,the ,lectures on ,faith ,,lecture ,,first ,on the ,doctrine of the ,church of the ,latter ,day ,saints4 ,of ,faith4 ,section #a4 #a4 ,faith being the first principle in revealed religion1 and the foundation of all righteousness1 necessarily claims the first place in a course of lectures which are designed to unfold to the understanding the doctrine of ,jesus ,christ4 #b4 ,in presenting the subject of faith1 we shall observe the following order-- #c4 first1 faith itself--what it is4 #d4 ,secondly1 the object on which it rests4 ,and1 #e4 ,thirdly1 the effects which flow from it4 #f4 ,agreeable to this order we have first to show what faith is4 #g4 ,the author of the epistle to the ,hebrews1 in the eleventh chapter of that epistle and first verse1 gives the following definition of the word faith3 #h4 ,now faith is the substance 7assurance7 of things hoped for1 the evidence of things not seen4 #i4 ,from this we learn that faith is the assurance which men have of the existence of things which they have not seen1 and the principle of action in all intelligent beings4 #aj4 ,if men were duly to consider themselves1 and turn their thoughts and reflections to the operations of their own minds1 they would readily discover that it is faith1 and faith only1 which is the moving cause of all action in them2 that without it both mind and body would be in a state of inactivity1 and all their exertions would cease1 both physical and mental4 #aa4 ,were this class to go back and reflect upon the history of their lives1 from the period of their first recollection1 and ask themselves what principle excited them to action1 or what gave them energy and activity in all their lawful avocations1 callings1 and pursuits1 what would be the answer8--,would it not be that it was the assurance which they had of the existence of things which they had not seen as yet8 ,was it not the hope which you had1 in consequence of your belief in the existence of unseen things1 which stimulated you to action and exertion in order to obtain them8 ,are you not dependent on your faith1 or belief1 for the acquisition of all knowledge1 wisdom1 and intelligence8 ,would you exert yourselves to obtain wisdom and intelligence1 unless you did believe that you could obtain them8 ,would you have ever sown1 if you had not believed that you would reap8 ,would you have ever planted1 if you had not believed that you would gather8 ,would you have ever asked1 unless you had believed that you would receive8 ,would you have ever sought1 unless you had believed that you would have found8 ,or1 would you have ever knocked1 unless you had believed that it would have been opened unto you8 ,in a word1 is there anything that you would have done1 either physical or mental1 if you had not previously believed8 ,are not all your exertions1 of every kind1 dependent on your faith8 ,or1 may we not ask1 what have you1 or what do you possess1 which you have not obtained by reason of your faith8 ,your food1 your raiment1 your lodgings1 are they not all by reason of your faith8 ,reflect1 and ask yourselves if these things are not so4 ,turn your thoughts on your own minds1 and see if faith is not the moving cause of all action in yourselves2 and1 if the moving cause in you1 is it not in all other intelligent beings8 #ab4 ,and as faith is the moving cause of all action in temporal concerns1 so it is in spiritual2 for the ,savior has said1 and that truly1 that he that believeth and is baptized1 shall be saved4 ,mark #af3af4 #ac4 ,as we receive by faith1 all temporal blessings that we do receive1 so we1 in like manner1 receive by faith all spiritual blessings1 that we do receive4 ,but faith is not only the principle of action1 but of power also1 in all intelligent beings whether in heaven or on earth4 ,thus says the author of the epistle to the ,hebrews1 #aa3c3 #ad4 ,through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of ,god3 so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear4 #ae4 ,by this we understand that the principle of power1 which existed in the bosom of ,god1 by which the worlds were framed1 was faith2 and that it is by reason of this principle of power existing in the ,deity1 that all created things exist--so that all things in heaven1 on earth1 or under the earth1 exist by reason of faith as it existed in ,,him4 #af4 ,had it not been for the principle of faith the worlds would never have been framed1 neither would man have been formed of the dust--,it is the principle by which ,jehovah works1 and through which he exercises power over all temporal as well as eternal things4 ,take this principle or attribute1 7for it is an attribute7 from the ,deity and he would cease to exist4 #ag4 ,who cannot see1 that if ,god framed the worlds by faith1 that it is by faith that he exercises power over them1 and that faith is the principle of power8 ,and if the principle of power1 it must be so in man as well as in the ,deity8 ,this is the testimony of all the sacred writers1 and the lesson which they have been endeavouring to teach to man4 #ah4 ,the ,saviour says ,matthew #ag3ai1bj1 in explaining the reason why the disciples could not cast out the devil1 that it was because of their unbelief3 ,for verily ,i say unto you1 said he1 if ye have faith as a grain of mustard--seed1 ye shall say unto this mountain1 ,remove hence to you yonder place6 and it shall remove3 and nothing shall be impossible unto you4 #ai4 ,moroni1 while abridging and compiling the record of his fathers1 has given us the following account of faith as the principle of power3 ,he says1 page #efc1 that it was the faith of ,alma and ,amulek which caused the walls of the prison to be rent1 as recorded on the #bfdth page2 that it was the faith of ,nephi and ,lehi which caused a change to be wrought upon the hearts of the ,lamanites1 when they were immersed with the ,holy ,spirit1 and with fire1 as seen on the #dbast page2 and that it was by faith that the mountain ,zerin was removed1 when the brother of ,jared spake in the name of the ,lord4 ,see also #efeth page4 #bj4 ,in addition to this we are told in ,hebrews #aa3cb1cc1cd1ce1 that ,gideon1 ,barak1 ,samson1 ,jephthah1 ,david1 ,samuel1 and the prophets1 through faith subdued kingdoms1 wrought righteousness1 obtained promises1 stopped the mouths of lions1 quenched the violence of fire1 escaped the edge of the sword1 out of weakness were made strong1 waxed valiant in fight1 turned to flight the armies of the aliens1 and that women received their dead raised to life again1 c41 c4 #ba4 ,also1 ,joshua1 in the sight of all ,israel1 bade the sun and moon to stand still1 and it was done4 ,josh4 #aj3ab4 #bb4 ,we here understand1 that the sacred writers say1 that all these things were done by faith--,it was by faith that the worlds were framed--,god spake1 chaos heard1 and worlds came into order1 by reason of the faith there was in ,,him4 ,so with man also--he spake by faith in the name of ,god1 and the sun stood still1 the moon obeyed1 mountains removed1 prisons fell1 lions' mouths were closed1 the human heart lost its enmity1 fire its violence1 armies their power1 the sword its terror1 and death its dominion2 and all this by reason of the faith which was in him4 #bc4 ,had it not been for the faith which was in men1 they might have spoken to the sun1 the moon1 the mountains1 prisons1 the human heart1 fire1 armies1 the sword1 or to death in vain6 #bd4 ,faith1 then1 is the first great governing principle which has power1 dominion1 and authority over all things2 by it they exist1 by it they are upheld1 by it they are changed1 or by it they remain1 agreeably to the will of ,god4 ,without it1 there is no power1 and without power there could be no creation1 nor existence6 ,,of ,,theology ,question4--,what is theology8 ,answer4--,it is that revealed science which treats of the being and attributes of ,god--his relations to shall proceed to show secondly the object on which it rests4 #b4 ,we here observe that ,god is the only supreme governor and independent being1 in whom all fullness and perfection dwells2 who is omnipotent1 omnipresent1 and omniscient2 without beginning of days or end of life2 and that in him every good gift and every good principle dwell2 and that he is the ,father of lights2 ,in him the principle of faith dwells independently1 and he is the object in whom the faith of all other rational and accountable beings center1 for life and salvation4 #c4 ,in order to present this part of the subject in a clear and conspicuous point of light1 it is necessary to go back and show the evidences which mankind have had1 and the foundation on which these evidences are1 or were based1 since the creation1 to believe in the existence of a ,god4 #d4 ,we do not mean those evidences which are manifested by the works of creation1 which we daily behold with our natural eyes3 we are sensible that1 after a revelation of ,jesus ,christ1 the works of creation1 throughout their vast forms and varieties1 clearly exhibit his eternal power and ,godhead4 ,romans #a3bj4 ,for the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen1 being understood by the things that are made1 even his eternal power and ,godhead4 ,but we mean those evidences by which the first thoughts were suggested to the mind of men that there was a ,god who created all things4 #e4 ,we shall now proceed to examine the situation of man at his first creation4 ,moses1 the historian1 has given us the following account of him in the first chap4 of the book of ,genesis1 beginning with the #bjth verse1 and closing with the #cjth4 ,we copy from the ,new ,translation3 #f4 ,and the ,lord ,god said unto the ,only ,begotten1 who was with him from the beginning1 ,let us make man in our image1 after our likeness3 and it was done4 #g4 ,and the ,lord ,god said1 ,let them have dominion over the fishes of the sea1 and over the fowl of the air1 and over the cattle1 and over all the earth1 and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth4 #h4 ,so ,god created man in his own image1 in the image of the ,only ,begotten created he him2 male and female created ,i them4 ,and ,god blessed them1 and ,god said unto them ,be fruitful1 and multiply1 and replenish the earth1 and subdue it3 and have dominion over the fish of the sea1 and over the fowl of the air1 and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth4 #i4 ,and ,i1 ,god1 said unto man1 ,behold1 ,i have given you every herb bearing seed1 which is upon the face of all the earth1 and every tree in the which shall be the fruit of a tree yielding seed2 to you it shall be for meat4 #aj4 ,again1 ,genesis #b3ae1af1ag1ai1bj3 ,and the ,lord ,god took the man1 and put him into the garden of ,eden1 to dress it and to keep it4 ,and the ,lord ,god1 commanded the man1 saying1 ,of every tree of the garden you may freely eat3 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat of it1 neither shall you touch it1 nevertheless1 you may choose for yourself1 for it is given unto you2 but remember that ,i forbid it1 for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die4 #aa4 ,and out of the ground the ,lord ,god formed every beast of the field1 and every fowl of the air1 and commanded that they should come unto ,adam1 to see what he would call them4 99 99 99 ,and whatsoever ,adam called every living creature1 that was the name thereof4 ,and ,adam gave names to all cattle1 and to the fowl of the air1 and to every beast of the field4 #ab4 ,from the foregoing we learn man's situation at his first creation2 the knowledge with which he was endowed1 and the high and exalted station in which he was placed--lord1 or governor of all things on earth1 and at the same time enjoying communion and intercourse with his ,maker1 without a vail to separate between4 ,we shall next proceed to examine the account given of his fall1 and of his being driven out of the garden of ,eden1 and from the presence of the ,lord4 #ac4 ,moses proceeds3 ,and they ,adam and ,eve heard the voice of the ,lord ,god1 as they were walking in the garden in the cool of the day1 and ,adam and his wife went to hide themselves from the presence of the ,lord ,god amongst the trees of the garden4 ,and the ,lord ,god called unto ,adam1 and said unto him1 ,where goest you8 ,and he said1 ,i heard your voice in the garden1 and ,i was afraid1 because ,i beheld that ,i was naked1 and ,i hid myself4 #ad4 ,and the ,lord ,god1 said unto ,adam1 ',who told you that you were naked8 ,have you eaten of the tree whereof ,i told you you should not eat8 ,if so1 you should surely die8' ,and the man said1 ,the woman whom you gave me1 and commanded that she should remain with me1 gave me of the fruit of the tree1 and ,i did eat4 #ae4 ,and ,i1 the ,lord ,god1 said unto the woman1 ,what is this thing which you hast done8 ,and the woman said1 ,the serpent beguiled me1 and ,i did eat4 #af4 ,and again1 the ,lord said unto the woman1 ,i will greatly multiply your sorrow1 and your conception4 ,in sorrow you shall bring forth children2 and your desire shall be to your husband1 and he shall rule over you4 #ag4 ,and the ,lord ,god said unto ,adam1 because you have hearkened unto the voice of your wife1 and have eaten of the fruit of the tree of which ,i commanded yous1 saying1 ,you shall not eat of it6 cursed shall be the ground for your sake2 in sorrow you shall eat of it all the days of your life4 ,thorns also1 and thistles shall it bring forth to you3 and you shall eat the herb of the field4 ,by the sweat of your face shall you eat bread1 until you shall return unto the ground--for you shall surely die--for out of it you were taken3 for dust you were1 and unto dust you shall return4 ,this was immediately followed by the fulfillment of what we previously said3 ,man was driven1 or sent out of ,eden4 #ah4 ,two important items are shown from the former quotations3 ,first1 after man was created1 he was not left without intelligence1 or understanding1 to wander in darkness and spend an existence in ignorance and doubt--on the great and important point which effected his happiness1--as to the real fact by whom he was created1 or unto whom he was amenable for his conduct4 ,god conversed with him face to face3 in his presence he was permitted to stand1 and from his own mouth he was permitted to receive instruction--he heard his voice1 walked before him1 and gazed upon his glory--while intelligence burst upon his understanding1 and enabled him to give names to the vast assemblage of his ,maker's works4 #ai4 ,secondly1 we have seen1 that though man did transgress1 his transgression did not deprive him of the previous knowledge with which he was endowed1 relative to the existence and glory of his ,creator2 for no sooner did he hear his voice1 than he sought to hide himself from his presence4 #bj4 ,having shown1 then1 in the first instance1 that ,god began to converse with man1 immediately after he breathed into his nostrils the breath of life1 and that he did not cease to manifest himself to him1 even after his fall1 we shall next proceed to show1 that1 though he was cast out from the garden of ,eden1 his knowledge of the existence of ,god was not lost1 neither did ,god cease to manifest his will unto him4 #ba4 ,we next proceed to present the account of the direct revelation which man received1 after he was cast out of ,eden1 and further copy from the ,new ,translation3 #bb4 ,after ,adam had been driven out of the garden1 he began to till the earth1 and to have dominion over all the beasts of the field1 and to eat his bread by the sweat of his brow1 as ,i the ,lord had commanded him3 and he called upon the name of the ,lord1 and so did ,eve his wife also4 ,and they heard the voice of the ,lord from the way toward the garden of ,eden1 speaking unto them2 and they saw him not1 for they were shut out from his presence2 and he gave unto them commandments that they should worship the ,lord their ,god1 and should offer the firstlings of their flocks for an offering unto the ,lord4 ,and ,adam was obedient unto the commandments of the ,lord4 #bc4 ,and after many days an angel of the ,lord appeared unto ,adam1 saying1 ,why do you offer sacrifices unto the ,lord8 ,and ,adam said unto him1 ,i know not2 but the ,lord commanded me to offer sacrifices4 #bd4 ,and then the angel said unto him1 ,this thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the ,only ,begotten of the ,father1 who is full of grace and truth4 ,and you shall do all that you do in the name of the ,son3 and you shall repent and call upon ,god in the name of the ,son forever4 ,and in that day the ,holy ,ghost fell upon ,adam1 and bore record of the ,father and the ,son4 #be4 ,this last quotation1 or summary1 shows this important fact1 that though our first parents were driven out of the garden of ,eden1 and were even separated from the presence of ,god1 by a vail1 they still retained a knowledge of his existence1 and that sufficiently to move them to call upon him4 ,and further1 that no sooner was the plan of redemption revealed to man1 and he began to call upon ,god1 than the ,holy ,spirit was given1 bearing record of the ,father and ,son4 #bf4 ,moses also gives us an account1 in the #dth of ,genesis1 of the transgression of ,cain1 and the righteousness of ,abel1 and of the revelations of ,god to them4 ,he says3 ,in process of time1 ,cain brought of the fruit of the ground1 an offering unto the ,lord4--,and ,abel also brought of the firstlings of his flock1 and of the fat thereof4 ,and the ,lord had respect unto ,abel1 and to his offering3 but unto ,cain and to his offering he had not respect4 ,now ,satan knew this1 and it pleased him4 ,and ,cain was very wroth1 and his countenance fell4 ,and the ,lord said unto ,cain1 ,why are you angry8 ,why is your countenance fallen8 ,if you do well1 will you not be accepted8--,and if you do not well1 sin lieth at the door1 and ,satan desires to have you2 and except you shall hearken unto my commandments1 ,i will deliver you up3 and it shall be unto you according to his desire4 #bg4 ,and ,cain went into the field1 and talked with his brother ,abel4 ,and while they were in the field1 ,cain rose up against his brother ,abel1 and slew him4 ,and ,cain gloried in what he had done1 saying1 ,i am free2 surely the flocks of my brother will now fall into my hands4 #bh4 ,but the ,lord said unto ,cain1 ,where is ,abel1 your brother8 ,and he said1 ,i know not3 am ,i my brother's keeper8 ,and the ,lord said1 ,what have you done8 the voice of your brother's blood cries unto me from the ground4 ,and now1 you shall be cursed from the earth which hath opened her mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand4 ,when you till the ground1 it shall not henceforth yield unto you her strength4 ,a fugitive and a vagabond you shall be in the earth4 #bi4 ,and ,cain said unto the ,lord1 ,satan tempted me because of my brother's flocks4 ,and ,i was angry3 for his offering you accepted and mine was not3 ,my punishment is greater than ,i can bear4 ,behold you have driven me out this day from the face of men1 and from your face shall ,i be hid also2 and ,i shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth2 and it shall come to pass that he that findeth me will slay me because of mine iniquities1 for these things are not hid from the ,lord4 ,and the ,lord said unto him1 ,therefore1 whoever slays ,cain1 vengeance shall be taken on him seven fold4 ,and the ,lord set a mark upon ,cain1 lest any finding him should kill him4 #cj4 ,the object of the foregoing quotations is to show to this class the way by which mankind were first made acquainted with the existence of a ,god3 that it was by a manifestation of ,god to man1 and that ,god continued1 after man's transgression to manifest himself to him and to his posterity2 and1 notwithstanding they were separated from his immediate presence1 that they could not see his face1 they continued to hear his voice4 #ca4 ,adam thus being made acquainted with ,god1 communicated the knowledge which he had unto his posterity2 and it was through this means that the thought was first suggested to their minds that there was a ,god4 ,which laid the foundation for the exercise of their faith1 through which they could obtain a knowledge of his character and also of his glory4 #cb4 ,not only was there a manifestation made unto ,adam of the existence of a ,god1 but ,moses informs us1 as before quoted1 that ,god condescended to talk with ,cain after his great transgression1 in slaying his brother1 and that ,cain knew that it was the ,lord that was talking with him3 so that when he was driven out from the presence of his brethren1 he carried with him the knowledge of the existence of a ,god2 and1 through this means1 doubtless1 his posterity became acquainted with the fact that such a being existed4 #cc4 ,from this we can see that the whole human family1 in the early age of their existence1 in all their different branches1 had this knowledge disseminated among them2 so that the existence of ,god became an object of faith1 in the early age of the world4 ,and the evidences which these men had of the existence of a ,god1 was the testimony of their fathers in the first instance4 #cd4 ,the reason why we have been thus particular on this part of our subject1 is that this class may see by what means it was that ,god became an object of faith among men after the fall2 and what it was that stirred up the faith of multitudes to feel after him2 to search after a knowledge of his character1 perfections and attributes1 until they became extensively acquainted with him2 and not only commune with him1 and behold his glory1 but be partakers of his power and stand in his presence4 #ce4 ,let this class mark particularly that the testimony which these men had of the existence of a ,god1 was the testimony of man2 for previous to the time that any of ,adam's posterity had obtained a manifestation of ,god to themselves1 ,adam their common father had testified unto them of the existence of ,god1 and of his eternal power and ,godhead4 #cf4 ,for instance1 ,abel1 before he received the assurance from heaven that his offerings were acceptable unto ,god1 had received the important information of his father that such a being did exist1 who had created and who did uphold all things4 ,neither can there be a doubt existing on the mind of any person1 that ,adam was the first who did communicate the knowledge of the existence of a ,god1 to his posterity2 and that the whole faith of the world1 from that time down to the present1 is in a certain degree1 dependent on the knowledge first communicated to them by their common progenitor2 and it has been handed down to the day and generation in which we live1 as we shall show from the face of the sacred records4 #cg4 ,first1 ,adam was #acj years old when ,seth was born4 ,genesis #e3c4 ,and the days of ,adam1 after he had begotten ,seth1 were #hjj years2 making him #icj years old when he died4 ,genesis #e3d1e4 ,seth was #aje when ,enos was born4 #e3f4 ,enos was #ij when ,cainan was born4 #e3i4 ,cainan was #gj when ,mahalaleel was born4 #e3ab4 ,mahalaleel was #fe when ,jared was born4 #e3ae4 ,jared was #afb when ,enoch was born4 #e3ah4 ,enoch was #fe when ,methuselah was born4 #e3ba4 ,methuselah was #ahg when ,lamech was born4 #e3be4 ,lamech was #ahb when ,noah was born4 #e3bh4 #ch4 ,from this account it appears that ,lamech1 the #ith from ,adam1 and the father of ,noah1 was #ef years old when ,adam died2 ,methuselah1 #bdc2 ,enoch1 #cjh2 ,jared1 #dgj2 ,mahalaleel1 #ece2 ,cainan1 #fje2 ,enos1 #fie2 and ,seth1 #hjj4 #ci4 ,so that ,lamech the father of ,noah2 ,methuselah1 ,enoch1 ,jared1 ,mahalaleel1 ,cainan1 ,enos1 ,seth1 and ,adam1 were all living at the same time1 and beyond all controversy1 were all preachers of righteousness4 #dj4 ,moses further informs us1 that ,seth lived1 after he begat ,enos1 #hjg years1 making him #iab years old at his death4 ,genesis #e3g1h4 ,and ,enos lived1 after he begat ,cainan1 #hae years1 making him #ije years old when he died4 #e3aj1aa4 ,and ,cainan lived1 after he begat ,mahalaleel1 #hdj years3 making him #iaj years old at his death4 #e3ac1ad4 ,and ,mahalaleel lived after he begat ,jared1 #hcj years1 making him #hie years old when he died4 #e3af1ag4 ,and ,jared lived after he begat ,enoch1 #hjj years1 making him #ifb years old at his death4 #e3ai1bj4 ,and ,enoch walked with ,god1 after he begat ,methuselah #cjj years3 making him #cfe years old when he was translated4 #e3bb1bc4 ,and ,methuselah lived after he begat ,lamech1 #ghb years1 making him #ifi years old when he died #e3bf1bg4 ,lamech lived after he begat ,noah1 #eie years2 making him #ggg years old when he died4 #e3cj1ca4 #da4 ,agreeably to this account1 ,adam died in the #icjth year of the world2 ,enoch was translated in the #ihgth1 ,seth died in the #ajdbnd2 ,enos in the #aadjth2 ,cainan in the #abceth2 ,mahalaleel in the #abijth2 ,jared in the #adbbnd2 ,lamech in the #afeast2 and ,methuselah in the #afefth1 it being the same year in which the flood came4 #db4 ,so that ,noah was #hd years old when ,enos died1 #agf when ,cainan died1 #bcd when ,mahalaleel died1 #cff when ,jared died1 #eie when ,lamech died1 and #fjj when ,methuselah died4 #dc4 ,we can see from this that ,enos1 ,cainan1 ,mahalaleel1 ,jared1 ,methuselah1 ,lamech1 and ,noah1 all lived on the earth at the same time2 and that ,enos1 ,cainan1 ,mahalaleel1 ,jared1 ,methuselah1 and ,lamech1 were all acquainted with both ,adam and ,noah4 #dd4 ,from the foregoing it is easily to be seen1 not only how the knowledge of ,god came into the world1 but upon what principle it was preserved3 that from the time it was first communicated1 it was retained in the minds of righteous men1 who taught1 not only their own posterity1 but the world2 so that there was no need of a new revelation to man1 after ,adam's creation to ,noah1 to give them the first idea1 or notion of the existence of a ,god3 and not only of a ,god1 but of the true and living ,god4 #de4 ,having traced the chronology of the world from ,adam to ,noah1 we will now trace it from ,noah to ,abraham4 ,noah was #ejb years old ,when ,shem was born2 #ih years afterwards the flood came1 being the #fjjth year of ,noah's age4 ,and ,moses informs us that ,noah lived after the flood1 #cej years1 making him #iej years old when he died4 ,genesis #i3bh-bi4 #df4 ,shem was #ajj years old when ,arphaxad was born4 ,genesis #aa3aj4 ,arphaxad was #ce when ,salah was born4 ,gen4 #aa3ab4 ,salah was #cj when ,eber was born4 #aa3ad4 ,eber was #cd when ,peleg was born1 in whose days the earth was divided4 #aa3af4 ,peleg was #cj when ,reu was born4 #aa3ah4 ,reu was #cb when ,serug was born4 #aa3bj4 ,serug was #cj when ,nahor was born4 #aa3bb4 ,nahor was #bi when ,terah was born4 #aa3bd4 ,terah was #gj when ,haran and ,abraham were born4 #aa3bf4 #dg4 ,there is some difficulty in the account given by ,moses of ,abraham's birth4 ,some have supposed that ,abraham was not born until ,terah was #acj years old4 ,this conclusion is drawn from a variety of scriptures1 which are not to our purpose at present to quote4 ,neither is it a matter of any consequence to us whether ,abraham was born when ,terah was #gj years old1 or #acj4 ,but in order that there may no doubt exist upon any mind in relation to the object lying immediately before us1 in presenting the present chronology we will date the birth of ,abraham at the latest period1 that is1 when ,terah was #acj years old4 ,it appears from this account that from the flood to the birth of ,abraham1 was #ceb years4 #dh4 ,moses informs us that ,shem lived after he begat ,arphaxad1 #ejj years4 ,gen4 #aa3aa4 ,this added to #ajj years1 which was his age when ,arphaxad was born1 makes him #fjj years old when he died4 ,arphaxad lived after he begat ,salah1 #djc years4 #aa3ac4 ,this added to #ce years1 which was his age when ,salah was born1 makes him #dch years old when he died4 ,salah lived after he begat ,eber1 #djc years4 #aa3ae4--,this added to #cj years1 which was his age when ,eber was born1 makes him #dcc years old when he died4--,eber lived after he begat ,peleg1 #dcj years4 #aa3ag4 ,this added to #cd years1 which was his age when ,peleg was born1 makes him #dfd years old4 ,peleg lived after he begat ,reu1 #bji years4 #aa3ai4 ,this added to #cj years1 which was his age when ,reu was born1 makes him #bci years old when he died4 ,reu lived1 after he begat ,serug1 #bjg years4 ,gen4 #aa3ba4 ,this added to #cb years1 which was his age when ,serug was born1 makes him #bci years old when he died4 ,serug lived after he begat ,nahor1 #bjj years4 #aa3bc4 ,this added to #cj years1 which was his age when ,nahor was born1 makes him #bcj years old when he died4 ,nahor lived after he begat ,terah1 #aai years4 #aa3be4 ,this added to #bi years1 which was his age when ,terah was born1 makes him #adh years old when he died4 ,terah was #acj years old when ,abraham was born1 and is supposed to have lived #ge years after his birth3 making him #bje years old when he died4 #di4 ,agreeable to this last account1 ,peleg died in the #aiifth year of the world1 ,nahor in the #aiigth1 and ,noah in the #bjjfth4 ,so that ,peleg1 in whose days the earth was divided1 and ,nahor1 the grandfather of ,abraham1 both died before ,noah--the former being #bci years old1 and the latter #adh4 ,and who cannot but see that they must have had a long and intimate acquaintance with ,noah8 #ej4 ,reu died in the #bjbfth year of the world1 ,serug in the #bjdith1 ,terah in the #bjhcrd1 ,arphaxad in the #bjifth1 ,salah in the #babfth1 ,shem in the #baehth1 ,abraham in the #bahcrd1 and ,eber in the #bahgth3 which was four years after ,abraham's death4 ,and ,eber was the fourth from ,noah4 #ea4 ,nahor1 ,abraham's brother1 was #eh years old when ,noah died1 ,terah #abh1 ,serug #ahg1 ,reu #bai1 ,eber #bhc1 ,salah #cac1 ,arphaxad #cdd1 and ,shem #ddh4 #eb4 ,it appears from this account1 that ,nahor1 brother of ,abraham1 ,terah1 ,nahor1 ,serug1 ,reu1 ,peleg1 ,eber1 ,salah1 ,arphaxad1 ,shem1 and ,noah1 all lived on the earth at the same time4 ,and that ,abraham was #ah years old when ,reu died1 #da when ,serug and his brother ,nahor died1 #ge when ,terah died1 #hh when ,arphaxad died1 #aah when ,salah died1 #aej when ,shem died1 and that ,eber lived #d years after ,abraham's death4 ,and that ,shem1 ,arphaxad1 ,salah1 ,eber1 ,reu1 ,serug1 ,terah1 and ,nahor1 the brother of ,abraham1 and ,abraham1 lived at the same time4--,and that ,nahor1 brother of ,abraham1 ,terah1 ,serug1 ,reu1 ,eber1 ,salah1 ,arphaxad1 and ,shem1 were all acquainted with both ,noah and ,abraham4 #ec4 ,we have now traced the chronology of the world agreeable to the account given in our present ,bible1 from ,adam to ,abraham1 and have clearly determined1 beyond the power of controversy1 that there was no difficulty in preserving the knowledge of ,god in the world from the creation of ,adam1 and the manifestation made to his immediate descendants1 as set forth in the former part of this lecture1 so that the students in this class need not have any dubiety resting on their minds1 on this subject2 for they can easily see1 that it is impossible for it to be otherwise2 but that the knowledge of the existence of a ,god1 must have continued from father to son1 as a matter of tradition at least4 ,for we cannot suppose1 that a knowledge of this important fact1 could have existed in the mind of any of the before--mentioned individuals1 without their having made it known to their posterity4 #ed4 ,we have now shown how it was that the first thought ever existed in the mind of any individual1 that there was such a ,being as a ,god1 who had created and did uphold all things3 that it was by reason of the manifestation which he first made to our father ,adam1 when he stood in his presence1 and conversed with him face to face1 at the time of his creation4 #ee4 ,let us here observe1 that after any portion of the human family are made acquainted with the important fact that there is a ,god1 who has created and does uphold all things1 the extent of their knowledge1 respecting his character and glory1 will depend upon their diligence and faithfulness in seeking after him1 until like ,enoch the brother of ,jared1 and ,moses1 they shall obtain faith in ,god1 and power with him to behold him face to face4 #ef4 ,we have now clearly set forth how it is1 and how it was1 that ,god became an object of faith for rational beings2 and also1 upon what foundation the testimony was based1 which excited the inquiry and diligent search of the ancient saints1 to seek after and obtain a knowledge of the glory of ,god2 and we have seen that it was human testimony1 and human testimony only1 that excited this enquiry1 in the first instance1 in their minds--it was the credence they gave to the testimony of their fathers--this testimony having aroused their minds to inquire after the knowledge of ,god1 the enquiry frequently terminated1 indeed always terminated when rightly pursued1 in the most glorious discoveries1 and eternal certainty4 ,question4--,is there a being who has faith in himself1 independently8 ,answer4--,there is4 ,q4 ,who is it8 ,a4 ,it is ,god4 ,q4 ,how do you prove that ,god has faith in himself independently8 ,a4 ,because he is omnipotent1 omnipresent1 and omniscient2 without beginning of days or end of life1 and in him all fullness dwells4 ,eph #a3bc3 ,which is his body1 the fullness of him that filleth all in all4 ,col #a3ai4 ,for it pleased the ,father1 that in him should all fullness dwell4 ,,ii4 #b4 ,q4 ,is he the object in whom the faith of all other rational and accountable beings center1 for life and salvation8 ,a4 ,he is4 ,q4 ,how do you prove it8 ,a4 ,isa4 #de3bb4 ,look unto me and be ye saved1 all the ends of the earth3 for ,i am ,god1 and there is none else4 ,romans #aa3cd1ce1cf4 ,for who hath known the mind of the ,lord8 or who hath been his counselor8 or who hath first given to him1 and it shall be recompensed unto him again8 ,for of him1 and through him1 and to him1 are all things1 to whom be glory for ever4 ,amen4 ,isa4 #dj3 from the #hth to the #ahth verses4 ,o ,zion that bringest good tidings2 or1 ,o thou that tellest good tidings to ,zion8 get you up into the high mountain3 ,o ,jerusalem1 that bringest good tidings2 or1 ,o thou that tellest good tidings to ,jerusalem lift up thy voice with strength2 lift it up1 be not afraid2 say unto the cities of ,judah1 ,behold your ,god6 ,behold the ,lord your ,god will come with strong hand or1 against the strong2 and his arm shall rule for him3 behold1 his reward is with him1 and his work before him4 ,or1 recompense for his work4 ,he shall feed his flock like a shepherd3 he shall gather his lambs with his arms1 and carry them in his bosom1 and shall gently lead those that are with young4 ,who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand1 and meted out heaven with the span1 and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure1 weighed the mountains in scales1 and the hills in a balance8 ,who hath directed the ,spirit of the ,lord1 or being his counselor1 hath taught him8 ,with whom took he counsel1 and who instructed him and taught him in the path of judgment1 and taught him knowledge1 and shewed to him the way of understanding8 ,behold1 the nations are as a drop of a bucket and are counted as the small dust of the balance3 behold1 he taketh up the isles as a very little thing4 ,and ,lebanon is not sufficient to burn1 nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering4 ,all nations are before him as nothing1 and they are counted to him less than nothing1 and vanity4 ,jer4 #aa3ae1 #af3 ,he the ,lord hath made the earth by his power1 he hath established the world by his ,wisdom1 and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding4 ,when he uttereth his voice there is a multitude of waters in the heavens2 and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth3 he maketh lightnings with rain1 and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures4 #a ,cor #h3f ,but to us there is but one ,god1 the ,father1 of whom are all things1 and we in him2 and one ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 by whom are all things1 and we by him4 ,,ii4 #b4 ,q4 ,how did men first come to the knowledge of the existence of a ,god1 so as to exercise faith in him8 ,a4 ,in order to answer this question1 it will be necessary to go back and examine man at his creation2 the circumstances in which he was placed1 and the knowledge which he had of ,god4 ,,ii4 #c1d1e1f1g1h1i1aj1aa44 ,first1 when man was created he stood in the presence of ,god4 ,gen4 #a3bg1bh4 ,from this we earn that man1 at his creation1 stood in the presence of his ,god1 and had most perfect knowledge of his existence4 ,secondly1 ,god conversed with him after his transgression4 ,gen #c3 from the #hth to the #bbnd4 ,,ii4 #ac1ad1ae1af1ag4 ,from this we learn that1 though man did transgress1 he was not deprived of the previous knowledge which he had of the existence of ,god4 ,,ii4 #ai4 ,thirdly1 ,god conversed with man after he cast him out of the garden4 ,,ii4 #bb1bc1bd1be4 ,fourthly1 ,god also conversed with ,cain after he had slain ,abel4 ,gen #d3 from the #dth to the #fth4 ,,ii4 #bf1bg1bh1bi4 ,q4 ,what is the object of the foregoing quotation8 ,a4 ,it is that it may be clearly seen how it was that the first thoughts were suggested to the minds of men of the existence of ,god1 and how extensively this knowledge was spread among the immediate descendants of ,adam4 ,,ii4 #cj1ca1cb1cc4 ,q4 ,what testimony had the immediate descendants of ,adam1 in proof of the existence of ,god8 ,a4 ,the testimony of their father4 ,and after they were made acquainted with his existence1 by the testimony of their father1 they were dependent upon the exercise of their own faith1 for a knowledge of his character1 perfections1 and attributes4 ,,ii4 #bc1bd1be1bf4 ,q4 ,had any other of the human family1 besides ,adam1 a knowledge of the existence of ,god1 in the first instance1 by any other means than human testimony8 ,a4 ,they had not4 ,for previous to the time that they could have power to obtain a manifestation for themselves1 the all-important fact had been communicated to them by their common father3 and so from father to child the knowledge was communicated as extensively1 as the knowledge of his existence was known2 for it was by this means1 in the first instance1 that men had a knowledge of his existence4 ,,ii4 #ce1cf4 ,q4 ,how do you know that the knowledge of the existence of ,god was communicated in this manner1 throughout the different ages of the world8 ,a4 ,by the chronology obtained through the revelations of ,god4 ,q4 ,how would you divide that chronology in order to convey it to the understanding clearly8 ,a4 ,into two parts3 ,first1 by embracing that period of the world from ,adam to ,noah2 and secondly1 from ,noah to ,abraham3 from which period the knowledge of the existence of ,god has been so general1 that it is a matter of no dispute in what manner the idea of his existence has been retained in the world4 ,q4 ,how many noted righteous men lived from ,adam to ,noah8 ,a4 ,nine2 which includes ,abel1 who was slain by his brother4 ,q4 whole of the first and second lectures4 ,,lecture ,,third4 ,of ,faith4 ,section ,,iii4 #a4 ,in the second lecture it was shown1 how it was that the knowledge of the existence of ,god1 came into the world1 and by what means the first thoughts were suggested to the minds of men1 that such a ,being did actually exist3 and that it was by reason of the knowledge of his existence that there was a foundation laid for the exercise of faith in him1 as the only ,being in whom faith could center for life and salvation4 ,for faith could not center in a ,being of whose existence we have no idea2 because the idea of his existence in the first instance1 is essential to the exercise of faith in him4 ,rom4 #aj3ad ,how then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed8 and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard8 and how shall they hear without a preacher8 7or one sent to tell them87 ,so then faith comes by hearing the word of ,god4 ,new ,translation4 #b4 ,let us here observe1 that three things are necessary1 in order that any rational and intelligent being may exercise faith in ,god unto life and salvation4 #c4 ,first1 the idea that he actually exists4 #d4 ,secondly1 ,a correct idea of his character1 perfections1 and attributes4 #e4 ,thirdly1 ,an actual knowledge that the course of life which he is pursuing1 is according to his will4--,for without an acquaintance with these three important facts1 the faith of every rational being must be imperfect and unproductive2 but with this understanding it can become perfect and fruitful1 abounding in righteousness1 unto the praise and glory of ,god the ,father1 and the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 #f4 ,having previously been made acquainted with the way the idea of his existence came into the world1 as well as the fact of his existence1 we shall proceed to examine his character1 perfections and attributes1 in order that this class may see1 not only the just grounds which they have for the exercise of faith in him1 for life and salvation1 but the reasons that all the world1 also1 as far as the idea of his existence extends1 may have to exercise faith in him the ,father of all living4 #g4 ,as we have been indebted to a revelation which ,god made of himself to his creatures in the first instance1 for the idea of his existence1 so in like manner we are indebted to the revelations which he has given to us1 for a correct understanding of his character1 perfections1 and attributes2 because1 without the revelations which he has given to us1 no man by searching could find out ,god4 ,job #aa3g1h1i4 ,first ,cor4 #b3i1aj1aa3 ,but as it is written1 eye has not seen1 nor ear heard1 neither have entered into the heart of man1 the things which ,god hath prepared for them that love him2 but ,god hath revealed them unto us by his ,spirit1 for the ,spirit searches all things1 yea1 the deep things of ,god4 ,for what man knows the things of a man1 save the spirit of man which is in him8 ,even so1 the things of ,god knows no man but by the ,spirit of ,god4 #h4 ,having said so much1 we proceed to examine the character which the revelations have given of ,god4 #i4 ,moses gives us the following account in ,exodus1 #cd3f ,and the ,lord passed by before him1 and proclaimed1 ',the ,lord ,god1 the ,lord ,god1 merciful and gracious1 long suffering and abundant in goodness and truth4 ,psalm #ajc3f1g1h ,the ,lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed4 ,he made known his ways unto ,moses1 his acts unto the children of ,israel4 ,the ,lord is merciful and gracious1 slow to anger and plenteous in mercy3 ,psalm #ajc3ag1ah3 ,but the mercy of the ,lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him1 and his righteousness unto children's children1 to such as keep his covenant1 and to those that remember his commandments to do them4 ,psalm #ij3b3 ,before the mountains were brought forth1 or ever you had formed the earth and the world1 even from everlasting to everlasting1 you are ,god4 ,heb4 #a3aj1aa1ab ,and you1 ,lord1 in the beginning1 have laid the foundation of the earth2 and the heavens are the works of your hands3 they shall perish1 but you remain2 and they shall wax old as a garment2 and as a vesture shall you fold them up1 and they shall be changed2 but you are the same and your years shall not fail ,james #a3ag3 ,every he turn to the right hand or the left1 or vary from that which he has said1 therefore his paths are strait1 and his course is one eternal round3 ,book of ,commandments1 chapt4 #cg3a4 ,listen to the voice of the ,lord your ,god1 even ,alpha and ,omega1 the beginning and the end1 whose course is one eternal round1 the same yesterday to-day and forever4 #aa4 ,numbers1 #bc3ai4 ,god is not a man1 that he should lie1 neither the son of man that he should repent4 ,first ,john1 #d3h4 ,he that loves not1 knows not ,god2 for ,god is love4 ,acts #aj3cd3 ,then ,peter opened his mouth and said ,of a truth ,i perceive that ,god is no respecter of persons1 but in every nation he that fears ,god and works righteousness is accepted with him4 #ab4 ,from the foregoing testimonies1 we learn the following things respecting the character of ,god4 #ac4 ,first1 ,that he was ,god before the world was created1 and the same ,god that he was1 after it was created4 #ad4 ,secondly1 ,that he is merciful1 and gracious1 slow to anger1 abundant in goodness1 and that he was so from everlasting1 and will be to everlasting4 #ae4 ,thirdly1 ,that he changes not1 neither is there variableness with him2 but that he is the same from everlasting to everlasting1 being the same yesterday to-day and forever2 and that his course is one eternal round1 without variation4 #af4 ,fourthly1 ,that he is a ,god of truth and cannot lie4 #ag4 ,fifthly1 ,that he is no respecter of persons2 but in every nation he that fears ,god and works righteousness is accepted of him4 #ah4 ,sixthly1 ,that he is love4 #ai4 ,an acquaintance with these attributes in the divine character1 is essentially necessary1 in order that the faith of any rational being can center in him for life and salvation4 ,for if he did not1 in the first instance1 believe him to be ,god1 that is1 the ,creator and upholder of all things1 he could not center his faith in him for life and salvation1 for fear there should be greater than he1 who would thwart all his plans1 and he1 like the gods of the heathen1 would be unable to fulfill his promises2 but seeing he is ,god over all1 from everlasting to everlasting1 the ,creator and upholder of all things1 no such fear can exist in the minds of those who put their trust in him1 so that in this respect their faith can be without wavering4 #bj4 ,but secondly3 unless he was merciful and gracious1 slow to anger1 long-suffering and full of goodness1 such is the weakness of human nature1 and so great the frailties and imperfections of men1 that unless they believed that these excellencies existed in the divine character1 the faith necessary to salvation could not exist2 for doubt would take the place of faith1 and those who know their weakness and liability to sin would be in constant doubt of salvation if it were not for the idea which they have of the excellency of the character of ,god1 that he is slow to anger and long-suffering1 and of a forgiving disposition1 and does forgive iniquity1 transgression1 and sin4 ,an idea of these facts does away doubt1 and makes faith exceedingly strong4 #ba4 ,but it is equally as necessary that men should have the idea that he is a ,god who changes not1 in order to have faith in him1 as it is to have the idea that he is gracious and long-suffering4 ,for without the idea of unchangeableness in the character of the ,deity1 doubt would take the place of faith4 ,but with the idea that he changes not1 faith lays hold upon the excellencies in his character with unshaken confidence1 believing he is the same yesterday1 to-day and forever1 and that his course is one eternal round4 #bb4 ,and again1 the idea that he is a ,god of truth and cannot lie1 is equally as necessary to the exercise of faith in him1 as the idea of his unchangeableness4 ,for without the idea that he was a ,god of truth and could not lie1 the confidence necessary to be placed in his word in order to the exercise of faith in him1 could not exist4 ,but having the idea that he is not man that he can lie1 it gives power to the minds of men to exercise faith in him4 #bc4 ,but it is also necessary that men should have an idea that he is no respecter of persons2 for with the idea of all the other excellencies in his character1 and this one wanting1 men could not exercise faith in him1 because if he were a respecter of persons1 they could not tell what their privileges were1 nor how far they were authorized to exercise faith in him or whether they were authorized to do it at all1 but all must be confusion2 but no sooner are the minds of men made acquainted with the truth on this point1 that he is no respecter of persons1 than they see that they have authority by faith to lay hold on eternal life the richest boon of heaven1 because ,god is no respecter of persons1 and that every man in every nation has an equal privilege4 #bd4 ,and lastly1 but not less important to the exercise of faith in ,god1 is the idea that he is love2 for with all the other excellencies in his character1 without this one to influence them1 they could not have such powerful dominion over the minds of men2 but when the idea is planted in the mind that he is love1 who cannot see the just ground that men of every nation1 kindred1 and tongue1 have to exercise faith in ,god so as to obtain eternal life8 #be4 ,from the above description of the character of the ,deity which is given him in the revelations to men1 there is a sure foundation for the exercise of faith in him among every people1 nation and kindred1 from age to age1 and from generation to generation4 #bf4 ,let us here observe that the foregoing is the character which is given of ,god in his revelations to the ,former ,day ,saints1 and it is also the character which is given of him in his revelations to the ,latter ,day ,saints1 so that the saints of former days1 and those of latter days1 are both alike in this respect2 the ,latter ,day ,saints having as good grounds to exercise faith in ,god1 as the former day saints had2 because the same character is given of him to both4 ,q4 ,what was shown in the second lecture8 ,a4 ,it was shown how the knowledge of the existence of ,god came into the world-- ,,iii4 #a4 ,q4 ,what is the effect of the idea of his existence among men8 ,a4 ,it lays the foundation for the exercise of faith in him4-- ,,iii4 #a4 ,q4 ,is the idea of his existence1 in the first instance1 necessary in order for the exercise of faith in him8 ,a4 ,it is4 ,,iii4 #a4 ,q4 ,how do you prove it8 ,a4 ,by the tenth chapter of ,romans and fourteenth verse4 to his mind and will4 ,,iii4 #c1d1e4 ,q4 ,would the idea of any one or two of the above-mentioned things enable a person to exercise faith in ,god8 ,a4 ,it would not1 for without the idea of them all1 faith would be imperfect and unproductive4 ,,iii4 #e4 ,q4 ,would an idea of these three things lay a sure foundation for the exercise of faith in ,god1 so as to obtain life and salvation8 ,a4 ,it would2 for by the idea of these three things1 faith could become perfect1 and fruitful1 abounding in righteousness unto the praise and glory of ,god4 ,,iii4 #e4 ,q4 ,how are we to be made acquainted with the before mentioned things respecting the ,deity1 and respecting ourselves8 ,a4 ,by revelation4 ,,iii4 #f4 ,q4 ,could these things be found out by any other means than by revelation8 ,a4 ,they could not4 ,q4 ,how do you prove it8 ,a4 ,by the scriptures4 ,job #aa3g1h3i4 #a ,corinthians #b3i1aj1aa4 ,,iii4 #g4 ,q4 ,what things do we learn in the revelations of ,god respecting his character8 ,a4 ,we learn the six following things3 first1 that he was ,god before the world was created1 and the same ,god that he was after it was created4 ,secondly1 that he is merciful and gracious1 slow to anger1 abundant in goodness1 and that he was so from everlasting1 and will be so to everlasting4 ,thirdly1 that he changes not1 neither is there variableness with him1 and that his course is one eternal round4 ,fourthly1 that he is a ,god of truth and cannot lie4 ,fifthly1 that he is no respecter of persons2 and sixthly1 that he is love4 ,,iii4 #ab1ac1ad1ae1af1ag1ah4 ,q4 ,where do you find the revelations which give us this idea of the character of the ,deity8 ,a4 ,in the bible and book of commandments1 and they are quoted in the third lecture4 ,,iii4 #i1aj1aa4 ,q4 ,what effect would it have on any rational being not to have an idea that the ,lord was ,god1 the ,creator and upholder of all things8 ,a4 ,it would prevent him from exercising faith in him unto life and salvation4 ,q4 ,why would it prevent him from exercising faith in ,god8 ,a4 ,because he would be as the heathen not knowing but there might be a being greater and more powerful than he1 and thereby he be prevented from fulfilling his promises4 ,,iii4 #ai4 ,q4 ,does this idea prevent this doubt8 ,a4 ,it does2 for persons having this idea are enabled thereby to exercise faith without this doubt4 ,,iii4 #ai4 ,q4 ,is it not also necessary to have the idea that ,god is merciful1 and gracious1 long-suffering and full of goodness8 ,a4 ,it is4 ,,iii4 #bj4 ,q4 ,why is it necessary8 ,a4 ,because of the weakness and imperfections of human nature1 and the great frailties of man2 for such is the weakness of man1 and such his frailties1 that he is liable to sin continually1 and if ,god were not long-suffering1 and full of compassion1 gracious and merciful and of a forgiving disposition1 man would be cut off from before him in consequence of which1 he would be in continual doubt and could not exercise faith2 for where doubt is1 there faith has no power1 but by man's believing that ,god is full of compassion and forgiveness1 long-suffering and slow to anger1 he can exercise faith in him and overcome doubt1 so as to be exceedingly strong4 ,,iii4 #bj4 ,q4 ,is it not equally as necessary that man should have an idea that ,god changes not1 neither is there variableness with him1 in order to exercise faith in him unto life and salvation8 ,a4 ,it is2 because without this1 he would not know how soon the mercy of ,god might change into cruelty1 his long-suffering into rashness1 his love into hatred1 and in consequence of which doubt man would be incapable of exercising faith in him1 but having the idea that he is unchangeable1 man can have faith in him continually1 believing that1 what he was yesterday he is to-day1 and will be forever4 ,,iii4 #ba4 ,q4 ,is it not necessary also1 for men to have an idea that ,god is a being of truth before they can have perfect faith in him8 ,a4 ,it is2 for unless men have this idea they cannot place confidence in his word1 and not being able to place confidence in his word1 they could not have faith in him2 but believing that he is a ,god of truth1 and that his word cannot fail1 their faith can rest in him without doubt4 ,,iii4 #bb4 ,q4 ,could man exercise faith in ,god so as to obtain eternal life unless he believed that ,god was no respecter of persons8 ,a4 ,he could not2 because without this idea he could not certainly know that it was his privilege so to do1 and in consequence of this doubt his faith could not be sufficiently strong to save him4 ,,iii4 #bc4 ,q4 ,would it be possible for a man to exercise faith in ,god1 so as to be saved1 unless he had an idea that ,god was love8 ,a4 ,he could not2 because man could not love ,god unless he had an idea that ,god was love1 and if he did not love ,god he could not have faith in him4 ,,iii4 #bd4 ,q4 ,what is the description which the sacred writers give of the character of the ,deity calculated to do8 ,a4 ,it is calculated to lay a foundation for the exercise of faith in him1 as far as the knowledge extends among all people1 tongues1 languages1 kindreds and nations and that from age to age1 and from generation to generation4 ,,iii4 #be4 ,q4 ,is the character which ,god has given of himself uniform8 ,a4 ,it is1 in all his revelations1 whether to the ,former ,day ,saints1 or to the ,latter day saints1 so that they all have the authority to exercise faith in him1 and to expect by the exercise of their faith1 to enjoy the same blessings4 ,,iii4 #bf4 ,,lecture ,,fourth4 ,of ,faith4 ,,section ,,iv4 #a4 ,having shown in the third lecture1 that correct ideas of the character of ,god are necessary in order to the exercise of faith in him unto life and salvation1 and that without correct ideas of his character1 the minds of men could not have sufficient power with ,god to the exercise of faith necessary to the enjoyment of eternal life1 and that correct ideas of his character lay a foundation as far as his character is concerned1 for the exercise of faith1 so as to enjoy the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of ,jesus ,christ1 even that of eternal glory2 we shall now proceed to show the connection there is between correct ideas of the attributes of ,god1 and the exercise of faith in him unto eternal life4 #b4 ,let us here observe1 that the real design which the ,god of heaven had in view in making the human family acquainted with his attributes1 was1 that they through the ideas of the existence of his attributes1 might be enabled to exercise faith in him1 and through the exercise of faith in him1 might obtain eternal life4 ,for without the idea of the existence of the attributes which belong to ,god1 the minds of men could not have power to exercise faith in him so as to lay hold upon eternal life4 ,the ,god of heaven understanding most perfectly the constitution of human nature1 and the weakness of men1 knew what was necessary to be revealed1 and what ideas must be planted in their minds in order that they might be enabled to exercise faith in him unto eternal life4 #c4 ,having said so much we shall proceed to examine the attributes of ,god1 as set forth in his revelations to the human family1 and to show how necessary correct ideas of his attributes are1 to enable men to exercise faith in him4 ,for without these ideas being planted in the minds of men it would be out of the power of any person or persons to exercise faith in ,god so as to obtain eternal life4 ,so that the divine communications made to men in the first instance1 were designed to establish in their minds the ideas necessary to enable them to exercise faith in ,god1 and through this means to be partakers of his glory4 #d4 ,we have1 in the revelations which he has given to the human family1 the following account of his attributes4 #e4 ,first1 ,knowledge4 ,acts #ae3ah4 ,known unto ,god are all his works from the beginning of the world4 ,isaiah #df3i1aj4 ,remember the former things of old2 for ,i am ,god and there is none else2 ,i am ,god1 and there is none like me1 declaring the end from the beginning1 and from ancient time the things that are not yet done1 saying4 ,my counsel shall stand1 and ,i will do all my pleasure4 #f4 ,secondly1 ,faith1 or power4 ,heb4 #aa3c4 ,through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of ,god4 ,gen4 #a3a4 ,in the beginning ,god created the heaven and the earth4 ,isaiah #ad3bd1bg4 ,the ,lord of hosts hath sworn1 saying1 ,surely as ,i have thought so shall it come to pass2 and as ,i have purposed so shall it stand4 ,for the ,lord of ,hosts hath purposed1 and who shall disannul it8 and his hand is stretched out1 and who shall turn it back8 #g4 ,thirdly1 ,justice4 ,psalm #hi3ad4 ,justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne4 ,isaiah #de3ba4 ,tell ye1 and bring them near2 yea1 let them take counsel together3 who hath declared this from the ancient time8 ,have #cb3d4 ,he is the ,rock1 his work is perfect2 for all his ways are judgment3 a ,god of truth1 and without iniquity3 just and right is he4 ,ps4 #i3g4 ,but the ,lord shall endure for ever3 he has prepared his throne for judgment4 ,ps4 #i3af4 ,the ,lord is known by the judgment which he executeth4 #i4 ,fifthly1 ,mercy4 ,ps4 #hi3ae4 ,mercy and truth shall go before his face4 ,exodus #cd3f4 ,and the ,lord passed by before him1 and proclaimed1 ,the ,lord1 the ,lord ,god1 merciful and gracious4 ,neh4 #i3ag4--;,but you art a ,god ready to pardon1 gracious and merciful4 #aj4 ,and ,sixthly1 ,truth4 ,ps4 #hi3ad4 ,mercy and truth shall go before thy face4 ,exodus #cd3f4 ,long-suffering and abundant in goodness and truth4 ,deut4 #cb3d4 ,he is the ,rock1 his work is perfect2 for all his ways are judgment4 ,a ,god of truth and without iniquity1 just and right is he4 ,ps #ca3e4 ,into thy hand ,i commit my spirit3 thou hast redeemed me1 ,o ,lord ,god of truth4 #aa4 ,by a little reflection it will be seen1 that the idea of the existence of these attributes in the ,deity1 is necessary to enable any rational being to exercise faith in him4 ,for without the idea of the existence of these attributes in the ,deity1 men could not exercise faith in him for life and salvation2 seeing that without the knowledge of all things ,god would not be able to save any portion of his creatures2 for it is by reason of the knowledge which he has of all things1 from the beginning to the end1 that enables him to give that understanding to his creatures by which they are made partakers of eternal life2 and if it were not for the idea existing in the minds of men that ,god had all knowledge1 it would be impossible for them to exercise faith in him4 #ab4 ,and it is not less necessary that men should have the idea of the existence of the attribute power in the ,deity4 ,for1 unless ,god had power over all things1 and was able1 by his power1 to control all things1 and thereby deliver his creatures who put their trust in him1 from the power of all beings that might seek their destruction1 whether in heaven1 on earth1 or in hell1 men could not be saved2 but with the idea of the existence of this attribute planted in the mind1 men feel as though they had nothing to fear who put their trust in ,god1 believing that he has power to save all who come to him1 to the very uttermost4 #ac4 ,it is also necessary1 in order to the exercise of faith in ,god1 unto life and salvation1 that men should have the idea of the existence of the attribute justice1 in him4 ,for without the idea of the existence of the attribute ,justice1 in the ,deity1 men could not have confidence sufficient to place themselves under his guidance and direction2 for they would be filled with fear and doubt1 lest the ,judge of all the earth would not do right1 and thus fear1 or doubt1 existing in the mind1 would preclude the possibility of the exercise of faith in him for life and salvation4 ,but1 when the idea of the existence of the attribute justice1 in the ,deity1 is fairly planted in the mind1 it leaves no room for doubt to get into the heart1 and the mind is enabled to cast itself upon the ,almighty without fear and without doubt1 and with the most unshaken confidence1 believing that the ,judge of all the earth will do right4 #ad4 ,it is also of equal importance that men should have the idea of the existence of the attribute judgment1 in ,god1 in order that they may exercise faith in him for life and salvation2 for without the idea of the existence of this attribute in the ,deity1 it would be impossible for men to exercise faith in him for life and salvation1 seeing that it is through the exercise of this attribute that the faithful in ,christ ,jesus are delivered out of the hands of those who seek their destruction2 for if ,god were not to come out in swift judgment against the workers of iniquity and the powers of darkness1 his saints could not be saved2 for it is by judgment that the ,lord delivers his saints out of the hands of all their enemies1 and those who reject the gospel of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,but no sooner is the idea of the existence of this attribute1 planted in the minds of men1 than it gives power to the mind for the exercise of faith and confidence in ,god1 and they are enabled1 by faith1 to lay hold on the promises which are set before them1 and wade through all the tribulations and afflictions to which they are subjected by reason of the persecution from those who know not ,god1 and obey not the gospel of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 believing1 that in due time the ,lord will come out in swift judgement against their enemies1 and they shall be cut off from before him1 and that1 in his own due time he will bear them off conquerors and more than conquerors in all things4 #ae4 ,and again1 it is equally important that men should have the idea of the existence of the attribute mercy1 in the ,deity1 in order to exercise faith in him for life and salvation4 ,for without the idea of the existence of this attribute in the ,deity1 the spirits of the saints would taint in the midst of the tribulations afflictions1 and persecutions which they have to endure for righteousness' sake2 but when the idea of the existence of this attribute is once established in the mind it gives life and energy to the spirits of the saints3 believing that the mercy of ,god will be poured out upon them in the midst of their afflictions1 and that he will compassionate them in their sufferings1 and that the mercy of ,god will lay hold of them and secure them in the arms of his love1 so that they will receive a full reward for all their sufferings4 #af4 ,and lastly1 but not less important to the exercise of faith in ,god1 is the idea of the existence of the attribute truth1 in him4 ,for without the idea of the existence of this attribute the mind of man could have nothing upon which it could rest with certainty3 all would be confusion and doubt2 but with the idea of the existence of this attribute in the ,deity1 in the mind1 all the teachings1 instructions1 promises1 and blessings1 become realities1 and the mind is enabled to lay hold of them with certainty and confidence3 believing that these things1 and all that the ,lord has said1 shall be fulfilled in their time2 and that all the cursings1 denunciations1 and judgments1 pronounced upon the heads of the unrighteous will also be executed in the due time of the ,lord3 and1 by reason of the truth and veracity of him1 the mind beholds its deliverance and salvation as being certain4 #ag4 ,let the mind once reflect sincerely and candidly upon the ideas of the existence of the before-mentioned attributes in the ,deity1 and it will be seen1 that as far as his attributes are concerned1 there is a sure foundation laid for the exercise of faith in him for life and salvation4 ,for inasmuch as ,god possesses the attribute knowledge he can make all things known to his saints necessary for their salvation2 and as he possesses the attribute power he is able thereby to deliver them from the power of all enemies2 and seeing also1 that justice is an attribute of the ,deity1 he will deal with them upon the principles of righteousness and equity1 and a just reward will be granted unto them for all their afflictions and sufferings for the truth's sake4 ,and as judgment is an attribute of the ,deity also1 his saints can have the most unshaken confidence that they will1 in due time1 obtain a perfect deliverance out of the hands of all their enemies1 and a complete victory over all those who have sought their hurt and destruction4 ,and as mercy is also an attribute of the ,deity1 his saints can have confidence that it will be exercised towards them2 and through the exercise of that attribute towards them comfort and consolation will be administered unto them abundantly1 amid all their afflictions and tribulations4 ,and lastly1 realizing that truth is an attribute of the ,deity1 the mind is led to rejoice amid all its trials and temptations1 in hope of that glory which is to be brought at the revelation of ,jesus ,christ1 and in view of that crown which is to be placed upon the heads of the saints in the day when the ,lord shall distribute rewards unto them1 and in prospect of that eternal weight of glory which the ,lord has promised to bestow upon them when he shall bring them into the midst of his throne to dwell in his presence eternally4 #ah4 ,in view1 then1 of the existence of these attributes1 the faith of the saints can become exceedingly strong1 abounding in righteousness unto the praise and glory of ,god1 and can exert its mighty influence in searching after wisdom and understanding1 until it has obtained a knowledge of all things that pertain to life and salvation4 #ai4 ,such1 then1 is the foundation1 which is laid1 through the revelation of the attributes of ,god1 for the exercise of faith in him for life and salvation2 and seeing that these are attributes of the ,deity1 they are unchangeable--being the same yesterday1 to day1 and forever--which gives to the minds of the ,latter ,day ,saints the same power and authority to exercise faith in ,god1 which the ,former ,day ,saints had2 so that all the saints1 in this respect have been1 are1 and will be alike until the end of time2 for ,god never changes1 therefore his attributes and character remain forever the same4 ,and as it is through the revelation of these that a foundation is laid for the exercise of faith in ,god unto life and salvation1 the foundation1 therefore1 for the exercise of faith was1 is1 and ever will be the same4 ,so that all men have had1 and will have an equal privilege4 ,question4 ,what was shown in the third lecture8 ,answer4 ,it was shown that correct ideas of the character of ,god are necessary in order to exercise faith in him unto life and salvation2 and that without correct ideas of his glory1 and power3 possessing all perfection and fullness3 the ,son1 who was in the bosom of the ,father1 a personage of tabernacle1 made1 or fashioned like unto man1 or being in the form and likeness of man1 or1 rather1 man was formed after his likeness1 and in his image2--he is also the express image and likeness of the personage of the ,father3 possessing all the fullness of the ,father1 or the can be4 ,but notwithstanding all this1 he kept the law of ,god1 and remained without sin3 ,showing thereby that it is in the power of man to keep the law and remain also without sin4 ,and also1 that by him a righteous judgment might come upon all flesh1 and that all who walk not in the law of ,god1 may justly be condemned by the law1 and have no excuse for their sins4 ,and he being the ,only the foregoing account of the ,godhead lay a sure foundation for the exercise of faith in him unto life and salvation8 ,a4 ,it does4 ,q4 ,how do you prove it8 ,a4 ,by the third paragraph of this lecture4 ,let the student commit this also4 ,,lecture ,,sixth4 ,of ,faith4 ,,section ,,vi4 #a4 ,having treated1 in the preceding lectures1 of the ideas1 of the character1 perfections and attributes of ,god1 we next proceed to treat of the knowledge which persons must have1 that the course of life which they pursue is according to the will of ,god1 in order that they may be enabled to exercise faith in him unto life and salvation4 #b4 ,this knowledge supplies an important place in revealed religion2 for it was by reason of it that the ancients were enabled to endure as seeing him who is invisible4 ,an actual knowledge to any person that the course of life which he pursues is according to the will of ,god1 is essentially necessary to enable him to have that confidence in ,god1 without which no person can obtain eternal life4 ,it was this that enabled the ancient saints to endure all their afflictions and persecutions1 and to take joyfully the soiling of their goods1 knowing 7not believing merely17 that they had a more enduring substance4 ,heb4 #aj3cd4 #c4 ,having the assurance that they were pursuing a course which was agreeable to the will of ,god1 they were enabled to take1 not only the spoiling of their goods1 and the wasting of their substance1 joyfully1 but also to suffer death in its most horrid forms2 knowing1 7not merely believing17 that when this earthly house of their tabernacle was dissolved1 they had a building of ,god1 a house not made with hands1 eternal in the heavens4 ,second ,cor4 #e3a4 #d4 ,such was and always will be the situation of the saints of ,god1 that unless they have an actual knowledge that the course they are pursuing is according to the will of ,god1 they will grow weary in their minds and faint2 for such has been1 and a ways will be1 the opposition in the hearts of unbelievers and those that know not ,god against the pure and unadulterated religion of heaven1 7the only thing which ensures eternal life17 that they will persecute1 to the uttermost1 all that worship ,god according to his revelations1 receive the truth in the love of it1 and submit themselves to be guided and directed by his will1 and drive them to such extremities that nothing short of an actual knowledge of their being the favorites of heaven1 and of their having embraced that order of things which ,god has established for the redemption of man1 will enable them to exercise that confidence in him1 necessary for them to overcome the world1 and obtain that crown of glory which is laid up for them that fear ,god4 #e4 ,for a man to lay down his all1 his character and reputation1 his honor and applause1 his good name among men1 his houses1 his lands1 his brothers and sisters1 his wife and children1 and even his own life also1 counting all things but filth and dross for the excellency of the knowledge of ,jesus ,christ1 requires more than mere belief1 or supposition that he is doing the will of ,god1 but actual knowledge3 realizing1 that when these sufferings are ended he will enter into eternal rest2 and be a partaker of the glory of ,god4 #f4 ,for unless a person does know that he is walking according to the will of ,god1 it would be offering an insult to the dignity of the ,creator1 were he to say that he would be a partaker of his glory when he should be done with the things of this life4 ,but when he has this knowledge1 and most assuredly knows that he is doing the will of ,god1 his confidence can be equally strong that he will be a partaker of the glory of ,god4 #g4 ,let us here observe1 that a religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation2 for1 from the first existence of man1 the faith necessary unto the enjoyment of life and salvation never could be obtained without the sacrifice of all earthly things4 ,it was through this sacrifice1 and this only1 that ,god has ordained that men should enjoy eternal life2 and it is through the medium of the sacrifice of all earthly things that men do actually know that they are doing the things that are well pleasing in the sight of ,god4 ,when a man has offered in sacrifice all that he has1 for the truth's sake1 not even withholding his life1 and believing before ,god that he has been called to make this sacrifice1 because he seeks to do his will1 he does know1 most assuredly1 that ,god does and will accept his sacrifice offering1 that he has not nor will not seek his face in vain4 ,under these circumstances1 then1 he can obtain the faith necessary for him to lay hold on eternal life4 #h4 ,it is in vain for persons to fancy to themselves that they are heirs with those1 or can be heirs with them1 who have offered their all in sacrifice1 and by this means obtained faith in ,god and favor with him so as to obtain eternal life1 unless they in like manner offer unto him the same sacrifice1 and through that offering obtain the knowledge that they are accepted of him4 #i4 ,it was in offering sacrifices that ,abel1 the first martyr1 obtained knowledge that he was accepted of ,god4 ,and from the days of righteous ,abel to the present time1 the knowledge that men have that they are accepted in the sight of ,god1 is obtained by offering sacrifice3 and in the last days1 before the ,lord comes1 he is to gather together his saints who have made a covenant with him by sacrifice4 ,ps4 #ej3 #c1d1e4 ,our ,god shall come1 and shall not keep silence3 a fire shall devour before him1 and it shall be very tempestuous round about him4 ,he shall call to the heavens from above1 and to the earth1 that he may judge his people4 ,gather my saints together unto me2 those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice4 #aj4 ,those1 then1 who make the sacrifice will have the testimony that their course is pleasing in the sight of ,god1 and those who have this testimony will have faith to lay hold on eternal life1 and will be enabled1 through faith1 to endure unto the end1 and receive the crown that is laid up for them that love the appearing of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,but those who do not make the sacrifice cannot enjoy this faith1 because men are dependent upon this sacrifice in order to obtain this faith3 therefore1 they cannot lay hold upon eternal life1 because the revelations of ,god do not guarantee unto them the authority so to do1 and without this guarantee faith could not exist4 #aa4 ,all the saints of whom we have account1 in all the revelations of ,god which are extant1 obtained the knowledge which they had of their acceptance in his sight1 through the sacrifice which they offered unto him3 and through the knowledge thus obtained their faith became sufficiently strong to lay hold upon the promise of eternal life1 and to endure as seeing him who is invisible2 and were enabled1 through faith1 to combat the powers of darkness1 contend against the wiles of the adversary1 overcome the world1 and obtain the end of their faith1 even the salvation of their souls4 #ab4 ,but those who have not made this sacrifice to ,god1 do not know that the course which they pursue is well pleasing in his sight2 for whatever may be their belief or their opinion1 it is a matter of doubt and uncertainty in their mind2 and where doubt and uncertainty are1 there faith is not1 nor can it be4 ,for doubt and faith do not exist in the same person at the same time4 ,so that persons whose minds are under doubts and fears cannot have unshaken confidence1 and where unshaken confidence is not1 there faith is weak1 and where faith is weak the persons will not be able to contend against all the opposition1 tribulations1 and afflictions which they will have to encounter in order to be heirs of ,god1 and joint heirs with ,christ ,jesus2 and they will grow weary in their minds1 and the adversary will have power over them and destroy them4 ,note4 ,this ,lecture is so plain1 and the facts set forth so self-evident1 that it is deemed unnecessary to form a catechism upon it3 the student is therefore instructed to commit the whole to memory4 ,,lecture ,,seventh4 ,of ,faith4 ,,section ,,vii4 #a4 ,in the preceding lectures1 we treated of what faith was1 and of the object on which it rested4 ,agreeably to our plan1 we now proceed to speak of its effects3 #b4 ,as we have seen in our former lectures1 that faith was the principle of action and of power in all intelligent beings1 both in heaven and on earth1 it will not be expected that we shall1 in a lecture of this description1 attempt to unfold all its effects2 neither is it necessary to our purpose so to do2 for it would embrace all things in heaven and on earth1 and encompass all the creations of ,god1 with all their endless varieties3 for no world has yet been framed that was not framed by faith2 neither has there been an intelligent being on any of ,god's creations who did not get there by reason of faith1 as it existed in himself or in some other being2 nor has there been a change or a revolution in any of the creatures of ,god1 but it has been effected by faith3 neither will there be a change or a revolution unless it is effected in the same way1 in any of the vast creations of the ,almighty2 for it is by faith that the ,deity works4 #c4 ,let us here offer some explanation in relation to faith1 that our meaning may be clearly comprehended3 ,we ask1 then1 what are we to understand by a man's working by faith8 ,we answer3 ,we understand that when a man works by faith he works by mental exertion instead of physical force3 it is by words instead of exerting his physical powers1 with which every being works when he works by faith--,god said1 ,let there be light1 and there was light--,joshua spake and the great lights which ,god had created stood still--,elijah commanded1 and the heavens were stayed for the space of three years and six months1 so that it did not rain3 he again commanded and the heavens gave forth rain--all this was done by faith2 and the ,saviour says1 ,if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed1 say to this mountain1 remove1 and it will remove2 or say to that sycamine tree1 ,be ye plucked up and planted in the midst of the sea1 and it shall obey you4 ,faith1 then1 works by words2 and with these its mightiest works have been1 and will be1 performed4 #d4 ,it surely will not be required of us to prove1 that this is the principle upon which all eternity has acted and will act2 for every reflecting mind must know1 that it is by reason of this power that all the hosts of heaven perform their works of wonder1 majesty1 and glory3 ,angels move from place to place by virtue of this power--it is by reason of it that they are enabled to descend from heaven to earth2 and were it not for the power of faith they never could be ministering spirits to them who should be heirs of salvation1 neither could they act as heavenly messengers2 for they would be destitute of the power necessary to enable them to do the will of ,god4 #e4 ,it is only necessary for us to say1 that the whole visible creation1 as it now exists1 is the effect of faith--,it was faith by which it was framed1 and it is by the power of faith that it continues in its organized form1 and by which the planets move round their orbits and sparkle forth their glory3 ,so1 then1 faith is truly the first principle in the science of ,,theology1 and when understood1 leads the mind back to the beginning1 and carries it forward to the end2 or in other words1 from eternity to eternity4 #f4 ,as faith1 then1 is the principle by which the heavenly hosts perform their works1 and by which they enjoy all their felicity1 we might expect to find it set forth in a revelation from ,god as the principle upon which his creatures1 here below1 must act1 in order to obtain the felicities enjoyed by the saints in the eternal world1 and that when ,god would undertake to raise up men for the enjoyment of himself1 he would teach them the necessity of living by faith1 and the impossibility there was of their enjoying the blessedness of eternity without it1 seeing that all the blessings of eternity are the effects of faith4 #g4 ,therefore1 it is said1 and appropriately too1 that without faith it is impossible to please ,god4 ,if it should be asked1 ,why is it impossible to please ,god without faith8 ,the answer would be1 because1 without faith it is impossible for men to be saved2 and as ,god desires the salvation of men1 he must of course desire that they should have faith1 and he could not be pleased unless they had1 or else he could be pleased with their destruction4 #h4 ,from this we learn that the many exhortations which have been given by inspired men those who had received the word of the ,lord1 to have faith in him1 were not mere common-place matters1 but were for the best of all reasons1 and that was1 because1 without it there was no salvation1 neither in this world nor in that which is to come4 ,when men begin to live by faith they begin to draw near to ,god2 and when faith is perfected they are like him2 and because he is saved they are saved also2 for they will be in the same situation he is in1 because they have come to him2 and when he appears they shall be like him1 for they will see him as he is4 #i4 ,as all the visible creation is an effect of faith1 so is salvation1 also4 7,we mean salvation in its most extensive latitude of interpretation1 whether it is temporal or spiritual47 ,in order to have this subject clearly set before the mind1 let us ask what situation must a person be in1 in order to be saved8 or what is the difference between a saved man and one who is not saved8 ,we answer from what we have before seen of the heavenly worlds1 they must be persons who can work by faith1 and who are able1 by faith to be ministering spirits to them who shall be heirs of salvation4 ,and they must have faith to enable them to act in the presence of the ,lord1 otherwise they cannot be saved4 ,and what constitutes the real difference between a saved person and one not saved1 is the difference in the degree of their faith3 one's faith has become perfect enough to ,lay hold upon eternal life1 and the other's has not4 ,but to be a little more particular1 let us ask1 ,where shall we find a prototype into whose likeness we may be assimilated1 in order that we may be made partakers of life and salvation8 or in other words1 where shall we find a saved being8 for if we can find a saved being1 we may ascertain1 without much difficulty1 what all others must be1 in order to be saved--they must be like that individual to be saved3 we think1 that it will not be a matter of dispute1 that two beings1 who are unlike each other1 cannot both be saved2 for whatever constitutes the salvation of one1 will constitute the salvation of every creature which will be saved3 and if we find one saved being in all existence1 we may see what all others must be1 or else not be saved4 ,we ask1 then1 where is the prototype8 or where is the saved being8 ,we conclude1 as to the answer of this question1 there will be no dispute among those who believe the bible1 that it is ,christ3 all will agree in this1 that he is the prototype or standard of salvation2 or1 in other words1 that he is a saved being4 ,and if we should continue our interrogation1 and ask how it is that he is saved8 the answer would be1 because he is a just and holy being2 and if he were anything different from what he is he would not be saved2 for his salvation depends on his being precisely what he is and nothing else2 for if it were possible for him to change1 in the least degree1 so sure he would fail of salvation and lose all his dominion1 power1 authority and glory1 which constitutes salvation2 for salvation consists in the glory1 authority1 majesty1 power and dominion which ,jehovah possesses1 and in nothing else2 and no being can possess it but himself or one like him3 ,thus says ,john1 in his first epistle1 #c3b and #c3 ,behold1 now are we the sons of ,god1 and it doth not yet appear what we shall be2 but we know that1 when he shall appear we shall be like him2 for we shall see him as he is4 ,and any man that hath this hope in him purifies himself1 even as he is pure4--,why purify themselves as he is pure8 because1 if they do not they cannot be like him4 #aj4 ,the ,lord said unto ,moses1 ,leviticus1 #ai3b3 ,speak unto all the congregation of the children of ,israel1 and say unto them1 ,ye shall be holy3 for ,i the ,lord your ,god am holy4 ,and ,peter says1 first epistle1 #a3ae and #af3 ,but as he which hath called you is holy1 so be ye holy in all manner of conversation2 because it is written1 ,be ye holy2 for ,i am holy4 ,and the ,saviour says1 ,matthew1 #e3dh3 ,be ye therefore perfect1 even as your ,father which is in heaven is perfect4 ,if any should ask1 why all these sayings8 the answer is to be found from what is before noted from ,john's epistle1 that when he 7the ,lord7 shall appear1 the saints will be like him3 and if they are not holy1 as he is holy1 and perfect as he is perfect1 they cannot be like him2 for no being can enjoy his glory without possessing his perfections and holiness1 no more than they could reign in his kingdom without his power4 #aa4 ,this clearly sets forth the propriety of the ,saviour's saying1 recorded in ,john's testimony1 #ad3ab3 ,verily1 verily1 ,i say unto you1 he that believeth on me1 the works that ,i do shall he do also2 and greater works than these1 because ,i go unto my ,father4--,this taken in connection with some of the sayings in the ,saviour's prayer1 recorded in the #agth chapter1 gives great clearness to his expressions3 ,he says in the #bj1 #ba1 #bb1 #bc1 and #bd3 ,neither pray ,i for these alone1 but for them also who shall believe on me through their words2 that they all may be one2 as you1 ,father1 art in me1 and ,i in thee1 that they also may be one in us3 that the world may believe that thou hast sent me4 ,and the glory which thou gavest me1 ,i have given them2 that they may be one1 even as we are one2 ,i in them1 and thou in me1 that they may be made perfect in one2 and that the world may know that thou hast sent me1 and hast loved them1 as thou hast loved me4 ,father1 ,i will that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where ,i am3 that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me2 for thou lovedest me before the foundation of the world4 #ab4 ,all these sayings put together1 give as clear an account of the state of the glorified saints as language could give--the works that ,jesus had done they were to do1 and greater works than those which he had done among them should they do1 and that because he went to the ,father4 ,he does not say that they should do these works in time2 but they should do greater works because he went to the ,father4 ,he says1 in the #bdth verse3 ,father1 ,i will that they also1 whom thou hast given me1 be with me where ,i am2 that they may behold my glory4 ,these sayings1 taken in connection1 make it very plain1 that the greater works1 which those that believed on his name1 were to do1 were to be done in eternity1 where he was going1 and where they should behold his glory4 ,he had said1 in another part of his prayer1 that he desired of his ,father1 that those who believed on him should be one in him1 as he1 and the ,father were one in each other3 ,neither pray ,i for these 7the apostles7 alone1 but for them also who shall believe on me through their words2 that they all may be one3 that is1 they who believe on him through the apostles' words1 as well as the apostles themselves3 that they all may be one1 as thou1 ,father1 art in me and ,i in thee2 that they also may be one in us4 #ac4 ,what language can be plainer than this8 ,the ,saviour surely intended to be understood by his disciples3 and he so spake that they might understand him2 for he declares to his ,father1 in language not to be easily mistaken1 that he wanted his disciples1 even all of them1 to be as himself and the ,father3 for as he and the ,father were one so they might be one with them4 ,and what is said in the #bbnd verse is calculated to more firmly establish this belief1 if it needs any thing to establish it4 ,he says1 ,and the glory which thou gavest me1 ,i have given them1 that they may be one1 even as we are one4 ,as much as to say1 that unless they have the glory which the ,father had given him1 they could not be one with them3 ,for he says he had given them the glory that the ,father had given him1 that they might be one2 or1 in other words1 to make them one4 #ad4 ,this fills up the measure of information on this subject1 and shows most clearly1 that the ,saviour wished his disciples to understand that they were to be partakers with him in all things3 not even his glory excepted4 #ae4 ,it is scarcely necessary here to observe what we have previously noticed3 that the glory which the ,father and the ,son have1 is because they are just and holy beings2 and that if they were lacking in one attribute or perfection which they have1 the glory which they have1 never could be enjoyed by them2 for it requires them to be precisely what they are in order to enjoy it3 and if the ,saviour gives this glory to any others1 he must do it in the very way set forth in his prayer to his ,father3 by making them one with him1 as he and the ,father are one4--,in so doing he would give them the glory which the ,father has given him2 and when his disciples are made one with the ,father and ,son1 as the ,father and the ,son are one1 who cannot see the propriety of the ,saviour's saying1 ,the works which ,i do1 shall they do2 and greater works than these shall they do1 because ,i go to my ,father8 #af4 ,these teachings of the ,saviour most clearly show unto us the nature of salvation2 and what he proposed unto the human family when he proposed to save them--,that he proposed to make them like unto himself2 and he was like the ,father1 the great prototype of all saved beings2 and for any portion of the human family to be assimilated into their likeness is to be saved2 and to be unlike them is to be destroyed3 and on this hinge turns the door of salvation4 #ag4 ,who cannot see1 then1 that salvation is the effect of faith8 for1 as we have previously observed1 all the heavenly beings work by this principle2 and it is because they are able so to do that they are saved3 for nothing but this could save them4 ,and this is the lesson which the ,god of heaven1 by the mouth of all his holy prophets1 has been endeavouring to teach to the world4 ,hence we are told1 that without faith it is impossible to please ,god2 and that salvation is of faith1 that it might be by grace to the end1 the promise might be sure to all the seed4 ,romans #d3af--;,and that ,israel1 who followed after the law of righteousness1 has not attained to the law of righteousness4 ,wherefore8 because they sought it not by faith1 but as it were by the works of the law2 for they stumbled at that stumbling stone4 ,romans #i3cb4 ,and ,jesus said unto the man who brought his son to him1 to get the devil who tormented him1 cast out1 ,if you canst believe1 all things are possible to him that believeth4 ,mark1 #i3bc4 ,these with a multitude of other scriptures1 which might be quoted1 plainly set forth the light in which the ,saviour1 as well as the ,former ,day ,saints1 viewed the plan of salvation4--,that it was a system of faith--it begins with faith1 and continues by faith2 and every blessing which is obtained1 in relation to it1 is the effect of faith1 whether it pertains to this life or that which is to come4--,to this1 all the revelations of ,god bear witness4 ,if there were children of promise1 they were the effects of faith3 not even the ,saviour of the world excepted3 ,blessed is she that believed1 said ,elizabeth to ,mary1 when she went to visit her2--for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the ,lord2 ,luke1 #a3de3 ,nor was the birth of ,john the ,baptist the less a matter of faith2 for in order that his father ,zacharias might believe he was struck dumb4 ,and through the whole history of the scheme of life and salvation1 it is a matter of faith3 every man received according to his faith3 according as his faith was1 so were his blessings and privileges2 and nothing was withheld from him when his faith was sufficient to receive it4 ,he could stop the mouths of lions1 quench the violence of fire1 escape the edge of the sword1 wax valiant in fight1 and put to flight the armies of the aliens2 women could1 by their faith1 receive their dead children to life again2 in a word1 there was nothing impossible with them who had faith4 ,all things were in subjection to the ,former ,day ,saints1 according as their faith was--,by their faith they could obtain heavenly visions1 the ministering of angels1 have knowledge of the spirits of just men made perfect1 of the general assembly and church of the first born1 whose names are written in heaven1 of ,god the judge of all1 of ,jesus the ,mediator of the new covenant1 and become familiar with the third heavens1 see and hear things which were not only unutterable1 but were unlawful to utter4 ,peter1 in view of the power of faith1 #bnd epistle1 #a3a1b and #c1 says to the ,former ,day ,saints3 grace and peace be multiplied unto you1 through the knowledge of ,god1 and of ,jesus our ,lord1 according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness1 through the knowledge of him that hath called us unto glory and virtue4 ,in the first epistle1 #a3c1d and #e1 he says1 ,blessed be the ,god and ,father of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 who according to his abundant mercy1 hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of ,jesus ,christ from the dead1 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled1 and that fadeth not away1 reserved in heaven for you1 who are kept by the power of ,god through faith unto salvation1 ready to be revealed in the last time4 #ah4 ,these sayings put together1 show the apostle's views most clearly1 so as to admit of no mistake on the mind of any individual4 ,he says that all things that pertain to life and godliness were given unto them through the knowledge of ,god and our ,saviour ,jesus ,christ4 ,and if the question is asked1 how were they to obtain the knowledge of ,god8 7for there is a great difference between believing in ,god and knowing him3 knowledge implies more than faith4 ,and notice1 that all things that pertain to life and godliness were given through the knowledge of ,god27 the answer is given1 through faith they were to obtain this knowledge2 and1 having power by faith to obtain the knowledge of ,god1 they could with it obtain all other things which pertain to life and godliness4 #ai4 ,by these sayings of the ,apostle we learn1 that it was by obtaining a knowledge of ,god1 that men got the knowledge of all things which pertain to life and godliness1 and this knowledge was the effect of faith4 ,so that all things which pertain to life and godliness are the effects of faith4 #bj4 ,from this we may extend as far as any circumstances may require whether on earth or in heaven1 and we will find it the testimony of all inspired men1 or heavenly messengers1 that all things that pertain to life and godliness are the effects of faith and nothing else2 all learning1 wisdom and prudence fail1 and every thing else as a means of salvation but faith4 ,this is the reason that the fishermen of ,galilee could teach the world--because they sought by faith and by faith obtained4 ,and this is the reason that ,paul counted all things but filth and dross--what he formerly called his gain he called his loss2 yea1 and he counted all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of ,christ ,jesus the ,lord4 ,phil #c3g1h1i #aj4 ,because1 to obtain the faith by which he could enjoy the knowledge of ,christ ,jesus the ,lord1 he had to suffer the loss of all things3 this is the reason that the ,former ,day ,saints knew more1 and understood more of heaven1 and of heavenly things than all others beside1 because this information is the effect of faith--to be obtained by no other means4 ,and this is the reason1 that men1 as soon as they lose their faith1 run into strifes1 contentions1 darkness1 and difficulties2 for the knowledge which tends to life disappears with faith1 but returns when faith returns2 for when faith comes1 it brings its train of attendants with it--apostles1 prophets1 evangelists1 pastors1 teachers1 gifts1 wisdom1 knowledge1 miracles1 healings1 tongues1 interpretation of tongues1 c4 ,all these appear when faith appears on the earth1 and disappear when it disappears from the earth4 ,for these are the effects of faith1 and always have1 and always will1 attend it4 ,for where faith is1 there will the knowledge of ,god be also1 with all things which pertain thereto revelations1 visions1 and dreams1 as well as every other necessary thing1 in order that the possessors of faith may be perfected and obtain salvation2 for ,god must change1 otherwise faith will prevail with him4 ,and he who possesses it will1 through it1 obtain all necessary knowledge and wisdom1 until he shall know ,god1 and the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 whom he has sent3 whom to know is eternal life3 ,amen4 ,transcriber's ,note ,this version of the ,lectures on ,faith is meant to
