manner both at the ,north and at the ,south4 ,our appeals have been heard and have met with generous responses4 ,the religious press has rendered us most valuable aid4 ,friends have interested friends in our behalf4 ,the debt has been almost wiped out4 ,the year of #ahhf stands conspicuous in its attestation of the favor ,god has given the ,association in the eyes of the churches4 ,our greeting1 therefore1 is not merely formal4 ,we have occasion to be grateful4 ,will our friends then please be assured of our gratitude1 as entering upon the work of #ahhg we wish for them1 one and all1 a 8,happy ,new ,year40 ,this is the time to make resolutions4 ,good resolutions now formed and faithfully carried out will be certain to make the new year a happy one4 ,we would suggest that the resolutions passed at the ,national ,council at ,chicago and adopted as its own by our annual meeting at ,new ,haven1 asking for #cej1jjj from the churches this year for our work1 be approved by every reader of ,,the ,,missionary1 with this one added1 8,resolved1 that ,i will do my part as an individual to make these resolutions effectual40 ,if this resolution is heartily adopted and lived up to1 then certain results will follow3 7#a7 ,the sixty per cent4 increase upon the contributions of last year1 that the amount called for necessitates1 will be secured4 7#b7 ,a larger number of churches will be found among those contributing to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 than has ever yet been recorded4 7#c7 ,special appeals will not be heard4 7#d7 ,demanded enlargement of work at a number of points will be made1 and new fields entered4 7#e7 ,our missionaries will be made happy in the knowledge that their work is to be sustained4 ,we feel that we can ask ,god's blessing upon all who thus resolve with an assurance of faith that the blessing will be bestowed where the resolution is kept4 ,one of the crying evils of the times is the severe tax put upon the eyes by reading small print4 ,,the ,,american ,,missionary has been an offender in this respect1 but it has seen the error of its ways and promises to try to do better4 ,it has selected the first month of the new year in which to inaugurate the reform4 ,small print has been banished from its pages of reading matter4 ,we trust that this effort of ,the ,missionary to make its pages more readable will be responded to by a great increase in the number of its readers4 ,the annual subscription is only fifty cents4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,notes ,,in ,,the ,,saddle1 by ,field-,superintendent ,ryder1 is a heading under which will be found1 on another page1 some good reading4 ,we hope to continue these notes during the year4 ,we caution our readers against falling into the phonetic craze when they read this announcement4 ,we are not responsible for the way in which our ,superintendent spells his name1 but we presume he follows the analogy of 8ancient tyme40 ,at any rate1 he who in the saddle1 with reins over the neck and speed unchecked1 can make notes1 must be an expert rider1 no matter how we spell or pronounce his name4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we ask the special attention of our lady readers to the present number of ,the ,missionary4 ,they will find ,miss ,emerson's report and the papers presented by ,miss ,robertson and ,miss ,ilsley at the ,new ,haven meeting1 which we print elsewhere1 to be most interesting reading4 ,we are very sorry that space does not permit us to also print the most excellent address of ,mrs4 ,st4 ,clair4 ,any lady who has the ,january ,missionary in her possession and allows the next ,woman's ,missionary ,meeting to be a dull one1 ought to be disciplined for not living up to her privileges4 ,just read this number through and see if you don't think so too4 99 99 99 99 99 ,immediately following the annual meeting1 under the charge of ,secretary ,shelton1 ,rev4 ,a4 ,l4 ,riggs1 with ,pastor ,ehnamani and the ,santee ,school ,indian students1 started through ,new ,england upon a speaking and singing campaign in behalf of our ,indian ,missions4 ,at the same time1 ,secretary ,roy1 accompanied by ,rev4 ,geo4 ,v4 ,clark1 of ,athens1 ,ga41 an ex-slave and a child of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a41 started in upon a similar campaign through ,ohio4 ,for six weeks1 meetings were held almost every night in the week1 with occasional meetings in the afternoon4 ,on ,sundays three meetings were usually held4 ,large audiences1 sometimes crowded1 even on week nights1 have greeted and with interest listened to them4 ,at ,cleveland both forces joined1 devoting a ,sabbath to the ,congregational churches in that city4 ,the ,monday evening following1 a final meeting of the ,ohio campaign was held in ,oberlin1 where the magnificent audience and spirit of the meeting were a worthy close to the series and in perfect keeping with the historic record of ,oberlin on the subject of missions4 ,here the bands separated to meet at the end of one week in ,oak ,park1 where ,secretary ,roy with his family resides1 and where ,secretary ,shelton formerly resided4 ,the ,congregational church of ,oak ,park was crowded to its utmost capacity with those who came to attend the final meetings of the two campaigns and to listen to the singing and the speaking of both forces4 ,a beautiful incident in this meeting was the solo singing of a slave song by ,mr4 ,clark1 the chorus to which was taken up by the ,indian students2 and another incident in the same direction was the rendering of a slave song1 in the chorus to which both the audience and the students responded4 99 99 99 99 99 ,to repair the damage done our mission home and school buildings by the earthquake at ,charleston a careful estimate calls for not less than #b1ejj4 ,one of our teachers1 ,mr4 ,e4 ,a4 ,lawrence1 has been meeting the emergency by holding school in a barn4 ,the time has come when the necessary repairs must be made1 both upon the home and school4 ,hundreds of scholars are waiting and parents are begging that ,avery ,institute be again opened4 ,in response to our former appeals for ,charleston some special donations have been received1 but they are entirely inadequate to meet the emergency4 ,we beg leave to remind our friends that the money needed to make these repairs must be furnished either by special contributions or else taken out of money already appropriated to other work4 ,we trust they will not leave us to be compelled to do the latter4 ,it may also be added that to delay these repairs much longer will result in the ruin of the buildings4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,report ,,of ,,the ,,commissioner ,,of ,,indian ,,affairs4 ,the ,second ,annual ,report of ,commissioner ,atkins is a candid and comprehensive document1 dealing briefly but frankly with the several problems growing out of the relations of the ,government to the ,indians4 ,we have not space for a review of the ,report1 but we wish to call special attention to the facts which it incidentally presents as to the neglect of ,congress1 and especially of the ,house of ,representatives1 to act upon a number of important bills touching ,indian affairs4 ,no less than eight such bills are mentioned--six of them passed the ,senate1 but failed to receive final action in the ,house--and some of these are by far the most essential to the welfare of the ,indians4 ,three of these bills we wish particularly to name3 ,the ,dawes' ,bill for the ,allotment of ,lands in ,severalty2 the ,sioux ,bill for the ,division of the great ,sioux ,reservation into six reservations2 and the ,bill for the ,relief of the ,mission ,indians in ,california4 ,the first of these is fundamental to the settlement of the ,indians in separate homes1 and consequently to their becoming ,american citizens2 the second has the same end in view2 and the third is a simple act of justice1 long and shamefully deferred1 to the suffering and deserving ,indians1 whose sad case has been so pathetically depicted by ,mrs4 ,helen ,hunt ,jackson in her touching story of ,romona4 ,we ask attention to these bills for a practical purpose4 ,congress should be urged to act upon them at once4 ,the present session is the short one1 ending ,march #dth4 ,if this session closes without passing these bills1 the whole subject will be deferred almost indefinitely4 ,the next ,congress will be a new one2 the ,members to some extent will be new2 the committees maybe wholly so1 and they may need years of petitioning1 educating and inspiring to move them to proper action on these essential topics4 ,no time can be lost4 ,no influence is so great upon the average ,congressman as letters directly from his constituents4 ,we therefore urge every reader of these pages to write at once to the ,member of ,congress from his district1 or to others whom he may know1 asking for prompt and energetic efforts for the passage of these bills4 ,on another page of ,,the ,,missionary will be found the admirable address of ,president ,seelye1 presenting the paramount importance of religious effort on the part of the churches in behalf of the ,indians4 ,we are in full accord with this view4 ,but the ,government has also its responsibilities1 and all that it does in the lines we have suggested will only facilitate the work of preparing the ,indians for what we wish them all ultimately to be1 intelligent1 self-supporting ,christian citizens4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,what ,,some ,,women ,,are ,,doing4 ,,rev4 ,a4 ,h4 ,,bradford1 ,d4,d4 ,this is woman's era4 ,her influence and presence are in all spheres4 ,within a quarter of a century there were few in stores1 and none in public offices4 ,to-day they are clerks1 operators in the factories1 teachers in schools2 they are in telegraph1 and telephone1 and post-offices2 they are artists and traders2 a few are captains of steamboats2 a few are lawyers2 now and then one ventures to preach2 and even the mysteries of ,wall ,street are not terrifying to them1 for they have commenced competition with the brokers4 ,women have already won recognition in the practice of medicine1 and are among the most successful practitioners in all great cities4 ,they are among the most popular lecturers4 ,at least one of the most successful publishing houses in ,new ,york is owned and managed by a woman4 ,in business and on the platform she has ceased to be a curiosity4 ,the power of woman in politics is not appreciated1 but it is one of the most vital forces of this century4 ,no ,anarchist in ,paris could influence the ,faubourgs quicker than ,louise ,michel4 ,in the history of ,nihilism in ,russia no names have been regarded with more devotion by those struggling for wider liberty1 and none more dreaded by the existing order1 than ,sophie ,perovskaia1 ,jessy ,helfman and ,vera ,zassulic4 ,charles ,dickens never exhibited a truer insight into human nature than when he made a woman the impersonation of remorseless vengeance4 ,but notwithstanding all that women are doing in trades1 industries1 politics1 it still remains that in works of reform1 charity and missions1 she is especially distinguishing herself4 ,two of the largest and most efficient charitable institutions in the world1 viz3 8,the ,deaconesses' ,institution of ,rhenish ,westphalia1 at ,kaiserwent10 and 8,the ,mildmay ,conference ,hall and ,deaconesses' ,home1 in ,london10 are almost exclusively in the hands of women4 ,the influence of these two noble charities reaches around the world1 not only in works of beneficence1 but also in active evangelistic ministry4 ,the first person to call attention to the horrible condition of ,english prisons was ,elizabeth ,fry4 ,the horrors of war were immeasurably mitigated by ,florence ,nightingale4 ,she gave an impetus to the work of training nurses1 which has grown into enthusiasm in all civilized lands4 ,agnes ,jones changed the work-house hospitals of ,great ,britain1 from places of torture into places of blessing4 ,sister ,dora glorified the 8,black ,country0 by her heroism and self-sacrifice4 ,the first person to make practical a good plan for improved tenement houses was ,octavia ,hill4 ,her efforts reach the people which such houses as those built by the ,peabody estate only displace4 ,in this country the most conspicuous effort to improve the low-class of tenement houses has also been made by a woman4 ,the success ,miss ,collins has won in ,gotham ,court is one of the most noticeable in the history of such efforts4 ,the ,bureau of ,charities in ,new ,york is very largely managed by ,mrs4 ,lowell and her devoted co-workers4 ,the ,president of the ,american ,branch of the ,red ,cross ,society1 that non-sectarian1 but most ,christian ,association1 which extends its arms of blessing wherever human suffering is found1 is that ,american ,florence ,nightingale1 whose heroism and sacrifice on ,southern battle-fields can never be too highly appreciated--,clara ,barton4 ,and these are only hints1 here and there1 of woman's work in charity4 ,if now we turn to her service in ,reform we are met1 at once1 by the fact that not even the fiery eloquence of ,phillips1 nor the unconquerable agitations of ,garrison did so much to hasten the abolition of slavery as the persuasion and persuasive eloquence of ,mrs4 ,stowe1 in ,uncle ,tom's ,cabin4 ,people were beguiled into reading that1 who would not have listened to a word from the equally sincere1 but more rampant agitators4 ,after the abolition of slavery there remained that other relic of barbarism1 entrenched in a far more impregnable position1 the rum-power4 ,intemperance has had to meet many who have attacked it in past days1 but never yet an organization so tireless in effort1 so fertile in expedients1 and so exhaustless in resources as the ,women's ,christian ,temperance ,union4 ,that association has made many mistakes1 and is in danger of making many more1 but one of the elements of its power is its willingness to learn4 ,if it cannot fight with one weapon it adopts another4 ,the brewers and distillers have millions of money at their command1 but millions of money are not so formidable as millions of motherly hearts4 ,if now we turn to that other evil1 more subtly and surely ruinous even than intemperance1 impurity and the social evil1 we find a new organization rising with great promise of power1 viz43 ,the ,white ,cross ,society4 ,the aim of that ,association is to promote purity4 ,it reaches out its hands to young men and women alike1 and that work1 in its organized form1 owes its existence to the fertile brain and motherly heart of ,josephine ,butler1 the wife of a canon of an ,english cathedral4 ,if woman works for the salvation of the physical life of her brothers and sisters1 of course she must be equally anxious for the salvation of their souls4 ,woman has an instinct for religion4 ,living a life of greater seclusion than man1 her heart in the silence1 like a flower in the darkness1 has grown toward the light4 ,and this spiritual faculty has found the natural field for its operations in missionary work4 ,the first ,american missionary martyr was ,harriet ,newell4 ,grand as was the life1 and courageous as was the heart of ,adoniram ,judson1 in all that called for heroism and consecration he was surpassed by his first wife1 the beautiful1 the almost preternaturally heroic ,ann ,hasseltine4 ,women preponderate in all the departments of missionary activity4 ,they are in distant lands as teachers1 ,bible-readers1 nurses1 physicians1 missionaries' wives4 ,they go enthusiastically to homes in dug-out houses1 and teach school and rear and train children1 and keep the house1 and do the drudgery1 and then go to heaven1 without complaining of earthly obscurity4 ,they are among the ,indians on their reservations1 and in the ,chinese quarters of the ,pacific cities4 ,but it has sometimes seemed to me that the most difficult and unattractive work for ,christ that woman has ever undertaken1 has been among the millions of blacks in the ,south4 ,the work itself in many instances1 if not all1 has been disagreeable1 if not repulsive4 ,it has been at home1 and has not inspired the enthusiastic admiration which has been given to those who have been in the foreign field4 ,it has been attended with misconception1 social ostracism1 and sometimes with personal danger not found in any other branch of missionary service4 ,but in all parts of the ,south are women at work with no motive but the love of ,christ and humanity1 winning souls by their ,christ-like examples1 and refining the uncultivated and vicious by the sweetness and purity of their unconsciously beautiful lives4 ,woman's work for woman among the blacks of the ,united ,states is the most important of all work for that people4 ,pure women have lessons to teach their own sex who have been degraded by a century of bondage1 or who are the inheritors of the legacies of slavery1 that none others can teach1 and which must be well learned before there can be much progress in the moral amelioration of the race4 ,her enthusiasm1 her swift hostility to the more degrading sins1 her sympathy which bears all the sorrows of those around her1 her intuition of the ,divine ,fatherhood1 and her patience1 qualify woman for kinds of work which most men can never do so well4 ,but there is one thing that men can do--they can remember the ,apostle's injunction1 8,help those women40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indian ,,problem4 ,,address ,,of ,,pres4 ,,julius ,h4 ,,seelye1 ,d4,d41 ,,at ,,new ,,haven4 ,the whole number of ,indians in the ,united ,states1 including ,alaska1 probably is not far from #cjj1jjj1 of whom about one-half now wear citizen's dress1 and about one-fourth speak the ,english language sufficiently to be understood4 ,some of these people are citizens1 and some are wards of the nation4 ,they differ from each other as they differ from us1 in their languages and thoughts and ways4 ,they represent nearly every grade of civilized and savage life4 ,their original rights to a large portion of our national domain we have recognized by purchase and by treaties1 which have plighted the faith of the nation for their protection and support4 ,we certainly desire to live in peace with them1 but with many of them we are in constant danger of war4 ,what shall we do with them and for them8 ,how shall we wisely maintain our rights respecting them1 and at the same time righteously fulfill our obligations8 ,how shall the ,indian cease to disturb us1 and become a blessing to the nation8 ,there is really but one solution to the ,indian problem1 though many have been prominently attempted4 ,we have tried to force the ,indian4 ,we have fought him4 ,we have shut him in upon reservations4 ,we have made a pretence of feeding and clothing him4 ,we have tried our hand at civilization1 have built school-houses1 provided teachers1 and gathered ,indian children together1 and taught them the rudiments of learning4 ,we have furnished them with implements and helps to agriculture1 and some of the mechanic arts4 ,but the results1 it must be admitted1 are not re-assuring4 ,when we fight ,indians1 they fight too1 and their fighting is apt to be1 in proportion to their numbers1 much more successful than ours4 ,in the ,report of the ,commissioner of ,indian ,affairs for #ahfh1 there is an estimate of the expenditure of some late ,indian wars1 from which we learn that it has cost the ,united ,states ,government on an average one million of dollars1 and the lives of twenty-five white men to kill an ,indian4 8,there is no good ,indian but a dead ,indian10 said ,gen4 ,sheridan1 ,lieutenant-general of our army1 but the process of making the ,indians good in this way is at least a costly one1 and the prospect of success can hardly be considered hopeful4 ,it may be doubted whether any ,governmental efforts yet made to subdue or civilize these people have essentially improved either the ,indians themselves or their relations to us4 ,indian wars have not made the ,indians peaceable2 ,indian schools have not civilized them2 ,indian rations and reservations have not satisfied the requirements of even their bodily comfort and sustenance2 and the proposal now made and loudly advocated1 of breaking up all their tribal privileges and allotting the property of the tribe to the members of the tribe in severalty1 while encompassed by grave difficulties from the ignorance of the ,indian and his need of guardianship1 would endanger that sense of common rights and privileges1 that communal relationship1 on which not only the very existence of human society depends1 but in which is the germ of whatever is distinctively human4 ,we are not educated up to our individual rights in spite of our communal relations1 but because of these4 ,i am not speaking here of what ,governmental efforts should have been1 or should now be1 but ,i speak of the actual facts of the past and the present1 and ,i say that the ,governmental procedure thus far1 instead of solving the ,indian problem1 has only increased prodigiously the difficulty of its solution4 ,incidents illustrative of this might be cited by the hour1 but would be impertinent in an audience as intelligent as that here assembled4 ,and yet the solution of the ,indian problem is not a matter of theory or of speculation1 but is an accomplished fact4 ,it has been wrought out before our eyes4 ,wild1 savage ,indian tribes1 as fierce1 as lawless1 as intractable as any now existing1 have been tamed1 have been taught the arts and ways of peace1 have subjected themselves to law1 and are now living in orderly1 peaceable1 industrious communities4 ,the ,cherokees1 and the ,delawares and ,shawnees now united with them1 the ,choctaws1 the ,chickasaws1 the ,creeks1 and the ,seminoles--who are known as the five civilized tribes--now have their constitutions and laws1 their supreme court and their district courts1 their well-arranged public school system1 and 8indeed every provision of law and organization requisite in a ,state founded on the consent of the governed1 controlled by officers chosen by the people1 and suited to an advancing civilization10 7,u4,s4 ,senate ,rep41 ,i43 ,,xvii474 ,pauperism among them is unknown1 and1 by the best reports1 crime is less frequent in proportion to numbers than among the adjoining whites4 ,the ,report of the ,united ,states ,senate ,committee on ,indian ,affairs made to the ,senate ,july #d1 #ahhf1 says of the ,cherokee nation1 that 8it is difficult1 after a searching criticism1 to point out any serious defects in their constitution or statutes4 ,in some respects several of our ,state constitutions could be amended with advantage by adopting some of the provisions of the ,cherokee constitution4 ,their situation1 and that of each of the five tribes1 was full of difficulties1 but they have met them skillfully40 7,i43 ,,xvii47 8,fifty years ago10 in the language of this same report1 8these five nations--now blessed with a ,christian civilization1 in which many thousands are active and intelligent workers1 while the common sentiment of the whole people reverently supports their efforts1 and approves their influence--were pagans40 ,fifty years ago the ,sioux1 now gathered at ,santee and ,sissiton1 in ,christian communities and homes and schools1 with churches enrolled on the same records as those of ,new ,york and ,philadelphia1 in connection with ,presbytery and ,synod and ,general ,assembly1 were savage hordes1 roaming through the ,northwest as wild as the wildest4 ,these savages have been changed4 ,the facts are before our eyes4 ,how was the transformation wrought8 ,the answer is clear4 ,no one can1 no one does1 mistake it4 ,the ,united ,states ,senate ,report1 from which ,i have quoted1 acknowledges these to be the results of ,christian missions4 ,where the ,government has totally failed1 the voluntary efforts of the churches have been crowned with this success4 ,the preaching of the ,gospel has done this work1 and it alone4 ,this ought not to surprise us4 ,it will not surprise any historical student4 ,the same agency by which our ancestors have gained their law and liberty and civilization--who a few centuries ago were savages and cannibals1 offering human sacrifices1 hanging the skulls of their slain enemies in their houses and using them as drinking-cups in their feasts--the same agency by which in our time the cannibals of the ,fijis1 and the cruel tribes of ,madagascar1 have found themselves possessed of a peaceable and progressive civilization1 has broken the darkness and rolled away the shadows from these ,indian tribes1 as quietly1 as peacefully and as gloriously as the coming of the sun has brought in the morning4 ,only the changes which in our ancestors required centuries for their accomplishment1 have been wrought among these ,indians in as many decades4 ,here is the solution of the ,indian problem--the only solution--and here is the work to which we are to gird ourselves afresh4 ,our first great work1 the work which holds in itself all other agencies for ,indian civilization1 as the oak is held in the acorn1 is the preaching of the ,gospel to these people1 the patient1 earnest1 loving presentation to them of the glad tidings that 8,god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten ,son1 that whosoever believeth in ,him should not perish1 but have everlasting life40 ,instruction in letters1 instruction even in virtue is idle without this1 and with this all other instruction follows as flowers open at the sunshine4 ,the great trouble with us1 brethren1 is we are too unbelieving in the efficacy of the ,gospel4 ,we seek to supplement it2 we think it needs other things2 we forget that the ,gospel is1 and that it alone is1 the power of ,god unto salvation1 and we forget1 too1 what a broad term salvation is1 that it covers the godliness which hath the promise of the life that now is1 as well as of that which is to come4 ,the ,gospel of ,christ is the power of ,god unto the salvation of the body1 the salvation of the intellect1 the salvation of manners and customs1 the salvation of society1 and it is this power to every one that believeth1 to the ,jew first1 and also to the ,greek4 ,what wonders it has wrought6 ,what wonders it is working now6 ,how would every difficulty in our social state1 our vice and crime and poverty1 our selfishness and sensuality and woe1 all disappear if the ,gospel only dwelt among us1 a living principle in every heart6 ,we need no other evidence of its divine all-sufficiency than the adaptation it has already shown to every human need1 and we need no other motive to its proclamation than the privilege of being co-worker with ,him1 8,who shall deliver the needy when he crieth1 the poor also1 and him that hath no helper4 ,he shall spare the poor and the needy1 and shall save the soul of the needy4 ,he shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence1 and precious shall their blood be in his sight40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,address ,,of ,,rev4 ,,dr4 ,c4 ,i4 ,,smith ,,at ,,the ,,national ,,council4 ,the ,national the ,congregational churches to the ,zion ,conference meeting in this city in ,may1 #ahhd2 and the second pair did their duty in the other ,conference1 which met the same month in ,baltimore4 ,whereupon the last-named body appointed ,rev4 ,dr4 ,c4 ,i4 ,smith1 ,secretary of its ,sunday-school work1 to respond at the ,chicago ,national ,council4 ,he appeared1 and the following is the substance of his eloquent address3 ,we are all proud of the work which your ,church1 through the ,american ,missionary ,association1 is doing in the ,south4 ,it is impossible to measure the good results growing out of the efforts of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 for the ,christian education of colored youth4 ,through its instrumentalities1 thousands of our youth have been measurably prepared for the successful discharge of the substantial and higher duties of life1 and it must be gratifying to you to learn that most of those are doing life's work well4 ,the leading philanthropists of the ,south regard the colored youth now being educated in your institutions in that section as destined to exert a powerful influence for the conservation of healthy social and moral forces4 ,many of the graduates of your ,southern institutions are the recognized leaders in their respective communities for the advocacy and advancement of every question of social and moral reform4 ,their fidelity to the principles of temperance is remarkable4 ,in the memorable contest at ,atlanta1 ,ga41 none did more valiant work for prohibition than the students of your institution in that city4 ,they are exerting an influence upon the thought and conscience of the ,south that must eventually show itself in favor of maintaining the better life among all classes4 ,i might say that you do not know the amount of good you are doing in the ,south2 for1 if you did1 ,i verily believe that you would try to do more4 ,we do not look upon the ,congregational ,church in the ,south as an unfriendly rival1 but as a stalwart ally in emphasizing the great principle of the brotherhood of man4 ,thus far you have refused to compromise with the spirit of evil by establishing churches and schools on the basis of what is known as the 8color-line40 ,in this refusal you have answered to the highest needs of the hour4 ,unfortunately this cannot be said of all the ,christian societies that are at work in the ,south4 ,color-line churches and schools1 under the patronage of ,christian organizations1 have been established among us4 ,this we greatly deplore1 especially when such proceedings are begun and carried on by ,northern societies4 ,christian churches and schools1 like the gates of heaven1 should be open to all1 and we bitterly regret that anything further should be done to outrage the enlightened ,christian conscience that this century has developed4 ,it is mere mockery to cut off the branches from a tree of evil and leave its roots and trunk untouched4 ,lay the axe to the root of the tree1 and the work of reformation1 though necessarily slow1 will prove substantial and enduring4 ,berea ,college1 in ,kentucky1 has successfully demonstrated that the co-education of the two races is both possible and practicable1 and what it has done all other institutions of learning in the ,south can and should do4 ,in ,nashville1 ,tenn41 we have two great institutions of learning1 ,vanderbilt and ,fisk ,universities2 each gazing upon the other1 yet widely differing as to their influence and aim1 and the age which they represent4 ,vanderbilt represents the age that was and is2 ,fisk the age that is to be--the age when every worthy man shall be to every worthy fellowman a brother4 ,fisk ,university is your child1 and one of which you can justly be proud1 and may you fully nourish and protect it4 ,it is a great light in a dark land--an oasis of living thought in a vast desert of parched and stupid ideas4 ,may its light never diminish nor its fountains cease to flow4 ,through the work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 you have firmly imbedded yourselves in the deepest affections and highest gratitude of the colored people of the ,south4 ,no words can express our gratitude for the firm stand which you have taken in favor of the ,new ,testament idea of human equality4 ,you have made for yourselves a glorious name1 and your work will endure so long as the thought of ,god sways the minds of men4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,well ,,said4 ,,from ,,address ,,of ,,rev4 ,a4 ,g4 ,,haygood1 ,d4,d4 ,but back of the courts there must be educational work4 ,there must be among the people a better sense of essential righteousness4 ,there must be a justice that will not and cannot sentence a poor wretch1 who steals a coat or a piece of bacon for a longer term than the rich man who breaks a bank and robs a thousand people2 that will not and cannot send a poor man without friends or money to prison for a longer term than a rich man with both money and friends who has committed the same offense2 that will not and cannot send a ,negro or a ,chinaman to prison for a longer term than it will send a white man for the same offense4 ,among the people there needs to be developed a better conscience as to the sanctity of an oath1 and the sacred majesty and divine authority of law that knows no conditions of society and no distinctions of race4 ,with such a conscience paramount1 even among the leaders of opinion1 prison reform will be easy4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,notes ,,in ,,the ,,saddle4 ,,by ,,field-,,superintendent ,c4 ,j4 ,,ryder4 ,there is no department of work in the great field which is being developed by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 more thrillingly interesting than that of the mountains of ,kentucky and ,tennessee4 ,a recent trip1 one of several already made through that region1 has greatly increased my appreciation of this work1 and confidence in the grand success which is even now opening before us4 ,i have just been over the ground covered by our missionary work and have been impressed with the vast opportunities1 as well as the imperative needs which exist on every hand in this mountain region4 ,let us go over that field together4 ,new and strange phases of life meet us at every turn4 ,we enter the mountain regions of ,kentucky in which the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 has schools and churches1 a few miles north of ,knoxville4 ,indeed the first station of the ,kentucky missions is in ,tennessee4 ,this part of the work is under the direction of ,rev4 ,a4 ,a4 ,myers4 ,this region has only recently been opened to the outside world4 ,coal fields are abundant1 and timber of the very best kinds still stands in vast forests on the hillsides and along the streams4 ,these trees shoulder against each other like an army of giants marshalled to defend the wild freedom of their mountain home against the impertinent intrusion of the 8humans10 as the mountaineers call men4 ,these brave defenders1 however1 are fast falling beneath the axe of the lumberman4 ,in the yard of a single mill1 seven million five hundred thousand feet of walnut timber was piled ready for the market4 ,this same mill cuts on an average ten million feet of lumber1 of all kinds1 in a week4 ,a rough1 but interesting mountaineer1 who sat near me in the freight caboose1 in which ,i rode from ,knoxville northward into the mountain region1 told me that he kept eight yoke of cattle at work all the time in bringing lumber from the 8benches0 on the sides of the mountains to the 8slides40 ,these benches are small plains1 or miniature plateaus upon which the larger forests grow1 as the soil is deeper and richer1 being formed from the wash of the mountains above4 ,they draw the logs to the edges of these benches and let them over the slides1 down which they dart1 as the arrow flies from the string of a bow4 ,it is in this country1 so rich in mineral and timbered wealth1 that a large part of the mountain work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 lies4 ,the vast army of men crowding into this region to gather its wonderful wealth1 makes still more imperative the necessity for ,christian work here immediately4 ,a new railroad is pushing its way from ,corbin through ,barboursville1 and pointing toward ,cumberland ,gap1 through which it will probably pass out into ,virginia4 ,the whistle of the locomotive is the reveille awakening other thousands to the possibilities of this region1 and bringing them together here4 ,you see1 therefore1 that this field claims our attention and our help1 just as every new region of the ,west does1 as it is rapidly filling up through emigration from other parts of our own country and from other lands4 ,there are also the communities of mountaineers1 for whom these churches and schools were planted1 who have a claim upon us4 ,within a few years1 hundreds of coal mines will pour out their black streams along the railroads1 many of which are as yet unbuilt4 ,furnace fires will light up the darkness of the night along the hillsides4 ,these small towns will be great centers of commercial and industrial importance4 ,such is the country1 and such are the circumstances1 surrounding the work here4 8,what has actually been done80 you ask1 and it is a very natural question4 ,nine churches have been organized1 and are doing faithful work for the ,master in this region4 ,four schools have been wholly or partially supported by the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 for some time1 and their influence is felt far and wide4 ,in the ,williamsburgh ,academy1 between one and two hundred bright1 earnest young people gathered in the chapel for the opening exercises of the school4 ,these scholars range in their studies from first primary to higher normal4 ,many teachers from other schools come here to complete their otherwise imperfect preparation for their work4 ,the work of the academy is not that of intellectual training1 with a little religion tacked on to make it palatable with ,christian people2 it is ,christian training which the pupils receive here4 ,i rode with ,brother ,myers forty-four miles on horseback1 much of the way through a driving rain-storm1 to visit some stations which we could not conveniently reach by rail4 ,at ,corbin1 which is to be the junction of the new railroad with the present railroad1 we have a beautiful site for a church building--some lumber already on the ground--and we ought to push the building to completion at once4 ,people came out from their cabins along the roadside as we rode past1 and eagerly asked3 8,when are you coming to take up a meeting with us again80 ,children especially crowded around our horses when we stopped1 to inquire about the ,sunday-school1 to get a pleasant word from ,bro4 ,myers1 which he never failed to give1 and to receive some little paper1 or brightly colored card with a ,scripture gem upon it4 ,his pockets seemed to be always full of these children's traps4 ,there are four church buildings ready to be dedicated1 and two pastors1 native mountaineers1 one a graduate of ,berea ,college1 awaiting ordination4 ,and so the work moves on in a wonderful way1 for it is ,god's way4 ,this is only one part of the work which the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is pressing forward in these mountain regions4 ,i had hoped to have space to speak of the work in ,scott and ,morgan and ,cumberland ,counties1 ,tenn41 but cannot now4 ,the large academy building at ,mount ,pleasant1 ,tenn41 of which our readers of ,,the ,,american ,,missionary have heard an occasional word1 is already completed1 and will be ready for dedication in a few weeks4 ,it is a grand building1 a cause of wonderment to the simple mountain people1 who ride for tens of miles to see it4 ,i shall speak of it more at length hereafter4 ,this school and church work is like the rising of the sun of a brighter and better day over this ,cumberland plateau4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,contrast4 ,,by ,a ,,teacher4 ,it was twelve o'clock of a hot ,may day in the noisy ,southern city4 ,out upon the scorching sidewalk it seemed almost impossible to escape the remorseless heat of the sun1 and so ,i turned gladly down the narrow alleyway and climbed the rickety stairs of an old building at its end4 ,in a little low room at the top1 through whose small windows very few breezes could find their way1 were the old man and woman for whom ,i was seeking4 ,the room itself was so gloomy that ,i tried to forget both heat and weariness1 and put all of cheerfulness possible into my voice as ,i bade them 8good morning0 and inquired after their health4 ,it seemed a relief to the poor old woman to tell me of her own pain and her husband's failing mind1 and so ,i let her talk on1 suggesting occasionally little things which might make them more comfortable1 and promising aid where that was best4 ,gradually we came to talk of other things1 and then ,i spoke of ,god and asked her if they loved him4 ,she shook her head sadly and answered1 8,no1 we are two poor old sinners together10 while the old man1 hearing that name which to so many brings joy and peace1 muttered over and over1 8,no hope1 no hope2 ,i've sinned away my day of grace40 ,for a moment my heart failed me1 but1 after a quick prayer for help1 ,i tried to tell them the 8old1 old story0 so simply that the truth could reach their darkened minds4 ,over and over ,i repeated ,christ's own words1 8,him that cometh unto ,me ,i will in no wise cast out10 and then we knelt and asked the dear ,father who loves all to help them4 ,saying 8good bye0 to them and promising soon to come again1 ,i descended the stair and knocked at the door of the son's room1 which stood wide open4 ,i was invited into the not very tidy room by a pretty-looking woman with her head tightly bandaged with a handkerchief4 ,on inquiring her trouble she told me she was suffering from nervous headache1 and1 as ,i know something of that1 ,i was able to suggest remedies which she said were effective4 ,on the bed in the corner1 stretched out at full length1 lay her husband4 ,the faithful wife said he was sick1 but to me he looked lazy4 ,we talked together of many things1 and ,i found that neither this husband or wife were ,christians1 though she seemed very anxious to know the way4 ,i read to them from that blessed word1 the word of which ,god ,himself said1 8,it shall not return unto me void1 but shall accomplish that whereunto it is sent10 and with a little word of prayer left them1 glad in my faith in ,god's transforming power4 ,it was two o'clock when ,i reached home1 and ,i had only time for a lunch and a short resting spell before starting to make another call1 which proved to be full of pleasantness and encouragement4 ,my friend and ,i were piloted on this trip by a dark-eyed1 but fair-skinned girl1 who was a pupil of our school4 ,we rode as far as the street car would carry us1 and then walked through country paths and fields until we reached her home4 ,it was a luxury to rest in the easy rocking-chair in the pleasant little parlor1 while fresh country breezes rustled the simple white curtains at the windows4 ,and when1 in addition to the pleasant words of greeting1 clear water was brought us from the well1 and large1 sweet berries from the garden1 we felt that our welcome was complete4 ,after visiting for a little time1 we were asked by the children if we didn't want to see the farm1 and following them out found that the farm1 though not large1 was carefully cultivated1 and that the peas1 beans1 potatoes1 cabbages and other vegetables which grew there1 found a ready market in the great city4 ,i have heard and seen much of the thriftlessness of the ,south1 but here at least was thrift and prosperity4 ,coming back to the house we were introduced to the father1 a dark-browed but fine-looking man1 who by honest toil is trying to support his family1 and give to his children the opportunities which shall make of them good men and women4 ,these children are sent to the ,sunday-school and day-school regularly4 ,can we doubt that from these they shall gain that which shall make them a blessing to their race and to the world8 ,against the dark background of thriftlessness and ignorance and poverty which we find among the colored people1 such homes as these stand out in bright relief1 and they should be a source of encouragement to all who are trying to do ,god's work in the world4 ,and so1 dear friends1 ,i have told you of these homes1 that seeing the difference and what may be accomplished in all these homes by ,christian education1 you may not grow weary1 but may look forward to that harvest-time when the seed which your prayers and gifts have sown shall spring up and bear fruit even an hundredfold4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,bureau ,,of ,,woman',s ,,work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,annual ,,report4 ,,by ,,miss ,d4 ,e4 ,,emerson1 ,,secretary4 ,it is apparent to any who study the character of the field of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 that not only is there ample opportunity for women to work1 but that it becomes a necessity to the successful accomplishment of the good designed4 ,as well might we say to the impoverished1 8,be ye warmed and filled10 giving none of those things needful to the body1 as to provide churches and schools for the degraded and destitute1 without supplying those influences which will permeate and mould the homes1 in the arousing and uplifting of the women from their condition of ignorance and indifference4 ,yet to secure this1 we do not need a distinct and separate class of missionaries4 ,the work is combined1 and so it is that the schools of the ,american ,missionary ,association include other lines of instruction than those usually involved--instruction pertaining to home life1 given to the youth in the school-room and to the parents in the cabins2 and the teachers become missionaries4 ,selecting these according to the need of the field1 it results that a large number of those employed are women--#bcf having been engaged in this missionary service during the past year4 ,what part has the ,bureau of ,woman's ,work had in this8 ,just so large a part and so helpful as the ,christian women of the ,north have permitted2 and we rejoice to record an advance both in interest and in contributions4 ,in addition to the donations by women to the general work of the ,association1 twenty-six of these missionary teachers have been sustained by funds raised in ,ladies' and ,children's ,missionary ,societies of our ,congregational churches1 or by special collection4 ,in every instance the contributors have been put into correspondence with their missionary representative through the system of monthly letters direct from the field1 and thus a better knowledge of the work has been obtained4 ,these missionary letters have proved an effective agency in imparting information and increasing interest1 as many have testified1 and one letter per month serves as report to the ,association and also to contributors4 ,is it not reasonable that the excess of letter-writing by teachers should be thus relieved1 since their time is so valuable to the needy people about them8 ,referring to her large correspondence1 one of our faithful missionaries writes3 8,if for all the help we receive in our work so much is required1 we shall have but little time for anything else40 ,let us reduce all this writing to one letter per month and use each such letter for its full worth1 by free circulation4 ,desiring to interest children and youth1 that they may become familiar with the ,american ,missionary ,association and its work1 and contribute habitually to its support1 we have selected a 8,children's ,missionary0 to write especially for little children in mission bands and ,sunday-schools1 and one who will write also for the young people1 both boys and girls1 that they may early imbibe a missionary spirit1 in consecration of money and of personal service4 ,a collecting card1 called 8,the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 #8,true ,blue' ,card10 has been prepared as an aid in raising money1 and this card will be furnished to all who wish the missionary letters4 ,during the year the ,woman's ,bureau has been given direct representation by its ,secretary at the meetings of the ladies in their ,state ,unions1 and in connection with ,state ,conferences ,east and ,west1 thereby establishing an acquaintance and confidence of exceeding value1 while giving more full intelligence of this great mission field4 ,this has helped to develop the plan for the ladies of any one church or association of churches to take some definite part in aiding the ,american ,missionary ,association to carry forward its work4 ,the suggestion has been cordially acted upon1 and with good results4 ,maine1 ,vermont1 ,connecticut1 ,new ,york1 ,ohio1 ,illinois1 ,iowa1 ,minnesota and ,wisconsin now have each their special schools or missionaries under the ,american ,missionary ,association1 with whom they have communication through the ,bureau of ,woman's ,work4 ,massachusetts1 ,new ,hampshire and ,michigan are beginning to respond to this call1 and we are led to hope that we shall have from each of these ,states also the help found in concentration and union1 thus making twelve ,states in which this work is hopefully begun4 ,in this plan for woman's work in definite lines1 it is not our purpose to divert funds from the usual church contributions4 ,there would be nothing lost in this1 but neither would there be anything gained4 ,what the ,american ,missionary ,association needs is more help than it has hitherto received1 and that without diminishing the usual church contributions the ladies will by special measures make a cash contribution annually in the support of teachers4 ,in order to secure the results of the work in schools and homes1 prompt action is taken in the establishment of preaching missions and churches1 thus requiring a constant advance4 ,it is for this reason1 ladies1 that we urge upon your attention the fact that a portion of the field is peculiarly yours4 ,if you will do your part1 the advance can be made4 ,look in upon a single mission station4 ,a group of three buildings attracts our attention as a bit of ,new ,england transplanted1 a church1 a good-sized school-house1 and between the two a neat white painted cottage4 ,the missionaries number four1 of whom three are ladies from the ,north4 ,over #bjj children and youth come daily to the school1 where these missionary teachers instruct in branches usual in primary to grammar grades1 and also in ,christian morals and manners1 with the ,bible for a text-book1 seeking earnestly to develop heart1 mind and body to honor and righteousness4 ,the little ,new ,england home gives practical illustration of what otherwise would be but dimly comprehended by those who have never known a home4 ,it is open1 day and evening1 to all who will come4 ,the morning devotions1 the pleasant social meals1 the group around the table in the evening1 which the older pupils often join1 are phases of home life sharply in contrast to the shiftless1 joyless homes about them4 ,with the influence of this home as a starting-point1 these teachers1 in visiting from house to house1 suggest1 advise1 encourage1 finding always the children the most ambitious to improve and make the little cabin like the teacher's home4 ,you would think this sufficient to occupy these three ladies1 and so doubtless they would were it not for the dire need about them4 ,so time is found for a sewing-school1 for meetings with the women1 for temperance societies1 for mission ,sunday-schools1 and numerous other forms of systematic work--for the purifying of the home life1 and to guard the children from the fate of the parents4 ,who but women could win an entrance into such homes and hearts8 ,it is to counteract the ignorance and desolation of womanhood that woman's help is needed in this broad field4 ,but is it more the duty of these to go and teach1 than for us who remain in the enjoyment of our great home privileges1 to send them8 ,can any lines be drawn in the personal responsibility resting upon us as ,christian women1 for the redemption of womanhood in these so long cast out and bound down8 ,help is needed1 and it is needed now1 before the millions of children grow out of our influence and reach1 to become like their parents1 and even a more dangerous element in society4 ,how shall the help be given8 ,every church is an organization which bands together ,christian workers4 ,the nearer all can come to the very heart of the great societies appointed to the work of missions1 the stronger and warmer are the missionary pulsations4 ,here is the ,american ,missionary ,association1 with its forty years' experience in church and school planting1 combined with woman's work4 ,it has every facility for examining the field and selecting central points with view to the largest results1 and it invites and urges your co-operation through its ,bureau of ,woman's ,work1 which is prepared to furnish information and to put you into direct communication with the missionaries4 ,with your own heart full of this need1 try so to lay the case before others that they1 too1 may feel it1 and constitute yourselves a church mission band1 to raise money to aid the ,american ,missionary ,association in carrying on its work in the ,south1 and for the ,chinese and ,indians4 ,thus can the ladies of every church take part with us in overcoming ignorance1 superstition and caste prejudice in behalf of womanhood in this our land4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,work ,,among ,,the ,,freedmen4 ,,by ,,miss ,,bertha ,,robertson4 ,dear ,friends3--,it gives me much pleasure to bring you a report1 which will not be a discouraging one1 of a part of the work this grand old ,american ,missionary ,association has undertaken4 ,it would be simply impossible to give you a true idea of the work done among the colored people4 ,already you have heard many accounts1 but to fully realize what is being done1 you must either see the people over whom the influence of our schools extends1 and compare them with those who have not enjoyed such privileges1 or enter the field as a worker4 ,in giving an outline of our work at ,mc,intosh1 ,ga41 perhaps a general idea may be gained of what the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is doing for the freedmen4 ,the colored people where we are1 and ,i think it is the same throughout the ,south1 have an idea their teachers can do anything from housekeeping to preaching a sermon or mending clocks1 but before we should be allowed to undertake similar work in the ,north1 it would be necessary that we should have ,m4,d41 ,d4,d41 or some other initials after our names4 ,we teach school4 ,this does not mean exactly what it does in the ,north4 ,you must remember1 when the children come to us1 they have had no home training whatever4 ,you can imagine something of their condition1 when you remember that the majority come from miserable log cabins1 consisting of one room1 where parents and children live huddled together1 and where the furniture is a mere apology1 consisting generally of a table1 bench and two chairs4 ,they have no hopes and ambition such as white children have4 ,they never think of the possibilities the future may hold for them4 ,when we ask our boys and girls what they are going to do when they leave school1 they look at us in blank amazement4 ,this is a new idea to them2 they had not looked beyond the present4 ,their standard of morality is low4 ,did you expect anything else8 ,who were the parents of these children8 ,slaves4 ,slaves who in return for hard labor received from the white man the cruelest wrongs and basest indignities2 and yet people to-day speak as though this first generation born in freedom should be pure and virtuous4 ,on every side you hear1 8,they lie1 they cheat1 they steal1 are lazy1 and it is simply impossible to do anything with them40 ,many times this summer ,i have heard this sweeping assertion made1 and by ,christian people1 who had simply traveled ,south1 and who drew their conclusions from the servants they met in the hotels4 ,had they visited some of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools their statement would not have been quite so extended as to the impossibilities of improvement4 ,the ,bible is the foundation of all our teaching4 ,religious and moral training first4 ,a half hour each morning is given to devotions4 ,friday morning the school all meet together for prayer1 in which our pupils take part4 ,we have been greatly blessed in these meetings4 ,friday afternoon the girls all meet in one room1 and while they are taught sewing1 the ,principal of the school gives the boys a talk on morality1 in another room4 ,we visit the pupils in their homes1 and they1 with their parents1 feel at liberty to come to our cottage at any time4 ,it is with much pleasure we note the improvement in their cabins and the taste the girls display in trying to make their homes resemble our cottage4 ,after school every ,friday afternoon1 we have a missionary meeting for the mothers4 ,here1 while they sew1 simple religious stories are read to them1 and before they go home we have a ,bible reading and prayers4 ,three years ago this society sent ten dollars to the ,morning ,star1 and for the past two years they have sent fifteen dollars to the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 for the ,indians4 ,they are trying to do a little for the ,master's ,kingdom4 ,besides these meetings1 we have ,sunday-school and mission-school1 and on ,saturdays we go to settlements six or eight miles distant to hold mothers' meetings4 ,many a poor soul in these meetings has heard for the first time the blessed news of personal salvation4 ,i know1 dear friends1 that what ,i have already said is not new to you2 you have heard it many times and are anxious to know if any progress is noticeable4 ,i wish1 oh1 how ,i wish1 ,i could tell you of the progress they are making4 ,how they are working under cast-iron laws to pay for their land and get little frame houses4 ,people tell me1 in a general way1 that they are lazy and there is no hope for them2 but ,i know them to get up at 8day clear0 and work until sundown to pay for their land under conditions that would discourage nine white men out of every ten4 ,i could name a dozen families around us who have their land paid for1 and nice little homes4 ,the children come to school1 their tuition is paid regularly and their books are provided as soon as needed4 ,are they progressing8 ,for an answer ,i would like to show you the nice little two-story frame building in which two of our pupils who were married last winter live4 ,on the lower floor is the parlor1 dining-room and kitchen2 above are the chambers4 ,the pretty chamber set1 white spread and pillow-shams1 were purchased with the money ,sarah earned off her cotton patch4 ,people say they are dull and stupid4 ,yet children ten years old will criticise letters received by their parents1 and in two and a half years we can fit a boy for the second preparatory year in college4 ,he works his own way1 pays for his books1 and at the end of a year has enough to pay his traveling expenses home1 and when his teacher asks him if there is anything he needs1 he replies1 8,oh1 no2 can't ,i do something for you80 ,people say1 8,you can't trust them40 ,yet ,i know of one of my little girls on sewing afternoon1 when almost home1 returning with a needle that somehow got stuck in her dress2 and ,i have never missed a pencil or book out of my desk1 on which there is no lock1 during the years ,i have spent in ,mc,intosh4 ,how often you are told they are ungrateful1 and do not appreciate what you are doing for them4 ,once and forever this idea would be banished from your minds could you be present at our meetings1 and hear the fervent1 heartfelt prayers of both young and old that ,god will pour out his richest blessings on this ,association and the friends who uphold it4 ,it has also been said they do not care to be educated1 they would just as soon remain as they are4 ,we have many pupils in our room who walk sixteen miles every day1 and who do a task before leaving home in the morning1 and another when they return at night4 ,one of my boys1 ,josiah ,roberts1 walked this distance every day last year with the exception of two1 making a total of #b1bej miles during the school year1 and was not tardy one morning4 ,can any other school show such a record8 ,among the colored people great stress is laid upon 8joining the church40 ,this is one of the evils against which we have to fight4 ,it is the only idea many of them have of what it is to be a ,christian4 ,one day1 when returning home from making a call on ,aunt ,judy1 the minister's wife called me1 saying the girls wished to see me4 ,she has a number of girls from 8up country10 who board with her and attend our school4 ,i followed her into the room where they were1 and said1 on entering1 8,well1 girls1 what is troubling you80 ,there was silence for a moment2 then one bright girl looked up saying1 8,oh1 ,miss ,robertson1 won't you tell us what to do8 ,we thought we were ,christians1 we belong to the church1 but we are beginning to find out that that isn't enough4 ,we are not living for ,christ4 ,won't you tell us how to be such ,christians as our teachers are80 ,with a short prayer for help1 ,i pointed them to the ,divine ,example1 and during the remaining days of school we had proof that they were imitating ,him4 ,those girls went out into various parts of the country this summer to teach1 carrying ,jesus with them4 ,who can estimate the good they will do8 ,every ,tuesday and ,thursday evening at the cabins the people hold neighborhood meetings4 ,desiring very much to see how these were conducted1 ,i started out one evening with one of my girls4 ,after walking about a mile through the woods we reached the cabin1 which was crowded with dusky faces4 ,as ,i entered1 room was made for me at one side of the fire-place1 in which was a crackling fire of pine knots4 ,they asked me to read to them1 so ,i opened my ,bible to the ,,ciii4 ,psalm4 ,how eagerly and attentively they listened as it was read and explained4 ,then each one took part1 either singing or praying4 ,then together they began to sing their old slave songs1 keeping time by clapping and shaking hands1 bobbing their heads and scraping their feet4 ,every part of the body seemed in motion4 ,as ,i watched the strange scene1 ,i thought1 8,will this form of worship die out with the old slaves1 or will it be continued by our young people80 ,i turned at that moment to look at my companion4 ,a woman had just stepped up to her saying1 8,why don't you shake hands80 8,because ,i see no sense in it10 was the reply4 ,on our way home she inquired of me if ,i did not think the last part of that meeting was more like a frolic than praising ,god8 ,how rejoiced ,i was to hear that young girl express herself in such a manner4 ,truly1 8,our labor is not in vain in the ,lord40 ,dear friends1 ,i would not give you the impression that there are no discouragements in our work1 for there are many4 ,it is with heavy hearts we oftentimes watch some of our scholars returning to their homes in the evening1 for we know that there everything tends to overthrow the religious teaching received during the day4 ,girls going home to mothers who have no sense of purity and virtue1 and who cannot realize the degradation of their lives4 ,sometimes those the most promising1 those for whom we have entertained bright hopes for the future1 fail us1 and we are almost constrained to cry out1 8,this is greater than ,i can bear40 ,but ,he1 whose promises never fail1 has shown us that the seed sown in tears will surely bring a harvest1 and the encouragements1 together with the joy of being in ,his service1 outweigh the discouragements4 ,i could tell you of young men who have come to our school addicted to drink1 using profane language and tobacco1 who to-day are earnest1 faithful ,christians1 the hope of our school4 ,we gladly would keep them1 yet we bid them 8,god speed10 as this year they go to ,atlanta ,university4 ,i could tell you of young girls who1 out of the wickedness and immorality around them1 have grown up pure1 consecrated ,christian women1 doing what they can for the ,master they have promised to serve4 ,such is the work the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 is doing throughout the ,south4 ,is there anyone who can afford not to have a part in this glorious work8 ,think of the privilege of being permitted to help lift these souls1 born in ignorance and vice1 into the marvellous light of the gospel of ,jesus ,christ4 ,last year1 for want of room and help1 we had to turn many away from our doors1 and that means sending them back into the wickedness and ignorance from which they desired to rise4 ,when ,i take up the ,,american ,,missionary ,,magazine and read therein the appeals for help1 the feeling that comes over me is not unmixed with indignation1 for in ,god's precious word ,i read1 8,if ,i were hungry ,i would not tell thee1 for the earth is mine and the fulness thereof20 and again1 8,the silver is mine and the gold is mine1 saith the ,lord of hosts20 and yet the stewards to whom ,he has entrusted this vast fortune do not allow ,him enough to carry on ,his work4 ,i heard the remark1 not long ago1 8,when money is needed you can't compensate with prayer40 ,faith and works must go hand in hand4 ,shall not the treasury this year be full to overflowing so that 8the barnacles may be cleared off this old ship10 and there be nothing to impede her progress8 ,won't you multiply your prayers for the work and workers1 so that this year may be the most prosperous1 so that we may indeed 8have souls for our hire06 99 99 99 99 99 ,,work ,,among ,,the ,,indians4 ,,by ,,miss ,h4 ,b4 ,,ilsley4 ,six years of life among the ,dakotas has taught me many things4 ,very plainly ,i recall the first glimpse of their homes1 as1 ,october #ast1 #ahhj1 ,i wended my way1 the sole occupant of the stage1 between ,yankton and ,yankton ,agency1 ,dakota--a distance of #fe miles1 to the home of ,rev4 ,mr4 ,williamson4 ,home warnings were still ringing in my ears--for1 had ,i not been told1 8,you are doing a foolish thing1 seeking only adventure1 spending your strength for naught2 ,indians can't be educated2 you will live in one common room with only a sheet partition1 and you will have only a penny candle for your evening luminary1 and the ,indians may scalp you40 ,i saw the tents1 ,i saw the one-room log houses1 and ,i met blanket ,indians face to face in paint1 bells and feathers4 ,home warnings came vividly before me as possible realities4 ,but in a moment the hearty welcome of ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,williamson1 and their children too1 changed my thoughts4 ,the cheerful sitting room itself had a welcome1 and home letters were there to greet me1 which uttered no more warnings1 neither have ,i thought of them since1 except as fund for amusement4 ,this was my introduction to life on a reservation4 ,from among varied experiences1 ,i would like first to take you on a recent trip with me1 to some of the homes of the ,dakotas scattered along the ,missouri and its tributaries1 in our ,oahe field4 ,there are now a number of stations1 varying from five to fifteen miles apart1 where native teachers are at work2 they having been prepared for this at our schools in the past4 ,there are day-schools of between twenty and thirty pupils each4 ,the teachers have religious services on the ,sabbath1 and also visit among the people1 becoming acquainted with each man1 woman and child4 ,at one of these stations1 ,cherry ,creek1 the ,indians have been associated with ,sitting ,bull1 and it is of their homes ,i wish to speak as types of the field when taking the first steps toward civilization4 ,log houses of one room1 with the earth only for a floor2 bedsteads of planks loosely laid on wooden posts about a foot high from the ground4 ,these serve also for chairs in the daytime4 ,a cook stove is found in the center of each room and this is all4 ,on the log wall hangs the coffee pot1 the iron kettle and their extra coats and dresses 7if they have any74 ,they still keep their tents and use them in summer1 which adds greatly to their comfort4 ,at most places the women were working industriously2 some embroidering with porcupine quills1 some preparing corn for drying by braiding the husks into a rope1 leaving the various colored ears hanging2 others were pounding between stones their native fruits1 which they dry and preserve for winter use4 ,a few men were building their log houses and plastering the crevices with earth2 some were at work in their fields1 and many sat with their friends smoking and telling entertaining stories4 ,the religious influences at these homes are foreign to ours1 of course1 but there is an influence4 ,the ,dakotas worship all nature4 ,they pray to the spirits of heaven and earth2 to the winds1 the sun1 the moon1 the stones1 and for fear something should be left out--it is summed up in the great mystery--the ,great ,spirit4 ,all trouble and even sickness comes from evil spirits1 hence the young never want to care for the sick1 and do not dare for fear they shall be visited with disease too4 ,near the tipi of one of the women we noticed a large new tent2 and we asked1 8,whose is this80 8,my tipi wakan10 7holy house7 she replied4 8,may we enter80 8,oh1 no1 we do not allow white people there40 8,but10 says my companion1 ,miss ,collins1 8they always allow me40 8,do they8 well1 come40 ,she led the way inside and told us the following incident3 ,her son1 a boy of thirteen1 had died2 and during his sickness all the relatives had promised to make a certain number of gifts1 to be finished at a set time after his death4 ,the tent was very large1 and half way around on the inside were several rows of ,indian travelling cases1 which held the gifts4 ,the mother opened one of these and showed us her offerings3 moccasins1 leggins1 tobacco pouches1 pipes and many articles for which ,i knew no name4 ,all of them were beautifully embroidered1 and she had handled them so carefully that the deerskin of which they were made was spotlessly clean4 ,this poor sorrowing mother had worked so diligently that her wrist was very lame1 but she was being doctored by one of their medicine men1 and hoped soon to finish all she had promised4 8,my son has counted every one of these gifts10 she said1 8and when the time comes we will call a feast1 and our sacred men will say prayers1 and we shall give these gifts away4 ,this will please my son and he will pray for us40 ,so she hoped to merit blessings for herself and others4 ,do we not hope that the dear ,lord may soon grant this faithful woman a revelation of ,himself8 ,before leaving this view of ,indian life1 let me give you a glimpse of our other station1 ,fort ,berthold1 through a recent letter from ,mrs4 ,hall1 formerly ,miss ,webb1 of ,santee4 ,she writes3 8,you have no idea1 and ,i cannot begin to realize1 the depths of heathenism and degradation which surround us4 ,it is only a little walk to the village1 and strange sounds come from there all through the nights4 ,there is dancing and all sorts of wickedness going on4 ,i wish our ,agent would use his power to put a stop to such things4 ,i have had my first women's meeting4 ,my plan is this3 to have a circle composed of the mothers of our boys and girls1 or1 if they have no mothers1 the woman nearest to them4 ,my first meeting consisted of five4 ,one of them could speak ,dakota so ,i was able to reach her a little4 ,she was an interesting1 bright woman1 but oh6 so dirty6 ,i was wonderfully drawn to her and also to one of her little girls4 ,here was an opportunity to use my ,dakota ,bible1 which ,i was so glad to improve4 ,now ,i am surrounded by ,rees and ,gros ,ventres1 ,i feel the barrier of language exceedingly4 ,the ,rees are around us mostly4 ,the ,gros ,ventres have taken their farms twenty1 thirty1 or forty miles away4 ,here will be such a field for some of our boys4 ,who will be the devoted1 consecrated worker8 ,i feel all we can do now is to pray2 and ,i am sure ,god will hear and answer40 ,having tried to picture to you our people in their own homes1 in parts of the ,oahe and ,fort ,berthold fields1 turn with me now to our ,santee school1 and the record of its boys and girls4 ,some of these not long since came from similar homes2 others are the children of ,christian parents and grandparents1 and do not know of the native beliefs and customs1 except as they are told4 ,we have representatives from ten different tribes1 five tribes 7and the larger part7 belonging to the ,sioux or ,dakota ,nation1 the remaining five belonging to the ,rees1 ,mandans1 ,gros ,ventres1 ,arapahoes and ,poncas4 ,the whole number of different pupils last year was #baj4 ,this shows a steady increase4 ,they have continued in larger numbers through the year1 and those from a distance have enjoyed attending the summer sessions of school4 ,there has been marked progress in their studies and deportment2 especially in deportment1 for those who used to be so painfully shy1 and their voices so faint one must strain the ear to listen1 can now1 with their acquired knowledge of spoken ,english1 look you confidently in the face and respond with distinct voices4 ,the brightening of the eye and whole countenance makes you sure of the bond of friendship established between teacher and pupil1 which gives always a promise of success4 ,in the homes1 in the shops 7of which there are three--blacksmith1 carpenter and shoe shop71 on the farm and at school1 many through the year have given very satisfactory service4 ,while ,i would not claim for any1 perfection of conduct1 yet in simple justice to their efforts ,i do say1 they have tried faithfully to do well what they have attempted1 and have succeeded1 and so have won the esteem of their teachers in the several departments4 ,the studies are as yet mostly elementary4 ,the ,bible in ,dakota and in ,english has always had a prominent place1 in order that the young men and women may be fitted for religious work among their people4 ,we would never lose sight of the fact that the first and highest aim is to form a ,christian character that shall go with its influence into their homes and be felt4 ,it is no plan of ,santee to isolate the child from the parent1 but rather through the child to influence the parent and all home life4 ,where there is such strong family affection1 there is a proportionately strong hope that the greater and larger good can be accomplished in this way4 ,through the past year there has been an awakening to the claims of their own people upon our pupils as never before4 ,they express desires such as these3 8,i want to help my people40 8,i go alone on the hill and cry to ,god to bless and save my people40 8,pray for my people that they may all be ,christians40 ,surely ,god's spirit is with them4 ,during our summer vacation we receive letters from those at home1 which give a little insight into their life when they return to old surroundings4 ,one young girl writes1 8,there are some new ,indians here4 ,they have their old ways yet1 and ,i am afraid of them and very careful with them4 ,no ,sunday-school1 no church and no prayer to-day is just dreadful to me4 ,remember us in your prayers that we may be able to resist temptation40 ,quoting from a letter from one of the young men1 8,the people here asked me to go to grass dance1 but ,i said #8,i don't know how to dance now4' ,they have dance every ,sunday4 ,and the white man1 he always took some picture on ,sunday4 ,you think he doing right8 ,i think they don't know how to walk to the church4 ,i know what makes those white men not want to go to church4 ,they didn't like to hear the truth and doing in the right way that ,jesus wants all people to do40 ,do not such words as these show that the good seed is taking deep root8 ,our organized ,christian work embraces three missionary societies and a ,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a4 ,the ,society of ,native ,women holds weekly meetings for prayer and sewing4 ,their homes are far apart and but few can attend at once2 yet some one is always ready to welcome the ,society and prepare herself to lead the prayer-meeting4 ,they have raised during the year #gd4be4 ,the girls of the ,dakota ,home organized a separate society1 ,october1 #ahhe1 with an average attendance of thirty4 ,they raised from ,september to ,july about #ab4 ,this was done by small weekly offerings1 and by the sale of useful and fancy articles at the close of school4 ,the little girls of the ,birds' ,nest have also had their society of seventeen members1 varying in age from six to twelve years4 ,by little services they have earned #a4bj1 and a gift of #b from a gentleman has enabled them to report #c4bj at the ,annual ,dakota ,meeting in ,september4 ,the ,secretary of the ,y4 ,m4 ,c4 ,a4 handed me his report1 from which ,i quote as follows3 8,our year's work was quite profitable4 ,we had at first nineteen members4 ,our work was to bring young men to our meetings1 and we appointed four for that special work1 though it is the work of us all4 ,we appointed four others to go in different homes and have prayer with those who are not church members2 four to visit the sick and find out needs1 to help them4 ,our contribution was rather small1 though it is the best we can do2 this year #dc4af4 ,out of that1 #be4hj goes to help our native missionary account2 the remainder is for helping delegates to different meetings4 ,there were twenty-five new members this year1 most all associate members1 leaving only fourteen active members1 but ,god has blessed us in many ways40 ,in conclusion1 ,i think ,i speak the minds of all the teachers at ,oahe1 at ,fort ,berthold and at ,santee1 when ,i say we feel much encouraged in this our work for the ,dakotas and other ,indians4 ,god does bless our efforts1 and the hearts of the young are being won to his service4 ,we know it is your work1 too4 ,we ask you still to strengthen our hands and hearts in the future4 ,we need your interest and your prayers4 ,we need your hearts with us constantly1 that we may be able to do better and greater things4 ,it is a privilege to try to teach those committed to our care1 of the love of ,god and ,jesus1 which has existed so long for them1 even as it has for us4 ,it is a privilege1 in place of their fear and worship of all nature1 to tell them of the tender love and care of a ,heavenly ,father4 ,it is a privilege to see the faces brighten and show the peace of ,god1 because their hungry1 fainting1 souls have found the ,master4 ,there may be self-denial in a life among them2 but in working for the elevation of a people like this1 not simply to be our servants and forever the weaker race1 but with an aim to bring them to stand on a level1 to be ,christian men and women1 able to fight the battle of life with a pure faith in the one ,god and ,saviour of us all1 is something worthy of self-denial4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,receipts ,,for ,,november1 #ahhf4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,maine1 #afb4jj4 ,alfred4 ,cong4 ,ch4 and ,soc4 #ae4jj
