readers have already been informed of the death of ,rev4 ,k4 ,m4 ,kemp of the ,mendi ,mission1 and it now becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of his beloved wife4 ,the latest advices inform us that their deaths were neither of them due wholly to the climate4 ,mrs4 ,kemp was a brave1 true woman1 whose life and example will not soon be forgotten in the field where so many had already learned to love her4 99 99 99 99 99 ,by the time this reaches our readers1 ,superintendent ,ladd and ,dr4 ,snow will be well on their way toward the ,arthington ,mission4 ,it is their purpose to push directly for the region of the ,sobat in the heart of ,central ,africa1 with the view of locating the new mission4 ,it will give us pleasure to keep the public informed of the movements of their expedition in this interesting portion of ,africa4 ,two missionaries are under appointment to occupy this field at the call of the ,superintendent4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we take pleasure in announcing the safe arrival of ,rev4 ,o4 ,h4 ,white1 ,d4 ,d41 from ,england4 ,after a continuous service of over six years of earnest labor in the mother country1 he well deserves the rest which he now seeks4 ,as ,secretary of 8,the ,freedmen's ,missions ,aid ,society10 he has ably represented this ,association in its great work for the ,negro1 and has been enabled1 we trust1 to insure the success of the ,arthington ,mission1 by so far interesting our ,british friends in this new and promising missionary enterprise1 as to call forth many generous contributions toward its support4 ,as this number of the ,,missionary will be in the hands of our readers a few days before the close of our fiscal year1 ,september #cjth1 we make this reminder to the churches and friends who have not yet made their annual offering to our treasury4 ,we wish to pay every obligation1 and report the year closed without debt4 ,if the gifts we have reason to hope for are promptly forwarded1 we shall be able to do this4 99 99 99 99 99 ,one obstacle in the way of establishing missions in the interior of ,africa is illustrated by the difficulties experienced by the missionaries of the ,american ,board destined for ,bih4 ,messrs4 ,bagster1 ,sanders and ,miller landed at ,benguela on the coast1 #bej miles from ,bih1 ,november #ac1 #ahhj2 ,may #ast1 they had only reached ,bailunda1 #bjj miles on their way1 where they were still encamped awaiting the arrival of supplies4 ,five months and seventeen days had been exhausted by preparations and delays1 and the end had not come at last reports4 ,possibly1 however1 the knowledge gained meanwhile of the peculiarities of the country and the language and habits of the people will quite compensate for loss of time1 and enable them to lay the foundations for their future work far more wisely in consequence of the difficulties thus experienced4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,le ,moyne ,institute1 ,memphis1 ,tenn41 has established an industrial department for the purpose of teaching the girls the art of cookery4 ,a kitchen has been furnished with all needful appliances4 ,lectures are given on housekeeping and household economy1 which are followed by instruction in various methods of cooking different foods4 ,the girls all take turns in doing the work1 and in this way get the full advantage of the practice4 ,the following list of questions on which a class in cooking was examined at the last anniversary1 illustrates the scope of the work that is being done3 #a4 ,name seven principal components of the human body4 #b4 ,name some of the principal foods used to supply these elements4 #c4 ,at what time in the day is the most nutritious food required8 #d4 ,what is the object in cooking food8 #e4 ,name three of the most healthful and forward with energy and success4 ,according to the best estimates there are upwards of #ej1jjj colored people in that ,state1 and the number is steadily increasing4 ,the reports from our missionaries are favorable1 and indicate that much is to be done and that the refugees are eager for the needed assistance4 ,the interest taken in behalf of the exodites by the ,english people is worthy of the imitation of ,american philanthropists4 ,during the last few months1 friends in ,great ,britain have sent to ,mrs4 ,comstock for the ,freedmen's ,relief ,association1 #be1jjj worth of supplies1 consisting of wearing apparel1 household goods and kitchen utensils4 ,there has also been received from ,england during the last fifteen months #ac1jjj in money1 making a total amount of #hj1jjj for the treasury of the ,relief ,association2 two-thirds of this is said to have been given by the ,english people4 ,our appeal1 published some months since1 for #b1ejj to provide for the work we have recently inaugurated in ,kansas1 has not yet met with such response as we hoped to receive4 ,when so much is being done by friends abroad for this needy class of colored people1 we believe the patrons of the ,american ,missionary ,association would not have us do less for the ,kansas field than we have already undertaken4 ,will they not contribute so liberally for this special object that we shall be able to do a great deal more8 99 99 99 99 99 ,we clip from the ,new ,york ,tribune a paragraph relating to the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association in the ,south4 ,it comes from the pen of a special correspondent1 who1 as the editorial in the ,tribune says1 8has already written with great intelligence and fairness of the ,south and the ,southern people40 ,,success ,,of ,,colored ,,teachers4 8,the educational work in the ,south of the ,american ,missionary ,association is of the highest character1 and deserves all possible recognition and assistance4 ,the leading ,southern people everywhere speak of it gratefully and enthusiastically4 ,at the ,normal and ,agricultural ,institute1 ,hampton1 ,va41 at ,talladega ,college1 in ,alabama1 ,tougaloo ,university1 ,mississippi1 ,tillotson ,normal ,school1 ,austin1 ,texas1 and in several other colleges and normal schools which ,i have visited1 though the money endowment of the schools is scanty compared with the amounts which are needed1 the endowments in personal qualities and character1 as represented by the teachers1 are of a remarkably high order4 ,this is indispensable indeed1 for the peculiar nature of the work of educating the colored people of the ,south requires the best teachers that can be obtained4 ,in many of these institutions the boys learn something of various trades or mechanical occupations1 and of farming2 and the girls are taught sewing1 cooking and the care of a house4 ,i have visited a great number of the negro common and high schools1 which are taught by graduates and students of the colleges and normal schools which ,i have named1 and ,i think it very wonderful that so many of these negro teachers are successful4 ,they generally have to struggle against many disadvantages1 but nearly all whom ,i have seen have the confidence and respect of the leading white citizens where they are at work4 ,i have found a few fools among them1 of course1 but a great majority appear to be sensible1 earnest young men and women40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,talladega ,,college4 ,,president ,,henry ,s4 ,,de ,,forest4 ,this issue of the ,,missionary contains a view of ,stone ,hall1 built of ,alabama bricks at ,talladega4 ,its completion1 it is believed1 marks an era in the history of the ,college4 ,with better equipments than ever before1 with a field as large as it can wish1 the ,college1 backed by the history of half of one generation1 looks forward with hope to the growing and unfolding future4 ,from what has been we may attempt to previse something of what may be4 ,in #ahfg1 only fourteen years ago1 when the ,freedmen's ,bureau was acting as ,interex between past bloodshed and coming chaos1 the building now known as ,swayne ,hall1 with ample and beautiful grounds1 was purchased1 and the future ,college begun with spelling book and ,bible primer4 ,a few wise men of the ,east were there at its birth4 ,they wore blue and carried swords1 though in the scabbard4 ,but many black men1 who had been waiting through a long and starless night1 thought they heard an angel chorus and forthwith were praising ,god4 ,a white male high school building1 reared by the unrequited labor of the slave1 was bought at a mortgage sale and opened for the ,christian training of all1 without respect to color or sex4 ,men1 black either in pigment or in figment1 began to come1 and the reconstructed building gave shelter to school and church4 ,but a home was needed1 and two years later1 in #ahfi1 ,foster ,hall was built1 affording rooms for the girls and teachers1 and also table accommodations for the entire family4 ,from the beginning1 ,talladega has united the three great forces in shaping character1 namely1 the school1 the church and the home4 ,the foundations of the second building1 ,foster ,hall1 were laid while the ,ku ,klux ,klan was brandishing its weapons and grating its teeth4 ,the ,nehemiahs of that time carried their weapons in one hand and wielded the trowel with the other4 ,but they built1 and the ,god of ,heaven prospered them4 ,from that time forward the quadrennial period has been observed4 ,the year following a ,presidential election1 ,talladega ,college has inaugurated some new thing4 ,in #ahgc1 ,graves ,hall with additional land was secured for the theological department4 ,in #ahgg1 when ,president ,hayes was holding out the olive branch1 we attempted more of the peaceful pursuit of agriculture1 and ,winsted farm was bought4 ,and now in the beginning of ,president ,garfield's administration1 the third brick building is reared1 and ,stone ,hall opens its door to eighty young men4 ,illustration3 ,,stone ,,hall1 ,,talladega ,,college4 ,surely this is rapid progress4 ,not half of one generation has passed1 and the spelling book is supplemented by normal1 college preparatory1 to some extent college1 and theological studies4 ,some of those first primary students are preachers now4 ,the babes of those recent days have become the leaders of their race4 ,figures are not juicy2 but it is noteworthy that one hundred and sixteen of our students were teaching during the last summer vacation2 that three hundred and eighteen who had pursued something of ,normal studies have gone thence as pedagogues2 that of our forty-two ,theological students1 fifteen are pastors of ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 churches2 as many more are ministering in other fields1 and the remainder are still in training4 ,such facts are inspiriting and full of hope4 ,these results1 let it be remembered1 have been realized with meagre resources and poor appliances4 ,if now our means could be made more commensurate with our necessities1 if our resources could compare with our opportunities1 what a grand work of patriotism and ,christianity might not the ,college attempt and expect in the near future4 ,as regards the higher branches of learning1 the ,college has an unrivaled place in a great ,state1 half of whose population is black4 ,it has in ,alabama more than #fjj1jjj colored people from whom to draw its students4 ,it cares for muscle as well as mind1 and for heart most of all4 ,it teaches industry and thrift and economy4 ,it emphasizes the fundamentals1 and believes that the foundations of learning should be laid before the superstructure is attempted4 ,still in its care for the masses1 it is seeking for wise leaders1 and wishes to take certain elect souls through as long and as thorough a course of study as the circumstances will allow4 ,it aims especially to furnish men well equipped for the ,gospel ministry1 and thinks it has found a place for uplifting not only ,america1 but ,africa1 and that by laboring there among the foot-hills of our own ,blue ,ridge1 it may help beautify the ,dark ,continent with salvation4 ,as long as cotton grows on those black bottoms1 or those hills yield their treasures of iron and coal1 so long will ,talladega ,college be needed1 and so long it hopes to stay4 ,it desires to grow with the generations and increase with the ages4 ,already it feels its need of permanent investments1 and is asking for the beginning of an endowment4 ,it calls for the personal service of some1 and asks for the gifts of others who cannot offer themselves4 ,in both cases it gives an opportunity for usefulness as large and as lasting as can be desired4 99 99 99 99 99 ,rev4 ,a4 ,d4 ,mayo1 ,d4 ,d41 writes in ,the ,christian ,register of ,talladega ,college as follows3 8,this year the institution numbers two hundred young men1 women and children1 of whom eleven are in the theological1 eleven in the preparatory college1 forty-eight in the normal1 fifty-nine in the intermediate1 and seventy-two in the primary department4 ,rev4 ,henry ,s4 ,de ,forest is president1 and ,rev4 ,george ,w4 ,andrews pastor and instructor in theology4 ,three men and six women teachers in addition make up the teaching force2 and an abler1 more devoted1 and more attractive people we have never met in any seminary of learning in any part of the country4 ,they are all white1 and represent every section of the ,union and the ,dominion of ,canada4 ,talladega may congratulate itself on its 8negro college10 for probably no society1 is its care for its weakest members1 we hardly dare to measure our country by the history of its treatment of the ,negro1 the ,indian and the ,chinaman4 ,the diagram above is designed to illustrate the numerical strength of the white element of the ,united ,states1 as compared with three other elements of the population4 ,the large bordered square 7whose side is ten centimeters7 represents our country's total population--a round fifty millions4 ,the colored population--not less than six and a half millions--is signified by the square in the lower right hand corner4 ,close beside it is the little square which stands for the size of the ,indian--about three hundred thousand souls2 the shaded portion of the square means the wild ,indians--about fifty thousand4 ,the dreaded ,chinese element of our population can be seen by looking for the minute square1 which represents one hundred thousand4 ,this diagram1 in enlarged form1 can be effectively used in the ,missionary ,concert4 ,to a large square of stout paper1 smaller squares of different colored paper may be pinned4 ,correct proportions for paper or for blackboard illustrations would be1 following the order of the size of the population1 #ej1 #ah1 #c4hg and #b4bc centimeters respectively2 or1 in inches1 about #ai-b_/c1 #g-a_/aj1 #a-a_/b and #g_/h4 ,these figures denote the base lines of the respective squares4 ,how the powerful white man looms up and looms over the little group of the three ill-treated races huddled in the corner6 ,the black block makes no insignificant figure1 after all1 and its rapid growth suggests that to have1 through neglect1 a dense body of such dimensions depressed by ignorance were a blunder matched only by the wickedness of oppression4 ,the size of the ,indian and the ,chinaman suggests strongly the outrageous meanness of ill-using them2 it makes more striking the absurdity of a war policy against the red man1 and of the demagogue's appeal to fear on account of the presence of the ,chinaman4 ,what an opportunity1 on our own shores1 for strength to help weakness1 for knowledge to help ignorance1 for wealth to help poverty1 and so to fulfil the law of a ,christian civilization6 ,surely it is high time for us to heed the weighty saying of ,john ,milton3 8,a nation ought to be but as one huge ,christian personage1 one mighty growth or stature of an honest man1 as big and compact in virtue as in body2 for look1 what the ground and causes of single happiness to one man1 the same we shall find them to a whole state40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,giving1 ,,viewed ,,from ,a ,,commonplace ,,stand-,,point4 ,,rev4 ,,sam',l ,,scoville4 ,we think this whole matter of giving is put so high sometimes that it gets clear out of sight of common people4 ,we love now and then to put it down upon the basis of common virtues and moralities and see how it looks4 ,motives1 springing from the highest spiritual insight and experience1 are good and always in order1 but they are not essential to a fair judgment nor to proper action in this matter4 ,a man may have much less than ,john's spirituality or ,paul's experience to decide that there is a glaring inconsistency in praying for the building up of ,god's kingdom on the earth1 and then withholding the means necessary to that end2 in praying that the ,gospel may fly to earth's remotest bound1 and then refusing to contribute to the amount of a single wing feather to help its flight4 ,it does not take a great deal of spiritual insight to see that we cannot serve ,god and mammon at the same time in our churches with advantage1 any more than we can in our own hearts1 and that if the ,judas of worldliness carries the bag1 there is going to be a betrayal of the ,master some day4 ,the most common of common sense judgment is all that is needed for so simple a conclusion4 ,and it is not necessarily any high revelation required1 but only an appreciation and approval of square dealing1 to convince us that a church must so raise its money1 and to such amounts1 that it will be able to do its share towards carrying on the great work of evangelizing the world4 ,in these days of missionary spirit every church is to broaden out its parish lines until they meet only at the antipodes4 ,all the dark places of the earth belong to us to do something for1 to do what we can for1 and we are not to raise our money nor use it so that this part of the work is neglected4 ,to cheat the heathen out of his portion of the ,gospel is an immorality4 ,to help carry the ,gospel to the heathen in the uttermost parts of the earth must be accepted by every church as a part of its moral obligation4 ,this may make it necessary to put less expense into church choirs1 into adornments and improvements--that the minister and the sexton shall receive smaller salaries4 ,so be it2 let the whole field be looked over1 and let each receive the share adapted to him4 ,this is good morals in effective primary school up to a solid university class of twenty-five1 with a normal course for instruction in methods of teaching4 ,its pupils are of both sexes and colors1 and another year may possibly witness the white1 negro and ,indian quietly at work in the same class-rooms1 with no rivalry except the honest pride to excel in good scholarship and manly or womanly character4 ,but in this1 for the ,south1 exceptional feature1 there comes in the most interesting peculiarity of this most 8peculiar institution40 ,with a few exceptions from the ,north and the blue-grass region of ,kentucky1 the white students come from the great mountain country that overlooks the college campus4 ,this region1 in ,kentucky1 includes a country as extensive as the whole ,state of ,new ,hampshire1 and not unlike it in shape4 ,here1 in a mountain world1 divided into thirty counties1 out of hearing of the railroad whistle1 in many parts traversed only on horseback1 with no village containing five thousand and very few one thousand people1 dwells a population of nearly two hundred thousand1 more thoroughly isolated from the ,new ,america than the settlers in ,oregon or the latest hamlet in ,dakota4 ,living almost entirely from the land1 in the narrowest way1 on narrow means1 with few tolerable schools and a good deal of intolerable preaching1 with an almost total destitution of books1 newspapers and ordinary means of cultivation1 completely shut off from social contact with the ruling class of the ,state1 this people is peculiar in many ways4 ,out from this interesting region come the majority of the white students of ,berea4 ,few of them are able even to meet the yearly sum of seventy-five dollars1 for which their education is given them4 ,many of them1 even the girls1 walk from their homes1 and come in with nothing but a stout suit of clothes1 a good head and a brave heart1 paying their way as they go by such work as turns up1 and the small wages of mountain school-keeping in the long summer vacations4 ,they have no leisure to discuss the vexed topic of co-education that worries grave professors and doubting students at ,yale and ,harvard2 indeed1 the young fellow not unfrequently brings in his sister1 cousin and prospective 8annex0 to sit down at the same table of knowledge4 ,he is more anxious to lift his own end of a problem than to quarrel with the colored boy who is tugging at the other end4 ,indeed1 at ,berea one seems to be in that ideal university where an overpowering desire for study lifts the entire body of students above a whole class of questions that even yet convulse politicians and people1 schoolmen and churches1 ,south and ,north4 ,they live together2 the girls1 of course1 under careful supervision2 study1 work1 recite1 play and worship together2 students and teachers1 children and grown men and women1 in one family4 ,probably no ,american school of three hundred and seventy students goes through the year with so little disturbance1 is so easily governed1 or so generally absorbed in the work in hand4 ,this year the faculty consists of thirteen professors and teachers under ,president ,e4 ,h4 ,fairchild1 and three hundred and sixty-nine students1 of whom nine are in the college classical and twenty-five in the literary course1 forty-five in the normal1 and the remainder in the preparatory department4 ,the average age is sixteen4 ,two hundred and forty-nine are colored and one hundred and twenty are white2 two hundred and six males and one hundred and sixty-three females4 ,the instruction is excellent1 probably equal in quality to any school in the ,state2 and the proficiency of the pupils remarkable1 considering their previous estate4 ,the primary school-room contains twenty stout fellows ranging from eighteen to twenty-five years of age2 but it is not uncommon for one of these boys to go forth as a tolerable school-master among the colored people after two years' hard work at ,berea4 ,indeed1 if one were to look for signs of mental power1 he need not go outside the beautiful campus of this school4 ,we positively never witnessed such progress in learning as is the common talk among these teachers4 ,these stalwart young men and resolute maidens from the mountains buckle to their books with a will that knows no discouragement4 ,they go back to their homes to become the pride of their friends and the hope of their neighborhood4 ,nearly every student is a member of the church and the temperance society1 and the carrying of arms is cause of expulsion4 ,all classes of the ,southern people are good listeners4 ,we never addressed an audience of three hundred people that put us more decisively on our mettle than the crowd of students and villagers that did us the favor to crowd the chapel on four unpleasant nights to listen to our talks on education4 ,we do not propose to defend ,berea against any objector4 ,a school with such tough ,kentucky roots as ,fee1 ,hanson1 and their compeers2 with a history so romantic in its heroic past and so startling in its recent growth2 with a foundation on three hundred acres of 8sacred soil10 two hundred thousand dollars worth of excellent buildings1 in a situation unrivaled in beauty2 a faculty representing the best culture and character of the ,north-west1 with the rising ability of the ,south2 and a population of five hundred friendly people within sound of chapel bells2 can be trusted to plead its own cause against all comers4 ,it is already commending itself to many of the best people of ,kentucky1 receiving students from families of highest respectability in the neighborhood1 and on commencement days the great tabernacle is crammed with three thousand people1 from the humblest to the sowing began to produce a harvest1 not yet but partially reaped4 ,the recent addition of #ej1jjj to the endowment of ,berea ,college calls to mind the long1 weary days of struggle and almost despair in its early history4 ,the apparent success for a time1 to be followed by every sort of discouragement1 was not the least of the trials of those whose labors were the occasion for ,berea ,college4 ,churches were formed1 and many seemed heartily in favor of the ,gospel of ,christ1 which commands and secures love2 and then persecutions would arise1 and such a perfect torrent of public opinion against the 8abolitionists10 that large numbers would succumb to the adverse influences1 and the love of many would wax cold4 ,again1 such persecutions would arise1 that for a time only women were regarded as safe in attending the preaching services of ,mr4 ,fee and others4 ,after the school was started in #aheh1 which culminated in ,berea ,college1 there were still those great alternations of prosperity and apparent defeat which are so hard to bear4 ,one term1 large numbers of students would come1 including the children of slaveholders1 and the next1 only those would apply for admission who could endure the reproach of being called 8nigger lovers40 ,even after the war1 when two or three colored children entered the primary department1 there was such a stampede from every department1 that the principal1 in sorrow1 said to the few that timidly remained1 8,will ye also go away80 ,those years from '#ee to '#ff were years of sowing in great sorrow4 ,the missionaries of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 were very poor2 their salaries were #djj per year1 and some of that sum must be expended for those still poorer4 ,they lived in almost constant terror of their lives4 ,if for any cause they were north of the ,ohio ,river for a few weeks1 they breathed such a free atmosphere that it seemed almost like getting into ,heaven4 ,by many they were regarded with suspicion and contempt4 ,the writer remembers what cringing of the nerves he often had to endure1 in walking the streets of one of the central towns of ,kentucky4 ,people would stare at him as if he were a hyena let loose4 ,it is not easy to describe what were the sorrows of those years1 the greatest of which was that so many professed friends fell away in time of danger1 and that so many bearing the name of ,christ at those times were ready to deny their faith4 ,but this sowing has in some respects given way to reaping1 even in the lifetime of those who watered the ground with their tears4 ,now at ,berea is a college in some respects unlike any other in the land4 ,here1 three hundred in all1 are seen white and colored students in about equal numbers4 ,here is a sort of ,mecca for the colored people of the ,state1 and a door of hope for many in the mountain region1 who1 though white1 have had but few religious and educational privileges4 ,here is a college ably manned1 with the confidence of the ,north1 and growing it very difficult to get rid of a superstitious fear4 ,he1 however1 seemed to have overcome this entirely4 ,this was partly due to his early life4 ,when he was about ten years old he went to live with a white family in this ,territory4 ,he afterwards spent several years on board a sailing vessel1 and about twelve years ago he came to this reservation1 where he served as interpreter ten years4 ,he ,indians who had been drunk2 a fifth had escaped to the ,british side1 and was free from the trial4 ,this kind of business occasionally comes in as an aid to the agent4 ,i seldom have anything to do with it on the reservation1 as the agent can attend to it2 but when among ,indians1 off from the reservation1 where neither of us can be more than once in six months or thereabouts1 it sometimes saves talking ,gospel to them on the ,sabbath on his trips4 ,on reaching ,dunginess the afternoon was spent in introducing an ,indian from ,british ,columbia1 who had taken me there in his canoe1 to the were ambitious that he should be educated2 and when1 a short time previous1 the step-father had sickened and died1 one obstacle seemed removed4 ,another obstacle was lack of means1 and for that the
