with but few of this world's goods1 yet not daring to plead this as an excuse for not giving1 she felt heavenly drawings to give to the ,lord this cherished memento of the dear departed one4 ,having known her for many years as a ,dorcas in the church1 ,i cheerfully write these few words1 not because of the intrinsic value of the gift1 but because it is indeed the widow's mite1 and in ,god's sight the widow's mite may be more than the costly offerings of the wealthy40 ,such gifts greatly encourage us1 because they tell of affection and devotion and sacrifice4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we wish to guard our work and friends from imposition4 ,not necessarily imposition in the bad sense4 ,it is to shield them from making donations to objects that in themselves may be worthy1 under the impression that they are giving to the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 when they are doing no such thing4 ,there are a great many schools1 of one kind and another1 that have been started at the ,south among the colored people by private parties1 on a purely independent basis4 ,complaint comes to us frequently that circulars and letters begging for funds with which to carry on these independent enterprises are being continually received1 and that funds are diverted from our treasury on that account4 ,many contribute in response to these appeals under the impression that they are giving to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,these independent ventures differ from our work in one very important respect4 ,all our institutions are under supervision and are held to a strict responsibility and scrutiny4 ,these others to which we refer are irresponsible and not supervised4 ,many of them are carried on with what we should consider a great lack of economy1 and some of them are in the field because those that control them were uncomfortable under supervision4 ,they knew too much to be counseled with and would not be advised4 ,we ask our friends to be careful in the confidence they give to every applicant1 who1 taking the files of the ,,american ,,missionary1 uses the ,united ,states post-office as a means of gaining entrance to their homes and charity4 ,we have no right to dictate to our friends where they shall spend first colored student ever admitted to the ,league4 ,a few of the students were inclined to be angry because he was admitted4 ,they wanted to draw the color line4 ,they tried to work up a feeling of antagonism against the management4 ,they called a meeting of the students1 introduced a series of resolutions against the admission of colored students1 but they were ingloriously defeated4 ,to add to their chagrin1 they were informed that even had their resolutions passed1 the management would have taken no notice of them4 ,mr4 ,bickles is a bright young man1 who until recently was a stable boy at ,islip1 ,l4,i4 ,he has a remarkable talent for drawing and painting1 and his sketches are to be found in many a home in that ,long ,island village4 ,several prominent ,brooklyn gentlemen having summer residences at ,islip1 recognized the young man's ability and urged him to quit the stable and study art4 ,this is the reason why he is now a student of the ,art ,league1 and there is this to his credit1 that he has been admitted to its membership upon the merit of his work4 ,in addition to being a good painter1 he is also a fine musician4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,german1 who owned a large plantation and many slaves near ,savannah1 ,ga41 at his death manumitted his slaves4 ,some of them were his own children4 ,two of his boys he sent to ,germany and had them thoroughly educated4 ,it was the design of the planter to have his property go to his freed children1 as they were the only children he had4 ,the war came and the ,state confiscated the property4 ,one of the boys has been for many years a missionary of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,he spends half an hour daily teaching ,german to the daughter of a prominent white citizen4 ,our missionary writes3 8,yesterday1 while busy teaching this little one1 a visitor looked in and asked the mother in ,german1 #8,what are you doing8' ,she replied1 #8,my little daughter is taking lessons4' ,visitor said something about #8nigger4' ,the lady held up her hand1 as the stranger drew back in the next room1 and said to him1 #8,that is the ,german translator4' ,the visitor answered1 #8,is that the one8' ,the conversation was now carried on in an kindness and respect4 ,the language of the visitor made little impression on me1 for in ,germany ,i have been taught to respect an honest man1 not his color4 ,the ,united ,states is a strange place40 plank on which you may cross to the shore beyond4 ,jesus ,christ is a completed bridge1 over which you may safely pass to the ,heavenly ,home and to the mansion he has prepared for your eternal habitation40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,stanley ,,as ,a ,,missionary4 ,in a recent interview between ,mr4 ,stanley and a newspaper correspondent1 the distinguished explorer said3 8,i have been in ,africa for seventeen years1 and ,i have never met a man who would kill me if ,i folded my hands4 ,what ,i wanted1 and what ,i have been endeavoring to ask for the poor ,africans1 has been the good offices of ,christians1 ever since ,livingstone taught me during those four months that ,i was with him4 ,in #ahga ,i went to him as prejudiced as the biggest atheist in ,london4 ,i was out there1 away from a worldly world4 ,i saw this solitary old man there1 and asked myself1 #8,why on earth does he stop here8' ,for months after we met ,i found myself listening to him and wondering at the old man's carrying out all that was said in the ,bible4 ,little by little his sympathy for others became contagious2 mine was awakened2 seeing his pity1 his gentleness1 his zeal1 his earnestness1 and how he went quietly about his business1 ,i was converted by him1 although he had not tried to do it4 ,how sad that the good old man died so soon6 ,how joyful he would have been if he could have seen what has since happened there60 ,and thus have these great explorers demonstrated the power of sympathy and kindness even upon the most degraded of people4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,look ,,on ,,this ,,side ,,and ,,on ,,that4 ,there is a very ancient chestnut tree which has been shaken by many a traveler on his way4 ,one of its nutshells has a word of wisdom in the story of two knights who contended about a certain shield4 8,it was gold40 8,it was silver40 ,both were sure1 for did they not see it for themselves8 ,both were wrong1 of course2 people usually are who see one side4 ,there were two sides to that shield4 ,the point of view has to do with what one sees4 ,for example1 when ,rev4 ,doctor ,field went ,south1 the shield which he looked at on the way was burnished gold4 ,he saw it4 ,he wrote a book about it1 which was honorable to his heart and to his eyesight4 ,everything was lovely and of good report down ,south4 ,it was faith1 hope and charity1 but the greatest of all was charity4 ,then ,editor ,grady came to ,new ,york and told us in eloquence and imagination of the ,new ,south4 ,the shield which he held up to us was gold studded with diamonds4 8,very well1 let it be gold1 that is what we want10 was the hopeful response of tens of thousands until it has come to be the mode to say1 8,surely it is gold4 ,the era of good will and justice has come1 and nothing either great or small remains for us to do40 ,those of us who have been praying and working for 8the acceptable year of the ,lord0 could wish that this were so1 but it remains true that an intelligent view is not a one-sided view4 ,people may run through the ,south and get the view that leans to inclination4 ,they may have delightfully warm receptions1 but it takes a good many warm days to make a summer4 ,there is no doubt that there is a ,new ,south1 that the beginning of the dawn of a glorious morning is lifting itself up4 ,thoughtful people in the ,south are realizing the trend of things4 ,they are attent to the problems which present themselves4 ,they are re-adjusting their opinions4 ,a few leaders are coming into the realm of convictions which are quite other than those they once entertained4 ,they are nobly meeting questions once ignored4 ,this is the prophecy of the golden year for which the ,american ,missionary ,association has been expending itself4 ,from the time when the ,american ,missionary ,association planted its first ,institution at ,hampton1 ,va41 until its last one was destroyed so lately by incendiaries at ,quitman1 ,ga41 it has waited patiently for ,southern recognition of its work4 ,this has been coming gradually1 and we need not say that we appreciate it4 ,many have been convinced1 some are urgently exhorting us to increased activities and service4 ,thoughtful ,southern people do not look upon a population of another race1 now numbering about seven millions1 which averages upwards of seventy per cent of absolute illiteracy1 with unconcern4 ,they begin to see what we are doing2 they begin1 in some respects1 to feel with us4 ,they even1 in some slight measure1 are co-operating with us4 ,this is the golden side4 ,it is full of promise4 ,but now if one should see this1 and see this only1 he would make a great mistake4 ,that which centuries have cherished will not change in a life-time4 ,it is true that it does not require the heroism of the past years for our teachers to go ,south now1 but none of them1 so far as we have learned1 have been spoiled as yet by being too greatly honored4 ,to illustrate the point of view1 we quote from a recent issue of the ,banner-,watchman of ,athens1 ,ga4 ,it reads3 8,about #h o'clock in the morning of any school day a passer through the streets of ,athens is met by great swarms of negro children on their way to be educated4 99 99 99 99 ,the question naturally presents itself1 who feeds and clothes and buys books for these pupils8 ,we do not suppose that one negro in twenty has #aj worth of property1 and they are paid1 too1 the smallest wages imaginable1 barely sufficient to buy them coarse raiment and the plainest food1 and yet they all seem not only able to keep their children in idleness 7sic7 but these children are nicely clad and have expensive books4 ,the question then arises1 who pays for all this8 ,and the conundrum naturally arises1 what are we educating these young negroes for8 ,what can we do with them8 ,the field for educated whites is narrow enough1 and there is no opening for a learned negro1 except the pulpit and the school bench1 and these two avocations are now crowded to suffocation4 ,experience has taught that when you educate a negro you incapacitate him for manual labor2 and to be a hewer of wood and drawer of water for the superior race is all the sphere that the ,african ever has or ever will creditably fill4 7,we forgive this unpremeditated murder of the ,queen's ,english47 ,visit the chain gangs of ,georgia1 or any old slave ,state1 and you will see that a little education1 assisted by a linen duster1 a cotton umbrella and a hymn book1 is the best recruiting sergeant that the penitentiary has40 8,and yet the white people of our ,state1 through the medium of politicians and office-seekers1 are taking an enormous load of taxation on their shoulders 7sic7 to make convicts and vagabonds of the only class of labor they now have4 ,to substantiate this statement we have only to refer to ,athens before and since public schools were established1 and the history of our city is the history of every place in the ,south where the whites have consented to bear the burthen of educating the negro4 ,there is 7sic7 ten times as much stealing in our midst now as before free schools were established1 and the number of idlers has increased as many fold4 ,so it is unkindness to the negro to lift him above his position40 ,in the same paper1 a second article declares that the colored schools are rapidly 8becoming nuisances40 ,now1 it would not be just to say that the sentiments quoted above are those of the ,new ,south4 ,they are not4 ,it would be equally erroneous to deny that these views would be accepted by the great body of people living in the ,south4 ,the ,new ,south to many means simply a new ,south for white people4 ,those who have had the misfortune to be the children of slavery are to most as yet not in the newness4 ,there is a ,new ,south that is becoming awake to the possibilities1 the opportunities1 and the duties1 especially of the dominant race1 but he shuts his eyes to serious facts1 and to many sad ones1 who is led to think that the movements which we herald with gladness are the thought and feeling of any large significance1 or that they can do the work to which the ,american ,missionary ,association is consecrated4 ,it will1 we fear1 be a long time yet before the ,south will become so new that it will spell negro with one g4 ,and it will be as long perhaps before the poor and despised shall be so elevated and ,christianized that people shall be ashamed to use two g's where one is superfluous4 ,the appreciation which our work gains from noble and thoughtful people in the ,south is the bright side4 ,we love to look upon this4 ,but the fact that there are seven millions of colored people in the ,south1 and probably not more than five hundred well educated colored preachers for them1 is a fact not so bright4 ,our schools and theological seminaries are bright spots in the darkness4 ,while we are grateful to note the fact that the thoughts of men are widening1 we know that there is need of faith and patience1 because there remains much land to be possessed4 ,one need not go far from what is hopeful to find enough to excite concern for the future1 and to urge him to relax no zeal to hasten the day when ,christ shall make all things new4 ,when ,southern newspapers can still print the opinion that education for the ,negro is a recruiting agency for the penitentiary1 and that colored schools are nuisances1 we may be sure that the anxiety of thoughtful people1 who are urging us to do a work which they cannot do and know not how to do1 is very real4 ,as to the truth of such opinions1 which are very common in the ,south1 we have only to quote a sentiment of a modern philosopher1 viz41 8,it is better not to know so many things1 than to know so many things that ain't so40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,things ,,to ,,be ,,remembered--,,no4 #a4 ,it seems to be a condition of every successful benevolent undertaking that there should be a constant recurrence to fundamental principles4 ,the danger1 in all mission enterprises1 is that they will become perfunctory1--about so much to the society--rather than a contribution measured by the forces and the interests involved in its work4 ,it is only when we see the reason of things1 and apportion our gifts according to the significance and value of our work on the ,kingdom of ,christ1 that we give intelligently1 wisely1 steadily for its promotion4 ,the friends of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 we believe1 will thank us if we recall to their minds certain fundamental things1 of which the ,association's work is only an expression4 ,the ,work3 ,three historic heathen races are represented on these shores and engage the labors of the ,association4 ,these races number fully one-half of the human family1 and1 at least1 three-fourths of the un-evangelized portions of the world4 ,for eighteen centuries ,christ has claimed them for his own1 and long ere this would have received them for his inheritance had his people been obedient to his last command4 ,but as we failed to go into all the world1 he has sent the world to us1 until the vast empire of heathendom pushes itself up to our very doors4 ,every day and every hour of the day we touch thousands and millions of ,china and ,africa1 and might1 if we would1 prepare them to be1 respectively1 the saviours of their country4 ,it is not only possible1 but it ought to be an easy thing to raise up out of the seven million blacks1 out of the one hundred thousand ,chinese1 and out of the two hundred and seventy thousand ,indians1 teachers and preachers enough to give the gospel1 with all its accompanying light and power1 to the unnumbered myriads they represent still sitting in the shadow of death4 ,the ,chinese are returning homeward at the rate of thousands a year1 and will all return1 if they live1 at their own charges4 ,who dare say it is not in our power to send them back with enough of the knowledge of ,christ in their heads1 and of his love in their hearts1 to guide themselves and their countrymen to ,heaven8 ,who dare say that we have not ,christian power enough to bring every ,indian in the land under the subduing influence of the ,gospel3 that we have not resources of every kind adequate to preparing thousands and tens of thousands of the sons and daughters of ,africa to be the regenerators of their country8 ,and yet we have been in contact with the ,negro and the ,indian since the landing of the ,pilgrims2 and with the ,chinese since the discovery of gold on the ,pacific coast1 without perceiving that our hand was on the unsaved millions of the globe1 and that we had the opportunity to move and master them for ,christ4 ,has blindness happened to our churches that they do not see the here realize one quarter of the real needs of this field4 ,one has to go into their poor homes and see them in sickness and in death2 come into contact with them day by day1 and feel the general intellectual and spiritual destitution2 see some of them taking on noble1 ,christian manhood and womanhood1 before he can fully comprehend the importance of the work4 ,the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 burdened with debt and beset with calls from other needy fields1 has been able1 so far1 to devote but a small sum to this work2 yet the work has gone on marvelously4 ,it has been clearly shown what can be done4 ,i am sure the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is ready to hear and heed the command of the churches to go forward1 and even to take as a motto3 ,a ,church and a ,school in every ,county in the ,mountains4 ,it is with the hope of contributing a little to such a result that ,i give the following reasons why this should be done3 #a4 ,these counties contain from three to fifteen thousand inhabitants each--some of them even more4 ,in most of them there is no day-school worthy of the name1 no ,sunday-school1 no prayer-meeting1 no educated ministry1 no churches in which pure religion is taught or systematic work of any kind is done4 ,the majority of the people are good-hearted and respond readily to kind words and acts of love4 ,they live mostly in wretched1 windowless log-cabins1 and know few of the blessings of a ,christian land1 having no luxuries and few of those things which are generally considered necessities4 ,physically1 mentally and spiritually they need teaching and elevating4 ,for the sake1 then1 of the two and a half millions already here1 there ought to be a church and a school established at once in the county seat1 or chief place of every county4 ,from these centers the leaven would work through the whole region1 and other churches would spring up about them as they are doing in ,whitley ,co41 ,ky4 #b4 ,the population is increasing very rapidly4 ,even the high death-rate from poor food1 insufficient clothing1 wretched houses1 lack of nursing and of competent medical attendance1 cannot keep down the increase4 ,the children can be readily gathered into ,sunday and day-schools4 ,another generation ought not to be permitted to remain in the condition of the present and past4 #c4 ,then there is a third reason why this work should be undertaken at once on a much larger scale than at present4 ,the attention of the outside world is turning to the wonderful resources of these mountains4 ,it is becoming known that here is the richest undeveloped part of the ,united ,states4 ,the great forests of valuable timber1 the thick and easily-mined deposits of coal1 the fine quality of iron ore close by the coal1 and other undeveloped wealth1 are already drawing men here in large numbers4 ,the railroads are pushing their way among the mountains and immigration will add more and more to the population1 and vastly more to the wealth4 ,villages are springing up1 cities will soon follow1 and before many years this region will be filled with an enterprising and well-to-do people4 ,now is the time for the ,christian influences which are to mould the future history of this people for good1 to be set in motion from strategic points4 ,cannot the ,congregational churches1 which have the lead in ,christian work here1 arise in faith and take possession of the land in the name of the ,lord8 ,there is one place which gives promise of being the future center of this whole region and the largest place in the mountains4 ,it is now absolutely destitute of all elevating1 religious and educational institutions4 ,it is nearly one hundred miles from the nearest ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 work4 ,it is a village of three or four hundred inhabitants1 with a thickly populated country all around it4 ,a railroad is on the way to it1 and it has such exceptional advantages that it can scarcely fail to become a large and important place4 ,it ought to be occupied at once1 for people are beginning to come in advance of the railroad and now is by far the easiest and cheapest time to start the work4 ,is there not some man of consecrated wealth who will assume the financial part of establishing at once a mission in this place8 ,a neat1 inexpensive little chapel1 a school building1 a young minister and his wife1 a teacher and his wife1 would make a beginning from which great things would be sure to result4 ,beginning with this place1 there ought to be a church and a school placed one after another in the most promising places1 until there shall be a center of mental ,yanktons1 some ,brules1 yet all learn to read the ,bible in our ,santee dialect1 and the past year ,i have been much pleased because of their interest in it4 ,often they ask so many questions that we don't get on very far with our reading4 ,it seems to me that the best way to train up a people is to begin with the children4 ,it is like this3 ,once ,i pulled up a little seedling tree a foot high1 prayers were offered1 a little business disposed of1 and the ladies went to their homes wondering why there wasn't more interest in missions4 ,mrs4 ,tucker wasn't in the habit of attending the missionary meeting1 so when she came into one this afternoon1 the ladies present looked at each other in surprise4 ,mrs4 ,gray read the psalm and offered prayer1 and then came the usual dead silence4
