from the encouragement which the prosperity of the country at the beginning of our fiscal year gave us to make some additional appropriations to meet the most urgent calls that pressed upon us from the field4 ,a decline in that prosperity has been intensified by the drought in many parts of the country1 and our receipts for our regular work have fallen off4 ,we give the notice thus early that pastors and churches who sympathize with us and in our work1 and in our effort to avoid a debt1 may take immediate steps to avert the danger4 ,we are confident that if the collections of churches that are behind in their offerings1 and those that are set down for ,august and ,september1 are promptly and generously made1 the deficiency will be covered2 but1 fearing this may not in all cases be done1 we venture to ask individuals having our cause at heart to assure the certainty by additional contributions4 ,the pastors and officers of the churches can be our most efficient helpers by securing ,ohio1 she was converted at the age of fourteen years1 and took at once strong and decided grounds for ,christ4 ,she was for a time a pupil of ,mr4 ,sturgis1 of ,micronesia1 who inspired her with missionary zeal4 ,soon after her marriage to the ,rev4 ,francis ,spees1 she went with him to his missionary field among the ,chippewas of ,minnesota1 bearing the severest privations4 ,the journey required great fortitude4 ,the ,indians were in the rudest state of heathenism1 and life itself was not secure4 ,amid scenes of danger and peril1 she never shrank or wavered1 or regretted that she had entered on so arduous a work4 ,for three years1 ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,spees labored among these people1 and then left them for a quieter work at ,tabor1 ,iowa4 ,ten years later1 the way was opened for their return1 and no sooner were they back among the red faces than a precious revival was enjoyed among the ,government employees4 ,in addition to her work as missionary1 ,mrs4 ,spees added the care of the ,girl's ,boarding ,school4 ,this was too great a tax upon her1 and after a few years her strength gave out1 and she was obliged to rest4 ,for three years she waited by the river4 ,her pastor says that often1 when visiting her in her feebleness1 he found her wearied with the slow progress of the work of ,christ on earth1 and turning over in her mind how money could be raised for the spread of the ,gospel4 ,her work well done1 she has now entered upon the 8rest that remaineth to the people of ,god40 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,pastor of the ,central ,congregational ,church of ,brooklyn must take a great deal of solid satisfaction in the noble missionary work of its ,sunday-school4 ,thoroughly imbued as he is with the mission spirit1 he does not fail to impart something of it even to the lambs of his flock4 ,this school is also blessed with one of the most earnest and successful ,christian workers of the city as its superintendent1 and1 therefore1 it is not surprising that1 in addition to its own local missionary work1 it supports1 this year1 four missionaries--one in the foreign field1 and three among the ,freedmen4 ,we take great pleasure in referring to this school1 whose example might be followed by many others with great benefit to the cause of missions1 and1 also1 to the schools themselves4 99 99 99 99 99 ,if the person who sent us a card1 post-marked 8,hartford1 ,conn41 ,alabama1 this year1 the ,memorial ,address was delivered by ,tennent ,lomax1 ,esq41 son of ,gen4 ,lomax1 who fell at the battle of ,seven ,pines1 and whose monument1 the principal one in the cemetery at the capital1 received the special floral attentions of the day4 ,we give an extract from the oration as printed in the local daily3 8,let us again to-day1 standing upon this sacred spot1 extend the hand of perfect reconciliation to our fellow citizens of the ,north1 and ask them to clasp that hand in the true spirit of fraternal love1 and to live with us as a band of brothers1 united in one grand enterprise1 the advancement of the honor1 the interest1 and the glory1 of our common country2 and to pray with us to almighty ,god to hasten the advent of that day1 for it must surely come1 when the star-spangled banner1 #8with not a stripe erased or polluted1 nor a single star obscured1' shall float1 not over #8a country dissevered1 discordant1 belligerent1' but over a union of co-equal ,states1 re-united and bound together by a golden chain of unbroken friendship40 99 99 99 99 99 ,at the meeting of the ,north ,carolina ,conference at ,dudley1 in ,may1 one of the delegates1 ,deacon ,stevens1 of ,beaufort1 as he was preparing his pipe1 heard the little children of his host remarking to themselves about the poison of tobacco1 and the bad practice of using it4 ,his thought was started4 ,he went out to get away by himself for a smoke4 ,he observed that the people about him were not indulging in that habit4 ,at the end of the three days' meeting1 he searched about the audience room to see if there were any of the defilements of tobacco4 ,he found none4 ,that church1 7,rev4 ,d4 ,peebles1 pastor17 and its ,band of ,hope eschew tobacco as well as all intoxicating drinks4 ,the deacon went home convinced1 as he said1 that it was a 8dirty1 ugly1 mean habit40 ,he joined in starting a ,band of ,hope1 and told his experience as above narrated4 8,a little child shall lead them40 ,the little ones did not address him1 but he thought that they intended their remarks for his benefit4 99 99 99 99 99 ,mr4 ,spurgeon finds caste even in ,england4 ,he says3 8,i know several half-sovereign people who would not think of asking a half-a-crown to tea1 and there is a very strong aversion on the part of the half-crowns to the three-penny pieces2 and1 perhaps1 a stronger aversion still on the part of the three-pennies to anything coppery4 ,i have heard of a ,christian minister in this country now1 who1 ,i am told1 is humble and useful and talented1 but there is not a congregation that will have him for its minister4 ,he was nearly starved to death a few years ago1 and the great sin he has committed is that he married a black wife4 ,now1 you would not like a minister's black wife2 you know you would not4 ,up comes the caste feeling directly4 ,we condemn it in the ,hindoo1 and here it comes in this country4 ,we like a negro if he has been a slave1 and we raise money for him when we would not for a white man4 ,now1 ,i do not think a black man is any better than a white man1 and ,i do not think that because a man is green he is at all superior4 ,i believe that we are all pretty nearly equal1 and that ,god made of one blood all nations on the face of the earth4 ,but we want to hear these stories about caste in ,india that we may be taught to avoid it here2 and if it were not for these follies1 vanities1 and prides of human nature1 carried out to extremity abroad1 we might not so readily see them to be evils in what is thought to be a mild form at home04 99 99 99 99 99 ,,two ,,conventions4 ,during the sitting of the ,virginia ,republican ,convention at ,staunton1 the members were as free from molestation as they would have been at ,worcester1 ,mass41 and the hotels were open for their entertainment1 white and black alike4 ,for three days1 colored men took their meals in common with white men and women in the public dining-rooms of houses kept by life-long democrats4 ,one day1 at the principal hotel1 a black man was seen dining with representatives of some of the oldest families of the ,state2 other colored men sat at different tables around the room2 while a large number of staunch democrats1 men and women1 went on with their meals as if the scene was not an unusual one4 ,whether this is due to a change of sentiment1 or to policy induced by fear of the re-adjusters1 may be open to doubt1 but the fact is significant4 ,no less so is the fact that not a single colored man had a seat in the ,convention at ,cincinnati4 ,if the unusual treatment of the negro voter in ,virginia is due to a change of sentiment1 this change is not so observably great in the ,union at large4 ,if due to fear1 this fear is not so great in other ,states as in this where the colored line has been broken4 ,this would seem to indicate that a solid front will be maintained longer on national than on ,state issues4 ,we have discharged our duty in regard to these facts when we have simply stated them4 ,their cause and significance we leave to others2 while we take the opportunity for saying1 that not until the negro voter1 by his intelligence and virtue1 commands the respect of his fellow-citizens1 can he be other than an object of contempt and abuse when weak1 and of fear when strong2 and a source of danger1 whether weak or strong4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,hard ,,cases4 8,the destruction of the poor is their poverty40 ,this is illustrated not alone in the history of families1 but of missionary enterprises4 ,poverty1 long continued and excessive1 breeds a thousand evils more destructive and more difficult to overcome than poverty itself4 ,the very features of a given case which constitute its strongest appeal for help1 are the ones which render it almost impossible to afford relief1 however much help is given4 ,this1 the experience of all philanthropists1 is many times repeated in the history of our work1 and the wisest discrimination is necessary to ensure that our efforts shall be made where the greatest good can be done2 not necessarily where misery and ignorance utter their loudest wail4 ,one of our missionaries writes from a field where the people are living very near the line of absolute starvation4 ,they are as ignorant as could be inferred by the most logical mind from their whole past history2 they are as bigoted and superstitious as their training can legitimately make them2 they are as much in need of what the missionary offers them as a people can be4 ,if he partially educates the children1 the ,stygian darkness of their homes seems to blot out what they have learned2 if he enrolls them in the temperance army1 they lose step when they pass the boundary of childhood2 if a hopeful revival comes to cheer his heart1 causing him to forget his past toils and despair1 the converts over whom he rejoiced are swallowed up by the old churches about him1 which teach salvation through loud shouting or semi-occasional feet-washing2 and his hopes would die1 only that there are a few bright ones among the children who have twined themselves about his heart4 ,amid the almost universal chorus of rejoicing from all parts of the field over abundant and cheering results1 there comes1 once in a while1 a note like this from one who labors1 not less abundantly or acceptably than others1 but with more doubtful success4 ,from another field1 the missionary tells of a revival commencing among his own people1 which was the signal for desperate rival as well as revival efforts in the other colored churches1 directed largely to the end of drawing away from him the results of his labors4 ,he notes a fact which seems to him strange1 but one which1 we apprehend1 is destined to repeat itself with great frequency as the work of education goes on4 ,the colored people seemed less responsive to the efforts which the church1 unusually active1 puts forth4 ,as the negro becomes more intelligent1 we hope and believe that he will prove less highly inflammable2 and he should comfort himself with the assurance that the results of all genuine religious revivals belong to the ,lord1 and we will rejoice in it all1 under whatever banner the new recruit marches4 ,the bigotry of sectarianism1 which is of ofttimes so trying1 should be classed with other sins which the ,gospel1 rightly preached and broadly illustrated1 will in time remove2 and1 if under educational influence1 the negro kindles more slowly to religious zeal1 he will doubtless burn more steadily1 and in the end yield more light and heat4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,teacher ,,or ,,missionary1 ,,which8 ,the ,natal ,mercury1 ,south ,africa1 paints a dark picture of the ,caffres1 even of those who have professed ,christianity4 ,many fathers1 it says1 still sell their daughters in marriage for cattle as in years past1 and many practice polygamy1 which still has a very strong hold upon those of whom better things ought to be expected4 ,this is1 indeed1 cause for deep regret1 but ought not to be of great surprise4 ,it may be true1 that by one supreme exercise of faith in the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 the results of a whole life of debauchery can be corrected in a single moment2 that impure imaginations and dominant appetites and perverted tastes may all be utterly eradicated1 and the degraded slave of many years restored to the normal condition of an uncorrupted child4 ,this may be1 for men assert that it has been done2 but1 most assuredly1 it is not so common as to be expected ordinarily4 ,the prodigal who has gone into a far country has a long journey to retrace1 and he comes back with many swinish tastes and habits of thought which he masters1 if at all1 by most persistent1 prayerful and painful efforts4 ,the grace of ,christ comes in as most stimulating and efficient aid in these efforts2 but it comes as aid to effect1 and not in the form of accomplished result4 ,what the exact1 literal truth may be in the poet-prophet's prediction1 that 8a nation shall be born in a day10 we do not know2 what new forces may be called into play1 or what added efficiency may be given to those now employed1 when the kingdom advances with millennial power and celerity1 we know not2 but as yet1 no labor-saving machinery is known to the ,church militant4 ,the ,gospel has still to be carried by laborious1 self-denying effort into the homes of the degraded1 and it gains its victories1 if surely yet slowly1 over the vices and evils of man's corrupted heart and life1 and he comes to the stature of a perfect man in ,christ ,jesus by a gradual growth4 ,the ,sandwich ,islands afford the striking illustration of the prophecy to which allusion has been made4 ,but1 in this case1 the 8day0 covers more than half a century1 and has not yet reached its meridian1 and even there deplorable facts prove that the mass of the people might be 8born again and again10 as the good colored preacher has it1 with advantage4 ,we are told that in the homes of the people are yet to be found many of the fruits of their long degradation--much impurity of life1 little of the spiritual strength and elevation of character which the ,gospel produces as its ripened fruit4 ,the question comes1 and often with a pressure from our friends1 as to the multiplication of missionaries1 and1 of course1 because of our limited means1 corresponding diminution of educational work4 ,our work is limited by the money put into our hands1 and1 therefore1 we are compelled to choose between them1 when we cannot do both of two desirable things4 ,it would be pleasant1 and a source of great spiritual comfort and social advantage every way1 if we could send an excellent ,christian woman into every negro cabin of the ,south1 who should bring her refined womanhood into loving and sympathetic contact with the ignorant and lonely aunties1 who never see a cultured white woman socially4 ,it were easily possible to organize an evangelistic movement which would set the religious nature of the negro ablaze1 and gather the people by tens of thousands into the churches which could be erected with the money now employed to sustain our schools2 but all this would leave the negro helpless1 at the mercy of the bulldozer or debaucher1 and still under the control of his licentious and dishonest habits4 ,the work must be more thorough1 and1 therefore1 more tedious than this4 ,the negro character needs to be created in germ1 and then developed into a worthy manhood and womanhood by thorough ,christian culture1 and the best and only adequate missionaries are the ,christian teachers in our schools4 ,conversion1 as the negro in his ignorance understands it1 is not the most important or desirable thing to be accomplished4 ,we must first secure an enlightenment of the understanding1 a toning up of the moral constitution1 which shall give value to conversion when it does occur4 ,conversion is but the beginning of a new life--a beginning which is utterly worthless except in connection with an adequate conception of what that life is1 and unless that life follows4 ,no one who at all comprehends the nature of the work to be done1 will advocate other policy than the one we now pursue of 8hastening slowly40 ,we must enlarge1 equip and multiply our educational facilities through the ,south4 ,when this has been done1 the number of missionaries may be multiplied manifold with advantage2 but to displace or weaken educational agencies for those that aim at conversion and spiritual comfort1 would prove utterly disastrous4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,wrongs ,,of ,,the ,,poncas4 ,the removal of the ,poncas from their reservation1 and the failure of ,congress to pass the bill for their relief1 illustrate the facility with which crimes1 and blunders which have all the fateful results of crime1 have been committed by us against the ,indians2 also1 the criminal tardiness with which we correct such blunders4 ,the ,government in #ahfh made a new treaty with the ,sioux1 and settled them upon reservations in ,dakota1 which included #if1jjj acres of land belonging to the ,poncas1 one of the most peaceable of all the ,indian tribes1 who had held and had been dwelling upon this land ever since they were known as a tribe--held it1 too1 as an absolute grant from the ,united ,states1 under a guaranty of peaceable possession during good behavior4 ,without their knowledge or consent1 as also without a shadow of complaint against them as a tribe1 their reservation was set apart and given into possession of the ,sioux4 ,failing to gain their consent to a removal1 the ,government forced them1 without compensation1 for their homes and fields1 or other losses1 to abandon their own and settle upon a reservation in the ,indian ,territory1 where the climate was to them inhospitable4 ,as a result of this1 their numbers have been greatly diminished1 they have become discouraged and disheartened1 and are making no progress toward self-support4 ,this alienation of their lands was an acknowledged blunder1 due to ignorance of boundaries on the part of ,congress2 but their arbitrary and cruel ejectment from their homes1 without charge of crime1 and in violation of most solemn pledges1 is more than a blunder2 it is an act of high-handed injustice and robbery4 ,the bill reported by ,senator ,dawes1 of the ,senate ,select ,committee1 to investigate their removal1 requires the ,secretary of the ,interior to return the ,poncas without delay to their ,dakota reservation1 and provides that their title to the same shall be deemed valid1 anything in the ,sioux treaty to the contrary notwithstanding4 ,it also requires the ,secretary of the ,interior to restore to the ,poncas 8use and enjoyment in the same condition1 as nearly as may be1 when left by them1 all houses and other improvements and personal property belonging to the tribe when removed from ,dakota1 and for all the foregoing purposes provides an appropriation of #ej1jjj40 ,the minority report proposed simply to compensate them for losses sustained by removal1 but hints at no remedy for the wrongs they have suffered in this removal4 ,and now ,congress has adjourned without action of any kind for their relief1 and they are left to brood over their wrongs1 and mature such plans of revenge as suggest themselves to savage minds4 ,the appointment of a commission to ,china to investigate1 report upon1 and adjust the difficulties growing out of ,chinese immigration1 suggests the propriety of a commission of like character1 as regards its members1 to take into consideration the agitating questions relating to the ,indians4 ,there is nothing which more nearly touches our honor1 or more intimately affects our peace and prosperity1 than does the condition of these people4 ,we believe that a commission of statesmen would devise some solution of our difficulties1 and suggest a remedy for the wrongs and injustice which have characterized our treatment of them1 and thus bring to an end their wild and lawless mode of life4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,negro ,,on ,,the ,,indian4 ,the negro teacher of the ,indian boys at ,hampton pithily says some things which go right to the heart of his subject1 and are well worth repeating and remembering4 ,the following extracts are from ,prof4 ,robbins' ,report to the ,trustees of ,hampton ,institute4 ,the much-abused negro1 forgetful of his own wrongs1 stands before the ,anglo-,american to plead for the ,indian and urge a more excellent treatment of him4 ,we commend the whole report to the thoughtful consideration of those who yet doubt the capacity of either the negro or ,indian for ,christian civilization3 8,the ,indian problem which the people of the ,united ,states have so long been trying to solve may be briefly stated thus3 ,shall we be able to teach the ,indians to surrender their lands and their houses to us1 when we want them1 without fighting8 ,it is a singular fact that the ,american people require more ,christian charity from the ,indians than they themselves are ready to give40 8,the question is not1 can the ,indian learn1 but will he put his knowledge to practical use8 ,the answer to this question depends upon the future policy of the ,government4 ,the white man1 to put his knowledge to the most practical and profitable use1 has a choice of location4 ,he goes where his services are most demanded1 and where he can get the best returns for his labor4 ,are these ,indians to be bound to get their living on one reservation1 or will they be left free to choose homes for themselves80 8,unless education is made to mean more than brain culture1 it may yet prove the curse of the ,anglo-,saxon race4 ,thousands of young men and women who leave our high schools1 seminaries and colleges1 all over the land1 graduate a degree higher than their social surroundings4 ,the majority of them return to their homes unprepared to put their philosophy and literature into every-day practical life4 ,with them1 life becomes one continued grind1 and the long list of intelligent criminals is only a sad sequel of it4 ,the education which will nerve and strengthen a man for his calling in life is the most practical1 and is the most needed to-day40 8,the condition of the ,indian is unlike that of any other people in the world at present4 ,he is not only banished from the best contact with civilization1 but he is hated1 hunted1 envied1 and yearly the boundaries of his place of exile are growing smaller2 his rights are conferred by a superior power1 and are so limited that his gun is his only defence1 for the awful judgment of the nation is always against him40 8,it should not be asked1 how can we meeting and conquering its difficulties40 8,we want to make savages ,christians in a day1 and after a short trial we see that it cannot be done4 ,christianizing is not the work of a day or a year1 or particular race or color1 but speaks of #8all men4'0 8,it takes a higher degree of civilization than all ,anglo-,saxons possess1 to give up an opinion to which one stands committed1 even when he knows it is false4 ,but it is grand to think that neither fears nor prejudice can be a final obstacle to the work4 ,the greatest revolutions in popular opinion which the world has ever known have been the come to a determination to throw aside the ,indian's mode of thought and feeling with the old dress and way of life4 ,this seemed apparent in the beginning1 but we feared that the older ones1 at least1 would soon grow weary of the restraint1 which they must find very irksome4 ,we have between sixty and seventy pupils over sixteen years of age4 ,with few exceptions1 these young men and women are helpers in discipline1 as they are in all the manual labor necessary for their mutual comfort4 8,some time ago1 one of the young men came to the girls' quarters and asked to see his sister4 ,the interview was in the presence of an interpreter1 who reported that he gave the little girl a kind but very serious talk4 ,he told her that he had noticed that she was noisy and idle1 and that she laughed too loud on the playground4 ,said he1 #8,we came here to learn4 ,i do not know the white man's way very much yet1 but if ,i do wrong it is because ,i do not know what my teachers want me to interpreter tells us that among the ,sioux1 the boys and girls of the same family seldom or never speak to each other2 this makes it the more remarkable4 ,they are far from indifferent to each other's comfort and happiness1 however1 as is invariably shown in time of sickness or any kind of trouble4 ,the letters received by the children from their parents almost invariably counsel obedience to teachers and submission to all the regulations of the school4 8,an intimate acquaintance with these children1 and through them a better knowledge of their people at home1 have increased our respect fair girl-baby in her first short dress1 then carefully placing her upon the bed1 stood back1 mother-like1 to admire4 ,the outer door of my room was wide open1 and ,i saw approaching what seemed to me hung over her forehead to her eyes4 ,her face1 neck and breast were painted in narrow stripes of different colors4 ,about her waist was fastened a short skirt made of a part of a buffalo robe4 ,she saw my darling1 and before ,i knew what she intended she had her in her arms4 ,what did ,i do8 ,why1 ,i sprang forward1 saying1 #8,you horrid1 dirty thing1' and took my baby into my own arms4 ,the poor miserable woman looked at me in the most pitiful manner1 and then gathering up the corner of her blanket1 she held it in her arms as one would hold a sick infant1 and at the same time with a mournful cry1 she made a sign that her baby had died2 and to show how great her grief had been1 she held up her hand so that ,i could see she had cut off her little finger1 which is one of the extreme mourning customs of the ,kiowas1 and she also pointed to the deep scars on her breast and arms4 ,tears ran down her cheeks1 and my sympathies were so moved that almost unconsciously ,i placed my baby back in her arms4 ,how carefully she handled her1 and how tenderly she passed her hands over her plump limbs4 ,after some minutes she handed her back to me1 and with a grateful look and smile1 giving me a hearty hand-shake1 she departed4 ,in a week she came again1 and placed in my lap about a peck of ripe wild plums1 which ripen there in the early spring4 ,they had been freshly washed1 and were bounds to the habitations0 of the different races of men1 or to any race1 that fact should enter into our plan of missionary work4 ,it is our duty to succeed4 ,how to do it1 is worthy of our greatest thought and most earnest prayer4 ,when we take the road to success in ,god's work1 we find heavenly attendants all along the way1 and abundant supplies of grace and every needful thing4 ,just now the great question before the ,christian world is1 8,how to succeed with missionary work among the recently discovered ,pagans in ,equatorial ,africa40 ,attempts have been made on the borders of this country for hundreds of years1 but no permanent success has been achieved inland4 ,we have learned1 however1 two things4 ,one is1 that white men and mulattoes are1 as a rule1 incapable of preserving their health and lives in the climate of tropical ,africa2 and the other1 that the genuine negro has a constitution entirely fitted for its vicissitudes4 8,negroes for ,negroland0 must be emblazoned on the banner of the successful missionary army1 as it goes forth to battle against sin through the ,dark ,continent4 ,the history of every missionary endeavor of long continuance among the negroes in tropical ,africa warrants this conclusion4 ,but have negroes succeeded as missionaries8 ,they have not had much opportunity for doing so1 as but few missions have been committed to their care4 ,public sentiment has been against them4 ,the theory of manning stations by black men is comparatively recent4 ,our great societies1 however1 are forced by the unfolding of providential events to weigh the evidence in favor of the theory4 ,the only question left to be settled pertains to the negro's aptitude and capacity4 ,can he achieve success in the domain of missions8 ,we are fortunate in having an illustration which enables us to answer this question in the affirmative4 ,in #ahba1 an ,african lad was captured in a village about #ajj miles from the ,bight of ,benin1 and put on board a slave-ship1 from which he was subsequently rescued by the ,english government and landed at ,freetown4 ,here he was received into a mission school under the care of ,mr4 ,weeks4 ,in #ahbe1 when #ae years of age1 he was baptized1 and sent to ,england to study4 ,soon after1 a ,bible-school for training native students to preach was established at ,sierre ,leone1 and the young ,african1 who had been named ,samuel ,crowther1 was recalled and placed in this school1 where he remained as student and teacher until #ahda4 ,at this time1 ,lord ,john ,russell's famous ,niger ,expedition selected ,mr4 ,crowther as interpreter1 and while exploring the territory on the west bank of the ,niger1 he became exceedingly interested in the people living in the villages of the country4 ,when the purpose of that expedition was abandoned1 ,mr4 ,crowther gave himself to missionary work in the towns he had visited4 ,to fit him more thoroughly for this1 he was sent to ,england1 where he remained till #ahdc4 ,he then returned to his chosen field1 reduced the language of the people to writing1 and preached the ,gospel to them in their native tongue4 ,at one of his preaching stations1 he discovered his mother1 brother and two sisters1 who had been held in slavery for many years1 and procured their ransom4 ,among his first converts in the great town of ,abeokuta1 was his own mother4 ,at this place1 he commenced preaching in #ahde4 ,in #ahfa1 there were reported to be #a1ejj converts as the result of his labors4 ,in #ahfd he was consecrated 8,african ,bishop of the ,niger40 ,since then he has proceeded with his great work with many additional facilities4 ,some friends in ,england have secured for him a steamboat1 valued at more than #bb1jjj1 by which he is able to visit his mission stations1 now nine in number1 located along the river1 and superintend some #bb native preachers and helpers under his charge4 ,at an early age he married ,asano1 a girl delivered from bondage at the same time with himself1 and instructed in the same school4 ,several children were born to them1 and some of these1 at least1 are very worthy and helpful to their father4 ,here we have in a nut-shell an illustration of how the work may be done4 ,representatives of the inland tribes may be gathered into suitable schools1 taught the things which pertain to the ,christian faith1 and practiced in the arts of teaching and preaching1 under the supervision of wise and experienced missionaries1 and then returned to their tribes to declare the good news of a salvation which1 through the blessing of ,god1 they have experienced4 ,the illustration we have chosen would indicate that it were wise to establish the training-school in ,africa itself2 and the fate of scores of white missionaries and others of our race1 who have perished on account of the climate of ,africa1 points to the wisdom of selecting black men as teachers in these training-schools1 whenever suitable persons for the position can be found among the colored people4 ,the venerable ,dr4 ,moffat affirms that black missionaries for ,africa is the 8,divine plan40 ,dr4 ,blyden tells us that the climate of ,africa recognizes only pure negroes with favor4 ,it conforms to no prejudices or customs of society in assigning mulattoes to the negro race4 ,unmixed black men alone are welcomed with long life and happiness4 ,god sets bounds to habitations1 but the love of ,christ in ,god is unbounded4 ,the good tidings of great joy has no metes4 ,the heathen and the uttermost parts of the earth are within the borders of the kingdom4 ,the elect and precious are separated by no climate or partition walls4 ,they shall come up from the ,north1 ,south1 ,east and ,west4 ,we can only hope to succeed in doing our part towards hastening the consummation when we have fallen into line with the logic of events1 and have accepted the new phases of work for the negro as they are providentially unfolded4 99 99 99 99 illustration of what can be done as well as of what is being done for the colored race1 the proficiency and promise of these young men is highly encouraging4 ,they all go forth with enthusiasm for their work4 ,they all have fields for immediate labor4 ,it is quite confidently hoped that at least one of this class will decide to go to the ,mendi ,mission on the 8,dark ,continent40 ,but when we look about us and see the almost innumerable fields already white for the harvest1 the inquiry involuntarily comes4 ,what are these few 8among so many08 ,in accordance with her new motto1 ,talladega ,college is doing a grand work 8,pro ,christo et ,humanitate40 ,her facilities and prospects were never good as at present4 ,she was never so well deserving of support and patronage as now4 ,her location among the mountains of ,alabama is delightful4 ,the long blue ranges of mountains1 as seen in the distance from the ,college campus1 along with the bracing mountain air1 strongly remind one of ,new ,england4 ,the only institution of its grade for colored people in the ,state1 its constituency is simply immense4 ,with a farm of nearly two hundred acres1 her facilities are rare indeed for aiding young men to obtain an education1 who are disposed to help themselves4 ,she has an efficient corps of instructors1 enthusiastic in their work4 ,particularly is she fortunate in her new ,president1 under whose wise administration the ,college has assumed a new character and taken a new position in the ,state4 ,no one could listen to the earnest yet tender and eloquent words of counsel addressed to the graduating class by ,pres4 ,de ,forest on presenting the diplomas1 without the feeling that he is just the large-hearted1 scholarly4 ,christian gentleman who is needed in the place which he occupies4 ,but notwithstanding all this1 ,talladega has very pressing needs4 ,her accommodations for young men are altogether inadequate to the demand1 and such as she has are of a very indifferent character4 ,a donation of #ae1jjj from the ,stone ,estate1 however1 gives cheering prospects that during the coming year this sore need will be met4 ,but #aj1jjj more is needed just as much for furnishing the new dormitory1 improving the ,college grounds1 and making necessary repairs on 8,swayne ,hall10 which1 though originally costing #cj1jjj1 and a very stately building1 is literally going to ruin from lack of means to repair it4 ,these facts being known1 may it not reasonably be hoped that in the near future1 friends of humanity and of ,christian education may be found1 who will recognize this rare opportunity for investments1 and come to the rescue of a worthy and suffering ,college8 ,who will be the first8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,berea ,,college4 ,busy and ,varied ,commencement day brought together a crowd that for numbers and variety is seldom collected on such an occasion4 ,the gathering began early in the day4 ,fine buggies and carriages came filled with people1 and with them were wheeled vehicles of almost every variety of construction and in almost every stage of decay4 ,but the larger part of the crowd came on horseback in true ,kentucky style1 frequently two1 and in some cases three persons riding on the same animal4 ,the ,college campus comprises many acres1 covered quite uniformly with a fine growth of large trees4 ,on the day before1 ,i had noticed little slats nailed on these trees1 and their use was explained to-day by the horses hitched to them4 ,there must have been #hjj or #ijj horses on the campus4 ,the audience numbered probably #a1hjj or #b1jjj persons of both sexes1 both colors1 and of every stage in social position4 ,i judged that two-thirds were of the white race1 representing the well-to-do classes as also the poorer farmers from the mountains4 ,the dresses were not uniform in style1 nor always after the most recent fashion plates4 ,i noticed many old-fashioned sun-bonnets on the heads of the colored women4 ,there was a full supply of babies in the audience1 with the usual evidence of good lungs and voices--the essentials for future public speakers4 ,i particularly noticed that the white babies carried off on this day the palm in this incipient oratory1 yet ,i drew no inference as to the future4 ,the assemblage gathered in the ,tabernacle1 a roughly built structure somewhat in the style of the tabernacles at ,martha's ,vineyard and other watering places1 though1 of course1 less expensive4 ,the public exercises of the forenoon were very creditable to the pupils as well as their teachers in the essays and speeches4 ,the range of topics was wider than is usual in our institutions in the ,south1 and with less reference to the peculiar position and struggles of the colored race4 ,this was easily explained by the fact that about half the pupils are white4 ,the afternoon was occupied with addresses by ,rev4 ,j4 ,a4 ,r4 ,rogers1 ,secretary ,strieby1 ,pres4 ,fairchild1 of ,oberlin1 and two colored ministers of the vicinity4 ,the previous evening was taken up with a stirring address in the chapel by a ,kentucky gentleman of prominent position1 the son of a former slave-holder4 ,it was in hearty sympathy with the work in ,berea ,college1 and concluded with some very timely and practical advice to the colored people1 which they heartily applauded4 ,berea ,college is doing1 as may be seen1 a peculiar work4 ,no institution in the nation approaches it in uniting the two races in the same school4 ,as a pioneer in the breaking down of caste prejudice1 it has no rival2 nor is this purchased by lowering the one race at the expense of the other1 nor by any approach to the blending of the races in marriage4 ,it is simply a quiet1 unpretentious and practical working out of the brotherhood of man in educational and religious co-operation4 ,the pioneers and principal workers in founding and carrying forward this noble ,christian enterprise were present--,john ,g4 ,fee1 ,j4 ,a4 ,r4 ,rogers1 ,e4 ,h4 ,fairchild1 and others4 ,it is seldom that men live to see with their own eyes so great a revolution as that which ,berea witnessed in the contrast of this ,commencement day with the dark days of persecution1 banishment and danger4 ,tales were told me at quiet tea-tables1 of times of trial and deliverance1 that moved the heart over scenes that occurred not in old historic times1 but on spots within eye-glance1 and participated in by the narrators4 ,berea ,college is well equipped with buildings and a good corps of teachers4 ,the ,ladies' ,hall is modeled after1 and meet other wants1 and while another edifice could be well used1 yet ,berea's great need now is endowment2 and to those who have the means1 and are looking for a place to use it for the nation's welfare and the advancement of the ,redeemer's kingdom1 we can safely and unhesitatingly turn their attention to this worthy and growing institution4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tougaloo ,,university4 ,african a fresh sense of the importance of our work in its entirety1 and a special interest in ,tougaloo4 ,this institution1 in the centre of the great cotton ,state1 where the black soil seems the natural home of the black man1 has a field as large1 as needy and as hopeful as can well be desired4 ,from ,marion1 ,ala41 at the east1 to far beyond the ,mississippi on the west1 north from ,new ,orleans and to be done6 ,tougaloo is seven miles from ,jackson1 the ,state capital1 on the railway from ,new ,orleans northward1 having a location of wonderful beauty1 and advantages peculiar to itself4 ,the farm of five hundred acres is now under good cultivation4 ,the facilities for marketing produce are good1 and under judicious management it is believed the work of students may do much towards paying their expenses4 ,the mansion house1 built with great taste and care by a planter who was never to occupy it1 crowns a gentle slope2 while in front is a native grove1 or forest1 of as weird-like and enchanting beauty as can well be found on this rounded earth4 ,the oaks are of the giant order1 almost colossal in their proportions1 while from the great arms hang abundant tassels of ,spanish moss4 ,here1 on ,june #c;d1 under this witchery of shade1 on improvised seats1 the exercises of ,commencement were held4 ,horses1 mules1 and vehicles of all kinds1 at an early hour1 were hitched under the massing themselves near the platform4 ,seven young men1 after the ordeal of a searching examination1 if ,i may judge from the little ,i was in time to hear1 pronounced their orations and received their diplomas4 ,the addresses of the graduates were thoughtful1 full of moral earnestness1 well delivered and well received by the great audience1 among whom were representatives of the clergy at ,jackson1 the ,board of ,trustees1 and the ,superintendent of ,education4 ,several of these visitors added words of hearty and well-deserved commendation4 ,the impress of the instructors was manifest throughout the exercises4 ,this thought pervaded all the speeches3 there is work to be done1 and we wish to have a hand in it4 ,back of the stage1 as the class motto1 hung the old1 but not outworn1 8,labor omnia vincit40 ,the motto suggested the theme of the first speaker4 ,the address in the afternoon was on 8,the field and the victories of work10 and idleness had no mercy that day4 ,apparently1 there is not much of it about the institution4 ,under the direction of the ,principal1 ,rev4 ,g4 ,s4 ,pope1 a man of long experience in this ,southern field1 singularly fitted for his post and well sustained by earnest co-laborers1 both in-door and out-door industries have been greatly promoted4 ,the farm and garden are beginning to show what good husbandry can do4 ,blooded cattle are taking the place of the native lean kine2 improved groves are disclosing their richness2 while the garden not only supplies the large family at the ,university1 but is affording some surplus for others4 ,strawberries from nearly an acre of land have been picked this year1 and largely sent to ,chicago4 ,this industry promises well1 and will be increased in the future4 ,the needs of ,tougaloo are as apparent as its present usefulness4 ,besides the mansion and the out-buildings1 many of which are old1 there is a chapel with a second story containing rooms for young men1 and also a boarding hall1 with dormitories for young women above4 ,these three principal buildings are of wood1 the mansion house occupying the centre4 ,these accommodations are far too small4 ,to meet a present necessity1 a rough barrack has been put up1 giving nine additional rooms4 ,the attendance during the past year has been about two hundred1 and nearly all have been boarders in the family4 ,increase the accommodations and the attendance might be doubled at once2 but what would a school of four hundred be among the tens of thousands in this great ,state who are hungering for education8 ,at mid-winter a work of grace pervaded the school1 and not far from thirty1 it was thought1 of these pupils became ,christ's disciples1 and they go forth with new purposes4 ,the influences for good from ,tougaloo are not easily computed2 its grand possibilities reach out towards the infinite4 ,it seems strange to us who are on the ground1 glad to man these out-posts and give what we have of life and vigor to the work1 that needed supplies are not forthcoming4 ,give us adequate appliances1 and we can greatly multiply our usefulness4 ,we wish to be re-inforced1 not relieved4 ,our commissariat is insufficient4 ,we are glad to give ourselves to this work1 but we need supplies4 ,and we cannot think that life is cheaper than lucre2 that men at the rear can afford to neglect those who are allowed the very large audience4 ,on the rostrum beside the speaker were clergymen of three different denominations4 ,at #c ,p4 ,m4 the audience again assembled1 and was addressed by several of our former students1 who have been engaged during the present year in teaching4 ,the annual exhibition took place in the evening1 and long before the hour of commencing arrived1 our large hall1 7which was tastefully decorated with wreaths and flags for the occasion17 was crowded to its utmost capacity1 so that we could hardly make our way to the rostrum4 ,by competent judges1 the declamations were pronounced superior to any heard on former occasions of a similar character1 and not inferior to many exercises presented in regular college commencements4 ,the school has been larger this year than ever before1 and it has been difficult for us to accommodate all who have applied for admission4 ,we have had much for which to be thankful during the past year connected with this ,institute2 but let either to make 8a meeting40 ,during the summer1 generous friends contributed a good supply of clothing1 which was bestowed only on temperate persons4 ,this caused a good deal of complaint and some ill-will2 but we insisted that articles contributed by industrious1 temperate persons1 many of whom were in straitened circumstances1 should not be given to the intemperate or unworthy4 ,i am glad to report that ,i found in all #afj persons1 old and young1 whom ,i judged worthy4 ,we succeeded in making temperance respectable in clean clothes4 ,our ,band of ,hope had been organized five years1 but was not yet really a power4 ,we now clothed our members1 overhauled our books1 expelled the unworthy1 elected new officers1 and went ahead4 ,for a few weeks1 we spent all our time in trying those who had broken their pledges4 ,we also passed laws that members might be brought to trial for anything dishonorable to the ,band1 and that all on trial must stand on the platform during trial4 ,so each ,sabbath every member is asked1 8,have you broken your pledge1 and do you know any one who has80 ,they were shown the evil of having broken ,god's holy law1 the guilt and danger of sin1 their own personal responsibility to ,god and need of a ,saviour1 the dying love of ,christ1 ,his willingness to forgive and power to save1 and they were especially encouraged to trust ,him for strength to overcome every sin4 ,the fact that they were 8sinners before the ,lord exceedingly0 met them at every turn1 but was enforced so lovingly that a closer bond drew all together as one4 ,no gloomy views of religion were inculcated1 but the ,christian life was placed before them as something to be longed for and striven after4 ,they were often called aside by themselves1 perhaps for discipline1 perhaps to be commended for good behavior1 and then personal faith in ,christ was explained to them1 often with prayer4 ,we saw the signs of a mighty work at hand in their endeavors to leave off all sin1 the evident desire to know and do the right1 and the almost breathless attention when religious subjects were spoken of4 ,some meetings were held especially for those who desired to become ,christians4 ,meanwhile1 the ,christian people were appealed to over and over again4 ,in fact1 our main teaching this year has been 8,bring forth fruits1 meet for repentance40 ,sin has been rebuked1 publicly and privately1 the ,lord's people have been urged to deeper consecration1 and shown that if they brought their little ones to the ,lord in faith1 ,he would receive them4 ,on the first ,sabbath in ,february we had our ,sixth ,temperance ,anniversary4 ,the children fairly astonished everybody by their enthusiasm and ability4 ,the ,band then made its reputation1 and the number has since been increased from #ij to #aaf1 and we are glad to say1 most of the new members are grown people1 who have joined under full conviction of the usefulness of our ,band1 and of their own duty to it and themselves4 ,the drill and excitement attendant upon the anniversary having passed away1 the minds of the scholars were free to think again4 ,they could not study or play1 and some would be often in tears in school time4 ,we were careful not to encourage any sudden hopes which might prove false4 ,the work was evidently of the ,spirit1 who was sure to finish it4 ,so we allowed time in each case to settle the great question4 ,fourteen in all believed during the week4 ,some were forbidden to pray at home4 ,when they came to school they might go out in the woods to pray1 and not get punished1 so they went home too happy to care for whippings4 ,in time the work reached the grown people in the neighborhood1 and nightly meetings were held for weeks4 ,our own people were quiet enough4 ,we had a little confusion from other churches represented1 but nothing serious4 ,the number1 hopefully converted on the first of ,march1 was #ca4 ,twelve have been added since1 and still there are seekers4 ,i am glad to say that every one1 so far as ,i know1 still holds out well4 ,as the people think that to omit washing feet at the communion would endanger their title to heaven1 we can form no church4 ,the ,band of ,hope is practically our church1 with one thing in its favor--we have #ajj more members than we could have in a church4 ,almost everybody around belongs to it1 except some of the old people1 and they are coming4 ,our members are bound by voluntary covenant4 ,christ is the corner-stone1 and obedience to ,him the standard by which all are judged4 ,we warn1 exhort1 discipline and expel according to ,bible rules1 and draw sanction from it for all proceedings4 ,there are only seven unconverted members1 old enough to know themselves1 and they are under conviction4 ,we lack only the name and ordinances of a church4 ,it is most pleasant to see the evident affection shown by the young towards the teacher1 and our theological student1 ,brother ,scott1 on whom a large share of the work has fallen1 and who1 if he can be assisted to an education1 bids fair to be a power in the land4 ,the children come early and stay late2 they crowd around us1 and do all they can to please us4 ,they have the freedom of the house1 but we never miss even a button4 ,such a school full of honest1 truthful1 obedient and affectionate children is rare anywhere4 ,what shall be in ,florence for the last two years has been comparatively a new one4 ,the exodus of the colony from here not only took from the town some of the best citizens1 but it robbed our church of its strength1 both in a temporal and spiritual sense1 leaving behind the weakest spiritually and the poorest financially4 ,my first endeavor was to impress upon the people in their discouraged condition1 the necessity of having faith in ,god4 ,since that time the church has grown in religious life and character2 members have been added to it such1 ,i hope1 as shall be saved4 ,we have had a revival which served as a great quickening influence1 though there were not the number of conversions we had hoped for4 ,within these two years1 we have built a beautiful house of worship1 which helps greatly as an attraction to our service2 as also does our organ1 sent by friends1 being the only organ in the colored churches4 ,the ,sunday-school has grown in interest and numbers1 and has been able to pay for its lesson papers this year4 ,the school has been built up almost entirely out of new material4 ,my wife and self have taught a day-school in connection with the church-work1 which has given strength to the church4 ,outside of the primary and intermediate classes1 we have a class in ,united ,states history1 one in ,english composition1 and one in algebra4 ,up to this time forty-six scholars have been enrolled4 ,last year we began with three scholars1 closing with thirty-five4 ,we have had quite a number of applications for boarding scholars1 but had no accommodation for such1 with the exception of one girl whom we felt almost bound to take4 ,some of the others found places with difficulty1 because they wanted to go to the ,congregational school 7so-called1 while the public is called the ,methodist school74 ,strange to say1 in this community the country people are more able to sustain a 8pay-school0 than are those in town4 ,but there is a reason for it3 wages are very low1 and it really takes what is needed for their absolute wants to pay dollar a month1 particularly if a family numbers six or seven1 which is really the case in my parish4 ,a woman's wages average from four to five dollars a month4 ,i sigh1 and wonder how these poor people ever will rise4 ,the ,christian people who give so liberally1 and those who are intrusted with the responsibility of this work1 do not know the difficulties and trying circumstances under which ,congregationalism has grown1 and is growing1 in some parts of the ,south4 ,past experience has taught that tardiness in the appropriation of ample facilities for the work in some fields has caused the loss of rich results4 ,if those who have gone to ,kansas had seen the present condition of the church1 ,i believe it would have been a great check upon their going1 although there were other reasons which helped to drive them from the ,south aside from a lack of proper facilities for the education of their children4 ,since the dedication of the church1 ,i have been anxious that our lot should be inclosed1 and on ,april #ith we gave an entertainment whose results surpassed our most sanguine expectations1 as we made #fd above expenses4 ,we have put up a neat fence in front1 well painted1 which improves the looks of the church1 and have ordered lumber for the other sides of the lot1 and by next week the whole pillar in our ,oakland work4 ,these losses at the points already occupied1 suggest one way in which ,god1 taking the matter into his own hands1 is sending the ,gospel to the ,chinese in the mines4 ,they afford a partial solution of the problem before us4 ,a portion of our scattered seed is made to fall upon those moral wildernesses4 ,we follow these brethren with our prayers2 and ,i have ventured to pledge to them our practical co-operation if they should settle in any place where a hopeful missionary work could be begun4 ,but a hopeful work of this sort1 anywhere in the mines1 could scarcely be conceived of but for faith4 ,the difficulties are unique1 and are very great4 ,our ,home ,missionary ,society finds no other service so fraught with discouragements1 as that in these regions4 ,the toil required is very hard1 and the returns are very scanty4 ,some churches have been thrifty1 and one or two are thrifty still2 but outside a less number of points than you could count on the fingers of one hand1 they are either dead or perpetually dying2 preserved from utter extinction only by persistent pastoral service1 sustained mainly by missionary aid4 ,but the difficulties encountered in such work among our own people1 will be greatly enhanced in labor among the ,chinese4 ,miners are always migratory1 but the ,chinese miners most of all2 and migration tends to barbarism1 among the ,chinese most of all4 ,miners depend upon luck4 ,there is no possibility of knowing what there is in a piece of ground till you have worked it through1 and gotten it out4 ,a single day may show your season's work to be a success1 or may doom it as a failure1 and what that day will disclose no sagacity will enable you beforehand to determine4 ,such occupations nurse the gambling spirit1 favor spendthrift habits1 and tend almost irresistibly to poverty4 ,and this is specially true of the ,chinese4 ,in certain seasons of the year1 miners are apt to be waiting and idle2 in others1 when the golden harvest must be gathered1 if at all1 working to excess2 and in either case1 the moral effect is evil1 not less so with ,chinese than others4 ,american miners1 with a few noble exceptions1 seem to know little about the ,christian ,sabbath4 ,it used to be1 and in some parts of ,california it still is1 the day for cleaning-up1 for coming to the central village for trading1 for gambling1 for getting drunk2 but even this distinction in the more prominent mining districts is passing away1 and the wheels of labor roll remorselessly over the laborer's best boon1 the weekly day of sacred rest4 ,how much less can we hope for the help of ,sabbaths in reaching with the ,gospel the ,chinese8 ,and yet1 there they are1 by the hundreds and the thousands1 precious souls1 bought with the blood of ,jesus4 ,must we let them die1 without a single hand stretched out1 a single voice uplifted for their rescue8 ,the mission at ,oroville was our first attempt to deal with this problem of work among the ,chinese miners4 ,it was begun1 so far as downright and determined effort was concerned1 ,february #ast1 and continued till ,june #ast4 ,the school is closed during the hot months1 but will be resumed1 ,i trust1 about ,october #ast4 ,in some respects it has fulfilled our hopes1 and abundantly repaid our somewhat large expenditures4 ,six ,chinese are reported as converted1 but we did not reach many of the miners through the school1 as such4 ,they would come to hear ,lee ,haim or ,lem ,chung preach1 thronging the little mission house sometimes1 and listening to the ,gospel1 as1 indeed1 news1 good news possibly1 with eyes fixed and ears and even mouths wide open1 to receive the words4 ,but coming and going1 here to-day to trade at the temple for luck and at the stores for 8grub10 to-morrow gone we know not where1 we could learn but little of the work that good news wrought within their hearts4 ,it is evident1 however1 that if we are to reach our ,chinese mining population it must be mainly through evangelistic service--a mission school at some central point1 as a headquarters1 and a well-trained helper to go forth from it1 preaching here and there on ,sundays and on week days1 in the cabins or on the streets1 wherever he can induce his countrymen to lend him a listening ear4 ,and in order to this1 we ought to be training helpers by the dozen where now we are training one2 not by sending them to ,academies or opening for them a ,theological ,seminary1 but by putting them to work and letting them learn to preach by preaching4 ,this was ,wesley's method for those half heathen among whom his victories were gained in ,england1 and ,i am persuaded that it is the beat method for these whole heathen for whom our struggle is going on to-day4 ,do not educate the helpers up out of the range of easy sympathy with those from whom they spring and among whom they go1 but let teaching and working1 lesson and practice1 go hand in hand4 ,i am eager to do more of this next year than we have ever done4 ,i am greatly encouraged respecting it1 by the results vouchsafed to us already2 but how to do it aright1 with the resources now at
