if things keep going on at the ,south as they have been1 is likely to become infamous4 ,he asserted for substance that the ,south had come to recognize the fact that in the war the ,north was right1 the ,south wrong1 that the ,negro has the fullest protection of our laws and the friendship of our people4 ,recently1 ,rev4 ,leonard ,w4 ,bacon1 who1 strange to say1 has been for some time pastor of the ,independent ,presbyterian ,church of ,savannah1 ,ga41 preached to his people a patriotic sermon4 ,he emphasized the importance of national patriotism4 ,he eulogized ,washington1 ,lincoln and ,grant4 ,he intimated that in the late unpleasantness the ,south was wrong4 ,the result of all this was an excited congregation1 an excited community1 and the development of such hostility that ,mr4 ,bacon will probably be forced to resign4 ,just a little while before the above incident1 a colored gentleman by the name of ,council was refused permission to ride in a first-class car1 though he had paid for and held a first-class ticket on the ,georgia ,central ,railroad4 ,mr4 ,council laid his grievance before the ,interstate ,commerce ,commissioners4 ,commissioner ,bragg1 of ,alabama1 happens to know the complainant1 and this is the way he testified concerning him3 8,i know ,council well4 ,he is one of the brightest and best of our colored citizens4 ,he is a stanch ,democrat1 and canvasses the ,state at every election for the ,democratic ticket4 ,he is not a man who desires to push himself forward because of any ambition to obtain social equality4 ,he is modest and unassuming4 ,he is a gentleman40 ,on another page1 ,field-,superintendent ,ryder tells us of treatment received on a ,georgia railroad by ,rev4 ,wm4 ,sinclair1 one of our missionaries4 ,it is rather singular that these incidents happened in ,georgia4 ,mr4 ,grady is the editor of the leading newspaper of that ,state4 ,he ought to be able to testify as to its thought and feeling upon the great questions that grew out of the war4 ,it seems to us that by this time he must begin to feel that his speech before the ,new ,england ,society in ,new ,york was a most unfortunate affair4 ,we shall be glad to find out what the ,new ,south is1 but we shall not be willing to take ,mr4 ,grady as an instructor4 ,the question still remains3 ,is there a ,new ,south8 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,fifth ,annual ,convention of the ,colored ,teachers' ,association of ,georgia was recently held in the ,house of ,representatives ,hall at ,atlanta4 ,upwards of one hundred colored teachers formed what the local press called an 8intelligent and decorous body40 ,the sessions continued for three days4 ,the papers gave full reports of the proceedings4 ,much popular interest was taken4 ,many white people attended4 ,the range of the discussions was wide4 ,the science of teaching in all of its departments was introduced by papers and addresses1 and evoked very general discussion4 ,it was a convention of both interest and power4 ,it was a demonstration1 beyond all doubt1 of the ,negro's intellectual capacity and of his willingness to use and improve it4 ,one of our ,atlanta teachers writing us about this convention says3 8,i wish our ,northern friends could have attended it4 ,i am sure1 if they could have done so1 those who are helping would want to help more1 and those who never have helped would be stirred up to lend a hand in raising up a people1 so many of whom have proven and are proving that they can be raised4 ,certainly those of us here on the field can but feel encouraged and strengthened to go on40 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,graduate ,,and ,a ,,porter4 ,there appeared in an ,atlanta paper a few days ago1 a paragraph stating that a young ,negro man of ,atlanta1 who had the best university education1 was acting as a porter in a cotton room1 and that all but two of his class1 perhaps thirty1 had dropped back into just such work as he was doing1 and saying that perhaps a good deal of higher education was wasted4 ,this paragraph has been copied by a large number of papers and is likely to injure the cause of education among the colored people1 and for this reason it seems necessary to call attention to the errors it contains4 ,the young man referred to has not a university education1 but left school during his freshman year4 ,he was not a member of a class of about thirty1 although sometimes when his class recited with one in the normal department1 the two combined probably reached about that number4 ,while he was junior preparatory his class numbered ten1 and when he was college freshman1 eleven4 ,of these eleven1 three went through the course and were graduated4 ,two of these are teaching1 one in ,texas1 and the other as principal of a school in ,chattanooga4 ,the third graduate is employed by a wealthy resident of ,atlanta1 at whose home he always has lived1 as collector of rents1 etc41 and may be said to be 8in business40 ,so1 instead of the young man in question having a university education1 he did not finish his freshman year2 instead of his being a member of a class of thirty1 his class numbered only eleven2 and instead of thirty falling from the sublime heights of university graduates to the low estate of porters in cotton houses1 the three of that class who completed their college course are occupying the important positions mentioned above4 ,unfortunately this instance of misrepresentation is not an isolated case1 but one of a thousand of similar character4 ,the statement that the graduates from colored colleges are all idle vagabonds1 has become too stale to produce an impression any longer when made in the abstract4 ,now what are the facts upon this point8 ,let the published list of graduates from the ,atlanta ,university1 with their occupations1 answer4 ,this school has a classical course of study covering a period of seven years1 for pupils who have completed the common ,english branches4 ,from this have been graduated forty students in ten classes averaging four to a class4 ,this university has also a normal course of four years1 for admission to which the same is required as for admission to the classical course4 ,from this have been graduated in thirteen classes one hundred pupils1 averaging about eight to a class4 ,of the forty graduates from the classical course1 five are dead1 eight are in the service of the ,u4,s4 ,government1 four are pastors of churches1 one is a lawyer1 two are in the theological seminary1 one is engaged in business in ,atlanta1 and the remaining nineteen are teaching4 ,none are unemployed and all are engaged in occupations in which considerable education is required1 and a thorough one is desirable4 ,it ought to be added that two of these graduates are professors in colleges1 one is editing a respectable weekly newspaper1 besides teaching1 and one of those in the service of the ,government has been promoted three times upon merit alone4 ,of the one hundred graduates from the normal department1 six have died1 seventeen are keeping house for their husbands1 one is in a medical school1 one is pursuing a college course1 one is a mail carrier1 one is still living at home1 one is a hired housekeeper1 and the remaining seventy-two are teaching4 ,with reference to putting an education to a practical use1 how many schools in the ,united ,states can show a better record8 ,it may be said that a thorough education is not required to fit a person for a government position1 such as clerks in departments1 postal route agents and letter-carriers4 ,but if such an education enables one who has it to get from sixty to one hundred and thirty dollars a month instead of seventy-five cents a day in the city whenever he can obtain a job1 or ten dollars a month and 8rashuns0 in the country1 it becomes to him an eminently and interestingly practical thing4 ,even in the case of this young ,negro porter1 the gentleman under whom he works says he could hire some one else to do the same work for half his wages1 but he prefers his services at the double cost4 ,if three years of ,latin and two and a third years of ,greek and the mathematics that go with them double the value of the services of a colored youth1 let us challenge studies that are usually considered more practical to show a better record and be careful how we speak sneeringly of higher education4 ,but are occupations for the fullest use of a higher education by colored people limited8 ,they certainly are4 ,a white pastor may minister to a colored church1 a white teacher may instruct colored children1 a white physician may prescribe for a colored patient1 a white attorney may counsel for a colored client1 a white mechanic may employ colored laborers1 a white merchant may serve colored customers1 but in none of these spheres does the rule work both ways except in a few rare instances4 ,so the services of educated colored people in the professions and in business are confined to their own race1 and in that they are crowded by their white competitors4 ,furthermore they are not welcomed to these higher walks of life even among their own people by their neighbors of the more powerful race2 but the general and almost universal public sentiment is in favor of keeping them down4 ,more than this1 many of their own race prefer the services of white lawyers1 physicians1 ministers1 teachers1 mechanics and merchants4 ,under all these adverse circumstances and others that might be named1 it requires great courage and perseverance in a colored youth to complete a full course of study4 ,but should they be encouraged or dissuaded8 ,if the philosophy of civilization teaches anything it teaches that ,nature intended that every man should make the most of himself1 and every race should attain the highest possible development2 and if ,christianity teaches anything it teaches the same lesson4 ,unless some one knows for certain that the ,negro is the descendant of ,ham1 and that the descendants of ,ham have not yet served their time in hewing wood and drawing water1 why not test the virtue of this rather queer theory by trying1 on a small scale1 the experiment of giving ,negroes the opportunity of acquiring all the education their mental capacity is capable of receiving1 and looking on to see what they will do with it1 and what effect it will have upon the race1 and not expect that every individual will be a success or achieve high place among men8 ,as the masses become enlightened the demand for well educated men and women must increase4 ,the 8cornfield preacher0 who depends upon the 8,sperrit0 will step down and out1 and the seminary graduate1 with 8,bible religion0 will take his place4 ,thoroughly trained and equipped colored lawyers and physicians will conquer the prejudice that now exists among their own people against them1 and will conquer it the more easily if they are better prepared for work than their white competitors4 ,all this need not come about in one generation4 ,we can transmit the work1 with our faith and our hopes1 as a legacy to our children4 ,but1 however divergent the views of different people may be upon these questions1 there certainly is no immediate occasion for a howl against the higher education of the ,negro1 for there is not enough of it to feed the flames of a respectable controversy4 ,only a fraction of the so-called universities south of ,washington open to colored students have a collegiate course of study1 and the entire number of graduates from such a course can be expressed by two ciphers and a small significant figure4 ,what are a hundred or two of college graduates among six or seven millions of people8 ,the shades of ,hahnemann himself might echo the question4 ,t4 ,n4 ,,chase1 in ,new ,york ,independent4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,things ,,to ,,be ,,remembered--,,no #c4 ,the ,danger6 ,whatever of sentiment or of poetry may have appealed to the imagination in the work of foreign missions1 has been pretty much dispelled by contact with foreign races at our own doors4 ,we find that they are intensely human1 and that the task of saving them is intensely real4 ,the enchantment which comes of distance is simple commonplace and matter of fact when the object is near at hand4 ,hence the danger1 now to be apprehended1 is that of disgust1 or of indifference4 ,indeed we are not sure that the feeling has not taken on a stronger form1 and might not now be called hatred1 or scorn4 ,if it be not one of these1 what name shall we give to the feeling towards the ,chinese on the ,pacific2 towards the ,indian1 driven from his hunting grounds and chased to the death by our soldiery2 towards the ,negro1 whipped and shot by midnight raiders1 unprotected by the government he helped to save1 and left in his ignorance1 his poverty and his animalism by ,god's people1 on whom he is cast for enlightenment and elevation8 ,how shall we see the vastness and urgency of the work for these races with such repugnances and disgusts meeting us on the very threshold8 ,moral ideas are of slow growth1 and churches and communities turn to new objects of sympathy and labor reluctantly and sluggishly4 ,while we hesitate and wait1 the probability is that things will take shape and pass beyond our control2 or1 at best1 that we shall but partially secure results which are now fully within our reach4 ,at this moment the churches of ,america hold the key to the conquest of this world for ,jesus ,christ6 ,will they hold it a generation hence8 ,not unless they take advantage of their position to win these races to ,god before they are absorbed into the world1 and are thus lost as a regenerating force with which to elevate the unsaved millions of mankind4 ,suppose1 in our supineness1 we see the ,chinese driven back into heathenism2 the ,indian turned over to the soldiery for extermination1 or a deeper barbarism2 the ,negro wrested from his rights1 and unlifted from his passions1 weaknesses and enthralments of mental and spiritual darkness3 is there any reason to believe that the opportunity will ever return when it will be possible for us so completely to control1 guide and mould them as we now can8 ,we are in jeopardy1 therefore1 of making the most fearful mistake in ,christian ethics and in ,christian practice4 ,if these races pass from our hands uneducated and unsaved1 the world will charge us with the commission of a crime against humanity itself4 ,now we can throw upon these fields1 if we will1 men enough to take possession of them in the name of ,christ4 ,now1 we can raise up out of these races the laborers to carry our learning1 our art1 our faith1 to all who speak the same tongue1 and to all in whose veins bounds the same blood4 ,to this work ,providence manifestly calls us--to do it is to walk with ,god1 we verily believe4 ,but whether the churches see it1 or wish to see it2 whether they are more ready to walk in their own light than in the light which shines from heaven1 ,i cannot answer4 ,i can only say the sun shines1 and we have the eyes to see4 ,if we miss the ,divine plan and method it will not be for lack of light1 but the preparatory studies1 he pursued theology under the same friend who had led him to ,christ4 ,he was diligent1 growingly diligent2 in his studies strong1 active and persevering4 ,he had a voice of remarkable compass and power1 and he composed both the words and music of the ,class ,song sung at his graduation4 ,he was devoted to the ministry1 for which he had made years of laborious preparation1 and which he had begun with large promise of usefulness4 ,his illness continued but a few days1 and death was not expected till the end had almost come4 ,but his faith was strong4 ,with exultant prayer and triumph he crossed the stream into the better land4 ,but it seems as if the fields this side1 so large and needy1 could ill spare such a young and vigorous reaper2 and a heavy the ,apostle ,paul for you4 ,in finishing the course here you have only made a beginning4 ,the real work and the prize are ahead4 ,a foundation has been laid on which you must build1 patiently1 carefully1 wisely4 ,healthy spiritual and intellectual life are characterized by progress4 ,this is the touchstone1 like a shining light1 shining more and more unto the perfect day4 ,education is the full development of the man1 and we know that development is a gradual1 almost imperceptible process4 ,it is the leading out of the powers and capabilities which he may possess4 ,you do not educate a man when you simply tell him what he did not know1 but you do educate him when you make this knowledge imparted a part of himself1 thus causing him to feel what he ought to feel--conscious power and ,texas4 8,last ,sabbath10 writes the faithful pastor1 8was a high day for the church here4 ,thirteen united with us1 and many others were greatly revived4 ,meetings of intense interest are still being held1 and many are coming forward for prayers and consecrating themselves to the ,lord40 ,a revival in midsummer6 ,what a surprising phenomenon in religious work at the ,north1 but not so surprising for the ,south1 for there most earnest ,christian work is often done during the heated days of summer4 ,the pastor who reports this encouraging work has charge of three churches1 and travels every week some fifty miles by wagon in order to fill his appointments4 ,he regrets his inability to visit all the stations in his field regularly at present1 on account of the great interest at this one point and the imperative demands there are upon him for special services here4 ,he begs the prayers of his brethren to whom he writes1 and may ,i not ask1 through these ,notes1 for the prayers of a much larger circle than those reached by his letter8 99 99 99 99 99 ,these ,notes seem to be a scrap-bag1 or a sort of patch-work quilt1 made up of bits gathered from different letters4 ,let me add graduates from the ,normal and ,theological departments4 ,it was a large bill of fare1 we thought well served1 and many were at the table4 ,the attendance all through was excellent1 the house being usually crowded1 and often the overflow was very great4 ,the different examinations1 it was conceded by all1 gave evidence of thorough study and solid attainments4 ,certainly thoroughness is constantly sought1 and those who visit the college bear witness to good success in securing it4 ,two1 new this year1 graduated from the ,theological and thirteen from the ,normal department4 ,all are professed ,christians1 are exemplary in life1 and go to their work with excellent preparation4 ,tuesday afternoon was given to inspection of the industrial training4 ,a display was made of the girls' work in cutting1 sewing and repairing2 of what the young men had done in blacksmithing1 carpentry and cabinet-making2 while samples of cobbling were walking all around4 ,students were seen painting1 wood-working1 draughting2 some were type-setting1 form-making1 and at press-work4 ,the garden1 farm1 wood-saw and feed-mill1 stock and barns were examined4 ,all our visitors are impressed with the results already secured in industrial training1 and some are relieved who feared that the brain1 if it gets much of a start1 will paralyze the hand1 forgetting that the hand must be inapt till there is a trained head to give it cunning4 ,the mid-winter series of meetings1 both at the college and the two mission chapels1 were blessed to several conversions4 ,young people have been schooled in a vigorous ,society of ,christian ,endeavor4 ,mission ,sunday-schools and neighborhood prayer-meetings have been carried on with growing interest4 ,the different benevolent societies have had their claims presented in turn2 something has been given to all2 and if the offerings have been small1 they have1 it is believed1 been weighted with prayer4 ,important repairs1 so far as means are afforded1 are to be made by industrial students4 ,board is now to be made cheaper1 and1 with1 no less attention to fundamental branches1 more is to be done in developing college studies2 and theological training1 a strong point from the beginning1 is still to be kept in the foreground4 ,at the close of another good year1 the college looks hopefully towards the future4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,commencement ,,at ,,tougaloo ,,university4 ,whatever else we may have or fail to have at our annual ,commencement time1 we always expect rain1 and we are rarely disappointed in this particular4 ,this year rain was so greatly needed1 and had been so long devoutly wished for1 that it was one of our causes of rejoicing4 ,however1 the showery character of the weather prevented our having the usual full attendance on ,commencement ,sabbath2 but by ,commencement day we had many visitors from a distance1 who1 with our school family and people from our own vicinity1 filled all the space of our new chapel--not quite so closely as it might have been packed1 but comfortably full2 the largest attendance being had at the concert1 ,wednesday evening1 ,june #a4 ,these concerts grow in excellence and in favor from year to year1 and our choir has1 besides1 won some modest laurels1 singing outside the ,university1 which it has worn as modestly4 ,our ,sunday-school is always delightful1 and nothing else is ever permitted to take its place4 ,at the close of this year we had the pleasure of disposing of seventy dollars of ,sunday-school money4 ,forty dollars were voted to missionary work in ,africa1 twenty-five to library books1 and five to the ,state temperance lecturer of ,mississippi4 ,a larger average attendance than ever before was reported4 ,on ,sunday afternoon a ,home ,mission ,institute was held4 ,a list of topics was presented two weeks beforehand1 but no set speeches or prepared papers were given4 ,the young people1 led by ,president ,pope1 did nearly all the talking1 and it was good to hear the earnest and practical way in which they discussed such topics as these3 8,what can we do-- 8,to secure the better observance of the ,sabbath80 8,to introduce good reading matter into the homes of the people80 8,to make our industrial training do home missionary work80 8,by what means can we best promote the interest of the people in schools1 ,sunday-schools1 missions1 temperance1 personal and social purity80 8,what societies shall we seek to organize1 or shall we combine all these aims in ,societies of ,christian ,endeavor80 ,in the evening ,president ,pope delivered the sermon to the graduates1 speaking with even more than his wonted force and fervor in view of his farewell to this field and the transfer of his labor to the mountain work in ,tennessee4 ,besides the oral examinations of ,monday1 ,tuesday and ,wednesday1 there were black-board drawings and displays of written work in each room1 so that those who passed through might see something of the work of each grade4 ,there were also industrial exhibits of the young ladies' work1 and work from the shops4 ,col4 ,power1 of the ,state ,board of ,visitors1 spoke of our new school-house and shops themselves as being a most gratifying industrial exhibit1 having been so largely the work of our apprentices4 ,on ,wednesday afternoon the black-boards in one of the large school-rooms were seen to bear these scrolls1 in dashing capitals3 8,welcome1 ,alumni60 and 8,there's no place like ,home40 ,and presently about a score of ,tougaloo graduates1 with teachers and friends1 were gathered to listen to an address by ,mr4 ,j4 ,n4 ,granberry1 one of the very first class graduated here4 ,he said1 in beginning1 that he had decided to take for his theme 8,that which most men try to shirk1 namely3 #8,duty4'0 ,he then spoke of the duty of the sons and daughters of this institution to themselves1 to their school1 to their people1 to their country1 to the world at large1 basing all upon the thought of duty to ,god4 ,at a business meeting1 next morning1 of the ,society of the ,alumni1 ,president ,pope pledged funds with which to erect1 within two years1 an ,industrial ,cottage for ,girls1 and the ,alumni pledged funds for the furnishing4 ,this is with a view to placing our girls' industries more nearly on an equal footing with those for young men4 ,in the meantime our good friend1 ,mr4 ,ballard1 of ,new ,york1 has again come to our rescue and made it possible to set the enterprise of girls' housekeeping on foot at once--that is1 next year--in a small way1 as we can with our present accommodations4 ,an unusual number of graduates were present at ,commencement1 and enjoyed their own separate dinner and 8the olive branches0 about the table4 ,there were never so many babies at ,tougaloo before1 and a well-behaved and promising little company we thought them1 upon the whole4 ,may ,god bless the little ones and make them every one burning and shining lights in ,his kingdom6 ,our graduating class was small this year--two young ladies from the ,elementary1 and a young man from the ,higher ,normal4 ,the exercises were good4 ,we have always listened with pleasure and profit1 each recurring year1 to our annual address1 by whomsoever delivered1 and faithful and eminent men have thus favored us2 but never have we experienced greater delight in this part of our service than this year while being addressed by that grand1 large-hearted1 eloquent divine and stanch friend of the colored people from ante-bellum days1 the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,c4 ,k4 ,marshall1 of ,vicksburg4 ,he seemed not at all to address himself to colored people as such1 but from a glowing heart to pour forth universal truth for universal humanity1 in the most genial spirit1 counseling our young people as young people anywhere might rejoice to be counseled on the threshold of active life4 ,after so prolonged a 8feast of reason10 the mortal bodies demanded refreshment1 and the afternoon was far spent when all had been served4 ,then good-byes were spoken1 students and visitors departed1 and a sort of lonesome quiet settled over ,tougaloo2 but the chosen motto of our graduating class looks down in letters of unfading green from over the rostrum1 8,life is earnest10 and carries our prayerful thoughts out to the army of young workers who1 in their several homes1 schools and places of labor1 we trust are earnestly endeavoring to walk in the footsteps of our blessed ,master and 8overcome evil with good40 ,j4 ,k4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,gregory ,,institute1 ,,wilmington1 ,n4,c4 ,our closing exercises this year partook more of the nature of a ,commencement than heretofore4 ,this is the second year only that our school has turned out graduates from any of the higher courses4 ,from the class of ten comprising the elementary normal class1 seven--five young men and two young women--were graduated4 ,one other young man1 who failed to pass on account of being absent teaching during a part of the year1 and who is working hard1 determined to make up the lost studies before leaving the city1 will probably succeed and be granted his certificate during the summer4 ,the exercises were held on ,thursday evening1 ,may #bgth1 in the church instead of in the hall1 in order to get a larger room4 ,it was needed1 the largest number being present that were ever assembled within the walls of this beautiful building4 ,the exercises consisted principally of orations and essays by the members of the graduating class1 interspersed with singing1 all of which were rendered in a highly creditable manner4 ,in addition to these were recitations by the school of the #bc;d ,psalm1 a ,scripture catechism learned during the year1 and a missionary colloquy beautifully rendered by girls from the different classes1 representing1 by their dress1 many of the heathen nations4 ,another and a very interesting feature of the evening's entertainment1 was a half-hour address by ,rev4 ,geo4 ,s4 ,smith1 pastor of the ,congregational ,church1 ,raleigh1 ,n4,c4 ,he was introduced to the audience as a colored man who had been trained in the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools1 and a noble specimen he is1 as an orator1 as a scholar1 and as a man4 ,he chose for his subject1 8,encouragement10 from which he delivered an address replete with sound practical thoughts and advice4 ,a better behaved1 more attentive audience scarcely ever gathered than that at our ,commencement4 ,we feared that they might not like these exercises as well as those of the usual exhibition order1 but many said this was the best exhibition we ever had4 ,everything passed off nicely1 with nothing to mar the enjoyment of the evening4 ,as we looked at the people before us1 we thought3 8,how could any one in this ,christian land have ever said1 #8,these niggers have no souls'2 or1 #8,you can't educate a nigger to make anything of him'80 ,even at this late day we hear these or kindred expressions4 ,i tell you1 friends1 if you were thrown with this people as we teachers are1 you would soon almost forget that they are colored4 ,please don't forget that they are here to stay1 #g1jjj1jjj of them1 and they need your help to rise from their despised1 neglected condition4 ,they are surely marching onward1 but much1 very much1 yet remains for the ,christians of our land to do4 ,our enrollment for the past year has been #bhe1 but the average attendance has not been quite up to the usual mark1 owing to sickness1 8hard times10 etc4 ,death has entered the school1 taking away two of the number1 both youths of special promise4 ,our workers have never been more untiring in their efforts to advance the cause of temperance and morality4 ,a flourishing ,band of ,hope1 taking in nearly every pupil in the three lower departments1 has been doing its good work throughout the year4 ,the society for the older ones1 not strictly confined to the school1 has also been doing its work4 ,white ,cross societies have been formed1 and without doubt will prove of great help to their members4 ,the ,band of ,mercy belonging to the ,first ,primary ,division should not be forgotten4 ,the school prayer-meeting has been encouraging1 and considerable time has been taken up in the study of the ,scriptures4 ,,geo4 ,a4 ,,woodard4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,closing ,,exercises ,,at ,,santee ,,normal ,,training ,,school4 ,a beautiful feature of the ,commencement season here at ,santee was the communion service of last ,sunday1 at which time six young ,indian men came forward from among their companions and publicly united themselves to ,god's people6 ,we call them boys1 but they are not boys2 they are old enough to realize the position they now occupy1 and it has come to them only after the long1 hard struggle which seems always to insure earnest lives for the future4 ,most beautiful of all was the baptism6 ,tears rolled down their cheeks as they bent for a blessing from the white man's ,god and their ,god4 ,the eyes of the teachers1 who had prayed and labored so earnestly for this very occasion1 were filled to overflowing4 ,five different tribes were represented by these boys3 ,mandan1 ,ree1 ,assinaboine1 ,yanktonais and ,titon4 ,two of the young men are the sons of chiefs still in their blankets1 who1 recognizing the great needs of their people1 are urging their sons on to more earnest study1 so that they may come back as missionaries to those who wait for them as for deliverers4 ,it would seem enough of an achievement that these scores of ,indian boys and girls have been brought out of the superstition1 the unbelief1 the savagery of their tribes1 into the customs1 manners and religion of civilization1 even if the work stopped there2 but the three days following the communion ,sabbath have shown such results in regard to a growth as well as change of mind1 that to one seeing the work for the first time it is simply marvelous4 ,it is one thing to sit in an ,eastern audience and listen to the most earnest recital of the needs of1 and work among1 the ,indians1 and to say1 8,o1 yes1 the needs are very great2 the work is glorious2 we fully understand your solution of the #8,indian problem'2 we agree with you and aid you60 7while in a day the needs are forgotten1 and the work is overlooked74 ,it is another thing to stand here on the ground and listen to the silent appeals of these hundreds of thirsty human souls--appeals that are all the stronger because of their utter helplessness4 ,another thing is it to stand and behold the work already done1 and the change already made6 ,to see with our own eyes is to wonder and believe1 in such a way that we can never forget4 ,would that all men might not only hear1 but see6 ,on ,friday1 the #bdth1 began the yearly examinations of the ,santee ,normal ,training ,school4 ,teachers and scholars were alive to the duties placed upon them1 and the end of the seventeenth year found all active as ever4 ,the recitations extended throughout ,friday1 ,monday and ,tuesday1 and visitors from the ,agency and surrounding towns were made welcome4 ,the school-rooms1 thrown open together1 were well filled during most of the sessions4 ,especially interesting was the map-drawing and accompanying recitation by the older geography students4 ,the recitation showed that an ,indian may have as clear and correct an idea of the formation of this earth and its divisions into hemispheres1 countries1 etc41 as any white boy4 ,the maps were accurately and admirably drawn4 ,the language lessons were novel1 and showed good work on the part of the teachers4 ,stories were read to the students which they were asked to re-write in as good ,english as possible4 ,the following from a boy brought into the school last fall1 is a good illustration of the way in which they think and speak in ,english3 8,we get all our silk from a little creature called worm4 ,the little creature is green color4 ,she lay number of eggs and then died1 and they have never seen their children and father40 ,music is by no means drudgery to the ,indians4 ,passionately fond of it1 they practice with patience1 and the results have been more than satisfactory4 ,considering the lack of all discipline in their natures1 the examinations this year1 both in vocal and instrumental music1 have been remarkable4 ,those thousands in the ,east who heard1 last winter1 the singing of the ,santee quintette1 can easily believe that this is true4 ,gymnastics have been practiced as a means of teaching accuracy and quickness of thought4 ,the precision acquired by the students shows that it has been a good discipline1 and would do credit to any school4 ,the recitations in mathematics were good4 ,the work in algebra deserves special mention4 ,one thing is very evident in studying the school work here2 that is1 that while in everything requiring simple memory the ,indian is fully equal to the white boy1 perhaps more than equal1 his reasoning faculties are much behind1 on account of the lack of such faculties in the generations of his ancestors2 so mathematical work requires patient plodding1 month after month1 for each step gained4 ,there is very great need of such discipline among this people1 and it is one of the most difficult things in this work of education and ,christianization4 ,twenty minutes were given on ,monday to the
