,many causes have conspired to hinder this branch of civilizing work at the ,mendi ,mission4 ,without stopping to specify what these may have been1 no one can doubt that the chief reason why the saw-mill at ,avery has failed to be a source of income to the ,association1 is the difficulty of transporting the lumber to market4 ,this mill1 with a circular and an upright saw1 with a good head of water during the larger part of the year1 and with timber near at hand1 is the only mill of the kind on the ,west ,coast4 ,there is a good demand for such lumber as the mill can produce1 but the chief market is #abj miles distant4 ,no one in ,africa1 however much he might want lumber1 would be guilty of going #abj miles for it1 nor even #abj rods1 if he could help it4 ,in former times the lumber was taken to the market in a large boat1 propelled by oar and sail2 but the climate and the worms have claimed that boat as their own4 ,here is a most potent agency1 an attractive centre for goods4 ,the mill might be producing thousands of feet of lumber a day1 and yet if there were no way to carry this lumber to the point where it could be sold1 its production would only become a burden4 ,what is needed to insure the best success of the mill1 and of all the industrial departments connected with it1 is an easy and quick means of transportation4 ,this would not only make the mill a really civilizing institution and a paying piece of property1 but if a small steamer or tug-boat were thus in use1 it would more than pay its own way in the regular trips it would make1 and by the incidental services it could render to other mission stations where similar industrial work is carried on4 ,there are promises enough to insure the successful running of such a steamer4 ,it should be adapted to towing a lumber boat of large capacity to and from ,freetown1 and should also be adapted to carrying passengers up and down the rivers4 ,it would accomplish more work in a given time than any other project yet proposed on this coast1 would dispense with the small army of boatmen and fleet of boats now maintained1 and would be the solution of the question in regard to the mill4 ,but why keep up this mill8 ,why have an industrial department8 ,simply because the spiritual interests of the mission are involved in it and demand it4 ,there must be a physical basis for any successful work upon the minds and hearts of the people in this part of ,africa4 ,this has been demonstrated in other missions than our own4 ,the people need a place to tie to1 and something to draw them to that place in order to receive any lasting good4 ,they need to learn habits of industry along with the ,gospel4 ,they need to be lifted out of their barbarism by increasing their wants and showing them how to supply them4 ,these are a few of the considerations that make this industrial work a sort of entering wedge for the ,gospel4 ,the situation of things at the ,avery ,station is1 however1 such as to convince those who have considered the matter1 that the keen edge of this entering wedge must be the sharp prow of a little steamer4 ,there can be scarcely a doubt1 that the facilities afforded by such a steamer would give a much needed impetus to the whole work of the ,association upon the ,west ,coast4 ,,john ,,brown ,,memorial ,,steamer4 ,here is now an opportunity to turn to account the latent forces that lie pent up within easy reach4 ,but how shall the steamer preach its practical sermon unless it be sent8 ,some one must send it4 ,many hands make light work1 especially when they contain the contributions of willing hearts4 ,why may not the many little rills1 and springs1 and even drops of love for the colored race1 flow together and float this steamer8 ,why not send1 as some one has suggested1 old ,john ,brown1 of ,harper's ,ferry1 in a memorial steamer over to ,africa1 to carry forward in a higher sense the work of freedom which he began here1 and which shall never end till his soul has ceased its marching on8 ,about #aj1jjj are needed to furnish such a steamer as is required4 ,who will take the first #ajj share in the steamer 8,john ,brown0 soon to leave for the coast of ,africa8 ,,advance ,,to ,,the ,,interior4 ,if we may believe one-half of the glowing accounts which come to us regarding the high table-lands of the interior1 one or two hundred miles back from the coast1 the region is full of rich promises as the scene of future missionary operations4 ,it is said that the land is rich1 the country wonderfully beautiful and healthy1 the population dense1 and cattle and horses abundant4 ,there are difficulties in the way of reaching this country1 but they are not insurmountable4 ,one of our missionaries 7,mr4 ,williams71 well fitted for the work1 has pushed his way back into this region1 and reports very strongly in its favor4 ,he brought back a horse with him as corroborative evidence of his statements1 and there can be no doubt that in this healthier upland region the natives are more intelligent1 more industrious1 and every way superior1 while they are also ready to welcome any who come among them for purposes of peace4 ,our present stations upon the coast1 three in number1 furnish excellent starting points and bases of supply1 and should be maintained largely as such4 ,but it should be our aim to work back from the low1 malarious coast into these healthier and more promising highlands just as soon as the proper men and the means can be found4 ,starting from the stations already established1 it would seem to be a wise thing to locate a chain of stations within easy distances of each other1 stretching back to the mountains4 ,at these points the missionaries could reside two by two1 with mutual helpfulness and support4 ,the natives of this region talk the same general language as upon the coast4 ,they are said to be remarkably fine singers1 and are fond of music4 ,they manufacture great quantities of cloth and various other articles of a superior quality4 ,they are1 however1 reported to be the husbands of many wives1 counting their honors by the number of their wives4 ,the rivers that drain this region afford an imperfect approach to the country1 but are available for considerable distances4 ,let the means and the men be found1 and this healthier and more promising country can soon be captured for ,christ4 ,it is only a question of time4 ,this push for the interior must soon be made1 and a larger and better work must soon be inaugurated4 ,,brief ,,extracts ,,from ,,the ,,journal4 ,on ,wednesday1 ,march #bc;d1 we sighted the point of ,sierra ,leone by early dawn4 ,the country as approached from the sea is beautiful4 ,the serrated ,lion ,mountains slope to the water's edge1 covered with a luxuriance of tropical vegetation4 ,the city of ,freetown at a little distance appears comparatively well built4 ,the public buildings are large and attract immediate attention1 the streets are wide and regularly laid out2 and the whole external aspect strikes one as much finer than what is naturally expected on this coast2 but a nearer view suggests the truth of the old saying that 8,familiarity breeds contempt40 ,the stay here was short1 but into the time was crowded a variety of strange and novel experiences4 ,from this point the mission boat 8,olive ,branch0 carried us to ,good ,hope ,station1 on ,sherbro ,island1 where we landed late in the evening of ,march #cjth4 ,this trip of about one hundred and twenty miles occupied three days and two nights1 and was1 perhaps1 the most trying part of our journey4 ,we experienced several severe tornadoes on the way1 and suffered from the intense glare of the sun1 now nearly vertical1 and the difficulty of procuring proper food4 ,having reached the mission house1 we at once made ourselves as much at home as possible4 ,thursday1 ,march #cast1 we were all up at an early hour1 and went out before the intense heat of the day to inspect the grounds and buildings4 ,the fine property of the mission had evidently suffered in many ways from neglect4 ,all the buildings stood in need of repairs1 and a large portion of the grounds1 including the little cemetery where ,barnabas ,root is buried1 was overgrown with bush4 ,the spiritual condition of the church and station seemed also to bear some resemblance to its outward condition4 ,it was not hopeless1 but somewhat depressed4 ,the grounds in the immediate vicinity of the mission house gave evidence1 however1 that the missionaries had neither forgotten to exercise their taste1 nor been wasteful of the small force and slender means at their command4 ,so1 also1 the spiritual condition of the station presented some encouraging features4 ,the warm reception which moist1 vegetation thick1 and the heat intense4 ,in the morning ,i preached in the mission church to an attentive audience on 8,the light that shineth in a dark place10 and was present at a service in the ,mendi language at the school-house in the afternoon4 ,the prayer meeting in the evening was well attended and full of interest4 ,on ,monday1 ,april #dth1 we went in the 8,olive ,branch0 to ,avery ,station1 on the ,mahna ,river1 a branch of the ,bargroo1 forty miles inland4 ,the trip took all of one night1 the boatmen rowing and keeping time to their oars with a weird1 monotonous singing all the way4 ,the inspection of the station at ,avery consumed the early morning hours of ,tuesday4 ,we visited the mill1 the boat houses1 the coffee farm1 the cassada fields1 the rice houses1 the boy's department1 the store1 the church and school-room1 and last1 but not least1 the 8faki10 or native village1 situated on the mission grounds1 and under the control of the missionary4 ,the situation of the mission house is a fine one1 but the adjacent country is wilder than at ,good ,hope4 ,the house stands on a high promontory1 and commands a very picturesque view both up and down the river4 ,this river abounds in fish and alligators1 while the banks are alive with monkeys4 ,i was up at three ,a4 ,m4 on the #gth to help receive ,mr4 ,kemp1 who arrived from ,good ,hope ,station at that hour4 ,later we visited the school together1 examined the pupils in their various branches1 and gave them a little talk1 which they seemed to enjoy4 ,some of them were honored by such names as ,wm4 ,e4 ,gladstone and ,m4 ,e4 ,strieby4 ,their appearance and behavior were very gratifying4 ,the prayer meeting in the evening was fully attended1 and indicated a marked degree of earnestness1 the leader ,debia1 and although a severe tornado threatened to break up the meeting1 we enjoyed an interesting and precious season together4 ,the work at this point is full of encouragement1 but greater entertained in regard to the work upon which he had but just entered with so much zeal4 ,mr4 ,kemp's earnest consecration and varied experience and sweet ,christian character had not only endeared him ,freedmen1 properly educated1 will make capital missionaries for ,africa4 ,after a careful study of the race for thirty years--fifteen on their own ancestral shores1 and now fifteen in this land of ours--such is my conclusion concerning them4 ,they have1 naturally1 some of the best traits to fit them for mission work4 ,they are hopeful1 for one thing1 as every missionary should be4 ,during all the long years of their bondage1 and then during all the war1 how did they hope on and hope ever that deliverance would come1 till come it did6 ,they are naturally a social people4 ,getting a new idea1 a new truth1 they talk it over1 pass it on1 keep it going4 ,the missionary must be social1 if he will do the most good4 ,they are a sharp-minded1 quick-witted people4 ,for ability to read character1 make a quick turn1 a good use of passing events1 or take a good illustration from nature1 the ,africans have no superiors4 ,they are of a tropical constitution1 most happy1 healthy1 and most at home in just such a climate as that of ,africa4 ,it is their native clime--a fact whose value can neither be denied nor over-estimated4 ,now keeping all these natural qualifications in mind1 let us briefly notice some pertinent points in that most unique1 varied experience and divinely appointed discipline through which ,god1 in ,his providence1 has been causing the ,freedmen to pass for all these years1 as giving them a yet more special preparation for the great mission work ,he has in store for them4 ,first1 experience in suffering4 ,i know not how it may be with others1 but for myself ,i have come1 long since1 to think that there is no discipline in this world like that of suffering1 rightly used1 to fashion us after the image of the ,divine4 ,in this way the ,saviour himself is said to have been made perfect and fitted for ,his great redemptive work1 7,heb4 v41 #h1 #i74 ,and when1 in olden time1 ,god would make choice of a people to be conservators and propagators of ,his truth in the world for ages1 how did ,he prepare them for their mission8 ,not by sending them to college1 but by sending them down into ,egypt2 and there1 for long generations1 did ,he keep them in bondage1 and then for other long years in wanderings in the wilderness1 till ,he had fitted them for ,his work1 and ground into them a character which all the fiction of the ages has not yet ground out of them4 ,so with the people of whom we speak--what an experience have they had in suffering6 ,surely1 ,god must have in store for them some great and wondrous mission1 for which ,he has intended this experience to be both presage and preparation4 ,then notice the discipline they have had as soldiers in the camp1 on the march1 on guard1 in the battle1 shoulder to shoulder with our men1 sons1 brothers1 fathers1 bravely fighting for the ,union1 that they might know what war is1 and what it sometimes costs to secure liberty and save a nation from anarchy and ruin4 ,see1 too1 what experience and discipline they are getting in civil and political life1 in the use of the ballot1 in the forming and reconstructing of states1 in the framing of constitutions1 in making and executing laws1 in all the varied and complicated duties of citizens1 magistrates1 judges and rulers1 that they may know how laws1 states and nations are made and sustained1 and so be prepared to go and plant these institutions and principles in the land of their fathers4 ,and then1 last and best of all1 what an experience are they getting in the work of organizing and running ,christian schools and pure churches among their own people1 under the lead of our teachers and preachers in the ,south1 that they may be prepared to do this same blessed work in that dark land which is so imploringly calling to them1 as her own sons and daughters1 to come with the school and the church to her help4 ,i love to look at the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association in this ,divine light4 ,i love to come up in this way upon these highlands of ,god's movements in ,africa1 and among her sons on our shores in this our day1 and to get1 as ,i think ,i can1 in this way1 some good look at the sweep and the purpose of ,his providence in the otherwise strange revolutions through which ,africa1 the ,africans1 and we ourselves are so swiftly passing4 ,and now1 what is wanting to bring this divinely planned enterprise to a speedy and glorious consummation1 but that we do all come quick and glad into line with ,god8--that the ,freedmen1 the ,american ,missionary ,association1 all its noble constituency of churches1 the whole rank and file of ,god's ,american army1 tread firm and true to the music of ,his providence8 ,so shall be generously furnished the men and the means ,he now asks1 by which to hasten1 in ,his time1 the redemption of ,africa unto ,himself4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,address ,,at ,,nashville1 ,,at ,,the ,,laying ,,of ,,the ,,corner-,,stone ,,of ,,livingstone ,,missionary ,,hall4 ,,by ,,secretary ,,strieby4 ,as we are about to lay the corner-stone of a new school building1 it is proper that ,i should answer the question1 ,why do we come down from the ,north to erect these buildings in the ,south8 ,before answering the question1 ,i may say that if we come at all1 it is not strange that we should select so beautiful a spot as this for a location2 nor that we should come to ,nashville1 for there seems to be some sort of educational lodestone that attracts schools to this city4 ,joshua conquered a ,moabite city called ,kirjath-sepher1 which scholars tell us means 8,book ,city40 ,what could have given it that title in that remote era1 whether the possession of one book or several books1 when letters had probably not long been invented1 must remain forever a mystery4 ,so when ,macaulay's ,new ,zealander1 after having meditated on the ruins of ,london ,bridge1 shall come to this spot and meditate upon the ruins here1 or when some ,layard or ,cesnola or ,schliemann shall dig down deep into their foundations1 this place may be denominated the 8,school ,city20 for at the earliest date of the settlement of ,nashville1 good schools were formed1 and now the hill-tops are crowned and the streets are adorned with schools of the highest character4 ,nor are these for the white race alone4 ,the ,methodist ,central ,tennessee ,college1 the ,baptist ,normal and ,theological ,institute1 and neither last nor least1 ,fisk ,university1 crowning these heights1 attest the interest taken in the ,christian education of the colored race4 ,but why do we come here from the ,north to build these buildings8 ,first1 we come as fellow-citizens1 who have shared in the agony of the late civil conflict1 at the bottom of which lay negro slavery1 and for which ,north and ,south were responsible1 though it may be in different degrees4 ,in the piping hot days of the anti-slavery contest1 the ,evangelical ,alliance met in ,london4 ,an ,english gentleman took the platform and delivered a scathing rebuke to ,america for slavery4 ,dr4 ,cox1 our most celebrated off-hand orator of that day1 took the floor1 saying that of course ,america had her view as to who was responsible for negro slavery in ,america1 whether ,britons or ,americans2 8but10 said he1 8,i propose to take one corner of the mantle1 and let the brother who has just spoken take the other corner1 and we will walk backwards and throw it over the originator of negro slavery in ,america40 ,we come as fellow-citizens in a like spirit1 ready to throw the mantle of charity over the past4 ,but emancipation has introduced a new element4 ,the ex-slaves need ,christian education and elevation1 and we come as ,christian brethren and say to our friends at the ,south3 ,we will take one corner of the mantle of ,christian education1 if you will take the other1 and we will go forward1 with our faces lifted to ,heaven1 and will throw that mantle over the emancipated slaves4 ,this is the work we propose to do in the ,south1 and wise and candid men both ,north and ,south are beginning to realize that the education of the negro race is the paramount duty of the nation to it4 ,presidents ,hayes and ,garfield have voiced the feelings of the ,north on this subject1 while ,col4 ,preston and ,dr4 ,ruffner of ,virginia1 ,sen4 ,brown and ,pres4 ,haygood of ,georgia1 have nobly re-echoed the sentiment from the ,south4 ,this ,association goes farther than mere intellectual education4 ,it believes that the ,christian element lies at the foundation of all true character1 and that character founded in every large ,southern ,state1 schools fitted for the training of teachers1 preachers and missionaries of the colored race4 ,at ,hampton1 where the first slave-ship entered the continent1 in the same year in which the ,pilgrims landed on ,plymouth ,rock1 the ,association opened the first ,freedman's school in these ,united ,states4 ,under the energetic administration of ,gen4 ,armstrong1 ,hampton ,institute1 with its broad lands1 its large and commodious buildings1 its steam-engine and multiplied mechanical employments1 gives educational and industrial training to its large company of students1 graduating about fifty pupils each year1 ninety per cent4 of whom go into the ,state as teachers1 carrying with them1 into the school1 the ,sunday-school1 the prayer-meeting and the church a healthful ,christian influence2 while the noble old state of ,virginia responds to the effort by a gift of #aj1jjj a year for the support of the school4 ,atlanta ,university1 with its two commodious buildings1 and another soon to be added1 imparts a higher range of teaching1 including classic instruction to its pupils1 and the state of ,georgia responds with its gift of #h1jjj a year4 ,if you would see what is done at ,fisk ,university1 look around you and examine the classes under instruction in ,jubilee ,hall4 ,but time would fail me to speak of ,talladega1 ,ala42 ,tougaloo1 ,miss42 ,straight ,university1 ,new ,orleans2 ,tillotson ,institute1 ,austin1 ,texas2 and of the other schools1 normal1 grammar and primary1 which the ,association sustains4 ,from all these institutions we believe there are pupils now engaged in teaching1 who have under their care #bjj1jjj children1 and that there are pastors in churches that we have founded1 and in others not under our care1 whom we have prepared to be intelligent and faithful preachers of the ,gospel in this land and in ,africa4 ,we believe that the providence of ,god is bringing to pass a wonderful combination of discovery in ,africa and of ,christian education among the ,freedmen1 that is to have an immeasurable influence on the long neglected races of the ,dark ,continent4 ,in these efforts for the colored people1 we do not wish to make them vain nor to pauperize them4 ,we believe our efforts have led thus far to neither of these results4 ,the scholars going from our schools are not troubled with what is so aptly called the 8big head10 and my observation shows that around our schools and others like them the colored people are inclined more than anywhere else to buy land1 build houses and make comfortable ,christian homes4 ,our purpose in erecting these buildings1 in addition to the good that is done to the scholars under immediate instruction1 is to inspire hope in the whole race4 ,and we are doing it4 ,a good colored deacon in one of our churches said that he expected no greater change to come over him when he entered ,heaven than came over his race when the doors of the school-house were opened to it4 ,in the prosecution of this1 our great work1 we have spent over #c1jjj1jjj1 and to secure that sum we have had providential helpers4 ,first on the roll and steadiest in the ranks are the ,christian friends at the ,north and in ,great ,britain1 whose firm support has been the stability of our efforts4 ,we mention also the ,freedmen's ,bureau1 with its large and wise distribution of ,government funds for educational purposes4 ,this ,bureau has not been popular at the ,south2 but we believe the time will yet come when our ,southern friends will learn to appreciate the work of ,gen4 ,howard1 the head of this ,bureau1 and of ,gen4 ,fisk1 who administered so wisely and impartially for both races the ,bureau work in this and adjoining ,states4 ,the ,jubilee ,singers need no will be struck with the simple straightforward way in which our scholars express themselves1 with the extremely limited amount of what is sometimes called 8gush10 and with the clear revelation which will be made to him that before1 behind1 around1 and underneath everything else1 the development of a thoroughly ,christian character1 and of a true manhood and womanhood1 is the all-absorbing purpose of our work4 ,but ,i am stultifying myself in trying to convey an impression of these gatherings to others4 ,even to our own corps of workers here1 they come1 twice a year1 almost as a surprise and as a most inspiring revelation to ourselves of what ,god is permitting us to do4 ,and still1 however inadequate1 our anniversary exercises have been full of interest1 and have revealed much to those who have visited us for the first time4 ,the ,baccalaureate sermon was preached ,june #abth1 by our college pastor1 ,rev4 ,cyrus ,w4 ,francis1 from #ast ,tim4 i4 #ai1 8,holding faith and a good conscience20 and it was an earnest plea for the supremacy of the higher motives in the ,christian warfare upon which the graduates were about to enter4 ,three days of public examinations followed1 each day's session being concluded by an exercise in music and light gymnastics4 ,on the last day there was a display of what our girls have learned in the way of head-making4 ,the walls of the front hall and one of the stairways were covered with specimens of the students' drawing and map-making1 indicating great progress in this department during the year4 ,the normal work also has been making a decided advance4 ,it is evident that those of us who teach the ,greek1 ,latin and other higher branches will have to look well to our laurels4 ,fewer visitors to the school ask to hear the classics translated2 more wish to see how the three ,r's are taught4 ,no exercise of the examination days riveted the attention of our friends more firmly than the exercise in teaching one of the grammar-school grades1 by one of the members of the senior normal class1 with following criticisms from the other members of the class4 ,however1 we classical instructors rejoice in all this1 for we know that hereafter we shall have better equipped pupils for grappling with ,xenophon and ,cicero4 ,it ought to be mentioned here that one of the most valuable exercises of our winter term this year was a three days' ,teachers' ,institute1 in which all the teachers and scholars participated1 and in which much light was thrown upon the improved methods of teaching1 now attracting such wide attention4 ,a further impetus was given to thought and effort in this direction by the visit of our friend1 the ,rev4 ,a4 ,d4 ,mayo1 co-editor of the ,journal of ,education1 whose four lectures and one sermon before our students1 and whose private talk and counsel with our teachers on certain phases of our work1 will not soon be forgotten4 ,a very large audience1 as usual1 packed the ,friendship ,baptist church on ,thursday1 to listen to the essays of eleven of the graduating class1 and to the address of the invited orator of the day4 ,five young men and twelve young women received the diplomas of the school4 ,the ,commencement address was delivered by ,rev4 ,atticus ,g4 ,haygood1 ,d4,d41 ,president of ,emory ,college at ,oxford1 in this ,state4 ,those who are now reading his recently published book1 8,our ,brother in ,black10 will not need to be told that his address was listened to with the greatest pleasure and approval by all who were present4 ,it was a plain1 forcible and thoroughly wholesome presentation of some of the ways in which the true greatness of the ,state must be secured1 and the relation thereto of education and of such institutions as ours4 ,dr4 ,haygood represents1 most nobly1 that rapidly multiplying element among the ,southern people which believes in the motto1 8,look up and not down1 out and not in1 forward and not backward1 and lend a hand40 ,may his tribe increase4 ,one of the most excellent features of the address was1 as one auditor suggested1 the fact that it would have been just as appropriate for delivery before the ,athens 7,state7 ,university as before the ,atlanta ,university4 ,the ,alumni meeting1 ,thursday afternoon1 brought together a goodly number of the graduates of former years4 ,the spirit of the remarks made at this gathering gives1 every year1 an increasing assurance of the stability and self-propagating character of the work in which we are engaged4 ,the report of the ,visiting ,committee1 appointed by the ,governor of the ,state1 has just been published4 ,it furnishes renewed evidence of the growing favor which our work is meeting with among the people of ,georgia4 ,the remarks made to the school on the last day of the examinations1 by ,rev4 ,mr4 ,wilkes1 the chairman of the sub-committee1 who prepared this report1 were full of good sense and kindly feeling4 ,the speaker told of his life-long service as a teacher1 and how it had begun with the instruction of a little colored boy1 his father's slave1 in the safe seclusion of the corn-crib1 in the days when such teaching was a criminal offense4 ,none who heard him could doubt the entire sincerity of his words of sympathy and encouragement4 ,it is astonishing how rapidly and widely the work of ,atlanta ,university is coming to be appreciated4 ,among the applications for teachers which have lately been received1 have been several from county school commissioners1 who say1 in substance1 8,the teachers we have met with from your ,institution are of such a quality that we desire now to supply all our schools from the same source40 ,let our friends at the ,north take courage4 ,their investments1 so far1 are bearing compound interest at a high rate4 ,when these lines reach the eyes of the readers of the ,,missionary1 some ten thousand children1 all over this great ,state1 will be gathered under the instruction of our many classes through their graduating exercises at ,atlanta1 it has been very pleasant for me1 this year1 to witness the closing exercises of two similar ,institutions4 ,this one at ,talladega ,i have been urged to report for the ,,missionary4 ,the sermon before the graduating class was preached by ,pres4 ,h4 ,s4 ,de ,forest upon the worth of the soul4 ,his eloquent review of the grand geologic ages told of the greater grandeur of ,him for whom they were prepared4 ,his allusions to the soul's capacity to think1 feel and choose1 to its immortality and cost of redemption1 must have brought to the class an overwhelming sense of their responsibility4 ,in closing1 they were asked to remember that what a man may be is infinitely more than what he can sell himself to get4 ,the ,missionary ,society had the promise of an address on ,sunday evening by ,dr4 ,g4 ,b4 ,willcox1 of ,chicago ,theological ,seminary4 ,a telegram announcing his sickness was throwing its shadow over us1 when1 as unexpectedly1 ,rev4 ,h4 ,m4 ,ladd dropped in upon us1 only a few days home from ,africa4 ,he hastened ,south to catch the last days of ,talladega and ,atlanta sessions1 hoping to find recruits for ,african missions4 ,on ,monday the examinations began4 ,this ,institution is fortunate in having an excellent primary school in the building4 ,it is a constant object lesson to the little army of teachers who go out every summer to teach just such children1 and also dignifies primary work1 which1 in spite of ,frbel1 ,pestalozzi and the truly wise and good everywhere1 is too often considered of minor importance4 ,the principal of the intermediate department has remarkable ability in bringing her pupils up to her high standard of excellence4 ,in the rear of her school-room is a power for good which is inestimable4 ,it consists in a long1 low table with seats4 ,on it are fastened1 by a very simple contrivance1 interesting and instructive illustrated papers and magazines1 which the children are allowed to read after lessons are prepared4 ,in an age when the best literature floods our land in such cheap forms that the humblest need never thirst1 what nobler philanthropy than to allure these often worse than homeless children on to an early taste for good reading8 ,the normal work and classes in natural science are in charge of a graduate lately from ,beloit ,college and ,whitewater ,normal ,school4 ,the classical department is in charge of an ,olivet graduate1 whose three years here have proved him invaluable4 ,a most interesting acquisition to the corps of teachers is a scientific farmer1 a graduate of ,massachusetts ,agricultural ,college4 ,to enjoy the delicious vegetables from his garden is enough to convert a sceptic in scientific agriculture4 ,it really looks as though1 under his skill1 these unsightly acres of red clay were1 in time1 to blossom as the rose4 ,the joy and pride of this ,institution1 however1 is its theological department1 and well it may be4 ,its class of eleven were examined two hours of one of their hot days1 and nobody seemed weary4 ,the clear1 simple topics1 recited in such an interesting1 lucid style1 tolerated no hovering fog1 that ,i had supposed always1 more or less1 mystified a recitation in systematic theology4 ,the accuracy of their knowledge in ,bible history1 too1 was wonderful4 ,none but a born teacher could have secured such results from a class of that grade of scholarship4 ,classes in geometry and rhetoric told unmistakably of thorough work4 ,we were entertained1 ,monday evening1 by prize speaking and essay reading2 ,tuesday evening1 by an interesting account of ,mr4 ,ladd's ,african experience1 in place of the expected address by ,dr4 ,willcox2 ,wednesday evening1 by the ordination of two candidates2 ,thursday evening1 by a musical concert4 ,there are a few rare voices here that vocal training would develop into marvellous sweetness4 ,thursday was graduating day1 and as the class was much smaller than usual1 five young men from the preparatory department gave orations4 ,they were all excellent in matter and delivery4 ,their effect would have been more pleasing1 however1 had there been a greater variety of subjects or of treatment4 ,doubtless1 in the depths of these students' hearts1 no subjects are so momentous as 8,the curse of ,canaan20 8,cannot we1 too1 become great men80 8,the ballot10 etc4 ,but what has pleased me here more than anything else1 however1 is the excellent spirit manifested by the students in the family4 ,there is1 especially among the young men1 an earnestness of purpose shown that is simply grand4 ,possibly it is1 in part1 owing to the fact that so many are from the country1 schooled by hard work1 away from the follies of city life4 ,there is here no airing of exquisite broadcloth nor swinging of fancy canes4 ,all are respectful1 unassuming1 and possessed of a modesty that seems to reach beneath their delightful demeanor and give them a true estimate of their abilities4 ,at family devotions1 the last morning before the school separated1 one of the graduates led us in prayer4 ,i cannot think that the thought and tones of that prayer will ever leave me4 ,the ear of the ,omnipotent must have heard those pathetic pleadings that his fellow-students might be sustained by the ,everlasting ,arms as they took up their heavy burdens1 often in the midst of terrible temptations4 ,we who send out these large numbers of young men and women to reach the masses1 feel the need of your prayers and sympathies2 but how much more do these young and inexperienced ones1 as they go out to battle with ignorance1 envy1 intemperance and every form of vice6 ,we never realize how great our hopes are for them till we occasionally get a great shock by the death of one1 or the overcoming and fall of another4 ,we reach but a few4 ,surely our work and the entire ,southern work of the ,american ,missionary ,association centres in those who go out to reach the millions4 ,if they fail1 we have failed4 ,how important that we hold up such a high standard of character1 that they shall be beacon lights instead of tapers that shall soon go out in the darkness4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tillotson ,,institute1 ,,austin1 ,,texas4 7,from the ,daily ,statesman7 ,tillotson ,institute is presided over by the ,rev4 ,w4 ,e4 ,brooks1 a gentleman of evident ,christian piety1 an accomplished scholar1 and a man thoroughly impressed with the dignity and importance of his trust4 ,professor ,brooks is ably assisted in the educational part of his work by ,miss ,hunt1 an experienced and successful teacher of the young1 as her class examinations1 conducted at the ,institute on the #ith inst41 fully demonstrated2 the boys and girls1 in the careful and prolonged examinations to which they were subjected by their teachers and the visitors present1 displaying an accuracy of information and a fullness of understanding highly commendable to themselves1 and a just source of pride to their faithful and efficient teachers4 ,the examination in ,english grammar1 including analysis and parsing1 was excellent1 as was that also in geography4 ,the result of the examination in arithmetic1 algebra and ,latin showed an uncommon proficiency on the part of the students1 considering the fact that they have been at this school and under this training scarcely more than six months4 ,president ,brooks has the real welfare of his pupils at heart1 and is educating them in a practical as well as theoretical way4 ,he is teaching them how to become useful and honorable men and women1 and his labors have the cordial approval of all our best citizens4 ,president ,brooks is so much gratified with his success thus far that he visits the ,north shortly1 hoping to get further aid in establishing this school1 and proposes1 if his expectations are realized1 to add a mechanical and agricultural department to his present course of instruction4 ,the school closed with an attendance of one hundred and seven pupils4 ,this under-taking is a very praiseworthy one1 and will1 we doubt not1 meet with the encouragement it most certainly deserves4 ,in ,virginia1 ,tennessee and ,louisiana these schools for the colored youth are attracting the attention and securing the liberal approval of the legislatures and public men of those states1 and so it will be here4 ,we noticed among the many visitors present at the examination1 ,gov4 ,pease1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,wright1 ,judge ,fulmore1 ,mr4 ,a4 ,p4 ,wooldridge1 ,profs4 ,winn and ,johnson1 all of whom expressed themselves highly gratified with the success of the school4 ,we recommend to our people who take an interest in education to visit this ,institution4 ,they can be assured of a polite and hospitable much more to encourage them to rise1 than those had who have already struggled up4 ,the visitors were1 of course1 friends of the school and of the scholars1 and they said many kind and appreciative things about the school and the recitations they heard4 ,we tried to make the examinations strictly honest4 ,every scholar was given a chance1 as far as possible1 to show what he had done in every study he had pursued2 and to take the words of those who visited the different classes1 the result was satisfactory4 ,wednesday was 8children's day10 when the little ones in the lower rooms gave the entertainment1 and the older scholars attended as guests1 with other friends of the small entertainers4 ,the affair was very child-like and pretty4 ,the recitations and dialogues were such as the children could appreciate2 the songs bright1 airy little things2 and the singing a half-shy dainty rippling of very sweet music4 ,through all there was no appearance of the 8,now-all-are-looking-at-me0 feeling that sometimes makes children's exhibitions such pitiful things4 ,on ,thursday was the ,anniversary4 ,the course of study having been extended one year1 there was no graduating class4 ,the exercises consisted of essays by members of the upper classes1 the recitation of a few poems1 one or two dialogues1 and music4 ,the music was very good1 the dialogues natural1 the recitations well chosen and well spoken1 that entitled 8,mona's ,water0 being very strongly rendered2 but the most interesting part of this entertainment was the essays4 ,three prizes had been offered1 and three gentlemen of the city acted as judges1 to decide on the merits of the different essays4 ,all were called good1 and with reason4 ,those of the youngest class in essay writing were delightfully child-like1 natural and original4 ,that on 8,intemperance10 to which the prize was awarded1 had besides a strong-hearted earnestness and depth of thought that were surprising4 ,the essays of the middle class showed more mature thought1 or1 perhaps1 a reaching out towards mature thought--a calm looking forward and trying to prepare for earnest living4 ,the prize in this class came to the essay entitled1 8,we ,learn not for ,school1 but for ,life40 ,the essays of the upper class seemed to have for a key-note a sentiment we always find among the best of our people here1 when we get at their hearts and hopes and aspirations--the elevation of their race4 ,do not think there was any sameness in these essays4 ,each reached this thought in a different way4 ,it gleamed out in 8,everything was ,made to be ,happy20 it made itself felt as one of the foundations of 8,progress20 and it formed the crown of the prize essay1 8,nothing ,great is ,lightly ,won10 when1 after brave words calling to action1 it closed with the quotation from ,longfellow's 8,psalm of ,life30 8,lives of great men all remind us1 ,we may make our lives sublime10 etc41 leaving one with the thought that helping others is the best and greatest work here1 and that our lives must be right towards ,god if we would really help4 ,in the evening of this same day the ,normal exhibition was held4 ,every part 7about fifteen of them7 had left previously to teach country schools2 but the classes which were examined acquitted themselves remarkably well4 ,the questioning by the teachers threw them upon their own resources1 and proved the excellent instruction they have had4 ,the noticeable quickness and readiness of answer1 and the mastery of each branch of study1 showed that they have been trained to think for themselves1 and not merely to learn by rote4 ,in reading1 geography1 history1 grammar1 composition1 arithmetic1 algebra1 natural philosophy1 and other branches1 the scholars showed very commendable proficiency1 and again answered the often-answered question1 8,can the negro learn80 ,one thing highly commended by all the visitors1 and an important feature of the instruction1 was the constant use of writing4 ,the scholars spell out their lessons by writing on slate or black-board4 ,they frequently prepare written compositions or reviews of lessons in grammar and geography1 and in many ways are taught to express in written characters the thoughts drawn from their studies4 ,thus the facts are firmly fixed in mind1 and they learn also by the same process to write1 spell1 capitalize1 punctuate and compose4 ,some of the exercises written as ordinary lessons displayed handsome penmanship4 ,several leading white citizens attended the exercises1 and expressed themselves as being much pleased4 ,among them were ,professor ,williams1 principal of the ,state ,asylum for the ,blind1 located here1 a firm friend of negro education2 and ,professor ,link1 a professional teacher of many years' experience1 who said1 significantly1 in private3 8,i attend all the white schools1 and ,i don't see any difference0--which is quite an admission for a native ,southerner4 ,there was also ,rev4 ,j4 ,w4 ,burke1 a leading ,methodist ,episcopal clergyman1 publisher and assistant editor of the ,wesleyan ,christian ,advocate1 well known as an excellent ,christian man and a true friend of the negro4 ,all the visitors showed decided interest and pleasure4 ,a violent rain-storm arising in the afternoon doubtless kept away many who would have attended4 ,the literary exercises were held in the church at #d p4 m41 ,june #ast1 in the presence of a large and attentive audience4 ,the school1 marching in to organ music1 were massed together upon the pulpit platform1 one tier above another1 making a very striking and memorable group4 ,as ,i looked into the bright eyes and smiling faces of all shades of color1 from jet black to almost pure white1 and noted the neat1 tasty dress1 and the beaming of intelligence from the animated features1 and remembered the thoroughness of the examination they had passed1 ,i looked back to another scene1 sixteen years ago1 when1 as a soldier in ,general ,wilson's cavalry1 we took possession of this city1 and heard the rumors of peace confirmed1 just at the end of the long and bloody war4 ,that was my first sight of the negroes of ,macon4 ,then they were uncouth1 ragged1 ignorant and untrained2 but now what a change6 ,i thanked ,god and took courage4 ,as the school stood in this grouped position1 they sang beautifully the song 8,our ,motto10 in which the chorus of each verse was 8,be faithful1 firm and true40 ,then repeating together the ,twenty-third ,psalm1 and chanting the ,lord's ,prayer1 they took their seats in the body of the church1 and the literary programme went on4 ,the reading of selections and compositions1 the declamations and music1 were all well rendered4 ,the singing was especially deserving of notice1 as1 on account of the severe illness of ,miss ,raynor1 the music teacher1 the scholars were deprived of their accustomed organ accompaniment and musical leadership4 ,but they had been well trained1 and acquitted themselves with much credit to their teacher and themselves4 ,a song entitled 8,the ,farmer's ,boy10 with a whistling chorus1 was especially well sung and whistled4 ,the senior class sang a
