the ,general ,allotment ,act1 has passed4 ,this allows the ,indians to take their lands individually by allotments and patents1 and makes the allottees citizens of the ,united ,states4 ,this bill is far-reaching1 and covers in a measure the objects aimed at by some of the others which failed4 ,among these last is the ,sioux bill1 which proposes to divide up and dispose of parts of the ,sioux reservation in ,dakota4 ,in another column will be found an excellent article1 by ,rev4 ,a4 ,l4 ,riggs1 showing the loss1 and yet the incidental benefits1 that may arise from the failure of this bill4 ,we will only add1 that some of the provisions of the ,sioux bill can indirectly and after some delay be carried out under the ,general ,allotment ,act4 ,the failure of the ,mission ,indian bill is a source of unrelieved regret and indignation4 ,these ,indians1 whose sad story is told so pathetically in ,helen ,hunt ,jackson's 8,ramona10 are still left unprotected1 and their lands are still exposed to the incursions of unscrupulous white men4 ,it is to be hoped that the nation will demand of the next ,congress that justice shall be done to these ,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 ,lincoln ,memorial ,church1 ,washington1 ,d4,c41 has hitherto carried on its work in the ,lincoln ,mission building4 ,this building is held in trust by the ,lincoln ,industrial ,association to sustain educational1 industrial and religious work4 ,this association was in no way connected with the church2 it had several local enterprises under its auspices in the same building in which the work of the church was carried on4 ,thus the growth and usefulness of the church were greatly hindered1 as it had no control of the building and the various enterprises carried on in it4 ,it was clear that a church representing a higher type and standard of ,christian life and worship than the average church of this community was greatly needed in this growing section of the city4 ,it was also evident that if the ,lincoln ,memorial ,church should supply this demand1 steps should be taken to so adjust the property and renovate the building as to make a permanent church home and to promote the most hopeful growth of the work by putting all the departments of work carried on in the building under the management of the church4 ,secretary ,beard and ,superintendent ,ryder1 of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 and the pastor and officers of the ,lincoln ,memorial ,church held a conference1 ,october #bi1 with the ,board of ,directors of the ,lincoln ,industrial ,association to consider the most practical plan of putting the control of the property and all departments of work1 educational1 industrial and religious1 carried on in the building1 under the auspices of the ,lincoln ,memorial ,church4 ,after the subject was fully discussed the following resolution was unanimously adopted by the ,board of ,directors of the ,lincoln ,industrial ,association3 8,resolved1 ,that the ,lincoln ,industrial realize that he is already acquainted with us1 that he has heard us on similar subjects before1 that he knows the general trend of our desires and longings already4 ,when we go before a court of law with our suits we employ an experienced pleader to present our case1 and rightly2 his training1 his habit1 is the lubricating element2 without it progress would be slow1 difficult and tedious4 ,in spiritual matters we cannot do our pleading by proxy2 priests were abolished when ,christ made himself accessible1 through the ,comforter1 to every heart1 and we must now act each for himself2 are busy over 8fonts0 and 8pi10 though no printer's devil has as yet appeared4 ,the scholars have done some good job work already and are thus turning their industrial training into immediate practical benefit4 ,the other departments of the ,institute are keeping step with its industrial development4 ,le ,moyne is broadening its influence constantly and sending its roots deeper and deeper into the intellectual and religious soil of ,memphis4 ,it is recognized as one of the most beneficial institutions in the city by the citizens of all shades of political opinion4 ,the ,congregational ,church stands immediately opposite the ,institute1 and students are especially welcomed into its services and membership4 ,if ,new ,england ,pilgrimism of early days is reproduced anywhere it certainly is in the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 ,the ,church and the ,school are the joint and inseparable agencies for the building of character4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a trip down the ,mississippi ,valley is a revelation to one who has never passed over this route4 ,this valley is the garden region of the old ,south1 that is1 those ,states east of the ,mississippi4 ,it is asserted1 and truthfully1 ,i think1 that two and one-half bales of cotton are sometimes raised for every man1 woman and child of the population of this valley4 ,the land is a deep alluvial loam and produces crops of great variety4 ,cotton1 corn1 potatoes 7sweet and ,irish71 wheat1 oats1 and sugar cane are some among the many products that grow luxuriously here4 ,this region has been avoided by settlers in the past1 because of its unhealthfulness4 ,in the old slave days1 planters lived in the highlands1 back from the river1 and worked their plantations by slave labor4 ,the death of a slave was only unfortunate because of just so much lost live stock4 ,god equalizes things in a strange way4 ,now1 these very people who occupied these lands and tilled them for others are acclimated and can live here and gather the enormous wealth of this wonderful valley4 ,the railroad company has offered unusual inducements to settlers of small capital to take lands here4 ,five thousand colored people have poured into this great garden spot during the past eighteen months and others are constantly coming4 ,what an opportunity for ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 work6 ,pleading invitations come to me from many places along the line of this valley1 begging me to come and see their needs4 ,churches and schools and missions are demanded all through this region immediately4 ,tougaloo ,university was never so well fitted as to-day to meet the needs of these people4 ,its two new ,ballard buildings greatly increase its accommodations and facilities4 ,but other schools1 less advanced and comprehensive1 are needed1 which shall meet the immediate wants of these new communities1 and also be feeders to ,tougaloo4 99 99 99 99 99 ,at one place a considerable colony has settled under the leadership of a former student of ,fisk ,university4 ,he is1 of course1 a ,congregationalist1 and desires the best educational advantages for this new and growing colony4 ,what could not be accomplished here during the next few years if only the treasury warranted the outlay8 ,at ,greenville1 in the heart of this fertile valley1 a small ,congregational ,church1 planted and nurtured by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 is holding up the standard of intelligent preaching and decent forms of public worship4 ,the ,church has no meeting-house1 but holds its services in a school building1 the property of a colored citizen1 who is the editor of the ,greenville ,herald1 a sprightly local paper4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,mississippi ,river is making fearful havoc along its banks4 ,at ,greenville1 fifty feet of ground fell away in a single day4 ,brick buildings are being torn down and frame buildings hurried back on rollers to save them from the mad waters of the mighty river4 ,where the streets of the village were1 a few months ago1 now the river runs more than a hundred feet deep4 ,this is a boom in real estate not thoroughly enjoyed by the citizens4 ,it is attributed to the failure of the ,river and ,harbor bills1 and the citizens are very indignant4 ,i am happy to state that our pastor's home and the proposed site of the new ,congregational ,church are far back from the river1 and no one need withhold his increased contribution to ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 on account of this needy field1 for fear the real estate will wash away4 99 99 99 99 99 ,at ,vicksburg ,i found quite a number of ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 graduates4 ,one hangs out the shingle of an attorney and is doing 8tolerably well1 thank you40 ,two are teachers2 one of these1 a graduate of ,straight ,university1 ,n4 ,o41 has done splendid service for his people and won honor for himself4 ,he is ,superintendent of the city colored schools1 having ten teachers under his direction4 ,he has saved his money and now owns two comfortable cottages and is out of debt2 not a bad showing for a young man only a few years out of college4 99 99 99 99 99 ,louisiana is reaping the harvest of her former seed sowing4 ,arozelles ,parish is agitated over the outrages recently perpetrated against the ,hebrews4 ,witkowsky1 it will be remembered1 was driven from his home in this parish last fall4 ,now these outrages are being repeated against others of that same race4 ,i quote from a local paper3 8,the anti-semitics rode up to the ,kahn store and riddled it and the surrounding fence with bullets4 ,next day ,kahn and ,bauer were served with notices calling attention to what the mob had done1 and warning them to leave the parish at once if they wished to save their lives40 ,the ,governor of ,louisiana is exhorted to stop these outrages4 ,why8 ,it is only a continuance of the policy of violence and murder that has so often brought disgrace upon this and other ,southern ,states4 ,it matters little whether the victims of these brutal outrages are ,negroes or ,hebrews4 ,anyone who chances to be obnoxious to the ,lords of the ,land may meet the same cruel treatment4 ,but better and brighter days are slowly coming1 when all classes can demand and shall receive the impartial protection of the laws4 ,perhaps this new violence to the ,hebrews may arouse the public conscience4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,revivals4 ,,straight ,,university4 ,those acquainted with the history of this institution affirm that it has never before been visited by just such a work of grace as is now gladdening many hearts4 ,the year1 unlike some that have preceded it1 has been free from serious and protracted interruptions4 ,neither ,expositions nor epidemics have made great breaches in the classes or diverted attention from matters of first importance4 ,though our classes have been unusually crowded1 the amount of faithful scholarly work accomplished has been greatly above that of ordinary years4 ,there has been a quiet1 intense determination on the part of pupils to master the subjects in hand1 that has greatly encouraged their teachers4 ,many pupils have expressed a praiseworthy dissatisfaction with their work and a longing to do it better1 and have seemed glad to devote recreation and holiday hours to gain a better mastery of difficult subjects4 ,accompanying this zeal for the acquisition of knowledge there has been1 from the week of prayer1 a deep and growing tenderness on the subject of religion4 ,while there have been no special revival services1 the regular weekly religious meetings of the ,university1 both voluntary and those in the regular order1 have been attended and sustained with the most earnest enthusiasm and by about the same numbers4 ,some four weeks ago a request was made after the ,sunday evening preaching service1 that those who had lately become ,christians would remain4 ,several who had given good evidence of a change of heart were absent from the service1 but fourteen remained and bore glad witness to personal experience of the ,lord's saving power4 ,since then the work has gone on steadily1 and about one soul a day has come into the light4 ,the ,spirit is revealing ,his presence in all grades of the ,university1 and boarders and day pupils are witnessing to ,his saving power4 ,the work is very quiet1 deep and wonderful4 ,there are over forty-five who give evidence of having been 8born from above40 ,the following incident illustrates the peculiar graciousness of the work as it was modestly related by one of the teachers last evening in ,faculty meeting3 8,yesterday noon1 as my scholars were passing out of the room1 a boy stepped out of the line and stood waiting to speak with me4 ,when all had left the room1 ,i said3 #8,well1 ,b41 what can ,i do for you8' ,with a voice broken with emotion1 he exclaimed3 #8,oh1 ,miss ,p41 ,i want to be a ,christian2 ,i have wanted to be one for a good while1 and ,i want you to pray for me4' ,i was surprised1 as he had given me considerable trouble for weeks1 and ,i had not thought him seriously inclined till that morning4 8#8,i certainly will pray for you1' ,i replied2 #8would you like to have me do so now8' 8#8,yes1 ma'am1' was his earnest response4 8,turning the key in the lock1 to avoid interruptions1 ,i knelt with him and asked the ,lord to help him give up everything4 ,he tried to pray1 but could only say1 #8,oh1 ,lord6 ,oh1 ,lord66' and broke into sobs4 ,i then opened the ,bible and read1 #8,come unto ,me1' #8,i am the ,way1' and other passages4 ,he having regained his self-possession as ,i opened to him the ,scripture1 ,i said3 #8,now1 is there anything you have not given up--anything you are not willing to give up for ,christ8' #8,no1' he answered1 firmly1 #8,i do not care for anything2 ,i want to be a ,christian4' ,i was obliged to leave him here1 and did not have a chance to speak with him again that day4 ,this morning he was a little late1 but something in his face as he said #8good morning1' told me that the struggle was ended4 ,this noon he again left the line1 and without waiting for his mates to pass out1 held out his hand1 joyfully exclaiming3 #8,miss ,p41 ,i want to tell you that ,i have found ,jesus2 ,i found him last night1 and ,i am happier than ,i have ever been since ,i was born2 ,i mean to serve ,him as long as ,i live4' ,i never heard a more earnest and hearty confession of ,christ40 ,the frequent occurrence of incidents like this fill all our hearts with deep awe and invest every act and word with a tender solemnity4 ,we feel the majestic presence in our midst of ,one seeking and saving that which was lost4 ,pray for us1 brethren1 that the will of ,god may be fully wrought among us1 and these youths1 so eager for that education which is so necessary for the future well-being of the ,south1 be enriched above all other getting with 8the gift of eternal life40 ,m4 ,l4 ,,berger4 ,,fisk ,,university4 ,the time has come in the religious history of the year in ,fisk ,university when an account of the work done may be given4 ,i have no doubt that it will interest and encourage the friends of the ,association4 ,during the week of prayer for the ,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a4 among colleges1 the young men of the institution who belong to the ,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a4 of ,fisk held meetings and did good work among the young men who do not profess to be ,christians4 ,as a result1 three or four were hopefully converted4 ,the week of prayer was observed in the institution1 meetings being held immediately after supper4 ,from the beginning to the end the attendance was large and the interest great4 ,the meetings continued four weeks1 and have just closed4 ,twenty-five of the students have been converted1 including the three or four who were converted during the week of prayer held by the young men4 ,the interest culminated at the meetings during the day of prayer for colleges4 ,the afternoon meeting of that day was one of the most remarkable ever held in the ,university4 ,at the beginning of the meeting1 ,president ,cravath gave the following statistics of the higher grades3 ,students in college1 #db1 professing ,christians1 #cg2 ,normal students1 #dj1 professing ,christians1 #cf2 ,college preparatory students1 #df1 professing ,christians1 #cd4 ,total number in higher grades1 #abf2 total number of professing ,christians1 #aba1 or about #hf per cent4 ,the key-note to the meeting was given by ,george ,mc,lellan1 a former graduate1 who had studied theology at ,hartford for a year4 ,he said that in a meeting at ,hartford he found that ,fisk had a larger percentage of ,christian students than any other college represented in the meeting1 but that the students of ,fisk were not entering the ministry in such large numbers as the students from other colleges were4 ,the key-note once struck1 a most interesting discussion arose as to why the students of ,fisk were not entering the ministry4 ,different causes were assigned1 which may be reduced to one or two4 ,there is not sufficient inducement offered to the young men to become ministers2 the claims of the ministry are not presented with sufficient stress2 the churches are so few and so small that the prospect is very discouraging2 if a young man offers himself for the ministry1 he must go ,north to study theology1 where he is in danger of being educated out of sympathy with his people4 ,the ,southern schools have no well-equipped seminaries in which young men may be educated4 ,the meeting closed with this question still uppermost1 and at night it was taken up by common consent and another hour spent in considering it4 ,it was felt by all that the time had come for the establishment of a well endowed theological seminary for the schools in the ,south4 ,h4 ,s4 ,,bennett4 ,,savannah4 ,the revival in ,savannah and vicinity began with the church in ,woodville in ,november1 spread to ,mc,intosh1 thence to ,savannah4 ,results3 somewhat more than two hundred appear desirous for the ,christian life1 and great renewal to activity among the members in these churches4 ,the presentation of the sole essential--a crucified ,saviour2 ,scriptures linked in argument like shields in the ,phalanx1 and pressed day after day by ,evangelist ,james ,wharton1 of ,barrow-in-,furnes1 ,england1 are not to be lightly esteemed if no conversion had resulted4 ,the man who holds that the congregations gathered in ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 churches cannot be moved by the ,book1 was not present during these services4 ,march #f1 at our feast of in-gathering1 the ,savannah ,church gave the right hand to twenty-nine new members1 in part the fruit of this revival4 ,tender and thankful were the tears of joy shed by the faithful teachers as those converted in answer to their prayers stood forth to confess the ,saviour4 ,the harvest from seed long sown was there in the converted mother1 at whose recall a ,magdalen home is purified1 and a son and daughter stand on either hand1 making the gracious picture complete4 ,let ,shelburne1 ,mass41 hear this testimony1 8,i have never been at rest till now since ,i was in one of ,miss ,hardy's mother-meetings long ago40 ,,dana ,,sherrill4 ,,storrs ,,school4 ,the last has ,,concert ,,to ,,governor ,,and ,,legislature ,,of ,,tennessee ,,by ,,fisk ,,university4 ,the ,mozart ,society1 under the direction of ,prof4 ,spence1 has just given its concert complimentary to ,his ,excellency the ,governor1 and the ,legislature of ,tennessee4 ,the ,governor was unable to attend on account of sickness in his family1 but sent a letter to ,prof4 ,spence expressing his regret4 ,this is the third time that a complimentary concert has been given to the ,legislature1 at its different sessions1 but this one was probably the most successful in every sense4 ,the whole chapel was reserved for our guests2 no tickets being sold1 and the students not attending1 that there might be room for the entire body4 ,a few leading citizens1 both white and colored1 were invited1 and the ,faculty and teachers of the ,university were also present4 ,the night was warm and pleasant1 and students appointed for the purpose met our distinguished guests at the street car1 a quarter of a mile distant1 escorting them up through the unlighted street4 ,the ,hall1 however1 was brilliantly lighted1 and when the concert began was well filled1 still others coming in later in the evening4 ,the ,mozart ,society1 consisting of fifty members1 with piano1 organ1 violins1 flute and cornet1 occupied the raised platform in front4 ,the ,society includes all grades of students1 but more especially are they from the advanced classes1 as the very difficult music which they render requires all the mental power of which they are capable4 ,prof4 ,spence is the soul and life of the ,society1 and gives himself to it with an energy and enthusiasm that is an inspiration to all the members4 ,they have studied music from the great composers for several years1 and during the present school year have devoted themselves especially to the ,oratorio of ,elijah4 ,the first half of the concert consisted of selections from this ,oratorio4 ,all who are acquainted with the music know that it is simply sublime and that it must be a most unappreciative soul that can listen to it without being deeply moved4 ,the opening chorus1 8,help1 ,lord6 ,wilt ,thou quite destroy us80 was so full of pathos and of pleading that it seemed to subdue and quiet the whole audience4 ,indeed1 the silence that prevailed throughout the entire rendering testified to the interest felt4 ,when they sang1 8,lord6 bow thine ear to our prayer60 the breathless stillness in the house made us feel that much of real prayer was there1 and we wondered if hearts that had never before felt ,god's presence might not be audience broke into applause1 but generally expressed themselves by quiet attention4 ,probably the style of music was new to many of them1 and it was interesting to watch the faces of different ones as they listened4 ,some were at first perhaps disappointed1 evidently not expecting that kind of music1 but a growing and deepening interest marked their faces as they sat watching as well as listening4 ,when ,elijah pleaded for rain1 and the people cried1 8,help1 send thy servant help1 ,o ,god60 8,hear from heaven1 and forgive their sin10 the listening attitude of the audience seemed to express sympathy with the sad refrain1 and when1 at last1 the grand chorus1 8,thanks be to ,god10 burst forth1 it was almost overwhelming4 ,what a lifting up of voices it was6 it with a piercing sweetness that rent the air and bowed all hearts before it4 ,the second part of the concert consisted of ,jubilee songs1 college songs1 and patriotic songs1 more popular music1 but to some of us it was a letting down from the heights to which we had been lifted4 ,it was received1 however1 with demonstrations of delight1 which could not have been expressed for the first part1 if it had been felt4 ,almost everything was encored4 ,the college songs were full of rollicking fun1 and the ,jubilee music brought rounds of applause again and again4 ,when 8,good news1 the chariot's coming10 and 8,silver ,slippers0 were sung1 the dignified legislators got to beating time with their feet in real camp-meeting style4 8,way down upon the ,suwanee ,river0 was sung with a softness and sweetness that reminded one of ,jenny ,jackson in the old ,jubilee days4 ,it was listened to with breathless attention and followed by prolonged applause4 ,the concert closed with 8,america10 beautiful and grand1 as it always is4 ,the whole audience rose to their feet and joined with a heartiness which showed that the 8old time0 has indeed 8gone10 and 8new times0 for the ,south1 white and black1 are already here4 ,h4 ,m4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,failure ,,of ,,the ,,sioux ,,bill4 ,this bill1 known also as the ,dawes ,bill1 for the opening of parts of the great ,sioux reservation and settling the tribal boundaries of each division of the ,sioux nation now occupying it1 failed to become a law by the fatal objection of one man1 ,representative ,holman4 ,the bill was warmly advocated by the best friends of the ,indians as being the best possible compromise with the tide of civilization pressing in on these people from every side4 ,the ,black ,hills were seized by the whites first1 and bought afterwards4 ,it was hoped to prevent the recurrence of such robberies4 ,it was also felt that these ,indians needed to be forcibly reminded that their condition has changed1 and that they must speedily adapt themselves to the ways of civilization or go under4 ,the majority of them accept this idea in theory1 but are very slow to adjust themselves to it practically4 ,the thing they are slowest about is to select for themselves good lands for homesteads4 ,they are loth to separate from each other1 and few of them have any idea of what good land is4 ,here may be one of the ways in which the postponement of this measure will be a blessing4 ,time is something much needed in the ,indian's re-adjustment of himself to the new conditions of life4 ,if he can only be encouraged now to exert himself to establish a separate home and open a farm2 if he can be guided so as to avoid serious mistakes1 he will come out the better for the delay4 ,let the ,christian public throw their sympathy and interest towards securing this end4 ,the ,government is well disposed1 but cannot act alone4 ,it will do what the public demands4 ,what is needed is the multiplication of such sub-agents as our ,rev4 ,john ,e4 ,smith at the ,ponca ,agency1 ,dakota1 who is both ,government teacher and our missionary4 ,he knows every man1 woman and child in his charge1 and just what they are doing4 ,or take our native missionary1 ,mr4 ,francis ,frazier1 at ,burrell ,station1 ,swift ,bear's colony4 ,he is himself a practical farmer1 and an ,indian4 ,what ,indian has done1 ,indian can do4 ,now1 if such men were planted all over the ,sioux country in charge of small colonies of farming ,indians1 properly backed up by ,government1 the progress of this people would be rapid4 ,as it is1 the colony from ,rosebud ,agency at ,swift ,bear's have to choose between the barren lands near the ,agency1 or spend half their time traveling back and forth over the one hundred and forty miles to their farms located in the best land of the whole reserve4 ,there is no encouragement in that for an ,indian to choose land that will bring him a living when ,government rations cease4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,grand ,,river ,,mission ,miss ,collins' introduction to work in her new field has been no tame affair1 as far as the physical elements could make it4 ,the winter has been unusually cold and stormy4 ,but the people have welcomed her cordially1 and she has been especially helpful to the sick4 ,her administration of simple remedies has been blessed of the ,lord to work a number of cures1 which1 to the ,indians1 have seemed miraculous and have given her a reputation as a healer1 so that they bring their sick to her from all directions4 ,one morning she found at her door a young woman sick with pneumonia1 who had been brought there on a hand sled by her mother and sister through a fearful snow storm4 ,miss ,collins expostulated with them for so exposing the sick one4 ,the mother answered3 8,we heard that unless you see their body with your own eyes1 and lay your hands upon them1 you cannot heal them40 ,this report1 no doubt1 arose from her feeling the pulse of the sick4 ,a child1 whose sister had died with convulsions and ,st4 ,vitus' dance1 and who was also thought to be dying in the same way1 was brought to her4 ,the spasms were relieved at once1 and in a few days the root of the difficulty was discovered and she was cured4 ,elias ,gilbert1 the new teacher who takes the place of ,edwin ,phelps during his absence at ,hampton1 works in finely4 ,he is very enthusiastic over the progress the people have made under his predecessor and the hearty interest they take in the school and in church services4 ,on the ,sabbath there is a very interesting woman's meeting1 numbering about thirty1 mostly mothers4 ,adams ,wakanna is the new worker at ,oak ,lake1 another point in this field4 ,this is newer ground1 and the people are yet in careless ignorance of the way of life4 ,but our native helper is full of zeal1 for this very reason4 ,he is working well4 ,edwin ,phelps1 who has worked so long and so well in this field1 is now at ,hampton1 ,va41 taking ,bible studies and serving as ,indian ,chaplain there4 ,many of the pupils at ,hampton are from his own field at ,standing ,rock ,agency4 ,so he has a special interest in them and a personal hold upon them4 ,he cannot fail to do them good4 ,this ,grand ,river field should at once have a thorough equipment of buildings and missionary force4 ,four thousand dollars were given two years ago by ,mr4 ,e4 ,b4 ,monroe to build this ,mission4 ,but everything waits for the fit man for a missionary4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,new ,,home4 ,,by ,,the ,,rev4 ,c4 ,t4 ,,weitzel4 ,the ,santa ,barbara ,chinese ,mission has taken a long step forward4 ,until the beginning of this year1 its rooms were hired4 ,now it lives in rooms of its own on grounds of its own4 and a wise caution all alike admirable1 he set about the solution of it4 ,within forty-eight hours after the steamer landed him1 a desirable lot had been purchased and the contract for a mission-house made4 ,in a week's time the building was sufficiently advanced to be used by the young men for their ,chinese ,new-year's reception4 ,on the evening of ,feb4 #aath1 it was formally dedicated4 ,i had charge of the service1 and fully sympathized with ,mr4 ,pond's earnest wish that it should be a decidedly religious and solemn one4 ,his letter for the occasion1 and the addresses of the evening1 which were interpreted by the helper1 ,foo ,king1 all strongly emphasized the religious purpose and character of this mission work4 ,the building was set apart not only as a place of instruction1 but also as a place of worship2 not only as a school1 but also as a sanctuary4 ,may it become1 indeed1 a sacred place to many of these our brethren by the manifestation of the ,divine ,spirit in ,his enlightening and converting power6 ,as for the spiritual results among these young men1 it is even more difficult than in ordinary evangelistic effort to speak definitely and positively4 ,yet no one1 it seems to me1 can look into the many eager and open countenances to be seen every evening in those mission rooms1 without the conviction that somehow the good seed is growing in those hearts4 ,nor
