,i did not doubt the voice of ,god that had spoken to me so many times in the fifteen years ,i have been saved4 ,i went to my husband and told him1 and together we went to the ,pullman ticket office4 ,the agent said1 8,i have not a berth left4 ,the train is full and leaves in fifteen minutes40 ,i told him the ,lord had said we were to go on that train1 and there must be a place somewhere for us4 ,he said he knew he had not a berth left4 ,i said we must have two upper berths1 as we did not have sufficient money for lower berths4 ,the #d given by the little sister in ,colorado ,springs as our train was leaving and the #c4jj we had was all we had for the berths4 ,just then a man stepped up and said there were two upper berths left1 as some people had decided not to go on that train4 8,well10 said the agent1 8,i guess they are for you1 but you will have to hurry1 as the train is ready to go40 ,entering the coach we found the two berths were together4 ,how the ,lord does plan for ,his children1 opening doors which no man can shut4 ,hallelujah6 ,as we neared the ,california border the strike came on that paralyzed all street-car and train service for ten days4 ,three times the men were about to leave our train out on the desert4 ,but we prayed1 and ,god took the train through to ,los ,angeles4 ,other trains that started were forsaken by the trainmen and hundreds of people were left in the desert without food or water4 ,relief was sent to them by auto trucks1 and they came through in that way4 ,but ,god spoke to us1 and we obeyed1 and went on the last train that got through for over ten days4 ,how ,god does care for ,his own6 ,we were going out as missionaries and ,he wanted to teach us lessons of faith4 ,that is why ,he took us along with just enough money for one trip at a time4 ,many times we were without money or had but little4 ,then1 ,he would tell us not to look at our little means1 but to look to ,him1 with ,heaven's great storehouse full for all who would believe4 8,the just shall live by faith40 ,the new creature in ,christ ,jesus becomes heir to ,,all ,his riches in glory4 8,o the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of ,god6 how unsearchable are ,his judgments1 and ,his ways past finding out60 ,rom4 #aa3cc4 ,we arrived in ,los ,angeles with seventy-five cents4 ,the taxi man asked #d to take us to the camp-grounds1 and no street cars were running4 ,we asked ,father how we were to get out there4 ,it was too far to walk4 ,i was directed to a little lunch-counter across the street1 to ask the man about a machine standing in front of his place4 ,he told me he would take us out there1 as he was carrying passengers since the strike was on4 ,we asked him the fare and he said1 8,seventy-five cents40 ,we laughed1 for ,father knew just how much we had1 and would not let him ask more4 ,we reached the camp-grounds about nine o'clock4 ,the ,evangelist was preaching on faith1 and how we should trust ,god4 ,she stretched out her arm toward us and said1 in a loud voice1 8,the just shall live by faith40 ,this was a familiar text to us1 as it had been our motto for some three months1 or more1 but it is always new4 ,brother ,fisher came and said1 8,we have a tent up and ready for you1 but we have made no arrangements for meals for you1 as everybody makes their own arrangements for those40 ,we praised ,god for the tent and knew ,he would take care of the rest1 for ,he had sent us there1 so ,he would provide4 ,we were invited home with some friends that night1 but returned to the camp to stay the next morning4 ,noon came4 ,everybody was going out to the stand to get lunch4 ,we had to pray4 ,so we went into our little tent1 knelt down and told our ,heavenly ,father about our needs4 ,he says ,he knows our needs before we ask ,him1 but we receive by asking4 ,it is so sweet to tell ,him about every little need4 ,we had spoken to no one else about them1 as that would not be faith4 ,we went across the grounds to the big tent4 ,a sister came1 put her arms around me1 and said1 8,sister1 are you a missionary80 ,i told her we were just going out for the first time4 ,she said the ,lord had laid it on her heart to open a dining tent for the missionaries on the camp-ground1 and she wanted to invite me and my little family to eat with them4 ,i need not say that dining tent was one of the sweetest places ,i have ever seen4 ,we would gather there and sing and praise ,god and eat the food ,he had provided4 ,it was ,heaven on earth4 ,i am sure dear ,sister ,craton and her sister1 who worked so faithfully1 will receive abundant reward when ,jesus comes4 ,the meeting was wonderful4 ,the ,word was preached under the mighty anointing every afternoon and night4 ,hundreds were brought in and baptized in the ,holy ,spirit1 and many were healed4 ,one day they carried in a ,jew4 ,he was an invalid1 had been sick for many years and did not believe the ,bible or in ,god4 ,we gathered around him and prayed4 ,a great ball of fire came down through the tent1 struck that man on the head1 knocked him out of his chair and on to his feet1 and almost knocked down all who were praying with him4 ,he was healed and baptized in the ,holy ,spirit1 and ran over the grounds leaping and praising ,god4 ,many things ,god did there that strengthened our faith and prepared us for the life of faith on the mission field4 ,after the camp-meeting we rented a little apartment where we might live and make ready for our trip1 for there was sewing to be done and things to be made ready4 ,we were expecting to sail about the first of ,october4 ,but one day1 as we were praying about when we should sail1 the ,lord said1 8,you will sail about the first of the year40 ,we thought that was a long time off1 and did not understand why we were to wait so long4 ,going to the steamship office we learned that the port of ,corinto1 where we were to land1 was under quarantine for yellow fever1 and had been for several months1 but the ban would be lifted about the first of the year1 and it was4 ,they were precious months that followed4 ,everything that we needed had to be prayed in--trunks1 suitcases1 clothing1 everything came in answer to prayer4 ,while in ,san ,francisco ,i was very busy in meetings and had many letters to write4 ,sister ,kerr said1 8,ask the ,lord to give you a typewriter to take with you40 8,oh10 ,i said1 8,i could never have faith for a typewriter1 as ,i could get along without that1 and need so many other things40 ,while ,i was praying in my room the ,lord said to me1 8,you can have faith for a typewriter4 ,ask for one1 and you shall have it40 ,i said1 8,lord1 ,i do not know how to use a typewriter40 ,he told me that when ,i went back to ,los ,angeles ,i could go to night school and learn to use a typewriter1 and then ,he would give me one4 ,this ,i did1 and soon learned how to typewrite4 ,then ,i received a letter from a brother enclosing a check for #ej1 saying it was for a ,corona typewriter to take to the mission field4 ,i had never seen the brother and do not know how he knew of me1 but ,god knows4 ,i almost ran to the ,corona office to get my typewriter1 and with it ,i am writing this book4 8,i love the ,lord1 because ,he hath heard my voice and my supplications4 ,because ,he hath inclined ,his ear unto me1 therefore will ,i call upon ,him as long as ,i live40--,psalm #aaf3a1 #b4 ,while in ,oakland dear sister ,rawlins told me the ,lord had spoken to her to take her new ,singer sewing machine1 go home with me to ,los ,angeles and do up all my sewing4 ,here again was the dear loving hand of my ,heavenly ,father4 ,he said ,he would give me mothers and brothers and sisters4 ,this dear sister was truly a mother to me4 ,she came with me1 did up the sewing1 and1 as we were packing ready to leave for the mission field1 and she to return to ,oakland1 she gave me the machine to take with me4 ,how sweet that ,god has so many precious children who are ready to lay down their lives for the ,gospel4 ,we may not all be called to go1 but we all can do our part4 ,god bless every one who has given so freely and made it possible for the missionaries to go4 ,as ,i think of the many things and the money that have been given by the dear children of ,god1 it makes me fear ,i may not prove true and use it all to ,his glory4 ,but there is a cry in my soul that the ,lord will help me to be faithful1 and render unto the ,lord for all ,his benefits unto me4 ,psalm #aaf3ab4 ,everything was provided for the trip4 ,new trunks were sent up to the house4 ,two nice handbags were given4 ,one woman gave my daughter and me beautiful riding suits made to order4 ,a certain book ,i had long been wanting to read1 and had not been able to get1 was brought and laid on our table when ,i was out4 ,many little tokens of love were brought by the saints--nice useful things4 ,but there was one thing lacking1 a most important one4 ,that was our fare4 ,the ,lord had miraculously interfered and gotten us our passports1 and everything was packed and ready1 but no money for the fare1 which was near #gjj4jj1 including excess baggage4 ,one morning1 while praying in my room1 the ,lord said1 8,go to the steamship office and make your reservations40 8,but1 ,lord1 ,i haven't the money to pay down40 ,he said1 8,get ready2 ,i will send the money40 ,by the time ,i was dressed and ready1 a friend entered the room and gave me #ae4 ,well1 why hadn't the ,lord sent all that was needed for the fare8 ,never mind2 ,he had another lesson of faith to teach us4 ,i went to the office and found out about the steamers4 ,one sailed ,january #abth4 ,the ,lord said 8,take that one40 ,different faithful friend1 asked1 8,when does the steamer sail80 ,we told them4 8,and you haven't your fare yet80 8,no1 we haven't the fare yet1 but it is coming40 ,they said they did not believe we were to sail so soon or ,god would have sent the fare4 ,but we knew ,god had spoken and we believed4 ,one afternoon a woman came with a message which she claimed was from ,god4 ,some of them had been praying about our going1 and had received a message that we were not to go yet4 ,instead we were to go to a certain place and open a work4 ,for that reason ,god had not sent us our fare4 ,i replied1 8,i can't believe that1 for ,god has spoken to me many times1 and this message is the same that came through my lips in ,san ,francisco1 when ,he told me that we were to sail about the first of the year40 ,at that time1 as already related1 we found the port was under quarantine that would be lifted about the first of the year4 ,later we found it had been lifted1 and the ,lord had told us we were to sail on the steamer that went on ,jan4 #ab4 ,we kept in sweet communion with the ,lord1 and every time these friends came with a message1 ,he whispered to us to be still and know ,he was ,god2 and we should see ,his salvation4 ,time went by4 ,only a week more before sailing1 and we must have our ticket in three days in order to have our baggage attended to1 still there was no money in sight4 ,we kept praising the ,lord that ,he had spoken1 and it would come to pass4 ,a dear saint1 we thought much of1 came in4 ,she asked if we had our fare4 ,we said we had not4 ,she said1 8,surely there is something wrong4 ,god does not want you to go now40 ,but we quietly praised ,god4 ,he had spoken1 and it was so4 ,like ,paul1 we thanked ,god and took courage1 when it seemed that everything was against us on every side1 and the darkest hour was there4 ,then came dear ,brother ,norris from ,san ,bernardino1 ,california4 ,he said the ,lord had sent him to pay our fares4 ,so he went down and paid for our tickets and excess baggage4 ,why did we have this test8 ,it was just one more lesson for us to learn4 ,we must come to the place where we know the voice of the ,lord and there must be no mistake about it4 ,he wants us to know beyond the shadow of a doubt4 ,we are in dark days and there are many spirits to deceive4 ,we must know the voice of ,god1 and then1 no matter how impossible it may seem1 follow ,his voice4 ,many were the tests and trials we passed through1 but glorious was the victory ,he gave in the end4 ,illustration3 ,father ,n4 ,j4 ,norris1 who paid our way to the ,mission field ,the ,lord is my ,shepherd1 ,i shall not want2 ,he leadeth me out of the dry and thirsty land1 ,he bringeth me forth in pastures of green-- ,my eyes may not see all the ways ,he has planned1 ,far out with ,him in the way of faith1 unseen4 ,the ,lord is my ,shepherd1 ,i shall not want1 ,over the way of thorns and rocks ,i may go1 ,but ,he is the one who taketh me through2 ,through the thick darkness of doubt and woe1 ,but out from the clouds of darkness falls ,heaven's sweet dew4 ,the ,lord is my ,shepherd1 ,i shall not want1 ,so lead me on by ,thy ,spirit1 ,o ,god1 ,take me into ,thyself so dear2 ,leave me not1 though ,i pass under ,thy rod1 ,breathing the breath of fragrant air1 leaving behind all fear4 ,the ,lord is my ,shepherd1 ,i shall not want1 ,out to the mission field1 alone with ,him2 ,to tell the poor heathen that ,jesus has died2 ,breaking the bread to one and all1 ,telling them ,his death redeemed from the fall4 ,,bread ,,upon ,,the ,,waters ,from ,los ,angeles to ,nicaragua1 ,c4 ,a4 ,we sailed from ,los ,angeles1 on the ,s4 ,s4 ,curacao1 ,january #abth1 #aibj4 ,after five days we arrived at the port of ,matzalan1 ,mexico4 ,the first sight of the city was the large cathedral on the hill4 ,our boat came to anchor1 and as it was to stay a whole day1 we took a launch and went ashore4 ,the city was very beautiful1 nestling in the valley1 surrounded by mountains and sea4 ,the beach was thronged with bathers4 ,the streets and courts were lined with tropical flowers1 palm and cocoanut trees4 ,the sun was so warm that we were soon persuaded to remove our coats and sweaters1 and we stepped into a hotel court to rest4 ,we noticed one beggar after another coming in and asking alms4 ,going out into the streets again we noticed they seemed to be filled with poor1 ragged1 barefoot people begging4 ,on inquiry we were told this was 8,beggars' ,day10 when the poor came out and received help4 ,illustration3 ,s4 ,s4 ,curacao on which we sailed to the ,mission field ,as we sat in the plaza and saw all the sin and wickedness around us1 we were reminded of ,paul's experience at ,athens4 ,his spirit was stirred when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry1 and found the altar with the inscription1 8,to the unknown ,god40 ,truly our spirits were stirred when we saw the high spires on the cathedral1 and the altar within1 and realized that ,god was not known to the people4 ,the many beggars were a striking picture of the great need of the whole city4 ,the beggars' dirty rags told of their need of the robes of righteousness4 ,their bare feet showed the need of being shod with the preparation of the ,gospel of ,peace1 for truly they had no peace4 ,many of them were blind1 and surely they were blind to the truth4 ,beggars would come and touch us1 and ask alms4 ,like ,peter and ,john1 silver and gold we did not have1 but we could tell them of ,jesus1 and we did so4 ,but they were so blind and deaf they did not seem to know what we were talking about4 ,we were taken by a gentleman in a carriage to see the places of interest in the city1 which were many4 ,then we returned to the ship1 but found it would not be ready to sail for some time yet4 ,we seated ourselves on the deck and watched the many boats and launches that covered the waters4 ,the wind was strong and the waves ran high4 ,we saw a small row-boat with two men in it1 rowing hard for the shore4 ,it made me think of the great mass of people here who were being tossed by the waves of sin4 8,captain1 ,lower the ,gang-,plank for ,i am ,coming40 ,then the ,spirit gave me a picture of the sinner as the small boat tossed to and fro by the high waves of sin4 ,the large steamer1 with all her passengers1 very peaceful1 and with no toiling to keep afloat1 represented the children of ,god with all ,his cargo of love and grace in their souls4 ,they did not have to work to keep saved1 but ,he saved them and they were at home on the waters of ,his love4 ,i seemed to hear the ,lord say that as the waters of this mighty ocean could come in on that little boat1 and sink it beneath its waves1 never again to be found1 even so ,his great love for the sinner could come in on his frail bark of sin1 swallow it up1 and sink it in the sea of forgetfulness1 never again to be found4 ,darkness began to settle over the waters4 ,the whistle had blown1 the gang plank been pulled in1 and the vessel was slowly moving away4 ,suddenly we heard a cry coming over the waves1 8,captain1 lower the gang plank1 for ,i am coming40 ,in the dim evening light we could see a man standing in the launch that was coming as fast as it could4 ,again the cry came1 8,captain1 lower the gang plank1 for ,i am coming40 ,it was our freight clerk1 who had been ashore1 drinking and indulging in sin1 until he had almost missed his opportunity to get on board4 ,but at the captain's command they lowered the gang plank1 the clerk jumped on it and came on board4 ,illustration3 ,on ,board ,ship ,to me this taught a lesson4 ,the big ship ,salvation has pulled into the harbor of the needy1 the needy one comes in his little row-boat of trouble and cries for help1 and the gang plank1 the ,gospel of love1 is let down to him1 and he jumps on and is saved4 ,so1 as we go among these needy people1 in their little old row-boats toiling on the angry waters of sin1 we hope to see the dear old ,gospel ship of ,zion pull into many a harbor1 and lower the gang plank of love and mercy1 and see people jumping on and coming aboard for the glory-land4 ,for truly1 ,jesus is coming soon1 and what we do we must do quickly1 ere they perish4 ,at another port we had to wait a day for the unloading of cargo4 ,many natives came to the ship to sell birds and different things1 and we had a wonderful opportunity to give out the ,word of ,god to them4 ,how eager they were to hear of the love of ,god to save them4 ,one old man came up out of his little boat and said4 8,are there many people in your country who know about this great ,god1 and how ,he sent ,his ,son to die for us80 ,we told him there were many who knew about it4 ,then he said1 8,why don't they come and tell us about it and help us to find ,him40 ,we were speechless1 for we knew there were few who would leave all to tell them of ,jesus and ,his power to save4 8,i'll ,be ,waiting for ,you ,when ,your ,ship ,returns40 ,several little boys came on board from the many boats and lighters1 and played with ,carl4 ,he brought out his little train1 that ran on a track4 ,they had never seen anything like that before1 so they spent the day with him4 ,we gave each one tracts and a ,testament to carry home4 ,how their little dark faces did shine with delight when we told them of the love of ,jesus for every one of them1 and how ,god had sent us to tell the people to get ready1 for ,he was soon coming back to earth4 ,one little fellow was very much interested1 asking many questions about the ,bible and the tracts we had given him4 ,just then the bell rang1 and orders were given for every visitor to get off1 for the ship was ready to go4 ,as this dear little fellow took ,carl's hand and shook it he said1 8,i will be waiting for you when you come back4 ,i will wait every day till ,i see this ship return1 and then you can tell me more about ,jesus and how to find this peace you have40 ,he rowed away in a small boat1 and1 as far as we could see1 we saw his little hand waving1 and heard him saying1 8,i will be waiting for you when you come back40 ,how we wept1 for we knew we would not come that way again1 and realized that the little fellow might never again hear the ,gospel4 ,shall we fail to go to them with the bread of life8 ,illustration3 ,carl on bridge of ship at sea ,,the ,,stars ,,and ,,stripes ,,and ,,beautiful ,,manzanilla ,we reached ,manzanilla on ,january #aith4 ,pulling ourselves up on the dock out of the little boat that brought us ashore1 and walking a short distance1 we came to the street on the water front4 ,it was filled with people who had gathered to see the ship come in4 ,with eager faces they watched the unloading of the cargo4 ,we thought if only the many launches and boats that had gone to the ship for passengers and cargo could bring messengers and messages to this hungry people's souls1 what a blessed thing it would be6 ,we walked through the little city4 ,the streets were filled with barefoot men1 women1 and children1 many of whose clothes were ragged and dirty4 ,many pigs and sick dogs were roaming about eagerly hunting food1 which appeared to be scarce4 ,our hearts were touched4 ,as we looked up to ,heaven there came a cry from my soul for the deliverance of these people4 ,our attention was attracted by the ringing of a bell away up the mountain side4 ,there we saw a small white ,temple4 ,the people began to swarm up there1 answering the call of the bell4 ,we went up with them4 ,as we stepped inside the great iron gate that is kept closed at all other times1 but was now opened for the people to enter1 we saw the poor barefoot1 ragged creatures enter1 and kneeling down1 make the sign of the cross and worship the tall image before them1 then rise to their feet and pass out4 ,the floor of the temple was dirty1 and the seats covered with dust4 ,we were made to think of the ,scripture in ,isaiah #a3f3 8,from the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it2 but wounds1 and bruises1 and putrifying sores2 they have not been closed1 neither bound up1 neither mollified with ointment4 ,your country is desolate40 ,surely the whole country is devoid of the power and glory of the ,god who made them in ,his own image4 ,as we stood there in the gate of the temple1 we saw1 high up on the mountain1 the ,american flag waving in the ocean breezes4 ,the flag was on the home of the ,american consul4 ,it seemed to speak of freedom for that poor suffering people4 ,oh that ,god's children1 who have been touched by ,divine power and filled with ,god's love1 would go in upon the wings of faith and prayer1 lift the blood-stained banner of ,jesus1 and wave it o'er this desolate land till it resounds with the falling of the ,latter ,rain1 which is able to make it bud and bloom and bring forth fruit unto eternal life6 ,illustration3 ,some natives of a tribe in ,guatemala1 ,c4 ,a4 ,upon returning to our ship the burden was so heavy on me that ,i fell on my knees and cried to ,god to save these people4 ,then the ,lord said1 8,what thou seest1 write in a book1 and send it unto the churches40--,rev4 #a3aa1 #ai4 ,we saw men with bands around their heads holding great packs on their necks4 ,they were carrying loads from the boats which were bringing the ship's cargo to shore4 ,truly they were pictures of the spiritual bondage of the people staggering under their burdens of sin1 and with the yoke of the devil on their necks4 ,o1 my ,lord1 in travail of soul ,i cry1 ,that ,thou wilt hear and answer from the sky1 ,and send ,thy ,holy ,spirit down in power6 ,o let it fall1 my ,lord1 in a mighty shower6 ,o save this people from the tempter's snare6 ,let them in ,thy heavenly glory share-- ,save them1 ,o ,lord1 from sin and shame1 ,that they may know the power of ,jesus' name4 ,,salina ,,cruz1 ,,mexico4 ,my ,vision ,interpreted ,here ,god gave me the interpretation of the vision which ,i had when ,i was saved1 fifteen years before4 ,from under the altar where ,i was kneeling ,i saw a great white cloud boiling out1 full of upstretched black hands4 ,we were in ,mexican waters and there was some trouble at this port4 ,we expected to stay there about two days4 ,everyone was cautioned to be careful not to do or say anything that would stir up trouble4 ,as we had been giving out tracts and ,bibles at every port as we came down1 we thought to do the same here1 but we were told it would be dangerous to do so for it might cause a disturbance4 ,as we sat there and saw the dear people come down to the boat to sell things1 our hearts were stirred1 for we saw them as sheep having no shepherd4 ,a group of fruit peddlers was sitting near4 ,taking some ,spanish tracts and ,testaments1 ,i went over and talked to them as much as ,i could with my limited knowledge of the language1 and gave them ,gospel literature4 ,a crowd gathered around1 each holding out a hand for tracts4 ,even the custom house officers dressed in white1 as is customary in the tropics1 came over4 ,the people came running from all sides1 till soon ,i was pressed upon by them4 ,some flat cars were standing near4 ,i climbed upon one of these to get out of the press1 but the people climbed up1 too1 holding out their black hands for the little messengers4 ,there must have been two or three hundred crowding around4 ,illustration3 8,come over and help us0 ,as ,i was up there on that flat car looking down upon the poor hungry souls1 holding out their black hands for the ,bread of ,life1 ,i began to weep1 and to speak in tongues4 ,god spoke through me in ,spanish to these dear hearts1 telling them the story of the cross1 and how and why ,jesus died for us4 ,it must have been an hour that ,i stood there in the hot sun1 talking to them4 ,they wept and begged for more tracts to carry home to their loved ones4 ,one man1 who could speak ,english1 said to me1 8,we did not think you could speak our language so well10 then he told me what ,i had said4 ,and there my vision of the white cloud full of black hands was interpreted4 ,dressed in white1 they were reaching out black hands for the gospel4 ,shall they call in vain8 ,oh1 no6 ,we will carry to them the gospel1 the blessed story of ,jesus and ,his wonderful love4 ,they1 too1 shall be saved and ready when ,he comes4 ,in many places in ,mexico the power of ,god is falling4 ,in different kinds of idols4 ,sometimes they walk hundreds of miles to do penance to some stick of wood or piece of stone which has been set up by the priests4 ,we met one young man who told us he had been made to believe that this little image of black stone1 three and a half inches high1 can perform all sorts of miracles such as opening blind eyes1 healing the deaf1 and driving away evil spirits4 leave home1 friends1 and loved ones1 and go out1 not knowing whither they go8 ,they will have to eat native foods that are unclean and unwholesome1 and which may cause fevers and various sicknesses4 ,they may have to sleep in old dirty native huts1 where mosquitos1 scorpions1 bats1 and vermin will attack them4 ,nevertheless ,god is calling now1 as ,he called in ,isaiah's day1 8,,who ,,will ,,go ,,for ,,us80 ,jesus is ,coming ,soon6 ,the message must go forth regardless of the cost4 ,as we went aboard the ship1 the ,lord said to me1 8,cast thy bread upon the waters40 ,many dear souls were reached by the tracts on the different vessels upon which we traveled4 ,to ,god be all the glory6 ,eternity alone will reveal the number who received the ,gospel in this way4 ,passengers and crews alike read the tracts1 and called for more4 ,people from all parts of the world have taken the little messengers with them and as they have grasped our hands with a hearty 8,good-bye1 and ,god bless you in your work10 our own souls have been blessed and refreshed1 for we have seen the ,word of ,god1 that liveth and abideth forever1 finding its way into the hearts of men and women4 ,people who were sick and afflicted1 traveling in search of health1 have heard the message of healing through ,jesus ,christ1 and have been healed1 as we told them of the body of ,christ that was broken for us1 and that by ,his stripes we were healed4 ,souls who had sought comfort and rest in various religions1 hearing the story of the cross1 and of how ,jesus died that we might live1 have accepted ,him1 and gone on their way rejoicing4 8,cast thy bread upon the waters1 for thou shalt find it after many days40 ,eccles4 #aa3a4 ,we know that when we reach the pearly gates of ,heaven we shall see many who have been redeemed from sin1 because they read and heard the ,bread of the ,word1 which we cast upon the waters4 ,while we were giving out tracts and ,testaments to the people who came to sell fruit and birds in one port in ,mexico1 we met a ,mexican who had never heard the ,gospel1 or seen a ,bible or a missionary before4 ,i gave him a tract1 in his own language1 on the second coming of the ,lord4 ,he looked at the tract1 then at me1 and then said1 8,what is this for80 ,i told him it was a tract telling of the soon coming of ,jesus back to this earth again4 ,i could not speak or understand much ,spanish4 ,he said1 8,i will read it1 then bring someone to interpret for me1 for ,i want to know more about this40 ,he went away1 and in a few minutes came back with a young man who could speak ,english1 for his interpreter4 ,he asked me where ,i heard the ,lord was soon coming back again4 ,i said ,i had read it in the ,bible1 and that ,god was pouring out the ,holy ,spirit upon the earth in these last days2 that thousands were receiving the ,spirit1 and that the ,holy ,spirit is revealing to the people that ,jesus is coming soon4 ,he then told us he had been going all over ,mexico1 ,central and ,south ,america1 visiting idols and saints1 walking several thousands of miles1 carrying heavy loads of gifts to these idols in the attempt to get peace of soul1 but had not found it4 ,at last1 sick and weary1 and in despair1 he gave up4 ,he was wondering if there were a ,god and had asked that if there were ,he should make ,himself known to him in some way4 ,then he said he saw a great1 strong man coming up out of the sea1 so powerful that he could make every nation of the world bow to him4 ,this man destroyed the ,pope of ,rome and the ,catholic ,church1 built a great church for himself1 and sought to compel all the world to worship him1 but there were many who would not do this1 so he made war against them1 killing them all1 and the earth was covered with blood4 ,the people called on ,god to stop the terrible war and take away this man from the earth4 ,then ,jesus came on a great white horse with many angels following him1 destroyed the wicked man1 and set up a beautiful kingdom of peace1 in which everyone was so happy1 and the whole earth became a great beautiful garden4 ,illustration3 ,a ,native ,village ,then this ,mexican said1 8,i felt very happy in my heart1 and had such great peace of mind40 ,he had prayed ,god to send someone to tell him more of this way4 ,he said he was very astonished to find someone giving out tracts on the ship4 ,always before when he made his trips he saw only gambling and dancing1 but this time he found people preaching the ,gospel4 ,he went away happy1 to tell his people he had found the ,bible and the ,way of ,life4 ,he talked to all the ,mexicans on board1 telling them how ,god had answered his prayer4 ,one man1 who owned a gold mine in ,mexico1 and had been in the ,united ,states and was returning1 told us1 as we were giving out literature to the people1 that we were the first missionaries he ever met coming that way4 ,he said he had been in ,mexico forty years1 had made many trips back and forth1 but had met no ,christians in those parts before4 ,he himself knew something of the ,gospel1 and was glad to have the papers1 and told us of the great need among the people there4 ,oh6 shall not we who have received this great outpouring of the ,spirit1 cry1 as did the holy ones in ,isaiah1 8,holy1 holy1 holy1 is ,jehovah of hosts60 till the whole earth be filled with ,his glory8 ,as ,i write in the hot state-room of the ship1 my soul is full of glory1 and my hands are being moved over the typewriter by the power of the ,spirit1 while ,he tells me that ,jesus is coming soon1 that we must work fast1 and open our souls to ,himself until we are filled with ,his power and glory1 so that the people with whom we come in contact will know we have been with ,him1 and learned of ,him4 ,a young man came to me and said1 8,i heard you praying in your state-room this morning4 ,may ,i come in next time when you have prayer8 ,i want to know about the ,gospel40 ,we had given him a ,testament4 ,the next morning he came and knelt with us and prayed to the ,lord to save him4 ,he arose1 with his face shining with the glory of ,god1 saying1 8,won't you come to my country and tell my people about ,jesus8 ,my mother has been making long trips to worship #8,the ,black ,christ' in the great temple on the ,honduras border1 but she hasn't found peace4 ,won't you come and tell her of this wonderful salvation80 ,we corresponded with him later1 sending him tracts and papers1 and he is going on with the ,lord4 ,won't you pray that ,god will raise up someone who will go to them with the ,gospel before it is too late8 ,as ,i have already said1 ,central and ,south ,america are opening their eyes1 and fast turning from ,romanism4 ,they are accepting ,spiritualism1 ,new ,thought1 ,christian ,science1 and all kinds of false religions1 because the true ,gospel is not being preached to them4 ,shall we not awake1 rise up1 go forth with the message of the cross1 and reach these people before they are destroyed with these awful things8 ,a man from ,honduras1 who had been in the ,states studying ,new ,thought1 was returning with several boxes of books to sell to the people4 ,this dear young man had never heard the ,gospel4 ,he said he found that ,rome was keeping the people in ignorance4 ,having met some ,new ,thought teachers in his country1 he had been to the ,states and studied ,new ,thought for a year1 and was now returning to teach it to his people1 who1 he said1 were anxious to have him do so4 ,we gave him a ,bible1 the first he had ever seen1 and he read it every day4 ,we talked and prayed with him until he was saved1 for the dear old ,word of ,god always wins its way into the hearts of men4 ,he threw the ,new ,thought books overboard and went on his way with tracts1 ,testaments and ,bibles for his people1 rejoicing that he had found the true ,god4 ,let us pray for this precious soul1 that ,god will greatly use him4 ,he is a finely educated young man1 whose influence will tell on his countrymen4 ,oh6 how glad we were we had been led to take that boat1 and had had the opportunity to give the ,bread of ,life to that hungry man6 ,god had led us on that very ship1 and certainly we were blessed as we cast the ,word of ,god forth and saw many people running after it4 ,there is a great ministry on the ships1 not only to passengers1 but also to the officers and crews4 ,they spend all their time on the water1 and do not have any opportunity to hear the ,gospel1 only as it is taken to them4 ,another man1 a ,jew1 was very sick1 had been for a long time4 ,he was traveling for his health4 ,as my husband spoke to him about the ,lord and told him ,god could heal him1 he said1 8,well1 ,i will come right into your room now and have you pray for me4 ,i am suffering so1 ,i can't live until ,i reach my destination if ,i do not get relief40 ,he came in and we prayed for him1 and anointed him with oil in the name of the ,lord1 asking ,god to touch his body4 ,instantly he threw up his hands and began to say1 8,glory6 ,glory6 ,glory60 ,the power fell on him1 and he was saved and healed4 ,as he left the boat he took with him some tracts and a ,testament1 and1 best of all1 the glory of ,god in his soul4 ,he declared he was going to preach the ,gospel1 and he began right on the ship4 ,he was so filled with the power and glory of ,god he could not keep from telling it4 ,here was one more poor suffering soul who received the ,bread of ,life that was cast upon the waters1 and who went on his way rejoicing1 to tell the glad news to other suffering ones4 ,let us not be weary in well doing1 but rise up in faith and go forth in ,jesus' ,name1 casting our bread upon the waters1 for we shall find it bringing forth life4 ,a woman that ,i spoke to became so interested that she came every day for tracts and papers to read4 ,i also gave her some good books on the second coming of the ,lord1 and on salvation4 ,she1 too1 was saved1 and went away with her suitcase full of the ,word of ,god to give to her people4 8,with this blessed hope before us1 ,let no harp remain unstrung1 ,let the mighty heavenly chorus ,onward roll from tongue to tongue2 ,christ is coming2 ,come thou blessed ,prince of ,peace40 ,,arriving ,,in ,,our ,,port ,,at ,,nicaragua ,nearing ,nicaragua1 in the distance we saw three mountain peaks1 and were told that was the ,port of ,corinto1 where we were to land4 ,as the ship moved on1 we could see the light-house1 its white head towering high in the air pointing out the way we were to go4 ,the scenery was beautiful4 ,cocoanut and palm trees lined the beach4 ,the sea was calm and we slowly moved into the harbor1 getting a good view of the little city spread out before us4 ,great peace settled down over our souls1 and the ,holy ,spirit whispered to us that we were in ,his will4 ,i stepped into my stateroom and opened my ,bible1 and this passage came to my sight3 8,the ,lord shall guide thee continually1 and satisfy thy soul in drouth1 and make fat thy bones2 and thou shalt be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not40--,isa4 #eh3aa4 ,we had cabled ,brother ,schoenich to meet us1 but our boat arrived two days earlier than scheduled1 and on going ashore1 we found he was not there4 ,we went to work1 speaking some ,english and a little ,spanish1 and making many signs and gestures4 ,the next morning ,brother ,schoenich arrived1 and worked faithfully1 helping to get our things through the customs house4 ,after seeing that everything was ready for the coretta 7oxcart7 ride to ,matagalpa1 we took train for ,leon4 ,illustration3 ,picturesque ,street ,scene of the ,port of ,corinto1 where we landed ,illustration3 ,resting during the heat of the day ,arriving at ,leon we went to the home of one of the native ,christians4 ,the food was strange and new to us1 but it came from a heart of love4 ,the next day was ,sunday1 and a company of dear ones1 who had been baptized in the ,holy ,spirit1 met for worship4 ,brother ,schoenich preached to them1 admonishing them to stand true4 ,they had no pastor1 but were going on with the ,lord4 ,next morning we went to the market to buy food for our three days' trip on mule back4 ,we found some of the saints there4 ,they were reading their ,bibles1 and witnessing for ,jesus in the midst of the priests and thousands of ,catholics4 ,they had their walls covered with scripture mottoes4 ,when saved1 these people make good soldiers for ,jesus1 enduring hardness joyfully4 ,they remember the pit from whence they were digged4 ,bidding them good-bye1 we prepared our lunch1 mounted our mules1 and rode until about ten o'clock that night4 ,stopping at a camp ground for coretta travelers1 we lit our candles1 ate our meal1 strung up our hammocks1 and lay down to rest amid the lowing of the many oxen4 ,all coffee and freight is moved to and from the interior on oxcarts 7corettas in ,spanish74 ,the next morning we made our toilet in and by the large trough where the mules and oxen were watered4 ,after eating breakfast under the shed of the native hut1 we were off for our day's travel4 ,at noon we stopped again at a little house on the hillside for food and water4 ,while waiting for the meal to be prepared we strung up our hammocks for a rest4 ,our bodies were very tired1 as we had never ridden horseback before4 ,by this time we felt better down than up4 ,brother ,schoenich1 being accustomed to these trips1 did not tire so easily1 so he gathered the family together and preached to them4 ,it was the first time they had heard the ,gospel4 ,about five o'clock we again mounted our beasts1 and traveled until midnight4 ,we passed over some rough country1 the many wild parrots and birds seemed to be screeching and singing to the dusty1 wayworn travelers4 ,once in a while we got a hot breath from the great volcano in the distance whose smoke we could see billowing up towards the clouds4 ,again we had supper by candle-light1 then hung up our swinging beds in the corridor of an adobe house1 and rested till the dawn1 when we heard the now familiar alarm1 the braying of our faithful mules1 who seemed to want to be traveling4 ,we arose1 dressed1 and soon were off4 ,illustration3 ,where they heard the ,gospel for the first time ,at noon we stopped again for rest and for food4 ,the food they offered was so seasoned with flies and worms that we decided to buy a chicken and cook it ourselves4 ,we bought a 8fryer0 but it proved to be an old hen of many years4 ,we were invited by our hostess to come into her kitchen to fry our fowl4 ,as we were trying to get the earthen pot fixed on the fire1 which was made in a sort of furnace in the corner1 the smoke poured out into the room4 ,we noticed some strange sights in that kitchen4 ,in one corner a nice fat pig was having his noon-day swim in a trough of slop that had been arranged for his benefit4 ,meanwhile a large red rooster lifted up his merry 8cock-a-doodle-doo0 above the noise of all the rest of the fowls and animals that filled the place4 ,we managed to get the old hen smoked as well as fried1 and as we went out to place it on the small table which had been fixed for us1 we discovered ,brother ,schoenich had gathered a company together and in his enthusiastic way was preaching to them1 showing them that worshiping the ,virgin ,mary and the santos1 7saints71 and learning catechisms1 etc41 was not the true religion of the ,bible4 ,they listened with great interest1 asking many questions about the ,bible4 ,after our meal we lay down on some boards to rest1 and fell asleep1 only to be awakened by the chattering of many little voices4 ,on investigating we found the children were having school in one room1 all reading at the same time1 taking turns at the door with a stick to keep the pigs and chickens out4 ,we left there and traveled until dark1 then stopped for the night4 ,rising early the next morning we traveled several leagues1 and then came in sight of the lovely little city of ,matagalpa1 nestling at the foot of the mountains4 ,the only evil and unlovely thing1 there1 was man1 who has sinned and gone far away from ,god4 ,dear ,sister ,schoenich and some of the native ,christians came out to meet us1 as ,isaac came out to meet ,rebekah4 ,we alighted1 had a drink of water1 and rested a little before going into town4 ,we certainly were glad to see the entrance-gate to our new home1 which was1 ,i think1 the largest gate ,i had ever seen4 ,we thought of our entrance through the gate of ,heaven1 after our long1 weary journey through this world of sin and sorrow4 ,on dismounting1 we were met by some more of our dear brown-faced friends who had gathered to greet the new missionaries4 ,when we saw their faces shining with the glory of ,god1 and heard them sing the praises of ,jesus we were refreshed in soul and body4 ,after a few hours of rest we were able to go into the meeting and help push the battle for our ,king4 ,we will work here with ,brother and ,sister ,schoenich for a while1 for they have a large work1 and need help4 ,they are much worn in body after almost eight years on the field1 and need a furlough4 ,pray for us4 ,the fields are white unto harvest1 and the laborers are few4 ,we want to bring some glad trophies home to ,god4 ,illustration3 ,an ,indian ,hut ,where ,we ,preached the ,gospel ,illustration3 ,indian girls grinding corn for tortillas ,,our ,,stay ,,in ,,matagalpa ,our stay in ,matagalpa was a very pleasant and profitable one in many ways4 ,it was a great pleasure to see the way ,god worked among the dear natives4 ,they were delighted to come and worship the ,lord1 and anxious to see others of their people brought into the fold4 ,the awful sins and idolatry of these people are beyond our power to describe4 ,we had been there about four days when ,brother and ,sister ,schoenich were called to one of their other stations over in the mountains4 ,perhaps you can imagine us poor little folks there without the language1 taking care of the station and carrying on the meetings while they were away4 ,rising very early to help them off before the sun was hot1 we bade them good-bye1 then turned our faces toward ,heaven and asked ,god to help us1 for we were there1 and must be brave soldiers1 not get frightened and run away from the battle4 ,the ,holy ,spirit fell upon us1 and the ,lord spoke to us saying ,he would be mouth and wisdom unto us4 ,as we stepped into the corridor leading from the yard1 we met our first problem1 which was to speak to one who knew only the ,spanish language1 with no one to interpret for us4 ,the man from the finca 7little farm7 had come in to ask for the hammer4 ,he talked and laughed1 and we all talked and laughed1 and tried to see whether we could get what he wanted4 ,we brought him the horses1 the harness1 and almost everything in the kitchen4 ,at last we took him into the tool room to let him see if what he wanted was there1 and he picked up the hammer4 ,ever after that we remembered the ,spanish word for hammer4 ,but1 oh my6 there was a pile of things lying all over the corridor to be picked up and put in their places4 ,however1 it was a very effectual way to get the language4 ,next the girl in the kitchen must be told what to cook for dinner4 ,into the kitchen ,i went1 knowing the mountain was before me1 and must be surmounted1 and ,i meant1 by the help of the ,lord1 to go over the top4 ,putting out the things for her to cook1 ,i showed her by signs1 as much as possible1 how they were to be fixed4 ,she did pretty well and the meals were good4 ,but the worst was to come4 ,the next morning was ,sunday1 and there were the dear natives gathering into the chapel4 ,what were we to do8 ,oh1 we felt so helpless6 ,down on our faces we went to ask ,god to come upon us that day1 and fill us with his power and pour out the ,spirit on all the dear people4 ,we took our ,spanish song books1 and went in1 and played and sang the hymns the best we could4 ,we had learned to say1 8,let us pray10 so we knelt down and1 we in ,english1 and they in ,spanish1 poured out our supplications before the ,lord1 and the power fell4 ,we were there over two hours1 just worshiping the ,lord1 and the language was well understood by all1 for the ,holy ,spirit did the speaking and worshiping1 and we did not make an effort to do anything4 ,oh1 how we did feel the mighty presence of the ,holy ,one that day6 ,illustration3 ,alma and her music class in ,matagalpa ,illustration3 ,washday at the river for native women ,their only way to clean clothes is to rub them on a flat rock ,the next day many new things came up4 ,first there was the laundry to send out1 then the marketing to be done4 ,we all rose early1 got our ,spanish grammars1 and1 by the time the woman came for the washing1 we were ready to speak a few words to her about it4 ,then we studied what to say at the market1 and my husband came home with some of the things we wanted1 and some things we didn't want1 but we were learning the language right along4 ,i wanted to season something with butter1 so called to the cook to hurry and bring it to me4 ,i thought she was awfully slow4 ,hearing a great noise behind me1 ,i turned and saw her leading the horse into the kitchen4 ,i had asked for the horse1 instead of the butter1 to put into the cooking4 ,after a hearty laugh from all of us1 ,i went into my room for my ,spanish grammar and looked up the word for butter1 to be sure ,i should not make that mistake again4 ,things were going pretty well by this time1 except for the few mistakes we made occasionally4 ,the next thing ,i called for was a spoon1 with which to eat my soup4 ,they brought the broom in1 and laid it on the table4 ,i couldn't very well eat soup with the broom1 so sent it back and kept asking for a spoon1 until either ,i had the word right1 or they guessed what ,i wanted1 ,i don't know which4 ,we employed a teacher and every morning for a couple of hours we studied the language4 ,this was a great help4 ,we soon were able to ask for butter or spoons with no such mistakes1 and before long we could sing and read our ,bibles quite well1 also give our testimonies in ,spanish4 ,from day to day we could note the progress we made in learning the language4 ,then came the day when ,brother and ,sister ,schoenich returned home4 ,they were tired and worn1 for they had been working very hard in the meetings while away1 and we wished we could take all the burdens from them1 and let them rest4 ,but there were many things to attend to4 ,they went right to printing the paper1 toiling almost day and night1 not sparing themselves one moment4 ,these dear souls have come into this dark land of sin and idolatry and laid down their lives for the ,gospel4 ,let us hold them up in prayer and by our means4 ,let every reader of this book breathe a prayer to ,god for these dear workers4 ,their bodies are tired and worn and they need a rest very badly4 ,may the ,lord of the harvest send forth laborers to this dark land to take their place long enough for them to have a furlough4 ,many were the precious lessons of faith and love we learned from them for which we praise ,god4 ,illustration3 ,where we stopped for the night ,note the glare of the sun on the white sand ,illustration3 ,alma and ,carl among the banana trees ,the days went by4 ,three months passed4 ,we had no thought of leaving1 until one day while we were out giving tracts to the ,indians as they passed by1 ,god spoke to me and said1 8,go to ,leon40 ,we didn't see how we could possibly do that1 for we had so little of the language1 and no money to go with1 and it would take at least seventy-five dollars4 ,but as we waited before the ,lord1 we were sure it was ,his dear will4 ,then we asked for the means to be sent for the oxcart to carry our baggage over the mountains4 ,the next mail brought a draft for just the amount needed4 ,brother and ,sister ,schoenich told us that before ,sister ,yeagges' death she had said the ,lord showed her we were the missionaries for ,leon4 ,at that time we had never met any of the workers1 but had been merely corresponding with them4 ,then there was the packing of our things in preparation for the trip1 which was a long tiresome one over the mountains and plains under the tropical sun4 ,we worked hard1 and in one week were off4 ,brother ,schoenich took us down on his mules1 which was very kind of him4 ,his heart is in the work in this country1 and he has been willing to make every sacrifice to get the ,gospel to these people4 ,,leaving ,,matagalpa ,,for ,,leon ,after seeing our trunks and baggage loaded on the oxcart1 and started on the way1 we set about to prepare a lunch for the trip1 as the only food available while traveling through the country is tortillas1 7corn cakes71 and frijoles1 7beans71 and many times one cannot even get these1 for the people are very poor1 many of them living on roots and leaves from certain trees4 ,illustration3 ,leaving ,matagalpa ,illustration3 ,leaving in the early morning for a day's journey ,after saying good-bye to ,sister ,schoenich1 and to the native ,christians who had gathered to see us off1 we mounted our beasts and were soon on our way through the little village1 waving good-bye to the many friends we had met while there4 ,the road being very good for some distance we had several races1 and we remarked how clean we then were1 but how different we would look on reaching our destination4 ,the sun was just sinking behind the western hills and we could see the natives driving in the animals for the night4 ,as we rode on we saw the hills were all on fire1 for the custom there is to burn all the shrubbery before planting crops4 ,as we saw the great flames winding their way up the tall trees1 and flashing into the air1 burning up the thorns and briers1 and leaving the ground clean so the seed which was to be planted might grow1 there came to my mind the thought that even so1 the power and fire of ,god could fall on that country and burn up all the awful sin and idolatry which was binding those people1 so that the ,word of ,god could be sowed and bring forth fruit in their lives4 ,and there arose from our hearts1 a cry to our ,heavenly ,father to send out ,his messengers into that needy land to light the fires of the ,holy ,spirit1 till sin should be burned1 and the people be freed4 8,send down ,thy power1 ,o ,lord6 ,and let ,thy mercy flow1 ,till all the people of this land ,shall ,thy salvation know40 ,riding until about #aj o'clock1 passing over some very rough road1 we reached a little village4 ,being very tired and hungry1 we decided to stop here for the night4 ,we hung our swinging beds up in the shed of the native hut1 which was used for a saloon1 and after eating our scanty meal by candle-light1 we committed ourselves to the keeping of the ,one who never slumbers nor sleeps1 then lay down to rest amid the talking of many other travelers1 who were stopping there for the night4 ,each one carried in his belt a big revolver1 and a machette 7a large knife71 which all the people1 even the children1 carry1 and with which they kill one another1 when they become angry4 ,nevertheless we were conscious of the angels camping around us1 and there was no fear in our hearts4 ,awakening next morning very early1 we arose and brushed off the dust which covered us from the constant traveling on the road1 near which we had been sleeping1 for the people travel all through the night1 as in the day the sun is very hot4 ,we ate our breakfast again by candle-light1 and after our morning prayer1 we mounted and were off for a day's trip4 ,though our bodies were very tired we went on singing and praising ,god for the glorious privilege of carrying the ,gospel message to that dark land4 ,we rode until about noon1 when we came to a stream of water which looked very refreshing to us4 ,the poor animals were so glad to see that water that when they got in it they drank1 and drank1 and drank4 ,we spread our lunch on the sand1 and washed ourselves and drank heartily1 for that was the first water we had seen for two days except the little the natives had given us to drink4 ,then came one who told us that just upstream all the dead animals of the neighborhood were thrown in4 ,but we claimed the promise1 that 8,if ye drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt you40--,mark #af3ah4 ,after a rest for ourselves and beasts1 we were again on our way4 ,the sun being very hot by this time we prayed that the ,lord would send a cloud over it1 which ,he did4 ,praise ,his ,holy ,name6 8,the sun shall not smite you by day40 ,we went on1 passing over great rocks and boulders4 ,the mules had to climb up and over them until at times it was impossible for new and inexperienced riders as we were1 to stay in the saddles4 ,however1 some of us missed our saddles only a few times and took a tumble4 ,illustration3 ,alma and ,carl feeding the pet deer ,illustration3 ,on our way through the mountains ,sister ,finney1 putting her confidence in a broken part on the back of her saddle1 fell off as she was going up a steep place1 and after standing on her head for an instant1 rolled down the bank1 the mule stepping on her chest4 ,rising1 she praised the ,lord that ,he had sent ,his angel and delivered her4 ,she mounted1 and we were off again1 after finding she was not hurt4 ,evidently ,i did not have so much faith in the matter of falling off mules1 and rolling round amid the rocks1 for while passing through a very deep cut1 with high banks on either side1 the mule which ,i was riding pushed against the bank1 and having a bad saddle1 ,i lost my hold and fell under the animal's feet4 ,she was kind enough not to step on the poor missionary who was such an inexperienced rider1 but who had been called to learn1 and she very carefully stepped over me4 ,i was picked up1 and1 after a little prayer-meeting there in the dust1 ,i was able to remount and ride on to our destination1 thirty-five miles away4 ,god wonderfully blessed me and the ,holy ,spirit came upon me1 and ,i sang and praised the ,lord in tongues--with interpretation4 ,all the way ,i felt the strong arm of ,jesus upholding me4 ,on arriving my foot was found to be badly broken and crushed1 and so swollen that ,i could hardly remove my shoe4 ,praise the ,lord6 ,he came down and blessed my soul1 and touched my body6 ,how ,his love did burn in my heart6 ,as the devil seemed to be angry ,i felt that ,i was surely called to preach the ,gospel in that place4 ,the power went through my poor1 crushed and swollen foot until it was entirely straightened1 for it had been so twisted that my toes were behind1 and my heel was in front4 ,i could feel the bones set and straightened as the mighty power surged through like bolts of electricity4 ,i did not stop preaching although for a time ,i was unable to put my foot to the floor1 but the people came to me1 sitting there in the house1 to ask about the ,gospel4 ,one night ,i felt the healing touch so strong that ,i knew ,i could walk1 so1 arising next morning1 ,i attempted to put on my shoe1 but it would not even go over my toes4 ,nevertheless1 ,i praised ,god1 laced the shoe on the other foot1 ready to walk1 and then kept pulling at the other shoe until it went on4 ,soon it was laced up and ,i was ready to walk4 ,i went into the meetings1 and have been going ever since1 and that foot is as good as it ever was4 ,how we do praise ,jesus that we can suffer for ,his name's sake4 ,no warrior returns from battle without wounds1 or marks of hardships endured1 and one national hero declared he was sorry that he had but one life to give for his country4 ,much more should we endure and give1 who are fighting for our ,heavenly country under the leadership of our great ,captain1 ,king ,jesus4 ,illustration3 ,carl with his faithful pony ,illustration3 ,bringing coffee down from the mountain plantations ,we have heard the ,macedonian call1 8,come ,over and ,help ,us10 and the love of ,god constrains us1 so 8onward we must go1 regardless of the foe40 ,truly these dear people are calling for us to come and give them the ,gospel4 ,shall we fail and allow them to perish without the knowledge of the love of ,him1 who so freely died to save them8 ,late one afternoon we arrived at a small village1 and being tired from the hard day's travel we decided to stay for the night1 but when we stopped1 ready to dismount1 we were told that ,robbers had swept down from the mountains on the towns and villages of that district1 had robbed the people1 and driven off their stock4 ,the soldiers had been sent out1 and already one battle had been fought1 and more trouble was brewing1 so it was very dangerous for us to be traveling4 ,we looked to the ,lord for guidance1 and felt that we must lose no time1 but taking the ,blood for our protection1 should move on4 ,arising at two o'clock the next morning we went over the road on which the robbers were supposed to be1 through a dense forest1 but saw nor heard nothing except the many parrots and birds1 screeching and singing4 ,we made seventeen leagues that day1 crossing mountains and plains1 stopping at noon at a little hut by the roadside for food for the beasts and rest for ourselves4 ,we were received with much hospitality by these people1 with their bamboo covered house1 its walls composed of a few sticks stuck up at intervals4 ,the entire inside had on its dress of mourning from the smoke from the family cook-stove1 which was a pile of rocks in one corner4 ,while the woman was making us a fresco of gourd seed1 7a favorite drink they make there71 grinding the seeds on the tortilla stone1 the old mother pig and her babies were having a real jubilee under the rickety table4 ,in that country hogs seem to be the family pets1 for in every house there are many of them4 ,the beds were merely a few sticks covered with a rawhide4 ,other sticks surmounted by a rough board served for a table1 and a black smutty pile of rocks was the stove4 ,these articles completed the home furnishings4 ,the host was poor1 but oh1 how he and his family listened to the ,gospel story6 ,this is the picture of thousands of homes in that country4 ,the people are exceedingly poor1 but hungry for the ,bread of ,life4 ,how we enjoyed preaching the ,gospel to them6 ,although there were numerous hardships to endure1 it was sweet to be in ,god's will1 and to tell these dear ones of ,his great love for1 and ,his desire to save them4 ,reaching our next stopping place late in the evening we camped for the night4 ,after we women were in our hammocks1 and the men had seen the animals put away for the night1 they went for a swim in a nearby stream4 ,when their swim was finished1 they found the stream was the home of some large ,alligators but1 praise ,god6 ,he is the same as when ,he stopped the lions' mouths for ,daniel4 ,certainly ,he does care for ,his little children4 ,illustration3 ,the only ,jesus they know ,illustration3 ,one of the first to accept the ,gospel ,the ,god of ,daniel was great and strong ,stopping the lions' mouths1 and filling his heart with song4 ,rising before daybreak we sent up a thanks-giving to our ,heavenly ,father for ,his safe-keeping through the night1 and asked ,him to protect us that day4 ,then we loaded our beds and other belongings upon the mules and went on our way4 ,that day's journey brought us over a part of the country which was covered with great rocks and boulders thrown from ,nicaragua's largest volcano1 ,el ,momotombo4 ,in the distance we could see the volcano belching forth smoke1 and the heat was intense4 ,about one hundred years ago this volcano completely destroyed the city of ,leon1 leaving a great lake filled with water1 which is there today4 ,the dust was very deep in the roads1 because of the extensive traveling4 ,it rolled up about us in a great cloud4 ,many times we could not see each other a few feet away4 ,we resembled a miniature whirlwind coming down the road1 and surely we were a whirlwind coming against the devil4 ,the enemy would fain stir up a storm to strangle ,god's people and prevent them from invading the territory he has so long held1 but we would not be intimidated4 ,souls were at stake4 ,they were being held in prison1 behind bars of iron1 but their cries had reached ,heaven and ,god had sent some of ,his messengers with the glad news of freedom4 ,the message must be delivered1 regardless of the cost1 so over mountain and plain we went1 covered with dust1 faint from much traveling through long1 hot days1 but on to the people with the message that ,jesus died to set them free4 8,will we ever think of trials1 will we ever think of pain1 ,or the crosses we've endured for ,jesus' sake1 ,on that ,hallelujah morning as we gather round the throne1 ,and with ,jesus of the marriage feast partake8 ,let us hasten with the message which ,he said was meant for all4 ,to the black1 the white1 the yellow1 and the brown2 ,of one blood ,he made all nations1 we must win them all for ,him4 ,precious jewels to adorn the ,savior's crown40 ,toward dusk we came in sight of a little adobe house1 and were told that we might stop there for the night4 ,how nice it was to see a place where we could rest our tired bodies1 wash ourselves and comb our hair4 ,for three days we had been unable to comb our hair or wash ourselves for water was too scarce4 ,how wonderful it will be when we earth-travelers pass on our way to that ,city which hath foundations1 whose builder and maker is ,god1 where we shall see dear ,jesus and hear ,him say1 8,come1 ,my children1 into the mansions ,i have prepared for you40 ,the residents of that city 8shall hunger no more1 neither thirst any more1 neither shall the sun light on them1 nor any heat4 ,for the ,lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them1 and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters1 and ,god shall wipe away all tears from their eyes40--,rev4 #g3af1ag4 ,how blessed to know ,jesus has gone to prepare a place for us6 ,how the very thought thrills my soul1 and causes me to want to work to help bring others into those mansions6 ,illustration3 ,carl and his father1 as they distributed tracts to the ,indians by the roadside4 ,while talking with the natives1 they told us that ,a ,large ,tiger had come down from the mountains and1 after killing two cows and injuring several more1 had escaped4 ,they were greatly frightened1 as the animal was still in the neighborhood1 but we lay down under the shed1 and went to sleep1 awakening just when the sun was coming up through the trees4 ,we hustled and dressed1 and after ordering some hot milk from the people there1 we mounted for another day's journey4 ,we went down the road in the direction which the tiger had taken4 ,the natives warned us that we were likely to meet the ferocious animal in the forest not far away1 but we went on1 singing the sweet songs of ,zion1 and trusting ourselves to ,his keeping1 who said1 8,i will give you power over all the power of the enemy40 ,a tiger was a very small thing compared to the awful monster of sin which had ravaged the whole country4 ,we realized that the ,king's business demanded haste1 so we passed on1 and rode over the dusty road unmolested4 ,the blessed ,holy ,spirit filled our hearts with joy at the thought of soon reaching the place where we should have meetings with the dear faithful little band of ,christians who were awaiting4 ,,our ,,arrival ,,in ,,leon ,our arrival in the city aroused much curiosity among the people4 ,as we passed through the streets they came out of their houses and followed us to see where we were going4 ,when we came in sight of the house where lived a ,christian woman1 who had suffered much at the hands of her people1 she came out to meet us4 ,the power fell on her1 and she danced for joy1 and we wept and shouted4 ,a crowd soon gathered to see what had occurred1 and we had a meeting right there1 telling them of the ,savior's love and ,his willingness to save them from all sin1 and to present them faultless before ,his ,father4 ,these people had persecuted this dear sister for ten years after she was saved4 ,they would come and whip her1 throw her goods into the street1 and tell her they would kill her if she did not turn back into the ,roman church1 but she stood true1 and now had the ,baptism of the ,spirit1 and in her house we had our meetings4 ,we slept on cow hides for beds1 with a straw mat under us4 ,we ate our food out of gourds for two weeks until our things came and we could get a house4 ,it was sweet to be in the ,master's dear service4 ,illustration3 ,street ,scene in ,leon ,the city of ,leon is anti-,american because it is the headquarters of the ,liberal party1 which is trying to overthrow the rule of the church of ,rome4 ,the ,united ,states appointed a president twelve years ago1 thus stopping the revolution then in progress4 ,as the president is a church man the ,liberal party hasn't much love for an ,american4 ,this was a difficulty which we had before us4 ,not only were missionaries hated1 but we were ,american missionaries1 which was far worse4 ,we looked to the ,father for a house in which we might live1 and preach the ,gospel to these dear people4 ,a man came to us and said we could have a house1 so we moved in the following day4 ,it was a poor thing to call a house1 being dirty1 and infested with scorpions1 lizards1 and a species of ant which builds a big mud house and eats not only one's clothes but also the furniture4 ,we were situated between two saloons and houses of ill-fame1 right in the slum district4 ,people danced1 drank and caroused all night in these places4 ,it was a pretty good place in which to open fire on the enemy1 being right in the midst of his works4 ,when an army advances to fight the enemy it goes to the strongest point4 ,on one side of our house1 which was built of thin lumber1 there were cracks in the wall1 and we could look through the cracks into the saloon4 ,we remembered the scripture which says we are not to light a candle and put it under a bushel1 but on a candle stick1 so all can see2 so we would get out our little organ and sing and play1 then kneel and pray1 and the people would peep through at us4 ,we were told they might throw rocks at us1 and burn down the house1 and might even kill us1 but we were not there to draw back1 so we opened fire with the heavy artillery of ,god's power in the ,holy ,ghost4 ,we had not had1 as yet1 any public meetings1 but had been waiting on the ,lord for guidance4 ,one morning there appeared a woman in our doorway1 crying out 8,will ,you ,come and ,pray for ,my ,baby8 ,it ,is ,dying60 ,we went with her to her home1 which was a few doors away4 ,there on the bed lay a little child1 seemingly just passing away4 ,a crowd had gathered about the door4 ,when ,i saw the baby and that crowd there arose a cry to ,god from the depths of my soul to heal the child1 thereby proving ,his power to the people4 ,the child seemed to pass away1 but we called on ,god to heal it for ,his glory4 ,the little thing rose up1 climbed off the bed1 and began playing on the floor4 ,the mother shouted and gave herself to the ,lord then and there4 ,the doctors had given the child medicine to make it die easy1 for it had been sick a long time4 ,the mother brought the baby to our house1 and sang1 and praised the ,god of ,heaven until the people from far and near came to see the child4 ,she afterwards took the child and went all over the city from house to house telling how ,god had healed it and saved her4 ,then the people began to come to be prayed for4 ,often they would come and stay far into the night4 ,illustration3 ,mother with child that was raised up from death ,we were having such a blessed time that we forgot about living in the slums1 and about the saloons on either side of us1 although at first we could not sleep for the noise from them4 ,soon we discovered they had moved the saloon which was so close to our bedroom4 ,when ,i saw the proprietor come into the meetings1 with others who came for prayer1 ,i asked him if he had moved4 ,he answered he had1 as he did not feel good to have a bar so close to where we prayed so much4 ,besides1 he said1 he had no customers left1 as they all came to hear us4 ,hallelujah6 ,jesus did move in a mighty way4 ,on the other side was the biggest house of ill-fame in the city4 ,men and women gathered there by dozens1 some of them perfectly nude1 dancing and drinking at all hours of the night4 ,it was so awful we felt that hell had been uncapped in that place4 ,but here came the 8madame0 to us1 asking for prayer1 saying she was sick1 and she knew she was living a bad life4 ,after her came many others4 ,we prayed with each one and gave them each a ,bible1 until there were some mighty changes wrought in that section of the city4 ,one ,dark ,night when the rain was falling in torrents1 we were sitting around our feeble candle-light1 reading our ,bibles4 ,we heard a knock on the door4 ,it was late1 and we had been warned by both missionaries and the ,christian natives1 to be very careful to whom we opened our doors after night1 as there were people who would as soon kill us as they would an animal1 so we did not open the door immediately4 ,the knocking continued1 and we heard a man's voice asking us in ,spanish to let him in4 ,my husband partly opened the door1 and in the small opening we saw a tall1 dark native4 ,he pushed into the room1 looking very much frightened4 ,when we asked what he wanted1 he asked if we were the missionaries4 ,we told him that we were1 and he told us that five years before he had found a ,bible1 and began reading it4 ,he had become convinced of the truth of the ,gospel and wished to talk with us4 ,we talked and prayed with him1 then asked him to come to the meetings4 ,he said his mother was very angry because he did not go to the church any more1 and he was afraid that if he were to come to our meetings the people would kill him4 ,that was why he had come on such a dark1 wet night to have a talk with the missionaries4 ,we were reminded of the ruler in ,israel who interviewed ,jesus in the night4 ,illustration3 ,waiting for the ,gospel ,he came to the house every night for two weeks4 ,when we opened our class in ,english he attended4 ,we always had a lesson from the ,bible1 and the scholars had to learn scripture verses4 ,one day this man came out boldly and said1 8,i am coming to the meetings40 ,by this time we had several of the leading citizens of the city attending our meetings4 ,this young man has since been called to preach the ,gospel to his people4 ,pray for him4 ,the following is a copy of a note he wrote us when we left ,leon4 8,i am returning your book4 ,i thank you so much for it4 ,it has been a great blessing to me4 ,please pray for me1 as ,i feel a call to preach the ,gospel4 ,send me ,bibles and tracts from your land for my people40 ,others came to the class1 being anxious to learn ,english4 ,the judge of the city1 doctors1 lawyers1 and many others heard the ,gospel preached4 ,to one young man who came to the class we gave a ,bible in ,english1 and one day he came to ask us some questions4 ,the priests had told the natives we were nice people but were teaching error1 for we taught people to read the ,bible and the ,bible was a very bad book1 and they must not read it4 ,but this precious boy was convicted of sin1 and was seeking ,god4 ,we asked him to pray the ,lord to forgive his sins1 and then to believe that ,god did it4 ,he asked for a prayer-book1 so he could pray4 ,we told him we never used prayer-books2 we simply asked ,god to forgive us and save us from our sins4 ,he was sweetly saved and went away to bring a cousin to the meetings4 ,this cousin was also saved4 ,these two were among our brightest pupils4 ,they could read and speak ,english quite well in a few months4 ,one morning1 very early1 before we were up1 there came a knock on our door and a little brown-faced ,indian girl appeared4 ,she was about thirteen years old1 and very pretty4 ,she asked us to take her as a servant4 ,she had nowhere to go1 and had been sleeping in the market4 ,as ,i looked at that dear little brown face and heard her story ,i looked up to my ,heavenly ,father and breathed a prayer that ,he would remember the thousands who1 like her1 had no home and were perishing4 ,we told her we would take her1 and ,i wish my readers might have seen that dear little face light up with joy because she would have a home with the missionaries4 ,she was a very bright girl1 and very quick to learn4 ,soon she could play the organ and sing the ,gospel hymns4 ,how she did love to go to the meetings and to read her ,bible6 ,carl's ,ball and ,bat ,carl had a ball and a bat which had been brought from the homeland1 and in the daytime he would go out into the small park near the house1 gather all the boys from the streets1 and play ball with them4 ,they had never seen a ball or a bat before1 and it was all very wonderful to them4 ,carl's face would become very red from the heat1 and the children thought it queer to see a red-faced boy with such white hair1 and such peculiar things as the ball and bat4 ,he would play with them until lunch-time1 then they would come home with him1 and he would get his ,bible1 read from it1 and tell them of ,jesus1 and numbers of them were brought to ,god in this way4 ,illustration3 ,carl1 with his boys ,many boys and girls came to us asking for a school and a home1 but ,i am sorry to say that we could not possibly take them in1 our house and means would not permit4 ,but we are asking ,god to stir up the people in the homeland to give till there shall be a home and school opened in this dark city of ,leon where these precious jewels may be gathered in and taught the ,bible1 and the way to ,god4 ,we were having precious meetings1 and one day a man came saying he had walked a long distance to find the missionaries1 to get them to come to his home and teach the ,gospel4 ,husband and ,i went with him1 going as far as possible on the little railroad1 then walking the rest of the way4 ,when we arrived we felt as if every drop of our blood were boiling1 we were so hot1 walking so far under the tropical sun4 ,we found the family gathered to hear the ,word of ,god1 and thought of ,peter going to the house of ,cornelius4 8,oh1 the love that drew salvation's plan6 ,oh1 the grace that brought it down to man6 ,oh1 the mighty gulf that ,god did span6 ,at ,calvary40 ,the ,lord touched these dear hearts with ,his love in a mighty way4 ,they wept1 and cried to ,him to save them4 ,even the little children were hungry to seek the ,lord4 ,far away from all ,christians1 in a dark land1 filled with idols1 where the powers of darkness fill the very air1 were those precious souls1 just waiting for someone to come and tell them of a ,savior's love4 ,there are many thousands just like them4 ,dear reader1 what will you do to get the gospel to them8 ,ask the ,lord to show you what ,he would have you do4 ,i shall never forget the scene when we started to leave these people4 ,they clung to us1 begging us not to leave them4 ,but there were our own dear children at ,leon1 in a foreign land1 far away from all loved ones1 and with no one to protect them1 and the shadows of night were beginning to fall4 ,we had to pull ourselves away from those pleading1 soul-hungry people1 and say good-bye4 ,we promised to come back when we could1 telling them we must go back to our little ones1 and the work in ,leon4 ,the father and mother had seven bright-faced boys1 and asked us if we would take them into our school1 and we told them we would if we could but we were not able for lack of means4 ,returning it seemed as if the slow train would never get to ,leon4 ,we were tired1 and our feet were blistered from the long walk in the terrible heat4 ,but as we looked to the ,lord to refresh our bodies and heal our sore feet1 the ,holy ,spirit came sweeping through our beings1 so refreshing us that we hardly knew we had gone through such an ordeal4 ,in a few days there came a call to another home far away in the mountains1 where the people were begging that the ,gospel be brought to them4 ,i took a native woman with me and we traveled on the train as far as we could go4 ,we purposed going to the home of some native ,christians who lived in that town1 and who had been in the meetings at ,leon1 where we thought to rest until the sun went down1 as the other trip had taught me not to walk far under the hot sun4 ,as we passed down the street ,i heard the people calling out in ,spanish1 8,hay una ,evangelista60 7,there is a missionary67 ,but ,i thought nothing of it1 knowing they were not accustomed to seeing foreigners walking through their streets4 ,arriving at the house of the ,christians ,i was told the people would not allow missionaries to come to that town4 ,some months before1 one of their young men had been converted4 ,when he came back and told it1 men1 women1 and children1 with the priests as leaders1 gathered1 and cut him to pieces in the street near the house where we then were4 ,the dear native ,christians were looking for the people to come at any moment and kill them4 ,they declared that we all would be killed that day4 ,i began praying to find out if ,i had missed the ,lord's will by coming there1 but the ,lord spoke to my heart1 saying all would be well and not to fear what the people might do4 ,so we gathered inside and prayed to ,god for protection1 and to convict the people of their awful crimes4 ,when we arose from prayer a large crowd was gathered outside1 watching us4 ,the house was made of small poles stuck in the ground1 with large cracks all around1 so we could easily see and be seen4 ,we planned to leave the house at sunset1 to walk out to the farm where we were going to preach the ,gospel4 ,i told the dear ones not to fear1 but to trust ,god4 ,however1 they were greatly frightened and said the mob would certainly kill me when ,i went out4 ,but ,i knew ,i had been sent there by the ,lord1 and all would be well4 ,i went out and spoke to the crowd1 and then started down the street1 leading to the country4 ,when ,i looked around only my woman was with me4 ,she told me the others had gone another way1 hoping to miss the crowd1 which ,i saw was following us4 ,i saw some women give a boy a machette1 and tell him to cut me with it4 ,he came running toward me1 talking in ,spanish as fast as he could1 and swearing at me4 ,i went right ahead4 ,he kept at my side1 swearing4 ,the mob followed us4 ,we walked on until we came to where the road left the town1 and turned into the country4 ,i felt the power of ,god coming upon me in a way ,i had never felt before4 ,the veins of my neck swelled1 and my body began to shake4 ,then ,i turned toward the mob and began speaking to them in tongues4 ,they turned and ran1 until not one was to be seen4 ,a little disappointed feeling came into my heart4 ,i said1 8,jesus1 ,i wanted to die a martyr for you here in this dark land1 but now the mob is gone40 ,the power still filled my being1 until ,i could do nothing but worship ,god4 ,the native ,christians came up4 ,they said they had seen the people run1 and heard them exclaim that fire fell from ,heaven and burned them1 until they could endure it no longer1 and they had to run4 ,i did not see the fire1 but felt it burning in my soul in a mighty way4 ,at ,the ,farm ,i preached and sang until midnight1 and still the people begged me to tell them more 8good news0 as they called it4 ,truly it was good news of great joy to those poor people who had so long been under the heavy yoke of the enemy4 ,there was a family of fifteen1 also several hired men1 besides about twelve travelers who had stopped for the night4 ,they had only one room4 ,when ,i told them ,i could not preach any more that night1 but must have some rest for my body1 and a place where ,i could lie down1 they all went into the room--family1 travelers1 hired men1 some thirty people in all4 ,they took two young calves and three small deer with them1 also several hens with their little chicks4 ,i decided not to sleep with all those people and animals in that room1 with no ventilation--as the adobe houses are built without any windows4 ,i told them to fix me a cot outside in the corridor4 ,they said wild animals came at night1 and ,i must not sleep outside4 ,but ,i decided ,i would almost prefer being eaten by wild animals to being smothered4 ,as ,i insisted1 they put a cot for me outside1 and ,i did not awaken to see whether any wild animals came4 ,if any came1 they did not molest me4 ,arising next morning ,i ate my breakfast off of banana leaves1 then gathered the family for prayer4 ,how the power of ,god did fall and fill every hungry heart6 ,after prayer ,i told them ,i must leave them1 and return home4 ,we gathered our blankets together1 and climbed into the ox cart which had been brought to carry us to the railroad station4 ,i was too tall for the cowhide covering1 which was intended to protect us from the sun1 so ,i sat in the back and let my feet hang down over the end1 and so rode to town4 ,we sang and talked all the way1 about the love of ,jesus4 ,several times we stopped at houses by the roadside and preached to the people1 giving them tracts and ,bibles4 ,a large crowd was at the station waiting for the train4 ,i went to the platform and spoke to the crowd4 ,they asked me to give them ,bibles and tracts4 ,some of them were members of the mob which the night before had been ready to kill us for coming into their town to preach the ,gospel4 ,we arrived at ,leon very tired and needing rest4 ,but there were so many to be ministered unto and the needs were so great that ,i went right into the meetings1 where ,god blessed my soul and rested my body4 ,illustration3 ,where ,i preached until midnight1 and the entire family was brought to the ,lord4 ,the ,lord ,rolled the ,sea ,away ,one day a young man who had been in the ,united ,states1 came to see us4 ,he spoke ,english well1 also had been in different churches and had some knowledge of the ,gospel4 ,he came many times to read and pray with us4 ,one day he asked if we would not go to the beach for a day's outing4 ,we felt we could not spare the time1 and it would be too much of a luxury for us4 ,but as he insisted on bringing his machine and taking us1 we consented to go and prepared a little lunch4 ,before going we asked if we might preach to the people on the road4 ,he consented1 so we went for the day1 taking ,bibles and tracts with us4 ,many were the precious souls to whom we spoke about the ,lord ,jesus1 giving them the little printed messengers4 ,our hearts were moved with compassion as we saw the extreme poverty of the poor people out in the country1 with no one to love or help them4 ,the roads were almost impassable and the heat was intense1 but at last we saw the white-caps dashing up against the shore1 and felt the cool breeze from the ocean4 ,we stopped some distance from the water and walked down to the beach4 ,many ,indians were there4 ,some could not speak ,spanish1 but had a sign language4 ,we spoke to all who could understand us1 and they told the rest about the ,gospel1 for although they spoke ,spanish1 they also understood the sign language4 ,there was a dressing place for bathers and a stand where refreshments were sold by the ,indians1 who could not speak ,spanish4 ,i sat down in the shade while the rest went bathing in the surf4 ,suddenly ,i was startled by the screams of my daughter1 ,alma4 ,she and the young man were quite a distance out in the breakers4 ,they were drowning1 and calling for help4 ,i saw them go under4 ,my husband was trying to reach them1 but the strong undercurrent took him down also4 ,i prayed and called on ,god to save them4 ,running to the ,indians1 ,i tried to tell them to run with a rope and save them4 ,i could not make them understand1 but suddenly began talking in tongues1 with signs1 which ,i afterwards learned was their language4 ,they told the young man that ,i had implored them to help save my daughter1 husband and himself4 ,they ran to help ,alma and the young man1 but they could not be seen4 ,i started in that direction calling on the ,lord to save them4 ,the sea rolled up in a great heap1 and there they were on the sand4 ,how it all happened ,i cannot tell4 ,but ,i know the ,lord rolled the sea away1 and they were saved4 ,they were filled with water and ,alma was sick4 ,but the ,lord soon delivered her4 ,the young man knew the ,lord had saved them from death4 ,he was an expert swimmer1 but could not swim in that strong undercurrent1 which had drawn them so far out before they realized the danger4 ,illustration3 ,where the entire family was brought to ,jesus1 and the mother's hand was healed of blood poisoning4 ,note the hand wrapped in a large piece of cloth4 ,how we did praise ,god for ,his wonderful deliverance6 ,it was a mighty miracle1 which convinced the ,indians that ,god had delivered1 for they saw the waters rolled up in a heap4 ,it made them believe4 ,the news of the wonderful miracle ,god had performed for the missionaries soon spread about the city4 ,it was published in the papers1 and many who had not come before1 came to see us and were convinced of the ,gospel4 ,many people came from all parts of the ,republic to hear the ,gospel1 and to ask for ,bibles4 ,the dear saints in the homeland sent us ,bibles1 ,testaments and tracts1 and the ,word of ,god went forth4 ,we cannot tell how many precious souls were reached by the bread cast on the waters1 but we shall know when we reach the beautiful land beyond1 and see their dear faces shining with heavenly glory4 ,we are told to sow beside all waters1 and are promised that 8he that goeth forth and weepeth1 bearing precious seed1 shall doubtless come again with rejoicing1 bringing his sheaves with him40 ,psalm #abf3f4 ,many were the nights and times we went forth weeping over the sheep that were out of the fold1 lost among the idols1 vice and sin of every kind4 ,it was almost more than we could bear when so many of the people came to us1 and we were unable to take them all in and help them4 ,we could only weep and cry to the ,lord to help us to reach them1 and to stir up the saints at home to give all they possibly could to aid in helping them4 ,for this purpose we are sending forth this book1 that funds may be raised to send ,bibles and tracts to these people4 ,it was at this time1 when many were pressing upon us for help and our means were so limited that ,god told us to return to the homeland and tell the church of the great need of sending more ,bibles1 tracts and missionaries to these destitute fields4 ,as we looked to the ,lord and told ,him we did not have the money to get back home1 ,he spoke and told us we were to pack up and go to the port1 and ,he would send the money for us there for our fare4 ,so we began making ready4 ,another missionary and his wife came by1 going home on furlough4 ,they were going via ,guatemala1 believing they could save quite a sum of money by going that way4 ,but the ,lord had told us to go via ,panama4 ,we packed our trunks and made ready4 ,but oh1 how we did hate to tell our dear people we were leaving them1 for we loved them so1 and they loved and clung to us4 ,we knew they would feel so badly to have us leave them4 ,illustration3 ,where ,carl attended native school to study ,spanish4 ,neither the teacher or any of the pupils could speak a word of ,english1 so he very soon acquired the ,spanish4 ,when we went to the meeting that night we told them the ,lord had led us to return to our homeland1 to put the great needs of their country before the people4 ,they cried1 both men and women1 and pressed upon us until we thought we could never get ready to start4 ,i had to put our suit-cases in a room and lock the doors so ,i could finish packing1 for the house was full of precious souls begging to hear more of the ,gospel1 and telling us how much they loved us1 and what a great blessing we had been to them4 ,our hearts were breaking over the people1 for they were as sheep without a shepherd4 ,may ,god bless and keep them true to ,him4 ,we were packed and ready to go to the train when there came a big procession of people marching into the house4 ,some of them we had not met before1 and some we had seen on the streets and in the markets1 when we were preaching and giving out tracts4 ,many of them had come to our meetings1 had heard and accepted the ,gospel1 and had been filled with the blessed ,holy ,spirit4 ,they brought many presents1 among them a nice leather bill-book for my husband1 a manicuring set for ,alma1 pretty fans for me1 and boxes of candy for ,carl4 ,many useful presents they brought1 some of which had cost much money1 for everything is much more expensive there than in our country4 ,even rich people had come and brought presents to show their appreciation of our missionary work among them4 ,when the train pulled in1 and we were about to go on board1 several doctors and lawyers and the judge of the city came1 saying they were going to the port with us to stay until our ship sailed1 and there was the crowd standing outside waving their hands and saying1 8,good-bye1 don't forget to pray for us1 and send us ,bibles40 ,oh that scene6 ,we shall never forget it4 ,as the train started the people hung on to the side1 waving their hands1 and calling 8,good-bye1 our good missionaries2 we love you so much40 ,we had many opportunities to witness for ,jesus and to give out literature on the way to the port4 ,the people were so hungry they would run and beg for more tracts4 ,when we arrived at the port station we were taken to a hotel by one of the men who had gone with us1 and there a fine dinner was given us in a special dining room1 and we had a nice time4 ,we found we must appear before the ,american consul twice a day for several days before sailing1 as we had come from a yellow fever infected region4 ,we began to go that morning1 for the ship bound for ,panama would come in seven days4 ,we made ready to leave on that boat1 but there was no money for the fare4 ,as ,i prayed in my room one morning the ,lord said1 8,go and ask for your mail40 ,i thought1 8,i don't believe the mail is opened here1 but on arriving in the port is immediately sent to the different parts of the country40 ,but as ,i prayed again the ,lord spoke once more1 8,go and ask for your mail40 ,i knew it was the voice of the ,lord1 for ,he had wonderfully spoken to us and led us all the way1 so ,i went4 ,on asking for the mail ,i was told that no mail was coming for two weeks1 and when it did come it would not be opened there but would be sent out to the different parts of the republic4 ,illustration3 ,women coming from the market place ,i returned to my room1 wondering4 ,i believed the ,lord had sent me for our mail1 but why had the postal officials said it could not be obtained there8 ,besides1 there was no mail boat coming until after the other boat had sailed4 ,but as ,i prayed ,i heard the voice of the ,lord telling me to go again and ask for my mail4 ,i waited until the next morning1 then went again4 ,once more the postmaster told me the same thing1 that it would be impossible for me to get my mail there when it did come4 ,i must admit that ,i felt at a loss to know what to do1 or what it all meant4 ,but ,i couldn't doubt the voice of the ,lord4 ,i waited another day1 and prayed until ,i was sure the ,lord was speaking to me4 ,though ,i couldn't see how it all could work out1 yet ,i knew that ,he knew1 and had spoken4 ,i went again to the postmaster and explained to him that we were sailing on the ship which was then in the harbor1 and which was to leave in three days1 but again he told me the same thing2 there would be no mail boat in for two weeks1 and it would be impossible to receive my mail before that time4 ,i returned to my room and1 falling upon my face1 ,i cried to the ,lord for help1 for this seemed more than ,i could bear1 for the enemy was taunting me1 saying that the ,lord was not speaking to me1 that we had been deceived1 that the ,lord had not even told us to come to the port1 and that our fare would certainly not be provided4 ,nevertheless1 the voice of the ,lord came again to me1 saying1 8,ask for your mail tomorrow morning40 ,when we arose the next morning we saw another ship at anchor in the port4 ,it had come in during the night4 ,my husband strolled down to the dock1 and was informed that this was the mail boat from ,panama1 also that our ship was not to sail until the following day1 because the cargo was not yet unloaded4 ,when he returned with the welcome news ,i began to pray again about the mail1 feeling certain there was something for us on that ship4 ,then ,i went again to see the postmaster1 this time taking a ,testament to give him4 ,this seemed the wrong thing to do1 for he was a fanatical church man1 and the ,gospel was not allowed to be preached in that port4 ,but we had gone unmolested all over the place1 distributing tracts1 and preaching to the people1 and the dear natives had begged for ,bibles and the little papers 7tracts74 ,illustration3 ,alma with her music class in ,leon ,walking up to the office window1 ,i told the man the ,lord had spoken to me1 telling me there was mail there for me1 which had come in on that ship4 ,he came to the window1 began talking about the ,lord1 and asked me how ,i knew the ,lord had said there was mail there for us4 ,i answered that we had come to port in order to sail on the ship then in harbor1 that we did not have our fare1 but the ,lord had told us the fare would be provided after we reached the port4 ,i was sure there was mail for us there1 and would he please give it to me8 ,handing him the ,testament1 ,i told him to read it1 and learn about the wonderful ,savior who could come into our hearts and talk to us1 and lead us in such straight paths4 ,he began to weep1 and told me he had never before seen a ,bible1 had hated and persecuted the missionaries1 had hated me when ,i came inquiring for mail1 and had not even believed in ,god before2 but my coming so many times1 saying the ,lord had told me there was mail coming for me1 in spite of my knowing that the mail ship was not due for two weeks1 then the arrival of the mail ship before time1 and the postponed sailing of the other vessel upon which ,i said we were to sail1 had convinced him that ,god was actually speaking to me1 and he promised to try to get our mail4 ,however1 there were thousands of letters1 and he was rather doubtful if he could find our mail in the midst of so much other1 but promised that if ,i would return in the afternoon he would do his best for me4 ,in the afternoon1 ,i returned for the mail1 which ,i was sure would be there4 ,the man came hurrying to me1 and handed me two registered letters1 saying they were on the top of the pile of mail in the first bag he opened4 ,surely ,god had spoken to me1 he said1 and he knew now there was a ,god1 and he was going to serve ,him1 so as to have ,him speak to him1 too4 ,and very earnestly he promised to read the ,testament1 also he asked for a ,bible for his wife1 and tracts for his friends4 ,when ,i opened the two letters there1 lacking twenty-five dollars1 was the amount for our fare4 ,we sailed the following morning4 ,later ,i went into my stateroom to find out the exact amount of money we had1 to make sure how much was lacking for the entire trip to the homeland4 ,sure enough1 there was exactly twenty-five dollars lacking4 ,again ,i looked to the dear ,lord for help to believe for the needed amount1 and again ,he spoke1 telling me to open my ,bible4 ,i did so1 and my eyes fell upon this scripture3 8,and the ,lord1 ,he it is that doth go before thee2 ,he will be with thee2 ,he will not fail thee1 neither forsake thee2 fear not1 neither be dismayed40--,deut4 #ca3h ,looking at the little scripture calendar hanging on the wall ,i saw in the space for the day on which we would land in ,panama the identical verse ,i had just read4 ,strengthened and encouraged by this1 ,i felt that ,jesus would make it all right1 and that we were simply to trust and obey4 ,upon arriving in ,panama we were taken to the ,american ,bible ,house1 where we were treated with the greatest kindness4 ,dear ,mr4 ,duffey and his wife gave us much valuable information about the whole of ,central ,america1 as they were in touch with every mission station1 and had themselves been missionaries there for many years4 ,we had to wait three days for the ship to ,new ,orleans1 and we sweetly rested in the ,lord and trusted ,him to supply that twenty-five dollars4 ,one day we met a young ,mexican on the street1 whom we had known in ,nicaragua4 ,he was a traveling salesman from ,st4 ,louis1 ,mo4 ,we had given him a ,bible and talked to him about giving his heart to the ,lord1 and he had been very much interested in our work in ,nicaragua4 ,we invited him to visit us at the ,bible ,house1 and in the evening he came4 ,we read the ,word of ,god and had prayer1 and he told us of his having persecuted the missionaries in ,mexico4 ,he had never seen a ,bible before he met us1 but in the ,united ,states he had learned that missionaries did a good work among the people1 so he no longer hated them4 ,he said he was glad to have met us and heard us preach the ,gospel4 8,in return for this ,bible which you have given me10 he said1 8and the way in which you have talked to me1 ,i feel ,i should do something for you1 and the ,lord10 and he passed twenty-five dollars across the table to me4 ,praise the ,lord6 there was the rest of our fare home4 ,surely ,god does temper the wind to the shorn lamb1 and take care of ,his little ones1 leading them in and out where they can find pasture4 ,we sailed the next day4 ,many were the precious souls reached by us with the ,gospel while we were in ,panama2 also on land and on sea after we left there4 ,shall we not praise ,god forever for all ,his goodness to us1 and for the privilege of being called to preach to the nations of the earth8 ,put ye in the sickle1 for the harvest truly is ripe2 ,put ye in the sickle1 and reap with all your might2 ,put ye in the sickle1 for the ,lord calleth thee2 ,put ye in the sickle1 and to ,him1 ever faithful be2 ,put ye in the sickle1 ye worker of the living ,god2 ,put ye in the sickle1 in every land ye tread2 ,put ye in the sickle1 for the day is surely nigh2 ,put ye in the sickle1 for ,jesus ,juan4 ,after placing our things in the stateroom we went on deck and sat down4 ,a little ,south ,american woman came over to me and asked1 8,are you a missionary80 ,i told her ,i was4 8,well10 she said1 8,i thought you must be a missionary1 for no one else would be away down here so far away from their homeland40 ,she had been in the ,states studying to be a nurse1 and had been saved through a ,salvation ,army meeting on the street4 ,she took my arm and said1 8,come right over here4 ,there is a poor blind man from ,salvador1 and he badly needs help40 ,we thanked ,god1 for here was another chance to cast our bread upon the waters1 another hungry soul reaching out for the truth4 ,we took some tracts and ,testaments and went over to the man4 ,he said he had heard a traveling missionary preach the ,gospel several years ago in his own country1 and had longed to know more about it2 now here we were to tell him4 ,so he praised the ,lord1 and we wept and told him ,jesus loves us so much that ,he never fails to answer the prayer of an honest soul4 ,we gave him a ,testament and some tracts on ,salvation and ,divine ,healing and the dear little woman read them to him4 ,day after day he asked for more to be read to him4 ,the woman asked if we could not give her some to take home to ,ecuador to her people4 ,there was only one man on the ship who did not take tracts and read them and ask for more4 ,this man said he had not read the ,bible since he was a child4 ,now he was too old4 ,as we looked at him and saw the hardness in his face1 a great pity came into our hearts1 and we asked the ,lord to have mercy on him and save him4 ,we arrived in one port in ,costa ,rica on ,september #aeth1 ,spain's ,independence ,day4 ,the whole country was celebrating4 ,our ship would have to wait here several days1 perhaps a week1 the captain said1 because all the people got drunk on that day1 and it would take several days for them to sober up4 ,we arrived at six in the morning4 ,the noise from the cannon and other things was terrible4 ,we knew about how much time we had to make connections in ,panama1 and that we could not stay in this port over one day without missing connections4 ,so we prayed that ,god would make these people unload the ship that day so that we might go on4 ,at twelve1 when we were having lunch1 our ship was moving out to sea4 ,the men had come with their lighters and unloaded several tons of the cargo1 and we were on our way4 ,the dear old man who would not read the tract1 ate at our table4 ,he said he had lived there and in ,panama for fifty years1 and that was the first time he ever knew them to do such a thing4 ,he knew it was because we prayed4 ,so ,god was good not to leave him without a witness4 ,a man and his wife were going to ,south ,america4 ,they took tracts and ,testaments along which we gave them1 and said they were glad to have the light on the ,second ,coming of the ,lord1 and on ,divine ,healing4 ,there were people on board who were going to ,japan1 ,china1 ,india1 ,england and the ,united ,states4 ,all took with them the ,word of ,god which we had cast upon the waters4 ,two young men on their way to school in ,new ,york1 took along ,testaments to read4 ,they said they no longer believed in the ,church of ,rome1 and wanted to read the ,bible4 ,another boy on his way to ,south ,america came to talk with us about the ,bible4 ,he said he wanted to read the ,bible but had never had the opportunity4 ,so he sat on deck and read it4 ,how he did rejoice to know the truth6 ,he told us how he had gone to the different temples of the idols and saints seeking peace1 but had come away from them all without receiving any help4 ,but now he knew the truth1 and wanted to carry the good news to his people who were still in the darkness4 ,he said1 8,why don't more missionaries come and tell us the truth8 ,won't you go back to your homeland and tell them of our needs and the darkness we are in80 ,stewardesses1 waitresses1 captains and officers all heard the story of the ,gospel1 through the bread we cast upon the waters4 ,one officer said he was glad that someone thought of the men at sea4 ,they were always going and had no time to attend church and hear the ,gospel4 ,he had had ,christian parents1 but they were dead4 ,his heart was touched and with tears running down his cheeks he said1 8,may ,god bless you for giving me this ,testament4 ,i shall read it1 and pray every day1 as ,i want to meet my dear mother in ,heaven40 ,he had been at sea twelve years1 and that was the first time anyone had said a word to him about salvation4 ,the doctor on the ship was so interested he would leave his office for hours and come and talk with us4 ,he had been on that line many years and he had been shocked to see the condition in the ,latin-,american countries1 and the church at home seemed to be doing nothing4 ,he took tracts and papers and talked with us about prophecy4 ,he said he knew the ,lord was coming soon4 ,we invited him to meetings with us at ,colon4 ,he came to the ,bible ,house and to the meetings and said he was going to a ,pentecostal meeting when he returned to the ,states4 ,while in ,panama we visited the ,sea ,wall ,m4 ,e4 ,church1 where there is a work among the natives4 ,but all who come to the school have to pay4 ,that leaves the poor population wholly untouched by the ,gospel4 ,we looked over the field and found it a great white harvest field1 where laborers are badly needed4 ,in all these parts the people are hungry for the ,gospel4 ,illustration3 ,alma reading a ,bible story to her girls ,there is a little union church in ,colon in which a few people are praying for a revival4 ,it is a wonderful opportunity for a band of workers to go and hold evangelistic meetings4 ,there are many ,english-speaking people in these parts1 but ,pentecost has not been preached4 ,we believe ,god will raise up workers and send them to this place4 ,besides the people who live here1 there are hundreds of ships coming and going to all parts of the world4 ,many souls could be reached4 ,as ,i stood on the beach one day1 ,and saw the breakers roll in from the way1 ,the great waters piled up high-- ,i cried1 8,o1 ,god6 open the flood gates of mercy ,send rivers of ,thy ,spirit1 don't pass this people by40 ,,sailing ,,from ,,panama ,finding a ship that was to sail for ,new ,orleans we went aboard and set forth1 carrying with us many more tracts and ,testaments so that we might cast bread upon the waters among other people4 ,soon after leaving the port ,i noticed a man on board whom we had met in another place4 ,he was a gambler1 who traveled and gambled on ships all the time4 ,we had spoken to him of the ,bible and about the ,lord1 but he had said he did not think anyone ought to talk about the ,bible and religion1 as such talk would make people lose their minds4 ,we were only getting people stirred up1 and that wasn't good4 ,i heard him tell the captain we were missionaries1 and that wherever we went we talked about ,god and the ,bible1 but he hoped we would not be allowed to do so on this trip4 ,illustration3 ,an ,indian woman who came to the meeting and was saved4 ,some of the people looked so very aristocratic that the enemy said to me1 8,you had better not give out tracts and ,testaments on this boat1 as the people will not listen1 for they will think you are a fanatic40 ,but ,i felt ,i must let my light shine here as well as in other places4 ,so ,i went to my stateroom to pray4 ,i opened my ,bible to read and saw in it a little tract1 containing these words3 8,have you overcome the worldly opinions of the sect which is everywhere spoken against by taking your stand with it8 ,what would ,jesus have you do8 ,have you done that8 ,if the world has nothing to say against you1 ,jesus will have nothing to say for you4 ,his grace is sufficient4 ,ask ,him40 ,that was a message to my heart4 ,i said1 8,lord1 ,i will go through this ship and give out tracts to everyone4 ,now1 ,lord1 you bless every dear heart1 and open to them the ,gospel40 ,as ,i passed around the deck giving out tracts1 a man and his wife asked what church ,i belonged to4 ,i told them ,i belonged to 8,the ,church of the ,first ,born40 ,then ,i told them about the ,pentecostal people1 and how we had received the ,baptism of the ,holy ,spirit1 as the people did on the day of ,pentecost1 and told them that ,god was pouring out ,his ,spirit on the earth1 and that ,jesus was coming again soon4 ,they were ,seventh-,day ,adventist missionaries from ,colombia1 ,south ,america1 coming home on furlough4 ,they had been on the field four years1 but had only been selling their literature4 ,nobody had been saved1 but they thought that when1 they went back again they would be able to do something1 as the people would have an understanding of their religion and the keeping of the ,sabbath ,day4 ,we could see their lives were empty1 and that they knew nothing about worshiping ,god in ,spirit and in truth4 ,we had many talks together about the law of ,moses and the ten commandments4 ,we showed them we are dead to the law through the body of ,christ1 and that we should serve in newness of ,spirit and not in the oldness of the letter4 ,oh1 how these dear hearts did respond to the ,word of ,god6 ,they had been reading the many different books of their denomination1 but did not have a ,bible4 ,we asked them to read the ,word of ,god that would bring ,spirit and ,life into their lives and we gave them a nice ,bible4 ,as we separated in ,new ,orleans1 they took my hand and said1 8,thank ,god for sending you on this ship4 ,we felt empty and dry1 and now we know what is the trouble4 ,we shall read and pray until we are filled with the blessed ,holy ,spirit1 and when we return to our mission-field we can preach the ,gospel to the people40 ,a family coming from ,south ,america took tracts and ,testaments and called for more4 ,they said they were ,lutherans1 had been raised in that church1 felt a lack in their lives1 and wanted to have the power and glory of ,god in their souls4 ,they believed that ,jesus was coming soon4 ,every time we went into the parlor and sat down we had a congregation1 for the poor people were so hungry they would come and ask us to tell them more about this wonderful way4 ,a great hurricane was sweeping the ,gulf4 ,a wireless message had been received that the storm was terrible1 and warning us to prepare for it before leaving the port4 ,the blackness was awful on the waters as we went out4 ,as we moved slowly out of the inner harbor1 some battleships were having target practice at sea4 ,two submarines partly submerged1 were slowly moving along to keep ships from coming too close to where the sailors were shooting4 ,the ,lord said to me1 8,just as those submarines are placed here to protect the ships from the shooting1 so ,i will place ,my angels around this ship and the storm shall not molest you40 8,only believe and rest in ,me40 ,the passengers were frightened1 and the captain gave orders to have the storm doors and windows put in1 and the ship made ready to meet the terrible hurricane4 ,but on we sailed1 and the storm moved on in front of us1 all the way to ,new ,orleans4 ,only once did we get into it a little for a few minutes4 ,the rain came down in floods1 the wind blew with great force1 thick darkness settled down over the ship1 and we were tossed by the great waves that arose4 ,many became sea-sick and ran to their staterooms for life-preservers4 ,the captain gave orders to have the life boats in readiness4 ,as we passed into our staterooms1 not to get the little cork-and-canvas life preservers that were lying there1 but to get in touch with the ,one ,great ,life-,preserver1 who said ,he would give ,his angels charge over us1 there came into our hearts a sweet rest and peace4 ,after prayer we arose and went on deck4 ,as ,i passed through the door ,i met the captain1 who said1 8,i have been looking for you and your husband1 that you might pray for our ship to be saved1 as there is no other hope40 ,he himself lifted up his hand and asked ,god to drive back the storm4 ,just then the blackness swept off the decks1 the ship straightened up1 and the sun smiled down upon us4 ,surely ,god giveth ,his angels charge over us1 that we should not dash our feet against a stone4 8,hiding in ,thee1 hiding in ,thee1 ,thou blest ,rock of ,ages1 ,i'm hiding in ,thee40 ,from that time on we were sailing just behind the big black hurricane4 ,a ship that had been following us was caught in the storm1 and for three days and nights they were lost and had no hope of being saved4 ,a young man from this ship rode on the train with us from ,new ,orleans to ,st4 ,louis4 ,he told us of the terrible things they suffered4 ,how they all had life-preservers on many times1 and were ready to get into the life-boats1 as they thought the ship would go down4 ,on our ship every passenger1 officer and member of the crew took tracts and ,testaments and read them4 ,the captain told us he was glad to have someone on the ship who knew how to pray4 ,on the previous trip he brought some women from ,colon who were dope fiends4 ,the whole boat was in a terrible uproar all the way1 and he feared ,god would let them all go down for such wickedness4 ,he himself knew something of the power of ,god4 ,he took a ,bible and tracts and asked for some of our books for the ship's library4 ,shall we not give these men some good books to read at sea8 ,the gambler1 whom ,i heard say we were always talking about the ,lord1 came to me and said1 8,i want to get some papers and a ,bible4 ,i have always been a wicked man1 but since ,i have been on this boat ,heaven1 for he knew she was there4 ,one of the professors from the ,northwestern ,university was on board4 ,he had been traveling through all the ,latin-,american countries1 gathering information for the new history he was writing4 ,he came to talk with us1 saying he was interested in mission work4 ,we gave him all the information we could about the different parts of the country we had visited4 ,he said1 8,i know you people have something ,i haven't4 ,what is it80 ,he was a member of the ,presbyterian church1 and had been since he was a very young child4 ,his father was a minister1 so he had always been brought up in the church4 ,as we read the ,bible to him and prayed with him1 telling him of the great outpouring of the ,spirit of ,god in these last days1 and the soon coming of ,jesus1 he wept like a child1 and said he was ready for all ,god had for him4 ,when he returned to ,chicago he would go to a ,pentecostal mission1 as he knew this was the truth of ,god4 ,he was a very sweet spirited man1 open to the ,spirit of the ,lord4 ,he took with him many tracts on the ,baptism of the ,spirit and the ,second ,coming of ,jesus4 ,a young man1 on his way to school in the ,states1 asked for a ,bible1 saying he had never seen one1 but had a great desire to read one4 ,since hearing us talk so much about it1 he thought it must be a wonderful ,book4 ,he took a ,bible to school with him1 also tracts and papers4 ,he was a native of ,costa ,rica4 ,as we were leaving the ship at ,new ,orleans people came for more ,testaments and tracts to carry away with them4 ,one brother and sister1 very wealthy people1 traveling for pleasure1 took many of the little messengers1 the sister saying that when she reached her home in ,oklahoma she was going to prepare herself for missionary work4 ,she was tired of the life she had been living1 and having seen the awful need of the ,central ,american people1 she could never be happy again until she went to help them4 ,in ,new ,orleans we gave out hundreds of tracts and found many hungry souls4 ,i visited some of the missions there1 in search of ,pentecostal people1 but they told us there were none there4 ,such a needy city6 ,may the ,god of ,heaven stir our hearts until we are awakened and go forth into every city of the ,union with this message of the hour1 and the people are reached and the ,holy ,spirit is poured out upon the which we freely cast forth4 ,we traveled from ,granite ,city1 ,illinois1 to ,los ,angeles1 ,california1 giving out tracts and ,testaments4 ,from ,los ,angeles we sailed to ,central ,america and gave out the ,word in every port we came to in ,mexico1 ,central ,america and ,panama4 ,from ,panama to ,new ,orleans and ,granite ,city we distributed the ,word to thousands4 ,we look back over our journey and see a long white line of ,bread that was cast upon the waters1 reaching our home in ,granite ,city1 where also ,god is working4 8,on the resurrection morning1 when we rise to meet our ,lord1 ,when ,his glory and ,his victory we shall share1 ,with un-numbered blood-washed millions we'll go shouting through the skies1 ,and ,his bride ascends to meet ,him in the air4 8,when the roll is called up yonder1 ,we'll be filled with joy and wonder1 ,when we see the blood-washed number2 ,some from every tribe and nation will be there40 ,,the ,,needs ,,of ,,central ,,america ,there is a tall trees of the forests4 ,scantily-clad brown-faced boys and girls run about4 ,seeing it1 one is made to say1 8,what a beautiful country60 ,but1 ah6 ,as one advances inland1 leaving the pretty harbor of ,corinto1 on the ,pacific coast1 the signs of the enemy's work are on man and beast4 ,there is desolation everywhere4 ,the poor people are too weak to withstand the strong rival with whom they have had to battle so long4 ,homes are broken up4 ,mothers with their little children are crying for help4 ,their cries are heard on every side4 ,powers of darkness sweep over the whole country4 ,the poor are driven like animals to the plantations to work for a few cents a day1 not enough to sustain life4 ,they are paid in advance for the season's work4 ,the wage is so small the family soon ,south ,america1 as well as the ,west ,indies1 have been under the heavy yoke of ,romanism4 ,the ,spaniards came into the country and1 driving the natives at the point of the sword1 baptized them into the ,roman ,church1 and took away their language and liberty4 ,they compelled them to carry timber and stone from inland and build temples for the ,roman ,church4 ,illustration3 ,i am just a brown-faced ,indian girl1 but ,i want to learn to read ,god's ,word4 ,will you send missionaries to teach us8 ,there are thousands just as ,i am4 ,in ,leon1 which is the largest city of the ,republic of ,nicaragua1 and where we have our work1 there are between seventy and eighty thousand people and forty-two temples4 ,and when one sees those old temples almost ready to tumble down1 and covered with moss and grass centuries old1 one feels that ,rome is certainly coming to the end of herself in these countries4 ,the people are rising up now and calling for schools1 and for freedom of the press1 and are crying1 8,away with the ,church6 ,it has never done anything for us40 ,many thousands are becoming free-thinkers4 ,nicaragua is the only ,republic of ,central ,america that has ,church and ,state united4 ,a great fight is now on for their separation4 ,there are over one million people in this ,republic alone without the ,gospel4 ,let us pray ,god to speed the day when these reforms shall be wrought and the ,gospel be given the people4 ,nicaragua saw her first missionary sixteen years ago4 ,it has been the last of the ,republics to receive the ,gospel4 ,the persecutions were so severe that the missionaries had to leave in a few weeks4 ,but1 thank ,god6 some of the people accepted the glad news and have stood true through flood and flame4 ,but there are very few missionaries there as yet1 and thousands are without the knowledge of a ,savior who died for them4 ,all these countries are being flooded with ,new ,thought1 ,russellism1 ,christian ,science1 ,theosophy1 and ,spiritualism4 ,many are coming into these things now1 for the people are fast turning from ,romanism4 ,they are like little hungry birds with wide-open mouths ready to accept any poisonous thing presented4 ,are we1 the true followers of ,jesus ,christ1 going to sleep on and fail to wake up to this great opportunity8 ,let us go forth with the old-time ,gospel of ,pentecostal power1 that will drive the enemy from the land1 and give these dear people the truth4 ,at one place where we were having meetings the people asked us why missionaries had not come to them before4 ,they said1 8,we saw the first one sixteen years ago1 but he was so persecuted he had to leave us in a few weeks1 and only a few heard the ,gospel1 and we have been in darkness for so long4 ,oh1 if some one had only told us before the way of life60 ,many children were brought to us to be placed in school1 so that they might learn to read and write1 and study the ,bible4 ,but as yet we have been unable to open a school4 ,my heart has been torn as ,i have seen the little children growing up in such ignorance1 and especially the young girls4 ,this country1 like all other countries without the ,gospel1 regards the women and girls as no more than animals1 and they are the prey to every horrible crime that anyone wishes to inflict upon them4 ,the little girls are often sold into lives of shame by their parents for a few dollars4 ,we knew one mother who sold her four young daughters4 ,one of them found that she was to be sold so she ran away and hid in the mountains1 but they hunted until they found her1 then they bound her and carried her away1 dripping with blood where she had been beaten with clubs and stoned with stones4 ,the man that took her was1 ,i am sorry to say1 an ,american4 8,it is only the precious ,blood of ,jesus that can change the human heart1 that is deceitful above all things1 and desperately wicked40 ,jer4 #ag3i4 ,many foreigners have come here for money1 and do not care much how they get it4 ,some have gold mines1 others have plantations1 many of them are ,americans4 ,they are making every sacrifice for the gold that perisheth4 ,shall not we1 then1 who have the treasure of ,heaven1 break the ,bread of ,life to these dear hungry souls ere they perish8 ,there came to us early one morning a bright-faced ,indian girl about thirteen years old4 ,her parents were dead1 her sisters were living lives of shame and they had driven the poor little one out from them4 ,she had been sleeping in the markets and parks and was crying in the street4 ,some one told her to come to us for we were missionaries and we would help her4 ,she said she would be our servant and do anything1 that she might have a place where she could be sheltered from the wicked men4 ,she is only one of the many thousands that are here in this dark land crying for some one to help them4 ,unless we take them in they will be destroyed by sin4 ,many are found dead1 having been killed to hide the crime of some wicked person4 ,it is in behalf of these suffering ones that this little message is sent on its way in the ,name of ,jesus4 ,we are having blessed meetings4 ,many are coming out to hear the good news4 ,some have already received the ,baptism of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,a native brother that has been saved has gone out to another place to preach1 and the power of ,god is falling4 ,several have received the ,holy ,spirit1 and others have been blessed in soul and healed in body4 ,soon after coming into the country ,god gave me a vision of the blessed ,latter ,rain falling all over ,central ,america4 ,so ,i ask you1 dear child of the ,lord1 to pray that the people in the homeland will be stirred up to come up to the help of the ,lord against the mighty4 ,many missionaries have gone to ,china1 ,india1 ,africa1 and the ,islands of the ,sea1 but few have come to this country4 ,let us awake and pray that the ,lord will send forth laborers1 and that the means will be provided for their support1 and that this very needy land shall hear the blessed ,gospel story4 ,there are a few faithful soldiers of the cross laboring here1 but the battle is hard and long4 ,some have fallen1 and their comrades have laid them away on the green hillside to await their reward at the coming of the ,one who said3 8,he that reapeth receiveth wages1 and gathered fruit unto life eternal40--,john #d3cf4 ,but there is a great door open1 and the enemy is flooding in with all sorts of implements of war4 ,there is urgent need of more soldiers and supplies4 ,just as ,uncle ,sam was able to send men and means for the great conflict in ,europe1 and so defeat the enemy1 so our ,captain1 who never lost a battle1 is able to send ,his soldiers1 to defeat the enemy and drive him from the ranks and to send great showers of blessing upon the dry and thirsty land4 ,illustration3 ,one ,indian who found ,jesus and loves his ,bible ,just as some returned from the ,european battle-front to call for help from their countrymen1 so we send out the cry to our brothers and sisters in ,christ to let them know the great needs here1 that they may join in a petition to the ,throne of ,grace for help4 ,the fight is on1 the battle sound is ringing out1 ,the cry to arms is heard afar and near1 ,the ,lord of hosts is marching on to victory1 ,the triumph of the right will soon appear4 ,the fight is on ,o1 ,christian soldier1 ,and face to face in stern array1 ,with armor gleaming and colors streaming1 ,the right and wrong engage today4 ,,the ,,indians ,,of ,,nicaragua 7,extract from ,article by ,brother ,schoenich7 ,from the time that ,gil ,gonzaloz de ,avile reached the peaceful shores of the ,chontales--,nicaragua--penetrating to the borders of the great lakes1 the ,indian has been made to suffer from the hands of the so-called enlightened races4 ,when the above gentleman set his feet on ,nicaraguan soil1 the land contained some #c1jjj1jjj peaceful and industrious ,indians4 ,in less than ten years #b1ejj1jjj of them had perished in battle1 were worked to death in the mines1 or had starved in the mountain fastnesses4 ,in #aebi the ,indians revolted1 and after six terrible battles1 the ,spaniards succeeded in defeating them2 the ,indian chiefs were thrown to bloodhounds1 who tore them to pieces4 ,the masses were subjected to heavy tributes and severe tasks1 and were driven like cattle by their cruel conquerors4 ,whoever resisted was ruthlessly tortured1 towns that rebelled were destroyed and the people put to the sword4 ,the ,indians were reduced to the most abject slavery1 their property was taken1 and they were branded like cattle with hot irons4 ,this cruel practice prevailed for years1 and the miserable remnant of ,indians who were still permitted to live1 moistened their native soil with their bloody sweat1 or dragged out a painful existence in the mines or gold placers4 ,coffee1 rubber1 sugar and cocoa were not then sought as today4 ,in #ahaj1 when the first movement toward freedom began to be realized1 an impartial observer unhesitatingly estimated the entire aboriginal population of the country at about #ij1jjj souls4 ,the real ,indian is fast going out of existence4 ,the ,ladinos1 a class of mixed ,spanish and ,indian1 soon may be all that is left of the ,indian4 ,a fear of the white man has been planted in the ,indian by these things4 ,this makes it hard for the missionary4 ,when one visits their villages1 the children and women run and hide1 and sometimes the men too4 ,only when one is well acquainted will they show friendliness4 ,to reach them1 a missionary must live among them1 show them love and kindness and prove by word and deed that they are their friends1 and desire to bring them to the true light of our ,savior ,jesus ,christ4 ,these poor ,indians are much oppressed4 ,a planter will make a contract with a man for himself and oftentimes his woman or wife 7they are seldom married7 and all his children1 to pick coffee1 etc41 giving him money on the contract for his living4 ,when the planter is ready this man and his family must appear and work1 gathering the crop1 receiving twelve to twenty cents per day4 ,if he does not appear1 soldiers are sent after him1 and he is brought at the point of the bayonet with his hands tied behind him and made to work until his debt is paid4 ,the contract may be made as far as twelve months ahead1 and likely the man has used up all that his contract calls for4 ,he then seeks work elsewhere1 or even contracts himself to another planter4 ,i know a man who has been trying for four or five years to get free from his 8patron10 as the planter is called4 ,because he is a good worker the planter will not release him unless he pays four or five times more than he owes4 ,the man is interested in the ,gospel4 ,we are praying ,god to liberate him and make him a true servant for our ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,may ,god help the ,church of ,christ to awake to see the awful condition of these people1 who are also compelled to pay their church dues by law and by force4 ,i know a woman who was back in her church dues4 ,they took all that she had1 which was a few chickens4 ,friend1 will you not take these dear people on your heart in prayer and intercession8 ,god can and does save poor ,indians4 ,we have seen ,his work in the lives of some4 ,brother1 ,sister1 awake6 ,our ,lord is at hand1 and what is done must be done quickly4 8,whatsoever ,he saith unto you1 do it40 ,there is also a remnant of ,indians in remote parts of the ,republic known as the ,suma and ,mosquito tribes4 ,these ,indians have not come under the influence of the ,church of ,rome4 ,they do not speak the ,spanish language4 ,there is more ,english than ,spanish spoken among them4 ,for more than half a century the ,moravian missionaries have worked among them4 ,they have several missions and churches scattered along the ,atlantic coast1 and up some of the large rivers4 ,the ,moravian ,mission has translated the ,new ,testament into the ,mosquito language4 8,,where ,,is ,,the ,,white ,,man',s ,,book ,,of ,,heaven80 ,in #ahca1 four ,indian chiefs from ,idaho made their way over the ,rockies and were found on the streets of ,st4 ,louis1 asking1 8,where is the white man's ,book of ,heaven80 ,general ,clark befriended them1 took them around the city1 where they were shown everything of interest1 and they were treated with the utmost kindness4 ,finally two of the chiefs fell ill and died1 and when the remaining ,indians were preparing to return to their own tribes1 the general gave a feast for them4 ,at the banquet1 in a farewell address to ,general ,clark and friends1 one of the two ,indians poured forth his burden of sorrow in words of pathetic eloquence1 as follows3 8,i came to you over the trail of many moons from the setting sun4 ,i came with an eye partly open for my people1 who sit in great darkness1 but ,i go back with both eyes closed4 ,how can ,i go back blind to my blind people8 ,i made my way to you with strong arms1 through many enemies1 and through strange lands1 that ,i might carry back to my people much knowledge1 for my people sent me to get the white man's ,book of ,heaven4 ,illustration3 ,an ,indian woman whose attention was attracted and picture taken without her knowledge4 ,indians are very superstitious and are afraid to have their pictures taken4 8,you took me to see many strange things1 and to places where you allow your women to dance1 as we do not ours1 but the ,book was not there1 and now we are going back the long trail to our people in the dark land4 ,you make my feet heavy with many gifts1 and my moccasins will grow old carrying them1 but the ,book is not among them4 ,what shall ,i do8 ,shall my people die in darkness8 ,when ,i go to them1 without the white man's ,book of ,heaven1 and tell them ,i could not get it1 they will rise up1 one by one1 and go out1 to return no more1 for it is for that ,book that they have been awaiting my return4 ,how can ,i return to my people without the ,book80 ,it is said that the city was searched for a ,bible in this man's language1 but there was none to be found1 and the ,indians went their way4 ,this incident was told in a ,methodist ,episcopal conference1 and an appeal was made for some to carry the ,gospel to the ,indians4 ,two young men just starting in the ministry were present1 and they arose and said they would go4 ,they married two lovely young women1 and loaded an ox-wagon with their belongings and with ,bibles translated into the language of the ,indians to whom they were going4 ,many weeks of strenuous travel passed before they reached their destination with the white man's ,book of ,heaven4 ,the first two white women to cross the ,rockies were these two young brides1 with their husbands4 ,they spent their lives preaching the ,gospel to the ,indians1 hundreds of whom were brought to ,jesus through this faithful ministry4 ,shall we not learn a great lesson from this story8 ,shall we not1 with all our modern conveniences and greater opportunities1 rise up and get the message to the great masses of humanity before ,jesus comes8 ,one time1 while preaching to a large crowd of natives in ,central ,america1 ,i told them of the great love of ,god1 and how ,he had saved us1 and put ,his great love in our hearts which was why we were there to preach to them and tell them of that love4 ,when ,i finished1 an old man arose4 ,he said he was eighty-four years old1 and this was the first time he had heard the ,gospel4 ,then he asked1 8,how long have you people of the ,united ,states known of this wonderful love of ,god80 ,i answered that we had always known of ,jesus1 that thousands knew of ,him1 and were serving ,him1 and that ,i had been saved about fifteen years4 ,the old man then asked why1 if we had known of this great ,savior so long1 we had not come sooner to tell his people about ,him1 for all his relatives had died1 and had never heard the ,gospel4 ,he continued1 8,if ,i had known this ,gospel and the wonderful love and power of ,god to save us from all sin1 and if you had known nothing of it1 ,i would have come to you40 ,when ,i began to make preparations to leave their village they held on to my dress and to my arms1 begging me not to leave them1 with no one to teach them about the ,bible1 and they would not let me go4 ,finally ,i had to pull myself from them and go for my train4 ,as far down the track as ,i could see1 those dear ones were waving and calling me to return to them4 ,even now ,i can see those beckoning hands and hear those voices calling1 although ,i am now far away in my homeland4 ,what8 ,shall they perish without knowing of ,god's great love and of ,his power and willingness to bless them and lift them up from the awful darkness of sin and idolatry which they are in8 ,i wish my readers might get a peep into the land where the true ,god is unknown1 and where there are no ,bibles to guide the people into the right path1 ,i am sure they would give1 and so help others1 who have been called1 to go4 ,do ,you ,know ,what ,i ,would ,do8 ,if you had been born in a distant land1 ,far over the deep wide sea2 ,if you had been born on a foreign strand1 ,and ,i1 in ,america free8 ,if you were ,i1 and ,i were you1 ,do you know what ,i would do8 ,if you had been born with a swarthy skin1 ,and people looked on you with scorn3 ,while ,i know nothing is black but sin1 ,and the soul may be white as the lily at morn2 ,if ,i had a chance to uplift you1 ,do you know what ,i would do8 ,if you were an orphan1 and homeless too1 ,and never had heard of the ,lord2 ,while ,i had been taught from earliest days ,to love and obey ,his ,word2 ,if you were poor1 and ignorant too1 ,do you know what ,i would do8 ,i would save my pennies and nickels and dimes1 ,and send them over the sea2 ,that you might be fed and clothed and taught1 ,to worship the ,god who is dear to me2 ,if you were ,i1 and ,i were you1 ,that is just what ,i would do4 ,i would tell all the boys and girls around ,just what ,i was working for1 too2 ,and ,i'd never give up till ,i got them to help ,to send you the ,gospel true2 ,if you were ,i1 and ,i were you1 ,that is just what ,i would do4
