behind this telegram is far sadder4 ,it is absurd to talk of these youth as lapsing4 ,indian education is not to be judged by the conduct of those who have been in school from less than one year up to settled on #afj acres2 every unmarried person over eighteen years of age1 and every orphan1 shall have #hj acres2 and every single person under eighteen born before the ,president issues the order making allotments1 #dj acres4 ,the allotments so made are to be inalienable for #be years1 and the lands remaining over are to be bought of the ,indians by the ,government and opened to homestead settlement only2 such homesteads in tracts of #afj acres to be inalienable also for five years4 ,when the allotments have been made1 all the ,indians are declared to be citizens of the ,united ,states1 entitled to all the rights1 privileges and immunities of such citizens4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,john ,,brown ,,song4 ,the claim has been made that the melody of the ,john ,brown song was the product of the colored people4 ,our readers will see from the following article1 which we take great pleasure in publishing1 that ,mr4 ,frank ,e4 ,jerome1 of ,russell1 ,kansas1 is the author of this famous war song4 ,he has written the article1 at our request1 for the ,,missionary1 and in a private letter he says that at the time he composed the song he was only thirteen years of age4 ,,ed4 ,on the first day of ,february1 #ahfa1 ,i arrived in ,leavenworth1 ,kansas1 from ,st4 ,louis1 ,mo41 and took an engagement in a theatre there4 ,leavenworth at that time was under the greatest excitement4 ,all sorts of rumors of war were coming in1 and the soldiers seemed to be concentrating from all sides4 ,bonfires and stump speeches were the nightly occurrences1 and stirred up the patriotism of the people to fever heat4 ,as a boy1 ,i naturally fell into the excitement1 and every chance ,i had ,i would attend these public meetings4 ,at one of them ,i heard an impassioned orator thunder out3 8,for ,freedom and ,right will surely win the day60 ,this sentence remained with me4 ,i pondered over it1 and finally got to singing it in different ways in several songs4 ,some time after1 ,i heard a prominent citizen say that 8,john ,brown was dead1 but the rebels would find that his soul would roll on and crush them60 ,before either of these occurrences1 ,i heard a number of soldiers on a ,south-bound steamer singing1 as they swept by3 8,go tell ,aunt ,susey6 ,go tell ,aunt ,susey6 ,go tell ,aunt ,susey old ,john ,brown is dead60 7,etc47 ,this tune ,i had picked up and learned ,davis1 and during the march southward they build a camp fire1 and while the bean soup is boiling the sentinel sings a song1 and the rest of the 8soldiers0 on the stage join in the chorus4 ,i was the sentinel1 and gave the song at this time4 ,a company of soldiers was present in the audience1 and ,i was quite startled at the reception my song received4 ,they hurrahed1 yelled1 laughed1 stamped1 and called me out time and again1 until the proprietor of the theatre interposed and quieted the excitement4 ,but that night1 every time ,i appeared on the stage another storm of applause would greet me4 ,after the show was over1 the soldiers cheered and went out singing 8,john ,brown's ,body0 in all sorts of ways1 and for several days after ,i heard it on the street in many different ways4 ,the tune has always remained as ,i first composed it1 but the soldiers changed the words to suit their own convenience and ideas4 ,the song as ,i sang it was as follows3 ,john ,brown's body lies slumbering in short time after this a little newsboy stopped me and told me that he had made up a new verse for my song2 and upon asking him to sing it1 he sang3 8,we'll hang ,jeff4 ,davis on a sour apple-tree60 repeating the same line three times4 ,i laughed1 and told him ,i would think it over4 ,in the theatre when ,i gave the song was a ,frenchman named ,c4 ,francois1 well known to the early settlers of ,leavenworth1 who was the leader of a glee club1 composed of the actors1 who sang nicely many national airs and ballads4 ,mr4 ,francois1 about the time ,i sang the song1 went to ,new ,york1 and1 ,i ,south and ,north can unite under the glorious banner of ,liberty in preserving the name and love for him who freely gave his life for their liberty and freedom4 ,i have heard severe criticism on the part of ,southerners regarding the illustrious dead1 but ,i often remember the olden story1 in the ,holy ,book1 of similar criticism made by the enemies of ,christ1 and ,i also read that 8,greater love hath no man than this1 that a man lay down his life for his friends40 ,so1 in our homes1 in our workshops1 in the fields1 in the churches and schools1 through the pages of history1 and within our own hearts1 we will never forget the boys in blue who saved the ,union1 and the glorious hero who laid down his life willingly and freely1 that the curse of slavery should be forever extinguished from the bright1 fair pages of our history4 ,and while we strew bright flowers over the graves of the departed heroes1 we shall always remember1 with swelling heart and deep affection1 the great work ,k4 ,alden1 ,d4,d41 ,hon4 ,wm4 ,h4 ,collins1 and ,rev4 ,jos4 ,e4 ,roy4 ,at the former visit of this body1 the ,jubilee ,singers were present to voice the gratitude of the emancipated race4 ,the colored troops1 after their muster-out1 gave for the monument more than #ej1jjj1 one-fourth of the whole4 ,the scroll held in the left hand of the bronze statue of ,mr4 ,lincoln bears on it1 in large letters1 the word 8,emancipation10 and the pen in his right hand indicates the signing of that talismanic instrument1 while the coat-of-arms1 set into the pedestal1 represents the eagle as holding in his beak the broken chain of slaves4 ,of the #agh1jjj colored soldiers1 #hj1jjj had1 with their great ,liberator1 laid down their lives for the life of the nation4 ,and so it seemed well that one who was identified with the work of supplementing that edict of freedom should stand there to recount their deeds of valor and to relate with what enthusiasm they celebrate all over the ,south not only ,emancipation ,day and the ,fourth of ,july1 but ,decoration ,day itself4 ,who in that ,southland shall be found to offer psalms and prayers1 and scatter flowers over the graves of the #cba1cfi soldiers buried in the eighty-two national cemeteries there8 ,as ,god would have it1 the people are found there1 numbered by millions1 who delight to render this service of gratitude and of love--a people whose patriotism has never been tarnished with a breath of disloyalty4 ,what shall be done for a people who have been so true to the nation8 ,let them be confirmed in all the rights and emoluments of our ,christian citizenship4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,things ,,to ,,be ,,remembered--,,no4 #b4 ,the ,want3 ,nothing so nearly concerns the welfare of this land1 and of all lands1 as the thorough merging and assimilating of all the races here into one ,christian commonwealth4 ,this is needed for the unity and strength of our own nation1 and for an example and influence upon the nations abroad4 ,the despised races1 in particular1 need to be thus fused and absorbed1 in order that they may be inoculated and empowered with the spirit of the ,republic to carry its freedom1 its learning and light1 to the lands in darkness4 ,they are part and parcel of our people1 fused or not1 and the character of the nation will be affected by their presence and influence4 ,the measure with which we mete to them shall be measured to us again4 ,we are in a partnership which involves common gains and common losses4 ,what we put into them of intelligence1 piety and moral power1 we put into the nation not only1 but we put into the mightiest of the unbaptized races of men4 ,we have little conception1 indeed1 of the immense inertia of the heathen races2 or how much sympathy1 money and labor1 will be needed to move them into new lines of thought1 or of moral action4 ,but it is a work to which we are specially called1 and for which we have special facilities4 ,it may tax all our patience and charity1 and then we shall barely touch the necessities of the case4 ,the churches1 the school-houses1 the intelligence and the character that will be needed for the uplift of these races1 we have only begun to supply4 ,indeed it is a question as to whether we have yet formed any adequate idea of a work1 as for races1 in distinction from a work which deals merely with individuals4 ,but if we could bear in mind1 in dealing with the ,chinaman1 the ,indian and the ,negro1 that it is the races we are after1 the turning of single souls to ,god would not seem the small thing that it does4 ,we should then comprehend1 perhaps1 how much more favorable was a ,christian land for the conversion of men1 and for the raising up of broad1 intelligent1 and thoroughly equipped teachers and preachers for the benighted and perishing1 than were heathen lands4 ,the activities of our daily life1 the forces of our liberty1 learning1 piety1 government1 must do immensely more for a man in ,america than the feeble pulses of gospel life and light can do for him in ,china and ,africa4 ,how much easier1 then1 the conversion of heathen under the blaze of our ,christian sky1 and how much stronger and better men can we make of them to undertake the salvation of their own lands6 ,the great want is the means--both men and money--to throw upon the ,pacific slopes1 upon the ,indian reservations1 the ,southern savannas1 a ,christian force large enough to put these races under thorough ,christian culture4 ,anything less than this will fail of the end4 ,it is an opportunity to lay hold of the unsaved races1 such as is likely never to come again2 which it would not only be unwise to neglect1 but deeply criminal not to improve4 ,god sets before us this open door1 and not to enter in is to peril their future as well as our own4 ,a responsibility greater than this could hardly be given to men1 and an eye to see it and a soul to feel it are what1 beyond all things1 our people need4 ,c4 rudiments of knowledge1 and a select few have received a higher training4 ,some ambition has been roused in the masses1 and a little progress has been made in supplying them with more intelligent leaders in church and in state4 ,no doubt remains that the ,negro may be rendered capable of filling all the stations in life which are occupied by white men4 ,ordinary acquirements are made with creditable ease4 ,the higher education can also be acquired by the proper proportion of students1 but this effort is only partially successful as yet4 ,poor material is too commonly offered1 not only as to native talent1 but especially as regards thorough drill in primary studies and the commencement of genuine mental discipline4 ,with an imperfect drill in the lower schools1 we can do no perfect work in the higher branches1 and we find it difficult to develop and sustain in the mind the idea of a true scholarship1 and of the lofty aims of a liberal education4 ,it is but slowly that such an intellectual atmosphere can be made to pervade the colored colleges of the ,south as is found in the white colleges of the ,new ,england ,states4 ,but the work must be pushed till such a result shall be secured4 ,progress always entails added labor and expense4 ,what has been already accomplished by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 must not be lost1 and the vantage ground must be used to gain new results4 ,when students graduate1 their places are more than occupied by others1 who have been moved by their example to seek for knowledge4 ,as the spirit of caste is overcome1 and places of honor and profit begin to open to colored men1 fully qualified persons must be ready to embrace the new opportunities4 ,every educated and earnest ,christian minister sent forth from our institutions will not only supply region to aim at higher work1 and to seek school privileges4 ,it is a frequent remark1 that the theological department of ,howard ,university has1 by direct and indirect influence1 revolutionized the preaching in the colored churches of all denominations in ,washington1 which number about eighty1 it is said4 ,thus the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is a leaven hidden in the ,southern meal1 and destined1 with similar influences1 to leaven the entire mass4 ,and this ought to be appreciated by the intelligent ,congregationalists of the ,north1 who will rejoice in two obvious results of the operations of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,one is1 the gradual increase of their own churches and educational institutions1 which are becoming respectable in number and great in influence2 the other is1 the modifying effect upon other denominations1 which are thus inspired and toned up to our standard of education1 morals and religion4 ,this is secured not only by our example and competition1 but also by the enlightening and liberalizing influence exerted upon their own men1 who1 as teachers and preachers1 have been trained in our schools4 ,these are not false to their own sects2 they labor faithfully and successfully in without removing or disturbing the patient4 ,then came an exhibit in artistic and scientific cooking1 by the ,senior ,normal class4 ,if the quality of the cooking were to be judged by the rapidity presence of the white man's civilization on this continent for upwards of three hundred years1 asking for justice1 and it has not yet been accorded him4 ,a most shameful record is the history of the white man's dealings with the ,indians1 whether read in the conduct of individuals or in the conduct of the ,government4 ,the white man1 by reason of his intelligence1 his resources and his numerical superiority1 had the ability to cheat1 rob1 and overpower the ,indian1 and putting his sense of justice out of sight1 he has proceeded to cheat and rob and overpower him4 ,between the years #aggh and #ahga1 the people of the ,united ,states have made with the ,indians #fdi treaties1 and the majority of them they have violated4 ,by these treaties nearly all of the territory of the ,united ,states has been acquired--a territory that by reason of its vastness is at present the home of #ej1jjj1jjj white men1 prospectively to become the home of at least #aej1jjj1jjj more--a territory that by reason of its marvellous resources of climate1 soil and minerals1 has produced a wealth already rivaling that of the oldest nations1 and promising in the not far distant future to surpass them all4 ,this territory has nearly all of it been deeded by the ,indians to the people of the ,united ,states1 on condition that the ,government should compensate them by money annuities in cash payment1 or their equivalent in food1 clothing1 agricultural implements1 and instruction in farming and trades2 by establishing and maintaining schools for the education of their children1 and rigidly excluding white intruders from their reservations4 ,well1 we have got the territory1 but what about the conditions8 ,the money agreed upon has not been paid2 the rations stipulated for have not been issued2 the schools promised have not been maintained1 and white intruders upon the reservations have not been excluded4 ,from pillar to post these children of the forest have been driven4 ,as fast as the white man has wanted the ,indian's land1 a reason has been speedily found for violating the treaty and consummating the robbery4 ,the savage has been goaded to go on the war path by white men's villainy1 emphasis to the faith of the ,christian church in the redeemability of the ,indian4 ,lack of faith in this truth has been the cause of much of the cruel indifference on the part of many good testimony1 when the ,indian could not have a hearing1 have led many ,christians by their opposition to ,indian missions1 unwittingly to array themselves against the gospel4 ,they did not think1 in taking up the cry1 8,there is no good ,indian but a dead ,indian10 8,the ,indian cannot be civilized10 8,the ,indian should be exterminated10 and other such falsehoods1 that they were denying the ,christian faith and practically proclaiming that there was no salvation for themselves nor for anyone else2 yet that was precisely what they were doing1 for if the ,indian cannot be redeemed1 then no one can be redeemed4 ,if the gospel cannot save the lowest1 then there is no salvation for the highest4 ,the ,indian is a man1 and ,christ tasted death for every man1 and he is able to save to the uttermost every man4 ,that lowest savage1 wretched and vile as he is1 can be redeemed1 and in this redemption can be raised to highest manhood4 ,all culture and excellence of mind and heart are attainable to him whose soul has felt the redeeming power of ,christ's salvation4 ,why1 then1 after #cjj years of the presence of ,christianity on this continent1 have not the ,indians been civilized8 does any one ask4 ,rather1 when we think of the way that the ,indians have been treated1 our surprise shall be that any of them have accepted the gospel4 ,and yet despite all of the difficulties1 ,dr4 ,jas4 ,e4 ,rhoades affirmed that there is no field of mission enterprise which has yielded larger returns than that of our native tribes4 ,indians have been reached by the gospel1 and that1 too1 in a very remarkable degree4 ,the 8five civilized tribes10 as they are called1 of the ,indian ,territory1 are practically a ,christian people2 #ha1fba ,indians wear citizens' dress wholly1 and #ei1fie wear citizens' dress in part2 #dc1dbc ,indians labor in civilized pursuits1 and of this number #i1fab are farmers2 #ba1bcb houses are occupied by #dj1jjj ,indians as dwellings2 and the significant thing about all this is that this most promising state of things has chiefly come about since the inauguration of the ,government's ,peace ,policy during the ,presidency of ,general ,grant1 when ,christian missions and ,christian schools were multiplied1 and the ,government1 in co-operation1 made an honest effort to keep faith with the ,indian1 and to give him1 at least1 a show of justice4 ,when the ,indian was given the chance1 he was found ready to accept it4 ,the facts are most encouraging4 ,wonderful has been the progress the gospel has made among these people during the last fifteen years4 ,but the field is vast1 and1 in comparison with the needs1 only a beginning has been made4 ,there are #dj1jjj wild ,indian children in the country4 ,of this number1 all told1 there are but #ab1jjj gathered in the ,government and mission schools1 leaving #bh1jjj children to whom no school opens its door1 and to whom no ,christian missionary comes4 ,there are at least sixty whole tribes upon whose darkness no ray of gospel light has ever fallen1 as pagan and as savage as were their ancestors when the first white man landed upon these shores6 ,you have given yourself to this work1 my brother1 at an auspicious time--at a time luminously prophetic of grand results4 ,god's bell strikes the hour4 ,providential lines converge4 ,the machinations of wicked men are growing less4 ,our into the light and the manhood of the gospel is a work that an angel might covet4 ,to that work you have given yourself1 to that work this ,council has consecrated you1 and into that work we will all follow you with our ,god-speed and benediction4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 ,,evangelistic ,,work4 ,all that ,i can report on this point is that we are feeling our way towards something effective--praying continually1 and watching diligently for an answer to our prayer1 that ,god will raise up some ,chinese believer and endue him with such power that he may not only disciple those already gathered in our schools1 but may make his voice to be heard among the perishing crowds that now refuse to enter our opened doors1 and love darkness rather than light4 ,for three months past we have had ,loo ,quong in the field--a faithful and beloved missionary helper1 previously serving in our ,central school in ,san ,francisco4 ,he spent one month in ,oroville1 one in ,marysville1 and is about completing a third in ,stockton4 ,at each of these points he was joyfully welcomed1 and his abundant labors were rewarded by some measure of success4 ,but that for which we pray we have not yet secured1 though it waits for us1 ,i am sure1 in the gracious purpose of our ,lord4 ,in ,march1 ,i visited these three missions1 and the one in ,sacramento also1 to which our brother will go as soon as his labors in ,stockton are closed4 ,as usual1 my observations both lifted me up and cast me down4 ,most of what is discouraging might have been averted if we had fit ,chinese helpers in sufficient numbers1 and the means to sustain them4 ,the ,american teachers at these points are specially faithful1 skillful and devoted1 but nothing can make up for the loss entailed by the absence of effective ,chinese helpers4 ,oroville is a rendezvous for the ,chinese scattered over a very wide territory4 ,its resident ,chinese population is also large2 not less than six hundred4 ,loo ,quong had done a good work here1 and ,i found the school in better condition than ever before4 ,it was on a week-day evening that we gathered round the table of our ,lord4 ,the room was well filled with ,chinese1 and we had several ,americans with us also4 ,i think that more than twenty communed4 ,one was baptized and received to our little ,chinese church4 ,one other would have been baptized--a brother very well reported of--but he had been obliged to go away to his summer's work1 about eighty miles distant4 ,one brother walked about fifteen miles to be with us at this service1 and trudged back again early the next morning1 gladly sacrificing for it most of his night's rest4 ,very generous subscriptions 7considering their deep poverty7 were made in aid of our work4 ,three on that evening expressed their selections1 filled up the time1 and some new names were obtained for the pledge4 ,the hardest task1 almost1 is to induce the older men to give up tobacco1 but some of them came to that decision in the meeting4 ,providence ,chapel is surrounded by saloons4 ,the noble and energetic pastor spoke to the children of the ,sunday-school in such words as these1 8,if your mother tells you to go and get a glass of beer1 you tell her #8,no4' ,if she whips you1 come and tell me4 ,i want to know who she is4 ,be brave enough to tell her #8,no4'0 ,such words would sound very strange in some places1 but here they are needed1 for some of those very mothers are members of that church1 but they are getting aroused4 ,that meeting ,sunday did a great deal for them4 ,it also did our young people good1 by giving them an opportunity to do something and feel that they were doing something4 ,the meeting was carried on entirely by the colored people1 except that one of the teachers helped make out the programme1 another played the organ and another made a short address4 99 99 99 99 99 ,temperance is1 just now1 a subject of great interest in this ,state4 ,the ,legislature have just voted to submit the question of ,prohibition to the people next fall4 ,what a grand thing it would be if ,tennessee could become a ,prohibition ,state4 ,our little ,sunday-school ,temperance ,workers are doing well4 ,our last meeting was held at a large colored ,methodist ,church4 ,the house was nearly full1 and we had a very enthusiastic meeting4 ,many of the children spoke recitations very beautifully4 ,we had music1 essays1 and some words of counsel from the ministers of the two churches4 ,every one seemed to be very much interested4 ,mr4 ,j4 ,c4 ,johnson1 a prominent white philanthropist of this city1 was there1 and seemed very much pleased4 ,he said he wished we would go to some church every ,sunday and thought we would do a great deal of good4 ,the white temperance leaders feel the importance of securing studies in school is 8,alcohol and ,hygiene10 and our class have become very much interested in it4 ,one of the class said to me a few days since1 8,i just thought people didn't drink because they did many men around him who drank4 ,it wasn't long before one of these men urged ,johnny to take a drink from his bottle4 ,he took some in his mouth1 and then he thought of his pledge1 and ran and spit it out2 then took some water and washed and washed his mouth4 ,little bright-eyed ,willie loved the taste of whisky1 and his father always gave him a sip of his drink4 ,after he signed the pledge1 he so stoutly refused his father when he urged him to drink1 that it affected him so that he1 too1 has signed the pledge for one year4 ,some little ones in another family1 who had always had their
