,institutions1 a goodly number of them having graduated from the theological classes at ,talladega ,college1 ,fisk and ,straight ,universities4 ,it may be said1 with grateful assurance and peculiar emphasis1 that this ,association establishes its churches4 ,it prepares a constituency by its day and ,sabbath-schools1 and from this educates a ministry4 ,in this way it develops a demand for a pure church1 and also the possibility of maintaining it when established4 ,it will be observed that nearly all the churches reported have been blessed during the year with additions to their numbers1 and that many have made improvements upon their property4 ,the ,sabbath-schools have everywhere received due attention1 and much of the progress in the different churches has been made possible by the earnest1 prayerful and unremitting labors of our missionaries in this department of religious work4 ,missionary meetings and societies have been greatly encouraged and the cause of temperance widely promoted4 ,many of the young converts have found their way to institutions of learning1 and many have engaged in teaching and missionary service4 ,when it is taken into account that these young churches are reformed churches1 and that their church life is a new experience among the colored people1 where they shine as lights in the world1 it will be readily seen1 we think1 that this branch of our work augurs most hopefully a day of better things for the new ,south1 and that the hearts and hands of these brethren1 whose letters will be found elsewhere1 should be strengthened1 and their numbers largely increased4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,place ,,of ,,the ,,church ,,in ,,the ,,work ,,of ,,missions4 ,in these days1 when science is pushing her inquiries in every direction with reference to the discovery of new facts1 in order that she may deduce therefrom the course of nature and the system of the universe1 there is danger that we overlook the basis in man's moral constitution on which1 alone1 knowledge can have the highest significance and value4 ,the drift is seen not merely in the public schools1 but in the college and the professional seminary1 which1 more and more1 are reducing education to the acquisition of facts1 or to a simple intellectual drill4 ,the scientific method1 so called1 has no place for moral agents or moral causes1 and so its account of the world is forever rendered on a physical rather than on a metaphysical basis4 ,with such a tendency in education1 this ,association can have no sympathy4 ,it is the friend of all good learning1 and will do its utmost to advance education2 but it does not believe that a man can be well or symmetrically educated until his moral faculties are disciplined in advance of1 and equally with1 his intellectual4 ,for this reason it would put the church at the center and foundation of all its work4 ,in this respect it would co-operate with ,god1 accepting ,his own appointed agency for the moral instruction of mankind4 ,the church1 as the great moral teacher1 bears the stamp of a divine origin and authority4 ,its function is to teach divine truth1 and to put man into right moral relations to the deep order of the universe4 ,any system of education1 then1 which ignored the church1 or even set her in the background1 would fail in a well rounded development of all the mental powers4 ,a partial substitute may be found in other professions and other institutions1 but nothing can take the place of the church as the authoritative teacher of moral and spiritual truth4 ,it is well to remember1 also1 that that which best develops and educates the moral powers is the best possible discipline for the mind itself4 ,no subjects require clearer perception1 sharper analysis and more discriminating reason than moral subjects1 and no men show keener minds than those who have been trained to reason on moral questions4 ,illustrations of this in ancient times are found in the ,jewish patriarchs1 and in modern times in the people of ,scotland and of ,new ,england4 ,and yet the common schools of these latter countries1 until within fifty years1 were of the rudest sort1 and only taught the simplest elements of an ,english education4 ,but their people1 trained in the sanctuary1 under a ministry which was able to reason of righteousness1 temperance and a judgment to come1 were as strong intellectually as they were tough and clear-minded morally4 ,senator ,hoar1 in his recent oration before the law school of ,yale ,college1 asserted and proved that the best lawyers of the last generation were indebted to the strong pulpits of ,new ,england more than to anything else for their intellectual clearness1 and for their judicial discrimination and force4 ,let there be a strong pulpit in any community1 and there will be strong men around it1 mentally and morally1 though the schools are of the simplest4 ,on the other hand1 if the pulpit be weak and the outcoming moral influences be feeble1 though the schools be ever so well equipped and endowed1 the people around will lack high purpose1 and scholarship itself will be frivolous and effeminate1 destitute of the rugged strength which comes to natures fed from the deep roots of moral earnestness and conviction4 ,it need hardly be said that the great need of the ,south1 especially among the colored people1 is a strong church and a pure church2 for slavery damaged the colored man morally vastly more that it did intellectually4 ,indeed1 his intellect was rather sharpened by the invention and craft on which it was constantly put1 while the forces which strengthened the will and nourished a pure heart were the weakest possible2 and yet nine persons out of ten suppose the damage was intellectual1 and are greatly surprised when our teachers assure them that colored children are as bright1 and learn as readily1 as white children4 ,a moment's reflection would satisfy any one that the weakness would be on the moral side1 for the reason that the life of the slave was so ordered as to ignore all moral distinctions and to violate all moral obligations4 ,hence1 the building up should be strongest on the moral side4 ,no greater mistake could be made than to attempt to graft on to a low moral character a high degree of intellectual culture4 ,should we send forth a generation of students1 with sharp wits and dull moral perceptions1 we might contribute to the roll of more adroit villains1 but we should add little to the list of good men4 ,the church1 therefore1 should be emphasized at all points and at all times4 ,it should command for its preachers the best and the ablest men4 ,both races need this4 ,only this can destroy the conditions which made it possible that white blood should now be running in the veins of three-fourths of the colored people4 ,the ,southern pulpit has failed to sufficiently enforce either good morals or practical righteousness4 ,for lack of this1 slavery was possible1 and dueling and violence covered the land with blood4 ,the remedy for this is a new and right system of moral teaching4 ,this1 we repeat1 is the peculiar function of the pulpit4 ,that this may be made possible1 churches pure and intelligent must be established all over the ,south4 ,it should be done now1 because we are laying the foundations and determining the character of the coming generations4 ,if the first crop of leaders are morally weak1 they will enfeeble their successors1 and perhaps vitiate the seed and the crop for all time to come4 ,we need to put into the ,african blood the iron of the ,puritan faith and purpose1 so that they may do for the ,african continent what our fathers did for ,america4 ,the first men sent to that dark land should hold the ideas and principles out of which may be evolved churches1 schools1 homes and ,christian states1 from the mouths of the ,nile and the ,congo clear down to the golden ,cape4 ,if we cannot inoculate the colored race with those moral sensibilities and forces which will render them charitable1 humane and just1 then we look to them in vain for help in the salvation of our own land1 as well as in the founding of ,christian institutions and ,christian states for the continent of ,africa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,healing ,,of ,,the ,,nation',s ,,wound4 ,it was a gaping1 festering sore that was left by the fratricidal war4 ,a speedy healing was not to be expected4 ,it took nearly a century for the mother country and ,america to get over their grievance4 ,there is much of encouragement that this later feud will be more speedily composed4 ,there have been some special influences at work4 ,the occurrence of the ,centennial tended to divert attention from the old trouble1 to arouse the spirit of patriotism and to abate ill-will4 ,the prevalence of an epidemic at the ,south for two seasons gave the ,north an opportunity to express moral and material sympathy1 which did much to awaken reciprocal good-will on the part of the people of that section4 ,when ,president ,garfield was shot1 the people of the ,south rose up with as much indignation and sympathy as those of the ,north4 ,it was a benediction for the ,nation to be lifted by such a ground-swell of emotion1 and that the impulse of ,christian patriotism4 ,we feel confident that ,president ,garfield1 restored to soundness1 will by this dreadful dispensation be all the more disposed to temper his administration with fairness and righteousness1 such as will carry on the process of healing in the body politic4 ,the ,peabody fund and its judicious disbursement at the ,south is doing its work of palliating feeling4 ,miss ,willard's tour of temperance lecturing through the ,south was a hopeful revelation of harmonious sentiment4 ,dr4 ,mayo's eminently successful educational visitation was in the same line4 ,then it is also clearly manifest that the scheme of the ,north for aiding the ,south in the education of the colored people is coming to be recognized there-away as one of pure philanthropy and patriotism4 ,the testimony of ,dr4 ,haygood in his book1 8,our ,brother in ,black10 to this effect1 is but the expression of not a little of latent sentiment4 ,he pronounces 8immortal honor0 upon these teachers4 ,he says that without such service the ,south would be uninhabitable by this time4 ,our teachers and preachers1 dwelling there from year to year1 and returning ,north betimes1 become interpreters of the mutual and improving good feeling4 ,they command respect at the ,south1 they retain affectionate regard at the ,north1 and so become a bond of union between the two sections4 ,more and more this process will go on with happiest results4 ,the ,national ,cotton ,exposition to be held this fall at ,atlanta1 upon a gigantic scale1 will be another mighty loom for weaving the fabric of national good-will4 ,we be one people1 with one ,english inheritance of language and history1 of character and civilization1 with a common possession of ,revolutionary glory and of pride in our national development4 ,we must let the dead bury their dead4 ,we must push on in all proper ways to remove prejudice and to restore confidence4 ,service for our common country in the way of evangelization and of righteous civil administration1 will be one of the most effective aids in healing the ,nation's wound4 99 pursued her work1 discovering and relieving much of want1 and speaking to the neglected4 ,a temperance society has been organized1 embracing in its membership those not connected with the ,college by a large front door and steps and cornice4 ,out of their deep poverty the people raised about one dollar at each monthly concert of prayer for missions4 ,two lady members are engaged in teaching in public schools acceptably4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,marion1 ,,ala4 ,,rev4 ,a4 ,w4 ,,curtis4 ,marion is an old town1 quite an educational centre1 but in all other respects left high and dry on a side switch4 ,hence our church and work is a good deal like that of ,new ,england--a good place to emigrate from4 ,there is not business enough to give work at home1 and the young people have to go away2 we are trying to make it a good home and training-school1 and look for the results elsewhere4 ,this summer nearly all our men are abroad for work--many at ,tougaloo1 working on the new building--some renting land in the district around4 ,most of the young women as they marry find homes abroad for the same reason4 ,the children and young people who were converted last spring hold out well1 and form the principal part of our number at prayer meeting4 ,we see occasionally also those who united with other churches4 ,ten united on confession at our first communion1 four at the second4 ,so far as ,i can learn1 all our church are strictly temperance folks4 ,our ,sunday-school is small4 ,we have had three ,sunday-schools kept up in the country by members of our church who had day schools in those districts4 ,most of our members have homes which they are making more valuable by improvement1 while property in town has greatly depreciated4 ,our church have undertaken to raise #ajj and to build a school-house this summer4 ,it may be a question whether they will succeed in the latter as soon as they have planned4 ,ten of the young people of our church have been at ,talladega during the past year1 two at ,fisk1 and one in ,tougaloo4 ,four of our members have been teaching school with good success and one is preaching4 ,a young man who graduated with honor at the ,normal here last week was church by profession1 and a temperance society has been organized4 ,it is the only temperance society in connection with any of the colored churches in town4 ,when ,i came here ,i found an old house1 that had been used for a bar-room and gambling shop1 fitted up for a house of worship4 ,this has been abandoned1 the lot upon which it stood well fenced1 and a meeting house built4 ,we sent one pupil been growth in several directions4 #ast1 morally4 ,the standard in moral instruction and practice is higher1 by a marked difference1 than at the beginning of our church life4 ,the church is not a harbor for unholy and impure persons1 where the outward profession atones for the faults of the private life2 but the scene of watchfulness and charitable judgment1 where the weak are helped1 the penitent encouraged1 and the persistent wrong-doer is discountenanced and disfellowshiped4 #b;d4 ,in intelligence4 ,the ministers and church members have a clearer understanding of the proprieties of time1 as he is to-day4 ,the church has been disturbed during the year by a few bad men1 ambitious to rule1 and so obstructing the progress of the ,lord's work and restricting the influence and usefulness of the pastor2 but by patience and wise counsels the difficulty seems to be tided over1 and the church started on a new career of prosperity4 ,morris ,brown ,chapel1 ,new ,orleans 7,rev4 has had a constant though not rapid growth4 ,its membership of #aaj represents a good deal of hard work in prayer4 ,a few converts are gathered in every year4 ,the church has a small debt of about #bej1 which it is struggling bravely to discharge4 ,whenever a dollar can be transferred from the fund for ordinary expenses to sinking fund it is done1 and the church will celebrate its jubilee when the last dollar of indebtedness is paid4 ,algiers and ,gretna4--,there are two churches across the river from ,new ,orleans1 one in ,algiers and the other in ,gretna4 ,rev4 ,james ,craig is pastor at ,algiers1 and ,rev4 ,putney ,w4 ,ward at ,gretna4 ,with better schools in these two places1 there would be better churches4 ,the mass of the people need enlightening1 and until it is done the church will dash against the breakers4 ,ignorance is never in accord with quiet1 progressive and spiritual church life4 ,these churches have now reached a crisis in their history which means either fatal disaster or a new and better lease of life4 ,may ,god guide and bring order out of confusion4 ,in the parish of ,st4 ,mary we have an interesting and hopeful group of churches4 ,terrebonne 7,rev4 ,daniel ,clay1 ,pastor74--,the house of worship is new1 tasteful and admirably fitted for its purposes4 ,neatly painted1 with good bell1 the church-yard surrounded by a whitewashed fence1 and in the rear the pretty cottages of the pastor and his son1 nothing more could be desired4 ,it is really beautiful4 ,and how happy ,bro4 ,clay is--how proud of his church and immense congregation6 ,he feels that ,god has been good to him1 and after many fierce storms1 has conducted him to a peaceful and happy old age4 ,this church was built and paid for by the voluntary offerings of the people4 ,i think they have never solicited a dollar of outside aid4 ,they have built just as fast as they could pay for the work4 ,no shadow of debt has ever dimmed their joy4 ,the ,association met with this church in ,april4 ,great congregations flocked to the meetings1 and immediately upon the adjournment of the ,association1 a revival of peculiar grace and tenderness was enjoyed1 and some precious souls 8given their liberty40 ,terrebonne ,station 7,rev4 ,benjamin ,field1 licensed ,preacher1 acting ,pastor74 ,lafourche ,crossing 7,rec4 ,wm4 ,reid1 ,pastor74--,these two churches are under the general supervision of ,bro4 ,clay1 and look to him for counsel as to a father4 ,there is a peculiar bond binding these little churches of like faith together4 ,when the ,lord's work is revived in one1 the others hasten to share in the blessing1 and when trouble is developed in one1 the others are quick to sympathize and help4 ,the ,lafourche church are proposing to buy a new lot and build a pretty chapel4 ,they have very great faith in their prospective growth4 ,new ,iberia4--,st4 ,paul's church is one of the strongest and most stable in the ,association4 ,the ,september gale leveled their old building4 ,it was a blessing in disguise1 for a new and substantial church has risen in its place4 ,how much the stimulus of necessity will accomplish6 ,rev4 ,w4 ,r4 ,polk1 a protege of ,dr4 ,cuyler1 is the pastor4 ,the services are orderly and intelligent4 ,situated in the midst of one of the most fruitful sections of the state1 and almost every colored man owning his homestead1 and some of them in the realization of the freedman's ambition1 8forty acres and a mule10 there is a look of prosperity about church and people that is refreshing4 ,they are now self-supporting4 ,they are also rejoicing over several additions to the church on profession of faith4 ,we must now group together a few churches1 small as yet1 but giving promise of great usefulness4 ,they are situated in important full of faith in the increase of future years4 ,god grant their faith may be rewarded4 ,churches at ,bayou ,du ,large 7,rev4 ,humphrey ,williams1 ,pastor71 and at ,grand ,bayou 7,s4 ,williams1 ,pastor71 are new churches1 organized within the year1 attracted by the simplicity1 liberty and spirituality of the ,congregational mode of government4 ,they have cordially united hands with us4 ,abberville--,needs a house of worship1 and until it is built we cannot begin to write its history4 ,a church without a shelter is a church in the wilderness indeed2 and in this part of the world is no church1 but a scattered flock seeking a fold4 ,lake ,peigneur 7,rev4 ,c4 ,e4 ,smith1 ,pastor74--,this church enjoys stated preaching4 ,when the pastor is absent1 some layman who has the 8gift0 of number added during the past year1 #ac2 average attendance at the ,sabbath-school1 #aib4 ,four other ,sabbath-schools are under the supervision of members of the church2 in these there is a total
