for all the region round about4 ,to him who scans it carefully the list reveals the variety of the work4 ,it is both evangelistic and educational4 ,church planting and building2 ,sunday-school work2 primary1 normal1 industrial1 collegiate and professional training1 are all represented1 because the people need to be instructed in everything secular1 social and religious1 that pertains to civilized life and well-ordered society4 ,if facts and incidents in the lives of individual missionaries and in the development of work at specified points are ascertained 7consult back numbers of ,,the ,,american ,,missionary7 and brought into the public meeting1 interest cannot fail to be awakened2 nor will the interest be evanescent2 it will go home with the people2 it will stay with them2 it will have become well known2 but for the greater part they are indefinitely thought of in the mass4 ,the same is true of the missionaries4 ,only a few of them are widely known4 ,yet in their isolation1 bearing obloquy and reproach for their work's sake1 misjudged as to their character and mission1 even by ,christian ministers and church members who keep aloof from their acquaintance and fellowship1 it is natural that they should crave the expressed sympathy of those they represent4 ,it would lighten their burdens and brighten their path to feel that they are known and remembered by name in the churches at home4 ,there is one thing to be noted which a mere study of the list does not reveal1 and that is3 our missionaries are a very happy band4 ,despite the discouragements and trials incident to their work1 they are neither cast down nor discouraged4 ,on this point their testimony is strong and continuous4 ,they have the joy of their ,lord's presence and the sustaining power of ,his almighty grace4 8,i will never leave thee1 nor forsake thee10 has become the gladsome song of their hearts4 ,they are happy1 too1 in the knowledge that they have so many friends and such generous supporters4 ,the fact that the list of their names is so long proves to them that their work has taken a large hold upon the churches4 ,the fact that contributions come from so many churches and individuals1 in amount sufficient to maintain so great a work as the ,association is carrying forward1 is a demonstration that they have the love and hearty support of tens of thousands1 some of whom make large sacrifices to contribute as they do4 ,they know that there are thousands who eloquently plead their cause and defend their good name before the public1 and on bended knee remember them and their work at the ,throne of ,grace4 ,they are happy1 also1 in the knowledge that they are loved and honored by those for whom they labor4 ,father ,riggs was almost worshipped by the ,indians who knew used as far as possible for the #8glory of ,god4' ,i was curious to know what course was taken1 and upon investigation found that1 after meditation and prayer1 the pious trustees sold their living this anniversary of special interest to the readers of the ,,missionary4 ,it was a speech by ,mr4 ,h4 ,w4 ,grady1 editor of the ,atlanta ,constitution4 ,mr4 ,grady is a representative ,southerner of the progressive type4 ,his theme was ,the ,new ,south1 and he handled it in such a way as to elicit the heartiest applause and the warmest commendation from those who heard him4 ,of course he could not speak on such a theme without having a good deal to say about the negro4 ,we give the following extracts3 8,but what is the sum of our work8 ,we have found out that in the general summing up the free negro counts more than he did as a slave4 ,we have planted the schoolhouse on the hill-top and made it free to white and black40 8,the relations of the ,southern people with the negro are close and cordial4 ,we remember with what fidelity for four years he guarded our defenseless women and children1 whose husbands and fathers were fighting against his freedom4 ,to his eternal credit be it said that whenever he struck a blow for his own liberty he fought in open battle1 and when at last he raised his black and humble hands that the shackles might be struck off1 those hands were innocent committed you to the cause of human liberty against which the arms of man cannot prevail1 while those of our statesmen who made slavery the corner-stone of the ,confederacy1 doomed us to defeat1 committing us to a cause that reason could not defend or the sword maintain in the light of advancing civilization40 8,we fought hard enough to know that we were whipped1 and in perfect frankness ,when ,mr4 ,grady said1 8,we have planted the school house on the hill-top and made it free to white and black10 he must have had in mind the ,atlanta ,university1 for he knows all about that school4 ,the #h1jjj a year appropriated from the ,state justly entitles the ,georgians to regard ,atlanta ,university as a ,state school4 ,but whence comes the money necessary to supplement this appropriation1 to meet current expenses8 ,whence came the #aej1jjj1 and more1 that have gone into the fine grounds1 buildings and equipments8 ,from ,new ,englanders and children of ,new ,englanders in the ,west1 through the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,mr4 ,grady must have known these facts4 ,he knew that ,new ,england brains conceived the school1 that ,new ,england money planted it1 that ,new ,englanders have always been1 and are1 its teachers1 what sacrifices they have made1 what social ostracism endured1 what splendid work they have done and are doing4 ,he knows from personal inspection the superiority of that school1 and that this superiority has frequently been spoken of in the columns of the able paper of which he is the editor4 ,he knows that the munificent funds bearing the names of ,slater and ,peabody were given by ,new ,englanders4 ,all these things1 and more in the same direction1 ,mr4 ,grady knows1 and yet in the presence of ,new ,englanders and in the city where are the headquarters of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 he did not make the faintest reference in recognition4 ,it is said his speech was extemporaneous4 ,nevertheless was it not for white students in ,chattanooga1 ,tenn4 ,some colored students applied for admission4 ,they were refused1 but this was not the end4 ,a colored minister1 ,rev4 ,b4 ,h4 ,johnson1 pastor of one of the ,methodist ,episcopal ,churches of ,chattanooga1 meeting ,professor ,caulkins of the university in a store1 offered him his hand1 but as it was a black hand the professor would not accept it4 ,that would have been a recognition of 8social equality40 ,the colored brother felt1 and felt justly1 that he had been insulted4 ,when knowledge of the insult reached the ,executive ,committee of the ,freedmen's ,aid ,society1 whose funds in large part built and support the university1 steps were immediately taken to learn the exact facts in the case4 ,they moved cautiously and wisely1 that no wrong should be done and that no unjust judgment should be pronounced1 and when they had made a thorough examination of the whole case1 heard from both sides and from all sides1 they voted that through the trustees of the university the professor be asked to resign at once4 ,the ,executive ,committee has done right and should have the cordial backing of the entire ,methodist ,church4 ,a mistake was made when the colored students were refused admission4 ,no matter if they were hired by wicked white men to go and force the issue4 ,all the more should an issue be met when forced by such during the first days that ,i spent here1 before ,i began to feel that ,i was a part of it4 ,the teachers and scholars were just returning after vacation4 ,the teachers seemed especially happy in meeting the scholars and one another1 and beginning work again4 ,i had never known a company of people with so much care who seemed so light hearted and hopeful1 and ,i thought 8,they love their work40 ,the boys and girls seemed happy1 too1 and when ,i looked at their faces in the chapel and met them later in the home and school1 ,i found in many of them a gentleness and frankness1 a trustfulness and willingness to be taught1 that surprised me4 ,i had looked for less of these qualities than in white children1 but ,i found more than would be found in most white schools4 ,their reverence and attention in church1 too1 was in striking contrast with what ,i have seen in many places where the children seem to take no part in the worship4 ,these children always take the attitude of devotion during prayer1 and sit quietly and with serious demeanor through three or four services on ,sunday4 ,they seem to enjoy it1 too1 even when there is a part that they imperfectly understand1 on account of the use of two languages in these services4 ,they love ,bible stories and hymns1 and accept what they are taught concerning religious things1 with a simplicity that ,i have been used to finding only in the youngest4 ,perhaps it is because they are so shut in by themselves here4 ,they know little of the indifference or half concealed hostility to religious truth that is so common in larger communities1 even among those who attend church regularly4 ,during the first weeks here1 while our windows were constantly open1 ,i was struck by the amount of singing ,i heard4 ,from more than one of the houses where the scholars live ,i could hear the hymn sung at morning prayers2 then came the voices of the school in their opening exercises1 and later of the music classes4 ,beside this we often heard the boys and girls singing in recreation hours for pleasure1 and again at night before retiring1 their evening hymn4 ,the sacred words and the young voices could not fail to bring good thoughts1 and ,i was reminded of ,luther's saying1 8,the devil always flies from music1 especially sacred music1 because he is a gloomy spirit1 and cannot bear joy and gladness40 ,i am conscious that after three months here ,i see many things in a different light from that in which ,i first saw them4 ,i have learned that there are some peculiar hindrances to teaching the ,indians1 so that it is by ,gin ,foo ,king and myself1 were busily engaged in teaching the other scholars at the ,barnes school1 our attention was diverted by the voice of one who was not studying1 but talking aloud4 ,he was a pompous fellow1 who1 though he is only a servant1 dresses like a very rich man4 ,working for #af per month1 he wears a purple figured silk coat and a gold bracelet4 ,he puts on the appearance1 in the school-room1 of high breeding and great learning4 ,as we listened to him1 this is what we heard3 #8,what doctrine have the foreigners8 ,they have no duty between ,emperor and officials1 parents and children1 elder and younger brother1 husband and wife1 or even between friends2 but we1 ,chinese1 are taught by our great sage1 ,confucius4 ,his teaching on these duties is above all that men ever taught on earth4 ,the foreigner has not the son of heaven 7meaning the ,emperor74 ,when he is #ba years old he leaves his home and thinks no more of his parents2 not only so1 but leaves them to take care of themselves4 ,the husband lends his wife to his friends1 who walk with her arm in arm on the street4 ,the way of courtship and marriage is like that of beasts4 ,he knows no politeness1 no integrity1 no modesty1 and no shame2 in fact1 all foreigners are barbarians4 ,confucius said3 8,i have heard of barbarians becoming ,chinese1 but have never heard of ,chinese becoming barbarians40' claim that you are more enlightened than she8' ,i then explained to him that those whom ,confucius called barbarians were people within the ,chinese ,empire2 his ,china was a small country1 covering
