,lake ,city1 ,utah4 #ahhh4 ,,introduction4 ,there is no subject of popular comment on which there is so little general information as that called ,mormonism4 ,this little work is designed to explain1 in a simple way1 leading features of ,mormon doctrine4 ,the terms ,mormon and ,mormonism are not strictly correct as usually applied4 ,they are inappropriately derived from the ,book of ,mormon1 which is a work containing the history of the former inhabitants of the ,american continent1 written at different times by various persons and finally compiled by a prophet named ,mormon and inscribed upon metallic plates1 which were hidden in the earth to come forth in the latter days1 for the enlightenment of mankind in relation to the origin of the ,indian tribes of this land1 and as a testimony that ,jesus of ,nazareth1 who was crucified by the ,jews1 is indeed the ,messiah1 the ,son of the living ,god4 ,this record1 giving an account of the dealings of the ,almighty with the people it describes1 and whose origin and travels1 wars and industries1 customs and religion1 progress and decay it graphically relates1 was taken from its hiding place by ,joseph ,smith in obedience to the revelation and commandment of ,god and was translated into the ,english language through a heavenly gift bestowed upon that favored man4 ,those who believe in the divinity of the book are commonly called ,mormons1 and the doctrines which they hold are known as ,mormonism4 ,but it is as inconsistent to call people ,mormons1 who believe in the writings of ,mormon1 as it would be to call them ,isaiahs1 or ,jeremiahs1 or ,peters or ,pauls1 because they believe in the scriptures written by those inspired men4 ,the ,church which has been organized under direction from the same heavenly ,power that revealed the ,book of ,mormon1 is entitled the ,church of ,jesus ,christ of ,latter-day ,saints4 ,its members1 then1 should not be called ,mormons1 but ,latter-day ,saints4 ,the members of the church established by ,jesus and ,his apostles1 as will be seen by reference to the ,new ,testament1 were called ,saints4 ,the term ,christians was applied to them in derision1 and was first used at ,antioch4 ,the members of the restored ,church of ,christ are called ,latter-day ,saints to distinguish them from their brethren and sisters of former times4 ,but as ,christians came to be the common appellation of the former-day saints1 so ,mormons has come to be the title generally bestowed upon the ,latter-day ,saints1 and is used herein only in that sense4 ,in the twelve leaves which are plucked from the tree of life and herewith sent forth for the healing of the nations from the effects of error and false doctrine1 will be found a sweet and sovereign balm for spiritual disorders4 ,and by receiving them1 a desire will be created for further gatherings of the same foliage4 ,they will serve to open the eyes of those who have been in spiritual darkness and are yet anxious for the light1 and as a preparation for the attainment of that vital power which makes all things new1 and quickens and animates earthly beings with celestial life and light4 ,we ask for the principles here presented1 the careful consideration of thoughtful minds1 and confidently invite comparison with those utterances of the ,jewish prophets and apostles which are contained in the ,bible4 ,references to those scriptures will be found at the end of this work1 arranged to correspond with each chapter or leaf4 ,the young people among the ,latter-day ,saints will obtain1 by a perusal of this little book1 an understanding of the fundamental principles of the system which has cost the blood of martyred ,prophets and ,apostles to establish4 ,and it will be found useful in the missionary field1 as a sower of those seeds of truth which1 if widely scattered1 will surely fall upon some good ground and bring forth fruit for the service of the ,master4 ,we invoke upon this little work the ,spirit of the most high ,god1 to whose cause it is dedicated1 that wherever it may go light may spring forth to the joy of those who desire the truth1 and that by its means many people may be directed into the way which leads to the tree of life1 enjoy its luscious fruit and gain the gift of endless lives wherein redeemed man is exalted and the eternal ,god is glorified4 ,c4 ,w4 ,p4 ,,contents4 ,,first ,,leaf4 ,god1 our duty to ,him1 ,his laws and purposes1 and the means by which we may now come to ,him and eventually be exalted in ,his presence1 is really priceless4 ,to obtain a knowledge of religious truth1 both young and old should be willing to make every exertion and to offer any sacrifice4 ,there are many systems of religion in the world1 but only one can be correct1 for the simple reason that there is but one ,god for the inhabitants of the earth to worship and obey4 ,if there were many true ,gods to whom mankind owed reverence there might be several true religions4 ,god is the author or revealer of true religion4 ,men may invent and arrange methods of worship1 imagine and think out doctrines1 and formulate and enforce creeds2 but they are of no value as a means of salvation4 ,god must be approached and served in the way which ,he ordains1 or the worship and service will not be accepted4 ,the first principle of true religion is faith4 ,this is the beginning of righteousness4 ,it is the very root of the tree of life1 and its sap runs through all the branches4 ,without faith it is impossible to please ,god4 ,and ,whosoever cometh to ,god must believe that ,he is4 ,faith1 in its simplest sense1 is the assent of the mind1 and its assurance of the existence of things unseen by the natural eye4 ,this is belief4 ,in another sense1 faith is a motive power1 a principle of action4 ,examination into the secret springs that prompt us in the common affairs of life will show that faith moves us to exertion and incites us to perseverance4 ,it is the assurance we feel of the existence or attainment of things unperceived by the senses1 which urges us onward and inspires us with energy4 ,in a higher sense1 faith is a spiritual force4 ,it reaches up to the heavenly spheres4 ,it lays hold upon eternal things4 ,it acts upon the grosser elements1 and moves spiritual essences and immortal intelligences4 ,it is in its fullness all powerful4 ,by its exercise ,god made the worlds1 bringing order out of chaos1 light out of darkness and visible things out of the invisible1 all moved by that spiritual energy called faith4 ,by its power ,christ stilled the winds and walked upon the waves1 healed the sick and raised the dead4 ,elijah1 by faith closed the heavens1 that they rained not1 and overcame the might of death1 passing with his body into the mansions on high4 ,by faith1 ,job beheld the coming of the ,redeemer1 and ,paul ascended to the third heaven4 ,and by faith men and women can overcome the influences of earth and time1 and rise to communion with angelic beings1 and even with ,god1 the highest and holiest of all4 ,man must have faith in ,god in order to become exalted into ,his presence4 ,no man knows of himself how to reach that position1 nor how to obtain salvation from sin and its effects1 among which are sorrow and pain1 and death as the ultimate4 ,to learn anything in relation to these important matters he must be taught of ,god1 and faith is therefore absolutely necessary in the outset of any attempt to learn of ,him4 ,this faith comes by hearing1 or in other words is developed by testimony4 ,through the testimony of men divinely appointed to speak in the name of the ,lord1 faith is awakened in the human heart4 ,it is a principle existing in every soul1 but in the condition of fallen humanity is measurably dormant1 until quickened by a divine influence4 ,the word spoken by inspired men1 accompanied by the influence of the spirit of truth1 arouses faith in the soul of man1 and by its force he is led to call upon the ,lord1 and by its light to see his way to repentance and obedience4 ,no man by his own researches can find out ,god4 ,he may1 by reason and reflection1 by observing and pondering upon the wonders of creation1 by studying his own internal and external nature1 come to the sure conclusion that there is a ,god1 and to a very small extent make an estimate of ,his character4 ,but without the ,almighty manifests ,himself in some manner1 finite man can never obtain a knowledge of infinite ,deity4 ,the speculations of human beings concerning ,god are many and various1 and a vast number of their conclusions inconsistent and vain4 ,human learning1 no matter how extensive1 and human research1 no matter how profound1 are of necessity inadequate alone to the acquisition of a knowledge of divine things4 ,hence an unlettered person enlightened direct from ,god1 will know more of ,deity than the most erudite collegian who has not received this divine illumination4 ,some conception of ,god is necessary to proper faith in ,him4 ,on this account ,he has1 at different periods of the world's history1 manifested ,himself to chosen persons1 whom ,he has deputed to bear witness of ,his existence and attributes to others1 and declare ,his will and commandments4 ,the history of some of these manifestations and revelations given in olden times is recorded in the ,bible4 ,those that have been vouchsafed to man in the latter times are embodied in what is popularly known as ,mormonism1 but which should be called the ,everlasting ,gospel1 renewed on earth4 ,by these we learn that ,god is the ,father of the human race4 ,as every seed in nature bears its own kind1 it is reasonable to conclude that man bears some semblance to the ,being from whom he sprang4 ,and this idea is confirmed by the divine declaration that ,god made man in ,his own image4 ,our ,father in ,heaven1 is then1 a personal ,being4 ,he is a ,spirit4 ,but ,he is also enclothed in a tabernacle4 ,in other words1 ,he is an immortal ,spirit dwelling in an immortal tabernacle4 ,every faculty and power to be found in mortal man exists in the fullness of its perfection in the person of ,deity4 ,those glorious qualities which make so wide a distinction between man and the lower animals are undeveloped photographs1 or rather1 embryotic duplicates of the perfected attributes of the ,eternal ,father4 ,being an individual1 ,god1 in ,his personality1 cannot be omnipresent4 ,but by the ,holy ,spirit1 which proceeds from ,his presence and permeates all things throughout the immensity of space1 ,he can see1 and know1 and influence all things4 ,yet the ,being who has power over all ,his creations proceeds by law1 and while giving laws to all ,his creations is ,himself governed by law and never violates the eternal principles of truth1 justice and mercy4 ,the laws of nature are the laws of ,god1 and ,he is consistent with them and those higher laws which pertain to the spiritual spheres4 ,the ,fatherhood of ,god is a glorious truth that must at some time be impressed upon every one of our race4 ,it involves the brotherhood of man4 ,it is full of ennobling and elevating suggestions1 and prompts those who are impressed with its majesty to deeds worthy of so exalted an origin2 leads to humility and obedience1 and influences all the sons and daughters of the ,eternal ,father to mutual help1 forbearance1 charity and affection1 as brothers and sisters of a family1 whose destiny is connected with the glory1 and dominion1 and matchless power of the ,almighty framer and governor of the universe4 ,,second ,,leaf4 ,true ,repentance the ,consequence of ,faith--,original ,sin and ,actual ,sin--,the ,work of ,redemption--,universal ,redemption from ,original ,sin--,conditions of ,salvation from ,actual sin--,baptism1 its ,object1 ,mode and ,effect--,a ,new ,creature in ,christ ,jesus4 ,faith in ,god once quickened in the human heart1 conscience is awakened and the mind is self-convicted of sin4 ,repentance follows as the consequence4 ,this includes sorrow for the past and determination for the future4 ,this first of these without the second is not genuine repentance4 ,it is barren and fruitless1 and is therefore unacceptable to ,god4 ,resolutions of future rectitude are naturally accompanied by grief for past wrong-doing1 but regret may exist without reform1 and such is not saving repentance1 the virtue of which is in turning from evil and cleaving to good4 ,tears1 self-reproaches1 lamentations1 self-abasement in language or in gesture do not constitute repentance1 no matter how loudly they may be indulged in or how conspicuous they may appear1 but it is evidenced by forsaking things one knows to be wrong and practising that which one is satisfied is right4 ,humility is one of its chief characteristics and this prompts obedience4 ,as repentance follows faith1 so baptism succeeds repentance4 ,for the wish to work righteousness in future implies a desire for forgiveness of past guilt1 and baptism is ordained for the remission of sins4 ,this opens the broad questions of sin and redemption and the doctrine of the atonement4 ,there are two general divisions of sin1 viz41 original and actual4 ,original sin is that which was committed by the parents of the race1 the consequences of which pass upon all of their posterity4 ,actual sin is that committed by each individual and for which he is personally responsible4 ,adam and ,eve broke the divine law given to them in the garden1 the penalty for which was death1 natural and spiritual2 the first being the separation of the spirit and the body1 and the second1 banishment from the presence of ,god4 ,the taint descended to their offspring4 ,death is the common lot1 and a vail is drawn between man and his ,maker4 ,thus mankind are prone to do evil1 and the consequence is that all have sinned and come short of the glory of ,god4 ,the wages of sin is death4 ,redemption is rescue from the results of the fall4 ,this can only be achieved by the raising of the race from the dead and restoring them to the presence of ,god4 ,to effect this1 ,christ came4 ,doing no sin1 ,he gave ,himself as a ransom for those who sinned4 ,he upon whom death had no claim gave ,himself to death that he might satisfy eternal justice and give mercy room to act4 ,death came by ,adam1 life comes by ,christ4 ,through one act death entered the world1 through one act life will come to all that death has grasped4 ,as in ,adam all die1 even so in ,christ shall all be made alive4 ,good and bad1 believer and unbeliever1 male and female1 young and old will be raised from the dead and brought into the presence of the ,eternal ,father4 ,this is the work of ,jesus of ,nazareth1 who shed ,his blood in this great atonement to redeem all mankind from the fall4 ,but this was only part of ,his work4 ,he died not only to atone for original sin but for actual sin1 and to become the mediator between ,god and man4 ,without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin2 this is the law4 ,his blood was shed for the sins of the whole world4 ,for original sin unconditionally1 for actual sin conditionally4 ,mankind had no part in the commission of the original sin1 they perform nothing in the redemption therefrom4 ,its effects came through no acts of theirs2 those effects will be removed without anything they may do4 ,no conditions are required as preliminaries to redemption from original sin2 it was committed by ,adam1 it was atoned for by ,jesus ,christ4 ,but as each person is guilty of his own sins1 so he must comply with the conditions which will entitle him to the full benefits of ,christ's atonement for his own sins4 ,among these conditions are faith1 repentance and baptism4 ,saving faith must necessarily include the ,son as well as the ,father in its objects1 because salvation comes from the ,father through the ,son1 and as ,christ died for all1 there is no other name but ,his given under heaven whereby man can be saved4 ,repentance1 as we have shown1 includes humility1 which leads to obedience1 and baptism follows1 in which is given to the repentant believer that remission of sins1 obtained through the shedding of ,christ's blood in the place of the blood of the sinner4 ,baptism as a part of the gospel is the complete immersion in water of a repentant believer1 by a man having authority to act in the name of the ,father and of the ,son and of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,all this is essential to its validity4 ,the candidate must believe and repent4 ,the administrator must have divine authority4 ,the ordinance must be performed correctly4 ,there is but one baptism1 as there is but one ,lord and one faith4 ,any other kind of baptism is spurious and of no effect4 ,the believing1 repentant sinner1 after making covenant with ,god to forsake evil and keep ,his commandments1 is taken down into the water by the duly authorized and ordained representative of the ,lord ,jesus1 and1 being dead to his old sins by repentance1 is buried from his old life by immersion in the watery grave2 and then1 raised up again to newness of life1 is born of the water1 and stands on earth a new creature in ,christ ,jesus4 ,he is clean before ,god4 ,he is as pure from guilt as a new-born babe4 ,though his sins were as scarlet1 he is now washed whiter than wool1 and is prepared for the next step on the straight and narrow path which leads to life eternal4 ,happy indeed is he4 ,joy unspeakable fills his heart4 ,peace indescribable dwells in his bosom4 ,purity shines in all his nature4 ,he has entered by the door1 into the sheep fold1 and is one of the flock of ,christ4 ,the load of his past misdeeds is rolled from his shoulders and he is free4 ,the liberty of the gospel is his4 ,henceforth he should be the servant only of the ,king of ,kings1 and a soldier of the cross4 ,but he has a warfare to fight which will require all his strength1 resolution and fortitude4 ,for he has come out from the world and the world will hate and persecute him1 and malign him1 and try to despitefully use him4 ,the flesh of his own being will be in conflict with his spiritual nature now brought into actual life4 ,and ,satan1 the great adversary of the children of light1 with his hosts of emissaries will take special pains to tempt and try to allure him from the path of salvation4 ,but ,god will be on his side1 and if he holds true to his baptismal covenants he will come off more than conqueror over all1 and obtain the full and complete benefits of the atonement wrought out by the spotless and merciful ,savior1 who henceforth is his loved and loving ,lord4 ,,third ,,leaf4 ,the ,holy ,ghost1 its ,nature1 ,office and ,power--,conferred ,through the ,laying on of ,hands--,gifts and ,fruits of the ,holy ,spirit--,how ,obtained--,their ,object and ,design--,effects of ,its ,withdrawal--,infinite ,riches of ,its ,full ,inspiration4 ,the repentant1 baptized believer arises from the tomb of water cleansed from sin and washed pure of iniquity4 ,he is spiritually resurrected4 ,his old life is gone4 ,he is born again4 ,this is a type of the bodily resurrection to come4 ,he is now prepared to receive the ,holy ,ghost1 which dwelleth not in unclean tabernacles4 ,this is an endowment from on high4 ,it is the ,comforter which fills the absent place of the personal ,christ4 ,it is a manifester of truth4 ,it bears witness of the ,father and the ,son4 ,it is the light of eternity4 ,it reveals things present and past1 and unfolds events that are to come4 ,it is the true scripture-maker4 ,by it the prophets wrote the word of the ,lord4 ,it proceeds from the presence of ,god4 ,it is the communicating element between man and his ,maker4 ,it is the source from which flow the spiritual gifts of the gospel4 ,without it no one can say from knowledge that ,jesus is the ,lord4 ,without it1 the things pertaining to immortal spheres cannot be comprehended by mortals4 ,without it1 no one can see the way which leads to eternal life4 ,without it1 none can enter the kingdom of ,god4 ,there is a set mode by which this great gift is conferred upon mankind4 ,god's house is a house of order4 ,his laws are set in the spiritual as in the physical universe1 and there is no confusion in any of ,his works4 ,the ways of men are not ,his ways1 and ,he does not bend them to suit men's diversified notions4 ,to obtain the gift of the ,holy ,ghost1 the necessary conditions must be complied with4 ,these we have already explained4 ,the method by which it is conferred is1 the laying on of hands by men who have themselves received it and have been called of ,god and ordained to administer it4 ,true faith1 genuine repentance1 correct baptism1 properly administered1 are as surely to be followed by the outpouring of the ,holy ,ghost1 through the laying on of hands1 authoritatively administered1 as the harvest is to come from seed sown in good soil and ripened by the rains and sunshine of heaven1 or as the results of a chemical experiment are to be achieved when the needful elements are correctly compounded4 ,the effects of this gift upon the recipient are not generally of a startling character4 ,they are not necessarily physical4 ,the chief office of the ,holy ,ghost is to enlighten the internal man or woman4 ,it administers to the spirit4 ,it brings peace1 comfort and joy to the soul4 ,it gives assurance of divine acceptance2 and it establishes inward strength to resist sin and evil and lay hold upon all that is good4 ,but it does not convulse the system4 ,it produces no contortions of the countenance4 ,it will not throw people to the earth as if they were dead4 ,neither will it cause them to yell1 shout1 jump around in paroxysms or act in an unseemly manner4 ,its internal fruits are faith1 knowledge1 wisdom1 joy1 peace1 patience1 temperance1 long suffering1 brotherly kindness and charity4 ,its external gifts are manifested in prophecies1 visions1 discernments1 healings1 miracles1 power over evil spirits1 speaking in various tongues1 interpretation of tongues1 etc4 ,these several gifts are distributed according to the will of ,god among the various recipients of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,one person may receive several of them4 ,some may not obtain any of those gifts which are manifested outwardly4 ,neither are the latter always the most to be desired4 ,prophecy is better than tongues as a gift1 though the latter is more showy1 and wisdom and faith are better than either4 ,divine knowledge with divine wisdom in its use is a gift of priceless worth1 bringing joy beyond expression to its possessor1 and conferring untold blessings upon others4 ,these various gifts of the ,spirit are obtainable through the prayer of faith4 ,ask and it shall be given you is the promise to the ,saints4 ,and they are called ,saints who have obeyed the laws and ordinances we have explained1 and received the gift of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,but their desires must be pure in order to obtain the blessings for which they ask4 ,these are not given as signs to be consumed on any one's lust4 ,neither are they bestowed as wonders to create astonishment or feed the love of the marvelous4 ,they are designed for the comfort and confirmation of the faith of the true and obedient believer1 and as tokens of the love of an indulgent ,father1 and they must be used in wisdom1 or they will be withdrawn and work injury instead of benefit4 ,the ceremony of the bestowal of the ,holy ,ghost is called confirmation4 ,as baptism is the birth of water1 so confirmation is the birth or baptism of the ,spirit4 ,both are necessary to entrance into the kingdom of ,god1 whether that is viewed in the light of the ,church on earth or the glorious dominion of the ,father in heaven4 ,only they who are led by this ,spirit are truly the sons of ,god4 ,as it is bestowed through obedience1 so it may be withdrawn through disobedience4 ,the condition of those who lose this gift after having enjoyed it is truly lamentable4 ,the light that was within them becomes darkness1 and their last state is worse than their first4 ,their spiritual tastes become dead or vitiated1 light seems to them darkness1 and that which was once their greatest delight becomes the object of their deepest aversion4 ,they then become a prey to influences of evil2 hatred and malice spring up in their hearts towards the children of light2 and the culmination of their career1 if persisted in and reclamation does not come1 is the shedding of innocent blood1 for which there is no forgiveness4 ,the possessor of the ,holy ,ghost is infinitely rich2 those who receive it and lose it are of all men the poorest4 ,but there are various degrees of its possession4 ,many who obtain it walk but measurably in its light4 ,but there are a few who live by its whisperings1 and approach by its mediumship into close communion with heavenly beings of the highest order4 ,to them its light grows brighter every day4 ,for them are joys1 anticipations and glorious hopes that thrill no other bosoms1 sweet experiences that earthly pleasures cannot bring1 and a spiritual growth towards the stature of ,christ ,jesus that eternity only will fully unfold to general view4 ,,fourth ,,leaf4 ,divine ,authority--,without it all ,gospel ,administrations ,vain--,it ,god--,ordination--,value of the ,priesthood4 ,the ordinances of the gospel1 being of divine origin1 require divine authority in their administration4 ,baptism at the hands of one not appointed to attend to it is void4 ,it is therefore without value and without effect4 ,if any unauthorized person were to lay hands upon a baptized believer1 even if the correct form of the ordinance were observed1 the ,holy ,ghost would not flow to the subject4 ,no matter how good the intentions of either party might be1 the lack of authority would vitiate the whole transaction4 ,no company1 firm1 society1 court or government would acknowledge or become responsible for the acts of any but its duly appointed and properly accredited agents4 ,why then should the ,great ,king endorse the doings of men who take upon themselves duties not required of them1 or bestow1 through their unauthorized performance1 blessings that belong only to the administrations of ,his chosen ambassadors8 ,it is strange that intelligent persons who clearly perceive the necessity of valid authority in human affairs1 should imagine that it is not necessary in divine affairs2 that while no earthly potentate would be expected to pay the slightest attention to proceedings of any pretended representative of a nation or ruler1 the ,eternal ,monarch of the universe must needs honor the acts of any individual of a devotional cast of mind1 who chooses to perform ceremonies and ordinances in ,his great name4 ,a man may have such faith in ,god as to obtain choice blessings1 behold visions1 receive heavenly gifts1 and lay hold upon extraordinary spiritual powers1 and yet have no right to administer any ordinance in the name of the ,lord4 ,man cannot acquire this authority2 it must be conferred upon him in the appointed way4 ,in every age when the ,almighty has had a church or organized body of true worshipers on earth1 ,he has sent among them men who were authorized by ,him to act in ,his name4 ,of such were ,noah1 ,melchisedec1 ,abraham1 ,moses1 ,elijah1 ,peter1 ,james and ,john1 and many others4 ,they were not only endowed with the ,holy ,ghost1 but were also appointed and set apart to administer needful rites in ,god's stead4 ,what they sealed on earth by this authority was sealed in heaven1 and what they loosed on earth was loosed in heaven4 ,in other words1 what they performed1 as directed of ,god1 was accepted by ,him and was of the same force as though attended to by ,him in person4 ,any authority less than this is the same as no authority4 ,this delegated power from ,god to man is called the ,priesthood4 ,sometimes this term is used in reference to the men who hold this authority4 ,properly speaking1 however1 it relates to the office rather than the person4 ,melchisedec was a great high priest1 and the authority he held was eternal in its nature2 without beginning of days or end of life4 ,it did not depend upon lineage either of father or mother1 and it is written that he who holds it in faithfulness abideth a priest continually2 that is1 he retains it in this world1 and also in the world to come4 ,aaron received a ,priesthood which was of another order1 and that ran in a family line1 descending from father to son1 and was subordinate to the higher ,priesthood after the order of ,melchisedec4 ,john the ,baptist held and administered the ,aaronic or lesser ,priesthood1 but ,jesus received and acted in the ,melchisedec or higher ,priesthood4 ,so ,john could baptize the repentant for the remission of sins1 but could not confer the ,holy ,ghost as ,jesus did4 ,in like manner1 ,philip1 acting in the lesser ,priesthood1 could baptize the people of ,samaria1 but had to send for ,peter or some other apostle acting in the higher ,priesthood1 to come down and lay hands upon them1 that they might receive the ,holy ,ghost4 ,jesus did not take this authority upon ,himself although he was the ,son of ,god4 ,he glorified not ,himself to be made an ,high ,priest1 but ,his ,father called ,him1 saying1 ,thou art a ,priest forever1 after the order of ,melchisedec4 ,moses and ,elijah held similar authority in their day and retained it when they left the sphere of mortality4 ,and they came and administered in that ,priesthood to ,jesus on the ,mount of ,transfiguration4 ,as the ,father called ,him1 so called ,he the apostles1 and so1 under divine direction1 they called and ordained others4 ,thus the ,priesthood in both orders or branches was continued in the early ,christian ,church1 until through transgression1 it was taken from among men1 and in its place a spurious priesthood1 destitute of divine authority1 divine inspiration and divine power1 was set up by ambitious and designing men4 ,this is priestcraft1 the base counterfeit of the true and heavenly coin4 ,when the ,priesthood is once lost it cannot be regained merely by the hopes1 wishes or acts of men4 ,no matter how strong a desire any one may have to benefit his fellow man1 he must not attempt to administer to him any ordinance or ceremony of the gospel unless called of ,god so to do4 ,and this call does not come to men merely in the heart or the imagination4 ,a great many enthusiastic persons have felt themselves called to the ministry4 ,but this over-anxiety does not give them the ,priesthood1 any more than strong wishes of a politician for the post of minister to ,berlin1 clothe him with authority to represent this government in the ,german empire4 ,the ,priesthood is given by ordination4 ,when there is no man living in the flesh1 who holds this authority1 its restoration can only be effected by the administration of heavenly beings who formerly held it on the earth4 ,they can return when so permitted and instructed1 as ,moses and ,elias did on the mount4 ,but when the link is restored1 they never step over the line of the two spheres for this purpose again1 while there remains one man on the earth holding the legitimate authority4 ,for ,god's house is a house of order1 and the rights and powers of ,his ,priesthood cannot be invaded with impunity either by mortal men or the heavenly hosts4 ,under divine inspiration and certain rules and provisions1 those who hold this ,priesthood may ordain others by the laying on of hands4 ,thus1 while mankind are worthy of its administrations and accompanying blessings1 it may be perpetuated in the earth1 a medium of communication between ,god and man1 a guide for the feet of erring mortals to the straight and narrow path that leadeth unto life4 ,without it1 the inhabitants of the earth wander in spiritual darkness1 and those who presume to step forward as their teachers1 are blind leaders of the blind1 and all their ministrations in the name of ,him who never sent them are vain1 worthless and without force or virtue in time or eternity4 ,,fifth ,,leaf4 ,the ,church of ,christ--,its ,unity--,christ's ,church under ,his ,personal doctrines and be animated by the same spirit4 ,no matter how many sections of the ,church there may be1 or how widely they may be separated geographically1 they will be governed by the same rule of discipline1 and be under the direction of the same head4 ,the ,church of ,christ must be established under ,his own supervision1 and according to ,his commandments4 ,a society of persons professing to believe in ,him1 but organized without any communication from ,him1 is not and cannot be ,his ,church1 whatever its members may call it1 or however sincere they may be in their intentions4 ,some suppose that every one who believes that ,jesus is the ,christ is1 by virtue of that faith1 a member of ,his ,church4 ,this is a palpable error4 ,as well might it be assumed that all who believe that the ,order of ,masonry is a correct form of brotherhood1 are by that belief made members of the ,order4 ,all societies have some established regulations for the admission of members4 ,the ,church of ,christ is no exception to the rule4 ,but the initiatory rites in ,his ,church are prescribed by ,him1 and no one has the right to change them or substitute others in their place4 ,they are uniform for all people1 of both sexes1 of every race and of every grade of society4 ,the churches established by men have various modes of receiving members and of conducting church government4 ,this is one proof that they are the churches of men1 and not of ,jesus ,christ4 ,we have already explained the first principles of the gospel which must be received and obeyed in order to obtain a standing in ,christ's ,church4 ,those who have believed1 repented1 been baptized by one having authority for the remission of sins1 and have been confirmed by the laying on of hands for the gift of the ,holy ,ghost1 are thus made members of the ,church of ,christ4 ,and this is the only way of admission4 ,all who have not complied with these rules are outside of the ,church and can get in by no other door than this appointed entrance4 ,christ will not accept the devices and ordinances and ceremonies ordained of men4 ,they are not ,his1 and are of no force or effect so far as the kingdom of heaven is concerned1 either in this world or in the world to come4 ,christ is the head of the ,church1 as man is the head of the woman4 ,but as the woman has also a head to her own personality1 so has the ,church4 ,the apostleship is the principal governing authority thereof4 ,when ,christ ascended on high1 the earthly headship devolved upon ,his apostles1 of whom ,peter1 ,james and ,john were the chief4 ,there were also the seventy appointed by the ,savior as ,his traveling ministers1 and ,he gave other officers to the ,church1 such as evangelists1 pastors1 elders1 bishops1 teachers1 deacons1 etc4 ,all these were under the direction of the apostles1 who were inspired1 and instructed1 and led by ,jesus1 even after ,his ascension1 and were filled with the ,holy ,ghost1 which bears record of the ,father and the ,son4 ,a church which has not inspired apostles nor prophets1 cannot be the ,church of ,christ1 for these are essential to its full constitution4 ,all the officers we have named are necessary1 in their various positions1 to the complete organization of the body of ,christ4 ,through these appointed servants of ,god1 the members of the ,church are instructed in their duties1 led along in the path of truth1 admonished of their faults1 rebuked for their transgressions1 brought to the unity of the faith1 corrected of their errors1 and when they become evil-doers1 and reformation is not probable1 disfellowshipped from communion or excommunicated from the ,church4 ,the ,church of ,christ is progressive4 ,that is1 it advances in the knowledge of the truth4 ,as fast as its members are prepared for additional light1 through the practice of principles already revealed1 new manifestations are given1 for the growth of all who will receive the truths unfolded towards the fullness of the stature of ,christ ,jesus4 ,old truths are not discarded1 but new truths are added1 and clearer light is thrown upon what was previously known4 ,thus the ,church advances and prepares its communicants for a higher sphere when they pass away from the plane of mortal existence4 ,but while it casts off no truth1 it eliminates from itself1 by natural process1 everything obnoxious to its health and vitality4 ,corrupt and wicked persons occasionally find their way into its sanctuary2 some1 after being washed from their impurities1 turn again to their filthiness1 and others become rebellious and discordant4 ,these incongruous elements are gradually separated from the body4 ,for the ,church is a living thing1 and casts off that which does not assimilate or which is inimical to its growth1 harmony and progress4 ,the members of the ,church are all united by a fraternal bond4 ,they are all brethren and sisters1 no matter what their condition in life1 no matter of what nationality4 ,indeed nationality is swallowed up in fraternity4 ,they are no longer ,jew or ,gentile1 ,english1 ,german1 ,danish or ,american1 they are all one in ,christ ,jesus4 ,they are no more ,catholics or ,protestants1 ,dissenters or ,episcopalians1 but are baptized by one spirit into one body1 and in all essential principles have one faith1 and are joined together in the same mind chapter1 will show that there has been a wide and remarkable departure from the faith once delivered to the saints4 ,it is contrary both to scripture and sound reason to think that ,christ would set up two or more discordant religious systems to distract mankind and cause strife and contention4 ,god is not the author of confusion4 ,there is but one straight and narrow path that leadeth unto life4 ,the mind of ,god is one2 the minds of men are various4 ,the fact then that there are various opposing religions in the world is conclusive evidenced that men have been engaged in their invention4 ,it is also clear that they have established very imperfect imitations of the true ,church of ,christ4 ,the departure from the order1 doctrine1 ordinances and spirit of primitive ,christianity commenced at a very early period4 ,contentions began to creep in among the early saints1 and they soon commenced to array themselves in factions1 some being of ,paul1 others of ,apollos1 others of ,cephas1 etc4 ,and the inspired leaders of the ,church foresaw the great apostasy which would take place1 as may be seen from their epistles4 ,paul declared that the day of the ,lord's second advent would not dawn until a falling away should occur4 ,he described the condition of apostate ,christendom1 when the people would not endure sound doctrine1 but would heap to themselves teachers1 having itching ears2 when doctrines of devils should be taught instead of the pure gospel2 when they would have a form of godliness1 but deny the power thereof2 and ,peter declared that false teachers would arise in the place of the duly authorized servants of ,god1 and bring in damnable heresies2 who through covetousness would make merchandise of the souls of men2 and by whom the way of truth would be evil spoken of4 ,this mystery of iniquity had already begun to work even in their day1 and rapidly increased after their departure4 ,the combined powers of the world1 the flesh and the devil1 made such inroads upon the ,church of ,christ1 that1 by the time when ,john1 the beloved disciple1 was banished to the isle of ,patmos1 where he received the great vision known as the ,book of ,revelation1 only seven branches of the ,church were worthy of divine mention1 and some of them had become so corrupt that terrible denunciations were hurled against them1 and they were threatened with complete rejection4 ,in that same vision the inspired apostle beheld the utter and universal apostasy of the ,church and the spread of spurious ,christianity until all nations were made drunk with the wine of the wrath of the fornication of ,babylon1 the mother of harlots and abominations4 ,instead of the chaste ,church of ,christ1 clothed with the sun1 the moon under her feet and the crown of twelve stars upon her head1 the scarlet-clothed impostor1 sitting upon the beast1 grasping a golden cup full of filthiness for the whole world to drink4 ,regal pomp and state power1 instead of the solar glory of the ,melchisedec and the lunar rays of the ,aaronic ,priesthoods1 with the stellar crown of apostleship shining at the head6 ,mystery instead of light6 ,painted gaudiness instead of modest purity6 ,names of blasphemy instead of that one sacred name at which every knee should bow6 ,when the lights that ,christ kindled on earth to lead mankind in the only true way were put out by the hands of murderous men1 darkness overspread the world1 and gross darkness covered the people4 ,errors multiplied4 ,heresies sprang up like rank weeds4 ,the ,spirit of ,christ gradually withdrew4 ,and when what was left of the form of ,christianity became allied to the softened paganism of the ,romish empire1 the angels looked down from afar upon another triumph of the arch adversary1 who rules as prince of this world1 and reigns in the hearts of the children of disobedience4 ,the ,papal church1 seated upon the ,romish ,state1 was fitly prefigured by the woman upon the beast4 ,the ,church of ,christ was gone1 without even a shadow of its presence to be seen upon the earth4 ,all nations were blinded and intoxicated by the mystery and abominations1 the heresies and perversions1 the pomps and vanities of this spurious ecclesiastical system1 with its popes and cardinals in the place of apostles and prophets1 its priestcraft in the place of the ,priesthood1 and its force1 bloodshed1 cruelty and lust in the place of the love1 liberty1 peace and charity of the departed ,church of the ,redeemer4 ,after a time came the reformation4 ,protestants against the tyranny1 falsehood and gross villainies of this blasphemous hierarchy sounded aloud the story of her abominations and shook all ,christendom with the force of their eloquence4 ,anathematized and excommunicated from the mother church1 they established new churches1 discarding many errors but retaining as many more4 ,still further reformations were inaugurated1 originating more churches1 and thus sects produced sects1 and as religious liberty increased so religious systems multiplied1 until the term ,christianity covered an incongruous mass of discordant elements1 representing all shades of human opinion1 without a single authoritative voice deputed of heaven to harmonize and bring them into order4 ,for1 though immense good accrued to the world through the exposure of error and the unfolding of truth1 which were the consequence of the reformation and its successive developments1 and though many excellent mea spent their lives and suffered cruel deaths for principles of righteousness1 yet there was no direct communication established between them and the heavens1 and that authority by which the apostles administered for and in behalf of the ,father1 the ,son and the ,holy ,ghost was still unrestored to man4 ,there was no inspired prophet1 no gifted seer1 no appointed revelator through whom the will of ,god could be made known4 ,therefore1 the ordinances of the gospel could not be administered acceptably to ,god1 and all such ceremonies as were established among the various sects were of necessity void and without virtue in heaven4 ,so the world rolled on1 and men framed religions1 all containing some truth as well as some errors1 and many persons who would have done well in advocating what they believed to be right1 in their own names1 undertook to assume the name of the ,trinity1 and to officiate as though authorized by ,jesus ,christ1 while they openly admitted that there had been no communication from on high for centuries1 and maintained that the days of revelation were gone forever4 ,and thus the effects of ,mystery1 ,babylon1 the ,mother of abominations1 were felt directly or indirectly throughout all the nations professing to be ,christian1 and millions upon millions of mistaken souls passed behind the vail without receiving the principles and ordinances of salvation1 and the living and the dead were left in the spiritual darkness of centuries of apostasy to wait until the dawning of the great and last dispensation1 the times of restitution1 when the crowning act of ,god's mercy to man should be performed1 and the ushering in of the millennial day should bring again to the world1 with increasing glory1 the gospel1 the ,priesthood1 the blessings and the powers of all former ages1 for the salvation of the human race and the permanent ,truth4 ,having shown the universal apostasy from the ,church established by ,christ and ,his ,apostles1 we now turn with pleasure from the dark picture of error1 strife1 confusion and priestcraft1 painted in sombre hues during a long succession of centuries1 to a more cheering and truly delightful subject4 ,the same inspired apostles who foretold the general departure from the way of truth1 also predicted the restoration of the gospel1 the ushering in of a later and final dispensation1 and the ultimate triumph of ,god's kingdom upon the whole face of the earth4 ,after seeing the dominion of the mother of abominations extending to all the kingdoms of the world1 ,john1 the beloved1 beheld her entire destruction4 ,this was preceded in the vision by the coming of an angel from heaven with the everlasting gospel for every nation1 kindred1 tongue and people1 and the cry from heaven1 ,come out of her1 my people1 that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues4 ,we are able to state1 with the most positive assurance1 that the angel with the gospel has come1 and that the voice from heaven has been uttered as a warning to all nations2 that the gospel will be preached and the warning will be sounded1 by divine authority1 to every tribe1 and nation1 and tongue4 ,joseph ,smith was the chosen instrument in the hands of ,god to receive the glad message and direct its promulgation to all the world4 ,angels do not travel and preach to mankind in person2 when they bring tidings from on high they deliver the heavenly mandates to a chosen man who1 in turn1 makes them known to his fellows4 ,but though the ministry of angels is not general1 all people may know thereof of a surety by obedience to the commandments revealed1 which is followed by a divine witness of their truth and of the fact of the manifestation4 ,thus1 while ,joseph ,smith was selected to receive direct divine communications1 every one who in faith obeys them1 obtains a satisfactory testimony that the message is true and that the messenger was authorized to declare it4 ,but receiving the gospel1 whether by angelic ministrations or otherwise1 is one thing1 and obtaining authority to preach it and administer its ordinances is another4 ,knowledge1 light and revelation may be enjoyed1 and yet the favored recipient of these blessings may be without any authority to perform any official act in the name of the ,lord4 ,joseph ,smith not only received the ministrations of the angel bearing the everlasting gospel1 but also obtained the right to officiate in all its ordinances1 rites1 ceremonies and endowments4 ,he did not receive this authority from man4 ,as we have already shown1 it had departed from the earth centuries before4 ,no amount of learning would bring it4 ,no college1 prelate1 potentate or priest could confer it4 ,all the wealth of the world could not purchase it4 ,it does not come by the will of man4 ,how did ,joseph ,smith gain it8 ,holy men of old1 who held the keys of this power in former dispensations1 came to earth as ministering spirits and ordained him to the same offices which they held in mortality4 ,first came ,john the ,baptist1 who was beheaded for the truth's sake1 bearing the keys of the ,aaronic or lesser ,priesthood1 and ordained ,joseph ,smith and ,oliver ,cowdery to the authority thereof1 with the right to preach the gospel of repentance and administer baptism for the remission of sins4 ,but as ,john did not hold the power when on earth to confer the ,holy ,ghost1 he did not presume to bestow it upon others4 ,next came ,peter1 ,james and ,john with the keys of the ,apostleship1 of the holy ,melchisedek ,priesthood and of the dispensation of the fullness of times1 which they conferred upon ,joseph and ,oliver1 giving them authority to ordain others to this ministry and to confirm baptized believers by the laying on of hands for the gift of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,the lesser ,priesthood holds the power of the ministration of angels and authority to administer in temporal things4 ,the greater ,priesthood holds the power of communion with the ,highest and of attending to all things1 spiritual and temporal2 for the salvation and exaltation of man till he reaches the actual presence of the ,eternal ,god1 and shines forth in the fullness of the attributes of his ,almighty ,father4 ,thus power was restored to rebuild the ,church of ,christ1 to preach the true gospel2 to baptize penitent believers for the remission of sins2 to bestow upon them the ,holy ,ghost1 bearing witness of the ,father and the ,son and of acceptance with them2 to appoint and ordain all the various ministers necessary for the publishing of the truth to all nations1 the work of the ministry1 the perfecting of the ,saints and the edifying and government of the body of ,christ4 ,so the ,church was set up in these latter times4 ,humble believers received the word with gladness1 and obeying it1 obtained from ,god the witness of its truth4 ,the signs promised to believers followed them4 ,they spoke in other tongues1 prophesied1 saw visions1 dreamed divine dreams and enjoyed all the gifts of the ,church as did the saints of old4 ,the sick were healed by the laying on of hands1 devils were cast out1 the deaf heard1 the eyes of the blind were opened1 the lame leaped for joy1 the tongue of the dumb was loosed1 the heavens were opened to human view1 and the ,holy ,ghost1 as on the day of pentecost1 rested down in power upon the ,saints of the new dispensation4 ,then they knew for themselves4 ,doubt had fled1 the darkness was dispersed1 ,satan trembled1 priestcraft raged1 and while the tidings of the restored gospel caused joy in heaven and praise on earth1 the powers of evil in and out of the flesh conspired to fight the truth1 make war upon believers and persecute the servants of ,god unto death4 ,but the ,lord strengthened the hands of ,his people and poured out light and knowledge from on high4 ,the hidden things of ages were brought forth4 ,revelation after revelation was multiplied to the ,church4 ,then came ,elijah the ,prophet1 bearing the keys of the turning of the hearts of the fathers to the children and of the children to the fathers1 that the link of the broken chain of the ,priesthood through the ages might be welded together1 and the spirit world be known to men in the flesh4 ,next came ,moses1 the man of ,god with the keys of the gathering of ,israel1 that the remnants might be brought in from their long dispersion and inherit the lands promised to their forefathers4 ,and ,raphael and ,gabriel and other holy messengers also appeared1 each in their order1 bearing the keys of their respective ministries when living as men upon the earth1 that all the powers needful for the establishment of the great and last dispensation of the fullness of times might be centered upon the head of the man chosen to open it to the world1 and that he might bestow them upon others called and chosen by the spirit of revelation4 ,glory to ,god in the highest6 ,the straight and narrow way is opened4 ,the silence of ages is broken4 ,jehovah speaks from out the bosom of eternity4 ,angels again come down from the abodes of bliss4 ,communication is restored between man and his ,maker4 ,the ,holy ,ghost again comforts1 reveals and bears witness4 ,the sacred gifts are once more enjoyed4 ,all earth shall hear the glad tidings4 ,every soul shall be warned4 ,and though ,joseph1 the chosen seer1 and many of his brethren have become martyrs for the truth's sake1 and the bosom of declaration is plainly and positively made in the scriptures that there is no other name given under heaven whereby man can be saved1 but the name of ,christ ,jesus4 ,it is also proclaimed that except a man be born of water and of the ,spirit1 he cannot enter into the kingdom of ,god4 ,many millions of the earth's inhabitants have passed away without hearing the name of ,jesus1 or having any opportunity of the privilege of the second birth4 ,and the query arises1 must all these souls be lost in consequence8 ,and if so can the ,god of the ,bible be just8 ,further2 the question comes up1 ,if the world has been in error so long1 and the ,church of ,latter-day ,saints is the only true ,church of ,christ1 what has become of the generations of professing ,christians1 who lived and died in the centuries between the loss of the gospel and the ,priesthood and their restoration in the present age8 ,the difficulty arises through lack of a correct understanding of the plan of salvation1 and through the erroneous doctrines of unauthorized teachers4 ,orthodox ,christianity affirms that the future state of man is fixed at death2 that the departing spirit goes either to an eternal heaven or an everlasting hell2 and that there is no possibility of change1 but1 to use a familiar saying1 as the tree falls1 so it lies4 ,the light of modern revelation rolls back the darkness of ages and unfolds the glorious plan of human redemption in its fullness1 and the illuminated soul perceives the triumph of justice in union with mercy1 through the extension of gospel privileges beyond the narrow sphere of this mortal life4 ,why should the opportunity to learn and the power to obey the truths of the gospel be confined to dwellers in the flesh8 ,is it to be supposed that when the immortal spirit leaves its domicile of clay its powers of preception1 of reason1 of reception or rejection of truth or error1 of submission or rebellion to the decrees of heaven1 are buried with the decaying body8 ,the idea is contrary to all the hopes of the life to come kindled in the heart by the promises of the gospel4 ,it is also antiscriptural4 ,there is nothing in holy writ which establishes any such absurdity4 ,paul declares that all men shall be judged by the gospel which he preached4 ,if this is true and ,god is just1 must not all men hear that gospel and have the opportunity of receiving or rejecting it8 ,and if this privilege has not been granted to them while in the body1 must it not be afforded them when out of the body8 ,peter states that the ,lord shall judge the quick and the dead1 and explains that ,for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead1 that they might be judged according to men in the flesh1 but live according to ,god in the spirit4 ,he mentions this in connection with his history of the mission and works of ,jesus1 who1 he tells us1 was put to death in the flesh1 but quickened by the spirit3 by which also ,he went and preached unto the spirits in prison4 ,this accounts for the whereabouts of the ,savior during the interval between his death on the cross and ,his resurrection from the sepulchre in the rock4 ,at ,his appearance to ,mary in the garden1 after ,he had risen1 ,he said1 ,i am not yet ascended to my father4 ,during the three days of ,his body's sleep in the tomb ,he was continuing the work the ,father had given ,him to do4 ,he was preaching deliverance to the captives1 and the opening of the prison to them that were bound4 ,that these spirits in prison had been in the flesh1 ,peter makes clear by stating that they were disobedient 99 99 in the days of ,noah1 while the ark was a preparing4 ,the gospel was thus preached also to the dead1 that they might have the same opportunities and be judged by the same gospel as the living4 ,the exercise of faith is an operation of the spirit of man1 and so is repentance4 ,these lead to obedience and obedience to acceptance with ,god4 ,the body without the spirit is dead and can neither believe1 repent nor obey1 but the spirit without the body is active1 sentient and capable of exercising all of its powers that are adapted to a spiritual sphere4 ,it is only through the medium of the body1 however1 that the spirit can handle1 experience and fully control or be subjected to corporeal things4 ,that part of the gospel which pertains to earthly ordinances and observances is1 therefore1 unapproachable to the disembodied4 ,but they can learn and submit to all its spiritual laws and influences and live according to ,god in the spirit4 ,they can hear the gospel1 for ,christ preached it to many of them2 they can obey1 for ,he not only proclaimed liberty to them but ,he led captivity captive1 and they must therefore have repented and become acceptable to ,god4 ,as one of the early fathers of the ,church said of the slain ,redeemer1 ,he went into hades alone1 but he came forth with a multitude4 ,the ,jews of ,christ's day believed that there were two divisions of the spirit world--,paradise and ,tartarus4 ,the good went to the former1 the bad to the latter4 ,jesus promised the repentant thief on the cross3 ,to-day shalt thou be with me in ,paradise4 ,this is not the abode of the ,eternal ,father but of departed spirits1 where they wait until the resurrection4 ,a place of instruction and preparation1 of peace and rest1 of joy and serenity1 of progress toward perfection4 ,and into this abode of the just1 ,christ led from ,tartarus the spirits purified and chastened through their captivity1 who were disobedient in the flesh in the days of ,noah1 but had suffered for their rebellion1 and in the spirit had gladly received the gospel through ,his ministrations4 ,and thus1 in the due time of the ,lord all who have dwelt upon the earth in any age1 ,jew1 ,gentile1 heathen1 ,christian1 may hear the glad tidings of the everlasting gospel preached by those appointed and authorized1 and have an opportunity of repentance1 improvement and reconciliation4 ,but the ordinances which belong to the sphere of mortality cannot be received in a spiritual estate2 they belong to the flesh and must be attended to in the flesh4 certainty that is exhibited in the government of the material universe obtains in the spiritual domain1 and is as much a necessity in one as in the other4 ,as man cannot change the revolutions of the planets nor alter the principles that underlie all motion and regulate all matter1 so he cannot turn aside the decrees of ,jehovah1 nor modify1 in the least degree1 any rule or commandment pertaining to the everlasting gospel4 ,neither will ,he who reigns in the unseen world1 as well as in the sphere perceived by the senses1 swerve from ,his established laws in the former any more than in the latter4 ,baptism1 or the birth of water in the form and mode already described1 is an essential ordinance4 ,there are others equally necessary in their time and place in the divine plan of human redemption4 ,they must be rightly received and administered1 or the blessings that spring from them1 as their natural fruit1 cannot be enjoyed4 ,as aliens cannot be admitted to the rights and privileges of citizenship in an earthly government1 without complying with the naturalization laws in such case made and provided1 so aliens from the heavenly kingdom cannot be received into its dominion1 nor be adopted into the family of the ,eternal ,king1 without obeying the laws set as the conditions of admission4 ,these laws and ordinances will be made known to the inhabitants of this planet1 either in the flesh or in the disembodied condition4 ,they will have the opportunity of receiving or rejecting them on the agency given to man1 that a just judgment may be rendered in the great day of accounts4 ,but ordinances1 such as baptism1 the laying on of hands for confirmation1 ordination1 marriage1 etc41 belong to the corporeal sphere4 ,they are set for the state of probation4 ,water is an earthly element1 or compound of elements1 and the blessings ordained to flow from the death1 burial and new birth1 typified by authorized baptism therein1 cannot be secured in any other way4 ,millions of earth's sons and daughters have passed out of the body without obeying the law of baptism4 ,many of them will gladly accept the word and law of the ,lord when it is proclaimed to them in the spirit world4 ,but they cannot there attend to ordinances that belong to the sphere which they have left4 ,can nothing be done in their case8 ,must they forever be shut out of the kingdom of heaven8 ,both justice and mercy join in answering yes to the first and no to the last question4 ,what1 then1 is the way of their deliverance8 ,the living may be baptized for the dead4 ,other essential ordinances may be attended to vicariously4 ,this glorious truth1 hid from human knowledge for centuries1 has been made known in this greatest of all divine dispensations4 ,it is indeed light in the midst of darkness4 ,it shines in the depths of the shrouded past1 illuminates the mystic future1 and reveals the infinite love of ,god and ,his tender mercy over all ,his works4 ,it explains the meaning of scripture texts long considered difficult and obscure4 ,it links by loving ties the living with their dead4 ,it shows why the fathers without us cannot be made perfect4 ,it opens the way of redemption for the hosts of departed heathens4 ,it brings together in one all who are in ,christ1 even though parted by the vail that is drawn between the physical and spiritual spheres4 ,it gives men and women the power to become ,saviors on ,mount ,zion1 ,jesus being the great ,captain in the army of redeemers4 ,in ,god's house all things are done in order4 ,there is a right way and a proper place for the administration of ordinances for the dead4 ,the living relatives of those who have departed without an opportunity of obeying the earthly requirements of the plan of salvation1 if they have themselves been born of the water and of the spirit1 stand in the name and place of the departed and receive the ordinances to be placed to the credit of the dead4 ,either sex represents its own4 ,men are not baptized for women1 nor women for men4 ,the first-born son in each family has rights of priority connected with this vicarious work if he has proven himself worthy4 ,the ordinances must be administered by those having authority1 being set apart for the work1 and must be duly witnessed and properly recorded4 ,the books on earth must tally with the records in heaven4 ,the place for these administrations is in a temple built to the ,most ,high ,god1 after the pattern revealed4 ,the baptismal font1 like the brazen sea in the temple of ,solomon1 is placed in the basement1 under the place where the living are wont to assemble1 typifying the place for the dead1 all things spiritual having their correspondence with things natural4 ,that which is done on earth1 according to the divine instructions1 is acknowledged in heaven1 and is of force and effect in the world to come4 ,herein is manifested the power of the ,holy ,priesthood1 loosing or binding on earth1 and it is loosed or bound in heaven1 all according to the commandments and revelation of the ,most ,high through ,jesus the anointed4 ,this principle of proxy runs like a thread of gold throughout the entire robe of salvation4 ,christ is the proxy of blood for the whole race of sinners4 ,the ,spotless ,one died in the place of the impure4 ,he is the offering for the deadly sin of ,adam4 ,he is the propitiation for the evil deeds of a world4 ,the lamb on the smoking altar1 the scapegoat turned into the wilderness1 the sprinkling of atonement1 all the sacrifices of the old covenant1 as well as the infinite one of the new1 are based on the doctrine of vicarious action and the divine acceptance of authorized substitutes4 ,the manifestation of this truth in the last dispensation came from the ,prophet ,elijah in the temple built to the ,almighty by the ,latter-day ,saints in ,kirtland1 ,ohio4 ,on the third of ,april1 #ahcf1 he who was caught up to heaven without death1 appeared to ,joseph ,smith and ,oliver ,cowdery1 and committed the keys of the power to turn the heart of the fathers to the children1 and the heart of the children to their fathers1 that the earth might be saved from a curse4 ,the living are thus authorized1 under prescribed conditions1 to act for the dead1 and the fathers in the spirit world look to the children in the flesh to perform for them the works which they were unable to attend to while in the body4 ,here is the peculiar blessing upon the heads of the ,saints in the grand1 culminating and completing dispensation of the fullness of times4 ,to labor for the redemption of their progenitors until every lost link in the line of their ancestry1 back to the ,abrahamic stock from which they originally sprang1 shall be taken up and welded into the perfect family chain4 ,herein is seen one of the blessings attending the perpetuation of a man's name in the earth2 to die leaving no seed being considered in olden times1 among the people of ,god1 one of the greatest of calamities4 ,indeed the glory and dominion1 and joy and rapture of the future state will be found to have intimate relation to the family condition1 and the promise to ,abraham of a numerous posterity was not merely of earthly portent1 but reached into the exaltation and beatitudes of eternal existence4 ,this glorious doctrine bears the key to the sphere within the vail4 ,it regulates the communion of the living with the dead4 ,it saves those who receive it from improper and deceptive spirit communications4 ,tidings to the living from their friends who have passed away do not come in disorder and confusion1 nor by the will of men or women1 whether corrupt or pure4 ,order is maintained in all the works and ways of ,god4 ,knowledge that is needful concerning the spiritual sphere will come through an appointed channel and in the appointed place4 ,the temple where the ordinances can be administered for the dead1 is the place to hear from the dead4 ,the ,priesthood in the flesh1 when it is necessary1 will receive communications from the ,priesthood behind the vail4 ,most holy conversations on all things pertaining to the redemption of the race1 belong in the places prepared in the temples4 ,the ,saints in the flesh are required to use all due diligence in obtaining their genealogies by the means at command1 and a spirit has moved upon men in the world to collect and perfect and publish the records of their ancestors1 by which1 thousands upon thousands of acceptable names have been obtained1 and the work of vicarious baptism already done is immense4 ,but that which remains to be accomplished is so vast1 that no mind1 unless illuminated by the light of ,god1 can see how it can ever be performed and perfected4 ,yet it will be done1 and blessed are they who aid in the heavenly labor6 ,with what joy will they be greeted by the spirits of their progenitors when they meet them in ,paradise6 ,what honor will crown their brows in the day of reward and compensation6 ,they will stand among the saviors1 and shine among their kindred who are redeemed1 like glorious suns in the heavenly constellations6 ,this divine plan of vicarious action1 is one of the broadest1 brightest and loveliest leaves in the blessed tree of life4 ,it bears a healing balm for millions upon millions of earth's sons and daughters who have passed away without hearing the only name whereby man can be saved1 or who1 having heard1 were never taught the way of salvation as ordained through ,jesus ,christ4 ,it is redolent of the love and mercy of the ,eternal ,father1 and bears the sweet perfume of charity and gratitude of the children reaching out after the fathers1 of the fathers blest in the works of the children1 and of kindred affection enlarged1 cemented and perpetuated for ever and ever4 ,it parts the vail between the physical and the spiritual1 it softens the heart1 and brings the living and the dead nearer to ,god1 and it the tree of death whose fruit was forbidden1 descends to all generations1 and every variety of form and feature1 and color and stature1 and tendency and peculiarity1 have the one common characteristic1 the certainty of death4 ,but is the dissolution of the body the end of existence8 ,not at all4 ,we have seen that the part of man that comes from heaven lives on when that which comes from the earth returns to the earth4 ,yet this is not sufficient4 ,the query arises1 ,shall this body1 made mortal through transgression1 remain for ever under the penalty of the broken law1 or are there some means of expiation for the sin1 and restoration from the doom1 its consequence8 ,are all the associations formed in the flesh and pertaining to this mortal state1 to perish with the decayed signification of the word resurrect is to stand up again4 ,that which was laid down was to be raised up4 ,the release of the immortal spirit from the mortal body would not answer to this4 ,it was this mortal that was to put on immortality1 this corruptible that was to put on incorruption4 ,to make this matter certain1 ,jesus1 who expiated the primal sin1 after being offered on the cross as the great sacrifice1 gave up the ghost4 ,his lifeless body was taken down1 embalmed and buried in a new tomb hewed out of the rock4 ,it was guarded by ,roman soldiers4 ,on the third day from the interment that body came forth alive from the grave4 ,the same ,jesus who was crucified appeared again among ,his disciples1 and proved that the same body interred was brought forth again1 by exhibiting the wounds made by the nails and the spear1 by permitting them to touch ,him1 by eating and conversing with them1 and by repeated visits4 ,this was not a mere manifestation of the immortality of the soul1 but a demonstration of the resurrection of the body4 ,yet that body was transformed4 ,the corruptible blood was purged from the veins1 and incorruptible spiritual fluid occupied its place4 ,it was buried a natural body1 it was resurrected a spiritual body4 ,here then1 was a pattern of that which is to come4 ,this was the first fruits of them that slept1 a glorious sample of the great harvest of the summer of redemption4 ,now the sacrifice of the ,savior had as one of its chief objects the restoration of mankind to the condition lost by the fall4 ,as in ,adam all die1 even so in ,christ shall all be made alive4 ,death came to the race through one man's sin2 life comes to the race through one man's atonement for that sin4 ,the remedy is as broad as the disease4 ,the plan is perfect4 ,this is why ,christ is called ,the resurrection and the life4 ,by virtue of ,his triumph over sin and ,his voluntary submission to death1 which had no valid claim upon ,him1 being sinless1 ,he obtained the keys of redemption for all the sleeping dust of the ,adamic family4 ,so ,he made no idle boast or mystic figure of speech when he declared1 ,the hour is coming1 in which all that are in the graves accordingly4 ,but all will be redeemed in due season from the grave and stand the scrutiny of the ,all-,seeing ,eye and the judgment of unswerving ,justice1 which will determine their eternal future4 ,in this age of general doubt1 when human reason is exalted above divine testimony1 and the voice of faith is drowned by the clamors of pretended science1 the possibility and use of a resuscitation of the body are scouted and denied4 ,but all things are possible to them that believe1 and the divinely illuminated mind can perceive not only the use1 but the necessity of the resurrection4 ,the being that was placed in ,eden and endowed with power to wield dominion over all created things1 was a living soul1 a sentient spirit in an immortal body1 a man fashioned in the image of ,god4 ,he fell from that condition and paid the penalty of death4 ,christ's atonement1 as we have seen restores him to his original condition4 ,but this he cannot have without his body again made immortal4 ,by the whole creation vibrates with pleasure and responds with praise4 ,the ushering in of the great millennial day1 a glimpse of which has been seen by all the holy prophets since the world began1 with the sweet rest of earth and its inhabitants1 is not1 however1 the completion of ,christ's glorious work4 ,his kingdom must not only be established from pole to pole and from shore to shore1 but ,his saving power must penetrate to every lost soul of our race in1 the regions of the damned4 ,a just judgment will be meted out to all4 ,they who reject the gospel must suffer the penalty4 ,those who are found worthy of many stripes must receive their portion4 ,the wicked will be turned into hell1 with all the nations that forget ,god4 ,each condemned person will pay the uttermost farthing for his sins4 ,justice1 tempered1 not warped or thwarted1 by mercy1 will mete out to all their right deserts1 every man according to ,his works4 ,the punishment is always existent1 therefore it is eternal punishment4 ,but each one who suffers1 receives only his just portion thereof4 ,shall the murderer and the ,sabbath-breaker1 the adulterer and the thief1 the drunkard and the profane1 all merit the same doom8 ,would human courts proclaim such judgment8 ,shall man have more equity than ,god8 ,when stern justice has claimed its own and filled its purpose1 shall there be no place for sweet mercy8 ,while there is one soul of this race1 willing and able to accept and obey the laws of redemption1 no matter where or in what condition it may be found1 ,christ's work will be incomplete until that being is brought up from death and hell1 and placed in a position of progress1 upward and onward1 in such glory as is possible for its enjoyment and the service of the great ,god4 ,the punishment inflicted will be adequate to the wrongs performed4 ,in one sense the sinner will always suffer its effects4 ,when the debt is paid and justice is satisfied2 when obedience is learned through the lessons of sad experience2 when the grateful and subdued soul comes forth from the everlasting punishment1 thoroughly willing to comply with the laws once rejected2 there will be an abiding sense of loss4 ,the fullness of celestial glory in the presence and society of ,god and the ,lamb are beyond the reach of that saved but not perfected soul1 forever4 ,the power of increase1 wherein is dominion and exaltation1 and crowns of immeasurable glory1 is not for the class of beings who have been thrust down to hell and endured the wrath of ,god for the period allotted by eternal judgment4 ,but ,jesus1 the anointed1 with ,his army of saviors bearing the ,priesthood after the order of ,melchisedec1 will seek and save that which is lost until everything salvable is redeemed4 ,only those beings who have learned the law1 received of the light of truth1 tasted the sweets of the divine spirit1 basked in the sunbeams of the heavenly glory1 made covenant to serve the ,king of kings and received power to advance to the pinnacle1 of exaltation1 and then have turned away from the right1 chosen evil rather than good1 driven away the power and promptings of the ,spirit of light and truth1 sought to become a law unto themselves1 imbrued their hands in the blood of innocence or1 drinking in of the influence of that evil one1 consented to and endorsed the slaying of the world's ,redeemer1 thus sinning against the ,holy ,ghost and becoming servants of ,satan and sons of perdition1 will be in their nature and status unredeemable1 and therefore will remain filthy still and thus be unfit for a kingdom of any degree of glory4 ,those will go away with the devil and his angels into the outer darkness1 beyond the spheres where flows the river of salvation and where blooms the tree of life4 ,for them alone of ,adam's race there is no repentance1 for them alone is the second death1 for them alone is the blackness of darkness forever4 ,when the work of ,christ and ,his associate kings and priests unto ,god is finished1 the saints of all the ages will be crowned with glory and receive their reward4 ,they will be made rulers over many things4 ,in the order of eternity1 they will stand in the heavenly family organization1 and all things will be theirs4 ,of their increase there will be no end4 ,they will hold the key to all heights and depths4 ,they will have power over all the elements1 spiritual and corporeal4 ,the incorruptible and fadeless riches will be theirs4 ,they will mingle with the highest4 ,they will gaze upon the face of the ,eternal ,god and dwell in the presence of the sinless ,son4 ,pain and sorrow1 and trial and death will henceforth be only known in memory1 to form the contrast needful to make their joy complete4 ,eternity with its boundless opportunities and unutterable bliss and intelligence and majesty will be before them without a barrier in the way1 secure for them as to the ,almighty ,father himself4 ,this is the celestial glory4 ,those who were not numbered with the ,saints of ,god in the flesh1 but who received the gospel in the spirit2 the good and honorable who were led astray by the designing2 the class not fitted for the crowning glory of the celestial world nor worthy of the doom of the wicked1 will also receive their portion4 ,they will not attain to the gifts of increase and dominion and the fullness of the highest1 but will enter into their rest1 which shall be glorious4 ,and though they reach not to the ,father's fullness1 they will receive the visits of the ,son and of ,his associates in the celestial world1 and enjoy rich blessings unspeakable in their greatness and perpetuity4 ,they inherit the terrestrial glory4 ,those who were cast down to the depths for their sins1 who rejected the gospel of ,jesus1 who persecuted the saints1 who reveled in iniquity1 who committed all manner of transgressions except the unpardonable crime1 will also come forth in the ,lord's time1 through the blood of the ,lamb and the ministry of ,his disciples and their own repentance and willing acceptance of divine law1 and enter into the various degrees of glory and power and progress and light1 according to their different capacities and adaptabilities4 ,they cannot go up into the society of the ,father nor receive of the presence of the ,son1 but will have ministrations of messengers from the terrestrial world1 and have joy beyond all expectation and the conception of uninspired mortal minds4 ,they will all bow the knee to ,christ and serve ,god the ,father1 and have an eternity of usefulness and happiness in harmony with the higher powers4 ,they receive the telestial glory4 ,thus the inhabitants of earth1 with the few exceptions that are beyond the power of redemption1 will eventually be saved4 ,and the globe on which they passed their probation1 having kept the law of its being1 will come into remembrance before its ,maker4 ,it will die like its products4 ,but it will be quickened again and resurrected in the celestial glory4 ,it has been born of the water1 it will also be born of the ,spirit4 ,purified by fire from all the corruptions that once defiled it1 developed into its perfections as one of the family of worlds fitted for the ,creator's presence1 all its latent light awakened into scintillating action1 it will move up into its place among the orbs governed by celestial time1 and shining like a sea of glass mingled with fire1 every tint and color of the heavenly bow radiating from its surface1 the ransomed of the ,lord will dwell upon it2 the highest beings of the ancient orbs will visit it2 the garden of ,god will again adorn it2 the heavenly government will prevail in every part2 ,jesus will reign as its ,king2 the river of life will flow out from the regal throne2 the tree of life1 whose leaves were for the healing of the nations1 will flourish upon the banks of the heavenly stream1 and its golden fruit will be free for the white-robed throng1 that they may eat and live forever4 ,this perfected earth and its saved inhabitants will then be presented to the ,eternal ,father as the finished work of ,christ1 and all things will be subject unto the ,great ,patriarch1 ,architect1 ,creator1 ,ruler1 the ,almighty1 to whom be obedience and reverence and praise in all the countless worlds that shine as jewels in ,his universal crown6 ,,the
