is the opinion of many good ,christians1 that the call of the ,jews will be in this age1 and that too very suddenly2 and that it is very probable1 from a numerous train of deductions1 that in this very year1 #agej1 we may expect some more than ordinary appearances and motions in most parts of the world1 especially in the ,northern and ,eastern parts thereof1 tending to the overthrow and destruction of ,antichrist4 8,tidings out of the ,east and out of the ,north shall trouble him1 7says ,daniel1 chap1 xi47 yet he shall come to his end1 and none shall help him40 ,that the time of the ,jews' restoration and commencement of the ,millennium is near at hand1 is certain2 whether so near as the time above mentioned1 is as yet uncertain4 ,but this uncertainty arises from the many historical1 and chronological difficulties to be found among historians2 some authors making the time of the same event sooner1 others later4 ,archbishop ,usher1 and other chronologers since his time1 place the birth of ,,christ just four thousand years from the creation4--,scaliger1 ,petavius1 and some others1 not so much2 but the ,septuagint and ,josephus much more2 the like difference in accounts is to be found amongst them in many other historical facts4 ,there is a tradition among the ,jews1 that the world shall continue six thousand years2 7viz47 two thousand years void1 two thousand years under the law1 and two thousand years under the ,,messias2 and at the end of this six thousand years will commence the ,millennium1 or one thousand years of rest for the people of ,,god1 and particularly for his chosen people the ,jews4--,lactantius says wherefore1--because all the works of ,god were completed in six days1 it is necessary that the world continue in this state six thousand years2 which six thousand years1 ,cyprian says1 are already almost complete since the devil attacked mankind4 ,mr4 ,whiston observes1 that this notion of a ,millennium is universal2 and it is derived from the earliest tradition1 both among the old heathen ,philosophers1 the ancient ,jews1 the ,apostles1 and the primitive ,fathers of the ,church1 and is an undeniable and most important portion of ,divine ,revelation4 ,in his ,sacred ,history1 lately published1 ,vol4 ,,ii4 p4 #cdc1 he says1 that by the exactest chronology1 the first six thousand years from the creation end about ,a4,d4 #agff2 that is for certain supposed the beginning of the ,millennium1 when the ,jews will be restored to their own country1 and rebuild their temple1 upon the sounding of the ,seventh ,trumpet4 ,a trumpet is the symbol of war2 and in the ,revelations we find that all the seven trumpets were to be attended with woes and lamentations2 six of which are already past2 and the seventh1 which is yet to come1 denounceth the third and last woe4 ,under it1 the seven vials of ,,god',s wrath are to be poured out1 both upon the ,eastern and ,western ,antichrist2 that is1 the ,turk and ,pope4 ,it is said1 ,revelations1 chap4 viii4 verse #ac1 8,woe to the inhabitants of the earth1 by reason of the trumpets that are yet to sound20 and chap4 xv4 verse #h1 it is said1 8,no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled20 which intimateth that the holy city and temple cannot be prepared to receive the righteous part of mankind1 till the power of the ,turk and ,pope are both destroyed1 or that the seven vials are poured out4 ,a famous ,french author1 in his account of the non-effusion of the seven vials1 says1 the first vial poured on the earth1 intends the loss of church revenues1 and so falls upon the worldly interest of ,antichristian men2 the second vial1 poured upon the sea1 which he says is the ,papal kingdom in its greatest extent1 which will become as the blood of a dead man2 so that every soul which liveth in it shall die2 for as fish cannot live in water turned into blood1 neither can mankind any longer endure the yoke of ,popish ,priests and ,governors2 the third vial1 which is poured on the rivers1 denotes the destruction of ,popish doctrines4 ,the fourth vial1 which is poured forth on the sun1 threateneth the ,ottoman empire and religion4 ,the fourth trumpet raised that empire1 and the fourth vial shall destroy it4 ,the fifth vial is poured out on the seat of the ,beast1 or the city of ,rome1 which predicts her destruction4 ,the angel represents the ,pope's kingdom as full of darkness1 and his subjects gnawing their tongues through despair4 ,the sixth vial is poured on the great river ,euphrates2 that is1 on the great river of the ,turks and their religion2 after which there will be nothing to hinder the princes and people of the ,east1 who shall be enlightened or converted1 or the ,jews1 who are there dispersed in great numbers1 from marching into the ,west1 to help on the destruction of the ,beast4 ,the seventh and last vial is poured into the air1 and denotes the clearing of all places from the fog and superstition1 and ,antichristianism1 after which will be manifest the mystery of ,god in reuniting all nations1 and the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of righteousness4 ,i have already observed that the precise time when all these mighty revolutions will happen is doubtful2 however1 there is no doubt but we are arrived near to the time of their manifestation1 and when the scene of affairs1 both in ,asia and ,europe1 will be very much changed3 of this we are assured from computation of ,scripture ,prophecy1 and the concurrent testimonies of the ,sybils and other heathen oracles1 the signs whereby you may know when will be the end of all these things that shall happen on the earth2 7viz47 when 7the likeness of7 swords shall be seen in the heavens towards sun-rising or sun-setting2 and the prophet ,joel says 7chap4 ii4 verse #cj17 8,the ,,lord will shew wonders in the heavens1 blood1 and fire1 and pillars of smoke40 ,every body knows that upon the first appearance of the ,northern ,lights1 #g they were by all sorts of people compared to swords1 lances1 and other military weapons1 or else to blood1 fire1 and pillars of smoke1 in the very expressions of the prophet ,joel2 and indeed they do greatly resemble all these things2 and in fact are fires and pillars of smoke1 or vapour1 which do frequently in their colour represent blood1 and by their form and motion1 swords1 lances1 and other military ensigns2 but these appearances1 7as also ,comets7 you will say1 may be accounted for1 from natural causes--,allowed1 they may so2 yet as their appearances are so universal1 and uncommon 7except of late years7 and are exactly such as we see were to happen some short time before the commencement of these extraordinary revolutions1 preparatory to the ,millennium1 we may and ought to look upon them as ominous1 and sent in a peculiar and wonderful manner1 to presage the approach of those wonderful and tremendous times4 ,let us then not be ignorant of the signs of the times1 but look suddenly for that great and fearful earthquake mentioned in the ,revelations2 for it will come1 and cannot be far off2 but ,i fear it is with us as with the ,jews when our ,saviour came into the world1 or with the ,christians when ,antichrist stept upon the stage4 ,christ was both come and gone before the ,jews knew that he was the ,messias2 and ,antichrist was grown old in the world before the world took any notice of him2 so it may be1 that ,antichrist is going apace to perdition1 before the people of ,god begin to discern it4 ,there seems to be such a concurrence of causes and predictions centring in this time1 that it looks very much like the approach of those days before spoken of1 out of divine writ4 ,to those before mentioned1 ,i will add part of a prophecy1 as it is given us by the author of the ,turkish ,spy1 who says that he met with a person at ,astracan1 called the ,travelling ,jew1 who positively asserted in the open streets1 that after the year #agjj1 the ,turks shall overflow ,christendom like a mighty torrent1 when there will be a great desolation in ,hungary1 ,germany1 ,france1 and other regions in the ,west2 but above all others1 ,italy will be made a perfect wilderness2 that ,england shall become the refuge of all that escape the calamities overwhelming the adjacent countries2 and there 7he says7 they will be shewn a new pattern of the ,law of ,,jesus1 or rather the old and true one1 freed from the corruptions and errors which have been superinduced for many ages1 when the ,jews will be convinced of their infidelity1 and chase away darkness and superstition from the earth4 ,in those days 7says this ,jew7 foreign princes shall send their ambassadors to the king of ,great ,britain for holy and pious teachers to instruct them4 ,mighty armies shall be raised in the ,north1 which shall be joined by a prodigious army1 collected in other parts of ,christendom1 which shall drive out the ,turks1 recover from them the ,holy ,land1 and gloriously rebuild the city of ,jerusalem1 and make a worthy and excellent ,englishman ,patriarch of the same4 ,then shall the eyes of us ,jews 7says he7 be opened2 and we shall all acknowledge ,,jesus to be the true ,,messias4 ,,moore in his observations says1 that these times look something like a preparation for the destruction of ,antichrist4 ,we know his destiny is near at hand2 and it is with good reason expected1 that great advances will be made towards that good work this very year 7viz47 #agej4 ,the ,turks have a traditionary prophecy among them which says that they are at last to be destroyed by a ,northern nation1 which have a white and yellow hair4 ,the pious ,archbishop ,usher was of opinion1 that the last persecution would fall upon all the ,protestant churches in ,europe1 but with this difference3 in the former1 the most eminent ,ministers and ,christians did generally suffer2 but in this last persecution1 these shall be preserved by ,god2 which shall immediately follow as soon as the storm is over1 which shall take away the hypocrites and formal professors of ,christianity4 ,,state ,,of ,,the ,,world ,,in #agib4 ,perfidious ,mars long plighted leagues divides1 ,and o'er the wasted world in triumph rides2 ,the peaceful peasants to the war are prest1 ,the fields lie fallow in inglorious rest1 ,the plain no pasture to the flock affords1 ,the crooked scythes are straighten'd into swords2 ,now impious arms from ev'ry part resound1 ,and1 like a deluge1 cover all the ground4 ,the time does not yet appear arrived when the nations of the world shall learn war no more1 nor beat their swords into plowshares1 nor their spears into pruning hooks4 8,how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity60 was the observation of the ,psalmist of old4 ,and the command of the great ,lawgiver is1 8,hear1 ,o ,israel2 the ,lord thy ,god is one ,lord30 and 8,thou shalt love the ,lord with all thy heart1 and with all thy strength1 and with all thy mind1 and with all thy soul2 and the second is like unto this3 thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself40 ,was this practical truth observed more1 we should then soon see what most people are so earnestly desiring2 namely1 better times2 the world would soon bear another aspect1 and all would be harmony and peace4 ,the ,almighty ,god of all principalities and powers1 by his infinite wisdom and all-seeing providence1 hath intended and proposed1 and by these his glorious and powerful instruments1 declares and presignifies such notable events and transactions1 such unexpected commotions and various mutations to happen to many of the principal kingdoms and nations in the world2 for the affairs thereof seem to be in a hurry and confusion1 and to be acted by such a ferment as is not usual2 their passions and fury rise higher2 and the ill success of the advocates of power and tyranny is an encouragement to the friends of liberty1 both civil and religious1 to go on4 ,in the ,eastern part of the world1 a nation or country is near being swallowed up more fatally than ,jonas in the whale's belly4 ,the ,turks are eminently pointed at by these celestial messengers4 ,war and desolation has already invaded their territories4 ,the ,ottoman empire must be weakened1 and ,antichrist must be destroyed2 ,france and ,italy1 more especially ,lorrain and ,naples1 will meet with new troubles4 ,new troubles and misfortunes arise in the ,north4 ,the ,king of ,p-- will suffer by sickness1 or some other calamity2 but however he will gain some military honours and advantages this year4 ,a great ,general stoops to fate4 ,death alone convinces us1 that all men are vanity4 ,some losses or misfortunes seem to threaten ,portugal2 and ,spain is not past the vortex of ill fortune4 ,one loss comes upon the back of another1 which at last brings her to reason1 and will pave the way to liberty4 ,here now follows one of ,michael ,nostrodamus's ,prophecies1 which is now fulfilling1 or near these times4 ,on the left hand over against ,vitry1 ,the three ,red ones of ,france ,germany state1 that great sensations have been excited among various classes of the inhabitants of ,germany by several preachers having held forth to their congregations that the approach of the time of the ,millennium had arrived1 and this doctrine has been illustrated from the departure of a great number of ,jewish families from different parts of ,germany on their way to the ,holy ,land4 ,the following letter from ,mr4 ,niety1 a merchant in ,riga1 has been published1 on this subject3-- 8,my son was last summer in the ,crimea1 and returning towards the end of autumn by way of ,odessa1 he heard a report that many ,jewish families emigrated through that town4 ,during his journey through ,poland1 he met himself many travelling ,jews4 ,when he afterwards lodged in a town inhabited by ,jews1 and met there with a ,german ,jew1 he entered into conversation with him1 and asked him1 to what country the emigrating ,jewish families went4 ,he replied1 to ,palestine1 to settle in the country of their ,fathers1 having a presentiment that the ,messiah would now soon come4 ,the rich of the nation1 scattered in different parts of the world made collections for the journey expences of the poor4--,this account of my son excited my attention4 ,i wrote to one of our friends at ,wilna1 as ,poland is the chief seat of this people1 and asked him concerning these movements1 and the probable causes of them1 to which ,i received1 within these few days1 the following answer3 8#8,i have also received interesting accounts concerning the ,jews4 ,there is among them a general desire to return to the land of their ,fathers4 ,many of them are probably impelled by need1 as there is a stagnation of all trade here3 but many are moved by the expectation of the coming of the ,messiah in about eight years4 ,the same persons1 from whom ,i accidentally heard this1 told me1 on another occasion1 that fifteen years hence probably no ,jew would be left in this country4 ,in the present times of confusion this memorable people1 scattered in all the world1 is little noticed2 but if the above information is confirmed in process of time1 and more generally1 that impulse among them is certainly one of the remarkable signs of the times4'--,thus far from this letter4 8,this intelligence excited my attention2 and as ,i undertook another journey to the ,german colonies in ,poland1 in the months of ,may and ,june of #ahaa1 ,i resolved to ascertain the foundation of these facts4 ,in two towns which are inhabited by many ,jews1 ,i received from their leaders the following account3 ,that it was certainly true1 that for two years1 some hundreds of ,jewish families had emigrated from ,poland into ,palestine4 ,enquiring into the purpose of their emigration1 ,i was answered1 that they hoped the promises of the ,prophets would now soon be accomplished1 that the ,lord would gather the people of ,israel1 from all parts of the earth1 where they were scattered1 into the lands of their ,fathers1 and that they would there wait for the appearance of the ,messiah2 for after their ,rabbies had often been mistaken in fixing the time of his coming1 they now were persuaded that he would come at length4 ,when ,i replied that they might again be mistaken1 they said--,no matter2 if those who now go to ,palestine should not live to see the coming of the ,messiah1 they1 however1 are gathered in the ,holy ,land with their ,fathers1 and whenever the ,messiah comes1 they will be raised from their graves4 ,the places from whence these emigrations are most frequent1 they said to be ,brody in ,volhinia1 and ,wilna in ,lithuania4 ,though ,i was led to many observations by this statement1 yet the proper aim of my journey did not permit me to pursue the subject40 99 99 99 99 99
