was only a single dollar in the possession of the home missionary when the five dollars were returned1 and seventy-five cents of that were to be paid for a necessary bill in a day or two4 ,those five dollars were sent to our treasury4 ,the letter that brought the gift was full of thanksgiving that the sender was able to aid us4 ,even this does not tell the story of the noble spirit that lay behind it all2 for there came with the money the request that it should be credited to the ,congregational ,church6 ,this is only a single example4 ,we could refer to a great many such4 ,large and small1 the contributions have been sent1 from churches and individuals1 from rich and poor1 from young and old1 bearing the evidence of interest and sacrifice and work2 and the result is1 we have closed the year free from debt4 ,by this outcome we are again impressed with the strong hold that the ,american ,missionary ,association has upon the churches and the ,christian public4 ,they believe in it2 they love death4 8,he was not1 for ,god took him40 ,mr4 ,washburn's life was a most successful and honored one4 ,he graduated from ,yale ,college in #ahdd with the ,christian ministry in view1 but being called to straighten out some entanglements in a business firm that had become badly involved1 he revealed such business capacity that his continued services were deemed indispensable4 ,he settled in ,greenfield1 ,mass41 and built up a large business in the manufacture of wooden-ware4 ,he took an active interest in everything that pertained to the welfare and prosperity of the town in which he lived4 ,he became director of the leading bank in ,greenfield and afterwards its ,president4 ,he was a director of the ,connecticut ,valley ,railroad and several other local corporations4 ,early in the war he was elected ,united ,states ,representative1 being complimented with the entire vote of his district4 ,he was so popular no one was put in nomination against him4 ,five times he was sent to ,congress by successive relection4 ,massachusetts elected him its ,governor in #ahga by #bg1jjj majority over ,john ,quincy ,adams4 ,he resigned his seat in ,congress to be inaugurated ,governor in ,january1 #ahgb4 ,he was relected ,governor for two more terms and resigned his ,governorship to fill out the unexpired term in the ,u4,s4 ,senate caused by the death of ,charles ,sumner in ,march1 ,constitution3 ,why is it that so many of the respectable white people of this country claim blood affinity with the ,negro race by condescending to call them 8aunt0 and 8uncle08 ,an 8aunt0 is a father's or mother's sister1 an 8uncle0 is a father's or mother's brother4 ,now1 why should a ,negro be made to believe that he is a blood relation of white families by calling them 8aunt0 and 8uncle10 terms of the highest family respect8 ,is there any wonder that some ,negroes think they are as good as a white man1 when they are called by these endearing names8 ,the ,negro is an imitator of the white man1 and if we are to keep the races apart1 let no such example be set for the ,negro's imitation4 ,what absurdity this is1 and withal how insulting to the colored people4 ,not unlikely the person who wrote it was brought up by a colored nurse4 ,the genuine affection with which many of the ,southern white people speak of the old colored uncle and aunty is often very touching4 ,they belong1 however1 to the 8,old ,south40 ,the 8,new ,south0 is speaking another kind of language4 ,when ,mr4 ,grady in his speech at the ,new ,england ,society's dinner in ,new ,york informed his auditors that the ,new ,south recognized fully the ,negro's rights1 it must have been in grim sarcasm4 ,did he mean by the ,new ,south the white people of ,georgia8 ,that interpretation of his language would save the other ,southern ,states from the censure of his misrepresentation4 ,but ,georgia1 by the recent conduct of its ,legislature in the discussion and manipulation of the ,glenn bill1 contradicts nearly everything ,mr4 ,grady said in that speech on that subject4 ,the right to be legislated against1 to be branded with essential and eternal inferiority as a race1 to be insulted1 to be abused1 to be discriminated against at every point1--this is what the white people of ,georgia believe if the voice and conduct of their legislators mean anything4 ,we presume ,mr4 ,grady did not know this when he made that speech4 ,if he did know it1 he violated the hospitality that honored him as its guest4 ,but the colored people will have their rights4 ,the time is not yet1 but it is coming4 ,hostile legislation and violence cannot prevent it4 ,christian education will solve the problem4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,young ,,men ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,the friends of the ,south look to the young men for regeneration1 and yet the situation is complicated by a peculiarly unfortunate circumstance4 ,a ,southern boy that was six years old in #ahfj was allowed to run the streets1 boss the slaves1 and do anything but study4 ,it can be stated as a general proposition that the ,southern-born men in the prime of life in the ,south to-day--that is from #cj to #ce or #ch--;are uneducated4 ,a man with gentle blood in his veins and a patch of weeds in his head1 so to speak1 is no ornament to any community1 and the chances are that he will be a danger to it4 ,if one would understand the full application of this fact let him run over the lists of the ,southern ,legislatures and note the ages of the members that make the most trouble4 ,again1 the migration of young men is a cause of disquietude4 ,through the low country from the ,carolinas to ,louisiana1 where agriculture is at a low ebb in consequence mainly of the credit system1 the young men are continually becoming dissatisfied and leaving4 ,our ,northwest is full of these ambitious ,southern men4 ,certain ,southern ,states are for various reasons putting premiums unwittingly upon emigration4 ,kentucky has been almost swept as with a broom1 the better class of young men having been carried across the ,ohio ,river4 ,this is not the case with ,tennessee1 which is twenty-five years ahead of ,kentucky in civilization4 ,tennessee seems destined to become one of the most important educational centers of the ,south1 and it is in a fair way of holding its young men4 ,texas is another ,state which is holding its young men4 ,this is a matter that the law-makers of the ,south will do well to consider4 ,a commonwealth that cannot hold its young men cannot hold its own in the race for supremacy4--,springfield 7,mass47 ,republican4 ,a partial confirmation of the above views is furnished in the action of the ,georgia ,legislature respecting the co-education of the races4 ,mr4 ,glenn is a young man4 ,his wild followers are in the main young men4 ,just now these youth are in the saddle and they are not backward to show the world what kind of men they are4 ,in our opinion1 there have been greater and wiser statesmen4 ,it is something of an explanation1 however1 to know that in all probability they are men of no education4 ,the works of ignorance are very apt to be works of ,congregational ,church in ,savannah1 ,ga41 went with a friend a few weeks ago by railway to ,mc,intosh4 ,they paid for first-class tickets and went into the so-called 8white car40 ,the conductor merely intimated to them that they were in the wrong car4 ,this did not suit the white passengers1 who1 to the number of twenty-five1 insisted that they should leave4 ,they found the conductor and appealed to him4 ,to his credit be it said1 he came and informed the passengers that as conductor he was compelled to protect the colored men1 and hinted that they better not interfere with them4 ,this settled it4 ,the boys took their first-class seats in the white people's car and rode unmolested to their destination4 ,this is certainly a report of progress4 ,all that is needed is a little backbone on the part of railroad officials at the ,south1 and the colored people will have their rights in railway travel4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,kentucky ,conference of the ,african ,methodist ,episcopal ,church convened recently in ,louisville4 ,bishop ,miles having called the meeting to order1 before proceeding to business startled the ,conference by saying3 8,i have received complaints against a great many of you preachers who do not pay your debts4 ,you are liable to be arrested1 and ,i fear ,i shall have to call a private session to consider the matter4 ,if you don't receive enough money for preaching1 you had better quit and go to work at something where you can make more money4 ,you need not say a word4 ,i know you1 and ,i'll just give you until next ,friday to get square with your creditors4 ,i hope you'll do this1 because ,i don't want to expose you1 but if you don't come up and do right the public will know it1 and you will be left without an appointment40 ,it is certainly a sad condition of things when a ,bishop has thus to reprove ministers1 and so many of them4 ,it is no surprise to those who know the kind of men who are ministering to the colored people4 ,there is no greater need among the colored people than that of a morally and intellectually competent ministry2 but it is gratifying to know that there are such men in positions of influence first principles4 ,american patriotism must be a ,christian patriotism4 ,and while on this theme1 we can hardly help referring to the false patriotism prevailing in a portion of our country where the colored people are still so generally proscribed4 ,were they not the loyal ones in the civil war8 ,and yet they have few rights4 ,this is their native land1 yet they are denied suffrage4 ,they are manfully trying for an education1 but little encouragement do they get from those around them4 ,among the truest patriots to-day in our land are those teachers and preachers who have gone among this race to help elevate them1 but they are still1 as for these two decades past1 ostracised by the whites1 some of whom are altogether their inferiors1 and who1 if they themselves are to be elevated1 it must1 it would seem1 be accomplished largely through the elevation of these colored citizens1 by these same despised ,northern teachers6 ,no6 ,a true ,american patriotism must not ignore these six millions for whose condition the whole people are1 and have been1 responsible4 ,and if the ,government cannot be induced in some form to give federal aid towards educating those needy millions1 then surely the true patriot of to-day1 whether ,north or ,south1 will individually contribute to support such organizations as the ,american ,missionary ,association1 whose object it is to help the poor and oppressed now among us1 whether they be the freedmen1 the ,indians or the ,chinese4 ,,from ,a ,,sermon ,,by ,,rev4 ,e4 ,n4 ,,andrews1 ,,hartford1 ,,wis4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,forty-,,first ,,annual from centuries of bondage1 when he said to his son-in-law3 8,thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws1 and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk and the work they must do40--,ex4 xviii1 #bj4 ,these freed slaves1 under the leadership of ,moses1 needed instruction in reference to religious duties1 the conduct of their lives1 and the larger work that opened to them as free men4 ,this counsel of the old ,midian ,priest applies equally in its principles to the problem the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is helping to solve among the freed men of the ,south to-day4 ,this work must be fundamentally that of instruction4 ,no revival excitements1 no moral shocks1 will effect the cure of superstitious ignorance which the social1 political and religious forces of the past have united to make most dense4 ,slow and patient methods of instruction only can dispel this darkness4 ,this fact emphasizes the importance of the ,,educational ,,work in the ,south4 ,the total number of schools planted in the ,southern ,states is fifty-four4 ,six of these are chartered institutions1 fairly entitled to the rank of ,colleges4 ,sixteen are ,normal and ,training ,schools4 ,thirty-two are common schools1 scattered throughout nine different ,states4 ,in these schools are #bdf instructors and #h1faf pupils4 ,in analyzing these figures1 we find not a few encouraging facts4 ,one school has been added to the total number under the care of the ,association during the last year4 ,two new schools stand in the list of ,normal ,institutes4 ,normal work was begun by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 in #ahff2 now we have sixteen well furnished schools1 one great purpose of which is to instruct instructors4 ,large additions have been made to the accommodations of our schools during this year4 ,three school buildings1 and two buildings used for industrial training1 have been erected4 ,tougaloo rejoices in the completion of the two ,ballard buildings1 one used for class rooms and the other for industrial training4 ,these two buildings were erected by the students1 under the direction of the ,superintendent of ,mechanical ,training1 who was also the architect4 ,the saving in expense of building was not less than #c1jjj1 and the ,industrial classes were thus given the best instruction in this department4 ,the ,girls' ,industrial ,school at ,thomasville1 ,ga41 has just entered its new and commodious home4 ,this building accommodates forty boarding pupils1 and contains furnished rooms for teachers1 two offices1 dining-room1 reception room1 kitchen and laundry1 and all the appointments of a complete boarding school4 ,the ,academy at ,pleasant ,hill1 ,tenn41 a school established for the mountain people1 has just dedicated a new and commodious building1 to be used both for school and church purposes4 ,at ,williamsburg1 ,ky41 we have added an ,industrial ,department to the course of study1 and an unused factory has been purchased and fitted up for the accommodation of the classes4 ,these mountain boys who become skillful in the use of carpenter's tools in this school will scarcely be satisfied to occupy the poor log cabins in which their fathers and grandfathers have lived for generations4 ,missionary influences radiate from a carpenter's shop now as in our ,lord's day4 ,at ,grand ,view1 ,tenn41 the people themselves have rented an additional building for school purposes4 ,the enrollment had already outgrown the accommodations of the old quarters4 ,at ,straight ,university1 ,new ,orleans1 a neat ,industrial building has been erected4 ,in addition to these new buildings which have been put up this year1 the ,cassedy school building at ,talladega has been materially enlarged1 to meet the growing needs of this department4 ,at ,avery ,institute1 ,charleston1 ,s4,c41 the damage wrought by the earthquake has been repaired4 ,there was serious interruption of the school work here1 as the ,institute could not be opened for months1 and it was difficult even then to gather the usual number of pupils1 on account of financial losses and the intense excitement of the public mind incident to the earthquake4 ,the enrollment shows an attendance of ninety-two less than last year4 ,notwithstanding these extensive enlargements1 pupils have been turned away from several of our institutions because of lack in school accommodations and in teaching force4 ,in one school the ,principal tells us of a boy who applied for admission to the school4 ,he could not take him4 ,in a few days a leading business man of the city called to intercede in the boy's behalf1 but every corner of the school was full4 8,if there is a case of sickness or removal for any cause1 will you not promise to let that boy have the first chance80 pleaded his earnest friend4 ,but this boy was only one of many such boys and girls4 ,at another ,institution the ,principal reported at one time during the year that there were twenty-five families who were waiting for an opening in the school1 that they might send one or more pupils there4 ,in a school-room fitted to accommodate fifty-two pupils if every desk were full1 ,i counted ninety-six1 and the teacher reported shortly afterwards that one hundred and eight were present4 ,it goes without saying that it is impossible to do the best sort of school work under such circumstances as these1 and the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 seeks to do only the best work4 ,one of three things is evidently true in reference to the educational work of the ,association3 ,we must either sacrifice the character of the work1 or reduce the amount of work done1 or have more money4 ,which shall it be8 ,industrial training holds a still more important place than ever in the course of instruction in our schools4 ,the new ,industrial buildings at ,williamsburg1 ,tougaloo and ,straight are already occupied with interested classes4 ,there are now taught at ,tougaloo1 in industrial branches3 ,farming1 ,tinning1 ,blacksmithing1 ,wagon-making1 ,carpentering1 ,painting1 the use of ,steam ,power in ,sawing and otherwise4 ,the boy who completes a course of instruction in the wagon-making department can build1 iron1 paint and prepare for market1 wagons or carriages1 beginning with iron in the bar and timber in the rough4 ,the ,industrial training for girls shows similar advancement4 ,the work has been better systematized1 and regular grades in housekeeping and sewing have been established4 ,kitchen gardening1 which is the sthetic name for all sorts of unsthetic household work1 has been introduced into several of our schools4 ,in one instance the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 missionary has been invited to organize classes for ,industrial training in the white public schools of the city1 on account of her superior skill in teaching in this line4 ,the ,connecticut ,industrial ,school for ,girls1 already mentioned1 which began its existence under the baptism of a fiery persecution at ,quitman1 rejoices in the great enlargement of its facilities for industrial training4 ,unlike the prophet's experience1 we can say that 8the ,lord was in the fire40 ,let us turn a moment now to note the record of the year's work in our six chartered institutions4 ,,atlanta ,,university has wrought throughout the year1 under various embarrassments4 ,no one has yet been found to take up the large responsibilities of the ,presidency so successfully borne by the lamented ,president ,ware4 ,the schools of the prophets and the various fields of labor have been diligently scanned1 but no ,elisha has been found upon whom her ,elijah's mantle should fall4 ,the iniquitous ,glenn ,bill disturbed the quiet of the scholastic life of the ,university4 ,it is not necessary to refer at length to the barbarous propositions of this bill4 ,it failed to pass2 but the bitter agitation1 the obtrusive visits of politicians and the excited state of public feeling1 have been a terrible tax upon the strength of those who were already burdened with the regular work of the ,university4 ,notwithstanding these discouragements1 ,atlanta ,university has increased the enrollment of pupils from #bia of last year to #dac4 8,the wrath of men shall praise ,him10 is a truth that is always true4 ,,fisk ,,university has enjoyed a year of marked prosperity4 ,the character of the work done here is of a high order4 ,a scholarly ,french prelate of the ,romish ,church1 who had visited many institutions in this country1 recently found his way to ,fisk ,university4 ,he took in hand the classes in ,latin and ,greek1 and put them through an exacting and exhaustive examination4 ,he afterwards said to a friend that the work done in the class rooms at ,fisk ,university was as good as that of any ,american school which he had visited4 ,this is unsought testimony of high value4 ,fisk is constantly broadening and deepening her work4 ,here1 too1 the enrollment shows a decided increase over that of last year4 ,the names in the catalogue number #dcg1 as against #chd last year--a gain of #ec4 ,during the year there has been a quiet work of grace among the students1 both hopeful and helpful4 ,,talladega ,,college4--,among those who took the title of ,b4 ,d4 upon examinations at ,talladega's last commencement was a young clergyman who1 during several years of successful ministerial labor in a large church1 carried on systematic study and prepared himself for these examinations4 ,talladega ,college lays great emphasis upon thorough scholarship4 ,the course of study includes ,normal ,training1 ,college ,preparatory1 ,college and ,theological ,departments4 ,the ,intermediate and ,primary grades of the ,normal department have outgrown their accommodations1 and the building has been enlarged to accommodate them4 ,the industrial departments are an important feature of the school work at ,talladega4 ,the ,winsted farm offers fine advantages for agricultural training1 and the large ,slater shop furnishes the students with opportunity for thorough knowledge of mechanical industries4 ,the ,president writes3 8,talladega aims at thoroughness and seeks to cultivate the hand1 head and heart40 ,the enrollment in this college shows a slight increase over that of last year4 ,,straight ,,university1 at ,new ,orleans1 gathers among its students many from that bright and interesting people known as ,creoles1 who have so often furnished characters for song and story4 ,the ,romish influence is very strong at ,new ,orleans1 but during an interesting revival with which the school was blessed this year1 not a few children of these ,catholic homes professed ,christ4 ,one of these desired to join the ,university ,church4 ,her parents gladly consented1 saying that if their child could live a better ,christian life in that church than in their own1 they were rejoiced that she should take this step4 ,the religious interest in the school this year has been deep and genuine4 ,the regular course of training at ,straight includes ,normal instruction1 and teachers educated here are found in many ,southern cities4 ,at ,vicksburg1 ,miss41 the ,superintendent of the colored public schools1 having eleven teachers under his direction1 is a graduate of ,straight and is an honor to his ,alma ,mater4 ,the year just closed showed an enrollment of #eah pupils in this school4 ,industrial classes have been organized as a part of the regular school work4 ,in the ,law ,department at ,straight we have the remarkable phenomenon of white and colored students sitting down side by side in the same classes4 ,the whites come from the best ,southern families1 and are there because the instruction in the ,straight ,law ,department is so excellent4 ,a diploma from this department admits a student to the practice of law in the ,state1 without examination4 ,,tougaloo1 ,,miss41 is situated only eight miles from the capital of the ,state4 ,there has been added to the former course of study at ,tougaloo a department of ,biblical instruction during the year4 ,the purpose of this department is to fit the students for more efficient and intelligent ,christian work4 ,the industrial departments of ,tougaloo are especially complete and have been already mentioned4 ,the appropriation of #c1jjj from the ,state was almost the only one in the whole list of appropriations voted by the ,legislature for school purposes which was not reduced this year4 ,this fact is remarkable testimony to the value of the school by those who see its immediate results4 ,rev4 ,g4 ,s4 ,pope1 who has been connected with ,tougaloo as its ,president for many years1 has been transferred to the general missionary work in the ,tennessee mountains4 ,his services as ,president of ,tougaloo have been characterized by great energy and faithfulness4 ,,tillotson ,,institute1 at ,austin1 ,texas1 is the only important school we have in that great empire of the ,southwest4 ,this is the youngest child among the chartered institutions of the ,association1 but even this child is crying out for enlarged accommodations4 ,the enrollment of the school shows a considerable increase over that of last year1 and the promise for the year now opening is still larger4 ,one building only answers all the purposes of this institution4 ,here are the school rooms1 the teachers rooms1 the ,president's residence and office1 dormitories1 rooms for industrial training of girls1 library1 chapel1 dining room1 kitchen and laundry1 and it is not a large building either4 ,are not these facts potent arguments for a new building8 ,an industrial department has been added to the ,tillotson this year and a ,superintendent of ,mechanical ,training has been appointed4 ,in addition to this goodly list of large institutions we point with pride to ,berea and ,hampton1 planted by the ,association4 ,howard ,university also receives support in its department of ,theology4 ,such is the brief record of the educational work in the ,south during the year4 ,thoreau paid a splendid tribute to ,john ,brown when he said of him in reference to his neglect of the schools3 8,he let his ,greek accent slant in the wrong way in order to set upright human souls40 ,but these heroic teachers of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 are straightening ,greek accents1 solving mathematical problems1 and teaching the spelling book and the alphabet1 for the same grand purpose1 that they may set upright human souls4 ,salvation is the guiding purpose of this educational work4 ,this purpose is not forgotten amid the rush and fret of school cares and duties4 ,,church ,,work4 ,number of ,churches #abg ,number of ,missionaries #ajc ,number of ,church members #g1hif ,added during the year #a1aig ,scholars in our ,sunday-schools #ae1aji ,these statistics show a substantial gain over last year4 ,seven new churches have been organized during the year4 ,these are situated as follows3 ,decatur and ,riverside ,plantation1 ,ala42 ,hammond1 ,la42 ,university ,church at ,new ,orleans2 ,petty1 ,texas2 ,combs1 ,ky42 and ,andersonville1 ,ga4 ,the hills and valleys of the old prison pen at ,andersonville doubtless sometimes echo with the songs1 and with the prayers of these ,negro disciples1 loyal to the heart's core to ,new ,england ,congregationalism4 ,five churches have been dropped from the list this year1 as changed conditions of communities made it unwise to continue them4 ,there has been during the year a quiet ,christian work throughout the ,south1 which has borne gratifying fruits1 over #a1jjj having confessed ,christ for the first time4 ,the ,sunday-school enrollment has increased by nearly #b1jjj4 ,the contributions of these churches also show a healthful increase4 ,they contributed this year for benevolence1 outside of their own work1 #b1cbb4ea1 and for their own church purposes1 #af1jad4ej1 making a grand total of #ah1ccg4ja4 ,this was an increase over the previous year of #faj4if in their benevolences1 and #c1jge4fa in the total4 ,this is an average contribution of #b4cb per member for every man1 woman and child in these churches4 ,the average membership of these churches1 planted among a humble people who have no ,congregational trend nor training1 stands at the encouraging number of #fb for each church1 while the average membership for each ,congregational ,church west of the ,mississippi is only #dc4 ,and these people in the ,south are loyal ,congregationalists4 ,although 8a wild olive tree and graffed in among the branches1 they already partake of the root and fatness of the olive tree40 ,the old argument urged by their ,baptist brethren that the ,bible tells of ,john the ,baptist1 but no where of ,john the ,congregationalist1 has lost its power to shake their faith in the church of ,paul and ,john ,robinson4 ,an old black man recently arose in a prayer-meeting and most solemnly1 with eager voice and emphatic gesticulation1 exclaimed3 8,i am a ,congregational1 and ,i mean to continue a ,congregational till ,i get up yonder1 #8,where congregations ne'er break up1 ,and ,sabbaths never end4'0 ,they have found ,congregationalism in their old hymn book1 which is the next thing to their ,bible4 ,at the annual meeting in ,cleveland in #ahhb1 in the report of the ,committee on ,church ,work1 is found the following3 8,the rate of progress during the last seventeen years has been uniformly constant1 about five churches per year4 99 99 ,the question now comes1 whether it is not quite time to change the rate by doubling it2 at least to quicken the pace40 ,do the facts show that this suggestion has been followed8 ,since #ahhb fifty-five churches have been organized1 an average of eleven per year for the five years since #ahhb--more than double the old rate of five per year2 another illustration of our ,lord's words1 8,be it unto you according to your faith40 ,in #ahhb1 #gji were added to the churches2 in #ahhg1 #a1aig were added4 ,but the advancement in the ,sunday-school work in our churches is still more remarkable4 ,the total ,sunday-school enrollment1 as it appears in the annual report of #ahhb1 was #g1hce1 but we are able to report this year an enrollment of #ae1aji1 an increase in these five years of #g1bgd1 or nearly #ajj per cent4 ,these years have witnessed marvelous progress in systematic care for the children and youth by the churches of the ,association4 ,the year just closing has been a year of building activity in the church work4 ,five new meeting houses have been erected2 four of these are among the mountain people and one among the freedmen4 ,one new feature in our church work is the organization of two churches composed principally of ,congregationalists from the ,north1 who have taken up their residence in the ,south4 ,they needed help and organized under the care of the ,association4 ,although we have no great ,pentecostal baptism to record this year1 we reverently speak our thanks 8that the ,lord has added to the church almost daily1 such as are being saved40 ,,mountain ,,work4 ,when the ,executive ,committee of the ,american ,missionary ,association 8decided to offer these mountain people the aid of our system10 probably even this far-seeing committee did not fully realize the magnitude of the work1 nor the grand possibilities of the field4 ,the few feeble churches that then existed are scarcely recognized now in the larger work that has grown up independently of them and miles away4 ,indeed1 in entering this region in #ahhb we were only putting the plow into the field1 which had been already turned by pioneer laborers of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,before the war a brave man had pushed his way back into these mountain fastnesses in ,christ's name4 ,he went under commission from this ,association4 ,he opened a school2 his work was successful4 ,into his school he put a library for the use of his pupils4 ,in this library there was a volume of ,wesley's sermons and1 among these1 one against the sin of slavery4 ,this book got into the hands of a pro-slavery family4 ,it was told that the preacher was teaching anti-slavery doctrine4 ,excitement in this back mountain region was intense4 ,a mob was organized4 ,they seized this missionary1 bound him1 beat him1 and took him some two miles over the mountains and threw him into a cabin1 and left two men as guards at the doors1 while they1 with their habitual delay1 went to their homes for their dinner4 ,they intended to return and inflict sorer punishment and perhaps hang him4 ,two mountain lads1 brothers1 heard of this outrage4 ,they were pupils of this godly school-master and loved him4 ,each one1 unknown to the other1 went by a different path to the cabin with his rifle on his shoulder4 ,they took out their teacher1 cut the cords that bound him1 and while he and his terrified wife at his side climbed the mountain1 pushing their way to the ,ohio river1 these stalwart mountain lads kept back the mob with the threatening use of their unerring rifles4 ,this missionary and his heroic wife finally reached the river and escaped4 ,now for the wonderful climax to that history4 ,we have recently organized a ,congregational ,church where these thrilling scenes occurred4 ,among the original members who united in the bonds of freedom-loving ,congregationalism were these two men who when boys defended this teacher at the risk of their own lives4 ,a neat little church stands near this prison cabin of the past1 and the bell that hangs in its belfry1 whose tones fall now upon no slave's ear1 was contributed by the wife of this first missionary to this mountain region4 ,such was the heroic beginning of the ,association's work among these mountains4 ,god had not forgotten during the years that passed1 the tears and blood and prayers of these brave sufferers for ,christ's sake4 ,this mountain work now is divided into two well-defined fields1 both important4 ,the field in ,kentucky has for its base the ,louisville and ,nashville ,railroad1 which has been built since our present missionary force began their work in this region4 ,the central point of this work is ,williamsburg4 ,here we have a large and prosperous academy and church4 ,eleven whole counties are easily reached from this center and only one of these has as yet been occupied4 ,in addition to the work at ,williamsburg1 there are two primary schools and five organized churches and constantly increasing numbers of missionary stations in this field4 ,chapels have been erected in ,s4 ,williamsburg and ,woodbine and are used for public service4 ,a pastor has been settled over the church at ,williamsburg and has taken up the work with great efficiency4 ,the ,general ,missionary has been relieved from the pastoral duties which he has borne before1 and has larger opportunity for outside work which is pressing upon him4 8,can we not have at least one pastor for each county80 is the painfully urgent plea of one of the faithful workers in this field4 ,the other field of mountain work lies along the ,cumberland ,mountains in ,tennessee4 ,its base is the ,cincinnati ,southern ,railroad1 and the work extends far back into the mountains4 ,twenty-two counties are here accessible to our pastors and teachers4 ,we have in this field two flourishing schools1 one at ,grand ,view and the other away up on the ,cumberland plateau1 at ,pleasant ,hill4 ,besides these schools1 there are also churches at ,grand ,view1 ,pleasant ,hill1 ,pomona1 ,robbins1 ,slick ,rock and ,helenwood4 ,last year a new school was taken under the care of the ,association at ,sherwood1 ,tenn4 ,we have thus surrounded this vast mountain region with our missionary forces4 ,a ,general ,missionary has been put into this field during the past year and the work opens upon him with constantly increasing magnitude4 ,these people are ,americans in every sense of the word1 ninety-eight per cent of the population of some counties having been born where they still live4 ,those who come into the region from other parts of the same ,state they call foreigners4 ,a missionary in writing recently from this field says3 8,i asked how many of them in the meeting had ,bibles in their homes1 and out of fifteen or eighteen families represented only two of them had ,bibles40 ,another missionary asked a girl seventeen years old if they had a book in her house4 8,a book1 what is a book80 was the astonishing question4 ,a book was described to her4 8,oh6 yes10 she said1 8,i believe there was one in the cabin before grandmam died1 but it was lost so long ago ,i plumb forgot how it looked40 ,this is our work4 ,only the edges of this great field have been gleaned4 ,will you not let us send our harvesters right into the heart of this ripening grain to gather in the name of our ,god8 ,,indian ,,work4 ,the ,indian work is chiefly in ,nebraska and ,dakota4 ,the following is the summary for the year3 ,churches #e ,church members #cgj ,added during the year #dc ,schools #ah ,pupils in ,schools #fjh ,missionaries and ,teachers #fa ,the report shows an encouraging increase in church membership4 ,this means the redemption of souls from heathenism4 ,the three principal stations in the ,north are ,santee1 ,oahe1 and ,fort ,berthold4 ,the work has been strengthened in each of these stations during the year4 ,the ,santee ,normal ,school celebrated its seventeenth birthday during the past year4 ,it was the first school of its kind established among this nation and its fruitful history abundantly proves the wisdom of its planting4 ,superior normal training is given the students in this school4 ,the enrollment this year was #aie4 ,twenty-six students were gathered in the theological department1 many of whom will doubtless become missionaries to their own people4 ,pilgrim ,church at ,santee has enjoyed a year of prosperity4 ,eighteen have been added to the membership1 eleven on the confession of their faith4 ,at ,rosebud ,agency three villages1 including about #h1jjj ,indians1 are open to missionary influence1 and the work is being pushed with increased vigor4 ,jacob ,good ,dog1 a converted ,indian1 was the ,boniface in this field4 ,among the ,ponca ,indians1 in ,nebraska1 the work had been carried on with about the usual results4 ,,oahe4--,this mission includes a training school and eleven out-stations on the ,cheyenne and ,grand rivers4 ,nineteen have been added to the ,oahe church1 on confession of their faith1 during the year4 ,a young man has been ordained as missionary to the ,indians1 and enters this field on ,grand river for his life work4 ,he has caught the spirit of ,edwards1 and ,eliot and ,brainard4 ,,fort ,,berthold has passed a year of prosperity4 ,new work is opening in this field4 ,i quote from a recent letter3 8,since my last letter we have had very interesting and serious developments4 ,the ,gros ,ventres and ,mandan tribes1 situated #bj and #dj miles from us1 have little or no religious instruction1 only as they come to us4 ,these two tribes we are hoping some of our young men who are away at school will be ready soon to work with40 ,s',,kokomish ,,agency lies #a1jjj miles to the west of ,fort ,berthold1 in ,washington ,territory4 ,the church here has also been blessed during the year with revival influences and four have united with it on confession of faith4 ,these ,indian missions have been visited personally during the year by two of the ,secretaries of the ,association1 and the work has been carefully inspected4 ,,santa ,,fe1 ,new ,mexico1 still receives a fixed appropriation from the ,association for the ,indian department of its ,university1 the ,principal and teachers being appointed by the ,association4 ,fourteen ,apache girls have been among the pupils during the year--the first ,apaches that have ever been gathered in our schools4 ,they prove to be bright and docile pupils4 ,,chinese ,,work4 ,missions #ag ,missionaries #bh ,pupils enrolled #a1jdd ,hopeful conversions #aej ,given up idolatry #baa ,the report of the ,superintendent is both joyful and sad4 ,the numbers of those who have given up idol worship and those hopefully converted are the largest it has ever been our privilege to report2 but the work has labored under great embarrassment in the serious diminution of funds4 ,the resources for the current work were necessarily reduced by more than #c1jjj4 ,new doors are opening in this ,chinese work4 ,the ,japanese are now ripe for schools and churches1 and a small beginning has been made in this direction4 ,this work is open to us1 and the command to enter is written in the imperative4 ,,woman',s ,,bureau4 ,only four years have passed since the ,woman's ,bureau became a recognized department of our work1 although it existed in reality for many years before4 ,these years have abundantly proven its efficiency4 ,it is useful especially along three lines3 ,first1 in assisting the women who are engaged as teachers to understand and grasp their work2 again1 in reaching the mothers and sisters of the pupils with purifying ,christian influences1 as they could not be reached in any other way2 and also1 in bringing information to the benevolent women of the ,north in regard to the special needs of their degraded and helpless sisters in the ,south4 ,the shocking story of their degradation can be told only by women to women4 ,along all these lines of service the ,woman's ,bureau has been especially successful during the past year4 ,its usefulness is greatly increased because it is an organic part of a larger ,association1 and thus gains a wider field of vision4 ,the range of its operations is constantly enlarging4 ,,finances4 ,,receipts4 ,from ,churches1 can we do the work which the ,lord has put upon us1 and at the same time not increase this debt8 ,it looked1 at times1 as if it would prove impossible4 ,for the month of ,february the receipts were #i1jjj less than last year for the same month1 and even so late as ,july there was a falling off of #ag1jjj for the month4 ,the magnificent rally in ,september brought into the treasury a splendid sum1 and the problem was solved4 ,through carefully studied economy in the expenditures1 by persistent efforts in the collecting field1 and by the large and generous benevolences of the churches1 all under ,god's good providence1 this has been accomplished4 ,the current expenses of the year are all paid2 the debt with which we began the year is all cancelled1 and we enter this new year with the good sum of #b1aic4hj on the credit side of the ledger4 ,but this will provide for the current expenses of the ,association only about two days4 ,this has been a perilous experiment4 ,the work has suffered1 although none of it has been given up4 ,the total number of missionaries has been reduced4 ,teachers and pastors have been overworked4 ,new fields1 8white to the harvest10 have been ungathered and left to possible blight4 ,we praise ,god for this deliverance1 but earnestly pray that we may not again need the chastening discipline of a like experience4 ,such is the record of our mortifying lack of service4 ,a beginning has again been made1 this time in ,oakland4 ,mr4 ,n4 ,kusaki1 a young ,japanese who was graduated last summer from the ,pacific ,theological ,seminary1 led off in the undertaking4 ,he still assists in it1 though it has now been placed in the hands of an ,american lady as the principal teacher4 ,it is an experiment at present1 but gives good promise of
