,,anniversary ,,reports4 ,we devote an unusual amount of space in this number to reports of the closing exercises of ten of our educational institutions at the ,south4 ,next month we purpose to add reports of others whose anniversaries occur too late for mention at this writing4 ,it will be seen that the year has been an unusually prosperous one4 ,the number of students1 either of advanced grade or seeking for a higher education1 has been larger1 perhaps1 than during any previous year4 ,we note especially the large number of boarding students1 and also the fact that the accommodations for them are by far too limited in many of our schools4 ,the growing disposition of our students to continue their studies through as many months of the year as possible is a fact of much significance4 ,it will be remembered that our missions have been richly blessed by outpourings of the ,holy ,spirit1 and that a goodly number--sometimes whole classes--have indulged the hopes of a new life4 ,most of these will go forth to teach during the summer1 and the rich experiences through which they have passed will prove of great value to them in their work4 ,we know of no class of people needing the prayers of our patrons more than these4 ,perhaps the influence of our institutions upon the leading minds of the ,south1 and especially upon those interested in popular education1 was never so great4 ,governors of ,southern ,states1 mayors of cities1 presidents of colleges1 representatives of the pulpit1 the bar and the press1 attend our anniversary exercises1 and enter heartily and with appreciation into the spirit of the work4 ,we believe any one who will read the reports referred to will find much occasion for thanking ,god and taking courage4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the reports of the exercises at ,hampton1 ,va41 and ,fisk ,university1 ,nashville1 ,tenn41 were written by ,virginians1 and give a good idea of the drift of thought concerning our institutions among the better class of ,southern people4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,brief ,,view ,,of ,,the ,,situation4 ,the gift of ,mrs4 ,stone of #aej1jjj for new buildings at ,fisk1 ,atlanta1 ,talladega1 and ,new ,orleans2 the new educational institution at ,austin1 ,texas1 and our new churches organized the past year at the ,south1 make additional demands upon our treasury4 ,the churches should not be left to a feeble struggle for life1 but be aided to a vigorous growth4 ,the additional facilities at the schools mentioned1 and the new institution in ,texas1 mean an increased number of students to be aided1 and increased expense for teachers1 for insurance1 repairs and other incidentals4 ,our work among the ,chinese in ,california calls urgently for enlargement2 in fact1 the continued existence of such a work means continued growth with increased expenditures4 ,a great pressure has been brought to bear upon us to do more for the education of ,indian youth2 but the work cannot be done without money4 ,the success1 however1 at ,carlisle and ,hampton indicates clearly the hopefulness of doing much more4 ,mr4 ,arthington1 of ,leeds1 ,england1 has paid over #c1jjj1 and ,british ,christians have given a like amount1 for a new mission on the ,upper ,nile1 in ,east ,central ,africa2 but the opening of the ,arthington ,mission will require #aj1jjj annually for its support4 ,it will be seen by these statements that the entrance to our different fields of labor has been thrown open more widely4 ,we must settle the question as to whether we shall enter2 but to enter means continued and efficient occupancy4 8,occupy till ,i come0 is the command of the ,great ,teacher4 ,the gate is not open to a haven of rest1 but to a field of labor1 and additional labor calls for additional expense4 ,nothing short of an increase of #be per cent4 of the income of the ,association will be adequate to meet the increased demands4 ,the pastors and officers of the churches are our most effectual helpers in raising the amount required4 ,will they not come to our relief right early8 ,the people will give of their means if the work and its wants are properly presented to them2 and if ,god has set before us these open doors1 surely ,he will add ,his blessing as we enter4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,intemperance ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,one of the 8decisive battles0 to be fought by and in behalf of the colored people of the ,south is on the field of intemperance4 ,slavery made this vice impossible4 ,emancipation1 with all its manifold blessings1 opened the gates to its entrance1 and these once opened1 it now pours in like a flood4 ,the cannonading has already begun in some of the ,southern ,states in regard to prohibition1 local option and other legal safeguards2 but in this1 as in other battles1 small arms and the hand-to-hand fight must win the victory4 ,man by man1 must the victims of this vice be warned and rescued1 and especially must the young1 individual by individual1 be instructed1 warned1 pledged to personal abstinence1 and enlisted in the work of saving others4 ,the schools of the ,american ,missionary ,association are the very citadels of drill and equipment in this warfare4 ,their students must be the vanguard in the onset1 and the 8old guard0 that 8never surrenders0 in the hottest fight4 ,we rejoice to know that our schools and their students are alert and active in their duties in this respect4 ,temperance literature and the prayers of ,god's people are invoked in their behalf4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,last ,,man4 ,,rev4 ,c4 ,p4 ,,osborne4 ,the first man is named by sacred history4 ,scientific prophecy ventures to tell us who the last man is to be4 ,prof4 ,alphonse de ,candolle1 son and successor of the great naturalist1 wrote1 a few years since1 some interesting speculations on the probable future of the human race4 ,this paper was deemed of sufficient value to be republished in the ,annual ,report of the ,smithsonian ,institution at ,washington1 for the year #ahge4 ,in the course of his discussion the eminent writer shows reason for believing that the last man is to be1 not one man1 but three4 ,the future history of mankind1 leaving out of the account any possible catastrophe that might suddenly extinguish the race1 will be1 in his view1 somewhat as follows4 ,for an extended period the population of the globe1 favored by improved methods of agriculture1 by migration to unoccupied lands1 by general prevalence of peace consequent upon higher morality1 will increase until the world is stocked with inhabitants to its fullest capacity4 ,then1 after a period1 will begin a process of depopulation4 ,the conditions of life in the colder regions will be greatly changed by growing scarcity of the fuel supply2 the world's stock of minerals will be gradually exhausted by rust and wear1 which will bring an end of ships1 railroads and commerce1 and thus increase the difficulty of maintaining life2 and the incessant action of water1 ice and air will constantly diminish the land area of the globe1 until only mountains will remain as islands above the surface of the sea4 ,under the combined action of these agencies1 the principles of natural selection and survival of the fittest will come into play with decisive effect1 and in the struggle for life the weaker races will one by one succumb and disappear4 ,three races1 however1 exhibit qualities which fit them to survive beyond all others4 #a4 ,the white race1 as represented by ,europeans and their ,american descendants1 thanks to their intelligence and habitual bravery1 skill1 and the confidence they can place in each other1 will sustain the struggle4 #b4 ,the negroes also will prevail1 on account of their physical vigor1 power to resist malaria and to flourish in tropical regions1 where the white race rapidly deteriorates4 #c4 ,the yellow race1 represented principally by the ,chinese1 will maintain their place1 since they have great vigor of stock1 a capacity to exist on small resources1 and alone seem sufficiently intelligent and robust to struggle in all latitudes with both the other races4 ,the last man1 then1 is to be a white man1 a negro and a ,chinaman4 ,but de ,candolle seems to think that the negro may1 after all1 be the last man of this triumvirate4 ,for the white man1 occupying scattered islands in the colder regions1 and deprived of fuel1 might be exterminated by the more or less periodical invasions of ice from polar regions1 while the black man could continue to subsist with little effort on the pulp of tropical melons4 ,such is a brief outline of the curious speculations of this eminent savant4 ,of their value as science or prophecy1 of their correspondence with ,biblical views of the future of human history1 let the reader make his own judgment4 ,the writer simply asks attention to a few obvious suggestions4 #a4 ,it is a very significant fact that a man of recognized eminence as a scientist should1 in a glance at the probable future of mankind1 give so important a place to the despised ,african4 ,it is a fact that more than justifies all the deep interest of the ,christian and the philanthropist in that unfortunate race4 ,christians are not in any danger of giving undue attention to the claims of the negro upon their prayers and benefactions4 #b4 ,the conclusions of science1 that the ,african race is fitted to persist among the latest inhabitants of the earth1 are confirmed by the evidence of facts4 ,the census of #ahhj produced two genuine surprises4 ,first1 the fact that the largest relative increase of population in the ,united ,states during the last decade was in the former slave ,states4 ,second1 that this result was due to the fact that while the increase of the whites of those ,states was some two per cent4 below the average for the whole country1 the increase of the blacks was more than three per cent4 above that average4 ,it is thus demonstrated that negroes are not to be numbered with those races which1 like ,australians1 ,hawaiians and ,american ,indians1 fade away and disappear in the presence of more civilized races4 ,the negro in warm latitudes has shown his ability1 with less than a fair chance1 to hold more than his own with the white man4 ,we may no longer hope that the grave problems1 social1 political and religious1 connected with his residence in our land1 are to be solved by the gradual extinction of the race4 ,the black man will not die2 he must be instructed and evangelized4 #c4 ,if we are to have black men and yellow men for our neighbors to the end of time1 it is for our interest to be on good terms with them4 ,as a matter of policy it will be best for us to do all we can to make them comfortable--,i may even say1 companionable neighbors4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,boston ,,anniversary4 ,it will be remembered by our readers that during the last week in ,may the six co-operative ,societies sustained largely by the ,congregationalists1 hold anniversary meetings in ,boston4 ,this year the meetings were held on ,wednesday1 the #beth4 ,the day was bright and breezy1 and the congregations throughout were larger than usual4 ,the meeting of the ,american ,missionary ,association closed the morning session4 ,a report was made by ,secretary ,woodworth1 reviewing1 in brief1 the several branches of the work carried on by the ,association during the past nineteen years4 ,mr4 ,woodworth's address was replete with facts and statistics1 giving a comprehensive view of the importance1 success and necessities of the ,association4 ,rev4 ,j4 ,f4 ,lovering1 of ,worcester1 was the first speaker4 ,during his address he mentioned the fact that a negro family of his acquaintance1 in ,massachusetts1 found it difficult to rent a house on account of their color1 and argued that if there be such prejudices still at the ,north1 we ought not to be surprised if they yet exist at the ,south4 ,he related several instances coming under his observation during the war1 showing the religious nature of the colored people and their love for knowledge1 closing his address with a graphic description of a company of colored women and children singing songs of thanksgiving to troops returning from the war4 ,hon4 ,j4 ,j4 ,h4 ,gregory1 of ,marblehead1 was the next speaker4 ,he urged the work of saving the ,freedmen as a duty upon us from a common-sense and statesmanlike view1 as well as from a religious consideration4 ,he said3 8,they will never vote safely until they vote intelligently4 ,they will always be at the mercy of others until they can think for themselves4 ,they are not like the ,mexicans1 who have not changed for a century1 but they are eager for knowledge1 plastic1 and have already made astonishing advances4 ,they spend their money freely1 and if educated will like their homes tasteful and attractive4 ,in so low a view as the commercial one1 we should be deeply interested for these people4 ,there are only about twenty-five colored lawyers and a hundred doctors among them4 ,in the time of the yellow fever1 one of the latter remained through it all and cared for the people4 ,when his work was over1 a large company of white citizens gratefully followed him to the depot with a band of music1 showing that color is forgotten when there is ability and power40 ,mr4 ,gregory is now building a mission home and remodeling the school-house at ,wilmington1 ,n4,c41 at an expense of about #h1jjj4 ,these buildings are in close proximity to the new church edifice also built by him1 an account of which was given in the from the ,normal ,department4 ,the excellency of her work is not found alone in the perfection of drill which every exercise shows1 but in the exquisite finish of whatever work is done4 ,a recent graduate from ,williston ,seminary and of the ,sheffield ,scientific ,school1 with whom ,i visited this school one day when it was not on exhibition1 and examined the children's work in map drawing1 declared that he had never seen any work of the kind that compared with it4 ,the exhibition given by these children made it easier to understand the uniformly excellent work apparent in all the before them1 after sixteen years of wanderings4 ,a rainy evening gave a much smaller audience to hear ,dr4 ,g4 ,d4 ,pike's missionary sermon than would otherwise have greeted him4 ,he must be a laggard indeed who1 hearing the ,doctor on his favorite theme of missions1 does not become inoculated with something of his divine enthusiasm4 ,space cannot be given for even a full programme of the ,society and the ,college ,preparatory ,class2 and it would be exceedingly common-place to say1 what simple truth demands should be said1 that they were all excellent4 ,one of the visitors said at the close of the ,normal ,school exhibition on ,monday1 that he did not expect to hear anything better even from the graduating class2 but on ,thursday candidly admitted his mistake1 as there was just such advance as there ought to have been to mark the advanced grade of the pupils4 ,perhaps1 instead of giving a programme of these exercises1 it will prove more profitable to state impressions derived from them4 ,this was the first time the writer has had the privilege of attending the closing exercises of this or of any school for the education of these people4 ,brought up among them1 and always accustomed to regard them as inferior1 he shared until recently the feeling so prevalent that in their education nothing more should be attempted than a fair common school training4 ,this is not the place in which to argue that there is urgent need that the leaders of #g1jjj1jjj people1 who are to be redeemed from ignorance and lifted into a plane where they shall command the respect of those who are now unjustly prejudiced against them1 shall be thoroughly disciplined and broadly educated2 but it is the time to express the opinion of the writer1 and of several others who attended with great interest these exercises1 with something of his prejudices1 that these students showed conclusively that they are capable of taking on the same culture1 and under it of reaching the same excellencies of thought and discipline1 as the more favored whites attain under like training2 and that an objection to their higher education must be based on other ground than their inability to receive it1 or the need of their race for such leaders as this school is sending out from year to year4 ,a gentleman1 native of ,tennessee1 who has recently been called from the presidency of a ,southern ,college to the management of the educational work of the ,state1 was present during the commencement exercises1 and contrasted them with those of the graduating class of the first institution of the ,state for whites1 in terms so complimentary to the negro students1 that1 out of deference to the whites1 his language will be omitted4 ,this work is no longer tentative4 ,both the possibility and value of it have been fully demonstrated1 and the urgent demand is that the ,university shall be fully equipped for it4 ,the point has been reached1 in the estimation of all who know anything of its history1 needs and opportunities1 when it must be enlarged or suffer irreparably4 ,it was1 therefore1 with gladness of heart that a large number of its friends1 white and black1 from the city and from other ,states1 gathered to lay the corner-stone of ,livingstone ,missionary ,hall on ,wednesday afternoon4 ,gen4 ,fisk presided most felicitously1 and the address of ,dr4 ,strieby was in every way happy and inspiring4 ,it was a regular love feast1 not simply because there was so much of the ,methodist element in it1 as represented by the ,general and his excellent lady1 and ,dr4 ,mc,ferrin--8a rebel who fought on the last ten acres left for the rebellion to stand upon10 and who overcame great obstacles to get out to the exercises1 despite attractions in other directions1 and made a delightful speech1 full of good feeling--but because there was such a flowing together of hearts and good-will from all classes as represented on the occasion4 ,dr4 ,strieby should be requested to print his speech in full and distribute it all over the land1 and with it should go the eight or ten other excellent shorter speeches which followed1 one of which was by the city's treasurer1 who came to represent the ,historical ,society4 ,there was a poem written for the occasion by ,prof4 ,spence1 and read by one of the pupils1 ,miss ,allen1 who has remarkable powers as a reader4 ,the address from ,rev4 ,c4 ,h4 ,daniels1 of ,cincinnati1 which followed the graduating addresses of the class1 was able and timely4 ,his theme was 8,the dignity and value of the individual man40 ,it was every way a manful presentation of a manly subject1 and was a fitting finale to the very able and manly addresses of the graduating class4 ,the diplomas were presented by ,gen4 ,fisk in a brief address full of pathos and good sense1 with happy allusions in each case to the theme of the recipient's address4 ,after this came the ,alumni dinner1 plain and substantial1 and the speeches following1 which were fully up to those of older and more pretentious societies4 ,and thus closed the fullest and most hopeful year in the history of this institution1 which is beginning to excite the deepest interest among the people of the ,state1 who are awakening to the fact that it is offering the only solution to many dark problems which to them seemed without an answer1 or at least one that had anything of hope in it4 ,we cannot better close this article than by giving the following extract from an editorial from the ,american1 the ablest and most influential paper of the ,state3 8,in the proceedings at the ,fisk ,university1 yesterday1 another step forward was taken in the way of providing material means for that moral and intellectual growth which is going on silently as a great institution grows and roots itself firmly in the society around it4 ,universities are not created in a day1 nor at all by money1 although money is a necessary agency4 ,they grow4 ,the ,fisk is passing through with comparatively the early stages of growth1 when we compare it with the ideal which finds place in the dreams of its enthusiastic laborers--dreams which enfold the future result4 ,we doubt if the public1 although it lend a hearty sympathy and approval1 and expect good to flow from it1 begins yet to realize the work this institution is to perform4 ,we doubt if there is such appreciation anywhere existent or possible except in the dreams of its enthusiast laborers4 ,these in some way comprehend its future4 ,but the ,fisk has had to adapt itself in more ways than one4 ,at first it encountered1 as a matter of course1 but cold approval from the wealth and culture of ,nashville--not hostility1 but approval from a languid and cold judgment4 ,but perhaps the hardest task has been to adapt itself to the negro himself4 ,to secure the cold approval of intelligent judgment was apparently easy2 to go a little further and secure aid1 if it were necessary1 would not be hard2 but to lift the negro up to appreciate ,new ,england culture and conservatism and quiet labor1 is like bringing him1 in his early religious experience1 to accept the calm conservatism and quiet demeanor of the ,catholic1 ,presbyterian or ,episcopal churches4 ,in vain is he solicited to enter the intellectual stage of religious experience1 when nature tells him that his stage is the emotional1 if indeed it be beyond the sensuous4 ,this is the task ,fisk has set itself1 and is performing1 and performing well4 ,it is encountering1 and has encountered1 a world of prejudice from the very race it seeks to elevate1 and must content itself with working upon and with the creme de la creme of the race in the ,south1 while it cannot as yet reach the vast mass unless it let itself down1 and we believe that so long as its present laborers are at the helm it will insist on drawing others up and never let itself down4 ,it has a great and widening field1 which it is worthily filling1 and in the labor of regeneration of a race1 no agency will have a higher1 or indeed so high a place as this conservative school1 which is filling so difficult a position4 8,we are not unmindful also of the necessity for quite other laborers in the regeneration of this race4 ,it is just as necessary in school as in church that this yet blind and emotional creature1 #8crying for the light with no language but a cry1' shall have tendance suited to his condition and upon his own level40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tougaloo ,,university4 ,the annual examinations in this institution began on ,thursday1 ,may #bfth1 continuing ,friday and also ,monday forenoon4 ,many friends of students were present from various parts of the ,state4 ,the forenoon of ,sunday was taken up with the ,sunday-school1 with its very instructive lessons from the parable of the talents1 and immediately following this a temperance ,bible reading1 with its intensely practical and stirring appeals4 ,the latter was especially timely1 inasmuch as a large number of temperance tracts1 pamphlets and papers had been distributed to all the members1 just before1 for circulation as they return this summer to their own homes1 or go forth to engage in teaching4 ,supplied in this way1 the students from this school are the means of disseminating through the ,state a great deal of good temperance literature1 and are enabled to organize a multitude of little temperance societies4 ,it will not be amiss to note the fact1 as illustrating the high value of just this sort of work1 that besides these societies established by the students of this ,university1 there is no kind of temperance organization among the colored people in the ,state4 ,at the same time1 the prevalence of drunkenness1 and of the habit of drinking among all classes1 is appalling4 ,the following incident shows the crying need of a reform movement3 ,a colored church not far from here had communion service1 and when it was concluded1 the pastor and deacons tarried1 and following1 as they believed1 787 the instruction of the ,bible1 where it says1 8drink ye all of it10 consumed what was left of the generous supply of wine1 and thus made themselves beastly drunk4 was held in the chapel1 presenting to a crowded audience a varied programme1 made up of recitations1 declamations1 songs1 c4 ,a prominent feature of this exhibition was a strong and well appreciated temperance dialogue4 ,it was a manifest disappointment to all when ,tuesday dawned cloudy and dark1 with every prospect of a rainy time4 ,the exercises of the day were accordingly held in the barn1 instead of the grove1 for which all arrangements had been made4 ,the forenoon was taken up with the commencement exercises of the ,normal department4 ,the orations and essays were presented by members of the ,middle and ,junior ,classes1 with the single exception of an oration by the one graduate from the ,normal course4 ,as was said on that day1 what the graduating class lacked in quantity was new boy's dormitory1 was followed by a procession to the chapel again1 where the annual address was given by ,dr4 ,strieby4 ,this was a stirring presentation of the reason why the ,american ,missionary ,association is to-day in the field of ,southern ,freedmen education1 and of exactly what it is aiming to do for the colored race4 ,it was shown how this ,association was pioneer in the work1 and how1 gradually1 the most prominent and cultured of ,southern gentlemen have come to regard the higher education of the race as possible1 and1 now1 as a necessity to the prosperity and the material advancement of the region4 ,col4 ,power1 who with other gentlemen from ,jackson had been present through the day to witness the exercises1 was then called upon to speak4 ,he alluded to the exercises of the forenoon with appreciation of the orations and essays presented1 referring to one of the former as 8eloquent10 and added a glowing word of tribute to the sweet music rendered by the students4 ,he assured all present that the white people of the ,state are now in hearty sympathy with the work of the education of the colored race4 ,immediately after the war1 he frankly admitted1 temperance speech was made by ,deacon ,jones1 of ,raleigh1 whose grave was gratuitously dug for him at ,chapel ,hill some years ago by the ,ku ,klux1 but which he declined to occupy4 ,he tells us the by many1 not only as a matter of deep interest in itself1 but also as the harbinger of a better state of things for the enfeebled and almost discouraged church4 ,yet the field was an important one and must not be given up4 ,the ,lord had set ,his seal upon some faithful souls here1 and they were praying and hoping for better things4 ,here1 in the little graveyard adjoining the church1 lay those who had given their lives that ,africa might be redeemed4 ,here1 by their side1 lay one of ,africa's own sons1 the gifted ,barnabas ,root1 whose ,christian graces of character had endeared him to all who knew him1 and whose brilliant attainments had been to all the friends of the colored race at once a promise and a fulfillment of their fondest expectations4 ,their mute appeal1 seconding the conviction that ,god had not forgotten this station1 was eloquent1 and prevailed4 ,good ,hope was not to be given up4 ,on the contrary1 it was to be strengthened1 so far as human power could do so1 with a good hope1 true to its name1 that ,god would add ,his blessing in the fulfillment of the rich promises of ,his grace4 ,the property of the mission here is on all sides acknowledged to be the finest on the island4 ,it consists of a large tract of land1 part of it well wooded1 about a quarter of a mile wide and a mile long1 running back from the ,sherbro' ,river or ,sound1 and commanding a fine view of its many beautiful islands1 stretching across to the native town of ,bendoo on the opposite side4 ,the mission house1 large and well built1 the church and school-house1 besides a large number of 8fakis10 or groups of native huts1 are on this land4 ,the grounds in front of the mission house are neatly laid out with gravel walks and shrubbery1 and extend to the river road skirting the bank1 where lies the mission boat moored to its wharf4 ,it may be truly said of this place1 in the words of the grand old hymn1 that 8,every prospect pleases ,and only man is vile40 ,the property was well enough1 and there was work enough to be done among the dense native population settled upon or near it2 but an ordained minister to be the pastor of the church1 a married man1 a man fully qualified for the great and responsible work1 one after ,god's own heart1 earnest1 energetic1 efficient1 spiritually minded1 with a paramount love for the lost souls of his own people1 was wanting4 ,the good seed had been sown1 but there was needed some one to harrow it in1 nurture the growth and reap the harvest4 ,in this extremity ,god raised up one who seems to be the right man for the place4 ,mr4 ,kemp is a graduate of ,lincoln ,university1 and ably represents the thorough and practical training of that institution4 ,with his coming and installation as pastor1 the struggling church took heart1 and determined1 forgetting those things which were behind1 to press forward toward those better things which they believed were in store4 ,the examination took place on ,saturday evening1 ,april #ith1 and was well attended1 and although ,mr4 ,kemp was feeling somewhat unwell at the time he stood the long and searching fire of questions1 theological1 wise and otherwise1 with credit to himself and with great satisfaction to the council1 which1 besides the 8my-doxy0 members1 was composed of representatives of various shades of theological opinion4 ,this fact indeed formed one of the pleasantest features of the council4 ,here in the midst of a heathenism rendered fouler and more corrupt by contact with an immoral civilization1 and in a common work for a common ,master and a common people1 party names were wholly forgotten4 ,one of the best and most earnest prayers that ,i have ever heard was offered on this occasion by an excellent brother of the ,church ,missionary ,society1 and he had no book before him or gown on his back4 ,the ordination exercises on ,sabbath morning were attended by a full house1 while a deep sense of the solemnity of the hour seemed to pervade every heart4 ,the ,holy ,spirit was manifestly present to sanctify the new relationship with the outpouring of ,his grace4 ,as appropriate to the occasion1 the third chapter of the ,first ,epistle to ,timothy was read4 ,the sermon1 full of earnestness and spiritual power1 was preached by ,brother ,evans of the ,shengay ,mission4 ,the charge to the people by ,brother ,jowett was partially historical1 reviewing the course of the church in times past1 and counseling sound wisdom for the future4 ,brother ,nurse1 who knew something of the wants of the field1 gave the charge to the pastor2 and ,brother ,jackson1 of whose growing work at ,avery ,station a fuller account will be given at another time1 as his co-worker in the mission1 very feelingly gave his brother missionary the right hand of fellowship2 while it was my privilege to offer the ordaining prayer4 ,after the benediction1 pronounced by their new pastor1 the people1 with tears of gladness in their eyes1 flocked around him and his good wife1 whom they had already learned to love1 for a hearty hand-shaking1 which1 as some one has truly said1 is also one of the means of grace4 ,can it be necessary1 after this little glimpse1 so hurriedly taken1 of the hopeful relation just entered into1 to ask the sympathy and prayers of all the friends of missions for the blessings of ,god to rest upon the new missionary and his work at ,sherbro' ,island8 ,he will have many trying hours in that dark land1 where there are worse things to be feared and harder to be contended against than physical death4 ,but the promises are ,we are glad to bring before our friends this month the work among the colored people in ,washington1 ,d4,c41 as it has been carried on there by ,mrs4 ,c4 ,b4 ,babcock4 ,in her field1 as in that of our other ,southern missionaries1 the industrial work occupies a prominent position4 ,here the women and children learn lessons of practical value to them1 as they are taught to cut and make their own garments and repair old ones1 while at the same time they are instructed in truths of the highest importance4 ,in a letter recently received1 ,mrs4 ,babcock writes of this work3 8,the ladies of the ,congregational church have given #ahj yards material for the industrial work1 and a few of them gave a supper to the women's class1 numbering fifty4 ,the women have made #ajb new garments besides mending #ajj old ones during these three months4 ,this has been of untold help to them and their families40 ,her girl's sewing-school numbers #ace4 ,the natural outgrowth of these schools has been prayer-meetings for the women and young girls respectively4 8,the mother's prayer-meetings have been deeply interesting of late10 she tells us4 ,there is much need of temperance work all through the ,south1 and it is encouraging to read of the new ,band of ,hope in ,washington4 8,it has succeeded beyond my expectations10 ,mrs4 ,babcock writes1 8not only interesting the colored churches about us1 but also bringing in1 as officers and helpers1 some of the colored public school teachers and students from ,howard ,university4 ,there has been a good deal of enthusiasm about our meetings4 ,of same jealousy and bitter feeling from the churches around us that there is farther ,south40 ,speaking of the sickness and suffering among the colored people1 ,mrs4 ,babcock says3 8,i feel that ,i've been greatly blessed in having friends at the ,north respond so nobly to my appeals for help4 ,i have sold a great deal of clothing1 and the money received for it has done much good40 ,in connection with this allusion to the generosity of ,northern friends1 it may be well to mention that in the last six months boxes and barrels of clothing1 sewing materials1 etc41 have been sent through this ,arkansas1 taking with him two little slave girls1 one of whom was ,rebecca1 four and a half years old4 ,here she grew up in his family1 and was married to a man who belonged to another master1 and who hired his time1 paying one-half his wages as a mechanic4 ,in ,tennessee her mother was1 of course1 taken away to another family4 ,her father1 who had not belonged to ,col4 ,holly1 had already been sold to the ,red ,river country1 where he soon after died4 ,recently1 at ,little ,rock1 ,i was a guest for five days in the house of ,rebecca4 ,her husband owned his home1 together with two other ,shakespeare1 both rich in binding and illustration2 and on the walls were some1 not costly1 but tasteful and suggestive pictures1 one of which represented ,abraham ,lincoln1 ,charles ,sumner and ,john ,brown4 ,her deportment was that of a lady2 her company enjoyable4 ,she said she remembered well the time and the scene when she was taken from her mother4 ,the screaming was yet ringing in her ears4 ,she bore in mind the last words of her mother1 as she put a little red flannel shawl round her neck3 8,god bless my child6 ,god bless my child60 ,she had in memory also her own crying and bursting of heart4 ,so1 too1 was fresh in her mind1 her weeping of nights in the new home1 until1 upon the imperative chiding of master and mistress1 she was obliged to repress that relief of hidden sorrow4 ,her young mistress1 who was of about the same age1 upon growing up1 was sent to the ,high ,school of the city1 and she herself was kept at home1 and not allowed even to learn to read the ,bible1 out of which she was to be judged at the last day4 ,she did experience a keen sense of injustice and of murmuring2 but all of that she was obliged to suppress4 ,but what had become of her mother8 8,after freedom10 twenty-one and a half years since the parting1 she came over to look up the daughter4 ,but how shall there be an unmistakable recognition8 ,col4 ,holly and his wife have both passed away4 ,fortunately1 a woman1 who came over with the family1 still survived4 ,she brought the mother to the home of ,rebecca1 and pointing to her said1 8,that is your daughter40 ,then such hugging1 kissing1 and shouting of joy and weeping1 as is the sensation of the neighborhood4 ,i am sure that ,i never heard a daughter speak with more enthusiasm of love1 concerning her mother1 than did ,mrs4 ,solomon4 ,she thought she would have known her anyhow2 and her mother half came to the same conclusion when with such accuracy she depicted the scene of the parting4 ,and now she must go to visit the old family4 ,though the master and mistress are gone1 in their place is left the daughter1 whom she had nursed upon her own breast1 and who is now married to a ,northern man4 ,old times and scenes and friends are talked over1 but soon she gives vent to the pent-up sorrows of the mother's heart4 ,with all the intensity of a great nature1 she told of the grief at her separation from ,rebecca4 ,it was as though she had dropped blood from her heart2 she went weeping and mourning every where4 8,i wept as ,i was making the bread1 and them that eat the most of my bread eat the most of my heart40 ,so ,david had said3 8,thou feedest them with the bread of tears40 ,the old colored people told her she must pray and the ,lord would remove all that4 ,in her prayer it seemed as though there were deep waters and high mountains between her and her child1 and that the ,lord would have to send men and remove the mountains1 and make a way over the waters so that she could come to her child2 and now ,he had done it all1 and brought her to tell her story to the remnant of the old household4 ,the young mistress1 while her husband walks the floor in deep and mute emotion1 herself bursts into tears1 and as her only relief1 declares3 8,my father was such a man that he never would have done that thing if he had not got broke40 8,oh10 said the sable matron1 now rising up from the crushing of her womanhood1 8,i never thought anything about what caused it40 ,as ,rebecca came to freedom she tried to learn1 but her work for bread and the clumsiness of her unused powers were so
