far-reaching view of the valley and of the shimmering waters of the ,colorado4 ,on the west is the city of ,austin1 with its spires and busy streets1 and from the upper part of the building1 looking northward1 appear the far-extending prairies1 so familiar in ,texas1 while1 almost encircling the whole1 rise hills and mountains1 making this a most beautiful and picturesque spot1 and of all others fitted for an institution of learning1 where the student1 while treasuring up knowledge1 may have before him that which shall awaken a sense of the beautiful and the grand1 leading him from nature to nature's ,god4 ,in these points ,tillotson has few rivals4 ,as to its material1 it is a large brick building with stone trimmings1 #ajd feet in length1 #db feet in depth1 and five stories high4 ,it has a dining hall1 a beautiful and airy school-room about #cgdh2 three large recitation rooms1 with other smaller ones1 which are probably the most complete in their appointment of blackboards1 maps and desks of any in the ,state4 ,no one who has visited the ,institution has been heard to question this4 ,it may be added1 also1 that the building1 as it now stands1 is the gift of friends living in the ,east and ,west for the education of the colored youth of ,texas4 ,owing to delays in completing the building1 the opening of the school was deferred from ,october1 #ahhj1 till ,january #agth1 #ahha4 ,our numbers at the beginning were small1 but have been steadily increasing1 till now1 in the ,institute proper1 we have over sixty students1 with a good prospect that this number will be increased to at least a hundred before the close of the year4 ,we have a large class in algebra1 a still larger class in complete arithmetic1 comprehensive geography and ,united ,states history1 as also some ten or twelve in ,latin and an equally large number in ,english composition4 ,all of these are doing finely in everything but ,latin--only fair in this4 ,the question as to the spirit of the people will excite interest in the minds of many4 ,the 8,fool's ,errand0 and 8,bricks ,without ,straw0 have prepared some for a doleful statement on this point4 ,i am glad to disappoint them1 and in contrast to the above1 ,i rejoice to bear witness to the kindly and even cordial manner with which we have been received4 ,thus far not one rebuff from the ,governor down4 ,the people are not only kindly disposed1 but are pleased with the work carried on2 they do not all have equal faith1 but nearly or quite all acknowledge that it is a work that should be done1 that the colored people must be educated4 ,the ,state is doing something in this line now--not for us1 we have not asked for anything--and is bound to do more4 ,i venture the statement that in ten years1 no other ,state in the ,union will1 in proportion to the number of her people and area1 do so much for the instruction of the young as ,texas4 ,many are coming to see eye to eye and stand foot to foot on this question of universal education4 ,the completion of the building and fencing the grounds1 which is an absolute necessity1 with the cost of furnishing1 call for at least #b1jjj more4 ,this should be provided at once2 then land is needed2 thousands of colored youth in ,texas greatly desire an education2 they are worthy1 but poor4 ,yet their highest good requires that they pay for their education4 ,and1 since this is not possible in many cases1 some means should be provided by which they can4 ,the most practical way is to have land which they can work4 ,the result would be advantageous in two ways3 ,first1 it would enable them to maintain their self-respect2 they would feel that they were not receiving bounty1 but were paying their way2 this would make them more manly4 ,second1 it would be a practical school where they would be taught the best methods of agriculture2 this would be a priceless benefit to them4 ,but the ,institution owns no land save the spot upon which the building stands4 ,there are1 however1 some #dej acres of the first quality joining the ,institution grounds for sale4 ,true1 since close to the city it is dear2 but when once bought and paid for1 these acres become a bank that will never fail1 and always pay good dividends4 ,it would be a wise and noble act for some one to buy this land and present it to the ,institution2 with it the possibilities of ,tillotson ,institute would be greatly magnified4 ,who will purchase the farm1 and giving it his own name1 present it to the youngest child of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a48 ,finally1 we are all more than pleased with the field and its work4 ,it exceeds even our expectations2 the climate is delightful1 the location unsurpassed1 the present inspiring1 and the future radiant with hope4 99 99 99 99 99 ,it gives us ,british public1 8to devote thereto the sum of #bj1jjj1 and with the blessing of ,god and the assistance of the friends of ,africa in ,great ,britain and ,america1 to undertake permanently to sustain that mission40 ,they felt free to make this pledge1 as was stated in the ,,american ,,missionary at the time1 8especially as final receipts from the ,avery estate have recently come to hand1 which are devoted by the donor to the evangelization of the ,african race in ,africa40 ,the receipts above mentioned amounted to #ab1jjj4 ,mr4 ,arthington and the friends in ,great ,britain have already paid slaves to freedom1 nothing appealed with stronger effect to the sympathies of their friends than their wonderful eagerness for education4 ,they thought that if they only could obtain a knowledge of letters they would also come into possession of the white man's power and the white man's privileges4 ,an illusion this1 in so far as it held out promise of speedy fulfilment1 but a serious fact1 nevertheless1 in that it points to the only open door through which the ,freedmen or their descendants must pass1 if they ever do come into possession of that power and those privileges4 ,but illusion as it was1 it acted as an inspiration4 ,under its power1 old men and old women1 young men and maidens1 children and youth1 flocked into everything that was called a school for ,freedmen4 ,this unprecedented manifestation of a hunger and thirst for education was promptly met by a large supply of missionary teachers and educational facilities4 ,the promise1 however1 was larger than the fulfilment4 ,old people could not learn1 and young people must improve by the diligent application of persistent effort extending through years4 ,such is the teaching of all history and experience4 ,this the negroes did not know1 and many of their friends had apparently forgotten it4 ,reaction came1 and with it disappointment and discouragement4 8,it's no use1 chile1 ,i'se too old to learn10 said the old negroes2 and young ,sambo1 with a characteristic genuinely human1 began to develop a passion for sport rather than study4 ,the fact is1 the wonderful passion for study exhibited by the ,freedmen was abnormal4 ,it is not natural for scholars to be running ahead of their teachers and enthusiastically shouting back for them to come on4 ,as a rule1 the teacher must lead4 ,ability to inspire pupils with a love for study is one of the essentials for success in teaching4 ,the work of education1 like everything else good in this world1 must be pushed4 ,a full recognition of these facts dictated the original policy of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 in its educational work among the ,freedmen1 and has shaped its policy ever since4 ,institutions were planted and fostered with a view to permanency4 ,interest in sustaining them might rise or fall1 but the work1 in order to succeed1 must be patiently carried forward4 ,the flood-tide of enthusiasm on the part of the ,freedmen1 as a matter of course1 began to ebb when the difficulties of obtaining an education fairly dawned upon them4 ,some of their friends at the ,north1 seeing this1 began to lose faith in their educability1 and as a consequence began also to withhold their support from the work4 ,but the ,american ,missionary ,association said1 8,this is just as we expected10 and instead of yielding1 buckled down to its work all the more earnestly1 and argued for its continuance all the more forcefully4 ,the reaction would again react4 ,the tide of interest would return with healthier beat1 and the second call would be more effective than the first4 ,it was a firm faith in such an outcome that prompted the annual reports which1 for several years1 held out this bow of promise1 while that ugly debt was hanging like a threatening cloud over all the work2 and the faith has been justified by the results4 ,the reaction of the reaction has come4 ,the tide is setting back again with normal flow4 ,the cause is advocated from the leading pulpits2 our foremost statesmen endorse it2 the most influential newspapers editorially commend it2 the debt has been wiped out2 our schools are crowded to their utmost capacity1 and there is to-day sounding in the ears of the public a louder call for the immediate enlargement of work for the education of the ,freedmen than has ever yet been heard4 ,it is not the old1 with heads filled with all sorts of fantastic notions1 who now clamor for what they never can acquire4 ,the young and ambitious are pressing forward1 and they are doing it with eyes wide open to the difficulties that must be encountered1 while at the same time1 to give them confidence and hope1 they have before them the living examples of scholarly achievement on the part of some of the youth of their race4 ,these young men and young women1 who are now turned away from the doors of our schools because 8there is no room10 appeal to us not merely because they want to obtain an education for themselves1 but because they represent the neglected condition of a race4 ,it is a remarkable fact1 and most pathetic in its meaning1 that they plead in many instances to be taken into school in order that they may qualify themselves to be the means of the elevation of their people4 ,a critical time is this4 ,these millions cannot be left much longer in their ignorance without danger to the public peace4 ,vice does not tend to produce virtue4 ,ignorance does not tend to produce knowledge4 ,let the feeling settle down on the colored youth that all avenues for intellectual culture are closed against them1 and ambition for improvement will soon disappear1 and when the brood of evils to which ignorance is the prolific parent has been once fairly let loose upon the land1 it may be too late to remedy the mischief4 8,an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure10 says the wisdom of the ages4 ,the demand of the hour is1 8,let the wisdom of the ages be put to practical use40 ,recorded in books1 tossed from lip to lip1 it profits little2 it must be put into action4 ,no question presses upon the ,christian and patriotic thought of our land with greater urgency1 or bears within it farther reaching consequences1 than this same question of the education of our negro population4 ,the hour of opportunity is now4 ,we ask the friends of the ,freedmen to heed this second call that comes to them1 to prosecute the work of ,christian education among the negroes1 with a greater zeal and greater enthusiasm than ever before4 ,if we are faithful1 a rich harvest will be ours to reap4 99 99 99 99 99 negro education as an amateur1 in the literal meaning of the word1 during her annual sojourn in the ,south1 said to us recently that she did not believe in the attempt of ,fisk1 ,howard1 ,atlanta and like schools to give this people a higher education4 ,they should be taught the three ,r's1 and how to work1 and so fitted for their place in life4 ,she esteemed it an unfortunate mistake and blunder that they should be disqualified for it by a classical education4 ,an associate editor of one of our largest dailies1 a widely influential man1 commended1 not simply by its excellence1 but by way of contrast1 the work done at ,hampton1 not because in the pursuit of its own aims it left the work of higher education to other schools1 but because it taught its negro pupils to work1 and did not make fools of them by teaching them ,latin and ,greek1 and this1 not because he is opposed to higher education for any one1 but because such an education unfitted the negro for his place4 ,these friends are not alone in the opinion that the place of the negro is definitely known1 and that is one which demands and allows a very limited range of intellectual power1 and requires the exercise of his muscles chiefly4 ,we respectfully submit that the only possible apology for slavery as it existed in this country was based upon the assumption that the white man had the right to determine just the place in the scale of being that the black man should occupy4 ,he stood forth as the authorized interpreter of nature1 and maintained that both nature and ,noah had settled it that the sons of ,ham were fitted alone to be the servants of their brethren4 ,when we have assented to the proposition that nature has allotted to a race a certain position1 we have assented1 logically1 to the further and co-ordinate proposition that it should be fitted for the place and kept in it2 thus the whole code of slave laws stands approved and justified4 ,there has been much discussion1 and there will probably be a great deal more1 as to the proper place and exact sphere of woman2 and with more show of reason1 for she constitutes not a race1 but a class2 and nature has indicated in the fact of sex some of the possibilities of her nature and duties of her sphere2 has decided some things as possible1 and some as impossible to her4 ,she cannot be the father of a family2 but what she may be intellectually1 morally1 spiritually1 as a mother1 as a woman1 can be known only when she has opened before her unlimited opportunity for her untrammeled powers4 ,she may not transcend nature's limitations1 but she ought to insist that man's ignorance and prejudice shall not prove a more insuperable bar to what she may do4 ,that nature has placed any disqualifications upon the negro1 and has thus indicated or determined what is or what is not possible for him to accomplish1 we cannot know until we have so far removed the obstacles we have put in his way1 and stricken off the chains with which we have bound him1 and thrown open an opportunity which we have barred against him1 that he shall have a chance to show what the purpose was with reference to him2 and we may thus learn1 also1 as we are beginning to do1 what our injustice and wrong has been4 ,our treatment of the negro1 whether as slave or ,freedman1 has been and will be shaped by our theories in regard to him1 but it is time we honestly sought to know what the facts are1 and draw our theories from them rather than attempt to limit him by our prejudices1 as if they were indisputable facts of nature4 ,the master said the negro's place is that of a chattel slave1 and he wisely enacted that he should neither be educated out of it1 nor be allowed to escape from it4 ,the fortunes of war 7should we not say the misfortunes1 if the theory were correct87 broke the chain and palsied the whip-arm of the master1 and now his friends1 many of them1 who rejoice that he has escaped from his old place1 would attempt to fit him for a new one1 but determine for him what it shall be1 and express grave apprehensions of evil if we say he should have the best possible opportunity to find for himself what it is4 ,the war destroyed the old chain by which he was held in his appointed place1 but has not eradicated the disposition of the ,anglo-,saxon to decide for him what his new one must be1 and in the minds of many it is that of a laborer of the lowest grade2 and lest he might escape from it by rising above it1 they would see to it that his education shall be of such character as to fit him for it alone4 ,while the wise teacher sees to it that he shall not neglect thorough training in the most elementary branches in order to become a smatterer in ,greek and ,latin1 it should be done on the general principle applicable to all races and every individual1 that any other course would be consummate folly4 ,the theory to which our practice should conform is this3 ,give to every child of ,god the best opportunity possible for him as such1 and let him in the untrammeled exercise of his powers find out what his ,creator designed him to be and assigned him to do4 ,the time is coming when it will appear incredible that a man's place in the discouraging state of affairs at the beginning of the last1 its third year1 having but twenty-five names on the roll1 some of these permanently out of the city1 more who did not again connect themselves with the society1 and of the small remnant left death had claimed four2 while the resignation of both ,president and ,secretary took off two wheels of the chariot at once2 but the 8royal remnant0 rallied to the front and succeeded in creating a good degree of interest1 by various ingenious plans1 until now the roll of membership numbers forty1 and the outlook for the coming year is hopeful4 ,the expressed aim of the societies is to promote intelligence1 industry and piety among the women and girls1 believing that the missionary spirit will as naturally follow as that flowers in good soil will bloom in the warm sunlight and soft showers4 ,the report from ,talladega was encouraging4 ,in connection with this society are three committees1 one for visiting the sick1 one on grants any aid which is within its power4 ,a mothers' meeting is held1 and also a girls' mission band1 before whom mission work is held up in such a way that the hope is expressed that some may be led to consecrate themselves to the work of carrying the ,gospel to ,africa4 ,from ,mobile the report from the mothers' meeting showed an enrolment of thirty-two1 nine of whom have been added this year1 while the average attendance has been eight2 the great disparity between the enrolment and the average attendance being mainly due to the great disadvantages under which the mothers labor1 many of them widows obliged to toil hard for the support of their families4 ,it is only owing to a faithful and earnest desire that some are enabled to gather at the weekly meeting for prayer4 ,by much self-denial this year the mothers have contributed #c4ej for the ,mendi ,mission4 ,the ,emersonian ,mission ,band1 formed from the girls of ,emerson ,institute1 was reported in a state of progress2 of life1 spiritually1 mentally and socially4 ,mrs4 ,cheeny read a paper prepared by ,mrs4 ,a4 ,w4 ,curtis1 of ,marion1 on 8,how to ,reach ,mothers in their ,homes40 ,since ,mrs4 ,curtis is an invalid and a great sufferer1 being unable to visit among the homes1 it seemed at first an unfortunate topic for her consideration2 but when we listened to her paper and saw how she had been directed of the ,lord to reach the mothers and help them by bringing them to her own home1 and there giving them the perfect illustration of what a true ,christian home may be1 and of counseling and instructing them1 we were led to say1 8,man's extremity is ,god's opportunity4 ,man deviseth his ways1 but ,god directeth his steps40 ,this paper was an inspiration1 must have been1 to every mother present4 ,to this contact with the mother at her own home1 ,mrs4 ,curtis points as the first seed dropped which led to the revival at ,marion1 where such a harvest was reaped for the ,lord4 ,mrs4 ,deforest1 of ,talladega1 read a paper on 8,how shall we ,increase the ,interest in our ,work80 ,these brief mentions are only crumbs which fell from our bountifully loaded table1 the fragments1 hastily and poorly gathered together1 but we hope that you may gain some faint idea of the good which came to us by our mutual exchange of thought and sympathy1 and the encouragement we received to persevere in our good necessity to the ,freedman to own his homestead and to become a part of the 8realty0 of this ,southern country1 it is especially gratifying to see the modest homes and fruitful gardens and cultivated acres of our newly made citizens1 and to hear them say3 8,this is mine2 no man holds a mortgage on my home40 ,our annual meeting was regarded as in some respects the best we have ever held4 ,the brethren feel that they are climbing a little higher each year4 ,every church but the smallest mission church was represented1 and several delegates came #ajj miles to the meeting4 ,the reports from the churches were hopeful4 ,there have been seasons of refreshing and ingathering1 as at ,new ,orleans and ,new ,iberia4 ,in all ,i think there was a desire and purpose manifest to bring the churches to a higher standing of intelligence and holy living4 ,there is something of the old conference element in our meetings which is healthful2 to examine critically the ministers and their churches1 and to have their 8characters passed40 ,so men are here judged by actual results1 and vital defects in administration are criticised with kindly severity1 and impartially condemned4 ,the annual sermon was preached by ,rev4 ,charles ,e4 ,smith1 of ,abberville4 ,it was earnest1 evangelical1 and marked by a good deal of ability4 ,dr4 ,roy1 who is always heartily welcomed1 addressed the association with great acceptance4 ,the 8amen corner0 made itself heard while he spoke4 ,one good brother would occasionally break the silence by saying1 8,look at him4 ,he has a good hold now1 sure40 ,the session of opportunities of planting new churches1 and to make temporary provision for them4 ,two new churches were received--,st4 ,rock1 in the town of ,howma1 and ,little ,zion1 near ,thibodauxville4 ,these churches were regularly organized1 with the assistance of ,congregational councils4 ,to meet the growing demands of the field1 and in answer to the urgent request of the churches1 it was decided1 after faithful examination regarding the character1 doctrinal views and qualifications of the candidates1 to license for the term of one year ,mr4 ,squire ,williams1 of ,thibodauxville1 and ,paul ,martin1 of ,new ,iberia4 ,in the case of ,father ,benjamin ,fields1 of ,terrebonne1 who has suffered for his faith in ,christ and his fidelity to ,his service in the darkest days of bondage1 the association1 by a unanimous and cordial vote1 granted him a license without limitation of time4 ,the relation of his personal experience was very affecting4 ,when he had spoken of the torture inflicted upon him by the lash1 the paddle and the stocks1 the ,moderator asked him if while he suffered for his faith he prayed for his persecutors4 ,he said3 8,i should not have been a ,christian if last payment upon a chapel1 or to save a discouraged frontier preacher1 which would pay a fabulous revenue4 ,while our bankers and statesmen are devising means for funding the national debt1 who in all this broad land1 so rich in resources1 will decide to fund something of his surplus revenue in the way ,i have indicated8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,kansas4 ,the ,condition of the ,blacks at ,topeka1 ,kan41 and ,savannah1 ,ga41 ,contrasted4 ,,rev4 ,r4 ,f4 ,,markham4 ,i spent five years in ,savannah1 devoting my whole time to the colored people4 ,savannah claims #cj1jjj inhabitants1 of whom about #ae1jjj are colored4 ,topeka has #af1jjj inhabitants1 #e1jjj of whom are colored4 ,physical wants can be more easily supplied in ,savannah than in ,topeka4 ,in nearly all of the ,south the bare necessities of life are more easily secured than at the ,north4 ,the colored people of ,topeka have equally good schools with the whites1 where separate schools for them are established4 ,the ,state ,superintendent has ruled that any district which does not supply equal advantages for both white and colored can have no ,state appropriation4 ,savannah has tolerably good public schools for a little over one half of the colored children1 but the poorest teachers are employed especially outside of the city4 ,everywhere through ,kansas the blacks are as well supplied as the whites4 ,in ,topeka a colored man can take jobs and superintend business when he is competent1 and all are willing he should1 but in ,savannah ,i employed a very competent negro to superintend a job of mason work4 ,i asked a white mason a few days afterward if it would do to put mortar on green lath4 ,he replied1 8,i will not answer you4 ,you have got a nigger to do your work40 ,it is all right for colored men to do the work ,south1 but they must have a white overseer4 ,at the barber shops in ,topeka they shave both white and colored1 but let a colored man shave a black man in ,savannah1 and he will have no white customers4 ,if a white man and a colored man walk the streets of ,savannah together1 the colored man must go behind1 like a dog1 not walk by the white man's side4 ,it was a long time before ,i learned why even my struck out ,miss or ,mr41 as applied to colored persons4 ,i was told by a prominent man in ,savannah that any man who would sit at the table with a colored man ought to be driven out of the city4 ,a colored man cannot sue a white man in ,savannah and collect a debt2 but in ,kansas he is equal before the law4 ,a negro entered the ,presbyterian church in ,savannah when ,ralph ,wells1 of ,new ,york1 was lecturing on ,sabbath-schools1 and was called upon to pray1 at which the black sexton said to me1 8,the millennium must be here1 a colored man prayed in the ,presbyterian church6 ,i never heard of the first to go out4 ,we used to work on the farm1 hoe corn1 beets and cabbages1 etc4 ,i like to work on farm1 though it was hot4 ,every evening we used to have prayer-meeting with ,mr4 ,davis1 who had charge of us out there4 ,we had two ,indian boys to cook for us4 ,every ,sunday we used to go to the church1 though it is about four miles where we stayed1 and went to ,sunday-school1 too1 and went back as soon as possible1 so as to rest4 ,month was out1 we went back to the school4 ,on the way we met the other party of boys1 to stay there a month like we did4 ,when we got to the school they sent us right in the orchard1 to help the men in gathering fruits4 ,we got through1 then ,mr4 ,cocks took us on the farm to plant some potatoes4 ,then ,i went in one of the training shops to work4 ,i worked in there till my time came on again4 ,i went out there again1 this time we worked on a bridge which the colored students were building to shorten the ,normal ,school road4 ,some boys help load 7eighth year7 of our ,chinese ,schools takes place next ,sabbath1 ,april #bdth4 ,the following address has been prepared by ,jee ,gam to be delivered on that occasion4 ,i forward it as a sort of first instalment in our plea for the commencement of a work greatly needed1 and capable1 if rightly carried on1 of yielding most blessed results4--,w4 ,c4 ,p4 ,in ,china proper1 exclusive of ,chinese ,tartary1 ,thibet1 etc41 there are eighteen provinces1 among them ,kwong ,dioung1 of which the well-known city of ,canton is the capital4 ,this province embraces #gg districts1 and almost all of our ,christian ,chinese come from four of these districts1 which lie in a cluster about eighty miles south-west of ,canton1 and #ajj miles west of ,hong ,kong4 ,to these districts our young men expect to return1 and many of them already have returned4 ,their faith has often been tried1 but they have stood firm1 and have often come forth victorious1 because the ,lord ,jehovah has been with them4 ,i wish ,i could tell you all about the trials and persecutions of these converts2 but time will not permit1 so ,i will briefly relate the story of the marriage ceremonies of ,lee ,fon and ,quong ,jo4 ,these two brethren went home some three years ago4 ,not long after they had arrived the time for their marriages was undesignedly appointed on the same day4 ,when they learned of this1 and found that the day for their marriages could not be changed1 they were very much grieved1 for they did not wish the ceremony to be performed in a heathen manner4 ,the principal rites of a ,chinese wedding are the worshiping of ancestors1 and of the household gods4 ,the bride and bridegroom are married separately at their own homes4 ,after the marriage of the bride1 she is taken to the home of the bridegroom4 ,then both worship the ancestors together4 ,within a distance of eighteen miles there were only two ,christians--one of them a native preacher4 ,the help of these men was very much needed4 ,there being such a long distance between them1 it would have been impossible for the native missionary and the convert to attend both ceremonies4 ,so ,quong ,jo decided to stand alone1 and oppose his brothers and relatives1 who were urging him to worship the ancestors4 ,he would not do this4 ,they reviled him1 and threatened to compel him4 ,he still stood firm1 for the ,lord was with him even there1 alone in that heathen village4 ,finally they left him to himself to worship whatever ,god he pleased4 ,when the time came to place the offerings before the ancestral tablets1 ,quong ,jo turned the opposite way1 and prayed aloud to the true ,god whom he had learned to worship in ,america4 ,he was closely watched by a crowd4 ,at the same time the marriage of ,lee ,fon was taking place in his own village1 about ten miles from ,quong ,jo's home4 ,the native preacher and his convert were invited a few days previous1 and arrived early in the morning of the day of the marriage4 ,as soon as they entered the reception hall of the village1 the cry on the streets was3 8,two barbarians have come to the wedding40 ,fifteen minutes afterwards the hall was filled4 ,among those present were teachers and professors who had come to argue with the so-called 8barbarians40 ,for several hours the argument was kept up1 but each of these followers of ,confucius was1 in turn1 silenced4 ,his brothers and relatives1 who had been the chief persecutors1 now said1 8,we will let you worship the foreign ,jesus40 ,after this contest the missionary and the native convert returned with the bridegroom and his friends to his home1 where the marriage ceremony was concluded by prayer and praises to ,god1 instead of the worship of ancestors4 ,thus these two battles for the right were gained by four ,christians4 ,from this1 dear friends1 you can see that a native missionary who understands the customs and manners of the people1 and is thoroughly acquainted with their language1 is a very great help in two respects3 #ast1 in preaching the ,gospel to the people2 and1 #b;d1 in helping and advising those who are already converted4 ,we want more of such missionaries2 and we want more missionary stations in these districts4 ,neither can be had1 until we first establish a ,general ,mission or ,seminary in that country4 ,hong ,kong would be the most suitable and convenient city for the seat of such a mission4 ,i will tell you why4 #ast4 ,the ,english language is used more in ,hong ,kong than in any other port in ,china1 and the ,chinese living there1 or those visiting that place1 could not be reached in a more efficient manner than by opening the same kind of free schools for them as you have opened for us here4 ,they feel that they need to know the ,english language4 ,of course1 there are public schools where both the ,english and ,chinese languages are taught by the ,british government1 but all have their sessions in the day-time2 consequently1 the children are the only ones benefited by these schools4 ,there remains the laboring class unreached4 ,if a free evening school is opened1 ,i have no doubt that much good could be done among them4 #b;d4 ,hong ,kong is a great highway to all foreign ports1 especially ,san ,francisco4 ,through ,hong ,kong nearly all the ,chinese in the ,united ,states have come and will return4 ,if a ,general ,mission could be established at this port much co-operating work could be accomplished between our mission here and that at ,hong ,kong4 ,christian ,chinese1 returning home1 would receive letters of introduction to the superintendent of the ,hong ,kong mission4 ,this superintendent would have pastoral care over them1 and be a very great help in time of persecution4 ,converts would be made firmer in faith1 and more earnest in leading others to ,christ4 ,if this mission prosper1 as we have not the least doubt it would1 these converts could have preaching stations in these districts1 and from these stations reach every village2 but the work would be carried to a much wider extent by the aid of lady missionaries1 who alone could reach the women4 ,many of our number will go back there to study2 for if they return they must be well versed in the ,chinese ,bible and in the classics of ,confucius4 ,they will meet much opposition from educated men4 ,these will come and discuss with our brethren1 and they should be able to give a reason for the hope that is in them4 ,in regard to the cost of this mission1 what we propose would not be very expensive4 ,there should be one missionary1 a wise and earnest ,christian1 with good business capacity1 and one well-educated ,chinese helper2 and as the school grew and scholars were prepared to preach1 the range of studies and the number of teachers could be increased4 ,all our ,chinese ,christian brethren expect to do all they can towards the establishment of such a mission1 but we must have help from our ,american friends1 especially the friends of the themselves1 it often happens that they look to the parent society to furnish them2 and indeed one of the chief offices of the ,association is to bring together the need and the supply1 those who want help and those who have the heart and the hands ready to help4 ,so we are fortunate this month in having something to offer to the party requiring work1 and first we present a call which may well enlist sympathy and effort4 ,miss ,carter1 writing from ,nashville1 ,tenn41 asks in behalf of the ,president of ,fisk ,university1 whether our ,association1 in any of its auxiliaries1 would be willing to assume the education of a pupil there4 ,she says3 ,let me tell you of an especially sad case4 -------- is a little girl about thirteen1 her fair hair1 blue eyes and white skin prove her parentage4 ,her mother is a colored woman of the lowest class1 living and delighting in licentiousness4 ,there are numberless such1 but this woman differs from the majority in this respect1 it is perfectly immaterial to her what becomes of this daughter4 ,usually1 if the mother seems hopelessly bad she will yet try to shield her child from the same sin which has been her own ruin4 99 99 99 --------'s mother is different4 ,her grandmother has seen the danger to the girl of allowing her to remain with her mother1 so has sent her here4 ,but the grandmother can pay only five or six dollars a month towards her expenses4 ,the tuition and board are twelve dollars1 and beside this is the expense of clothing her4 ,if the girl can remain here four or five years1 such habits and good principles will be formed in her that at the end of that time she will be morally saved1 perhaps4 ,if during that time she could receive help she could then begin to teach and so help herself4 ,there is more than usual religious interest in ,fisk at present1 and little -------- has surprised all by showing deep interest4 8,will you not present her case to whomsoever will help her80 ,this opportunity offered suggests also that there are many such4 ,we do not know of any better or more satisfactory work for an auxiliary than to assume the support of a student at ,hampton1 ,carlisle1 ,fisk1 or some other kindred institution4 ,there is certainly no surer way to have a hand in the strengthening and purifying of our country as well as in saving individuals1 for the large majority of those so helped go directly into the work of helping up their own race as teachers1 and all so brought under the power of a ,christian education must be centres of good in the nation4 ,then here is one more opportunity1 and this is for the children4 ,the greatest1 perhaps1 or at least one of the greatest disadvantages under which these brave and earnest young teachers labor who go out from ,hampton1 ,fisk1 and other schools to teach their people1 is the almost total lack of good reading matter4 ,sunday-school papers are of really inestimable value to them in their ,sunday-schools2 but they can only get them occasionally and very sparingly4 ,now we know there are ,sunday-schools on ,sunday-schools of our ,congregational churches where the children would be glad to save their papers and send them regularly to such destitute schools1 where we can promise the children they will give double the pleasure they have ever given before--in fact will double the pleasure to each party1 to the givers and to the receivers4 ,now1 how to do it2 for1 in order to be a success1 the thing must be done systematically4 ,well1 then1 first1 if any ,sunday-school wishes to adopt the plan1 let them send to us and we will furnish them the name of a neighbor ,sunday-school in the ,west or ,south too poor to have any papers of its own4 ,then let them appoint some one to take charge of sending the papers1 and let each scholar be sure and remember to save his paper and give it to the one who has the business in charge4 ,the only expense1 in money1 will be the postage4 ,this often seems a good deal1 when large numbers of papers are mailed each week1 and some one may even be disposed to question whether it is worth the money2 but our ,home ,secretary1 who has taught some years at ,hampton1 and is in constant communication with teachers who have gone from there1 and is often sending papers and books in this way1 and receiving letters in return which show how they are appreciated1 thinks the good they do far outweighs the expense2 for1 she says1 in many cases1 the children would have absolutely no reading were it not for them4 ,so then1 third1 some one or ones1 will be found to pay the postage1 and the thing will be done4 ,the children will have the pleasure of reading the papers themselves1 the pleasure of sending them regularly to some one else who will appreciate and enjoy them even more than they2 the pleasure of hearing from these friends at a distance1 for the teachers will write them1 that is a part of the plan2 and the pleasure of doing something for ,jesus and helping ,his cause4 ,now1 who wants to take up with this plan and begin at once8 ,let them write to the ,secretary of the ,woman's ,home ,missionary ,association1 #bj ,congregational ,house1 ,boston1 ,mass41 and the address will be sent them forthwith4 ,where ,sunday-schools are not ready1 individuals can take up the work4 ,a little girl in ,philadelphia is sending two hundred a week1 her mother paying the however1 that some might blame her for giving from her deep poverty4 ,so she hid the money in the toe of a stocking and sent it to ,mrs4 ,vinton1 who was on a visit to this country from her mission
