was given us a few weeks ago4 ,an old colored man1 going home late ,saturday night1 intoxicated1 fell about eight feet into a gully and broke his neck4 ,the effect of the new law upon the colored people has proved very salutary4 ,knowing that this people have little opportunity for finding out the news1 ,i have adopted the plan of giving a brief resum1 such as will afford them some idea of the world's progress in all the great reforms of the day1 at the opening of our ,sabbath evening service4 ,it works well1 if intense eagerness in listening is a fair indication4 ,my first impression of this people1--,sabbath1 ,january #b;d--was that a very large infusion of white blood and brains was represented in my audience1 and it was very hard to think that most of them had been slaves4 ,the ,brains and culture stand on their own merit4 ,the accomplished white law-lecturers and the bright white students receive the colored aspirant lawyers on the basis of citizenship and scholarship4 ,simon ,cameron repeats at the ,north1 after a tour of the ,south1 8the picked-up notion of #8over-education' among the blacks1 the same1 of whom awhile ago it was said that they could not take on the higher education4 ,but how would the ,pennsylvania statesman have these sable attorneys prepared for their profession and for the competition of life and business8 ,does it not come with an ill grace that a man who has himself risen from humble position1 should rule down these ,africo-,americans to an education that would simply fit them for good servants80 ,of the twenty-five graduates of this ,law ,department1 seven are colored1 and they are making their way successfully in the ,courts4 ,of the nineteen students now in the course1 five are colored4 ,one is the pastor of the ,english ,lutheran ,church of the city1 a former graduate of a ,pennsylvania ,college1 and of ,princeton ,seminary4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,africa4 99 99 99 99 99 ,off for ,africa4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,,henry ,m4 ,,ladd4 ,it does not seem possible that anyone could ever have crossed the ,atlantic1 followed by more prayers and good wishes1 than attended and do1 we believe1 still attend us4 ,our good steamer1 the 8,city of ,berlin10 though advertised to sail from ,new ,york on the twelfth of ,february1 did not leave till the thirteenth4 ,we met on board1 quite unexpectedly1 some old college friends1 who were bound for a wait there a week for an ,african steamer2 but the time was well employed in some preliminary business in ,london and elsewhere1 with reference to the proposed new mission in the ,nile basin4 ,we had the pleasure of a short but interesting visit with ,rev4 ,o4 ,h4 ,white1 ,d4,d41 the earnest and efficient secretary of the ,freedman's ,missions ,aid ,society1 who has done so much to interest our ,english and ,scotch friends in the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,we also called on ,robert ,arthington1 ,esq41 of ,leeds1 whose munificent generosity has made possible the opening of the new mission near the head-waters of the ,nile1 which is to be distinguished by his name4 ,he received us very kindly1 and with outspread map before us1 we spent a pleasant afternoon together1 discussing plans and hopes for the opening of the work next fall1 which now seems to promise so well4 ,on ,saturday1 ,march #eth1 we embarked on board the steamship 8,mayumba10 for ,africa1 and our voyage has been a delightful one ever since4 ,the same steamer had on board two hundred tons of gunpowder for the slaughter of the natives4 ,like the vessel that carried out rum and missionaries to ,turkey1 this was carrying powder to kill the ,africans1 while we were going for their peace and healing4 ,yet we would rather a thousand times go with the powder than with the rum2 for the former1 horrid as is the art of war1 has in the hands of the ,english made a way in the wilderness for the heralds of the ,cross1 while the latter has been and always will be an unmitigated curse4 ,but the cloud is beginning to lift4 ,we believe that there is a bright and cheering history of ,african missions yet to be written4 ,the five millions of reserve force1 now drilling in ,america for the final victory1 are yet to be called out1 and they will come to the rescue4 ,they are already on the move4 ,these educated freemen have developed already many of the proper qualifications for the work4 ,we must expect failures and disappointments at first from those so recently in the degradation of slavery1 but we believe theirs is the work1 and they will yet do it1 and do it grandly1 too4 ,with a holy enthusiasm they are coming by degrees more fully to appreciate the fact that ,africa is their true field of labor--even as this excellent colored brother and his wife1 who are going out with me1 say they would rather die for their degraded brethren in ,africa1 than live in ,christian ,america4 ,as1 therefore1 we approach the shores of ,africa1 to enlarge and carry forward this work1 ,i feel that we are now moving in the line of ,god's appointment1 and that success must ultimately crown our efforts4 ,in this very steamer are those going out in ,her ,majesty's service to conquer the rebellious duty imperative1 and the church1 though stung to the quick with a sense of its dishonor1 too timid to come up to its task4 ,of course1 such things ought not to go into the papers nor any other but the good and glad things4 ,we can make others sharers of our joys1 but we shrink from asking them to bear1 with us1 our pains4 8,well1 that is all right10 ,i say to myself1 and so it is4 ,and yet those who sustain a missionary work have a right to see it on all sides4 ,god be thanked that ,i have had so much to report that was cheery1 stimulating1 hopeful2 so little that was otherwise4 ,i wonder if our friends and helpers--readers of the ,missionary--think that1 like the harvest fields of ,california1 so our ,gospel work is bathed in perpetual sunshine8 or do they know that here1 too1 we have our darkened skies1 our tempests untimely1 our frosts premature8 8,well1 it won't hurt them if they don't see the shady side10 ,i say to myself again4 8,yes1 but am ,i truthful in the matter80 ,i reply1 and so even conscience puts me up to make a gentle growl4 ,there is nothing very bad to growl about2 no more probably than ,i need2 far less than ,i deserve2 but there is something1 almost always1 on which if one allowed himself to brood1 he could soon get up steam to scold hard4 ,and ,i am not thinking just here of the greater trials of our work1 as when some riotous outburst of anti-,chinese prejudice sends these people at sunset to their several retreats1 and seems1 for the time1 to knock our schools prostrate2 nor of the sore trials from false brethren among our ,chinese ,christians--starting discords in the little flocks--or by their vile conduct bringing reproach on the ,gospel that they have proclaimed4 ,those things1 ,i am grateful to say1 belong to years past2 and1 besides1 we don't growl at the great trials--it is the comparatively little things that put us in a scolding mood4 ,for instance3 here is a teacher who has done well--been faithful1 skilful and successful2 has won the intense affection--almost the reverence of her pupils4 ,but her heart is young1 and somebody else's heart is young also1 and these two have grown together1 till1 in an hour of general congratulation1 their hands are joined1 and they start off upon life's journey no longer twain4 ,then the same zeal1 the same concentration of interest and effort which made her so successful a teacher1 is developed touching home cares and a husband's comfort2 and weeks grow to months and months to years1 and her face is not seen1 even for an hour1 in the school-room where she served so well4 ,she did not mean it so to be2 but so it was1 and the shrewd heathen ,chinese1 that was almost persuaded in view of her zeal and self-denial to become a ,christian1 thinks now that he sees through it all3 8,good pay1 good teach2 no pay1 no teach40 ,here is another teacher who took up the work with zeal and loved it--so she said and so she thought2 better and better the longer she wrought4 ,but she is cumbered with much serving all day long1 and brings a weak flesh1 and1 consequently1 a not very willing spirit to her evening's service at the mission4 ,the pupils note it4 ,it is indeed unmistakable1 for the head nods and the eyes close1 time and again1 before the last school hour is half expired4 ,they don't like to burden her1 and one by one they drop out of the school4 ,the ,superintendent intervenes as gently as he can2 but he finds that it is very difficult to dismiss a teacher and not lose a friend4 ,here is a field where the opportunity is evidently large1 and the gate to it seems wide open4 ,you enter it hopefully4 ,plans seem to form themselves almost without your thinking4 ,arrangements are made and the work begins4 ,then it appears the arrangements were not made2 that you 8reckoned without your host20 his plans and yours do not exactly dovetail1 and in this case a miss is as good1 and as ill1 as a mile4 ,delays ensue2 disappointment and failure seem inevitable4 ,the very elements seem to have conspired against you4 ,and yet that opportunity must not be lost1 for there are golden harvests possible in that wide-open field1 and1 somehow1 you must reap them4 ,it is getting past the middle of your fiscal year4 ,we have tried hard to make one dollar do the work of two1 and yet the appropriation is well nigh exhausted4 ,contributions come in slowly4 ,the churches1 you fancy1 have forgotten this work2 or1 possibly they dare not propose it among their charities4 ,you sally forth1 subscription book in hand4 ,you take the easy ones first1 the men that you 8know0 will give4 ,but they respond to your 8know0 with a different 8,no40 and you draw back to your retirement1 you enter into your closet1 and learn to go forth the next time in the use of a coinage and a wisdom not your own and prayer1 or the prayer-hearing ,master1 pulls you through1 so that when the year ends the year's bills are all paid and you take a fresh start for the next twelve-months' campaign4 ,but a truce to all this4 ,who expects to make a voyage and encounter no storms8 ,who can hope to win a battle without finding that there are blows to take as well as blows to give8 ,our ,master never promised us that just now the currents should float in either to the fulfilment of our task or the attainment of a full salvation2 but forewarning us that in the world we
