held at ,raleigh1 and to the encouragement shown them by the whites1 and urges it as an imperative duty that full and equal justice shall be done the blacks1 and that they shall not be left to work out their destiny unaided4 ,he favors greater provision for public schools1 and recommends that the school tax shall be #b4e mills on the dollar4 99 99 99 99 99 ,that was quite a love feast held in the ,opera ,house1 ,lynchburg1 ,va41 a few weeks since1 when local politicians1 ,united ,states officials and ,northern business men of the city united1 regardless of party prejudices1 in tendering a supper to capitalists from ,pittsburgh1 and all joined in applauding the name of ,blaine1 from whom a telegram was received during the evening1 8until the rafters rang again40 99 99 99 99 99 ,whatever opinion we may form as to the justice of the charges made by ,senator ,dawes or the sufficiency of ,secretary ,schurz's reply1 we can and do rejoice that they seem to vie with each other in demanding justice for the ,poncas1 and we would commend not alone to the ,massachusetts ,senator1 but to all the members of ,congress1 the appeal of the ,secretary of the ,interior1 and express the conviction that the ,american people will not hold them guiltless of a large share of the guilt incurred in that matter1 if they fail1 before adjournment1 to carry out the recommendations of the ,president4 ,mr4 ,schurz concludes his letter to ,senator ,dawes as follows3 8,permit me now to make an appeal for the ,poncas to you1 ,senator4 ,let these ,indians at last have rest4 ,recognize their rights by giving them the indemnity they justly asked for and which ,i asked for them years ago4 ,let them quietly go about their farms and improve their homes and send their children to school1 undisturbed by further agitation4 ,that is the best service you can render them4 ,they would probably be in a better condition already had that agitation never reached them40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,senator ,,brown ,,on ,,the the importance of education in the following words3 8,i have the educational question very much at heart4 ,disguise it as you may1 the ,new ,england ,states1 with their schools and universities1 have dictated laws to this continent4 ,they have sent ,new ,england ideas all over the ,west1 and they dominate there4 ,look at ,prussia1 that little ,empire over which ,napoleon rushed and almost obliterated4 ,hardly a generation passed before it had in turn humbled ,france and taken the power from its ,empire4 ,the bright-eyed boys in your mountains and wire-grass may represent you nobly before the world if you educate them4 ,we must also educate the colored race1 and they ought to be educated for the benefit of the ,union1 and by the friends of the ,union4 ,i would devote the proceeds of the public lands to this purpose on a basis of illiteracy4 ,the colored people are citizens1 and we must do them justice4 ,let us give them every legal right4 ,social rights will take care of themselves40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,overture ,,to ,,the ,,national ,,council4 ,it is felt by many of our missionaries ,south that their work would be facilitated by a creed1 prepared under direction of the ,national ,council1 suited to the average intelligence of the ,freedmen who apply for admission to our new churches4 ,to this end1 therefore1 the ,central ,south ,conference1 at its recent meeting in ,memphis1 drew up an overture setting forth the reasons why such creed should be provided1 and presented it to the ,council at ,st4 ,louis4 ,after preliminary statements1 the overture adds3 8,our eight colleges and our two score normal and high schools1 with their more than #h1jjj students1 and these1 with their #aej1jjj pupils in primary schools1 where they teach1 are rapidly preparing the material out of which churches of our faith and polity will be developed4 8,these children of nature1 with their ready faith but rude culture1 coming into the inheritance of this ,new ,testament way of the churches1 need the #8sincere milk of the word'--a declaration of doctrine that shall not be in the nomenclature nor in the philosophy of a past age1 but in the language and after the spirit of our improved ,new ,england theology4 ,they need a form of sound words such as that when they have once learned it they will not need to be taught over again what it does not mean in spite of its phraseology4 8,as a duty of brotherly love and of honest recompense we owe them the best things we have to give in the way of the freshest and ripest statement of the ideas and doctrines which have leavened the ,east and the ,west1 and are now setting the ,south in foment40 ,we trust the ,committee appointed by the ,council to formulate a statement of doctrine will meet the want4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mixed ,,schools4 ,opposition to mixed schools in the ,south is not confined to the white race4 ,intelligent colored people see that these mean no opportunity for them as teachers1 at least for some years to come4 ,those who would be willing to wield the birchen rod over colored children are as yet largely in excess of those who would consent to have a colored teacher wield it over them4 ,mixed schools are needed in all the sparsely settled neighborhoods1 which includes1 of course1 all the country outside of the larger villages1 as none other can be effectively maintained4 ,none others can be harmonized with the democratic ideas upon which our institutions are based1 and it is safe to say that anything which is favored by every public and private interest1 and is opposed only by prejudice1 will in the end gain the day4 ,victories are being won with such rapidity that we can afford to wait patiently for this one1 which when gained will prove the ,appomattox of this war4 ,almost all that can be gained for the negro by legislation has been accomplished2 to overcome prejudices which wrong and hinder him1 will now depend largely upon himself4 ,the gratifying fact1 attested by prominent men all over the ,south1 is that he is playing his part with commendable manliness1 and is gaining what will never be long withheld from those who deserve it--the respect of his white neighbors4 ,it would be well for those who complain of the slow progress made for better feelings and sentiments among the ,southern whites in regard to the negroes1 and their manifest unwillingness to accord to them their rights1 quietly to digest a recent letter from the ,superintendent of ,schools in ,cambridge1 ,mass41 who explains that he has not employed properly qualified colored teachers in that city1 simply because there is so much color prejudice among the people that he deems it inexpedient to do so4 ,we know of a young colored woman1 a graduate of the high-school of the town in which she lives1 admitted by all parties to be the best scholar of her class1 and one of the best ever graduated from the school1 who cannot find employment in the profession for which she has so ably qualified herself1 only because she has a trace of negro blood in her veins4 ,when ,massachusetts and ,rhode ,island1 and we may as well include the whole of ,new ,england1 have reached and occupied sufficiently long to feel comfortable upon it1 the ground which they insist the ,south ought to take at one bound1 the ,south may be more favorably affected by their preaching of equal rights4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,exceptions ,,and ,,the ,,rule4 ,there may be exceptions which1 after all1 confirm the rule to which they do not wholly conform1 but to say that it is by exceptions the rule is to be proven1 is to betray a blind adhesion to maxims whose claim to credence is their antiquity alone4 ,a partial and hasty generalization from two or three particulars suffices for the enunciation of a general law applicable to all cases4 ,the declaration of a more careful investigator that a number of particular facts are not harmonious with the law as enunciated is met1 not with a revision of the law1 but with the assertion that exceptions do not invalidate1 but prove the rule4 ,a naturalist in the tropics describes water as being under all circumstances a fluid4 ,the solid block of ice which drifts for the first time into his field of observation he will not accept as disproving his doctrine1 but as being the exception necessary to confirm it4 ,it becomes a matter of interest to know in what way exceptions do confirm what they seemingly disprove1 and how many maybe admitted before we shall revise our classifications and re-state our general rule1 because false in its old form4 ,unquestionably an indisputable exception proves at least that the rule is not universal1 and suggests that there may be a thousand more facts out of harmony with it4 ,anglo-,saxon prejudice and conceit have laid it down as a general rule1 a law of race1 that the negro is only a somewhat superior grade of monkey1 incapable of any high degree of intellectual development2 that the only good ,indian is a dead ,indian1 and the best use he can be put to is to make a target of him for the training of our soldiers in musket firing4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association has been engaged for the past score of years in developing exceptions to these dicta1 and it is time to raise the question seriously whether these only prove the rule or demand its revision6 ,we respectfully submit that the experiments made show a large number of exceptions2 in fact1 the number has been numerous exactly in proportion to the largeness of our opportunities and facilities for developing them4 ,a serious doubt ought by this time to take possession of the public mind whether #cb1jjj1jjj spent in ,indian wars during the past dozen years is not rather expensive target practice1 and whether the results shown by those who1 under great disadvantages1 have been attempting to civilize and ,christianize the ,indians1 are not of such character as to demand most emphatically that our method of dealing with them shall be changed4 ,we also challenge attention to the results of our educational experiments in the ,south1 as demanding in all fairness that they shall be made on a national scale1 and not simply by the private enterprise of philanthropists4 ,it is time the old answer of ignorance and stupid imbecility that exceptions only prove the rule should be thrown to the dogs1 and we should as a nation convert the dangerous elements with which we have so wickedly and foolishly dealt into sources of national power and safety4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,conversion ,,versus ,,education4 ,it was a wild and weird scene that we looked down upon from the gallery of one of the prominent colored churches in a ,southern city a few months since4 ,the preacher had1 at #aj o'clock1 p4 m41 finished his part of the service1 having preached an excellent and very simple sermon1 in which there was nothing calculated to produce the violent scenes which followed1 and having come down from the pulpit1 the brethren and sisters took the meeting under their own management4 ,up to this time it had been as quiet and decorous as a deacons' meeting in ,new ,england4 ,a stentorian 8son of thunder0 now led the singing1 and a general movement of the whole assembly at once began4 ,soon1 nearly a hundred 8seekers0 were kneeling at the 8mourners' bench10 a row of seats extending across the church1 in all stages of physical and spiritual abasement4 ,prayer and song followed each other in rapid and boisterous succession1 while the congregation of believers marched and counter-marched1 each one discharging at once his duty and a volley of counsel or encouragement to the mourners as he passed along the line4 ,black was the ground and prevailing color4 ,the lights were hardly sufficient to resolve this nebulous blackness into faces1 black sun-bonnets of the sisters1 and black-coated forms of the brethren moving to and fro through the room1 while the singers sang1 the exhorters exhorted1 the mourners mourned in dismal howls1 and the shouters shouted and leaped in ecstatic joy4 ,now and then1 one would come to the surface of all this uproar1 to tell what voices he had heard1 what visions he had seen1 what dreams he had dreamed1 and receive the assurance from the minister3 8,i have no more doubt that he has got religion1 than ,i have of my own existence10 which would be the signal for a general shout of 8glory to ,god60 that made the preceding bedlam seem tame1 and gave renewed impetus to the marchings and songs and prayers4 ,these meetings had been in nightly session for weeks1 and continued for weeks afterward1 prolonged often1 as on this night1 until #b o'clock in the morning4 ,as we left1 about midnight1 our driver1 an intelligent negro1 said3 8,you are going away too early4 ,things will get pretty warm after awhile4 ',ligion strikes a nigger first in the foot and then works up2 it is just beginning to work1 it will be lively after awhile20 of which there could not be much doubt4 ,one of our missionaries1 some time since1 was applied to by a colored woman for admission to the church4 ,at her examination before the committee1 she had a wonderful dream to tell as proof of her conversion4 ,the committee1 not deeming it sufficient evidence1 refused her application4 ,she went immediately to one of the old ministers1 and the day of her immersion was duly celebrated by a great gathering1 of which she was the heroine4 ,as she clambered up the bank of the river1 shouting aloud1 she suddenly encountered one of the deacons whose church had refused her admission4 ,giving a sudden pause to her religious fervor1 she thrust her clenched hand into his face1 exclaiming3 8,there1 ,i am baptized10 and followed up with imprecations upon himself1 pastor1 and church1 which were1 to say the least1 not saintly1 and then resumed her shout of glory6 ,to one who has seen the negro often under religious excitement1 it is evident that he seeks it as many men do intoxication1 for the mere pleasurable excitement2 he neither feels nor hears1 nor does he know of reasons for being a better man morally because of his religion2 if it only makes him happier1 it meets his need1 and the only demand he has to make of it4 ,this is a just idea of what conversion was under the old-style minister among the negroes4 ,of course1 there were many among them who preached a purer ,gospel1 and sought renewed spiritual lives among their people1 especially before emancipation1 but with freedom came the hope of political or other power1 which could be gained most easily by the preacher1 and many sought and secured such positions who were utterly unscrupulous as well as ignorant4 ,it is such a ministry as this which1 more than anything else1 opposes to-day our work among the ,freedmen4 ,dr4 ,sears stated last spring1 in his address at the ,school ,superintendents' ,convention1 that he knew of the presence of one trained normal teacher in a village to necessitate the dismissal of seven old-fashioned teachers4 ,contrast and comparison revealed sad deficiencies before unknown1 and the committee was forced to get rid of the poor teachers4 ,and so it is chiefly by what we compel others to do1 that we are to estimate the value of our intelligent and largely undenominational work in the ,south4 ,the ,freedmen are beginning to see that religion is something different from dreaming dreams or seeing visions1 or shouting1 or anything of the kind2 that it means honest1 pure1 industrious lives1 inspired and controlled by the spirit of ,jesus ,christ4 ,education is securing something better than such conversions1 in fact is making them impossible with the new generation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,inconsiderate ,,giving4 ,we deem it inaccurate to say 8inconsiderate charity10 for such giving is not charitable giving4 8,to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not1 to him it is sin40 ,the obligation is as imperative that we shall give intelligently as that we shall give at all4 ,the intolerable tramp nuisance with which we have been so grievously afflicted1 was nourished and built up by the illy considered sentiment which found expression in the declaration of a well-known minister1 who said he would refuse to give anything to the cause of missions before he would refuse a gift to the poor fellow who asked at his door for help1 and in the custom of a good woman of wealth1 who bought a set of crockery for tramps1 and always kept a large coffee-pot full of that delightful beverage on the stove ready for the use of her frequent guests1 a dozen of whom she has been known to feed in one day4 ,there can be no doubt that a ready and full supply of this kind will develop an almost infinite demand4 ,a lady1 prominent and well-known in ,new ,york city1 whose habit was never to give to any one asking at the door1 but to take the address of the applicant and investigate the case1 said that in seventeen years' experience she had never found a single deserving one among the many who had so applied2 in every case a fictitious address had been given4 ,we can do no safe and really charitable work until such work is intelligently organized1 so that deserving cases are supplied with just the kind of aid needed1 and fictitious and unworthy ones are exposed and punished4 ,we must know1 either by ourselves or accredited and trusted agents1 what we are doing if we are to benefit rather than curse our fellows by our so-called charities4 ,the friends of the negro are in danger constantly of being imposed upon by impostors1 who rob the cause they desire to promote of much-needed funds4 ,it is very easy for one who comes soliciting aid for a prospective college or church to secure testimonials that said institution is greatly needed1 and that the solicitor is seeking money for a most important purpose4 ,it is not necessary to show1 which is by no means the case1 that all who come from the ,south asking aid for such causes are frauds1 in order to give weight to our words of caution4 ,many of these are attempting honestly a most important work1 and ought to have sympathy and material aid1 but the individual to whom application is made has neither time nor facilities for making the proper investigations to establish this fact4 ,true1 the applicant has testimonials1 but they need investigation no less than the applicant himself4 ,we know of several cases where funds have been contributed1 and have been expended in the erection and maintenance of schools1 which are doing honest and most valuable work1 concerning which nothing but praise should be spoken1 and yet nothing but the life of one man stands between this present use of these funds and an utter perversion of them4 ,the school property is the personal property of the individual who procured the funds1 and at his death will of necessity pass into the hands of others1 who can do what they choose with it4 ,we know of one case where a wealthy man from ,new ,york1 spending the winter in the ,south1 became interested in a negro public school near his hotel4 ,he converted the rude building into a ,new ,england school-house1 supplied with first-class apparatus1 and took great satisfaction in what he had done for the poor negroes4 ,next year the negro school was transferred to another building1 and the whites made this one1 with its books1 globes1 and philosophical apparatus1 the foundation of a higher school for their own race4 ,we believe it best for the friends of negro education to work1 through some one of the various organizations which are doing this work1 who are in position to do it more wisely and efficiently than they could do it2 and would call attention to the following suggestions from a correspondent of the ,new ,york ,tribune1 as being wise and of urgent importance3 8,there are associations connected with nearly every religious denomination in the country1 to meet the great and terrible need of education among the millions of the emancipated and their children4 ,these associations are under the administration of the best and most sagacious business men in our communities1 and it is safe to say that the moneys committed to the custody of these associations are judiciously1 desirably and economically appropriated4 ,of one of these associations ,i have personal and familiar knowledge4 ,it has extensive colleges or universities in ,virginia1 ,tennessee1 ,georgia1 ,alabama1 ,louisiana1 ,mississippi and ,texas1 besides numerous schools scattered throughout the ,southern ,states4 ,nearly #cjj1jjj was expended by this association the past year1 almost exclusively in the interest of these people1 one excellent woman putting #aej1jjj in the treasury1 to be expended in making much needed additions to colleges so utterly thronged by applicants that they were compelled to turn numbers from their doors40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indian ,,problem4 ,,gen4 ,s4 ,c4 ,,armstrong4 ,the ,indian problem is upon us as never before4 ,the wrongs of the ,poncas1 both in themselves and as illustrating our country's mode of dealing with the red race for generations1 have touched and stirred the people4 ,the sum of six generations of slavery has been to the negro1 oppression1 offset by steady progress through it all1 and only injury to the white man4 ,the sum of six generations of ,indian treatment has been a succession of wrongs1 offset by little real advantage1 and the steady gain of the white man4 ,the negro acquired our language and ways1 and by becoming the industrial reliance of the ,south1 became1 even more than his master1 capable of taking care of himself4 ,we have destroyed the reliance of the ,indian1 his game1 and have put nothing in its place4 ,with all the justice and humanity intended in our annual outlay for the red race1 there is a pauperizing1 weakening tendency that is full of danger4 ,practically1 has the politician been any better guardian than the slave-holder8 ,the country is waking up to a sense of justice4 ,the shameful record of violated treaties and untold wrongs for the past hundred years is being brought out4 ,from the outraged negro1 for whom the country can now do nothing but help educate him1 and who1 indeed1 needs nothing but intelligence to fit him to hold his own1 our people are turning to the ,indian and demanding that ,government open before him the only way to manhood and citizenship--rights and education4 ,it must be done4 ,in the 8,century of ,dishonor10 just published by the well-known author1 8,h4 ,h410 she states that 8,to write in full the history of one of these ,indian communities1 of its forced migrations1 wars1 and miseries1 would fill a volume by itself40 ,as this shall be better realized1 a stronger public sentiment will be formed and felt4 ,other forces are at work4 ,the three hundred and fifty ,indian youth who have come voluntarily from the ,west1 many of them children of chiefs1 and entered the ,carlisle and ,hampton schools1 have already proved their capacity for mechanical and agricultural1 as well as for mental and religious improvements4 ,not but that this has already been abundantly shown2 but the work has been done at our doors2 the evidence is thrust upon us4 ,how many know that of the #bge1jjj ,indians believes in immortality2 he has a keen intellect2 he is a clear thinker2 he is brave1 fearless1 and until betrayed1 he is true to his plighted faith2 he has a passionate love for his children and counts it joy to die for his people4 ,our most terrible wars have been with this noblest type of ,indians and with those who have been the white man's friends40 ,nearly three years' experience at ,hampton has shown that the chief danger1 the death-rate1 while serious1 is not discouraging4 ,our #hj ,indian pupils are now in better health than ever before4 ,they need in bodily ailments careful1 prompt treatment2 with that there is little danger4 ,it is clear that the death-rate is not increased by transplanting them to the ,east4 ,is not the story of our last communion service which ,i sent to the ,,missionary last week evidence enough to stimulate ,christians to the greatest effort for this race8 ,i write this paper especially to urge upon the ,american ,missionary ,association and its friends some effort for ,indians in connection with their institutions for colored people4 ,the mingling of races at ,hampton has worked admirably4 ,our colored students increased in number last year by #cg in spite of the #gj ,indians for whom separate and special pecuniary provision was made by ,government and by friends4 ,bringing ,indians to negro schools is like putting raw recruits among old soldiers4 ,the former are pushed along by a thousand indirect helpful influences2 they are improved by contact with those always ahead of them in the march of civilization2 and the latter are ennobled by what they do for their needy brethren4 ,it works well2 such mingling will strengthen and not weaken your schools1 if ,hampton experience is safe to go by4 ,to make men of the savages on our frontier and to save their souls by putting them with the ex-slave of the country is a grand work1 if it has been called 8sensational40 ,why not take these twenty ,indian children that the ,indian department are ready to give you8 ,this would be safe2 then feel your way along4 ,let them study mornings and work afternoons1 and play ,saturdays4 ,we do so4 ,the labor is one of some delicacy and difficulty4 ,but the ,indian is like everybody else4 ,that's our experience4 ,treat him firmly1 fairly1 kindly2 give him no second-rate teacher2 he is keen and appreciative4 ,why not go ahead8 ,the presence of the ,spirit4 ,quite a number have already given good evidence that they have submitted to ,christ1 and several now are apparently not far from the kingdom of ,god4 ,we have a large quickened under the manifest presence of the ,spirit in connection with a series of meetings1 in which ,brother ,markham aided the pastor4 ,,chattanooga1 ,,tenn4--,it has been awfully wet1 muddy and cold all the month2 the like has not been experienced here for many years4 ,the great suffering among the poor for the want of food1 fuel1 clothing and shelter to keep them from the terribly cold weather1 was fearful4 ,it rained steadily through the week of prayer1 and we were able to have meeting only one night4 ,,nashville1 ,,tenn4--,during the present term1 a deep religious interest has obtained among the students in ,jubilee ,hall4 ,it began soon after the opening of the fall term4 ,new students1 especially1 seemed to be deeply interested in their own spiritual welfare1 and when the students have made a profession of their faith in ,christ1 and others are inquiring4 ,the day of prayer for colleges was a good one4 ,several of the students are doing good work among their people in this vicinity1 preaching where there is opportunity and holding prayer-meetings in private houses1 so far as they can without interference with their studies1 and with good effect both upon the her sister were working and saving their wages to buy a farm for their parents1 near the church and school4 ,her greatest trial now is that she will have to give up this cherished object of her life4 ,we read and prayed with her1 and commended her to him who healeth all our diseases4 ,it is sad to see the sick and dying in such uncomfortable hovels4 ,this young lady is an invalid in a log house4 ,in many places the daubing is out4 ,the floor is of rough plank1 with cracks between4 ,the joists are partly covered with loose plank1 while large spaces are not covered at all4 ,there is no window1 and the door is left open most of the time for light4 ,the room is about eighteen by twenty feet4 ,at one end is a fire-place1 which answers the double purpose of cooking the simple fare and heating me what an unpleasant vacation they had had1 so much so1 that he felt as if he could not stay1 but must come back to us4 ,the step-father was drunk continually1 and kept about him other drunken associates1 abused the mother1 and by his conduct so grieved the boys that they felt they could not endure it4 ,they went home in ,june and took charge of the farm4 ,they held a little prayer-meeting every ,wednesday evening and ,sunday morning with the mother and step-father4 ,they also went together to the house of a near neighbor--a terribly wicked man--and held a prayer-meeting with the family every ,sunday afternoon4 ,the story of the ,prodigal ,son was the means of the conversion of one of the brothers1 and some weeks after his conversion he came in to ask where it might be found in the ,bible1 saying1 8,i have been hunting for it for two weeks1 and can't find it40 ,he says now1 8,i often read the ,bible to my mother1 and explained to her that story of the ,prodigal ,son1 to the best of my knowledge40 ,during the summer the mother was converted1 afterward the step-father1 and then the neighbor for whom and with whom the boys had been praying4 ,his face was of joy as he told of the conversion of his mother1 who 8could not bear the thought of her boys going one way and she another10 and he exclaimed1 8,oh1 ,miss ,koons1 our home is a different place now60 ,both the boys were at work in the ,sabbath-school--one at home and the other some miles from home1 and neither one missed a ,sabbath from ,june to the time of their return to us in ,november4 ,i hardly need tell you that impassable mud1 were equally difficult beginnings1 and yet it is in these city alleys and in the bottoms and commons outside the city limits that the work is waiting--a harvest too great for the few laborers4 ,there were many ways1 ,i soon learned1 to make entrance to the homes of the people4 ,the halloo at the gate would immediately bring the loud 8come in10 and a simple excuse1 as a wish to warm or rest1 or to inquire where such a cabin might be1 would gain for me a ready welcome4 ,then1 with a few minutes' chatting and close observation1 it would be an easy matter to detect the special need there4 ,at first ,i chose for my visits only the cabins1 or1 in the parlance of the people1 the shanties1 but1 as my work has widened1 ,i have often learned of need and suffering in many a 8frame house10 or 8little brick40 ,indeed1 it seems as if the difference between those in the cabin and those in the frame house and the little brick lies here3 the former have never tried to get above their wretched poverty2 the latter have tried1 and1 with a measure of success1 still remain poor4 ,those in the cabins need everything--food and clothing primarily1 no doubt2 but of paramount importance are their other needs1 viz41 to be elevated from their sloth and indolence and licentiousness by the forces of education and religion4 ,those in the frame house and little brick need encouragement in the path already chosen4 ,i was asked to visit one day in a neat brick cottage which ,i should have passed many times with no suspicion of need within4 ,on entering1 the first thing that attracted my attention was that the walls and ceiling were entirely unfinished2 the walls were the bare bricks1 and overhead were the flooring beams1 and1 where the walls and ceiling met1 were wide open spaces for the wind to sift up from under the eaves4 ,the inmates were a colored woman1 unfitted for work by age and rheumatism1 and her daughter2 the daughter was her widowed mother's only dependence1 yet the poor girl was lying sick with pneumonia1 and had been two weeks without medical treatment4 ,they had no money1 but pride kept them reticent of their affairs4 ,to provide medicines1 and later1 little delicacies2 to visit the sick girl every day and sometimes twice a day was my care for three weeks4 ,she is now well again1 and they are independent4 ,i have made1 up to ,december #ca1 one hundred and twenty-five calls1 and have succeeded in relieving some suffering with gifts of fuel and food1 although the little accomplished in that direction is as one drop in the sea4 ,from barrels of clothing received from the ,north ,i have sold and given a great many garments2 have oftener sold1 because it seems always wiser1 although the prices may be ridiculously small4 ,this money helps me to purchase medicine for the many sick persons4 ,let me add here1 that with homeopathic remedies ,i have had most flattering success1 always preparing the medicines myself1 and carefully renewing them until the patients1 without exception so far1 are cured4 ,in addition to my visits1 ,i have tried to reach the women by means of cabin prayer-meetings1 and to help the girls and young women by the medium of sewing-schools4 ,i have two schools in successful operation in different parts of the city4 ,one numbers twenty pupils1 the other nearly forty4 ,we begin with prayer and short ,scripture reading1 and then with great eagerness the girls set about their sewing1 or lesson in cutting1 as the case may be4 ,when a garment is finished1 each girl purchases her own work for a dime or fifteen cents4 ,while those times1 came up through ,paris lecturing to the colored people4 ,he proposed a church that would accommodate all the ,christians1 and the result was the organization above named1 with a regular constitution and covenant4 ,its preamble reads thus3 8,we1 the ministers and members of different ,christian churches1 feeling greatly embarrassed in our former church relations1 and regarding those matters of difference which divided the churches to which we have belonged as being unimportant1 mischievous in their tendency1 and in discordance with the spirit of ,christianity1 do now1 on this alone with a beautiful simplicity and all legitimate authority4 ,how has the church gotten along8 ,why1 it ran up to a large membership4 ,it paid #aae in gold for a lot1 and built a church4 ,it branched out into the ,shiloh1 the ,new ,hope1 and the ,pattonville ,african ,congregational churches1 in neighborhoods about1 and these four became associated in a quarterly conference4 ,but1 as the propagandists came along1 they found in the walls of the mother church stones with old inscriptions4 ,baptists1 ,african ,m4 ,e41 ,campbellite1 ,northern ,m4 ,e41 and each pulled out his own and set up churches of those several sorts1 so that now the original church building is the shabbiest of the lot1 and the membership is only an average4 ,but still1 with a high standing for character1 with an educated minister1 and an educated teacher1 ,prof4 ,s4 ,w4 ,white1 with a new and more respectable site1 purchased1 with the old acre and a half to be sold1 and with some members of property 7two of them large farmers7 and of influence in the community1 they give promise of great usefulness1 promise of realizing the expectations of the martyr founder4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,communion ,,sunday ,,at ,,hampton4 ,,miss ,,isabel ,d4 ,,eustis4 ,many warm friends of ,hampton have come to see her on her gala days2 have crowded into the hall decorated with flags and flowers1 while the band played a welcome1 and her graduates waited to give to the audience the fruit of their three years' study and experience4 ,perhaps some of these would like to go with the quiet company who are walking to the little church in the ,soldiers' ,cemetery1 near the close of a bright day that has fallen in the midst of weeks of rain and storm1 and join in the simple communion service of the first ,sunday in the ,new ,year4 ,the afternoon sunlight slants in through the windows upon the plain walls and benches1 and lights up the dusky faces of the colored and ,indian students who fill the seats4 ,the simple service upon the communion table is the gift of the strong and loving woman1 who gave the best of her heart and brain to ,hampton at its start1 and who kept her connection with the church she helped to organize until she was called to the ,marriage ,supper of the ,lamb4 ,in the seats nearest the table are six colored and eight ,indian students who begin the ,new ,year by confessing ,christ as their ,saviour4 ,we ask ourselves1 as we notice their quiet and decorous manner1 if these can be some of the strange and uncouth people who came knocking at our doors two years ago1 and as we watch the sweet1 softening expressions stealing over their faces1 telling of reverent and gentle thoughts within1 we wonder still more if these are the very faces from which once it seemed impossible to win an answering smile4 ,the congregation rise and sing together in full1 sweet chorus1 as only a colored audience can1 8,my faith looks up to thee40 ,the minister reads the creed and covenant1 and then the ,indian scholars1 whose parents had1 perhaps1 hardly heard the name of ,christ1 come one by one to receive the rite of baptism4 ,as they kneel beside the font the minister says to each1 separately and calling him by name1 8,do you promise to take ,jesus ,christ as your ,saviour1 to love him and serve him8 ,do you promise80 and the emphatic ,indian assent and little ,annie's timid 8,yes1 sir10 are heard through the still church1 and those who wait to hear know that the heart's promise has gone with the lips4 ,ahuka 7,white ,wolf7 comes first for baptism4 ,as he stands there quiet and reverent1 a sudden memory of the first time we saw and knew him flashes across our minds4 ,we see again the school-room1 the day after the arrival of the new pupils4 ,they are seated in a semi-circle around a teacher1 who stands by a black-board on which some easy ,english words have been written3 8,stand up2 ,walk2 ,stop2 ,look up20 which she has been teaching the scholars to illustrate4 ,on the front seat at one end sits ,ahuka1 a somewhat alarming-looking pupil4 ,his thick1 shaggy1 black hair bangs down to his waist over the blanket which he holds wrapped tight about him1 while he casts now and then stealthy but keen glances from under his heavy eyebrows4 ,teacher debates for a few seconds whether to call on him for a recitation2 but concludes not to shirk1 and he comes to the board4 ,teacher points to the first word on the blackboard1 on the pronunciation of which she has been drilling the class1 and looks at the brave for a response4 ,brave looks at her1 then at the word1 back again1 more sharply at her1 says nothing4 ,teacher mustn't expect a response in a hurry1 keeps her pointer on the word and her eye on the brave4 ,brave continues to transfer his glance from the word to the teacher1 till suddenly1 whether in despair or rage she cannot tell1 he throws his head back1 bends forward and utters a prolonged howl4 ,teacher with difficulty restrains herself from a flight down the corridor1 and doesn't question why he is called 8the ,wolf40 ,it is no difficult task to picture him back in the wilds of ,dakota4 ,we think of him now3 his quiet and reverent manner2 the pleading look we have learned to know in the once defiant1 savage eyes1 and we pray that as he is laying aside all that was the pride and pleasure of his savage strength he may grow 7slowly he must1 but certainly he shall7 into the beauty and power and glory of a ,christian manhood4 ,harry ,brown1 ,chief ,white ,horse's manly little son1 stands by the font now4 ,we came near making a bad mistake about ,harry4 ,the day that the minister had appointed to talk to the scholars who were to unite with the church was a crisp winter one1 and the creek was covered with glittering one previously appointed may communicate intelligence of ,home ,mission work1 while others sew4 ,in other places the old cent society to which our grandmothers belonged is available as the channel for communication of intelligence as to ,home ,mission work may be the only objects of the society4 ,the regular ,woman's ,prayer ,meeting might well set apart one meeting each month where they are held weekly1 or a meeting at longer intervals when they occur less frequently2 this monthly or quarterly meeting to be devoted to prayer and conversation about the spread of the ,gospel in our own country4 ,at these meetings a collection may be taken and there may be a treasurer to receive this1 and an officer1 either secretary or president1 to preside at the meeting4 ,it is not necessary that these officers should serve no other organizations1 since the same person not infrequently acts as an officer in one or more societies and keeps the business of each by itself4 ,it seems wise1 however1 whenever a sufficient number of persons can be obtained1 to have separate officers for different organizations4 ,the end to be attained is that there be a definite1 separate time given to praying and working for the cause of the evangelization of our own country1 and a definite1 separate contribution arranged so that each woman of the church may have just the channel at hand by which to send her own offering for this cause direct to its destination4 ,and further1 may we not ask those churches that have adopted the system of weekly offerings1 known as the 8,harris plan10 to put this ,association also on their list1 to make this one of the channels of distribution through which individual members of the church show their desire and accomplish their purpose of co-operating in ,christ's work of saving men8 ,it is no longer--if it ever ought to have been--the age in which ,christian men and women should wait to be stirred1 to be urged1 even to be invited1 to give4 ,does it not become each of us to find out by calculation1 careful1 generous calculation1 how much we can afford to the specific work of spreading the ,gospel2 and then through what channels we can best effect our object8 ,and if this is done by all will there not be some who will wish to send part of their funds through this society1 whose work is1 directly1 for the women and children of our country8 ,new
