threw his whole soul into that conflict4 ,he was selected by the constituents of ,giddings1 as the one most worthy to succeed that veteran opponent of slavery in ,congress4 ,after his nomination to the ,presidency1 in his first regular speech1 made in response to a serenade in ,new ,york ,city by the ,boys in ,blue1 he said1 speaking of the ,freedmen3 8,we will stand by them until the sun of liberty1 fixed in the firmament of the ,constitution1 shall shine with equal ray upon every man1 white or black1 throughout the ,union4 ,fellow-citizens1 fellow-soldiers1 in this there is all the beneficence of eternal justice1 and by this we will stand forever40 ,a noble sentiment1 which must become a fact established beyond the possibility of successful assault before the nation can enter upon the path of peace or safety4 ,in reply to an address by a delegation of colored men who visited him in ,mentor1 just before he left home to assume the duties of his high office1 he said1 in effect1 that it was not within the power of the ,president by appointments and official recognitions to raise the colored people to the level of social recognition and honor4 ,the path to this leads appointment to the nation which he held responsible for his condition--to the nation endangered by that condition--he said in his inaugural address1 which his successor1 nor ,congress1 nor the people should neither forget nor fail to heed3 8,the census has already sounded the alarm in the appalling figures which mark how dangerously high the tide of illiteracy has risen among our voters and their ,christians1 and bringing parties out of the path of the church to a realization of their responsibilities to ,god and society4 ,i visited and assisted ,bro4 ,snell at ,kingston during a revival at that place1 in which there were several conversions prior to my leaving1 among which were four white men of respectability in that community4 ,i have just returned home from a revival at my former joined our church4 ,after my meetings were over1 ,i helped others4 ,at ,shelby ,iron ,works twelve or fifteen gave their hearts to the ,lord1 and at ,talladega the meetings were very interesting and the operation at the autopsy4 ,last year this department had #ha students 7a majority being white71 and this year the number will sum up to nearly quite a hundred4 ,it is open to ladies as well as will soon result from these efforts1 and one such was organized last month4 ,they gave special attention to encouraging young men to prepare for usefulness as teachers and ministers1 but hardly any proper facilities exist there1 and poverty prevents them from going elsewhere to obtain education4 ,we are continually tried by not having the means to aid those seeking the higher education1 as the larger proportion of these than ever4 ,seven of our returning students report that they have taught schools this vacation4 ,a few more who will return are still out teaching4 ,of the few students1 sixty-one reported having come through the agency of our graduate teachers1 and fourteen more through that of undergraduates4 ,one girl brought nine4 ,several of our graduate teachers came in person to bring their students4 ,forty-seven students reported as having worked as ,sunday-school teachers this summer4 ,some have been active in temperance work1 and give interesting account of their efforts1 especially among the young4 ,they find the old people hard to touch4 ,they are1 of course1 most of them too young themselves to do as effective work as our graduate teachers4 ,a revival has been in progress through the summer in some of the colored churches of ,hampton1 and our students who stayed at the school to work through vacation1 took part in the meetings to some extent4 ,our own ,sunday-school organization was kept up under our resident graduates4 ,in the course of the summer our students here also interested themselves in an effort to aid the ,tuskegee ,normal ,school1 ,alabama1 taught by our two graduates1 ,mr4 ,booker ,washington and ,miss ,olivia ,davidson2 and succeeded by their own exertions in raising by a festival and otherwise1 #ge towards the payment of a small farm 7already half paid for71 by the purchase of which ,mr4 ,washington is trying to put his school on a manual labor basis4 ,the ,hampton ,school ,mission ,association1 organized last year1 will continue its work by helping in the ,sunday-schools in the town1 ,bible reading in the jail and poor-house1 and among the aged poor1 and aiding them in other ways within their power4 ,our young men have taken a great pleasure in giving a day's work now and then to patch up some poor old cabin against the severity of the winter1 or to supply some poor old aunty with food and fire4 ,as to your inquiry for the number1 condition and wants of students seeking a higher education1 ,i suppose if the question were put to the school1 how many would like to pursue a higher education1 they would rise en masse1 without always much appreciation of the labor or the value in it2 but the ,hampton ,school is so well-known to be established on the basis of self-help1 and for the purpose of immediate helpfulness1 that it draws to it chiefly the class who are glad of a chance to work their way through school1 and are seeking to fit themselves as promptly as possible for the work of life4 ,the opportunities for this1 in learning trades and in ,normal training1 are greater this year than ever4 ,general ,armstrong left on ,september #bgth for ,dakota1 with #cj ,indian students1 #bc boys and school-house remained comparatively uninjured1 but the 8,home0 was rendered roofless and floods of water poured through the building4 ,the colored people in this vicinity suffered extremely4 ,hundreds who lived on the low islands or rice islands1 which are scarce ever covered with tidal waters1 were overwhelmed1 their houses destroyed and large numbers drowned4 ,even yet1 a month since the storm1 bodies of the dead negroes are being found in out-of-the-way places4 ,a planter told me today of two such found a few days ago by his reapers in the middle of his rice fields4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,atlanta drought has affected all this region1 so that the cotton crop was small and required early attention1 and pupils were taken out of school and attendance and pay were rendered small4 ,we meet under the shadow of sorrow1 having lost five students by death during the vacation1 one of them a beloved member of the senior class4 ,we hope that the tender and thoughtful feeling which manifestly prevails will be after cotton picking is over4 ,among the new students is a young ,methodist preacher1 in charge of a circuit in an adjoining county4 ,he seems quite in earnest to learn4 ,another of our excellent young men was converted while teaching during the summer1 and has done good work in ,sunday-school1 temperance and revival meetings4 ,another taught school in the same county1 and both labored earnestly in the temperance cause4 ,a bill was passed by the legislature this summer1 allowing the people of that county to vote on the question of prohibiting the sale of liquor within their own limits4 ,these two young teachers1 aided by another former pupil teaching in an adjoining county1 who has considerable talent for public speaking1 worked hard for prohibition4 ,the result is seen in the news that comes this morning1 that prohibition carried the day by a majority of nineteen votes4 ,several new scholars have come into our school1 and a larger number will yet come through the efforts of these young teachers4 ,the attendance at opening is larger than for several preceding years1 and indications point toward a steady increase4 ,atlanta ,university being within one hundred miles1 draws off many of the older students1 but what is our loss is their gain4 ,the dark and ignorant communities of our common-wealth are being enlightened slowly but surely1 by the earnest young teachers from this and other schools1 and their influence is not small on the side of morality1 religion and progress4 ,the school opens more favorably than for several years before1 with an increase in the corps of teachers1 and general prospects for extended usefulness4 ,there is a growing number of those who desire advanced education1 whose purpose it is to fit themselves to enter some of the higher institutions4 ,their greatest hindrance is their poverty2 but the pay for school teaching is improving somewhat1 although most have to wait six or eight months before receiving what they earn4 ,there is1 however1 general progress in most localities1 and we are glad to believe that the ,lewis ,high ,school is doing its share1 reaching out to uplift this whole region of country4 99 99 99 99 #ahgi4 ,we opened with an attendance of #aec1 #ai of which number are members of the advanced grammar and high school departments4 ,a number of last year's advanced pupils have indicated their intention to re-enter shortly4 ,as yet1 last year's scholars who have been employed in teaching have not returned4 ,from a number of these we have received word with reference to their work1 and learned of their expectations to be with us again4 ,one young man wrote of establishing a temperance society1 and laboring in a revival in the local church4 ,he had a good ,sunday-school which he had supplied with 8,quarterlies0 containing notes on the lessons1 and he seemed to be accomplishing much good4 ,his location is one where for many years he has taught school4 ,he writes that he expects to return to ,burrell4 ,another young man1 who says that he will re-enter1 was last year in school here for the first time1 and was brought through the agency of the former4 ,he has written intelligently of his ,sunday-school1 and has also sent on funds to me to be expended in papers4 ,twin brothers from a town in an adjoining county1 and last year's pupils1 were converted at a special revival season in the ,congregational church here during the winter4 ,to one of the teachers1 one brother wrote that he was 8doing the best he could teaching in the ,sunday-school40 ,the other said that 8the people out there did not know much about managing a ,sunday-school properly1 but he was working in it1 and lent his 8,quarterly0 around among others1 showing them how to study their lessons from it40 ,these brothers are about #ae years old4 ,we learn of the expected return of a pupil of '#gi who has been laboring very acceptably for some time in ,louisiana in ,sunday-school1 church and temperance work4 ,he brings a recruit for ,burrell also4 ,another last year's pupil of ours1 from the ,high school grade1 leaves the scholar's seat to occupy a position behind the teacher's desk1 in the building where for years she has been a studious learner4 ,she is a teacher in the ,a4 ,m4 ,e4 ,sunday-school of this place1 and a member of the choir4 ,two other young ladies1 former classmates of hers in ,burrell1 are1 for the second year1 teaching with us also4 ,the nature of our school being1 as it is1 a city school1 we have not tried to crowd our work upon the attention of non-residents4 ,we have had1 however1 pupils from the country and adjoining counties1 every year for some time1 with rare exceptions4 ,new pupils from elsewhere1 brought through the agency of others1 have been referred to above4 ,a very promising young man entered this year from a county adjoining this one on the east1 who had heard of the school from former pupils4 ,three persons from a northern county are1 ,i am informed1 to come in company with a last year's pupil4 ,the condition of the cotton crop is such1 that some are probably remaining away to assist in gathering and storing the same4 ,this is often the case with country scholars4 ,the second day of the present session1 one came to us as a pupil who has sat in the legislative hall of this ,state as one of our county's representatives4 ,he has been a teacher improves with every year1 showing that others are at work elsewhere4 ,we have received already this year several students of advanced grade1 who have come prepared to enter the college classes4 ,at this time we are negotiating with one who desires to enter the senior college class and graduate next commencement4 ,we expect him in a few days4 ,the past years of schooling are beginning to tell upon the higher training of the colored youth1 and those who come to ,fisk for the first time take much higher grades than new students were wont to do a few years ago4 ,most of the old students have been engaged in teaching during the summer vacation4 ,it is estimated that of #he in the collegiate department1 #fj or #fe taught school during the summer4 ,wherever these teachers go1 they secure a good name for industry1 conscientiousness1 ability and energy4 ,we are constantly getting good words from white people1 directors1 superintendents and private citizens in regard to the faithfulness and acceptance with which our students discharge their duties4 ,almost all those who teach are ,christians and engage in ,christian work1 as a matter of course1 when they begin their day schools4 ,as a general thing1 they enter at once into the ,sabbath-school if there is one1 and start one if there is not1 and generally get the entire neighborhood enlisted4 ,there are two interesting features in relation to the students1 the like of which we have never had before4 ,during the past few years the trustees of the ,peabody fund have sustained a ,normal school for white pupils4 ,the effort has been made to secure an appropriation from the ,state for this school in the years that are past4 ,at the last session of the ,legislature an appropriation of #aj1jjj was made for ,normal schools1 #b1ejj for the colored children of the ,state1 that being their relative share4 ,the ,board of ,education for the ,state1 to whom the disbursement of this fund was left1 decided that the fund for the colored students should be divided among #ej pupils1 and that they should have the privilege of choosing between five schools to which they should go4 ,each pupil would thus be entitled to #ej1 and each school would receive on an average #aj students4 ,up to the present time ,fisk has received #ah out of the #ej1 and it is well known that many of the ,senators who had the power of appointment had not taken action4 ,we have no doubt that others will come as the year passes by4 ,the other feature is this4 ,several colored men were elected to the last ,legislature1 and as members had the right to appoint cadets to the ,east ,tennessee ,university1 of course they all appointed colored cadets4 ,some other republican members also appointed colored cadets4 ,this threw the trustees of the ,east ,tennessee ,university into great perplexity4 ,it is against the law of the ,state to educate white and colored pupils in the same institution3 it is also very much against the traditional prejudices not only of the trustees of the ,university1 but also of the people of the ,state4 ,the trustees met1 and after a thorough discussion determined to make arrangements with ,fisk ,university if possible1 to take their colored cadets at #cj apiece4 ,fisk ,university was not averse to the arrangement1 and so the question was settled4 ,we have now in the ,university seven cadets1 students of the ,east ,tennessee ,university4 ,it is accepted by all here as an important truth1 that the longer we can keep a student the better it will be for him and the institution and the work4 ,the students in the collegiate department give tone to the whole institution4 ,every department is lifted to a higher standard by the high standard of the college department4 ,as the college graduates go out into ,many a time my heart has ached for poor ,chatham4 ,but you must remember that colored children are no better than white ones1 and ,i am sure you have seen some poor awkward white boy laughed at till perhaps your kind eyes filled with tears4 ,then ,i suppose ,i don't see the funny side of comical sights so quickly as some1 and ,thomas ,chatham did look queer4 ,although he is quite short1 he has very large feet and broad shoulders1 with a big head set nearly flat upon the latter4 ,then he was very poor1 and did not know how to make the best of the poor clothes he had4 ,his shoes were run down at the heel1 so that when he walked he shuffled along1 lest1 ,i suppose1 his shoes should fall off4 ,he learned with great difficulty and made very droll blunders1 but he never lost his temper or got out of patience4 ,at the beginning of each year a new set of thoughtless scholars would make fun of his looks and his blunders1 till his calm dignity told louder than words that he lived in an atmosphere far above that level where the taunts or esteem of his fellows had much weight4 ,his home was two or three miles from school1 yet he trudged on year after year1 often drenched with rain and chilled into ague1 hoping that some time he would know enough to serve his people as a teacher in a country school4 ,several of his teachers advised him to learn a trade1 judging that from all human sharpen faculties2 a means to bring the student up to manhood with ability to perform thenceforth the hard work of a man in his allotted sphere4 ,to that end no part of fundamental study could be spared4 ,a thorough1 exact scholar himself1 he was satisfied with nothing less than thoroughness and exactness in those whom he taught4 ,patient1 forbearing1 forgiving1 he held a high place in the hearts of his pupils1 and with all his gentleness of spirit he ever maintained a purity of discipline4 ,mr4 ,haley first made a public profession of religion and united with the ,congregational church
