in its action on the ,glenn ,bill4 ,the sentiment of the civilized world is against them4 ,of this they might easily satisfy themselves2 yet it is reported that ,mr4 ,glenn1 during one of his speeches in favor of his infamous chain-gang bill1 cried out3 8,what do the people of ,georgia care for the sentiment of the world80 ,there is evidence1 however1 ,mr4 ,glenn to the contrary notwithstanding1 that ,georgia does care for the sentiment of the world4 ,in the ,senate the bill has been called to a halt1 and several attempts have been made to modify it4 ,here is a bill that has been passed by the ,assembly about as unanimously as was the ,glenn ,bill3 8,resolved by the ,house of ,representatives1 the ,senate concurring3 ,that in future the ,governor be directed not to draw his warrant for the annual appropriation of #h1jjj to ,atlanta ,university1 under the act of ,march #c;d1 #ahhd1 until such a plan of expenditure as will secure the exclusive use of the same for the education of the colored children1 in accordance with the declared and settled policy of the ,state on the subject of the co-education of the races1 has been submitted and approved by the ,commission constituted in said act for the supervision of the expenditure of said appropriation4 8,resolved further3 ,that said ,commission be directed to see that said fund is faithfully applied according to said plan of expenditure1 and in no other way40 ,this bill is practically as wicked as the one for which it is offered as a substitute4 ,as the ,new ,york ,independent says1 it 8imposes a fine of #h1jjj per year upon an institution for permitting the child of a teacher to recite to his own father40 ,such legislation is a disgrace to the century4 ,private and missionary schools should have the fullest liberty in this ,republic to teach whom they will4 ,a missionary school opens its doors and says1 in the language of the gospel whose teachings it is bound to follow1 ,whosoever will1 may come4 ,the ,georgia ,legislature sets itself up above the gospel1 and says1 ,whosoever will1 may not come4 ,shame upon the ,state that1 while calling itself ,christian1 dares to legislate in violation of ,christian principle4 ,it will not1 it cannot prosper1 till it changes its course4 ,what the final outcome will be we cannot yet say2 but this is certain1 the legislation will be against our principles and our work4 ,in the meantime1 it is pertinent for us to ask the churches if they intend to stand by us as we attempt to stand for the principles on which as an ,association we rest--principles that we believe to be the very essence of the gospel8 ,to close this year with a debt would certainly be a great discouragement in our work4 ,friends1 bend to the rescue with a will4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indian ,,language ,,in ,,mission ,,work4 ,there has been severe and just criticism on the policy of the ,indian ,commissioner prohibiting the use of the vernacular in the schools among the ,indians1 not only in those sustained by the ,government1 but in those supported wholly by private contributions4 ,we wish to give due credit to the ,commissioner4 ,he is honest in his purpose1 and his general aim is good4 ,he is right in wishing to make the ,indian a civilized man1 and not a civilized ,indian4 ,the ,indian dross must be taken out and the manhood-gold polished4 ,a man's language is a part of himself1 and the language of the ,indian1 while it is rich in metaphors relating to natural scenery1 comparatively pure in reference to the social virtues1 and exalted in its conception of the ,great ,spirit1 yet1 in many respects1 it holds him to his old life1 with its cruelties and superstitions4 ,it is true that as the ,roman and ,greek languages1 conveying originally only human and mythological ideas1 came at length to be the vehicle for ,christian meanings1 so may the ,indian's vernacular4 ,but the process is long and tedious1 and the number of ,indians who use it is so small and its vocabulary is so meagre1 that the effort to make it a permanent vehicle for thought and speech is not worth making1 especially as there is a language so much better just at hand4 ,the only question relates to the mode of transition from the one to the other1 and how far the ,indian tongue can be made a means of more speedily and accurately teaching the ,english2 or1 rather1 how far the ,indian language can be used to help the ,indian into a ,christian civilization4 ,here is the ,commissioner's great mistake4 ,no square rule is wise4 ,it depends on persons1 locations and surroundings4 ,for example3 #a4 ,the ,indian pupil at ,hampton or ,carlisle is surrounded by ,english-speaking people1 and he will learn ,english perforce1 as an ,englishman learns ,french in ,france1 or ,german in ,germany4 ,yet even here the process is slow4 ,the ,indian youth is so bashful that he makes reluctant use of his opportunities1 so that it requires three or four years to acquire the ,english language at ,hampton2 and withal1 an interpreter is an essential helper there4 #b4 ,the ,indian boy at the ,santee ,normal ,school has only the teachers as his ,english-speaking associates2 the rest are ,dakotas4 ,he must spend toilsome years in getting a little knowledge through a dense medium1 when an occasional ,dakota word would at once illuminate the meaning of the ,english4 ,what the pupil wants is ,english ideas1 rather than ,english words4 ,whatever will give this should be used4 #c4 ,but the greatest difficulty is in the schools at out-stations1 which have a missionary aim4 ,here the idea is mainly the making of ,christian character and life4 ,the teacher is usually a native1 a pupil from the ,santee or ,oahe schools4 ,he has some knowledge of ,english1 enough to enable him to give more precise and better meaning to the ,dakota1 but not enough to enable him to teach or preach in it1 and if he could his hearers would not understand him4 ,he must use his native tongue mainly1 or not work at all4 ,the ,missionary ,societies would find their work ruinously crippled if these out-stations were cut off4 ,they are the pioneers of missionary work4 #d4 ,then1 again1 there is the mass of the adult ,indians that can never learn a new language4 ,they must hear the gospel in their native tongue1 or never hear it4 ,the ,president of the ,united ,states1 ,secretary ,lamar and ,commissioner ,atkins have all committed themselves to the value--nay1 the necessity--of religion as a lever for the elevation of the ,indian4 ,do they mean now to forbid the ,missionary ,societies from training teachers and preachers for these people8 ,this is an assumption of authority that befits ,russia1 and we are sure the people of these free ,united ,states will submit to no such ,star-,chamber dictation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,memorial ,,on ,,indian ,,education4 ,,adopted ,,by ,,the ,,chicago ,,ministers' ,,meeting4 ,to his ,excellency the ,president of the ,united ,states3 ,the ,congregational ministers of ,chicago and vicinity1 in their weekly session at the ,grand ,pacific1 ,september #eth1 to the number of thirty-five1 desire to memorialize you in behalf of a modification of the recent orders of the ,indian ,department1 whereby the use of the native language is interdicted in all ,indian reservation schools1 not only those that are under ,government patronage1 in whole or in part1 but also those that are private or are under missionary societies4 ,from the first we have favored the policy proposed by missionaries among the ,indians1 now adopted by the ,government1 and heartily approved by yourself1 of bringing these aborigines into ,american citizenship and of securing them land in severalty1 with the surplus turned into a school fund4 ,nor do we question the motives of the heads of the ,indian ,department4 ,indeed this is forefended by the fact1 as semi-officially stated1 that 8the question of the effect of the policy of the office upon any missionary body has never been considered20 and this fact gives us the more assurance in soliciting you1 that the missionary view may yet receive a due consideration4 ,we are clear1 with the ,indian officials1 that in the effort to ,americanize these natives1 the ,english language must be introduced as fast as possible4 ,but we would not do this to the total exclusion of the native tongues in the missionary and interior station schools1 being confident that the final result will be more speedily secured by the use1 in part1 of the ,indian language4 ,we are confident that the greatest civilizing power among any pagan people will be that which comes from the ideas and the influence of the ,christian religion2 and that these can be made most effective through the ,bible of that religion in the native tongue4 ,this has been the wisdom of missions in all times and countries1 and none the less in those to the ,indians of ,america4 ,by this process alone have we secured the civilized 8nations0 we now have in the ,indian ,territory1 in ,new ,york1 in ,wisconsin and in other parts of our country4 ,so the missionaries to the ,sioux gave them the ,bible1 the catechism1 ,pilgrim's ,progress1 spelling-books and readers in their own dialect1 and in this way gave them the really ,american ideas1 as well as the religion of ,christ4 ,and what is the result8 ,two thousand of them gathered into the ,christian church and twice that number civilized4 ,of the people it is not possible that any but the children will be taught ,english1 and of these1 for a long time1 only a small portion4 ,for the adult people and even for the young1 as for the process of helping them to heaven1 8one hour of their vernacular is worth a cycle of any other tongue10 and this must be from the native's ,bible in hand4 ,the new order will close eighteen schools and stations of our missionary body1 and as many more under the care of the ,episcopalians and ,presbyterians4 ,it will deprive seven or eight hundred children of the instruction they are fitted to receive1 and will prevent access to about #f1jjj who are near these schools1 but not yet reached4 ,principal ,belfield of our ,chicago ,manual ,training ,school1 after a recent visit to the ,normal and ,industrial ,training ,school of the ,santee ,agency1 under ,rev4 ,alfred ,l4 ,riggs1 reported in one of our dailies1 in terms of the warmest admiration and commendation1 of the comprehensive system of manual1 industrial and moral training of that school1 which he declared was working a wonderful transformation among the ,indian youth of both sexes4 ,and yet it is against this school in particular that the new orders are aimed4 ,and this1 not because the ,english language is not chiefly used there1 but solely because the ,dakota1 in connection with the ,english1 is used at school in reading the ,bible and singing gospel hymns4 ,the station schools back in the interior of the ,sioux ,reservation1 under native teachers only1 having no connection with the ,government1 are also ordered closed4 ,but these teachers have been trained at the ,santee and ,oahe schools1 to which some of their pupils have been brought forward2 and these again furnish the scholars who are secured for the institutions at the ,east where the ,english is exclusively used4 ,this process shows the relation of the vernacular schools to those of the advanced ,english4 ,it also shows how unfair it is to decide the whole case of teaching exclusive ,english by the selected specimens to be found at ,hampton and ,carlisle4 ,this plan keeps up a connection between the young and the old1 between the raw interior and the more civilized front4 ,it agrees with the established policy for assimilating people of foreign tongues in our country--that of using both the vernacular and the ,english in their public worship4 ,it would be a gross usurpation for our country to interdict such peoples from thus using their native language in parish schools for imparting their own religious views of truth and duty4 ,we feel sure that to insist that these new candidates for citizenship1 in addition to all the other new things implied in this revolution of their old ways1 shall be tied up in all their schools to a new language1 will be a disheartenment that will defeat the desired result4 ,our petition is1 that you will secure such a modification of the recent orders as will allow1 in private and mission schools1 a discretionary use of the native along with the ,english language1 and all this in order1 as we think1 to spend two months4 ,mr4 ,riggs has sent word to all the out-stations that the parents and relatives of the children were expected to come here for their children at that time4 ,as school closed on ,wednesday1 those living at a distance of ninety miles started the ,saturday previous4 ,many of them reached ,oahe on ,tuesday1 and on ,wednesday morning we watched them coming in in their white covered wagons and on their ponies4 ,stopping near the river they pitched their tents1 and thus had temporary homes4 ,there were here then one hundred and fifty in number who came from all parts of the 8,cheyenne ,river ,agency ,reservation10 and some from the 8,spotted ,tail ,agency40 ,the mission house was open to all1 and not a few came at once to pay their respects1 staying only a few moments4 ,the school exercises were intensely interesting4 ,the delighted parents in their blankets and with feathers in their hair1 looking uncouth enough to please the most fantastic taste1 themselves satisfied beyond qualification1 seated and standing1 filled every available space when the exercises began4 ,these were recitations and songs1 etc41 which made even the phlegmatic red people smile audibly4 ,one little fellow named ,mark 8spoke his piece0 as follows3 8,i am a little boy ,not quite four feet high1 ,i hope when ,i grow big ,i'll not be quite so shy2 ,i can't be very sure1 ,but ,i will surely try40 ,the unity of the human race was confirmed in the way in which ,mark picked at his trousers1 and in the way in which he did not know what to do with his hands and his feet during his eloquent oration4 ,the ,indians laughed at his embarrassment 8just like white folks40 ,the wives of the teachers and the ,christian women from the out-stations had come to this great entertainment4 ,they met at an ,indian home 7,spotted ,bear's7 and decided to call a meeting1 inviting ,miss ,collins to address them1 as she had just returned to her old home and people after a long absence4 ,about fifty women1 of whom about thirty were ,christians and twenty were in varied stages of darkness1 made the congregation4 ,miss ,collins opened the meeting with a hymn of rejoicing1 which was sung with a will by all the people4 ,next she read the verses in ,matt4 #e4--8,ye are a city set on a hill4 ,do men light a candle10--etc4 8,let your light shine40 ,speaking first to ,christians who have been taught1 she reminded them that the heathen were looking to them for help1 and that if they did not honor ,god and the ,church1 then1 instead of giving light to their people1 they were making the darkness more dense--that even from the far-away districts they knew what the ,indians at ,oahe and up and down the ,cheyenne ,river were doing--and if they followed ,christ closely so would those beginning to see the light follow them4 ,it was as if they were making a road across the trackless plains2 if they kept on in a straight way1 avoiding all the bad places1 finding the good camping places by the way2--those who followed would be safe4 ,then she reported from her work at ,grand ,river1 trying to impress upon the women the necessity of working in their ,missionary ,society1 to earn money to help give the gospel to the people4 ,luluwin ,deprey1 a half-breed woman who became a ,christian and united with the church among the first converts1 reported from their workers on the ,cheyenne4 ,she brought fancy articles made of buckskin trimmed in beads and porcupine quills1 to be sold for the ,missionary ,society4 ,in all1 they will bring about ten dollars4 ,she spoke in a quiet1 modest way1 saying that in making all these things they had asked no help whatever to buy material4 ,they gave the material themselves1 so that all that they brought was clear gain to the work4 ,she urged the necessity of the church doing more1 saying3 8,we have now but little money on hand and ,september is not far off1 and we must work much4 ,we have been ,christian women for those who were living and dying without the gospel4 ,all people who are without the ,bible are alike4 ,none can live without the ,bible without starving the soul4 ,it is true we ,dakota ,christians are 8a city set on a hill40 ,bad actions are seen even farther than good ones4 ,if you keep your house well1 the others will learn from you4 ,if you keep your children well1 others learn from you4 ,if you pray1 so will others learn to pray4 ,it is now time for the ,dakotas to arise and with one action and one voice proclaim themselves children of ,christ4 ,jesus ,christ1 the ,son of ,god1 gave ,himself for us4 ,he was an only son1 and you and ,i know how precious ,he was to ,his ,father4 ,we must now give ourselves and all that we have to this work as these women 7the white women7 have done4 ,our ,indian ,missionary ,society has done but little1 but now let us truly lift up our hands and lay hold of this work4 ,we have learned the truth4 ,we must learn to be the leaders and walk before these people so that we may lead them to ,christ4 ,our missionary has brought tears in relating the sufferings of our people4 ,now let us see what we can do to bring the people found a band of ,indians1 numbering seventy-two souls1 who were converted from paganism at ,michipicoton over twenty years ago under the labors of the late ,rev4 ,geo4 ,mc,dougall4 ,they claim to be ,methodists1 and through all these years1 although separated from the body of their tribe1 they have kept their faith and maintained their religious worship without the aid of a missionary4 8,the addresses fervent and intelligent1 and they have not been corrupted by the vices of the white men4' ,persistent efforts have been made by bigoted ecclesiastics to seduce them from their allegiance to these churches not a few who cherish a paramount1 not to say an exclusive1 interest in foreign missions4 ,on the other hand1 there is another considerable number who cherish a like primary and preponderant concern for home missions4 ,many are ready to give largely to the work abroad1 but little to the domestic field1 and vice versa4 ,i regard this drawing of a sharp line of distinction and division of interest between the two departments of missionary activity as unfortunate and illogical4 ,foreign and home missions are in their essential nature one4 ,our navy1 when striking at an enemy in distant seas1 is in essential spirit and aim at one with our army operating within our own borders4 ,nevertheless1 the division of feeling1 however illogical1 exists1 and what ,i desire to say is1 that this ,american ,missionary ,association offers itself to the earnest interest of both parties1 because it combines in itself the elements of both the foreign and the home work4 ,in carrying the gospel to the ,indians and the ,chinese1 it is taking it to pagans4 ,so also1 in carrying it to many of the ,negroes and to the poor whites of the mountain regions of the ,south1 it is taking it to those whose ideas of religion are far more pagan than ,christian1 and whose gross superstition causes them to need the pure gospel as much as if they lived in ,india or ,japan4 ,so that this ,association may be rightly regarded as a foreign missionary agency4 ,and yet1 on the other hand1 these various populations to which ,i have referred are dwelling within our own borders1 are to a considerable extent a part of our body politic1 and are being more and more incorporated into it2 so that the work is also home missionary in its character4 ,and we may cordially and confidently commend this ,association to our churches1 because it combines both grand forms of religious enterprise4 ,to those most interested in carrying the ,gospel to pagans1 we can say1 8,we are doing that work10 and to those centering their regard upon the evangelization of our own land1 we can say1 8,we are laboring toward that end also40 ,but this ,association commends itself to us1 again1 because it has borne1 on account of those for whom it works1 a vast amount of obloquy and scorn1 but1 in spite of it all1 has persisted in exhibiting unflinchingly the innermost spirit of the ,gospel--namely1 that of self-sacrifice for the peculiarly needy1 and identification of itself with the cause of the outcast and forlorn4 ,foreign missions have not had to bear any stigma of contumely or disgrace4 ,home missions have even felt the favoring breath of popularity4 ,but this ,association1 in espousing the cause of what many regarded as pariah and outcast classes1 had to bear from certain quarters unmeasured obloquy and contempt4 ,but it bore them not only without shrinking1 but rejoicing that it was counted worthy to suffer for ,christ's sake4 ,its noble teachers and other workers1 in many and constant exhibitions of splendid heroism and self sacrifice1 gladly made the cause of the friendless and despised their own4 ,they have rejoiced to illustrate that great principle of the ,gospel1 that we owe not simply those who have done something for us1 but those for whom we can do something4 ,and they have believed1 and never failed to assert1 that the most infernal of all arguments and the very spawn of hell1 is that because a man is already under or inferior1 therefore you may still further oppress and keep him down4 ,that is just the reason for helping and lifting him up4 ,all honor to a society that has had1 and that has cordially accepted1 the opportunity1 not afforded to all benevolent enterprises1 of illustrating the spirit of ,christianity in the midst of obloquy and scorn4 ,and then1 this ,association commends itself to our hearty regard by the breadth and enlightenment of its views concerning the work it undertakes4 ,it has intelligently grasped and acted upon the principle that the only effectual antidote for the gross superstition of the classes among which it labors is1 in the full sense of the term1 light--light educational1 moral1 religious4 ,it has not believed1 to its credit be it spoken1 that even a little learning is a dangerous thing1 but rather that it is better than none4 ,it knows that though intelligence without faith may be perverted to evil1 equally so may faith without intelligence4 ,if the former can make an infidel1 the latter can make a bigot4 ,if the former may make an ,ingersoll1 the latter may make a ,torquemada1 between whom there is little to choose4 ,by furnishing1 as the antidote of superstition1 at once secular1 moral and religious light1 this ,association gives fundamental and radical treatment to the evil1 and by the breadth and enlightenment of its views commends itself to our intelligent denomination4 ,need ,i rehearse the grand motives which should incite us to sustain this noble society in its work8 ,are we patriots8 ,then let us take the darkened masses of our land for ,protestantism1 for if we do not they will be taken for ,catholicism4 ,i am not blind to the many elements of good in the ,catholic church2 but one fact stands out bold and prominent in her long history1 viz43 that she is the foe of free institutions4 ,to be such is the instinct of an irresponsible hierarchy4 ,so long as the ,negro was without the ballot1 the ,romish church paid little heed to him2 but when she saw in his hand that white symbol of power1 she went for him1 for she takes the scent of power as quickly as the deerhound takes the tainted gale4 ,are we patriots8 ,then let us win the ,freedmen to ,protestantism and its liberty1 if we would not have them won to the ,papacy with its religious and political bondage4 ,need ,i mention that love of man which is a higher motive even than love of country1 that philanthropy which is a nobler incentive than patriotism8 ,or need ,i mention that love and loyalty to ,christ1 which is a motive finer than love of country and loftier than love of man8 ,under the mighty and splendid impulsion of all these incentives1 let us count it a privilege to give ourselves1 years she has been a faithful follower of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,she has been conspicuously the friend of missions1 and her zeal in this direction is greater now than ever4 ,she has been a contributor to the ,american ,missionary ,association ever since its formation in #ahdf4 ,the ,negro1 ,chinese and ,indian have had in her a true friend4 ,an ,indian girl whom she helped to educate sent her a picture and congratulations on her centennial anniversary4 ,the ,connecticut ,indian ,association passed special resolutions of kind appreciation1 which were presented to her on the same occasion4 ,fifty of her descendants and relatives sat down with her at the birthday dinner4 ,this was her centennial message to the company3 8,i have lived a century4 ,long have ,i tested the love of ,god and the faith in ,christ4 ,i want to recommend to you all that loving ,saviour who is my closest friend and my precious hope of glory40 ,she still retains to a remarkable degree health of body and vigor of mind4 ,the editor of ,,the ,,missionary 8presented the cause0 in ,new ,preston1 recently2 he of course called upon this venerable 8,mother in ,israel40 ,to his great regret1 she was not whether ,i hired one1 from time to time1 as the occasion demanded8 ,what a wild ,tam ,o',shanter ride it would be from ,washington to ,texas in four or five days6 ,but such a ride1 taken once or twice a year1 would only cover a small portion of the field of the ,association4 ,here on the west is the work among the ,indians1 stretching from ,santa ,f1 ,new ,mexico1 away up to ,dakota4 ,the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 has schools and churches all along the line4 ,this ,council in ,ohio gave its commission to a new harvester going out into this field4 ,mr4 ,cross is a graduate of ,adelbert ,college1 ,cleveland1 and of ,yale ,theological ,seminary4 ,he has had somewhat peculiar preparation for the missionary work upon which he now enters1 through experience gained in home missionary fields4 ,he enters upon this new work with his eyes open1 fully appreciating its hardships4 ,he will be located at ,park ,street ,station1 among the ,blanket ,sioux4 ,three villages1 containing some #h1jjj ,indians1 will constitute his parish4 ,his work will include school teaching and almost every form of religious service4 ,his nearest missionary neighbor will be at ,rosebud ,agency1 sixty-five miles away4 ,in #ahhe an old building was purchased from the natives1 and in #ahhf a new building was erected1 the ,park ,street ,church1 ,boston1 contributing the funds4 ,this building is not a modern parsonage1 with hot and cold water1 gas1 furnace1 and all the luxuries with which many churches delight to furnish their pastor's home4 ,this parsonage of the prairie is a log building1 with shingle roof1 containing two rooms2 and yet it answers the purpose for which it was built well4 ,a native missionary with ,christian passion for his people1 has gone into this field already4 ,brother ,cross follows ,jacob ,good ,dog1 who was the ,boniface in this pioneer missionary work4 ,in a letter written by ,francis ,frazier1 who is the son of ,rev4 ,artemus ,ehnamani1 the ,indian pastor1 there is the following pleading petition for his people3 8,thus ,god has blessed this people2 and that ,god will give them understanding to go on to comprehend ,his laws1 and that they may believe and have faith in ,him1 when you pray will you remember them80 ,this tender and passionate appeal for the ,indians gains additional emphasis by the going out of a new missionary to this field4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the churches and pastors of ,ohio ,i found were greatly stirred up by the proposed outrages against our missionaries and teachers in ,georgia4 ,cordial words were spoken on every side in endorsement of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and in condemnation of the un-,christian and un-,american attempts to violate personal liberty and freedom of conscience under the flimsy pretense of legal right4 ,a tremendous ,republican uprising will follow this attempt on the part of ,georgia to introduce again the policy of suppression and inhumanity that had its culmination1 years ago1 in the cruelties of the prison stockade of ,andersonville4 ,the thumb screw and rack and chain-gang as instruments for the suppression of freedom of opinion1 are things of the past1 and no feeble attempt to legalize them can be permanently successful in this land to-day4 ,sad news just reaches us from ,texas of the defeat of the prohibitory amendment to the ,state constitution4 ,ignorant ,mexicans were brought over the border to vote for rum1 and so overcame the honest vote of the ,christian and moral people of the ,state4 ,jefferson ,davis1 after permitting a member of the ,woman's ,christian ,temperance ,union1 who was more enthusiastic than patriotic1 to pin a silver badge of that society upon his coat in evidence of the esteem in which this prohibition society held him1 wrote a letter to the people in ,texas denouncing the prohibitory movement4 ,mr4 ,davis' prohibition seems much like his patriotism1 8conspicuous for its absence40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,charleston1 ,s4,c4 ,the past year has been a prosperous one for ,plymouth church1 notwithstanding the earthquake4 ,the people are struggling manfully toward self-support1 and will in the course of two or three years be able to relieve the ,association of the greater part1 if not the entire burden of the appropriation which is now granted to it4 ,the earthquake has proven of much benefit to ,charleston in various ways--a real blessing in disguise4 ,many houses have been repaired which probably would have remained unimproved1 and the city presents a more lively appearance than before the disturbance4 ,many persons were shaken into their senses from a spiritual standpoint1 and the work of ,god's servants has been greatly blessed4 ,we have reaped a goodly harvest4 ,during the past year and six months1 #ajb persons have united with the church1 about #be of whom were more or less impressed with the manifestation of ,god's power in the earthquake4 ,there are many careless1 lethargic places which might be benefited by a similar experience4 ,there has been more faithful preaching of the ,gospel to sinners since than before4 ,there is perhaps in the ,south1 as well as in the ,north1 too much of a tendency toward speculative and sthetic discourse1 rather than direct and comprehensive exposition of ,god's word4 ,wherever the cross of ,christ is preached with earnestness1 good results are sure to follow1 as is plainly shown in the sequel of the ,charleston earthquake4 ,we are working hard to raise funds for the erection of a parsonage for our church1 which will cost about #a1hjj2 we have raised already #djj1 and have the lot4 ,the parsonage completed and paid for will enable the church to become in a large measure self-supporting4 ,we shall lay the foundation as soon as half of the amount needed is raised4 ,we hope to begin this work the coming fall4 ,america is a wonderful mission field1 and we who are laboring in that field can appreciate the ,american ,missionary ,association and its work4 ,withdraw the influence of this work from the ,south1 and it would prove a calamity more serious in its results than a dozen earthquakes4 ,the needs of the work grow greater year by year1 and we rejoice that the hearts of a generous ,christian people are expanding and enlarging to meet the demand4 ,,geo4 ,c4 ,,rowe4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,shotgun ,,in ,,louisiana4 ,the outrage referred to in the following letter was perpetrated only a few weeks ago4 ,we suppress names and dates for obvious reasons4 ,we know the writer and can vouch for the truth of the statement4 ,we have in our possession additional and corroborative evidence4--,ed4 8,my very last days at school were saddened by a most distressing outrage in which the father and elder brother of one of my own good1 manly1 big boys1 were shot down in unjust1 merciless and indiscriminating slaughter2 the other two grown-up sons obliged to flee2 the mother1 grandmother and two younger children left desolate but not unfriended1 and the large1 rich and heavy crop1 which would have sufficed to send all the children to school next year1 of necessity abandoned4 ,that was the trouble3 the white men around were jealous of his business methods1 his prosperity who escaped1 a large1 strong young man4 ,he spoke with gratitude of the two white men who tried to save his father1 and he seemed disposed to leave the murderers entirely in the hands of the great ,judge of all1 saying1 #8,if the ,lord saw fit to punish them ,he could meet up with them any time4' 8,i said1 with a view to learning how this severe tribulation had affected his trust in ,christ--for he is but a young disciple--#8some people1 when great trouble is permitted to come upon them1 feel that the ,lord has deserted them4' ,he responded at once1 #8,i don't feel that way4 ,i think the ,lord must have been very near me when ,i was dodging through the young corn1 neither high enough nor thick enough to hide me in the bright morning light1 and they all shooting at me as if ,i had been a deer1 or they would certainly have killed me4' 8,in answer to some remarks of mine1 he said3 #8,you needn't be afraid of my taking to any meanness on account of this4 ,i never can find it in my heart to be mean to anybody4 ,i feel too sorry for people4' ,his only anxiety was to find work and make enough to get the rest of his people away from there4 8,when ,i went into my school room after hearing of this heart-rending affair1 a horror of great darkness came over me for an instant1 and a sound was in my ears as of a knell2 then the students' plaintive song seemed to vibrate through the air--,how long1 ,master1 how long8 ,these distressful experiences weigh heavily on the hearts and nerves of our missionaries1 who are here so nearly all the year around and have such a ,rev4 ,willis ,polk1 pastor of the ,colored ,congregational ,church of that place4 ,he came to ,fayetteville in the fall of #ahhd1 and took charge of the public school for the colored people2 and up until the time he was disabled by sickness1 he labored in the school-room during the week1 and preached in the little church1 which he had organized1 on the ,sabbath4 ,his education and his gifts as a preacher were above the average of his race4 ,he met death calmly and peacefully1 and died in the blessed hope of a home in heaven4 ,he was kindly nursed and provided for by the members of his little subterranean lake4 ,they ascended by means of a grape vine1 which a heavy woman broke1 so that part of the tribe were left below40 ,they are lighter in color than many other tribes1 and gray hair is often seen even among the young people4 ,they live with the ,arickarees and ,gros ,ventres1 in a very friendly way1 but are a distinct tribe by themselves1 with their old chief at their head4 ,little can be said in praise of their morals2 they are far below the ,sioux nation in this4 ,polygamy is very generally practiced1 although the younger people are beginning to adopt the white man's ways1 and to give up this with others of their old customs4 ,they are doing quite well at agriculture1 raising corn and wheat1 and storing hay4 ,the ,government supplies all those who seem industrious with implements and machines for use in farming2 and some of the men learn quickly their use and manipulation1 so that the results of their labor would often do a white farmer credit4 ,the great drawback to their success is their natural tendency to work awhile and then shirk awhile4 ,they soon tire of steady employment1 and form all kinds of excuses for absence4 ,like the ,irish1 they always have sick relatives who demand their attention at the most inopportune times4 ,this is not more characteristic of the ,mandans than of all ,indians4 ,the lack of discipline in their natures is a very great disadvantage1 and is something that missionaries and agents have constantly to fight4 ,of course1 for generations back the ,indians have followed their own sweet wills1 and have roamed the prairie and forest at pleasure1 traveling when they wished to travel1 and halting when they wished to halt1 so that the idea of any necessity for steady toil day after day1 is one that they grasp with difficulty4 ,they must learn first that there is a to-morrow--a fact they have never realized4 ,this accomplished1 a long step ahead will be gained4 ,little missionary work has been done among the ,mandans in their own language1 and few of them understanding other languages--even those of the ,arickarees and ,gros ,ventres--it is little they can learn of the ,christian's ,god and religion4 ,the fear of their own gods arouses them to sacrifice and worship1 often of the most horrible kind1 and even while they gaze with red1 swollen eyes at the sun1 in painful worship1 there is a yearning in their hearts for better1 higher things1 and this it is that prompts their heathen prayers to all nature1 through their ignorance of the one true source from which these better things can be4 ,while ,i have spoken of their ambitious attempts at agriculture as a tribe1 there are still many among them who are idle4 ,young ,indian men in the very prime of life1 powerful1 and abundantly able to labor with the strongest1 spend their days sitting around the camp fires with the old men and the dogs1 in among blackened kettles1 and all the filthy paraphernalia of their lodges--sit1 and smoke1 and talk1 and sleep4 ,i asked1 one day3 8,what are these people saying--what can they find to talk so much about80 8,oh10 said my ,indian companion1 8they talk of the old times--of their wars and their dances60 ,sad enough was the picture6 ,among these ,mandan people1 whom he calls his children1 lives an old man--a chief4 ,he stands somewhat between the wild ,indian and the civilized4 ,with yearnings after the civilization of which he has heard and known1 he is yet tied to the old ways through the want of a teacher and guide4 ,he is intelligent1 and anxious for a different state of affairs among his people4 ,two sons had he of great promise4 ,the elder went out to war against some hostile ,indians1 and died4 ,it was a great blow to his father1 who had looked to his sons for the deliverance of his people4 ,the younger son was sent to the ,normal ,school at ,santee1 to become educated1 and to learn of the white man's ways4 ,he is still there at school1 and his old father waits at home patiently1 while the years of preparation go on4 ,he sends occasional messages of encouragement to his son1 and is doing all in his power to prepare himself and people for the work ahead4 ,in order that he may conform to the customs his son is adopting1 he has even had his long hair shorn1 a year before the boy's return1 that it may please him to see his father as white men are4 ,long hair is to the ,indian very much what the cue is to the ,chinaman--he is slow to part with it4 ,a short time ago ,santee students were engaged in writing letters to ,eastern friends1 and the old chiefs son1 among the rest1 wrote of his home1 his people and his plans4 ,he was trying to tell what ,i have told--the condition of his tribe1 the lack of missionary work among them1 and their inability to understand the teachers of the other tribes4 ,as he wrote of this1 and of his plan to go back to them as a teacher1 his head dropped forward on his desk and the tears rolled down his cheeks as he realized the awful want of a starving nation--a nation crying out for the ,gospel of ,christ4 ,yet this was an ,indian boy--was once a wild ,indian1 a savage6 ,why will not ,christian people believe that the ,indian is a man--is a man with a soul6 ,why are we all so slow to understand that the ,indian has a heart and a mind6 ,surely ,god remembers the ,mandans4 ,god himself believes in the ,indian4 ,,mrs4 ,c4 ,w4 ,,shelton4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 ,,fruit ,,at ,,petaluma4 ,our ,petaluma mission has for several years been apparently barren4 ,its first years were by far its best ones4 ,it would have been abandoned but for the faith and self-denying persistency of its excellent teacher1 ,mrs4 ,m4 ,h4 ,colby4 ,throwing off #ej per cent4 of the meagre salary promised her when she entered upon the work2 soliciting aid from friends in ,petaluma2 interesting1 as far as possible1 her pupils to contribute1 she has made her mission the least expensive of them all2 and she has hoped against hope that the promise would sooner or later be fulfilled1 and her labor be not in vain in the ,lord4 ,others grew discouraged4 ,chinese helpers sent to work with her came back to urge that the work be suspended4 ,the hearts were too hard4 ,the families or clans represented in the ,chinese population of ,petaluma were too hostile one to another4 ,there was too much gambling2 there was too much opium4 ,even those who had attended the school for years1 seemed no less averse to ,christianity than those who had never entered the schoolroom door4 ,about three months ago the teacher was able to write me that she believed the ice was broken1 and that three of her pupils were really asking after the true ,god and salvation4 ,i had learned1 however1 by hard experience that the 8heathen ,chinee0--among other 8tricks that are vain0--can play pious on occasions1 and do it so well as to deceive the very elect4 ,more than once have ,i been compelled1 by the adverse reports of trustworthy ,christian ,chinese1 arrangements for him to be brought into the ,association on ,sunday evening4 ,on ,sunday morning five of us were going to the ,congregational church4 ,while we were passing through ,chinatown some of our countrymen1 about ten in number1 standing by the doors of the ,chinese shops began to make fun of us1 calling us #8cabbages4' ,this means1 in ,chinese1 a very dirty word1 and at the same time1 it has a sound very near to the word ,jesus in ,chinese4 ,after they had called us all by this name1 they turned especially upon ,wong ,tim ,ban 7the young ,christian7 saying to him3 #8,come1 have a smoke of opium before you go to church4' #8,come play cards with us once more4' ,in all this he kept silent1 and so did all of us4 ,after church was dismissed we came back the same way1 and they came down and read them to the people4 ,they said they were too hard1 so ,moses broke the stones and went back and told the ,lord that his commands were too hard1 so ,god gave him some easier ones4 ,again1 this minister is proving that ,jesus was baptized by 8mersion40 ,he says that when ,jesus came up out of the water1 he ran so fast to the wilderness that no one could keep up with him1 but they tracked him by the water that dripped from his clothes4 ,they tracked him in this way forty days before they found him4 ,some of the people near that school-house are anxious for better instruction1 and have applied to the ,association for a minister4 ,another school-house1 two miles from one of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 has been used for meetings held by a regularly licensed minister who does not know a letter4 ,some of his members say 8his sermons beat the 'postle ,paul10 and if noise and violent gestures count1 probably they are right4 ,there are many such preachers as those ,i have told you of1
