,park #bh-bi ,,preface ,since most of ,lassen ,volcanic ,national ,park can best be seen and enjoyed by walking the trails1 this booklet is written to help those who wish to know more about the park4 ,much can be observed from the ,lassen ,park ,road1 including some of the best scenery and most interesting geology1 but to become thoroughly acquainted with the park and to appreciate fully what it has to offer1 there is no better way than walking the trails4 ,thirty-four trails are briefly described in this booklet4 ,rather than give a complete description of each trail1 an attempt is made to indicate the highlights of each1 giving enough information so that a hiker can decide which trails will interest him most4 ,the author would like to express his thanks and appreciation to a number of persons who have helped to make this publication possible3 ,to ,raymond ,l4 ,nelson1 former ,chief ,park ,naturalist1 for guidance and sketch maps2 ,lester ,d4 ,bodine1 former ,chief ,park ,ranger2 ,harold ,l4 ,stanley1 ,robert ,ball1 and ,h4 ,trickey ,lewis1 seasonal rangers1 for their aid and information2 and to ,dorothy ,matteson1 art department of ,chico ,state ,college for the excellent illustrations4 ,,introduction ,lassen ,volcanic ,national ,park1 established on ,august #i1 #aiaf1 and containing more than #afj square miles1 is administered by the ,national ,park ,service1 ,u4 ,s4 ,department of the ,interior4 ,the ,national ,park ,system1 of which this park is a unit1 is dedicated to conserving the scenic1 scientific1 and historic heritage of the ,united ,states for the benefit and enjoyment of its people4 ,created in #ahdi1 the ,department of the ,interior--,america's ,department of ,natural ,resources--is concerned with the management1 conservation1 and development of the ,nation's water1 wildlife1 mineral1 forest1 and park and recreation resources4 ,it also has major responsibilities for ,indian and ,territorial affairs4 ,as the ,nation's principal conservation agency1 the ,department works to assure that nonrenewable resources are developed and used wisely1 that park and recreational resources are conserved for the future1 and that renewable resources make their full contribution to the progress1 prosperity1 and security of the ,united ,states--now and in the future4 ,,using ,,the ,,trails3 ,a ,,few ,,tips ,,for ,,beginners #a4 ,,stay ,,on ,,the ,,trail4 ,this is usually a simple matter1 but in a few places animal trails obscure the main trail4 ,on some trails orange markers are nailed to trees to guide the hiker1 and1 on others1 rock cairns mark the way4 #b4 ,,avoid ,,short ,,cuts4 ,in the long run1 they are not short cuts1 as they use up more energy and are more tiring than the somewhat longer trail4 ,they are often dangerous to the person using them and1 also1 dislodged rocks may injure hikers below4 ,in addition1 they always damage the trail by filling it with debris and by accelerating erosion4 #c4 ,,keep ,,your ,,bearings4 ,in ,lassen ,volcanic there are plenty of landmarks1 so this should not be difficult4 ,a good map will help1 and topographic maps of ,lassen are available4 ,if you are going to return via the same trail and have any doubts about remaining on it1 use the ,indian method of looking back frequently4 #d4 ,,be ,,careful ,,with ,,fire4 ,a campfire should be soaked and the ashes thoroughly mixed with water until every ember is out4 ,to build a campfire anywhere except at a regular campground you must secure a special permit from a ,park ,ranger4 ,do not smoke while hiking on the trails4 ,when you want a smoke1 sit down1 break your match before throwing it away and completely extinguish the butt before leaving4 #e4 ,,keep ,,together4 ,it is the person who is separated from the rest who gets lost4 #f4 ,,conserve ,,your ,,strength4 ,the elevations in ,lassen ,volcanic are considerably higher than most people are used to1 and you may tire more easily4 ,if you start out at a pace which seems slow you are more likely to finish than if you hurry4 ,rest often4 #g4 ,,carry ,a ,,light ,,and ,,comfortable ,,pack4 #h4 ,,carry ,,your ,,own ,,water unless you know the area4 ,the water in the streams should be pure1 but the ,national ,park ,service cannot guarantee it against human pollution4 ,snow may be used1 but only a little at a time1 in order to prevent cramps4 #i4 ,,keep ,,the ,,trails ,,free ,,from ,,litter4 ,the beauty of clean1 wild places is so fragile even a bit of paper dropped can mar it4 #aj4 ,,wear ,,proper ,,clothing--hiking boots for extensive or rugged hikes1 and light but warm clothing4 ,a light jacket is recommended1 as hot summer days often cool quickly4 #aa4 ,,plan ,,your ,,hike4 ,by careful utilization of your time you will be able to see more and have a more enjoyable trip4 ,allow plenty of time4 ,usually it is more satisfying to thoroughly explore a few sections than to hurriedly try to see everything4 #ab4 ,,consider comfort items such as1 bandaids1 mosquito repellant1 sun glasses1 suntan lotion4 ,illustration3 ,mountain ,hemlock ,cones ,,the ,,trails ,no attempt is made to give a complete description of any trail1 but instead to give sufficient information to enable a prospective user to know if he is likely to find a particular one interesting4 ,before the description of each trail1 the following items are given3 ,starting point1 distance1 topography1 time1 and features4 ,many starting points are at guide marker numbers which are referred to in the ,road ,guide to ,lassen ,volcanic ,national ,park4 8,topography0 refers to the vertical rise or fall4 ,for example a 8descent of #ejj feet0 means a drop in elevation of #ejj feet4 ,as 8,time0 varies considerably among different persons2 an attempt is made to indicate the time needed for a leisurely hike4 ,a young person in good condition will require less time than indicated1 while a bird watcher1 photographer1 or naturalist might take much longer4 ,it is hoped that with these items indicated1 as well as a description of the more interesting features of each trail1 you will be able to decide which trails will offer the greatest satisfaction and enjoyment4 ,opening of the trails in the park varies from year to year according to the amount of snow during the previous winter4 ,during ,july1 ,august and ,september most of the trails are open4 ,the following tables of opening dates are for years of average snowfall1 and the actual dates will vary from two weeks earlier to two weeks later than indicated4 ,trails at lower elevations and on open slopes facing south will be available as much as a month earlier than higher trails on north slopes1 or trails through heavy forest4 ,trail crews attempt to open some trails early1 especially the ,lassen ,peak and ,bumpass ,hell trails4 ,even though snow has melted1 down trees may prevent easy hiking until trail crews can find time to work the trails4 ,,may #ae ,lily ,pond ,manzanita ,lake ,sulphur ,works ,for sheer beauty and rugged mountain scenery the ,brokeoff trail is one of the best in ,lassen4 ,from the entrance station it climbs steadily through open meadows and forest for two miles and then through the scattered hemlocks and finally above timberline to the top4 ,forest ,lake is near the trail1 and is a good objective for a leisurely nature walk4 ,a wide variety of wildflowers will be found changing with the seasons1 and the ,brewer mountainheath produces an outstanding display4 ,birds frequently seen include juncos1 chickadees1 western tanagers1 flycatchers1 and a number of others4 ,deer are common4 ,beyond ,forest ,lake the forest becomes more open4 ,at the west end of the mountain just before the last half mile of climb1 there is a good view of ,mt4 ,shasta4 ,from the top of the mountain there are good views of ,lassen ,peak1 ,conard1 ,chaos ,crags1 ,diller1 ,shasta1 and other mountains of the vicinity4 ,also1 the view of the old ,tehama caldera is excellent from this point4 ,pikas are sometimes seen among the rocks near the top1 and marmots among the rocks at lower elevations4 ,snow is likely to be found in places along the trail until about mid-,august1 and from which it can be photographed4 ,the trail descends to the crossing of ,west ,sulphur ,creek1 crosses an open hillside and follows through forested areas to the falls4 ,deer are likely to be seen as well as a variety of birds4 ,mule-ears1 also called wyethia1 is the common wildflower that covers the open hillsides4 ,many other wildflowers1 including the blue and white stickseed1 can be seen4 ,there are good views of ,brokeoff ,mountain and ,mount ,diller4 ,there are no fish in the streams near the falls nor for some distance below as there is too much sulphur from the thermal areas above4 ,farther down1 the water is diluted sufficiently for fish to live4 ,the trail continues beyond the crossing of ,east ,sulphur and ,bumpass creeks to ,kings ,creek ,campground4 7,see ,cold ,boiling and views of ,mount ,diller and ,diamond ,peak can be seen4 ,you will find good subjects for pictures1 and naturalists will find a variety of flowers 7including the striking leopard lily71 birds1 trees1 and probably deer4 ,the trail follows the ridge directly above the parking area for about a half mile1 going through red fir and white pine forests4 ,it then crosses an open hillside and finally goes over the moraine below the lakes4 ,when the water is high the two lakes are joined into one4 ,above the lakes game trails go up the side of the ,tehama rim1 which is steep and covered with loose rock4 deposited in the area giving it pastel shades of yellow1 orange1 green1 and red4 ,some of the minerals found are powdery opal1 chalcedony1 hematite1 pyrite1 kaolinite1 alunite1 and sulphur4 ,it is believed that this is part of the vent system of the ancient volcano1 ,mount ,tehama1 which collapsed thousands of years ago4 ,signs posted along the trail explain the various features4 ,this is the ,brokeoff1 ,diller1 and ,diamond peaks1 as well as the more distant ,sierra4 ,the hydrothermal area can be seen from the summit of the trail4 ,dropping into the area the trail passes by a number of hot springs1 steam vents1 mud pots and boiling pools4 ,a variety of trees and wildflowers are along the trail1 chiefly mountain hemlock and white-bark pine1 silver leaf lupine1 red penstemon1 bog kalmia and other flowers4 ,birds1 too1 are abundant1 and deer1 marmots1 and pikas may be encountered4 ,at the beginning of the trail is a box with self-guiding leaflets describing the numbered points starting slowly and resting often1 most people should be able to reach the summit and experience the thrill of being on 8top of the world04 ,the mountain ,chickadee and ,clark's nutcracker are commonly seen along the trail4 ,the gnarled mountain hemlocks and white-bark pines at timberline1 clinging tenaciously to the windswept slopes1 are truly picturesque4 ,views of distant peaks and lakes
