ministers1 trained in an ,american ,missionary ,association school1 in stating some incidents of his life to a friend1 said that he was led1 when about sixteen years old1 to give up gambling and licentiousness1 simply out of regard for his teacher1 fearing that she would learn of his evil ways and despise him4 ,that teacher little thought then1 and has never learned even1 of the blessed influence upon that young man1 of her pure and consecrated life1 which1 through the providence of ,god1 led to the transformation of a gambler and profligate1 into an efficient and esteemed ,christian minister1 through whom she is now preaching to hundreds and even thousands4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,superintendent1 scouring through ,georgia1 came across ,rev4 ,mr4 ,thomas1 a choice man1 who has charge of two colored ,presbyterian churches at ,union ,point and ,woodstock1 under commission of the ,northern ,general ,assembly1 and who got all his schooling--three years--at our ,lewis ,high ,school in ,macon1 ,ga4 ,so the fruit of our tree of knowledge1 is falling over into other church lots1 and we are glad of it4 ,such fruitage is a great encouragement to the teachers of our minor schools4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,bible ,example of ,reconstruction4--,it was after the return from ,babylon4 ,civil and the moral reformation went hand in hand4 ,the first ,governor1 ,zerubabel1 who was a grandson of a former king1 had the high priest1 ,joshua1 to lead in the worship1 and the prophets1 ,haggai and ,zechariah1 to preach and to teach4 ,the next ,governor1 ,ezra1 instituted for the instruction of the people an extensive system of ,bible-readings4 8,so they read in the ,book1 in the law of ,god1 distinctly and gave the sense1 and caused them to understand the reading40 ,the next ,governor1 ,nehemiah1 was a reformer4 ,he put down the practices of taking heathen wives1 of violating the ,sabbath1 and of exacting illegal interest4 ,no improvement has as yet been made upon that style of civil reconstruction4 ,religion and education1 the church and the school1 must go along with the re-ordering of the ,state4 ,so we find our work at the ,south in the line of a ,divine pattern4 ,the ,bible gives us its ideal of dealing with freedmen by taking into its sacred canon the five books of ,moses for the emancipated ,israelites1 the books of ,ezra1 ,nehemiah1 ,haggai and ,zechariah1 for the restored captives4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,zeal ,,for ,,study4 ,a good deal has been said1 from time to time1 of the abatement among the colored people of that eagerness to learn1 which marked the days immediately following their emancipation4 ,of course1 much of it is true2 many found by trial that it was not so easy or instantaneous a process to learn to read as they had supposed2 the pressure of self-support drew away the attention of others from their aspirations after an education2 unduly excited ambitions and crude hopes were seen to be unfounded1 and in the disappointment many were discouraged4 ,but all of it is not true4 ,there are many instances yet of the early eagerness to learn among the young1 and even among the old2 we give an instance from a teacher's letter3 8,one woman1 #ci years old1 lives in the country1 and walks six miles to school1 and six miles again after school to her home4 ,her seat has been vacant only on one or two of the rainiest days since the school opened1 ,september #ast4 ,at home1 she has all her household affairs to look after1 and finds time to study at night even then2 and if1 on account of helping her husband to pick cotton in the fall1 she would go late to bed without #8knowing her lesson1' it #8worried' her so1 she said1 that she #8could not get a wink of sleep1'and her husband would waken to find her up and studying4 ,she is gaining slowly in rudimentary knowledge1 and is very much pleased1 or1 as she would say1 #8proud' of her success4 ,several such ones1 eager to learn1 ,i have under my care1 and though they can learn but slowly1 it is really better than that they should never know anything1 though ,i think we would count it hardly worth while to take such pains so late in life2 yet1 better to get upon the first round of the ladder than not to rise at all40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,tropical ,,africa4 ,the ,three ,lake ,missions4 ,among the great movements of this stirring age1 none are1 perhaps1 more far-reaching than those for the exploration and evangelization of ,tropical ,africa4 ,the splendid achievements of ,livingstone and ,stanley crown and complete the efforts of their heroic predecessors4 ,africa's three great central lakes and her two great rivers--the mysteries of the ages--are now explored and mapped4 ,the missionary efforts that have followed these discoveries reveal an enthusiasm1 and a consecration of talent and life1 worthy of the vast field thus opened4 ,in the promptness of the response1 the money and the lives devoted and the number of missions founded or projected1 the last five years give a history that probably has no parallel in the records of ,christian missions4 ,the story of these adventures in discovery and evangelization has the fascination of romance1 and is pathetic in the piety and the sufferings of both travellers and missionaries4 ,we select as illustrations the three ,lake ,missions of ,tropical ,africa4 #a4 ,the ,victoria ,nyanza ,mission4 ,on the northern shores of this greatest of ,africa's central lakes is the dominion of ,king ,mtesa--a name now familiar to the civilized world4 ,he rules over two millions of people1 has a navy of #cjj war canoes and an army of #aej1jjj warriors4 ,in #ahge1 ,stanley reached his capital4 ,the welcome was cordial1 and for two months the traveller taught the ,king the principles of ,christianity with such happy results that the ,bible was studied1 and in obedience to its teachings1 an enemy and rebel1 conquered in battle and doomed to death in accordance with ,african morals and invariable practice1 was spared6 ,stanley appreciated the true value of the ,king's 8conversion10 and saw the need of having his own incipient teaching followed up by steady missionary labors4 ,his appeal for such labors was written in ,africa and appeared in a ,london paper ,nov4 #ae1 #ahge4 ,the prompt response should be noticed4 ,three days after it appeared1 came an anonymous offer of #be1jjj for the founding of the mission1 and soon another equal sum was proffered4 ,the venerable and efficient ,church ,missionary ,society undertook the work4 ,the consecrated money was soon followed by the consecrated men4 ,in #ahgf1 the company of missionaries landed at ,zanzibar1 and travelling the #hjj miles of jungle in six months1 and marking their first disaster in the death of one of their party1 reached ,mtesa's capital4 ,they were welcomed with enthusiasm1 and when the name of ,jesus was uttered1 a salute was fired4 ,the work was begun immediately1 but soon the second great disaster came--two of the company1 ,lieutenant ,smith and ,mr4 ,o',neill1 were murdered at no great distance from the capital4 ,but instead of discouragement1 these disasters called forth new enthusiasm4 ,three young men were promptly sent out by the ,church ,missionary ,society4 ,they took the ,nile route1 but a journey that should have taken three or four months was protracted to nine by the floating islands in the ,upper ,nile and the ignorance of the ,arab captain4 ,one of the missionaries received a sunstroke and was obliged to return4 ,at length they reached ,uganda and were joyfully received1 but soon came the greatest calamity--a week after their arrival two ,french ,jesuit priests came also1 and succeeded in so disaffecting the mind of the ,king as to arrest the work1 and lead to the withdrawment of most of the missionaries4 ,the summary at the latest dates is3 ,sixteen missionaries in all have been sent1 of whom six have died and three have returned sick4 ,of the seven still in ,africa1 four have been permitted to go on various duties and three remain at ,uganda without the facilities either to carry on their work or to withdraw4 #b4 ,tanganika ,mission4 ,ujiji1 the location of the ,tanganika ,mission is endeared to the friends of ,livingstone4 ,here he made his temporary home1 and here1 almost ready to die1 he was discovered by ,stanley1 to be restored to vigor and to toil still longer for ,africa1 till at last he was found dead upon his knees4 ,the plan for a mission here was formed by the ,london ,missionary ,society1 scarcely less venerable than the ,church ,missionary ,society4 ,mr4 ,arthington of ,leeds1 ,eng41 one of the generous and prompt donors of #be1jjj for the ,nyassa ,mission1 gave a like sum for this4 ,four ordained missionaries1 one scientific man and one builder1 left ,london in ,march1 #ahgg4 ,their journey from the coast of ,africa was protracted over thirteen months in consequence of the many obstacles and vexatious delays4 ,added to these trials1 death did its fearful work4 ,under these discouraging circumstances1 ,dr4 ,mullen1 the intrepid and beloved ,secretary of the ,society1 obtained the reluctant consent of the ,directors to lead in person an additional force1 and to hasten the progress of the supplies4 ,but he had gone only #bjj miles from the coast when death closed his useful career4 ,no event in the last five years has cast such a gloom over mission circles in ,great ,britain as the sad fate of this noble man4 #c4 ,nyassa ,mission4 ,again is the stimulus of ,livingstone's labors seen1 and his name and memory honored in the founding of another mission3 the ,livingstonia on ,lake ,nyassa4 ,it was a labor of love for the ,free ,church of ,scotland1 aided by sister communions to undertake this mission4 ,in the ,spring of #ahge1 the expedition started1 having been furnished with all needed supplies1 including a beautiful steel steamer and two boats for the use of the mission on the ,lake4 ,after a tedious journey up the ,zambesi and ,shir and a toilsome land journey of #fj miles1 around the ,murchison ,falls1 the ,lake was at length reached4 ,after a brief search1 a site was selected that held out unusual hopes of coveted advantages--there were no mosquitos and a favoring lake breeze gave promise of health4 ,but alas for the unforeseen and insignificant difficulties that sometimes defeat the greatest undertakings--the fatal tsetse fly compelled the choice of a new location4 ,but we cannot give space for the subsequent details4 ,the disasters and deaths in these missions have had a depressing effect upon the hearts of ,christians in ,great ,britain1 and we fear that the discouragements will to some extent be felt in this country4 ,but we must guard ourselves against hasty inferences and unwarranted fears4 ,we should remember3-- #a4 ,that trials at the outset are often ,god's means of arousing a deeper faith4 ,the history of missions1 modern and ,apostolic1 is full of examples4 ,the ,teloogoo ,mission where such an unusual work of ,divine grace has recently been experienced and the converts have been numbered by thousands1 was for a long time the scene of unfruitful labors4 ,bishop ,crowther's ,mission in ,west ,africa1 now so strong and growing1 had an early experience of toils and persecutions4 ,the ,apostles themselves encountered imprisonments and death not only1 but their labors were sometimes followed by defections1 perversions of doctrine and scandals in life4 #b4 ,we should take courage from the fact that the slave-trade1 the worst foe to missionary labors in ,africa1 is feeling the effects of the earnest efforts of ,great ,britain for its overthrow4 ,sir ,samuel ,baker1 and after him ,col4 ,gordon1 the stout old ,covenanter--the ,havelock of ,africa--have crippled its power on the ,upper ,nile1 while the labors of ,sir ,bartle ,frere1 and subsequently of ,dr4 ,kirk at ,zanzibar1 have been equally effective along the coast1 so that the ,church ,missionary ,intelligencer feels authorized to say that 8the slave-trade if not killed1 is scotched40 ,the missions themselves1 though hindered in many respects1 have had a salutary influence in shaming and arresting this fiendish traffic4 #c4 ,finally1 the church of ,god must bear in mind that the ,saviour's last and great command1 8,go ye into all the world and preach the ,gospel10 is accompanied by that all-comprehensive and all-sufficient promise1 8,lo1 ,i am with you always1 even unto the end of the world40 ,god will redeem the whole world1 and in the ,saviour's heart and plan1 ,quarterly ,review for ,january1 #ahhj1 from which we gratefully reprint elsewhere his tribute to our work4 ,anything which comes from the pen of this distinguished gentleman--one of the most cultured men of the race whose cause he pleads--is well worth reading and consideration4 ,with much that the ,doctor says1 we are in full and hearty agreement1 but beg leave to make one or two suggestions1 growing out of what seem to be at least not unwarranted deductions from his positions4 ,no one can regret more than we do the prejudice which exists1 in this country especially1 against the colored man4 ,and there is no doubt that1 as ,dr4 ,blyden observes1 even among those who are not unmoved by the story of his wrongs1 and who are earnestly engaged in philanthropic efforts for his uplifting1 this personal prejudice and sense of superiority does exist4 ,that it is not so to anything like the same degree in ,england and on the ,continent1 is suggestive in the light it casts upon the fact among us4 ,on what is the difference of feeling founded8 ,certainly not altogether in the natural race-prejudice4 ,that is a fact not to be denied4 ,there is a prejudice which is universal between all people of distinct races of men4 ,it is felt by the original inhabitants of ,africa against the ,caucasian1 as ,dr4 ,b4 shows1 as well as by the white man in his own home against the black4 ,but in this land1 the prejudice is intensified by the position and the character of those who have made up the negro population4 ,dr4 ,blyden objects to our calling the ,negro1 ,indian and ,chinaman 8the despised races40 ,he even dislikes to have ,africa called 8the ,dark ,continent40 ,of course1 our brother knows that the sympathies of this ,association are1 as they have always been1 with these people of his land1 and that our toils and labors have not been limited1 nor of brief continuance1 in their behalf4 ,all this he most fully and kindly acknowledges in his article4 ,it is hardly necessary for us to say1 then1 that we have used the term as describing what is1 and as contrasted with what ought to be4 ,it is true1 rightly or wrongly1 that they have been looked down upon and are church that does neither us nor anybody else any good4 ,if we should undertake to root it out1 ,i do not know how much wheat might come up with it1 nor how much wheat we would trample down in getting to it4 ,oh1 how wise we need to be in dealing with these people2 what a broad mantle of charity we have to throw over them4 ,those of us who glean after the reapers in this field1 where the 8patriarchal institution0 once flourished1 find that either the type of piety that prevailed in the 8,abrahamic household0 was very defective1 or the 8,abrahamic duty0 was woefully neglected4 ,certainly1 the idea of religion that prevails among the former dependents of these modern patriarchs1 is not that of either the ,old or ,new ,testament4 ,but why throw stones at the old defunct institution8 ,what did ,i say8 ,defunct8 ,i wish to ,god it was defunct1 and that these freemen had a fair chance and a free fight for their rights and liberties4 ,but that day is a long way off2 and ,i fear the shimmer of the morn is not yet seen4 ,i want to be just as hopeful as possible4 ,i never was a croaker4 ,i generally see the bright side of a thing4 ,but sometimes1 when ,i come in from some tale of oppression and misery1 the clouds just shut right down--it is midnight4 ,when ,i am made to know that there are #bj1jjj poor wretches here in this city that are the carcass on which rich the following report upon the final examinations of the ,atlanta ,university1 for the school year just closed4 ,the ,board attended these examinations in an almost entire body4 ,they were promptly and courteously met by ,president ,ware and his associates1 and the examinations proceeded with systematic regularity4 ,the exercises were designated by neatly printed programmes1 with the time and place of recitation distinctly set forth4 ,the examinations were fairly conducted and disclosed the fact that the most advanced methods of teaching were employed4 ,these methods were mainly topical1 supplemented by appropriate questions1 which evinced that the students had an intelligent comprehension of the subjects under consideration4 ,we were especially impressed by the evidences of patient1 ,the examinations were entirely oral and the decorum and order maintained were of a high character4 ,the cleanliness of the recitation rooms1 the preservation of school property and the gradual improvement of the grounds were marked4 ,the final exercises at ,friendship ,church were very creditable to the institution4 ,the subjects of the speeches and essays were appropriate1 without political bearing1 and they were delivered and read in a becoming manner4 ,comparing the examinations with preceding ones1 we are satisfied that the ,university is steadily on the up-grade1 and that it is becoming a centre of great interest among the colored people4 ,the religious training of the pupils appeared to be excellent4 ,the ,normal feature of the institution we regard with especial interest4 ,in no way can education be so rapidly extended1 or its improved methods so effectually multiplied1 as by the special training of teachers4 ,this we believe to be the great educational want are probably not a great many thinking that1 if ,i should die or leave1 there would be a vacancy1 and if there should be a vacancy they would like to fill it4 ,not many are interested in my will2 few ,neither is there any prejudice against me as a ,foreigner because of my brogue1 or my dress or my habits4 ,without the honors of a ,foreign ,missionary1 ,i am also without many of his disadvantages1 and my national and ,yankee peculiarities1 which might hinder across the sea1 help on this side of the ,atlantic4 ,this is indeed a missionary field1 but operated with special facilities4 ,it is a double missionary field4 ,for1 #c;d4 ,the most pressing work in our own country is here4 ,as surely as in #ahfa our national peril is largely in the ,south4 ,ignorance is dense2 immorality is rampant3 must save the ,southerners1 and there are no ,southerners more hopeful and more deserving than the late slaves4 ,they are down but their faces are upward4 ,give them a hand and they will take it1 especially if it be a 8,yankee hand10 and a little lifting develops a good deal of spring in themselves4 ,thus it is that ,patriotism as well as ,humanity and ,christianity keep me here1 and no campaigning in our recent war seemed more a duty of loyalty than that in which ,i am now engaged4 ,i am glad to be in the ranks and to still wear the blue4 ,but1 #dth4 ,looking beyond our broad land1 ,sometimes one is tempted to say that the work here is in vain4 ,we know1 for instance1 that a great deal has been done during the last fifteen years by the ,principal of ,trinity ,school1 and yet one can see that the work is by no means finished4 ,have not some people at the ,north been thinking that1 after fifteen years of good work among the colored people of the ,south1 the ,a4,m4,a4 ought to be about leaving the field here for some other8 ,some here say to me1 it will be a work of centuries to bring up this people2 others1 that the colored race never will be fit for anything but farm laborers2 they must be hewers of wood and drawers of water4 ,some people in ,ohio think the religion of the colored man in the ,south is a 8pure and undefiled0 religion4 ,some people here think there is no use in trying to give the colored man a pure system of religion4 8,they get together and shout and carry on1 and that is all they are fitted for40 8,their religion is impure and defiled1 and they cannot appreciate a pure religion40 ,so say the enemies of the colored race4 ,well1 this is partly true2 too true4 ,the colored man has emotion1 and his late masters were too often content with that 8religion0 in the slave4 ,as slaves they were allowed to preach and steal and commit adultery1 and all together1 too4 ,when we think of the pit from which they have been lifted1 and of their ancestry--only a few generations ago heathen all of them1 cannibals some of them--can we think that the results are less than we might expect8 ,a great deal has been done here1 and there is a great deal to show for it4 ,some might think there was not much to be seen of good results4 ,a church of forty-four members--three less than two years ago1 five less than one year ago--some weak ones1 the church as well as the school still pecuniarily dependent on the ,a4,m4,a41 they will not be ready to cut loose from the fostering care of the ,association for some years yet4 ,christ said that the kingdom of heaven was like a grain of mustard seed1 or like a little leaven4 ,these churches and schools act like leaven in a mass of ignorance4 ,and this leaven works4 ,and it is because of this leavening power of the ,gospel that we are encouraged4 ,the whole will be leavened in time4 ,but time is necessary4 ,the ,congregational churches have undertaken a mighty work1 and they must patiently stick to it for years yet4 ,much as can be seen of the results of the work here1 more than half of it cannot be easily seen4 ,other churches have been enlightened and helped4 ,even those who try to keep out the light can't prevent some of it getting through the chinks4 ,you will want to know about the work for the new school building4 ,if we had had the least idea that we must work five months with less than one hundred dollars in money1 we never would have undertaken the job4 ,we hoped a fair share of the subscriptions would be paid in cash4 ,one or two had themselves to buy the moulds for making the bricks1 and the shovels to dig with1 and the cord to line the ground with4 ,we had no boards to cover the bricks1 so1 instead of kilning the bricks as they were made1 they were piled in an old log house4 ,many were broken in this way4 ,then they were moved when we had boards to cover the kiln2 and many more were broken4 ,and from the #ast of ,august--we didn't begin to prepare the ground till ,july #agth--till ,november we had heavy and frequent rains4 ,the papers said such a season had not been known for many years4 ,we were hindered in our work1 and lost bricks from the rains4 ,but we have over a hundred thousand bricks1 and a total expense of one hundred and fifty dollars4 ,if the workers next summer can have the money1 as we hope1 they will not work to such over thirteen hundred signers to the temperance pledge4 ,some conversions in their ,sunday-schools were also reported2 and quite often now some one speaks in our prayer-meeting of receiving a letter from a pupil asking for prayers that he may become a ,christian4 ,just at the close of the fall term we were visited with a remarkable outpouring of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,our good ,dr4 ,roy had been here1 and a sermon which he preached left impressions which brought some to decide for ,christ4 ,and then the ,sunday-school lessons4 ,i remember watching the young people during the closing exercises of ,sunday-school the ,sabbath before ,christmas1 and ,i saw that there was deep feeling1 and felt sure that there were some who would not long resist the ,spirit1 and during the next three days there were nineteen conversions4 ,three or four others have since then found ,christ4 ,there is also a marked ,christian growth and a growing interest in the study of the ,bible4 ,our hearts are greatly encouraged1 and we go forward rejoicing that we are permitted to work for ,christ4 ,truly 8,the ,lord hath done great things for us whereof we are glad40 ,at present we have one hundred and four boarders1 with the prospect of more soon4 ,every room is occupied1 and we are crowded to what seems the utmost limit of our accommodations4 ,what we shall do with those yet to come1 is a problem which attendance was good1 and the exercises thrilling with ,christian interest to one who can see in such facts the beginning of a great tidal wave of grace that is yet to flow over the ,chinese empire2 and1 what is more1 a good collection was taken1 showing the interest to be genuine4 ,the exercises consisted of recitations of classified ,scripture1 an original address1 an original dialogue1 and singing--all by the ,chinese--and brief introductory and closing exercises by others4 ,the mission is in a very prosperous condition1 and shows the fruits of the earnest1 faithful teaching of those who have had charge of the school1 and especially of the present principal1 ,mrs4 ,carrington40 ,after several of the exercises a muffled applause was audible1 such as on any other day and in any used to carry a basket with some sacrifice in it1 follow after my father from place to place where the different gods were for worshiping4 ,i believe on them very much4 ,i thought the idols can help us a great deal4 ,so when ,i was at school one day1 ,i wrote a piece of paper1 it represent a sage1 and ,i put it inside of my desk4 ,i then bought some nuts and wine and offered to him1 and bowed my head to him1 and ask him to help me about my lessons1 that ,i might recite them well1 and ,i said1 #8,if you do not help me to recite my lessons well1 when ,i return ,i tear you off and burn you up4' ,when the time come ,i could not recite very well1 so then ,i burn it4 ,i had been at school about three years4 ,my father sent me to the high school professor4 ,explaining the book of ,confucius at that time1 ,i often go with the priest to help them play the music for worshiping the evil spirits4 ,after little while the priest came to my father1 see if he can let me go learn to be a priest4 ,my father was willing to let me go1 but when my mother knew it she said1 #8,i cannot spare my son to be a priest1 worshiping too much for the evil spirit1 but ,i rather to send him to ,california1 getting his living4' 8,nearly five years have passed since ,i leaved my native land and came to this country1 where ,i found all the things strange and different from what ,i had ever seen before4 ,i found there was much for me to learn4 ,a friend of mine invited me to ,sunday-school1 and ,i went with him4 ,when ,i returned to the ,chinatown ,i ask some person what kind of people are they who teach us there8 ,they said1 ,american people2 but ,i could not know how it was that they should be willing to come and teach us without pay4 ,they told me that they were very good people who come to teach you1 and talk about ,jesus ,christ1 and show us the right way4 ,i kept on going till ,i can read the ,bible4 ,great many things very different from other books4 ,my heart was touch of ,christ4 ,i could not understand all2 but not many days after the same friend invited me to go with him to the evening mission school4 ,so ,i went with him to the school4 ,after the lessons were over1 the ,chinese helper explained the ,bible and talk to us1 telling us it was useless to serve idols2 they cannot help us2 they cannot take care of themselves4 ,but we must come to ,god of heaven1 who made all things1 heaven and earth4 ,we must ask ,him to help us1 and pray to ,him to give us all things what we need4 ,we ought to praise ,him4 ,so when ,i heard him say this ,i saw and felt all ,i had done before was of no use1 and was very wicked4 ,then ,i make up my mind to leave off worshiping idols1 and begin to worship the true and living ,god4 ,so ,i went back where ,i was employed4 ,when ,i kneeled down to pray ,i opened my window1 because ,i thought ,god cannot hear me if ,i leave it closed4 ,after a few days the ,chinese helper request me to join the ,association of ,christian darkness and follow the light1 and try to lead others of my countrymen to learn of ,jesus1 and know ,him who died for us and save us from sin4 8,when my father heard ,i follow ,christ he sent me a
